However, the order does not raise the maximum amount of storage on the lake, nor increase the height of the weir storage structure.

It followed community consultation — including a public meeting March 9 in Lake Cowichan — between Victoria, the Cowichan Valley Regional District, and Catalyst Paper.

A father-and-son camping trip near Lake Cowichan gave two Victoria guys the tale of a lifetime when a large animal joined the fun.

Jason Creech, 18, admitted he and dad, Richard, didn’t actually see the suspected cat, but they found plenty of evidence a mountain lion — or similar big predator — visited their secluded campsite overnight Sunday, along Upper Harris Creek.

Pictures show big paw prints, plus scratches along their car, from what the pair thinks was a juvenile cougar.

“I’d heard about cougars or bears a bit further (north) but I didn’t know it would be close — or right on top of the car,” Jason said.

Their ordeal started after pitching tents along a riverbank, and starting a fire. Then the city boys heard rustling in the brush, gravel moving — and later, something pacing around their tents.

“I figured it was just my dad tending the campfire, or a squirrel,” said Jason, “nothing to worry about.”

Around 1 a.m., Jason got cold and headed to the car to sleep.

Richard, an IT professional, slept in his tent, later going to the packed car at one point to put an iron frying pan on the roof.

A cooler inside the car held sirloin beef, said Jason, reckoning that food, or the frying pan, attracted what came next.

“The beast circled the car, swiping at it many times with its paws,” Jason’s report to the Gazette says. “Distinct claw marks stripped red paint to bare metal. I thought it was a raccoon or something.”

Then Jason heard something thump onto the roof.

“That’s when I started to get worked up,” Jason said. “The part that really got me going was when I heard one, deep growling sound — I knew it wasn’t a raccoon.”

Terrified, the former personal trainer listened for a half hour in the inky darkness. Then, more

scratching. He snapped on the interior light, and blasted the car’s horn “several times, then three more, then three more.”

The car’s high beams failed to find the animal.

“I was afraid it was a bear. I didn’t want to pop my head out and have it see me.”

Good idea, Conservation officer Scott Norris explained.

“A bear would scratch at a car, but evidence would be far worse — they can bend metal backward to get at food inside.”

Jason just wanted the creature gone.

“I was just trying to get it away from our campsite.”

It worked: Richard arrived, armed with a hatchet.

The rattled pair decided to strike camp, and head home at around 3 a.m., carrying souvenirs of their trip.

“Paw-pad prints were visible on two locations on the upperside panels,” their report states.

After viewing pictures of the track, Norris is skeptical it was a cougar. He said it was more likely a wolf or a dog. He called chances “remote” that a cougar would paw at a car to reach food.

“There are lots of cougars out there, but also lots of people with dogs.”

He advised campers to never leave food in a vehicle they plan

to sleep in, suggesting using a tree to hang food 15 feet up, and well away from the campsite.

Jason’s moral of the story?

“Expect the unexpected, I guess — it was a one-ina-thousand chance of this happening.

“I would have made sure there’s no food outside the car, and I’d carry a stick with me; all I had was a folding knife.”

Announcements aside, Enbridge pipeline project is not dead yet One of Premier Christy Clark’s first tasks of the new term will be to resume trade talks with Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Several daunting tasks await.

Clark must repair relations with Alberta Premier Alison Redford after B.C.’s theatrics over oil pipelines before the election, and prepare for the results of a federal environmental review of the Enbridge Northern Gateway proposal in the fall.

Some people were surprised on Friday when the B.C. government released its final written submission to the federal environmental review panel on Northern BC

By Tom Fletcher Gateway. It was widely interpreted as B.C.’s outright rejection of the project, but it’s not as simple as that.

Clark and B.C. Environment Minister Terry Lake signalled several times before the election that they were not getting the answers they wanted from Enbridge. But they stuck to the principle that the hearings must be completed.

The NDP repeated for months that the B.C. Liberal government had forfeited its own review and handed jurisdiction over the environmental assessment to Ottawa. In fact, a pipeline that runs across two provinces is by definition a matter of federal jurisdiction. B.C. could have held its own parallel set of hearings, which was the NDP’s stated preference, but in no circumstance does the province have a veto. And both the B.C. Liberal government and Enbridge were careful to leave the door open for further talks.

A closer reading of their comments shows that the key difference at this stage is one of

timing.

“The panel must determine if it is appropriate to grant a certificate for the project as currently proposed on the basis of a promise to do more study and planning after the certificate is granted,” Lake said. “Our government does not believe that a certificate should be granted before these important questions are answered.”

According to Enbridge executive Janet Holder, those important questions can’t all be answered until the hearings are over. The company maintains that every river crossing and spill response plan can’t be Bureau done in detail during the twoyear hearings.

