“When I got there, I thought how happy I would be with all these kids to play with,” he said. “I didn’t know what kind of surprise I was in for.”

HREE WEEKS before he died, Don Seymour sat down in front of a video camera and told his story.

In those few minutes that he stared at the lens — stopping only once to regain his composure — the man who knew his days were limited told a tale of a life both destroyed and made strong again.

It was a story of a little boy and the Kamloops Indian Residential School.

Seymour was the third generation of his family sent to the red-brick building on Tk’emlups Indian Band land, three generations told by the federal government their culture, their beliefs, their language, even the colour of their skin, was wrong.

Seymour told of getting on a bus at 7

a.m. and being taken to the school, of how his life was one of “good and evil, where the priests were the evil.”

two days of hearings before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

MLA Lake says cabinet not a given

Political pundits may have Terry Lake on their lists of MLAs most likely to sit in Christy Clark’s new cabinet, but the Kamloops-North Thompson Liberal MLA is playing down the likelihood he will hold on to his environment ministry portfolio.

Clark will likely unveil her new cabinet in the next week and Lake said he thinks she will have a tough time deciding which MLAs to select.

“We have very strong people that have been elected as MLAs and, when you look at the resumes of many of these people — Michelle Stilwell, who’s a worldchampion Paralympian and a tremendous public speaker, you’ve got Sam Sullivan, former mayor of Vancouver, Suzanne Anton, former councillor — they’re really top-notch people all around the province,” Lake said.

“Todd Stone here is very accomplished. So, it’s going to be tough.”

In 2011, Clark named Lake minister of environment.

Before that, he had served as a parliamentary secretary for the minister of health services and the minister of agriculture.

Lake said the environment file has kept him in the provincial-media spotlight — it’s his ministry that is most involved with the proposed expansions of the Enbridge Northern Gateway and Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain oil pipelines — which likely explains the buzz about his return to cabinet.

“It’s natural to speculate that I’d be back in cabinet but, again, it is a really tough thing,” he said.

“And I think all of us are part of one team and I, above all else, am a team player. Still, it’s expected that someone who’s been there before and done an OK job is going to be in consideration again.”

Lake said he is passionate about the environment file and would love to stay on as environment minister, if that’s what Clark decides.

“But, whether I’m the minister or whatever role I have, I’m certainly going to be a huge supporter of the ministry anyway,” he said.

As for the rest of the cabinet, Lake expects it won’t change much in size from Clark’s previous structure, though he said the premier may create a separate cabinet post to deal with the natural-gas sector.

Seymour never told his mom, Loretta, or his dad, Dan, of being punched by the priests, of being thrown out into the snow in the middle of winter, of having his hand strapped or of being taken into a room with his best friend and told to pray while his buddy was sexually assaulted.

Then, the boys had to switch places.

“For a long time, those four years were a blank,” Seymour said. “I didn’t want to remember those days.

“It’s tough to tell my story, but it needs to be told. . . . To this day, I remember the smell, the sounds of that whole experience.”

The memories come alive every time TIB counsellor Jeanette Jules steps into the gymnasium on the band’s land.

girls’ dormitory when the security guard would come in, his flashlight shining into the faces of the youngsters.

“I’d hear whimpering,” she said, “because we were all wondering who he was going to choose, who he was going to take.”

She told of being praised by someone later in life for her perfectly enunciated English and of her explanation that she had to learn it because, if she didn’t, a nun would

smack her mouth with a black piece of wood.

She told Sinclair how she disagrees with other First Nations bands that are razing former residential schools, ridding their land of the place that symbolizes the evil that happened there.

“If we tear down all of these buildings,” Jules said, “we are giving in to the government. It would be like it didn’t exist, it didn’t happen.”

On his first day, he ran to other kids and started to talk in his native language, only to be pulled out of the group and punished.

That’s when he learned he was not to speak his language ever again.

Seymour ended his video by saying how, despite everything he was put through — the abuse, the discipline, the constant praying — he learned one lesson that became key to his life.

“We stood up for our rights,” he said. “They were trying to take the heart out of us, but I never gave up.”

City loses in bid to revamp airport deal

Kamloops business owners can rest a little easier knowing the downtown streets are being watched by the students in red.

The Customer Care and Patrol (CAP) team is once again patrolling Kamloops’ downtown area, ensuring that city residents are safe, businesses are undisturbed and tourists are on track.

“They are the eyes and ears for the RCMP in the downtown area during the summer months,” Kamloops RCMP Const. George Buttuls said.

“They have the noticeable red shirts and they are ambassadors for the city.”

This only the second year since its inception in 2005 that the group has consisted of entirely new recruits.

The eight new members took a one-day course, taught by the local RCMP, to prepare for their summer job.

The course included obser-

vational skills, knowing when and when not to get involved in a situation and what to get involved in and how to report such incidents to the RCMP. “They are a tremendous asset for the city,” Buttuls said.

“Police cannot be everywhere at once.”

Gay Pooler, general manger of the Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association, said the program’s success is measured by a number of factors, including statistics and feedback from tourists and business owners.

