A far-reaching and relatively heavily promoted event designed to marshal support against the Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline and expansion of a Kinder Morgan pipeline in Southern B.C. went off Sunday afternoon at the Brilliant Cultural Centre.

A look at the packed parking lot gave a strong hint as per the crowd inside, estimated at 250 - 300 people.

There was a strong influence of Doukhobor and Aboriginal folks at the centre and several of the speakers were reached for comment during a recess in the proceedings.

Representing a sector of society with an acute interest in the issue of trans-provincial oil pipelines was Stewart Phillip, President of the Union of BC Indian Chiefs, who was also pleased by what he felt was a strong turnout for the June 2 event. He sees the Brilliant event as the sign of a broader, and growing movement to oppose proposals such as the Northern Gateway and Kinder Morgan shemes.

“I think as we move to the summer, and groups become more connected,” Phillip summarized. “I think we’re going to see a resurgence of the grassroots movement that we saw over the winter. These issues are not going away.”

New policy on mobile vendors yet to be adopted by council karen haviland Castlegar News Contributor

The fate of mobile food vendors in the city of Castlegar is still up in the air.

At the city’s council meeting Monday, Phil Markin, director of development for the City of Castlegar, told council that his research on mobile vendor criteria in neighbouring cities varies.

“I sent out emails to communities within the area and asked them how much they charge for a license and asked them what their policy was concerning food trucks,” said Markin.

According to Markin, licensing fees varied from city to city with some communities, such as Cranbrook charging $75 per year, to Salmo, which charges $150 per year.

but more about finding fair resolution for all those involved.

“The meeting was very insightful,” she

explained. “The business community is not anti-vendor, they are pro-fair. They want it to be fair.”

“They are passionate, vocal, and love Castlegar. We need to work with them; they are paying taxes, etc.,” McIntosh added.

Those four restaurant’s included McDonalds, the Element, Boston Pizza and Tim Hortons, although other restaurant owners were invited to the meeting.

“They all were invited, but only four came.”

Councilor Dan Rye waded into the discussion saying the food vendors do have a place in Castlegar.

“Vendors have been doing business in Castlegar for years.

This is not new. They are huge supporters of communities and create employment.

The question is, do we want to put limits on them,” said Rye. McIntosh, on the other hand, point-

ed out that restaurant owners also add much to the community by way of revenue and job creation and recommended that Planning and Development develop a fair policy for 2014.

Council was divided on how to deal with the issue of food vendors.

Half wanted a working committee to work on policy, while the other half entertained the notion of having the Chamber of Commerce help with facilitating a policy.

McIntosh said the recommendation that the Chamber become advocates for the business owners was a “cop out.”

“We absolutely passed the buck instead of tackling it ourselves with a working committee,” concluded McIntosh, who by the way, was against the notion of burdening the Chamber with the task.

Civic grant money turns up scarce Castlegar News Contributor

Christmas won’t be coming this week for the Castlegar Hospice Society.

“It can’t be Christmas every week,” said city councilor Deb McIntosh, who is also chair of finance and corporate services.

McIntosh’s comment was in response to councilor Sue Heaton-Sherstobitoff ’s concern after it was revealed on Monday night that the city’s grants budget line was depleted. While the city did authorize a $1,500 grant to Castlegar SHSS Rotary Interact Club to help with its good will trip to South America this August, and $250 to SHSS dry grad, it left Castlegar Hospice Society out in the cold at its request to sponsor a $350 hole at its fifth annual fundraising golf tournament.

“The budget is depleted and it is early into the year. Sometimes it goes fast, and sometimes it goes slow,” explained McIntosh.

That early depletion was due, in part, to a recent $4,000 grant to Pass Creek Fall Fair Society.

“This is not something that is done every year. They were facing challenges and they have over the years really walked the walk,” explained McIntosh.

“We have to pick and choose.”

Councilor Gordon Turner also voiced concern regarding the early exhaustion of grant funds, and wondered about those groups which normally apply for grants later in the year.