B.C.’s final submission runs to nearly 100 pages. It goes into detail on the inconsistencies and unanswered questions on such vital topics as whether diluted bitumen can sink in water.

In short, the province argues that it can sink if the oil is in fresh water, or if it is exposed to weathering so lighter fractions evaporate, or if it is mixed with sediments that increase its density.

These are pertinent conditions if heavy oil were to leak into a river in springtime, when water runs fast and cold and brown with sediment.

Then there are the obstacles presented by responding to a spill in remote wilderness and heavy snow.

Given both provincial and aboriginal opposition in B.C., the Enbridge pipeline is unlikely to be imposed, and last week Conservative cabinet minister James Moore clearly ruled that out. The B.C. government has consistently maintained that the current project does not meet Clark’s often-repeated five

B.C. Liberals aren’t Liberals Dear Editor Re: Liberals need to listen to some clear messages, May 22, Editorial

On May 22, there was a guest editorial in the Lake Cowichan Gazette which implied that the governing party in B.C. were the Liberals.

This is not the case as they were a right wing coalition of Socreds, Reformers and Conservatives

with the odd token Liberal.

The name of the governing party is the B.C. Liberals and it is not affiliated with the Liberal party of Canada. This seems to be a common mistake as I’ve noticed this same mistake made by writers in all major newspapers, on the radio (CBC) and even just talking with people in normal conversations.

Please use the proper term, B.C. Liberals, when writing editorials or articles in your paper.

conditions, including the vaguely defined “fair share” of revenues, and Moore said the federal government agrees with those conditions.

The B.C. government has to face some other uncomfortable realities as well. If heavy oil pipelines are such a risk, how does B.C. manage the one that has stretched across remote and populated areas for 60 years?

Does the government take a stand against new pipelines, and then watch as rail cars full of heavy oil cross those same rivers? No permit is required for that, and in fact there are more hazardous materials than oil moving by rail and road across the province today.

Our two remaining doctors will be relocating to Duncan from Lake Cowichan soon.

As sad as this news is, I think we should still celebrate and appreciate the great service these doctors have provided to the residents of our community for so many years.

The doctors will not be abandoning their patients who can still continue to receive medical services from them at their respective practices in

Duncan.

For a time, the inconvenience of having to rely on a family doctor outside of our community will be a reality, but we are confident that will change in the near future.

The Choose Cowichan Lake committee is determined in its pursuit of attracting physicians to our community. This challenge becomes easier to overcome by the positive attitude shown by the committee that prospective doctors might well recognize.

Native protocol May 18 was a memorable day for our community. Thank you to everyone who was involved with Heritage Days.

As part of the Heritage Days agenda, the Lake Cowichan First Nation and the Town of Lake Cowichan signed a protocol agreement.

Our two governing bodies have similar desires for developing strong communities and recognize the importance of working together to make the necessary improvements in that regard.

Having a good healthy relationship between all of our citizens and our neighbors is important and we are happy to collaborate with our neighbouring first nation community in strengthening that relationship.

Sports Wall Our Heritage Sports Wall Induction Ceremony was also part of the Heritage Days Celebration.

Congratulations to Richard Hajdu and Jim Peterson as they join our other inductees on the Wall.

It was an enjoyable occasion as we had the opportunity to recognize two great individuals for their accomplishments.

Grad portfolios I really enjoyed participating in the LCSS graduating students’ portfolio day. Listening to the aspirations of these students and learning of their many skills and talents gives me great confidence in these young adults who will be soon graduating from our school.

PAGES OF HISTORY When Jack and Maisie Smith came to Lake Cowichan in 1929, conditions were very primitive, especially for Maisie who had left her home in London, England just a few years earlier.

The first place they lived was a damp floathouse moored close to the shore here in town.

There is no doubt that this was a lifestyle that Maisie had never before encountered. No indoor plumbing, water was dipped out of the lake from the floathouse, a plank to the shore connected them with the outhouse. These were just a few of the inconveniences that the Smiths and many other local folks put up with.

Jack Smith came to the lake as a relief bus driver whose job it was to ferry (by boat) passengers and freight (arriving at Lake Cowichan) to the various logging camps and small settlements dotted around the lake. The grueling twice weekly boat trip required Jack to spend a night, each shift, in a company bunkhouse before returning to the Foot (Lake Cowichan) the next day.

The Smiths eventually bought a piece of property near the bridge (here in town) where they built a home and a store they called Smitty’s Place. In front of that store sat a long bench where locals — including many teens — could sit and gossip. (Coincidently, this author has just learned that the bench is the same one that has sat in her mother’s yard for decades.)

