Cougar killed in Coquitlam ‘Pretty bold’ animal seen lurking around homes

Coquitlam River Park is expected to re-open today after a cougar was shot and killed in the area Thursday morning.

The park had been closed for about two

days while conservation officers searched for a cougar that had been spotted close to nearby homes and back yards.

Initial fears that the numerous sightings over the past week or so might be a family of cougars appear to be unfounded, said Coquitlam’s urban wildlife co-ordinator. see STEPHENS, page 13

PoCo teacher gets 2.5 years Russell Read sentenced for sexual exploitation

A f o r m e r Po r t Coquitlam teacher has been sentenced to twoand-a-half years in jail for sexually exploiting two young people and administering a drug to one of them.

Russell Lance Read, 60, pleaded guilty late last year to two counts of touching a young person

for a sexual purpose and one count of administering a stupefying drug to commit an indictable offence.

He’ll serve 18 months in jail for offences that took place from July 1998 to February 2000 in Coquitlam, Victoria, Ladner and Vancouver.

That jail term will be followed by another 12-month sentence for crimes dating back to January 2001 to June 2003 in Coquitlam, involving a second victim. see READ LAST, page 13

Bear battle starts with clean waste bins Garbage can cleaning business will reduce bear attractants

A Port Moody couple is helping make their city sweet-smelling — one garbage bin at a time.

Marc and Amanda Perka have launched their BinBath.ca business just as just as bear season is getting underway. And the Percas hope the service for homes and commercial properties will make the city safer, as well as cleaner.

Bears are attracted to the smell of food in green waste bins. They start coming out of the mountains in April and May and if they find human food waste to eat, they often don’t leave, sometimes becoming a nuisance that requires them to be relocated or even shot.

In fact, 24 garbage and recycling bins have been damaged so far in the city this year.

“It’s quite a novelty at first, but then it becomes a safety issue,”said Marc.

He and his wife researched the business and purchased a European-made binwashing system that fits on the back of a truck.

“In Europe it’s a law that

residents have to clean their bins, for the reasons that Port Moody is experiencing right now,” Amanda added.

They recently demonstrated their efficient bin-washing system, during a visit by The Tri-City News. They showed how high-pressure water, followed by a squirt of deodorizer, can turn a green waste bin from a rank, grass-lined mess

into a freshly-washed bin. A series of filters separates out the debris and the water can be reused to clean more bins and no chemicals are used in the process.

“We’re essentially chemical-free. That has been a goal of ours. We basically use the hot water and the pressure,” Marc explained.

It’s a service will likely appeal to Port Moody

residents concerned about the smell of residue in their waste carts.

The smell of food waste, while it might be attractive to bears, is repellant to humans.

Currently, BinBath. ca is only available in PoMo, but the couple expects to expand in the future as more homeowners and businesses sign on for weekly, bi-weekly and monthly service and

more cities require food waste to be separated from garbage to comply with a 2015 Metro Vancouver ban.

Their home off April Road has been ground zero for bears over the years, and neighbors’ damaged garbage bins can be seen on the street.

When the Percas moved to PoMo from Alberta (Marc is an airline pilot and moved with his job),

the bears were a surprise — then a worry.

The couple researched the issue extensively, learning about the issue of bears and garbage, and various business models before settling on BinBath.ca. Amanda is in charge of the marketing. With a friend she designed the logo, and has been placing door hangers at most homes in the city. She also handles commercial customers as well.

He does the bin-cleaning on garbage day after the bins are emptied of waste.

It’s a dirty, smelly job and he wears a rain jacket and boots to do it.

A squirt of deodorizer after the pressure-wash bath and the bin is as good as new, and Marc is off to the next house.

“We’re asking people to give us a try,”he said.

Coquitlam voters may not be heading to the polls for a by-election.

Linda Reimer, a BC Liberal candidate who won the provincial election in Port Moody-Coquitlam earlier this month, said she wants to avoid a costly municipal byelection for herself.

In a May 30 letter to council that she also emailed to The Tri-City News, Reimer said she is asking for permission to take an unpaid

start June 10.

And if approved by council, Reimer said she would formally quit the position she has held for nearly two terms, on Jan. 3, 2014.

“I acknowledge that performing my council duties and MLA duties would be impossible and would be unfair to constituents who have placed their faith in me,” Reimer wrote in the letter, “yet, I do wish to save the taxpayers of my community the cost of a by-

election.”

Council is expected to discuss Reimer’s request at its June 10 meeting.

On May 14, Reimer won the seat held by BC NDP MLA Joe Trasolini with 46.39% of the vote; the former city mayor gained 44.29% while the Green Party’s Billie Helps reaped 8.19%.

Coun. Selina Robinson, the BC NDP candidate who won the provincial riding of CoquitlamMaillardville by 35 votes — a matter that will be subject to judicial recount on Tuesday, June 4 — offered no comment pending the final outcome. jwarren@tricitynews.com

More that 1.8 million people voted in the May 14 provincial election, for a turnout of 58% of eligible voters — up from the all-time low of 51% in 2009.

The 2013 turnout rebounded to the same level as the 2005 election.

Going back to 1983 vote, more than 70% of eligible voters cast ballots, but the turnout steadily declined after that to 55% in 2001.

The number of eligible voters has risen over the years with population growth. As a result, the B.C. Liberals got nearly 44,000 more votes this year than they did in 2009, with the NDP total increasing by 24,000.

Overall, 161,000 more people voted in this election than four years ago.

In another close race, Saanich North and the Islands, NDP candidate Gary Holman extended his margin of victory to 163 votes once absentee ballots were added to the election-night total that had him 50 votes ahead.

Once the results are made official June 5, MLAs can be sworn in and Premier Christy Clark can announce her cabinet lineup. Clark will also reveal where she will seek a seat, having lost Vancouver-Point Grey to the NDP’s David Eby. Clark has said several B.C. Liberal MLAs have offered to step aside for her, and she is considering running for a seat outside her home city of Vancouver.