“A lot of groups apply for grants in the fall and we have to figure out some way to get more money in the pot,” said Turner.

McIntosh acknowledged the councilors’ concerns but stood behind the committee’s decision.

“I know we’re going to hear a lot of flak,” she said.

At one point during the discussion, Heaton-Sherstobitoff asked whether it would be feasible to

find funds elsewhere in the city’s budget to accommodate future funding requests.

“If we move money over [from other city budgets] what happens when that money runs out?” asked McIntosh.

“Robbing Peter to pay Paul is never a good idea,” she said.

Mayor Lawrence Chernoff sided with McIntosh adding, “That’s a kind of dangerous game to start playing.”

Heaton-Sherstobitoff then commented that she would hate to tell any groups that there was no money in the budget for their grant requests.

“You won’t have to tell them. It will be me,” retorted McIntosh who added that the $15,000 grants budget was slashed from a previous budget of $30,000.

Despite that previous $30,000 budget, it seems that wasn’t enough either, said McIntosh.

“We also ran out of the $30,000. We just have to be realistic,” she concluded.

Seniors’ power coming

We found out a couple of years ago what kind of positive impact a massive influx of silver manes can have on a community.

With our municipal cousins to the south and northeast we in the West Kootenays staged a thorgoughly successful BC Seniors’ Games.

The economic fallout was a tonic for our region and so were the many great personal connections made with visitors from the length and breadth of our huge province.

It’s not known, here at least, how these things are figured out, but we likely got a good reference from the games because another provincial seniors event is about to be held here in Castlegar.

This is the B.C. Seniors Citizens Association provincial conference (see story on next page) and again there will be representatives from all across the province spending some time and seeing some sights.

Here’s another chance to hone our hosting skills, making sure we do our part in making Castlegar as appealing as it can be.

Here’s where we can again take our cue from outfits like our service clubs, Communities in Bloom, Sculpturewalk, etc.

What better time of year? What better geographical location... who better than us to help make these great people feel welcome?

A world of friendships Most of us have a few good friends, usually in our own communities or not too far away. Generally, we’re quite comfortable with that limited mix.

Certain organizations such as Rotary, however, have set up ways to expand friendships around the world.

Rotary International actually encourages Rotarians and others to make friends far and wide in our global village. It has two programs in place to expand its friendship base—Group Study Exchange and Group Friendship Exchange.

Here in Castlegar, both Rotary clubs have outstanding records in regard to participating in these two programs.

Exchanges in the past few years have been from places such as Australia, New Zealand, England, Brazil, South Africa, Taiwan, Spain, Iowa, and Wisconsin/Minnesota.

My wife and I have been involved in both programs through one or the other of Castlegar’s two Rotary clubs.

We like opening our home up to visitors from other places in the world. In turn, when we travel, we get welcomed into homes in the far reaches of the globe.

ment with the country or area they come from. Sometimes, of course, a Rotarian may set up a specific travel itinerary with one of these visitors, but generally this does not happen.

Rotary study exchange groups are made up of one senior Rotarian leader and four or five young professionals who are selected to travel to a far-off country and Rotary District. These Rotarians arrive in the new country and district with a purpose—to learn as much as possible about their professions in the host country.

For example, on the most recent Group Study Exchange in Castlegar, the Brazilian professionals were made up of a computer instructor, a meteorologist, a teacher, a journalist, and a dentist. Along with being shown the local sights and staying in local homes, they visited with their professional peers on at least one day during their stay. For example, a visiting dentist observed a local dentist at work, and a computer instructor spent time at Selkirk College. Friendships, however, rarely extend beyond the visit.

Group Friendship Exchange, on the other hand, seems to be a better program for participants to come away with lasting friendships. This is partly due to the age range being more compatible and the reciprocal visChris Hopkyns Publisher

iting. If your Rotary club or district hosts a group from another corner of the world, the club or district will get to send members to that area of the world. Sometimes a few of the same people are involved at both ends.