Smitty’s Place, (owned by Jack Smith) was a small store that sold pop, candy and a few other items. It was also a gathering place for townsfolk to meet. It was situated across the river from the Riverside Inn. At the time this picture was taken, the river was high enough to cause flooding in the vicinity.

(The building was torn down many years ago.) After several years, the Smiths moved into a house that sat on the spot the Royal Bank now occupies.

After a year, a new family home on (what is now called) Greendale Road was purchased. Located on a beautiful riverfront property, it had once been a caretaker’s house on the former Dunsmuir estate.

The Smith girls, Laura and Jacquie (Scholey) later recalled the town as a very close knit community, one filled with good memories, during the 1930s and 40s; Christmas concerts with every child taking part, the impressive fireworks that took place each Halloween and afternoon swims from their yard with the neighbourhood kids. Movies at the community hall (site of present day senior’s centre) were always popular with

youth and adults alike although the hard backless benches left something to be desired. Laura said that the ongoing serial features brought them back each week.

In the early 1940s Jack Smith was called upon to help layout the streets and roads of the community which was then in the process of incorporating to a village (which occurred in 1944). Smith along with Bill Grosskleg and George Forslund conducted a rough survey that set out the village boundaries.

Later, while working for Gordon’s General Store (site of the present day auto supply) — which had a contract with the logging companies — Smith and co-worker Red Rendall went out on many powder runs (as they called them), usually at night. They picked up and delivered stumping powder and blasting caps to the logging companies

(used to blast rock, hang-ups etcetera). In two separate trucks the two men would pick up the materials from James Island, near Victoria, and then deliver them to the powder houses in the woods around Lake Cowichan.

In 1948 daughter Laura Smith graduated from Lake Cowichan High School and started work at the local Toronto Dominion (TD) bank (situated in the site of today’s Home Hardware.) After marriage, Laura and her husband Gordon Delill, built a house near the Smith family home on Greendale. They had three children and later moved away.

Laura now resides in Duncan.

Daughter Jacquie Scholey, who also attended local schools, is now retired and lives in town as does two of her three sons. Their brother David moved away many years ago and currently lives in the Caribou.

Are you tired of driving by the old, rundown, dilapidated buildings scattered around Lake Cowichan?

Are you tired of wondering if your teenager will be the victim of a collapsed roof when using these buildings as a hang-out refuge on weekends?

Many were during a contentious public meeting held in early 2012.

Well, Mayor Ross Forrest and town council were pleased to announce something is being done.

Joseph Fernandez, the town’s Chief Administrative Officer, presented mayor and council with a report May 28: • Four properties have been inspected • Owners were served notice their buildings are in hazardous condition, they are a nuisance (derelict in appearance), and that action must be taken to rectify identified problems.

• The property owners, whose properties are located on Cowichan Ave, South Shore Road, and Darnell Road, have 14 days to appeal the findings and 30 days to take action • If nothing happens, the town will demolish the buildings at the owner’s expense.

“Hopefully this will trigger some of the other ones to climb on board and mitigate some of their problems as well.”

Council acknowledged there are many other buildings within the town’s limits — both commercial and residential — that are unsafe or unsightly.

“I think this shows that this is just the start of the process,” said McGonigle.

“There have been a number of other properties identified which will either come as reports later or perhaps they will take the time to mitigate some of the (concerns).”

The Cowichan Lake Chamber of Com-

merce, along with many local business owners, had demanded that the town take action.

“It’s nice to see something happening,” Cowichan Lake District Chamber of Commerce president Rita Dustow told the Gazette. “It’s all about pride of ownership.

We need to find a way to encourage people to have pride of ownership, because that’s what it’s all about at the end of the day.”

Forrest said the town’s plan is unfolding as it should.

“These actions do take a long time,” he said. “And the process is playing out the way it is intended to.”

Elections BC published the results of its final count Wednesday, May 29.

For the electoral district of Cowichan Valley, the final tally of votes stands at 26,646, meaning 62.82 per cent of CV’s 42,417 registered voters cast ballots in this year’s election — close to five percentage points above the provincial average; a total of 1,803,051 of the province’s 3,116,626 registered voters — 57.85 per cent — cast ballots in the 2013 provincial election.

NDP MLA Bill Routley won a final total of 10,696 votes (40.14 per cent) to secure his return to Victoria as Cowichan’s representative in Victoria.

B.C. Liberal Party candidate Steve Housser came in second with 9,299 seats (34.90 per cent) followed by Green Party candidate Kerry Davis with 5,102 votes (19.15 per cent).

B.C. Conservative Party candidate Damir Wallener earned 1,223 votes (4.59 per cent), followed by Independent candidate Heather Campbell with 326 votes (1.22 per cent).