School District clarifies Humphrey’s departure

Former secretary treasurer Rick Humphreys’ departure from School District 43 was by mutual agreement, The TriCity News has learned, and one of the conditions agreed to was his $148,495 severance.

Previously, the public and SD43 employees were told Humpreys left the district for personal reasons related to his health.

In a statement, super-

intendent Tom Grant confirmed the process by which Humphreys stopped working Grant for the Coquitlam school district and records show his last day of work was Dec. 19, 2012.

“We confirm that Mr. Humphreys and the school district agreed to the terms of his departure. One of those terms was the severance pay-

ment previously provided to you,” Grant stated in an email this week.

The information sheds more light on the secretary treasurer’s departure.

Approximately a month later, at a school board meeting Jan. 15,

2013, SD43 revealed it had a deficit of $7.5 million and would be making $5 million in non-staff cuts.

At the time, the board was optimistic the provincial budget might include more money to defray expenses and, though trust-

ees accepted blame for lack of oversight that led to the deficit, were hopeful the situation would improve as the year progressed.

However, to balance the 2013/’14 budget, $12.1 million in cuts, including 142 jobs had to be made,

with the district laying off management staff, clerks and teachers and not refilling other positions. As well, the district is expecting an $8 million deficit for this year’s budget but won’t know the full situation until the end of June, at which time

plans to pay it back over future years will have to be made.

Trustees have also agreed to hire auditors to look further into the district’s budget process.

Kim Rogelstad was last seen by her family on May 27, 2007, in the Coquitlam Centre area.

Cpl. Jamie Chung said police did receive some tips as to her possible whereabouts at the time, but none of them led to Rogelstad.

Rogelstad, who was 43 years old at the time of

Singh was from a different caste.

“If they found out, she would be in danger,” said Devos. “She told me they would kill her.”

Sidhu was determined to be with Singh and had returned to India to bring him to Canada when she was killed. She told Devos “he was her destiny.”

Devos testified that Sidhu’s uncle was the patriarch of the farming family and controlled all aspects of family life.

She spoke of two occasions when Badesha came to her beauty school and roughly grabbed Sidhu by her arm to take her home.

When Devos offered to call police, Sidhu told her that calling police would only make things worse.

“There was always somebody watching her,” said Devos, describing how Sidhu’s cousins and uncle would park outside the school every day for five and a half months to keep an eye on her.

Sidhu also told Devos that her family wanted her to marry a much older wealthy man.

Malkit Sidhu’s lawyer, David Crossin, tried to separate the mother from the action of the uncle.

“She was as much a victim in that family as Jassi,” he said. “A mother without power?”

A Maple Ridge woman who was the victim of an alleged “honour killing” in India lived in constant fear of her Canadian family, a former teacher testified Wednesday at an extradition hearing for her mother and uncle.

Deb Devos told the court Jaswinder Kaur Sidhu, who worked at a Coquitlam beauty salon, was closely monitored by her family while she was a student at Devos’ beauty school.

“It was clear she was terrified,”said Devos.

Known as ‘Jassi,’ she was 25 when strangled to death 13 years ago and dumped in a canal in the Indian state of Punjab.

Malkit Kaur Sidhu, her mother, and her uncle, Surjit Singh Badesha, are facing extradition to India, where they’ve been charged with conspiracy to commit murder.

The elderly pair sat on either side of a translator in the prisoner’s box Wednesday, barely reacting to testimony being heard by Justice Gregory Fitch. The family denies any involvement in the killing.

Final step in completion of New Horizons underway

An unusual 12-acre property that not only has the Coquitlam River bisecting it but also the David Avenue connector is set to be developed — and dedicated as parkland.

The land at the base of Burke Mountain, which on Monday city council granted first reading to rezone it, was bought in 2010 from longtime owner Molly Cooper for $6.5 million.

Now, Infinity Properties plans to have 38 singlefamily lots built on the forested site at 1388 Gabriola Dr. that, if approved, would complete the New Horizons neighbourhood.

Development manager Quentin Boulton said the company had to go back to the drawing board in 2011 after it received some negative feedback about the lack of green space.

For the new application, more than half of the area will be dedicated as park and for river setbacks. Besides the 5% park dedication required by developers (in this case, 0.6 acres), the property will also have a 3.31-acre riparian buffer on both sides of the Coquitlam River plus 0.42 acres of park next to David Avenue — all of which will be handed over to the city at no cost, Boulton said.

The city also intends to buy 1.92 acres from Infinity, on both sides of the river, for parkland, with funding coming from the new park acquisition development cost charges program, a bylaw that city council adopted in January.

Boulton said since the plans were reworked, Infinity has met with neighbours and environmental stewards, and most of the outstanding issues have been resolved.

Still, there are challenges with the narrow road in the 3300-block of Caliente Place, north of David Avenue, where Infinity plans three single-family lots, at the east end.

He said the company and the city have offered solutions to widen the road for the existing five residents, given the private concrete wall; however, those attempts have failed.

Coun. Craig Hodge said he has followed the proposal closely as it was a source of contention while he was doorknocking during the 2011 civic election campaign.

But, following the open house in February, he said only the regular concerns for a new subdivision exist — namely,

extra traffic, lack of onstreet parking and noise.

“I’m looking forward to this going to public hearing as we have already heard a bit about this in the community” of New Horizons, Hodge said at Monday’s council meeting.

During a visit to the property on Wednesday, Boulton said Infinity “has done its due diligence” and has listened to what the neighbours and stewards want — and don’t want.

The TransCanada Trail will be kept intact and new trails will go in.

Gabriola Drive will be extended east of Anvil Crescent and two cul-desacs will be built within the subdivision.