Last year, close to 3,000 tourists were helped on the street and at the CAP team’s kiosk,

while 11 arrests were made as a result of CAP intervention.

So far this year, team members have contacted the RCMP 10 times, have found nine needles and have assisted more than 50 tourists — and they are just three weeks into their monthslong job.

The group has already walked about 752 kilometres as a unit.

Janet Holland, manager of Lavender Lingerie, has noticed a big difference in the downtown area since the CAP team was introduced.

“If I have any problem, I just pick up the phone and they are here immediately at the store,” Holland said.

In many cases, Holland will call the CAP team before the police, noting that as the summer progresses, team members

begin to know the street people and how to deal with them.

Team members often help them out and offer food when needed.

“They are very diplomatic,” Holland said. “They are not police officers, but they can handle very severe situations in a very calm way.”

Each of the members chosen is a Thompson Rivers University student who was active in their community before applying to the CAP team.

All plan on pursuing a career in which the CAP experience will be an asset.

Erin Miller, CAP tourism ambassador, said she wanted to join after her sister served on the squad in 2010 and 2011.

The program has evolved throughout the years, but has always had the goal of making Kamloops a better place.

“I feel safer with them here,” Holland said.

“And they add so much to the downtown core.”

COMMUNITY

Despite a trip to arbitration, the City of Kamloops won’t be getting any extra cash from its airport-management company.

The city announced this week that an arbitrator has ruled the lease agreement between Kamloops Airport Limited and the Kamloops Airport Authority Society will remain basically unchanged.

Mayor Peter Milobar said the society had hoped to get more revenue from airport operations.

Under the agreeement, the airport-management company, Kamloops Airport Limited, keeps half of net income from the airport, while the city’s half of the cash goes into a capital-reserve fund earmarked for airport improvements.

“It’s essentially the same agreement we currently have, the same rate structure more or less,” Milobar said of the arbitration decision, which covered the years between 2007 and 2012.

“It’s not the result we hoped for,” Milobar said.

“But, at the same time, we still have an airport that’s run by a well-run airport-management company.”

The city’s 45-year deal with Kamloops Airport Limited, signed in 1997, allows for a review every five years.

That means the airport society could review the deal again this year, though Milobar doubts that will happen.

“I can’t imagine there’s a lot of appetite to go right into another rent review,” he said.

“We haven’t really discussed it as a society yet, but I’d be surprised if we wanted to go down that road right now.”

A close SPCA Challenge The annual SPCA Challenge ends tomorrow (May 31) and Kamloops and Prince George are neck-and-neck as the final day approaches.

As of Wednesday, May 29, the Prince George branch of the BC SPCA had raised $35,000 in May, while its Kamloops counterpart had taken in $33,000.

Kamloops’ month-long goal is $40,000.

Diana BeresfordKroeger planted peppers this week.

She has parcelled out eight acres of her 160acre home in the heart of Ontario, a plot of land where she grows food she will later can or freeze for meals.

Lots of meals.

But, this is more than a story about a woman who lives off the land.

It’s a story of a botanist who has spent her life studying how the simple act of planting the right seeds and nurturing them into life can do more for a person’s health than many costly medicines.

She’ll bring that story — and a particular chapter about her search for a rare tree — to Kamloops this week when she gives the keynote address at the 49th annual meeting and conference of the Canadian Botanical Association at Thompson Rivers University from June 1 to June 5.

Beresford-Kroeger said the new generation of young people is starting to realize their immune systems are being “seriously compromised by what they eat and they’re speaking out on it.”

They’re protesting the proliferation of genetically modified foods, for example, and, in doing so, providing “a wake up call to parents to sit up and take notice.”

They’re reading about a recent study that links a particular compound in cigarettes to a fundamental genetic mutation that will show up in the smoker’s children or grandchildren.

“That’s the epic genetic journey these

kids are on,” she said.

“They will make the change. It won’t be the corporations.”

Beresford-Kroeger said her love of plants and their roles in life comes from her heritage.

Orphaned at age 11 in her native Ireland, she went to live with relatives in their 80s and 90s who shared their Celtic beliefs in the healing power of plants.

She’ll tell the botanists at the conference about a helicopter ride in Texas, one that had her tethered into the

craft by a leather brace, hanging out with her binoculars at her eyes, looking for a tree she has spent two decades searching for.

She saw water on the tree’s seeds glistening, had the copter land, ran out and hugged the tree — then got to work gathering seeds, planning with the owner of the land, doing everything she needed to do to ensure this rare specimen continues.

It’s a funny story, as well, she said, particularly when she tells of the role gortex pants

plays in it.

From Kamloops, Beresford-Kroeger is heading through the Pacific Rim and the west coast of the U.S., shooting scenes for a film she’s making based on her book The Global Forest.

It’s a message about climate change, she said, and how simple, inexpensive changes in people’s lives can make a difference in Earth’s climate.

“The Dalai Lama once said the only way into the future is to simplify our lives,” Beresford-Kroeger said.

“We just have to be smart.