For example, after we hosted Brazilians from Sao Paolo state here in Castlegar five years ago, we were invited to tour that same state a few months later. We re-united with some of the same people we hosted.

Just last week, we had Rotarians from Wisconsin/Minnesota visiting in Castlegar on a friendship exchange.

They were being hosted in Grand Forks, Castlegar, Cranbrook, and Sandpoint, Idaho and were spending three days in each place.

We had agreed to host a couple named Don and Carol Drost from Cameron, Wisconsin, and in three days, we hit it off so well that we hated to let them go. Don’s sense of humour—often understatements or wry comments on life—kept us laughing for the duration.

We hadn’t signed up for the return trip to Wisconsin because we had a trip to China already planned for that time period, but we told them we would show up on their doorstep in the future. And we will!

Art theft to report My name is Shirley Torbic. I am a senior and I have enjoyed painting for many years. I’ve had the pleasure of having my paintings displayed at Castle Cuts (1106 3rd St.) here in Castlegar.

Cuts and my painting had to be moved, it was covered and placed out of harm’s

way. This was one of my favourite and best paintings, it has now disappeared.

I would like to ask if your paper could place a plea for my painting to be returned to Castle Cuts with no questions asked. This painting means a lot to me and I would really like to have it returned.

The local Senior Citizens Association of B.C. Branch #46, is the host city for this annual conference, June 13-15, 2013.

There are two full days planned for the many senior guests coming from all over the province. Next week’s conference, which will be the second one in ten years for Castlegar, is a favourite destination for fabulous scenery, agreeable climate, unlimited activities indoors and out and the friendly local reception.

The two-day agenda includes a great group of speakers including: Valay Rajgor, Pharmacist from Shoppers Simply Pharmacy, speaking on the wise use of prescription drugs; Katrina Conroy, local MLA, on issues specific to seniors in this day and age; Julie Leffelaar, Social Worker and local Alzheimer

Assn. of B.C. rep, on brain health; Jenny Wallace, Community Coordinator will be speaking on Castlegar Bear Aware (undergoing new title and website); and Susan Carpenter will round out the conference topics expounding on exercise and fitness for your senior years.

At the City of Castlegar’s council meeting last Monday, Castlegar New Vision Housing Society (CNVHS) told council about a bold plan to purchase the Eremenko and Fields buildings at the corner of Columbia Ave. and 3rd St. and turn them into apartments and retail space.

“It’s a great project, an eligible project and we’re optimistic. But it’s not in the bag,” said Dan Sahlstrom, spokesperson for CNVHS. But there is a hitch.

Columbia Basin Trust, together with BC Housing will help fund the project if it’s deemed the project is viable and only if the City of Castlegar stands behind, in principle, the project.

“This application [for the funding] will go nowhere without community backing and real support from city hall,” explained Sahlstrom.

“We were told very directly that it won’t happen unless

It has been 25 years since a new antidepressant, Prozac (fluoxetine), came on the market.

It heralded a new class of antidepressant drugs, the serotonin re-uptake inhibitors. Since this discovery, there have been many other drugs that have been developed to help improve the lives of people living with depression.

When journalists show a picture of a doctor, there is usually a stethoscope hanging around the doctor's neck. In the not too distant future, this doctor symbol may be history. It's on the market now but is quite expensive.

Blood pressure varies throughout the day. It usually peaks by mid-afternoon then slowly drops to its lowest while we sleep. Coffee, smoking, exercise and stress can increase it while calming activities like medication and yoga can lower it.

Having an overactive bladder and not be near a bathroom can be very disconcerting. About 20% of Canadians have this urgency to urinate. There are oral prescription medications to help this problem but may have some side effects. There is a gel available that comes in pre-measured 1 gram doses to be applied once daily to the abdomen to help control urinary urgency. See your doctor.

In Craft Beer Revolution, Wiebe documents the fascinating craft beer movement in B.C., profiling its history, the breweries themselves, the people behind the kegs and casks, and the colourful stories.

