Art gallery busted as drug house Daniel Palmer News staff

A downtown Victoria art gallery has been shut down because its owner was supplying drugs and moonshine to teenagers, according to Victoria police.

Officers executed a search warrant at The Loft Gallery, 819 Fort St., on May 22 as part of Operation Dali. Inside, officers found nearly 2,000 grams of marijuana, a large bag of hash, cocaine, prescription drugs and about eight litres of moonshine, a homemade liquor that can be poisonous when poorly produced.

A connected residence on Oswego Street also netted methamphetamine, ketamine and cash.

The drugs were being supplied to youth drug dealers doing business mostly on the corner of Douglas and View streets, said Const.

“Certainly getting the supplier … is going to put a dent in that,” he said.

Drug-trafficking charges are being recommended against a 38-year-old man and a 28-yearold woman, both of Victoria. A 19-year-old Duncan man, believed to be the gallery’s drug supplier, was fooled into meeting police with 900 grams of marijuana and was also arrested, Russell said.

Three suspect vehicles were also seized as proceeds of crime.

Community rallies for garden Local merchants got on board for Vic High’s garden project.

Denis Madsen, owner of Tower Fence, told an enquiring student that he grew up on Gladstone Street, steps away from the site. He was looking for a way to give something back to the community and donated the fencing and labour – more than requested – that protects the gardens.

Among other donors, and there were many, Vic West Rona offered up all of the wood for building the raised beds and Ellice Recycling provided the rich soil.

Students in Jim Pine and Andrea Hart’s classes, as well as the school’s garden club, will help maintain the beds until school lets out next month.

Through the summer, volunteers from the Greater Victoria Compost Education Centre, next door on Chambers Street, will regularly look after the plants and the harvesting.

Vic High garden project helps students make direct connection to the food chain A mound of good, black soil lays between two rows of rectangular garden boxes in a fenced-off section of unused playing field at Victoria High School.

Students and staff stand in two lines facing the sun, as per the instructions of the First Nations elders who are here to officially bless the gardens and the plants that have begun to sprout up from the soil. The sun, emerging almost on cue for the ceremony, represents the dawning of a new day and the promise of good things to come.

That is the message and the lesson on this day, that students can, if they put their mind to it, produce good, healthy food for themselves and their families.

Teacher Jim Pine recalls the eyeopening experience of a young student from a previous year. Pine’s comparative civilization class was visiting an aquaponic farm near the school and students were working in the dirt.

“She accidentally pulled up a tiny carrot and said, ‘I didn’t know that’s where they came from!’”

Pine says.

Such revelations, while incredulous to some, might be expected he said, “if the only place you’ve seen carrots is in a plastic bag at Thrifty’s.”

Pine makes it a point to teach students where everyday items such as water, electricity, and food come from. In having students create and tend to this garden and get their hands dirty, he says, “we hope to show a direct relationship between the work they do and the way things grow.”

Grade 11 student Ricky Adams likes the fact the gardens will provide a good source of organic produce.

“There’s so many different places that put chemicals in the food these days,” he says, standing next to his class’s planted rows of cabbage and cilantro.

Adams’ Grade 12 schoolmate Leroy Bell, whose mother took part in the First Nations blessing of the plots, took a more holistic

view of the project: “We’ve been taking a lot of resources (from the land). It’s about time we gave back to the earth.”

Hart, who also teaches Grade 9 science, says students may learn the names on the periodic table of the elements, but it’s good that they learn how certain elements combine in fruits or vegetables, for example.

“The big idea (with the project) is environmental sustainability, creating awareness of what that is and what we can do about it,” she says.

Vic High had a large, productive garden on the school grounds when the original building was erected 100 years ago. At the time, rural sciences were part of the curriculum and the produce was distributed to students and

around the neighbourhood.

Vic High principal Randi Falls says the new garden is a good example of project-based learning.

“We wanted to provide students with the opportunity to solve problems and work co-operatively in a meaningful and tangible way,” she says, noting the project brings the school full circle from the time the original garden was planted.

First Nations elders who gave their spiritual blessing to the garden spoke of the students going back to the basics by growing their own food, taking care of the Earth and each other.