Ian McArthur of Coquitlam RiverWatch said he’s pleased the riparian area has been protected.

“Now that this development is most likely to go ahead, we would like something done to improve the health of the environment in this area,” he wrote in an email. “We would like to see the storm sewers, which drain Westwood Plateau just south of this

proposed development, daylighted from the west branch of Gabriola Drive to the Coquitlam River.”

Should the plans be green-lighted following the June 24 public hearing, servicing and road construction would start this summer with home building in late fall, Boulton said.

Infinity, which is currently developing a new subdivision on land formerly earmarked for an elementary school in Prince George’s University Heights, used to be called BFW Developments Ltd.

Pierlot takes over ‘progressive Coquitlam Current and expanding’ municipality Your City Column

As the deputy chief of the Vancouver Fire D e p a r t m e n t , Wa d e Pierlot has seen plenty of action in one of Canada’s biggest cities.

In the past few years, Pierlot was the face of the fire service to respond to the impacts of the closure of the Kitsilano Coast Guard base. He was also in the limelight to answer questions about the Stanley Cup riots. And he was part of the emergency operations team for the 2010 Olympics.

Now, Pierlot is taking over a fire department in a community one-fifth of the size of Vancouver but with the same big-city problems.

dent who is expected to end his 32-year career in Coquitlam in three to five years.

The Evergreen Line, due to be built by the summer of 2016, and the ongoing construction of highrises are also issues for the fire service that employs 183 staff (156 of them firefighters) and manages an annual op-

erations budget of $22 million — versus $90 million in Vancouver.

Coquitlam, Pierlot said, “is progressive and expanding. There is some big city stuff happening here but just on a smaller scale.”

Pierlot, 53, said he’ll continue the course set

by Delmonico, who during his tenure brought in more firefighters and vehicles. Coquitlam “is a very well-run fire service” that has a good relationship with the city and labour union, he said. “It’s exciting to be part of a service that’s excelling.”

M e a n w h i l e , Delmonico plans to carry on with the BC Forest Service as a sprinkler protection specialist during the summer months.

He replaced Gord Buchanan, who also retired after five years at the head of the department. Pierlot was one of four fire officers shortlisted for the top job out of more than 30 candidates.

Coq. River roundtable seeks input we’re big on

The health of a river is only as good as the communities surrounding it and if more people care, the Coquitlam River, will be healthy and strong for generations to come.

At least that’s the view being taken by the contributors to a new watershed plan for the Coquitlam River.

Craig Orr, executive director of Watershed Watch, is a strong believer in the spiritual connections people have with nature. And to that end, the ecologist is moving beyond his usual scientific positions to talk about the human values attributed to nature.

It’s part of a new ap-

proach to watershed planning and setting goals to protect the river. orr O r r ’ s group is one of a number of stakeholders, agencies and individuals participating in the Coquitlam River Watershed Roundtable.

The project has been in the works for several months, and has recently hired a co-ordinator and set up a website.

Now it’s about to pioneer a process to develop a unique watershed plan and is asking interested groups and individuals to take part.

We’re trying to figure out the spiritual benefits,” Orr said.“One of the great enjoyments people get is just walking along it,” he added.

Quantifying that relationship is the next step, which is why people are encouraged to participate in a poll through www.placespeak.com and spend about 20 minutes answering 25 questions about their relationship to the river and

the importance they give to its natural values.

In addition, a workshop called Planning for our Future: Watershed Health and Challenges is being held Thursday, June 6 for the public to confirm key values for the plan and help fill gaps to complete the watershed health assessment. Among the indicators being looked at are: water flow rates and quality, health of forests along the river

banks, salmon health, natural areas and open spaces, livable communities, human health and safety, resource industries, stewardship, cultural and spiritual.

The final plan will guide participating agencies, such as Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, BC Hydro, the gravel industry and other organizations that have jurisdiction over the river or benefit from its resources.

The workshop will be held at Coquitlam City Hall, and will include a light meal. There is no fee to attend but pre-registration is requested before June 3. To learn more, visit www.coquitlamriverwatershed.ca.

It’s been moving steadily northwards from the U.S. west coast since the 1980s and mechanical removal efforts have proved ineffective.

id you hear the one about the two-lane road running through a busy industrial zone that ends in single-lane bailey bridge?

It sounds like a joke with a bad punchline but it’s one of the biggest bottlenecks in the region. Even though the bridge is narrow, and the route connecting New Westminster and Coquitlam has two railroad crossings running through it, cars and trucks still travel over the bridge, waiting patiently at the light for their turn to cross.

There are other avenues to United Boulevard — the freeway and Lougheed Highway via King Edward are two — but for some reason people like taking this crossing over a bucolic stretch of the Brunette River. It must remind them of little lode England — all that’s missing is a family of ducks.

Of course, there’s no end to the dispute over how to clear up the bottleneck and replace the bridge and no guarantee mediation will solve the problem either. It’s just a little anachronism in an otherwise busy world where everyone wants to get somewhere fast.

Better cycling infrastructure is needed AS I SEE IT Adrian MacNair

T

he grisly aftermath of a bicycle accident on the Stanley Park causeway last week has left cyclists and drivers alike horrified by the thought.

On Saturday evening a female cyclist made contact with a pedestrian on the shared sidewalk, causing her to fall in front of a bus. She was killed instantly.

According to ICBC statistics, fatalities are relatively rare, with a five-year average of nine deaths each year across the province.

But accidents tell a different story.

Of the 1,400 annual accidents involving bicycles in B.C., 960 take place in the busy Lower Mainland. And because a bicycle is usually no match for a car, when an accident does take place many of those injuries can be fairly serious.

Adrian MacNair It’s poor timing that this horrific accident happened on the eve of Bike to Work Week (May 27 to June 2), a non-profit society urging more people to get out of their cars and onto two wheels.