“I’m going on that journey.”

PLANES, BUSES AND AUTOMOBILES While half of Kamloops’ city councillors are headed to this year’s Federation of Canadian Municipalities conference in Vancouver via air, councillors Arjun Singh and Donovan Cavers are headed for the bus depot.

“I’m taking the Greyhound, probably the red-eye,” said Cavers, who has a catering commitment for Bike to Work Week to finish up before he can leave.

A fitness-related commitment is keeping Nelly Dever off the bus and on a plane for the conference, which runs from May 31 to June 3 in Vancouver.

Dever will be emceeing the city’s National Health and Fitness Day event on June 1 at the Tournament Capital Centre, starting at 9 a.m.

But, she said, she and Cavers plan to challenge the rest of council to bus to a conference as a team-building activity.

“We need to have at least 75 per cent of council,” she said.

“It can’t just be two or three.”

Of the other five councillors attending the FCM, Ken Christian and Marg Spina plan to drive, while the rest will hit the skies.

It doesn’t boast the sort of one-onone meetings with ministers and highprofile resolutions on legalizing marijuana that made headlines at the last meeting of the Union of B.C. Municipalities.

But, local politicians say it’s important to lend their support and numbers to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities conference, which takes place this weekend in Vancouver.

All but one Kamloops city councillor — Tina Lange — will be attending the conference, though a few will be going on behalf of the Thompson Nicola Regional District, rather than on behalf of the city.

Christian said he volunteered to be a TNRD board delegate because the annual conference is closer to Kamloops than usual this year.

Last year, the FCM conference was held in Saskatoon.

In 2011, the conference was held in Halifax.

Christian expects federal infrastructure funding to be the key issue of the conference, but said he is also looking forward to hearing from federal opposition leaders Justin Trudeau (Liberal), Thomas Mulcair (New Democrat) and Elizabeth May (Green), all of whom are scheduled to attend.

ing to continue sitting on three FCM committees dealing with environmental issues, social-economic development and women’s participation in local politics.

Bepple also pegged federal infrastructure funding as a key issue for FCM. “We have a deal with the federal government, but I know FCM doesn’t think it’s

sufficient to fill the gap,” Bepple said.

“So, we’ll look at what’s our strategy going forward.”

The federal government has committed $14 billion over 10 years to roads, sewers and other infrastructure projects.

The program replaces previous funding that was set to expire in 2014.

Mayor Peter Milobar said he sees his presence at the annual convention as being mainly a show of strength.

“To have a conference where 200 people show up and try to say to the federal government, ‘This is our national conference and we’re really serious, take us seriously.’

“How serious would they take us?” he said.

Not really Byrning to hear more from this email friend

I

RECEIVED AN EMAIL THIS week from Jenni Byrne.

Don’t know her and, from the contents of the email, it’s pretty obvious she doesn’t know me.

Apparently, Byrne was a national campaign manager in 2011 for the Conservative Party of Canada — at least, that’s how she signed the email.

I used Google to find out more and learned a lot of things about her.

Byrne was born in 1977, joined the Reform party when she was 16, went to Georgian College and the University of Ottawa and is a lifelong political person who leans toward the right side of that spectrum.

Globe and Mail columnist Jane Taber described her one as someone with “a reputation where most people are terrified of being on the wrong side of her.”

I could go on, but you can tell from my search that it was pretty easy to learn a lot about her.

I wish Byrne had done the same thing with me as she might not have sent the email asking me to sign a petition she backs, one that involves a subject that truly polarizes people in this country.

In fact, she might remove me from her list altogether.

Here’s the body of the email: “You probably remember the story of Vince Li — a man who, five years ago, beheaded and cannibalized a fellow passenger on a Greyhound bus. He was found to be not criminally responsible for his actions — and was even granted escorted leave from prison.

“This is an insult to his victim — and this is not what Canadians expect

“That’s why we introduced the Not Criminally Responsible Reform Act — which will protect the public from high-risk offenders and put victims first when decisions are made about people found not criminally responsible.

“Yesterday, the legislation passed second reading — but, incredibly, the Liberals have decided to oppose our bill.

“Justin Trudeau’s willingness to put the interests of dangerous, high-risk individuals ahead of public safety is yet more evidence that he is in over his head. The Conservatives are working hard to keep our streets and communities safe — and standing up for victims.

“Will you stand with us? Add your name here.”

If Byrne had Googled me, she might have discovered that, having lived with a mental illness, I tend to react in a specific way when someone turns a sick person into the depths of pure evil.

It’s hard to know where to begin here, but let’s just start with this simple truth many people don’t want to hear.

Li is not a hardened criminal who spends his time killing people.

He is a sick person who had a psy-

chotic break and needed treatment to deal with it.

That is not an excuse to keep him locked up for life and it betrays the underlying belief of justice — that people can be rehabilitated. And it also shows a mistrust in the medical system treating Li to determine when he is well enough to rejoin society.

But, that’s not the point of this email Byrne sent out. It really has nothing to do with Li or the legislation she knows will be passed by Parliament. It’s another swipe at Trudeau.