Langford interchange to open in mid-June Charla Huber News staff

Katelynne Miller, 18, uses the crosswalk at Spencer Road to cross the Trans-Canada Highway every day on her way to attend classes at West Shore Learning Centre down on Goldstream Avenue in Langford.

She’ll need to find a new route as of June 15 when the crosswalk closes and the Leigh Road interchange opens.

“It’s sure going to be a hassle,” Miller said. “I’ll probably have to use the Millstream overpass.”

The new route will add about 20 minutes to her daily commute.

“It’s already taking me about 15 minutes to walk to school and half an hour to get to the gym,” she said.

The City of Langford is looking into adding an overpass at Spencer Road for pedestrians and bicycles, but that would cost $2 million the city doesn’t have in the budget.

While it’s “a lot of money” Miller said, “they will still need to build it.”

Until the overpass is built, pedestrians and cyclists will need to cross the highway at either Millstream or Leigh roads.

The interchange project went dormant after Leigh Road was extended to the highway and the bridge was installed in the summer of 2009.

The Leigh Road interchange is now slated to open at 6 p.m. on June 15.

“It was a quieter night to open without weekday commuters,” said Michelle Mahovlich, Langford’s director of engineering.

“We also didn’t want to open it right before the Canada Day weekend.”

Traffic patterns in the area will change as vehicles will be unable to cross the intersection of Spencer Road and the TCH. “A barrier will be placed across the road to the highway,” Mahovlich said.

The traffic signal at the inter-

section will be deactivated and the three ramps at the Leigh Road interchange will open.

People accustomed to making left turns off Spencer Road to the highway heading up-Island will now have to use Leigh Road to access the highway.

The intersection at Goldstream Avenue and Leigh Road is to become a four-way stop, but there will be a non-stop flow of traffic from Goldstream to Leigh Road.

A fourth ramp proposed for the interchange has no timeline scheduled for it. When it is eventually added, access to Goldstream Avenue from the TCH near West Shore Parkway will be permanently closed.

The interchange cost $25 million, paid for primarily by five private developers on Bear Mountain and South Skirt Mountain.

Elect senate or abolish it In the minds of many Canadians, the purpose of the Canadian Senate is a bit of a mystery.

It’s a body that’s not elected, what it accomplishes is less than clear, and news about it only erupts when politicians talk about reform, or more recently, when senators play fast and loose with the purse strings of taxpayers.

The original purpose of the Senate was to give a sober second thought to bills passed by elected Members of Parliament, and, according to its website, to bolster underrepresented groups, such as women, aboriginal people and minorities.

When it comes to being a champion of aboriginal, women’s or minority rights, the Senate is perhaps the last organization that leaps to mind.

As well intentioned as the Senate was when created in 1867, today the body is effectively a patronage system for the ruling party to reward loyal and often high-profile Canadians with prestigious well-paid jobs. A more cynical interpretation is the Senate acts as no more than a slush fund to carry out political favours.

This week B.C. Premier Christy Clark reiterated her stance that the Senate should be abolished. She said if that’s not possible, B.C. will start electing its senators in an attempt to bring some validity to the body which cost Canadians $106 million in 2012 (minus the $90,000 paid back by senator Mike Duffy).

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has long advocated reforming Senate terms and appointment procedures, or even doing away with it altogether.

That hasn’t stopped Harper from appointing 56 Conservative senators (and two elected in Alberta) over his time in office.

If Parliament can’t abolish the Senate or it accepts that it has a reason to exist, change is desperately needed. The number of senators per province isn’t based on population and it’s not supposed to be, but the current distribution is all over the map.

Does it make sense that New Brunswick and Nova Scotia have 10 senators each and Quebec has 24, while Alberta has six and B.C. has five?

For the Senate to have credibility, rather than act as a vehicle for patronage and self-serving party loyalty, each province should have an equal number of elected senators, perhaps two or four each.

Senators themselves should not be sitting silent, and should be seeking to reform an institution that has no accountability or credibility in terms of working in the interests of Canadians.

The model of regional integration currently being discussed won’t help either. It doesn’t go far enough to include core policing functions such as traffic, identification units, detectives or K9 and how we could use economy of scale to reduce all of our workloads. It unfortunately has remained at the level of things like the dive team, used by VicPD once in the last two years, and other ancillary functions which have virtually no meaningful impact on anyone’s policing services.