But accidents like this won’t help them achieve that. Not when infrastructure isn’t

in place to protect cyclists from serious injuries, or even death.

Sometimes an accident is just that: an unpreventable incident of misfortunate circumstances. This fatality was not that.

Ironically, Vancouver’s current council has been one of the most vocal proponents of expanding bike lanes to protect cyclists downtown and on the Burrard Bridge.

That didn’t prevent Vancouver Coun.

Geoff Meggs, a vocal bicycle advocate, from being in a serious accident himself in March, 2010.

Meggs was riding on Angus Drive in Vancouver, a designated bicycle route, at West 51st Avenue when he was struck by a car and knocked unconscious.

At the time of the incident, fellow councillor Suzanne Anton said cyclist safety amounts to something of a paradox, where drivers will become more aware of cyclists if there are more cyclists, but there won’t be more cyclists until there is better protection

for riders.

I have been in two serious accidents myself, which diminished my enthusiasm for two-wheeled transport. The first was eight years ago in Toronto when I was struck by a Honda Civic and the driver jumped out and demanded I give him $1,000 for the damage to his front end.

The second time I was powering down a hill in Vancouver through a right-of-way when a car blew a stop sign and sent me flying. My shoulder has never felt 100% since.

Cycling advocates are putting the cart before the horse. We don’t have the infrastructure in place for commuter cycling in Lower Mainland communities. How many more deaths will it take before we do?

FACE TO FACE: What now for the New Democrats?

Dump Dix and retool message I’m assuming that the NDP have fired all their expensive political strategists after their humiliating defeat in last month’s election.

If they haven’t, they should.

I’m more than happy to give the NDP some free advice. If they follow it to a tee, they will form government in 2017. Hey, they couldn’t do worse, right?

So, here’s my three-point plan.

First on the list, of course, is dump leader Adrian Dix immediately.

Dix is a good guy but he’s proven himself to be a poor politician and a liability to his party. It serves the NDP no purpose keeping a political loser around being the primary spokesperson for the party.

The party needs to rebuild and rebrand and get on with the job at hand which is presenting themselves as a government in waiting.

That government doesn’t include Dix. Which takes me to point two: Move the party towards the centre of the political spectrum.

The BC NDP has only won three mandates in the history of their party. The only time they’ve won is when the right was divided.

They need to appeal to a

broader base and the only way to do that is by dropping ‘socialism’ from the preamble of their constitution (like the federal party did) and develop a business-friendly platform. Maybe a pro-business with a heart spin could work.

And finally, the NDP needs to get a high-profile leader with proven experience. I’m sure we’ll hear names like Mike Farnworth, John Horgan, David Eby and Gregor Robertson over the next several months. But it’s time to get somebody who can actually win an election.

Specifically, they should start wooing Federal NDP House leader Nathan Cullen.

Cullen has an impressive resume: The current MP for SkeenaBulkley Valley was raised in Toronto but moved to rural B.C. as an adult. He was first elected to Parliament in 2004.

In an interview I had with him in 2012, he said he wants to do politics differently, that he’s more pragmatic than partisan. That’s exactly what the NDP needs.

So, there you have it — the keys to victory in 2017: Dump Dix, move right and pick up Cullen.

Oh, and a few vintage Christy Clark gaffes over the next four years couldn’t hurt.

So, after their recent provincial election thrashing, where does the NDP. go from here?

My callow colleague over there says the party should, much like the Canucks, fire the coach and consider a move to the political middle, as if party policy had anything to do with the election results — ridiculous.

Still, having parlayed a 20% lead into a 5% loss in scant weeks to a hated, dishonest government, surely the NDP must substantially change something — but what?

They might start by accepting that the NDP only wins elections when people are fed up with right wing governments. Each party enjoys 40% support; it’s the remaining, shoulder shrugging 20% that swings elections in B.C. To win, the party needs the fleeting, voting booth impression of these apathetic voters to be anger with government, not ginned up horror about the nineties.

Next, they should face the fact that they blew the richest pool of government malpractice ever offered up by a government seeking re-election. The electorate had so much to be angry about and they were furious.

With their “positive” campaign, the NDP squandered twelve years of odious government scandals, scandals now purged by the election results.

The decision to run a positive campaign was a massive blunder.

So shouldn’t Adrian Dix be scalped for this horrendous strategic blunder? Perhaps, but not yet.

Because Liberal sins are quickly forgotten and NDP sins have twenty years of traction, Liberal scandals have to be gnawed on with pit bull tenacity.

And Adrian Dix is the best legislature pit bull since Joy McPhail.

He has an encyclopedic knowledge of government policy and is overwhelmingly incisive in opposition.

Besides, a new NDP leader now would draw fire for four years at a time when buyer’s remorse and anger with Liberal government missteps should be cultivated.

So, where to now? Well the NDP could get greener and annex the Green vote.

But before doing anything else, they must agree that there can be no more mister nice guy.

Though the overall impact of all electric vehicles is calculated to be less, it is only slightly less.

Rare earth minerals for batteries require mining in sensitive areas like the Serengeti Wilderness, oil products are still used for manufacture of all the plastics required and recycling of retired vehicles presents unique problems.

Pe r h a p s n o G H G emissions produced during actual operation, but does that sufficiently offset all of the other problems?

The answer is to improve efficiency — not necessarily concentrate on fuel source.

Go slower. Carry less weight. Go less often.

Fix roadway congestion.

New internal combustion engines are extremely efficient and clean burning and they are not the enemy they used to be.

Hybrid vehicles are a better choice than all electric because they allow internal combus-

tion engines to work at their peak efficiency for a much longer part of the duty cycle.

The Editor, I had to shake my head in total bewilderment when I read in Wednesdayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s edition of The Tri-City News about the draft Partington Creek Neighbourhood Plan getting approval for the first reading and then to continue reading that some councillors are voicing concerns about the lack of green space in the neighbourhood where density will be high.

They canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be serious, can they? Â They had acres and acres of green space until a few years ago when thousands of trees were felled to make way for this huge development on Burke Mountain and the cookie-cutter homes that sit there now. Â And to leave out of the plans the green space? Â I guess cramming thousands of homes into this once-beautiful area was more important than saving the green spaces.

Last week a cougar attacked a dog in the back yard of a home on Sasamat Lake in Anmore — and took a swipe at the teenager who tried to come to the dog’s rescue.

Residents were asked to stay away from the Coquitlam River Park and to be cautious in all areas surrounding the Coquitlam River.

Read was also sentenced to 12 months, to be served concurrently with the other terms, for administering an overpowering drug with intent to commit sexual exploitation.

Each of the sentences come with a lifetime order on the National Sex Offender Registry.

Details of the offences are limited because of a publication ban to protect the victims, but Read’s conduct as a teacher has been investigated before. Read’s last position was at Citadel middle school in PoCo, between 1996 and 2004, where he taught computers and coached rugby and volleyball, as well as working with the choir.

He was suspended from teaching in 2009 and given a 10-year ban from re-certifying by the former B.C. College of Teachers (now the B.C. Teacher Regulation Branch). Read was also investigated by the college in 2008 for incidents between 2002 and 2004, which he agreed constituted professional misconduct, including referring to students as “Grade 12 babes”in an email.

The City of Port Moody is seeking an expression of interest for expanded food vendors during the Summer Concert Series at Rocky Point Park. This active park contains an outdoor swimming pool, walking and cycling trails, a fine dining restaurant, a picnic area and a well equipped children’s play area, as well as a high volume boat launch and parking facilities.

In order to enhance the enjoyment of park users attending the Summer Concert Series, the City is seeking an expression of interest for additional food vendors during this special event. The City currently has agreements with two (2) food vendors, providing fish and chips, hamburgers, french fries and ice cream products. The City of Port Moody is seeking interest from two (2) additional experienced operators who are eager to provide food vending services that will expand the current market provisions for a minimum period of eight (8) consecutive Sundays, during park hours, from July 7 until August 25, 2013.

Cops seek alleged liquor thieves Coquitlam RCMP hope to identify two suspects allegedly involved in a Coquitlam liquor store break-in last month.

In the early morning hours of April 24 the two men reportedly forced their way in through the front door of a liquor store on Como Lake Avenue. Once inside they targeted the bottles of high value specialty liquor and allegedly stole a number of them.

Coquitlam RCMP responded to the incident in the 2300-block of Atkins Avenue at about 2 p.m.

The two victims were inside the residence at the time they suffered

Investigators believe the suspect is known to the victims and an edged weapon may have been involved. The suspect fled the scene after the alleged stabbing and is currently at large.

Migratory birds often return to previous year’s nesting spot green scene Elaine Golds Lazuli buntings visit the Tri-Cities

F

or people who enjoy watching birds, there is no better season than right now. The early mornings are filled with the songs of male birds calling for females and every day, more species of migratory birds arrive from their southern winter homes to nest here during the summer.

One of the best local places to view birds is at Colony Farm Regional Park where over 200 species have been identified to date including the beautiful lazuli buntings.

Throughout the month of May, several species of birds, including warblers, swallows and flycatchers have been arriving at the park to find mates and initiate a new nesting season.

One of the features that attract birds to Colony Farm is the oldfield habitat — the tall grass fields which mimic the natural meadows once found at the edge of the advancing Fraser River delta. As a consequence, the park attracts some species which are now rarely found elsewhere in the Lower Mainland.

Often, it takes a magical combination of several features to create ideal nesting conditions.

Breeding birds need to be close to reliable sources of food, which they will feed to their young. They also need safe nesting areas, often hidden deep within a thicket or sometimes even close to the ground in a tangle of grass.

Finally, most male birds like to have some sort of perch close to suitable nesting habitat from which they can attract

Every year, millions of birds that spend most of their time in tropical areas, fly north each the fields and forests come alive every summer with a bounty of insects.

Long before the advent of chemical pesticides, farmers relied on migratory birds to help them keep populations of harmful insects under control.

Now the tables have turned.

Farmers who rely on pesticides to boost crop production are often unwittingly harming juvenile birds, which are fed a steady diet of pesticidepoisoned insects by their doting parents.

While some of the mysteries of bird migration have been unraveled in recent years, there is still much to learn.

Through techniques such as bird banding and the use of very light weight transmitters, biologists have learned that most small songbirds migrate at night.

They apparently have the ability to take a bearing on the setting sun and fly along migratory routes established over time with the evolution of each species.

Each night they may fly 300 kilometers or more. As dawn approaches, they must stop to rest, feed and gain sufficient energy for the next night’s journey.

Only birds that find sufficient food throughout the day will have the energy to continue their flight at sunset. Thus, these migratory birds are highly dependent on finding critical layover stops along their way.

If a forest has been logged in the past year, a wetland drained or a field developed into suburbs, some birds could perish when they discover the habitat they relied on as a fuelling stop has vanished. In general, migratory birds predominate among the bird species that are undergoing dramatic population declines.

Speculation is that a dependence on critical habitat throughout their migration corridors puts these birds at higher risk from habitat loss than birds which stay in the same place all year.

I fondly remember when barn swallows and tree swallows were a common sight on my street. Sadly, I have seen neither species for sev-

eral years in my neighbourhood.

Individual birds tend to return to the same nesting areas. After all, if they nested successfully one year, it only makes sense for them to return to a familiar area where they know the location of the best food sources.

Thus, the rufous-sided hummingbirds you might see in your yard this spring are probably the same ones or the offspring of the ones present last year.