Byrne’s been busy doing that.

In April, right after the anti-Trudeau ad campaign began, she dumped on the media for criticizing it. The truth, she said in another email, is that the ads had received so many hits on YouTube that it crashed the server, proof to Byrne the campaign response “has been overwhelming.”

I watched those videos, too, but not for the reason Byrne suggests.

I wanted to see how low her party had really sunk.

When Trudeau announced his leadership bid, I was skeptical. Didn’t see the political smarts there. That ad campaign, deriding Trudeau for being a camp counsellor (I was one once) and, horror of horrors, a drama teacher (my kid’s a theatre major) made me start to identify with the young man.

Now, thanks to Byrne, I know he’s not so sure about keeping sick people in prison longer than they need to be.

At least twice each year in B.C., there is a real push from police against drinking and driving — once at Christmas and again in the spring.

At Christmas, age is not a consideration for police. In the spring, the target group is clear.

Drinking drivers tend to be younger in spring around graduation time. They are, frequently, young men experiencing what some would call the rites of passage.

Drinking and driving, however, isn’t a rite.

It’s a crime — one with deadly consequences.

More than two years ago, the province introduced Canada’s toughest impaired-driving laws and the number of alcohol-related motor vehicle deaths decreased by half.

With any luck, the days of parent-sanctioned “wet” grad parties are a thing of the past.

With more parents and students concentrating on dry-grad activities that have youth celebrating in a safe, non-alcohol-fuelled atmosphere, one would hope the old hay-field parties of yore have been left in the past.

But some parents still believe in the old adage, “Kids are going to drink anyway, so we’ll just make sure they don’t drive.”

That is a difficult stance to take when, as a parent, they have spent the last 18 years of their child’s life trying to teach them right from wrong.

Then they tell them wrong is OK, as long as mom or dad says so.

It’s a parent’s job to make the tough decisions — even if they are not the most popular ones with their kids.

All their lives, parents have made decisions for their children based on what they think is best for them.

It may not be the easiest thing they’ve done lately, but convincing a teen that drinking alcohol to celebrate is not a necessity and could bring them harm in ways other than the risk of driving drunk will make everyone feel better in the morning.

Editor: Re: (‘RC flyers grounded by city,’ May 23): Why am I not surprised? Someone is having fun?

“Oh, no,” says the city. “You can’t do that. You can’t have fun here.”

Perhaps this is a simple case of a jealous reaction from an immature individual who is acting like a spoiled brat child and runs to mommy because Johnny has an ice cream cone bigger than theirs.

History is repeating itself once again. As soon as anyone is having fun within eyesight or earshot of others, someone calls in a complaint.

Then the immediate reaction from the offices of the lily-livered powers-that-be, in trying to pacify the complainer, is to take the route of least resistance — and the fun is shut down.

Considering this is from the offices of a city that promotes tournaments, something appears inconsistent here.

Instead of shutting down model-airplane flights at McArthur Island, the people in charge should welcome the activity and work together with both sides, with the goal of officially welcoming RC flyers to Kamloops.

Kamloops could easily become a centre of RC-flyer tournaments.

Westsyde walk for PKU awareness Westsyde’s Centennial Park will be the Kamloops location this weekend for the first national CanPKU Walkathon.

Proceeds from the walk will go to CanPKU, a non-profit association that provides support and education to PKU patients and families across

Canada and lobbies the various provincial governments for better access to care and treatment options.

Among those taking part on Saturday, June 1, at 1 p.m. are Amanda Cosburn and her family.

Cosburn has phenylketonuria, or PKU, a rare condition that

is screened for at birth and puts patients at risk for cognitive impairment if left untreated.

Y Healthy Kids Day hits street this weekend

The annual YMCAYWCA Healthy Kids Day will take place this weekend inside and outside the downtown Y. A section of Battle Street will be closing at 7 a.m. on Sunday, June 2, in preparation for a four-hour celebration — from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

— that aims to educate children and their families through fun and interactive games.

The downtown Kamloops Y is hosting a day packed full of fun for all ages and all Kamloops families are invited.

There will be plenty of games and activities taking place and prizes to be won, said Monica

Vandermeulen, the Y’s co-ordinator of family services.

“Families can even win a free family membership just by coming,” she said.

The free event will promote healthy active living for children through various activities and booths.

The Y’s residential camp leaders will be on site, co-ordinating a number of games and answering any questions parents may have about the program. Those interested in signing up their children for camp will be able to do so.

The Kamloops Storm junior B hockey team will be hosting an exciting game of street hockey that will run throughout the day.

All hockey lovers are

invited to join in.

Kamloops Fire Rescue will also be taking part, teaching children about fire safety through the department’s new inflatable Fire Safety House.

“It has all kinds of informative fire safety tips,” Vandermeulen said. “It is an interactive experience. They can go through it like a house, but it has slides and it is on a bouncy surface.”

Starting New At Golf will give kids a taste of the sport free of charge, with child-sized golf equipment and Velcro balls added for the young ones.