The final count resulted in a shift of no more than half a percentage point for any candidate’s share of the popular vote. Housser’s portion of the

vote dropped by 0.5 per cent between initial results published May 22 and the final count. Davis, meanwhile, received a 0.3 per cent bump.

According to Don Main of Elections B.C., a breakdown of how voters in Lake Cowichan, Youbou and Honeymoon Bay cast their ballots will be available “mid June” once Elections BC posts preliminary voting area-by-voting area results to its website in Excel format.

That will be followed “later in the year” by the Statement of Votes, Main said, referring to the 700-page report that chronicles the results of the May 14 election in painstaking detail.

The final cost of administering this year’s election will be published in a separate report early next year, Main added.

Provincially, the count resulted in the Liberals losing one seat to the NDP in Coquitlam-Maillardville, but the 35-vote spread is so slim it’s now subject to a judicial recount.

As of May 29, the BC Liberal Party held 49 seats compared to the BC NDP’s 34 seats.

Nobel Prize-winning climate scientist Andrew Weaver became the Green Party of BC’s first MLA in Oak Bay-Gordon Head while incumbent MLA Vicki Huntington returned to Delta South as the province’s lone Independent MLA. As for Coquitlam-Maillardville’s pending judicial recount, Main said it will begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday, June 4, but Elections BC does not know how long it will take.

“The last judicial recount took four days,” Main added.

Music returns to the Cowichan Lake Days main stage Friday, at 6 p.m. with a kick-off performance by the Good Times Band, followed by “Bob” at 7 p.m.

According to the Lake Days website, the Bandshell in Central Park will serve as the main stage venue.

Fronted by Elvin Heddon, the Good Times Band has been

described as a “long-time Lake Cowichan fixture.”

Bob, meanwhile, is a jam band featuring local musicians David and Mary Lowther and bandmates Jim Moffatt and Mike Jones.

Saturday’s selection of musical entertainment begins at noon with repeat performances by Jan Mathews Country at Saywell Park.

The young and talented Amanda Thate follows with a country music performance at 3

to 4 p.m.

Lake Days music wraps up Sunday, with the Lake Cowichan Minor Hockey Association offering up a deejayed countdown of “Top 100 Country” as a soundtrack for road hockey players and fans at Saywell Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Admission is free, but donations to the Lake Days Society are encouraged and visitors are reminded to bring their own chairs.

Falling in the coastal forests around Cowichan Lake and other parts of B.C. got a musical, historical salute just a half-hour up the highway.

Good Timber, Chemainus Theatre Festival’s musical-history lesson gave viewers a terrific glimpse into that colourfully crude, sadly bygone era.

We left understanding how the dangerous, dirty job that shaped out community chewed and spat out men too weak, or too stupid, to tame our tall timber.

Sub-dubbed Songs & Stories Of The Western Logger, six multiinstrumental musicians with The Other Guys Theatre Company strummed and sung their way into our hearts, spinning poetic yarns from the late logging icon and inventor Robert E. Swanson.

Violinist Sarah Donald’s frollicking fiddling nicely complemented lyrics by Swanson and others, set to music by fellow stage players Collen Eccleston, John Gogo,

director Ross Desprez, Kelt Eccleston, Mark Hellman, musical director Tobin Stokes — and a few other guys.

Toss in a kaleidoscope of heritage still photos and film footage, and the magical result was a field trip back to B.C.’s bunkhouses, backwoods, and brothels that spawned true Canadian legends, including some in Cowichan.

And the production had local angles of woodwork around Lake Cowichan, Hillcrest, Chemainus and Ladysmith.

Timber’s program packed a cool glossary of logger lingo including bull cook (floor sweep, bedmaker); board hole (hole cut in stumps for spring boards); skid road (road logs are dragged on); hi-ball (go fast); hay burner (horse); donkey (logging engine with drums); powder-monkey (man using explosives in the woods); jack (money); tongs (used to load logs on rail cars); gut hammer (dinner gong); and punk (signal man on a yarding crew).

Timber’s musical talk also mentioned high demand for chewing tobacco during the tune When Snoose Was King.

The ensemble’s Snoose song was among 22 falled including Legend of the Spruce, Chokerman’s Lament, The Apes of B.C., Climax Courage, Gal From The Soo, and Camps of the Holy Ghost.

From blues and Celtic to folk and old-time, Timber’s tales were backed by guitars, saws, hurdygurdy, metal percussion, harmonica and more, in keeping with its rough-hewn theme.

But Good Timber didn’t duck the fallout of all that logging, showing clear cuts arranged by company brains.

Short-sighted destruction spelled the beginning of the end for a frontier lifestyle forged by brave, hardy guys awed by massive cedar, fir and spruce stands that took days to cut by hand — until chainsaws and steam power caught up.