It also creates a cumbersome process of management by consensus, where four or more people end up being in charge and no one is actually accountable for service delivery.

So to respond to Mayor Leonard’s question: “Are you willing to pay for the cost of this community policing model?” My answer is: “I wish I could afford to, by freeing up the taxpayers and officers of Esquimalt and Victoria from having to subsidize your luxury.”

LETTERS ‘Greenest neighbourhood’ a fallacy Re: “A one-man green machine” (News, May 17) The first sentence claims “Gordon Head is the greenest neighbourhood in the country.”

What a sad and astonishing statement.

Oak Bay-Gordon Head may have elected a Green party candidate, but there is pathetically little evidence to demonstrate that the residents are “green” in any meaningful way. Just putting a blue box at the curb doesn’t cut it.

I live in the riding and during the election had a close look at the houses that put up Green party signs. One would expect these residences to stand out as examples of environmentally friendly living.

Not so. I have no way of knowing whether Green party voters grow all the food they eat, weave all their own clothes and make their own shoes.

But when it comes to transport, I can verify they get around just the same as everyone else. Many homes I checked had multiple vehicles in the driveway and more

It is easy to observe that Green voters behave just like the rest of the population, in which commuters overwhelmingly choose private cars over the bus and only a handful bike to work.

One expects Green party supporters to be avid users of solar power, but I saw only one

or two solar hot-water panels and no solar-electric arrays on any of the houses.

Even if they heed Capital Regional District watering restrictions, Green party voters should be keen water conservationists. I saw no evidence of rainwater recovery systems. Planted roofs? Didn’t see one.

The riding is characterized by aging, conventionally built, single-family homes on separate lots, normally kept tidy with highly polluting gas mowers and trimmers. If all this makes Gordon Head “the greenest neighbourhood” in Canada, our species is doomed for sure.

The past 12 years and the recent election have shown that the B.C. Liberals care little about facts, scientific evidence or the truth. In the face of this and as the only MLA for his party, Andrew Weaver may find, ironically, that his speeches in the legislature achieve little more than an incremental rise in global warming.

Details still missing from sewage coverage While I appreciate that the News continues to explore the sewage treatment issue, please reflect the complexity of the situation in your editorial.

Give us the details about the painstaking and costly studies that were undertaken, because it is my understanding that that is exactly the problem, there were little or no studies and much money has been spent with minimal community involvement.

And some of the studies that were done recommend a very different approach than the one the Capital Regional District is bullishly pursuing, i.e. smaller operations throughout the region and extraction of materials for re-use; the shaming headline that the Esquimalt/Vic West community is passing the sewage buck, while a catchy phrase is very misleading.

Historically this area has more than done its share. It has been the site of industries that left a legacy of pollution that is only now being remedied. It is becoming a vibrant community with families proudly reclaiming the older houses and new and innovative housing and businesses, including Dockside Green, that unlike the CRD proposal, produces drinkable water from its more technologically advanced sewage treatment system.

I am concerned that

the members of the CRD committee, now that they have spent so much money as well as risked their personal reputations by backing a flawed approach, will no longer be able to make an unbiased decision.

Our region voted in 2007 not to have centralized sewage treatment.

There is no hurry to do this.

Let’s take the time to get it right. We are all in this together and we all live in one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

Other choices available for sewage plants The Viewfield Road site in Esquimalt is the wrong choice for a sludge plant, given its small size as well as close proximity to residences, schools, a grocery store and many other businesses.

And no, I am not happy that my house is a mere 400 metres downwind from the site – more than 200 residences are within 600 metres.

Perhaps the complete treatment facility could be built on the McLaughlin point site if only DND would release some adjacent land for sludge treatment. That is unlikely to happen, as the release of such lands by the federal government would likely be met by an instantaneous land claim from the relevant First Nations.

So why doesn’t the Capital

Regional District expropriate a bigger, better site? Why not build these facilities on any golf club in the area, or the south part of Government House property in Victoria, or in Beacon Hill Park, or Uplands Park, or unused land at the University of Victoria, etc. That will not happen of course – the underlying criterion here appears to be ‘no effluent near the affluent.’

I’m sure that none of the councillors on the CRD sewage committee who are pressing for the Viewfield site live anywhere near it. Just whom are they serving?