Other activities that will be taking place throughout the day include a pool party, a climbing wall, face painting and so

much more.

The Y has switched up the event’s information booths this year in an attempt to broaden the education it provides.

Families will find out about the importance of psychical activity, emotional health, self esteem and nutrition through a number of games and activities.

Children will learn through play, while parents will receive some useful and important information for children of all ages.

Interior Savings Credit Union is helping to fund the event, along with various other sponsors, allowing everything to be provided free of charge.

While some light snacks will be available, families are invited to

bring along lunches as there will be areas made available for a picnic.

The event ends at 2 p.m.; however, Battle Street between Fourth

and Fifth avenues is expected to remain closed until 2:30 p.m.

Swish! AA group got the ball rolling Fifteen years ago, the KamloopsThompson school board took a leap of faith — and the end result was years of a success with the B.C. High School AA Basketball Championships.

With the boys’ and girls’ provincial tourneys now moving to Langley, some of the people who have given hundreds of hours to ensure the event was a success in Kamloops have been honoured by the KamloopsThompson school district.

During a ceremony this week before the board of education, Jack Buckham was the first to accept a plaque from board chairwoman Denise Harper.

Registration closes today (May 30) for a workshop on what Kamloopsians can do to make the city more welcoming to immigrants.

The event is part of the provincial Welcoming Communities Program and is being organized by a group of local social agencies, led by the Kamloops Immigrant Society (KIS).

Co-ordinator Allysa Gredling said the event on Wednesday, June 5, will start at 10 a.m. with a panel discussion on what is working well and what can be used as a template for future successes.

After that, participants will break into groups to discuss specifics in more detail.

The information will be gathered and used to fine-tune a series of workshops the KIS plans to give in the fall and winter.

The June 5 event at the Parkside Lounge in Interior Savings Centre runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

RIH wing to soar again

The very visible Riverpole at the intersection of Columbia Street and Summit Drive is getting spruced up as city crews resurface the artwork created by Kamloops artist Vaughn Warren. The 6.1-metre-tall art piece was carved as a fundraiser for a medical mission in Peru. It was completed in 2002 after 600 hours of labour to create the carving out of red cedar. A wing of the fourth floor at Royal Inland Hospital may soon be open to patients.

The north wing has been used for storing medical devices temporarily but, with work continuing on the entire sterilization section for that equipment, the spot won’t be needed much longer.

Using the area for patient care will help increase capacity, said Marg Brown, RIH’s health-services administrator.

Other methods to boost available space for patients include improving all the steps from admitting a patient through treatment to discharge — what hospital staff refers to as access and flow — and communication between all health-care professionals dealing with a person who has become a patient to ensure the flow moves along efficiently.

An example of that step could be something as simple as contacting the residential-care unit that will be receiving an elderly patient to ensure it is ready to actually do so.

The Interior Health Authority has also issued its request for proposals to expand surgical services to create another operating room.

NE situation we are frequently asked about is the awkwardness some people feel when a close friend or relative discloses they have been diagnosed with a mental illness.

People tell us they have no idea what to say — and what not to say.

It makes a difference and it can have a profound impact on others — powerfully good or completely deflating.

If you feel you are not well-equipped to handle a situation like this, you can either take heart or be terribly disappointed to hear that trained medical staff, for the most part, also do not handle these situations very well.

person who has finally mustered up the courage to confide in you.

To them, they risk a great deal, including your respect, trust and the closeness you share.

They are extremely vulnerable and possibly not at their best when they venture out with a disclosure so personal and potentially harmful to them.

We will start with what not to say or do: “Just change your attitude about it.”

Some people feel overwhelmed, some exhausted and others feel wounded when they are first diagnosed.

Give people a chance to just let it all sink in before you

start pushing them to feel a certain way about it.

Sorting out a complex reaction to a difficult situation is not handled well when handled quickly or callously.

“Just pray about it.”

Mental illness has the same cure rate by prayer as other illnesses — let’s just say it is rare.

Sometimes having a religious perspective helps and sometimes it seems to work against the person.

The key is your religious viewpoints are irrelevant to your friend’s illness, so keep them to yourself.

Ruth Suzanne Hayward (Rowe) Ruth Suzanne Hayward (Rowe) passed away surrounded by her loving family at Berwick on the Park on May 27th, 2013.

Born in Kamloops March 20th 1917, Ruth loved this town and was happy to call the hills of Kamloops home. Ruth was predeceased by her parents, John and Mary Rowe, daughter Elizabeth, brother Leonard and sister-inlaw Amelia Rowe. Her husband of 60 years, Lloyd Hayward passed away in March 2002.

The Hayward family owned the largest sheep ranch in Canada, from the 1930’s - 1965. Many in the area will remember her gracious hospitality when they ventured to their Westsyde ranch to enjoy the annual spring “lambing time”.

We miss you so much, your stories, your laughter, your caring gentle ways, and yet they are with us every day.

Loving memories last forever.