The book is filled to the brim with recommendations for beer tasting tours around the province, lists of the best brews B.C. has to offer and entertaining trivia that will make beer geeks salivate.

Zuckerberg Island (on the Columbia River near 7th Avenue and 13th Street) is an appealing asset for residents and visitors alike, and many have lamented its closure due to damage inflicted by extremely high water levels last year.

Degradation and erosion from raging waters put the Island out of bounds for the best part of a year but that has changed for the better.

An official re-opening of the park and suspension bridge leading to it has taken place on May 30, and it’s a pretty popular move. Visitors are not the only ones who will be happy.

“I know we’ve had a lot of locals chomping at the bit to get back over there,” said City of Castlegar Engineering Technologist Lee Lafayette.

“After the flooding last year we had an engineering firm do an assessment on the bridge,” Lafayette explained. “We found that the approach to the bridge on the island side was unsafe.

Pondering he not-so-great Grape Debate submitted

I paid little—no, make that no—attention to a February event in Vancouver billed as The Grape Debate. Put on by UBC Alumni Affairs, Wines of BC and the UBC Research Centre, the event put a question to a half dozen B.C. wine experts: should B.C. focus on developing a signature varietal?

There is only one real reason why proponents of the idea would have owners tear out many of the large variety of vines now grown in the province’s scant 4,000 hectares of vineyards.

It would force growers to focus on the development of an export industry and make it easier to develop a name for BC wines in other countries.

The wine snobs, aka the pro side, didn’t win over the audience. But they did plant the seed, if not the vine, that B.C. wineries are getting it all wrong in continuing to explore just how this province’s countless microclimates and terroirs

can be exploited. Focus on Syrah in the hot areas, Pinot Noir in cooler climes and whites like Chenin Blanc and Rielsing around Kelowna and northward, the signature varietalists say.

There are flaws in that argument though. First, why limit choices for your local market when BC consumers buy and drink nearly all of the production in the province, and lots of imports, too? After all, there is a business adage that says that 80 per cent of your sales are made to 20 per cent of your customers, and it is cheaper and easier to increase sales to existing customers.

After all, they have already said they like your product, casting votes with their wallets.

Perhaps more importantly, sales directly from the winery provide the biggest profit margin.

McKay comes out on top in Bucyk submitted

Seventeen year old, Tyler McKay of Rossland won the Johnny Bucyk championship this past weekend in Creston.

The players all played 36 holes on Saturday and then 18 on Sunday. Tyler opened with rounds of 75, 74 on the difficult Creston course on Saturday.

This was good enough to have a nine shot lead over his brother Braden McKay who posted 81, 77 and Jake Reeves of

He is survived by his wife Sarah Chambers of Mountain View Lodge, Nelson; his mother-in-law, Betty Polster of Duncan; his brother in law, David Polster and wife Genevieve Singleton of Duncan; sister-in-law, Celia Cheatley and husband David Cheatley of Victoria; brother in law Alan Polster and partner Lisa Larson of Revelstoke; and many nieces and nephews.

Don was a kind man and a devoted husband, son and uncle. He grew up with his brother Dennis in Castlegar and was a lifelong resident of Castlegar and surrounding area. He worked for BC Forestry at a fire tower, Cominco and BC Ferries at Thrums, Glade and Robson.

He married the love of his life, Sarah, in 1980.

During all the ups and downs of Sarah and Don’s challenges Don remained committed and concerned about Sarah to the end of his life. In midlife Don was diagnosed with bipolar disease and later blindness.

He took a great interest in country and western music, cars and current events. He had a phenomenal memory for dates and events. As a young man he enjoyed fishing, camping and hiking. His nephews and nieces gave him great joy and he took much interest in their activities.