I hope Esquimalt council does all it can to block the Viewfield site.

Legion building a step closer to approval Public hearing yields little new information for Esquimalt councillors Don Descoteau News staff

Esquimalt councillors heard a contrast between the sentimental and the practical this week at a public hearing for a new seniors housing and Royal Canadian Legion development proposed for 622 Admirals Rd. By the end of Monday’s hearing on Monimos Equities and Developments’ rezoning application for the property, councillors were convinced the need for a modern, purpose-built facility – one with a 12-storey tower – outweighed worries about losing the Legion in its present form.

“One resident had a really good comment,” Coun. Megan Brame said Tuesday. “She said, ‘this is about zoning, not the Legion.’ It’s a hard time for people to separate all the wonderful work the Legion does and the project itself.”

Council gave first and second reading to the proposal, which calls for a mixed-use building with 140 seniors independent living apartments and 12 “veterans dwelling units” managed by the Legion.

The Esquimalt-Dockyard Legion Branch 172 would have a scaled-down facility in the building.

Township staff will now consider comments from the public hearing, then bring a recommendation to council later in June. That decision would be the last major hurdle for the project to overcome in a process that has taken several years to reach this point.

Parking had been an issue with some residents, but the final version of the plans bumped the number of spots back up to 116 spaces, the number required under existing bylaws.

Coun. David Schinbein said most of the correspondence he received about the project leading up to Monday’s hearing was positive.

“The single biggest thing people said was that this is going to be a facility that’s affordable for

people in Esquimalt,” he said. Many of the comments came from people nearing retirement age who told him a complex purpose-built for seniors, some of whom are on fixed incomes, was lacking in Esquimalt.

Monimos Equities CEO Chris Fitzpatrick has heard the public’s concerns at various times through the life of the project. He said it was good that people had one last time to speak about the development.

“I think we’re there,” he said of the version of the project presented Monday in council chambers. “I think we’ve made all the changes and listened to council’s suggestions and come through the community process. There’s not a lot more we can do in terms of the physical design of the buildings, other than some minor exterior items.”

A Victoria institution will root in its historic site on Moss Street, after three decades of seeking space downtown.

“We’ve been looking 33 years for a place downtown,” said Jon Tupper, director of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. “If it didn’t happen in the last 30 years, it’s not going to happen in the next 10 years.”

“It’s a beautiful building, and they have built on the modern additions, so what we need to do is build on that and make it better,” said Joan Huzar, member of the Associates of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, which promotes

neighbourhood – it’s strange but strange in a positive way.”

The gallery at 1040 Moss St. is removed from the bustle of downtown, but the director, volunteers and Tourism Victoria don’t see location as a hindrance.

“The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria is one of Canada’s finest art museums,” said Holly Lenk, manager of travel media relations for Tourism Victoria.

“Its location, just five minutes outside of downtown Victoria, is easily accessible and just a couple of blocks from Don Denton/Black Press Craigdarroch Castle.”

With the decision to stay, last fall the gallery issued a request for proposals seeking architects who could add the required space, while maintaining the look of the neighbourhood.

“We’re not doing a good job of that,” Tupper said, citing the Moss Street side as an example.

Bentall celebrates 25 years News staff

Jewish parade celebrates anniversary Canada’s oldest synagogue is celebrating its 150th anniversary on Sunday with a parade through downtown Victoria.

Congregation Emanu-El will re-enact the historic 1863 parade in which synagogue members, freemasons, Christians and other faith and community groups came together to lay the cornerstone of the church.

CFB Naden band will lead the procession, which begins at the Freemasons’ Temple at Douglas and Fisgard streets at 11:15 a.m. on Sunday (June 2). The parade then continues to the synagogue at Blanshard Street and Pandora Avenue for an official ceremony at noon.

Mayor Dean Fortin and Israeli Ambassador Miriam Ziv will be in attendance at the event.

Grandmothers fundraise for counterparts in Africa The rhythm of African singing and drumming will reverberate through Centennial Square as grandmothers and others set out to stride two to five kilometres along downtown streets on June 8.