Ruth was admired for her grace, her empathy and her ability to see the bright side of life. She was active in many local organizations which she enjoyed for the good of her home town, Kamloops.

Ruth will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Dianne (Roly), son Bob, twin grandsons Mark (Becky) & Mike (Kate), great grandchildren Hudson, Zachary & Macy Ruth Duhaime and her sister Phyllis Davies.

Memorial service will be held in the Schoening Funeral Chapel on Saturday, June 1st, 2013 at 11a.m.

Depending on the illness and the prognosis, some people have more control over the outcome than others.

Acceptance and discovering what works for each person is a helpful way to proceed.

“Why don’t you just snap out of it?

Everyone feels this way sometimes.”

Unless you are inside someone else’s skin, it would be hard for you to assess and believe that “everyone” feels that way sometimes.

Arthritis might be exactly the same disease in a group of people diagnosed with it, but each will experience, manage

and cope with it differently — better or worse by some than others.

“Just go to work and forget about it.”

Mental illness is the No. 1 reason for long-term disability from work.

Certainly work is one of the places we get our identity, and people who are no longer working because of their illness wish they were.

Would we tell someone who lost a limb to just forget about it?

“If you want to get better, you will.”

“My (brother/ uncle/neighbour/coworker) had the same thing and he . . .”

This story never ends well.

There are usually tragic or painful endings to these stories — or fantasies bordering on fairy tales.

Dowhaniuk, Edward Tony March 7, 1920 – May 26, 2013 It is with sadness and sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of our Father Edward on May 26, 2013 at the age of 93. His family was by his side.

Ed was predeceased by his wife Rose in 2003, parents Maria and Wasyil, sisters Emelia, Lena, Rose, Pauline, Eva and brothers Paul, Michael and Joseph. He is survived by his daughters Andrea Golberg, Debra Golabek (Vince), sons Brian and Terry, grandchildren Jennifer Golberg (Peter MacAdam), Tanis Fleming (James), great grandchildren Finnegan, Ocean, Ethan, Isabel, his only surviving sibling Sophie Smith, niece Gladys Olson, nephew Robert Leonard and numerous friends and relatives.

Ed was born on a homestead in Flat Lake Alberta, the 7th of ten brothers and sisters. During World War II, Ed served with the Canadian Armed Forces stationed in the United Kingdom. At the end of the War, he made his way to Kamloops and began his career as a Fireman with the Canadian National Railway.

He was promoted to Locomotive Engineer and saw the transition from the steam to the diesel era. After 36 years of service he retired in 1982. Ed enjoyed his job, seeing Nature’s ever-changing landscape roll by on every tour.

Be helpful, not a crutch.

Sympathize with their struggles and issues — if they have them — but true support does not try to smooth over or just take over those struggles for them.

The Merry Lark The merry, merry lark was up and singing; and the hare was out and feeding on the lea, And the merry, merry bells below were ringing, When my child’s laugh rang through me.

Shortly after his arrival in Kamloops, Ed met Rosina Corea and they married on October 29, 1952. They built their home on the corner of 13th and Columbia Street where they raised their family.

Ed had a number of passions in his life. He spent many hours nurturing his large garden and took great pride in providing his family with season after season of fresh vegetables. Ed’s many carpentry projects around the home displayed real ingenuity. He enjoyed listening to big band music and was an avid boxing and soccer fan. Golf also gave him great pleasure. At the age of 40, he discovered his real passion which was downhill skiing. On the ski hill, he was known as “Fast Eddy” by all and was a member of the “Italian Ski Team”. His outgoing and friendly manner fostered many friendships on the mountain.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dad’s initial caregivers, Bonnie Tindall and Shirley Redden, and to the Kamloops Seniors Village staff for their kind and attentive care over the past 6 years.

The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to Berwick on the Park for their care and support over the years.

Prayers will be recited at Sacred Heart Cathedral on Monday, June 3rd at 7:00 pm. Father Paul Simms will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial at Sacred Heart Cathedral on Tuesday, June 4th at 11:00 am.

Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery.

Lions back in town — maybe for good

It’s not your average rodeo — it’s the toughest sport on Earth.

For one night only — on Saturday, June 1 — some of the best bullriders and rankest bulls in the world will convene at the Merritt Rodeo Grounds for the inaugural Smithbilt Ty Pozzobon PBR Invitational.

It promises to be one of the most exciting sporting events ever to touch down in the Nicola Valley.

“Merritt has been a great supporter of me and my career,” said Pozzobon who, at 21, is ranked 12th on the planet and is a rising star on the Built Ford Tough

bullriding circuit.

“To bring an event of this calibre to my hometown is a real thrill.”

A former B.C. High School Rodeo champion, three-time Calgary Stampede competitor, Canadian Professional Rodeo Association Rookie of the Year in 2010, and 2012 PBR Canadian Finals champion before graduating to the premiere Built Ford Tough Series, Pozzobon knows what he’s talking about.

“Not only is professional bull riding a tremendously exciting sporting event and entertainment spectacle, but holding an event in Merritt on June 1 will be a great way to kick off the summer,” he said.