In my backyard, male black-headed grosbeaks arrived from southern Mexico right on schedule on May 14. The first female arrived in our yard on May 17. While these adult birds enjoy feasting on black oil sunflower seeds, when it comes time to feed their young, they will switch to catching insects. The annual return of these migratory birds gives me faith and hope in the ongoing cycles of nature and encourages me to continue working to preserve wildlife habitat.

For people who wish to learn more about migratory birds and enjoy viewing them, free birding walks will be offered this weekend at Colony Farm Park. Among the many birds expected to be seen will be blackheaded grosbeaks, common yellowthroat warblers, cedar waxwings and the spectacular lazuli bunting which migrates from Mexico and typically arrives at Colony Farm Park in the third week of May. These walks which will last for about 2 hours will start at 9 am and 3 pm on Saturday, June 1. The walks will depart from the parking lot at the end of Colony Farm Road in Coquitlam and will be led by experienced members of the Burke Mountain Naturalists and Colony Farm Park Association. The walks will be on level ground and suitable for all ages.

Two years ago Clyde Nakashima sustained brain damage in a devastating car accident and was in a coma for six weeks.

The doctors had almost given up on him.

It’s taken months of rehabilitation and Nakashima credits several things for his success thus far: his wife, for sticking by him and refusing to let the health system give up on him, the doctors and occupational therapists who worked with him for months and his own determination.

But the master carver and former computer sales rep also gives a lot of credit for his hardwon mobility to his friends who practice qi (pronounced chee) gong

Both sustained injuries in car accidents but Thomas has long since healed and now passes his qi energy on to Nakashima to help him recover. and the group’s leader, Dr. John Loh, a Port Coquitlam chiropractor.

“I knew inside my head something good is happening,” Nakashima said of his gradual healing.

Nakashima was one of more than a dozen qi gong practitioners who had dim sum together last Tuesday to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Coquitlam group.

Almost every Sunday morning for the last 20 years, about 30 to 35 people take part in a se-

ries of 52 exercises to channel positive qi energy. They meet inside Coquitlam Centre (outdoors on sunny days) near the Target store, formerly Zellers. In addition to their individual exercises, group members share their qi energy with people recovering from serious illnesses or injury.

Dr. Loh has been leading the exercises for free because he believes in their powerful effect. But participants make a small donation

Loh’s interest in healing started early, as a child in Malaysia, watching his father suffer from an illness no one could explain.

He got better, but Loh stayed interested in the healing arts, eventually becoming a chiropractor, and moving to PoCo, where he and his wife, Trudy, raised their two sons.

“They are very soothing movements,” explained Loh, of the exercises, but the channelling of the energy also causes the body to shake, something that is distinctive about this ancient Chinese self-healing practice.

Doug Thomas, who has been practicing qi gong for 17 years with Loh, said it helped him overcome whiplash from two car accidents.

“This was a natural outlet for me,” said Thomas.

Child advocates recognized Local residents and organizations honoured at awards gala Tri-Cities Champions for Young Children Awards of Excellence, held May 23 at We s t w o o d P l a t e a u Golf and Country Club, recognized the work of several local residents and groups.

Working as program assistant through the Supported C h i l d D eve l o p m e n t Program with the staff at the Friendly Forest Preschool in Anmore for 16 years, Carol assists families in getting the supports and services they need for children who have special needs.

• The Port Coquitlam Daycare Society is the 2013 Champion Group Winner. The staff at the centre emphasize the importance of the relationships between parents and caregivers and emphasize outdoor play in their use of emergent curriculum.

• Diane Spooner won for the 2013 Individual Champion. She operates the YMCA Little Scholars Daycare at CABE School in Coquitlam and has been doing so for 20 years. Getting help for hoarders

It’s a desperate situation brought on by anxiety and a compulsive need to save, collect or stockpile things mostly of little value. It’s called hoarding and if you or someone you know is a hoarder you may need help.

The problem is assistance may be difficult to get unless you have an underlying mental illness, but left untreated or unresolved, hoarders may be burying themselves in their clutter, putting themselves or their neighbours at risk.

“Think about the debris — it’s a huge fire hazard,” said Mary Longworth. “Something must be done so it doesn’t become an unsafe environment.”

She’s a clinical counsellor working with hoarders in the Fraser Health region and fears many people are going without help or support to deal with their issue.

Approximately 5% of the population is believed to suffer from this condition, obsessively collecting things such as books, papers or other household items, without being able to get rid of anything.

The problem often goes unchecked until firefighters or bylaw officers are called out to address a safety issue or a complaint. Longworth, who uses cognitive behavioural therapy to help hoarders deal with their anxiety, has formed a business with two other colleagues to create Hoarders’ Helping Hands.

Hoarding is an issue that has arisen elsewhere: the cities of Vancouver and New Westminster have it on their radar. But it’s not considered a problem in Port Moody, Port Coquitlam or Coquitlam, where only a handful of hoarding cases are dealt with each year.

In Vancouver, a special action team was formed to deal with hoarding cases and is working with UBC to study the effectiveness of the approach. New Westminster wants the province to help cities deal with hoarding.

The issue hasn’t been raised to any degree in the Tri-Cities or by Fraser Health, but probably should be, said Jackart.

“We are hoping to open people’s eyes to see it as a condition,”she said.

She has seen or heard of hoarding cases where items pile up until they get to the point where homes need special treatment. Costs can be extensive, up to $12,000 in some cases, and landlords are often caught in the middle, dealing with tenants who don’t have the money or the ability to get rid of their clutter.

HIDDEN PROBLEM

Between three and six cases of compulsive hoarding take place in the Tri-Cities each year, but more likely remain

hidden behind closed doors.

In PoCo two years ago, a fire destroyed a house but it wouldn’t collapse because there was so much material and the resident slept in a tent on the lawn.

Yet it’s not unusual for hoarding situations to go undetected because firefighters have limited authority and only enter a private home upon complaint.

“Because it’s private property [entering people’s homes] it is a tough thing to do,” said Shawn Davidson, Coquitlam’s assistant fire chief.