Walkers will wear colourful African scarves and kangas to show solidarity for the courageous and resilient grandmothers of Africa who walk every day out of necessity – to collect water and firewood, to deliver their grandchildren safely to school, to access health clinics, and to provide health care through home visits for so many living with HIV and AIDS. The motto of the national walk is “We stride … so she can turn the tide of AIDS.” Victoria Grandmothers for

Africa group, the event sponsor, has helped the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign raise close to $1 million over the past three years.

The money is distributed to African projects supported by the Stephen Lewis Foundation.

VENOUS DISEASE? In patients with venous disease, the internal walls of the leg veins are deteriorated and the small valves are defective and incompetent.

When a valve is incompetent -either in the deep or superficial vein system, blood flows backwards towards the foot. This is called reflux. When valves are incompetent in the superficial veins only, the deep veins have to carry more blood towards the heart.

To compensate, the veins expand and the valves may not close properly.

When this happens, such as in the case of severe varicose veins, the deep vein system may become also incompetent.

When blood is no longer pumped effectively from the lower leg, the peripheral veins will not be emptied even when walking. They remain filled with blood and the pressure in the vein will not reduce. This condition is known as chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) which may result in edema, skin change and in some cases ulcerations.

Signs and symptoms

Depending on degrees of severity, symptoms of venous disease or Chronic Venous Disorders (CVD) include: ✘ Feeling of swelling ✘ Feeling of heaviness in the legs ✘ Pain or cramps in the calves ✘ Skin discolorations ✘ White atrophy ✘ Dermatoliposclerosis ✘ Dermatitis (skin problems) ✘ Dry or weeping eczema ✘ Venous leg ulcer (open wound) Acute manifestations of venous disease are serious disorders such as superficial (SVT) or deep venous thrombosis (DVT). These disorders usually occur suddenly without pre-existing conditions, but can also be triggered by chronic venous disease. (see Chronic venous disease, Acute venous disease).

Causes of venous disease

The causes of venous disease are not clearly identified yet. Considering

risk factors we have to differentiate between varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency.

Risk factors for varicose veins are:

✘ Genetic disposition (history of vari-

cose veins in the family)

✘ Gender (1 out 3 women and 1 out of

5 men are affected)

✘ Pregnancy (30% of women will de-

velop varicose veins during the first pregnancy, and 55% will during their second and following pregnancies) ✘ Age (people older than 50, as older people are more susceptible to develop varicose veins) Risk factors for chronic venous insufficiency are: ✘ Professions requiring prolonged standing or sitting ✘ Gender (women develop edema more often) ✘ Obesity (CVI may develop even without reflux or obstruction in the veins) ✘ Age (older people are more susceptible to develop venous disease)

Can we cure venous disease?

Defective venous valves of varicose veins cannot be replaced or fixed.

Superficial venous refluxes can be repaired by surgical removal or sclerotherapy of the varicose vein(s).

However, chronic venous disease due to deep venous incompetence - such as in post-thrombotic syndrome - can only be treated by valve repair or neovalve construction in isolated cases.

Chronic venous disease evolves with time. The therapy consists of methods that help to reduce the “ambulatory venous hypertension”. Phlebologists, - physicians specialized in veno-lymphatic diseases -, all agree that compression stockings are THE basic treatment of venous disease.

High school triathlon debuts at Shawnigan Saanich teens lead way at Shawnigan Lake Subaru Tri Series Travis Paterson News staff

Holly Henry’s experience at the inaugural Western High School Canadian Triathlon Championship was a chilly one.

The 14-year-old student of Mount Douglas secondary was first out of the water after the 500-metre swim in the super sprint division, the newly added high school event at the Subaru Shawnigan Lake Triathlon on Sunday.

Henry looked in control as she remained in first after the 10-kilometre bike too, before she lost function in her fingers, and couldn’t transition fast enough from the bike to the four-km run.

“I had a really good swim and had a 45-second lead on the next girl after the bike but when I got to the (final) transition I couldn’t take my helmet off and put my shoes on because my fingers were frozen,” Henry said.

“I had to ask an official to help me take off my helmet.”

Because of the slow transition she dropped from first to fourth.

Among those who passed her were little sister Hannah, 13, who attends Arbutus middle school.

Crits aren’t generally his favourite, but Sunday’s Bastion Grand Prix is as rider friendly as they get in North America, he said.