Indeed, The Other Guys staged delightful, audio-visual education for all ages and green-leanings.

Let’s hope it comes back to the valley again — or, better yet, Lake Cowichan — sometime soon.

You can place a free ad in the lost and found section of local newspapers. Posters with a clear photo and description of the pet and placed in the neighborhood, often work well.

If you cannot keep the pet for long then you may have to call a pound or animal rescue society for help.

Remember that someone is missing their friend and will be overjoyed when you return him or her.

As a pet owner the lesson to be learned here is to have lots of ID on your pet eg. tags, tattoo, microchip, message capsule on the collar.

The annual road hockey tournament has grown to the point where it is one of the signature events of the Lake Days on Sunday.

Road warriors and hockey aficionados of all ages are gearing up for the seventh-annual Cowichan Lake Days road hockey tournament Sunday.

With 120 players from 20 teams registered for the one-day tournament, organizer Kelly Bergstrom said the rosters are full and he’s no longer accepting new players.

“The schedule’s already made up and the shirts are ordered,” Bergstrom added.

For a $10 registration fee, players will receive a free t-shirt, food, a guaranteed minimum of four games’ worth of fun, “non-competitive” hockey and a chance at winning one of the countless prizes up for grabs.

“We hope to have every kid get a prize,” Bergrstom added. “That’s our goal and we usually come close every year.”

Games are 20 minutes long, Bergstrom said, and scheduled to be played four at a time from 10 a.m. through 4 p.m. on South Shore Road and at the

Saywell Park parking lot.

Bergstrom credited the “break-even” event with helping to revitalize a sleepy Lake Days Sunday.

“This isn’t a money raiser at all,” Bergstrom said. “We’re just hoping to get one or two kids out playing hockey. (The Lake Days Society) doesn’t make a single nickle off of it. It’s a break-even event for the good of (Lake Days.) The Sunday of Lake Days was pretty much dead until road hockey started and it really brought it back up.”

Players will be divvied up into teams based on average ages, Bergstrom said, and medals will be awarded in each age group.

The tournament’s being billed as a fun, familyoriented event, but Bergstrom said it tends to “get pretty competitive,” especially when it comes to the adult division.

As a result, the tournament’s being played in full protective gear, Bergstrom said, with players using tennis balls and “whatever they want” for hockey sticks.

Set to a backdrop of deejayed music, the tournament has proved to “really be a lot of fun,” Bergstrom said.

Hosting the tournament wouldn’t be possible without the help of their many sponsors, Bergstrom said, and he credited fellow organizers Vicky Bergstrom — his wife — and Jody Hieta for providing invaluable assistance.

Floyd wins three May rounds at March Meadows On March 9, under sunny skies, March Meadows Ladies played the second round of the Medal Cup Competition.

Low gross winner for the day was Kelly Feltrin and Corinne Floyd was runner-up. Low net winners were Veronica Clarkson, Lorraine Lawrence, Diane Kaiser, Christine McGovern, Lynn Girard and Elaine Winter.

The only birdie of the day was carded by Floyd.

Girard,Winter and Margaret Lavigne all shot chipins.

The KP (closest to the pin) was claimed by Sam Jones.

May 16 saw the third round of the Medal Cup Competition and Par Day. Par Day winner was Clarkson who also shot low net. Floyd was low gross winner. Kaiser shot the only chip-in of the day and was also the KP.winner.

The Pin and Spoon Competition and the qualification for the Lee Budden Competition was played on May 23.

Floyd was the low gross winner and runner-up was Jones. Sylvia Lingren shot low net followed closely by Phyllis Logan. Marion Zboyovsky, Lingren and Logan all shot chip-ins. The KP was not claimed.

The ladies played the Extended Handicap Competition and a Pin and Spoon round under misty skies on May 30.

Floyd was once again the winner of low gross with Jones runner-up. Claiming low nets were Logan and Winter. Floyd shot the only birdie of the day and Lavigne, the only chip-in. Jones was the KP winner.

The March Meadows ladies are looking forward to another run of good weather.

“We basically sold out of pastries by 12:30 p.m. Flo was still baking and we had 150 doughnuts all gone by noon!” said Bavarian Bakery co-owner, Daniela Saffer.

It’s year two of Lake Cowichan’s organic community garden at Lake Cowichan Secondary School and it’s ready for planting. There are a total of 10 boxes available to rent for year round growing. Currently there is one box that is four feet by eight feet by two feet, and six that are four feet by four feet by two feet, that are up for grabs. The larger box is $25 annually and the smaller ones are $15.

The rent includes access to water, to a secure garden shed and greenhouse that is equipped with wheelbarrows, hoses and some hand tools. There is also a compost area.