When they do gain entrance, they are restricted to dealing with safety issues, such as blocked doors and windows, combustible materials near an ignition source or heavy items placing too much load on an apartment floor.

Port Moody Fire Chief Remo Faedo said residents with hoarding issues usually comply, but families are often left disappointed because there is only so much emergency responders can do.

“We’re not necessarily disturbing their lifestyle, we’re asking for a minor modification, providing clear paths to exits and keeping the stove top clear of combustibles,” Faedo said.

When the clutter extends out of doors, it’s up to bylaw officers to deal with it, but they, too, have have limited authority. Dan Scoones, Port Coquitlam’s manager of bylaw services, said prop-

erty owners can be ordered to clean up outdoor clutter or are handed the clean-up bill if the city has to do it.

“We’ve certainly had our share of hoarders…

We’re talking about somebody who just can’t throw anything away,” said Scoones, who has researched the subject.

“They’ve filled up the house and they’re moving out into the yard.

That’s when the neighbours say ‘Hey, wait a minute.’ People who hoard, I think they don’t have the same concept of what this stuff means compared to you or I — they have a serious attachment to it.”

ISSUES

In the Fraser Health region, there are no services specifically targeting hoarders but treatment is offered to people who have been diagnosed with a mental illness, which could include hoarding behaviours.

That could leave a gap in services for less serious but problematic cases, agreed Denyse Houde, director for mental health and substance abuse services for Burnaby, New Westminster and the TriCities.

Mental health workers do join teams of municipal bylaw officers and fire fighters to help deal with hoarders and, if the person is diagnosed with a mental illness, the health authority can provide therapies or even hospitalization in situations covered by the Mental Health Act.

But that approach might not work for people whose condition prevents them from seeking help, who are isolated or whose hoarding issue isn’t so acute that it requires mental health intervention.

For now, people with hoarding issues and their families have to find ways to deal with the problem, mostly on their own. But Hoarders’ Helping Hands provides fee-based services depending on the need. The company owners are also interested in collaborating with those wishing to start a support group.

GVHBA invites public to Parade of Renovated Homes

Imagining the renovation possiblities The Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association invites you to tour 11 professionally renovated homes in the Lower Mainland on June 9 on their annual Parade of Renovated Homes.

Between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., visitors will be able to look around the homes and talk with the renovators.

Appia to release second phase soon

SOLO District rising above the rest with Altus

Exciting things are happening at Appia Developments’ SOLO District with their upcoming release of the second residential phase and ongoing construction of the first phase.

Stratus, the first tower, will rise 45 storeys and will be available for buyers to move into in 2015. Meanwhile, Altus will begin sales in the near future.

“Altus will be the tallest building in Burnaby,” says Lisa Murrell, sales and marketing manager for Appia. “The views are amazing.”

Altus will be the equivalent of 55 storeys tall, with office space on the first 14 floors. Thus, the first residential floor will be 200 feet up, offering stunning views from every condominium home.

“

There’s everything you could possibly need here,” says Lisa Murrell, sales and marketing manager for Appia Developments.

“The views start from the bottom (residential) floor,” Murrell says. “There will also be a quiet barbecue area and rooftop garden on that floor.”

At the very top of the building, you’ll find a huge amenity space that Appia is calling Club 55 with a barbecue area, full kitchen, media area and pool and ping-pong tables and generous outdoor deck space all for residents of Altus.

The office tower will include a gym that residents have access to as well, and a multi-sport court on the third floor.

SOLO District, which stands for South of Lougheed, will eventually be comprised of four stunning residential towers (Cirrus and Aerius are the two others and will be released at a future date) and when complete, will house over 1,400 homes. It will also hold office space, commercial opportunities and plenty of green space. Among the tenants will be Burnaby’s first Whole Foods, right next door to Stratus.

“There are several other exciting anchor tenants to be announced,” says Murrell. “This is a very, very cool community.”

That’s no exaggeration. SOLO is steps away from Brentwood Town Centre, the Brentwood SkyTrain

station, restaurants, schools and leisure activities, so it’s perfectly situated.

“There’s everything you could possibly need here,” Murrell says.

“Walkability was key.”

Stratus began sales last year, and Appia has since consulted with buyers and locals to find out what drew them to the master-planned community.

“It’s been really well-received by the community,” Murrell says. “We’re learning what people want.”

The homes themselves are spacious and open, ranging from approximately 539 up to about 1,700 square feet.

Something that sets Altus apart are the choices it offers for three-bedroom units, which is something buyers have been asking for and Appia is happy to be able to provide in this new phase of SOLO District.

eans are one of the really healthy veggies, containing vitamins A, B and C, calcium, phosphorous, iron, lots of fiber, and they have only 31 calories per cup.

Not only that but amino acids and folic acid are also released as we digest them, helping in the development of red blood cells, the nervous system and digestion.

You didn’t know they were this good for you, did you?

There are three types of beans: the snap types (the green and yellow varieties we all grow), green shelling beans (like broad beans) and the dry shell varieties (like the kidney types).

Most popular, of course, are the snap types, both bush and pole. This, however, has not always been the case. For centuries, snap beans (referring to the snapping sound they make when broken) were not that well liked because the seam along the pod was rather tough, hence the name ‘string’ bean.

We have to thank Calvin Keeny, a New Yorker whose breeding efforts resulted in the first really tasty and tender ‘stringless’ bean — Burpee’s Stringless Green Pod. Introduced in 1898, this bean helped Keeny become known as the Father of the Stringless Bean.

The tender green variety, which we still see on racks today, was introduced in 1925.

It wasn’t until 1962 that the fabulous Bush Blue Lake was developed. It is still one of the top varieties today and is both flavourful and tender.