“I raced in a crit that was 1.1 kilometres, with nine corners. It was pretty hairy, so I can’t complain about the Bastion Grand Prix, though it does have crash corner. You always have to be careful.”

Crashes have happened in many parts of the Grand Prix but the corner of Yates and Wharf is particularly dangerous. It’s also a great viewing spot for the race.

Leigh Mueller is getting back in the ring Friday night, this time for a world title belt.

The 31-year-old kickboxer and karate instructor at Canada’s Best Karate has been prize fighting for most of his adulthood, and this is his first time contesting for the World International Sport Kickboxing Association super welterweight title.

Mueller faces Kalon Milne in the headliner of Friday night’s (May 31) Hurricane Fight League kickboxing event in the curling rink at Archie Browning Sports Centre in Esquimalt.

The Hurricane Fight League is a local promotion with a handful of events to its name and with an

emphasis on kickboxing.

“I’m expecting the fight of my life and expect it to be tough, but I’m ready and I’m excited,” Mueller said.

Mueller has previously held the B.C. International Kickboxing Federation title and is a regular on the Victoria fight scene.

His top kickboxing student, Suraj Bangarh, will also fight for a World ISKA belt, against Kayne Young from New Zealand in the super lightweight category. “(Bangarh’s) title fight is in the middle of the event, the seventh of 14 fights, so Bangarh and Mueller can be each other’s cornermen,” said event coorganizer Kieran Mueller, Leigh’s younger brother.

Speaking their mind is something Greater Victoria high school students enjoy doing, if the results of the inaugural Royal Oak Rotary Club public speaking competition are any measure.

Finalists Ian Webber of S.J. Willis alternative school, Tamiko Sianen of Mount Douglas secondary and Alysha Rose of Stelly’s secondary, who went head-to-head last night (after the News deadline) at Spectrum community school, are the cream of the crop among more than 100 students who presented their thoughts on a variety of topics at school-based and semifinal showdowns.

Competition co-ordinator John Saunders, a retired university professor and current Rotary member, expected maybe a handful of local schools to take him up on his request to provide students for this new event.

Saunders was pleasantly surprised when 11 schools, eight in the Greater Victoria district and three in the Saanich district, took him up on the offer. The cash prizes of $1,000 for the winner, $750 for the runner-up and $500 for the third-place finisher were likely good motivators.

The quality of many presentations has been stunning, he added.

“When I sat in on the preliminary contest at Claremont, which had 14 students, some of them were exceptional,” he said, noting the overall quality of speeches in the semifinals was even more impressive. “I think the finals are going to be spectacular – I can just imagine what the top-notch students will do.”

At the school level, students had a list of 12 topics to choose from.

Point Ellice House takes visitors back to 1953 with a Royal Garden Party marking the 60th anniversary of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Visitors are encouraged to wear period dress, including hats and gloves, for the June 1 event, which will see the Naden Brass Ensemble perform and Lt-Gov. Judith Guichon offer an official welcome.

The Saturday event is a fundraiser for restoration of the heritage garden at Point Ellice House.

Staff are working on recreating the original garden layout built by the O’Reilly family, residents of the

house for three generations beginning 108 years ago. Seeds and plants from the garden will also be on sale.

The celebration runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is $15 in advance at the house or $20 at the door and includes a tour of the premises, afternoon tea and ice cream from the Beachhouse Restaurant.

Buick celebrates 110 years of building cars The first production vehicle, the Buick Model B, was offered to retail customers the following year.

search by Les for the drop head coupe would become an obsession.

In 2009, Ross Burkholder was browsing Ebay when he spotted THE car: a 1964 Morgan drop head coupe – “fully restored” in Hawaii. One click with a top bid ensured the search was over. The car was purchased for his father.

The original owner of this car was flamboyant San Francisco publicist Bob Zinkhon. When he had the car restored after years of use, he held a party with the car as the centerpiece at the San Francisco Palace of Fine Arts. “In my opinion, it’s the last classy car being made,” he was quoted as saying at the time. The car was sold when he passed away in 1995.

So now the car was on the dock in Tacoma. For Les and Ross Burkholder, the disappointment in discovering the car that had been described as being in “number two concours condition” was a very well-used car in need of a complete restoration turned to a determination to rebuild the car. “Even though the transaction was disturbing, this was still a good car. It was just misrepresented and needed to be fully restored,” Ross says.