Invitational, which will begin at 6 p.m. at the Merritt Rodeo Grounds in Collettville, will feature 25 of the top bull riders from across North America and the world, as well as some of the most feared and ferocious bulls from around the continent.

Each bull rider will compete once in a long-go, with the top 10 point-scorers moving on to a championship round immediately afterward.

A $12,500 purse will be up for grabs, as well as valuable qualifying points towards the PBR World Finals in Las Vegas in October.

The B.C. Lions arrive in Kamloops today (May 30) to begin their 2013 training camp — and the City of Kamloops is working on making the Tournament Capital the permanent training-camp home of the Canadian Football League team.

The Lions extended their agreement with the city to hold training camp at the Tournament Capital Centre and Thompson Rivers University, a deal that concludes in 2014.

“We’ve had communications with the team about maybe having a permanent training camp based in Kamloops,” said Jeff Putnam, the city’s manager of parks and recreation facilities.

Putnam said the idea would be to have the Lions hold training camp in Kamloops and stage events in other B.C. communities during the threeweek camp in June.

The club has held training camp in Kamloops since 2010. Prior to that, the Lions held camp in Chilliwack and Abbotsford.

And there is competition to be camp host.

Putnam said representatives from Nanaimo will be at Hillside Stadium next week to scout how Kamloops has organized the annual visit by the Lions.

“Our benefit is having all the

facilities together,” Putnam said of the Tournament Capital Centre layout.

“Someone’s going to have to inject about $200 million to replicate what we have here.”

Meanwhile, Putnam said the city and the squad have teamed up to market Kamloops to Lower Mainland residents, with the Lions set to air the city’s new promotional video on the big screen at BC Place Stadium during games.

The virtues of the Tournament Capital will be displayed on the second-largest stadium screen in the world and will be seen by hundreds of thousands of fans during the season.

EXTRA POINT Training camp begins today with the rookies arriving for a three-day session. The full squad will arrive on Sunday, June 2, though starting quarterback Travis Lulay and the five who would be his backup arrive today to get a jump on the playbook . . .

Heat women in action this weekend The Kamloops Heat are hosting a pair of Pacific Coast Soccer League Premier Division games this weekend.

Kamloops is hosting TSS Academy on Saturday, June 1, with kickoff slated for 3 p.m. on McArthur Island Field 2.

On Sunday, June 2, the Heat square off with Coquitlam Metro-Ford SC on Singh Bowl Field 2. That game gets underway at 1 p.m.

I have always thought the film and television media as

one of the best forms of communication.

And, what is an artist if not a communicator?

As an artist, I paint out my thoughts and emotions through my own visual lens with the

hope of communicating and sharing with others my interpretation of the world around me.

Filmmakers do this, too — but it’s my opinion they do it even better, as they can reach a bigger audience.

Turning locks into works of art The Kamloops Art Council Art Workshops are gearing up to teach Kamloops mothers and daughters how to turn their hair into art.

Hair wraps are a fun and easy form of wearable art and a nice, fashionable, alternative to bows and braids.

Mothers and daughters can take time to bond while learning to make the eye-catching, colourful hair accessories.

The workshop

will be taught by Una Connor, a local artist who works in multimediums.

Connor is known for her skill in various forms of art including custom-designed jewelry, paintings, drawings, sculptures and creative writing, among others.

She has taught arts workshops of all kinds for children, youth and adults.

The workshop will run from 9 a.m. to

noon on Saturday, June 1, with all required materials being supplied to participants.

Those who wish to attend can register in a number of ways.

Kamloops filmmaker Igor Kostin, the owner of True Image, believes it is his roll as a filmmaker to share his creative view of how he sees the world with people everywhere. “I believe that art is in everything, everywhere and every aspect of life. Life is art. It’s in a baby’s cry, the laughter from a toddler, the movement of our hands, the breath of our lungs, in the whisper of the wind,� Kostin said. “It is in everything we touch, every person we interact with. “Art is life. There are some of us who want to express ourselves with art, whether it be through music, poetry, writing, painting, photography or videography. “I believe I’m one of the few left who exposes my inner self and emotions through the lens of a camera.�

Kostin got his start in television 12 years ago working as a director for a local TV station in Grodno, Belarus.

Seeking a better life, he immigrated to Canada eight years ago and has settled in Kamloops with his young family.

Kostin uses his creative talents in creating high-quality commercials and documentaries, as well as corporate, wedding and music videos. “When working with a client, you follow the client’s wishes,� he said. “You are creating a moving message for them. “When it’s your own message, it all starts off

Kostin said the creative process starts with pre-production and script writing.

Production is the actual filming with the camera and, as a filmmaker, it is Kostin’s job to make sure every shot reflects the proper emotion. “The next step, post-production, is really important,� Kostin said. “It reminds me of painting; you’ve got the canvas ready, you’ve mixed the colours that you are going to use and you just start painting. “You are combining what you have filmed and music, what colourcorrection you want, black-white or overexposed, the right filter

to apply — everything necessary to polish off the final product.�

Like any good artist, Kostin takes great pride in his work.