Rent can be paid by cheque (payable to LCSS) or cash.

Keys and receipts will be issued at the time of payment.

I am excited for this years theme of Lake Days Goes Country. It seems to have sparked some excitement with the volunteers and in the community. We have tried to incorporate country music into as many of the venues as possible and we encourage everyone in the town — and visitors alike — to wear their cowboy hats when attending Lake Days. If you don’t own a cowboy hat, the Lake Days Society has them for sale for $5 each and you will be able to pick one up as you come in to the grounds after the parade.

As always, I would like to wish all the Lady of the Lake participants all the best during their appearances this week. I know you will all shine.

There will be a sidewalk sale

again this year (between the new library site and Lakeview Avenue) right after the parade and it will go to 4 p.m. Also the road through town will be closed for the Giant Road Hockey Tournament on Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Your patience is appreciated. I encourage you to come out and support your local merchants during their sidewalk sale and make their efforts successful.

Have a good look at the schedule of events in this program so you don’t miss any of the excitement this week.

From the thrills of the Soap Box Derby, to the exhilarating lumberjack exhibition, and the always fun amusement rides, to the ahhhs of Baby of the Lake to scrumptious food — just to name a few of the Lake Days attractions — yeee hawww! Be safe and have fun!

➸ South Shore Road will be closed Saturday and Sunday, June 8-9, to accommodate the street sale and road hockey tournament. Motorists are advised to use the alternative route from the east end of town down King George Street, or Coronation Street, and come out Wellington Road to South Shore Road.

➸ The Lake Cowichan Foodbank Society will be collecting nonperishable foods throughout the Lake Days weekend—June 8-9—at the gate of the Sawell Park festivities. The summer months are always slow for foodbank donations, so drop some food off for those members of the community that are in need. ➸ Volleyball action will take place on Sunday only. If you want to play just show up at Saywell Park’s beach volleyball net at 9 a.m. The fee is $5 per person. This year it's "King of the Beach," not team play. The best player of the day wins all — the bragging rights. There will be prizes throughout the day. Call Mike at 250-749-0237 for more information.

➸ The Cowichan Valley Big Brothers and Big Sisters will be hosting children’s games at Saywell Park on both Saturday and Sunday. Games will consist of things like a bean bag toss, treasure chest, ring toss, ladder golf, and sucker pole. Organizers are hoping to also have a sling shot game for kids 10 and up. Games are $1 each for this fundraising event.

There will also be an info booth set up for those who are interested in volunteering for the program, as well as for those kids in the community who need a mentor. Organizers say that there are kids on the wait list for a mentor here in the community and it would be great to have local volunteers. Mentors need to be 19-years and up for the community program and must pass an interview and screening process. Volunteering consists of a few hours per week with the child, aged between six and 19. Comedian and Canada’s Got talent host Martin Short calls the West Coast Lumberjack Show “quintessentially British Columbian!”

The West Coast Lumberjack Show returns to Lake Days with two logger sports exhibitions at Saywell Park: 1:30 to 2 p.m. and again from 2:30 to 3 p.m.

An exhilarating, action-packed showcase of fearless skills and daredevil displays, the West Coast Lumberjack Show features exciting events such as chainsaw carving, the standing block chop, axe throwing, tree climbing, the underhand chop, the Jack ‘n Jill cross-cut, the hot saw race, the springboard chop, the cross-cut sawing race, crosscut versus chainsaw and the ever-popular log rolling.

West Coast Lumberjack Shows owner/president Darren Dean of Courtenay says his favourite thing about performing is making people smile.

“Our shows are performed to entertain people, and there’s nothing better than seeing everyone smiling and cheering during the show and walking away at the end of it with big smiles on their faces,” he said.

Lake Days committee chairperson Bob Day says the logger sports are very popular every year. They stop all the other activities during the show, and he

says they’ll usually see about 400 to 500 people standing around the stage watching the activities.

He recalls they did without the logger sports for one year and tried to bring in a most cost-effective alternative, but people kept asking where the show was.

“They wanted it back,” he said.

An event like the West Coast Lumberjack Show is one way to recognize Lake Cowichan’s logging history and bring some of the activities of the past to life for younger generations.

“To preserve our history, we’ve always wanted to have logger sports and lumberjack stuff join on, and it’s becoming harder and harder and more expensive to attract these kinds of things,” said Day. “The things people want to see, people don’t do it as much any more.”

The committee must pay for professionals like the West Coast Lumberjack Show to come in, and Day says they receive a lot of support from local logging and forestry-related businesses who provide donations so the committee can bring a show like this to Lake Days.