Our deepest thanks to Rhonda Barisoff and Linda Krantz of Castlegar Mental Health for making a profound difference in Don’s life during the last few years; Linda Frew and Jane Phillips of Castle Wood Village and staff for making the last year of his life so comfortable; Dr. Merritt and staff for their many years of care of Don and Sarah; Clare Singleton of Endako for her help and long friendship with Don; Jim May and Cathy Scott-May of Bonnington for their assistance in the past year and Jean Smith for her kind visits to Don. A celebration of life will be held Tuesday, June 18, 2-4 pm, at Castle Wood Village, 525 Columbia Ave., Castlegar.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Evelyn Clare Batchelor (Forbes) on May 17, 2013

Evelyn was born July 23, 1922 in St. Walburg Sask.

In 1942 she married Richard Batchelor and in 1947 moved to Kinnaird before moving to Robson.

Evelyn enjoyed fishing, camping, sewing and knitting, especially loved family get-togethers for any and all occasions.

She was predeceased by her husband, grandson Grant, son Ted, sister Edna and brother Bill. Evelyn is survived by son Tom (Karen), daughter-in-law Linda, grandchildren Connie, Carrie, Stacie (Clay) Jason (Kayla) Anita (Fred) Wendy ( Alex), and 19 great grandchildren, and sister June.

The family would like to thank the staff of Castle Wood Village, Jubliee Manor and Talarico Place for their wonderful care.

A memorial service will be held on June 28, at the Kinnaird Park Community Church.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimers Association of B.C.

Koozma Joe Pereverzoff It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, Koozma Joe Pereverzoff. Koozma passed away on Sunday, May 26, 2013 with his family by his side, in Pass Creek, at the age of 89.

Koozma was born in Pass Creek, BC, on May 17, 1924 to parents Nick and Annie Pereverzoff. He married the love of his life Annie Sofonoff on December 23, 1950 in Champion Creek and resided in Pass Creek where they raised 4 children.

Koozma retired from the sawmill industry after 29 years of service as a sawmill labourer. He was a member of the Union of Spiritual Communities of Christ (USCC) and truly enjoyed singing and being part of the Kootenay Psalmists.

He was also an active member of the Pass Creek community choir group. Koozma enjoyed gardening, farming and spending time with his grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents Nick and Annie, brothers Nick, George, Fred, Alec and Cecil.

Left to mourn his loss is his loving wife of 62 years Annie, son Serg (Eunice), son Christopher (Celine), son Walter, son Dan (Therese) and grandchildren Julie, Jodie, Nathan, Brenden, Chadd and Chloe.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Castlegar Funeral Chapel, and a traditional Doukhobour service was held at Brilliant Cultural Centre on Thursday, May 30, 2013 followed by interment in Pass Creek Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Koozma’s memory may be made to ISKRA, 1876 Brilliant Road, Castlegar, BC V1N 4K2.

Many thanks to each and everyone who provided Koozma’s family love and support during our time of need. A special thanks to Paul and Mary Verigin for all their help and support and Leonard Voykin for officiating the service.

Michael Nazaroff Michael was born January 22, 1927 in Slocan Park, BC to Nikolas Andrew and Dora Nazaroff (Dootoff).

He was the second of six children. On June 1st, 2013, he passed away peacefully at his home in Oliver BC, surrounded by his family.

He married Pauline Strelaeff. They lived in Brilliant and then moved to Castlegar where they owned a furniture and appliance store until 1976. Michael and Pauline then purchased an orchard in Oliver and later retired there.

He is survived by his wife Pauline, sons Arnie, Dan (Joanne) and Terry (Margie) as well as seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren, brothers Peter (Pat) and Jack (Ann), brothers-in-law, sisters-inlaw and numerous nephews and nieces. Michael was predeceased by his parents, brother Nick and sisters Polly and Ann. Services will be held Friday, June 7th, 2013 at the Brilliant Cultural Centre starting at 10:00 am with interment to follow at Ootischenia Cemetery.

Sports Sunfest Jam Sunday’ skateboard jam was another positive experience for everyone who came out to the skatepark. The beginners had an opportunity to improve their stopping, turning, and safety skills with onsite skateboard coaching. The intermediate and advanced skateboarders from Salmo, Nelson, South Slocan and Castlegar had superb weather to show off their talent.