Ross and his father rolled up their sleeves and completely disassembled the car to rebuild and restore every piece.

Their efforts were rewarded last year with a landslide of awards including best in class at the 2012 All British Field Meet held in Vancouver’s VanDusen Botanical Garden and best restoration overall at the prestigious British car

meet in Bellevue, Washington.

“I was totally dedicated to helping dad make this car better than new,” Ross says. “The need to totally rebuild this car actually brought us closer together.”

Both restored Morgans were among more than 600 vintage and classic cars displayed at the 2013 All British Field Meet May 18 at VanDusen Botanical Garden. A very proud Les Burkholder was on hand to display his cars.

He is now working on a very rare 1932 Morgan three-wheeler sports car.

Morgan is the world’s oldest family owned automobile manufacturer and the company is run by Charles Morgan, grandson of H.F.S. Morgan who founded the company in 1910.

Morgan three wheeler cars powered by front mounted motorcycle engines were built from the company’s inception 113 years ago until 1955.

Les Burkholder’s 1932 model was discovered hanging in a barn in England over two vintage Rolls Royce cars. The tiny car was flown to Canada where it was raced and rallied by a friend for more than 30 years.

Less and Ross Burkholder are doing a nut-and-bolt meticulous restoration of the car that will like be a debuting restoration at the 2014 All British Field Meet in Vancouver.

Triumph TR3. But the ultimate car for him was a Morgan and the drop head coupe was the one to have.

His excitement turned to disappointment when the crane hoisting his new 1962 Morgan sports car onto the ship portside in England dropped it into the ocean. Within a few months, another drop head coupe was shipped from the Morgan factory and Les Burkholder ultimately received his

dream car.

Three years later, after marriage, a move to California, acquisition of a basset hound, birth of his first son with another on the way, the need to relocate to Calgary forced the sale of his beloved Morgan drop head coupe. It was unceremoniously traded in on a used Volkswagen Beetle in Los Angeles.

Les regretted selling the drop head coupe almost immediately and the thought of getting another of these rare Morgan sports cars never left him.

In the 1990s, he bought a 1969 Morgan 4/4 which he and his son subsequently restored from the ground up.

His oldest son, Jeff Burkholder had also acquired a 1970 Morgan +4. But the

YAMAHA OUTBOARD BLOWOUT

Monster trucks and demo night thrill crowds at the Speedway Western Speedway welcomed a huge crowd last Saturday for a full slate of action, from Mini Figure 8s and Bombers to demo cars and Monster Trucks.

Following a thrilling night of racing, plus a special demonstration featuring the driving skills of three monster truck drivers – not to mention their ability to jump these mammoth wheels over a group of stacked cars – the night finished with a total destruction show, in which Dakota Hanson was the last one driving, Bobby Gyr took fast time for the Bombers at 19:733, followed by second place finishes in the Trophy Dash and Main Event, both times behind Jarrod Heap. Brian Wakelin took the flag in the first Heat Race and Phil Lagan in the second Heat Race.

George Haywood had a fast time of 21:277 for the Demo Trucks, along with with Trophy Dash and Heat Race wins, followed in second by Brandon Young.

The Demo Cars & Trucks held a combined Main Event featuring 17 vehicles for 15 laps.

Doug Richens had set the fast time for the cars at 20:682, a feat he followed with a second in the Trophy Dash, won by Jim Gallacher, and a third in the Heat Race behind Jim Young and Cody Young.

Shawn Hitchings got the win for the combined main event, followed by Richens, Jim Young and Jamie Morgan. Haywood was once again the top truck finisher, crossing the line fifth overall.

Rhett Szevics recorded a fast time of 12:910 for the Mini Figure 8 class, while Kyle Rizok captured the flag for the Trophy Dash, followed

by Brandon Young and Szevics. Shawn Young earned the win for the First Heat Race and Kail Beck the second heat Race, while the 15-lap Main Event went to Szevics, followed by Rizok, Brandon Young and James Young.

Coming up this weekend is the Richlock Rentals WILROC Non-Wing Sprints, Stock Cars, IMS4 Mini Stocks., Dwarf Cars and Hornets.

Qualifying at starts at 5:30 p.m., with racing to start at 6:30 p.m.