“They come at a cost, but it seems to be the only way we can preserve the history of the area,” he said. “The cool thing is the companies like TimberWest and Island Pacific Logging are able to help us out.”

Megan, 16, likes to keep fit with sports such as volleyball, soccer, and softball. Although she has a busy schedule she likes to paint with acrylics in her spare time. Next year, in Grade 12, she will be enrolled in first year university credits at the Duncan campus of Vancouver Island University. After high school Megan plans on attending university to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in psychology and minoring in fine arts and pursuing a career as a psychologist. She says that through the Lady of the Lake program she has learned public speaking, created closer bonds with her fellow contestants and organizational skills. Megan feels that the most important things to tell the world about Lake Cowichan are the many parks that we have and that the people here among the community are some of the friendliest you'll ever meet.

Molly,has goals of enrolling in Camoson's horticulture program and then pursuing a career working in green houses growing tasty local produce.

Molly's biggest dream in life is to own a large section of land with multiple green houses along with a Hobbit-like house where she can work from home and have a small store.

She enjoys hiking and reading to relax and calls archery an activity for some fun and a challenge. Seventeen-year-old Molly says that the Lady of the Lake program helped her to break away from her shyness and now finds it easier to strike up a conversation with people she doesn't know. She would tell the world about the beautiful mountains that beckon to be climbed and that give her a sense of home. Molly thinks our scenery and that some of the most friendly people anyone could ever meet live here are also worth sharing.

Sixteen-year-old, Carmen is a volunteer youth leader at Community Services and a volunteer youth rep on the Kaatza Lakeside Players Board of Directors. Carmen says that the Lady of the Lake program has been a dream of hers since she was little and that the program has helped her become more confident and improve her speaking and time-management skills. Carmen loves how Cowichan Lake comes together as a supportive community in times of need and how everyone smiles and says hello. She says that this is the best place to be in the summer. Upon graduating Carmen would like to go on a mission to Africa and travel for a year, then work toward her degree in political science.

She aspires to receive her masters degree in international development and work for the United Nations or a charity in an underdeveloped country.

Not to mention that the water here is by far the most lush and tasty. This a 17-year-old Cowichan High School student plans on getting her Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Biology. When she accomplishes that, she aspires to attend the University of Saskatchewan to obtain her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and open her own practice.

Chelsea wants to travel the world, but, for now, escapes through reading. Her future plans include going to university to study theatre, psychology, philosophy and english. The Lady of the Lake program has been the catalyst to help her with her anxiety of public speaking. Chelsea feels that as an ambassador of the lake it is important to maintain one's individuality while being responsible and a good rep for Lake Cowichan. Chelsea would tell the world that the Canadian stereotype is, for the most part, true: if you come to Lake Cowichan you will be greeted by smiling faces and friendly people.

Kiana,16,enjoys singing, dancing, reading, playing video games, cooking. She also likes spending time with her family watching her brothers' hockey and lacrosse games. Kiana says that she's always wanted to be a candidate for Lady of the Lake because she knew it would be a great experience to gain new skills, and for her personal growth not to mention the fun of being in a parade and wearing a gown! Through the program she's time management skills and how to be a good listener.

Kiana thinks some of the important things to tell people about the Cowichan Lake are the natural beauty, our heritage river and the recent town upgrades like the smart car charging station.

After high school graduation she would like to attend university to become an occupational therapist, specifically for children with special needs.

Nicole, likes playing soccer, shopping, going for walks and spending time with her family and friends. Through the Lady of the Lake program she has learned that public speaking isn’t scary at all, especially in Lake Cowichan because it is like talking to your family! Sixteenyear-old Nicole's favourite thing about the area is our lake in the summer time and all the people around. She would tell the world that Cowichan Lake is a small, loving community with tons of great people. She aspires to become a social worker through a degree at the University of Victoria. Nicole would also like to travel the world.

Sixteen-year-old Emily Anne's passion lie with nail art and will play to her goal of being nail technician. She finds riding her bike around town a fun thing to do. She has always wanted to be a part of the Lady of the Lake program and really likes the public speaking aspect.

Through the program she has learned how to present herself to other people. Emily Anne's favourite thing about Lake Cowichan is being able to walk down the street and jump in the river or lake and that is what she would tell the world. That and that once you visit beautiful Cowichan Lake, you will want to come again! Upon graduation of Grade 12 she plans on attending Vancouver Island University for the esthetics program and following that with the artificial nail course. She would like to work in a salon with girls who share the same passion as her.