Good pole beans arrived even earlier with the introduction of Kentucky Wonder in 1877 by the Ferry-Morse Seed Company. A cross between Kentucky Wonder and Blue Lake resulted in a 1991 All-American Selection, Kentucky Blue, one of the best pole varieties today.

Beans, by the way, are not hybrids. They are produced as open pollinated crops in northwestern United States. All beans are legumes, like peas, and fix nitrogen in the soil as they grow, making them an important nutrient crop.

eloved Coquitlam lacrosse legend Trevor Wingrove will be getting his due posthumously when the junior Adanacs’ organization retires his jersey on Wednesday.

Coquitlam Minor Lacrosse Association president James Abbott, along with members of the junior Adanacs’ executive, made

the call earlier this year — a natural progression after the annual minor lacrosse tournament became eponymous with Wingrove’s name two years ago.

Today, sitting in a café overlooking the A’s arena at the Coquitlam Sports Centre, Trevor’s dad Les is mentally preparing for that bittersweet moment on June 5 when number 23 will rise to the rafters.

“Trevor was a very modest guy and he would probably be embarrassed by all the attention,” smiles Les, fondly remembering a man whose enthusiasm for life had a wide reach in Coquitlam.

Considered as one of the founding fathers of Coquitlam minor lacrosse, Les is self-effacing — a trait he clearly passed down to his son, along with his passion for the sport.

By the mid-‘80s, Les was well into his tenure as coach of the junior A’s and Trevor had just earned his spot on the roster, after leaving behind a legacy that included seven gold provincial medals in minor lacrosse.

In 1985, Trevor was named the Adanacs’ Most Inspirational Player. Two years later, he was the team’s‘Most Valuable Player’. “[Trevor] was a sniper on the

power play,” recalls Hofseth. “He had one of the best shots in the league by far.”

But it was his son’s sportsmanlike conduct that made Trevor’s dad the most proud.

Looking back, Les remembers an anomaly: the one and only time Trevor sparred on the lacrosse floor. He had fought back after another player “went out of his way to give Trevor a hard time.”

The diagnosis came mere weeks later, cancer, with a month-to-month prognosis. Les says his son handled the card he was dealt no differently than anything else in his life — with a lot of strength and optimism.

Six months later, it was standing room only at the Red Robinson Show Theatre in

He’s now left with permanent reminders of his son’s love for lacrosse, not only in the trophy cases at the Coquitlam Sports Centre, but also in his carport.

When Trevor was a tyke lacrosse player, he routinely ensconced in his parents’ carport, where his dad had placed a piece of plywood for target practice.

Two years ago, when one of Trevor’s old teammates who lived down the street came over to paint the roof of Les’ carport — they discovered all these lacrosse ballsized marks.

“He said, ‘no problem,’” laughs Les, “‘I probably made half those marks’”.

On Wednesday, many of Trevor’s old teammates and coaches will be in attendance during his jersey retirement ceremony, scheduled to take place between the first and second periods.

His brother Craig, who also played lacrosse, will make the trip from his home in Connecticut.

Trevor remains as the junior A’s fourth all-time regular season points leader, recording 100 goals and 245 assists.

For Hofseth, he’s more amazed by just how much of a team leader Trevor was during that time.

“He was very inspirational to all the players,” says Hofseth. “He always led by example. He was well liked on and off the floor.”

Outside of lacrosse, Trevor was engaged in civic life in Coquitlam.

Coquitlam for Trevor’s memorial, where family, friends, his former lacrosse teammates and many others who Trevor touched with his generosity paid tribute to him.

“Everybody always heaps praises on Trevor,” says Les.

During that time, he also attended Whittier College in California where he won a Western Collegiate Lacrosse League Championship and was named to the first all-star team.

In 1988, his last season in juniors, Trevor was called up to the senior A’s team to play in the Mann Cup. It proved to be a momentous occasion, as the A’s made it to the Canadian lacrosse finals that year.

He would carry on with the senior Adanacs for five more seasons that included two more Mann Cup appearances, before his lacrosse career was cut short by a severed Achilles tendon injury.

A few years later, after graduating from Douglas College’s Print Futures program, Trevor was tasked with rewriting all the city manuals.

That opportunity offered some valuable insight, which helped him move up the ranks at city hall.

When the deputy city clerk job came open, Trevor went out and bought two suits for his interview, laughs Les. He got the job, but faced a dilemma shortly after when Maple Ridge posted a city clerk position. Trevor was eventually courted back by Coquitlam when that same role opened up in his hometown.

His last post was general manager of Corporate Services, that’s when adversity struck hard for 42-yearold Trevor in 2010.

“We had gone down to Palm Springs for my granddaughter’s field hockey tournament,” explains Les. “[Trevor] was coughing quite a bit.”

Douglas Charles Hayes On May 26, at age 67, Doug was welcomed into Heaven by his Savior, Jesus Christ, his parents, Charles and Eva Hayes and his precious granddaughter Rebecca Coukell. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 43 years, Sharon, his daughters Carolyn (Michael) Kaiser, and Kathryn (Gary) Coukell, and grandchildren Owen, Daniel, Samantha, Stephen, Justin and Elizabeth as well as his siblings Carol (Bob) Benson, Gerald (Gloria) Hayes, Dirwyn (Darlene) Hayes and Colleen (Karl) Skjaveland, and extended family. His entire career was with Mutual Group Financial Services with many years as a Branch Manager in the Lower Mainland area. Doug was an encourager, a man of prayer and wisdom, a lover of his family and a true friend. He was active in his church and community. He loved the outdoors. In 1997 a massive brain hemmorhage changed the life he had known. Even with visual, cognitive, and mental health challenges, this man of faith and gentleness continued to touch lives with encouragement and hope. His final months were shared with the beautiful staff and residents at Eagle Ridge Manor.

Reporting to the Director, Human Resources, you will be responsible for the administration of HRrelated documentation in coordination with payroll and other departments.