Courtenay, 16, is passionate about hairdressing and she is already pursuing her dream of becoming a hair stylist at Vancouver Island University in Duncan. She wanted to be in the Lady of the Lake program for a fun new experience and she thought it would bring her closer to her community. Through the program she has learned that public speaking is harder than it looks. Her favourite thing about Cowichan Lake is all the beautiful places to hang-out in especially at the lake and river in the summer. Courtenay would tell the world that here, it's like a giant family — when someone needs help in the community we all pull together. Her future plans include finishing the hairdressing course and opening her own salon.

Shelby, 17, enjoys volleyball, paint-balling, sun tanning, shopping, sleeping, and playing with my pet hedgehog, Leroy.

Her future goal is to complete hairdressing and esthetics courses. She is also interested in massage therapy. Taking part in Lady of the Lake program has helped her build confidence and poise. The program has helped her improve on public speaking and meeting deadlines. Shelby says that her favourite thing about Cowichan Lake is that it’s a very small town where everyone knows each other. She would tell the world to come to the area in the summer-time because the weather is perfect for tubing the river, hiking and campfires.

Ashley, 16, says that as a career step and a hobby, she loves to produce short films and sketches with her friends and has a passion for acting. This Community Services volunteer likes being active in the community. Through the Lady of the Lake program, she has learned that there really is a place for everyone, no matter what you're interested in. Her favourite thing about the area is definitely the amazing people and of course the outstanding scenery. Ashley would tell the world that Cowichan Lake is the perfect place to raise a family — for such a small town, there are so many wonderful opportunities. When she graduates from high school she looks forward to attending film school to learn more about production and media.

This is a casual event where members of the community get to witness the talents of the Lady of the Lake contestants. There are 11 contestants this year, and each has been working hard to perfect their talents in order to entertain the audience. The event takes place in the Upper Centennial Hall, and admission is $5 for all ages.

“It’s pretty exciting,” he said. “We’re out there on our boats, and people are lined up on the bridge.”

Adding to the excitement, Douglas says you never know how long the KinDucky Derby will take. Sometimes, it’s windy and it takes a long time for the ducks to get down the river, but other times, the water will be flowing, and the derby will be over in 15 or 20 minutes.

People can purchase ducks for $5 in advance or right up until before the Kinsmen drop the ducks into the river. The Kinsmen will be selling ducks at the Breakfast in the Town Saturday, June 8 at 7:30 a.m. at the Town Office, and ducksTHEcan be purchased in 7-PASSENGER various local stores.

The ducks have cost $5 since the very beginning of the KinDucky Derby, noted Douglas.

When is it normal to see more than a thousand yellow rubber ducks floating down the Cowichan River?

During the KinDucky Derby, a popular Lake Days activity that has been taking place for about 25 years.

This year, the derby, which is run by the Kinsmen Club of Lake Cowichan, will take place Sunday, June 9 at noon.

Kinsmen Club member Troy Douglas says every year, they drop about 1,200 ducks into the river at the pedestrian bridge at “the Duck Pond,” and the ducks race down the river. The first

Blatchford says the Lake Days Dance usually attracts more than 400 people.

The dance is licensed, so it is not for minors, and there will be a concession during the evening. Doors open at 8:30 p.m., and the dance starts at 9 p.m.

Tickets are $15 each and are available from the Cowichan Lake Sports Arena, Youbou Hall and the Cowichan Theatre Ticket Centre Box Office in Duncan or at the door.

A bus service will be available for pickup and drop off to and from Youbou, Honeymoon Bay, Mesachie Lake and Skutz Falls, according to Blatchford.

An event to sink your teeth into Lake Days: Nearly 1,000 people expected to kick off their weekend by chowing down on pancakes and sausages Lindsay Chung

Fuel up for a busy day of fun in Lake Cowichan with the annual Breakfast in the Town.

Volunteers will be serving food hot off the grill Saturday, from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Town Office.

The breakfast is sponsored by Cowichan Valley Regional District Areas F (Cowichan Lake South/ Skutz Falls) and I (Youbou/Meade Creek), and admission is free.

Rita Dustow, president of the Cowichan Lake District Chamber of Commerce, says the breakfast has become a highlight for many families and is considered a kickoff for Lake Days.

“We get between 700 and 1,000 people,” she said. “Families have been coming for many, many years. It is really nice.”

Local not-for-profit organizations such as The Shriners usually set up tables and sell tickets.

Dustow says there will also be someone there selling tickets to the Lake Days barbecue at Saywell Park.

Anyone who wants to start their day with Breakfast in the Town can enjoy free pancakes and sausages, as well as coffee, tea and juice.

Dustow says many people will stay around the town office after their breakfast to watch the Grand Parade, which starts at 11 a.m.

Dustow says Breakfast in the Town has always been sponsored by Areas F and I, and groups like the Chamber of Commerce and the Lake Cowichan Fire Department have been volunteering for more than 10 years.

“It totally has become a tradition,” she said.