He spends long hours in the editing room creating that perfect finished product. “To have what is birthed in my brain shown through the lens and to the audience is unexplainable,� Kostin said. “But, I would also have to say the most rewarding part is realizing the effect you’ve had or brought to your client or audience.

Free money for music vids Want to get paid to create your own music video and have it played on national television?

Public Records is offering grants of up to $5,000 to filmmakers and musicians in Kamloops and the surrounding area.

This money will allow filmmakers and musicians to produce their own music videos which will then be showcased on Telus Optik TV across Canada.

The Summer 2013 Music Video Fund will also include a Telus-funded production-education component that teaches artists the craft of music-video production.

As an additional bonus to sweeten the deal, the artists get to keep full rights to their video.

The opportuinity is part of an initiative to have Canadian artists help other Canadian artists. “We want to support and give exposure to emerging Canadian musicians and filmmakers,� said Tony Yacowar, Public Records co-founder. “Through these grants we hope to find and champion undiscovered talent in B.C. and Alberta. “Who knows, maybe one of these artists will go on to superstardom one day. “Regardless, it will help fuel the creation of independent Canadian content.�

The program is designed to do much more than give bands the funds and resources to gain some momentary exposure on a national level. “Public Records is more than just a grant program,� said Blair Miller, vice-president of content solutions for Telus. “It is also an educational experience that will teach emerging artists about the mechanics of making a video.

“Each week an interactive explanatory video will be released pertaining to a certain aspect of video production. “From audio check for filming, to creative layout and editing, artists across B.C. and Alberta will be given the means and the tools to learn what it takes to make a great video.�

In order to be eligible for a grant, participants must be musicians, either an artist or in a band, or filmmakers, individual or a crew.

Kamloops is one of a number of communities from which emerging artists and filmmakers are eligible to enter.

Interested candidates can register by going online to publicrecords.org.

Official grant submissions take place between May 31 and June 14.

T MUST HAVE BEGUN WITH MY NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION TO EAT MORE VEGETABLES. Ordinarily, I do not resolve.

Rather, I allow a dim awareness to turn into an unofficial acknowledgement until I hit some kind of rock bottom, leaving no choice other than to make new choices.

It’s my personal paradigm.

And, if I could have, I would have stuck with it.

I was at my fifth or so of about a dozen physiotherapy appointments to treat a slipped disk and a slamming together of local joinery when my therapist started a sentence with, “At your age . . . ” And I’m afraid that, for at least the rest of the appointment, that’s all I heard.

“At your age, you can no longer take your body for granted,” is what I think she was saying.

“At your age, you must use it or lose it or your mortal coil will find new ways to slough you off.”

The next thing I knew was, not only had I been set on a lifelong track to manage lower back pain with lifestyle changes that would include Pilates, but I was drinking a greenish-greyish sludge of a health smoothie, even though no one had specifically made me.

It came as a two-pack.

Two one-litre bottles of sludgy green that, despite the

colour and glop of their contents — and their general resemblance to churned-up mill weed — had managed to woo me with obfuscating labelling and clever branding.

But, it wasn’t just those things that made me reach for the juice in the store.

I’d already tried another brand of bottled green, which had tasted of the plums and other good things pictured on the heatshrunk label.

How different, I thought to myself, could one extreme green be from the other?

And, truly, after the first sip, there seemed to be little to distinguish one juice from the other.

Mill-weed green? Check.

A little slimy? Check.

Tastes of plums and sundries?

Check.

And then, there it was — an aftertaste not present in the first brand, which I’d bought in an easy-to-swallow 355-millilitre container.

Now, facing two litres, I resolved to waste not.

“How bad was it, really?” I thought.

After all, weeks on prescription narcotics had forced me into a relationship with Orange Tang-flavoured Metamucil (also purchased in a bulky two-pack) and I’d survived that.

But, let’s get back to the aftertaste.

At first it was hard to tell.

“Here, you try it,” I said to

Chefhusband, who sipped, then made a face.

Now, my palate is nowhere near as refined as his.

But, the fact that he’d made the same face as me meant there was something other than apple juice, banana puree, passion fruit puree, plum puree and lemon juice in my glass.

“Hmm,” I muttered, peering under my prescription lenses to read more small print.

“I’d say it’s either the spirulina powder, the chlorella powder, the alfalfa powder, the kelp powder, the spinach powder, the stinging nettle powder or the dulse powder.

“What do you think?”

I settled on nettles, but figured it was really probably the combination of so much powdered greenery having joined together to produce a weedy aftertaste that, before squinting, I would have sworn was actually the fault of a bushel of juiced kale.

“We have a juicer, you know,” Chefhusband said as I glugged again the next day.

“We can make you all the smoothies you want — no nettles required.”

I put down my glass and smiled sheepishly.

“OK,” I said.

“But, berries this time.

Nothing green.

“And, wait until I’ve finished this stuff.

X-tremely Red Berry Smoothie (Makes about 2.5 litres) 4 medium carrots, peeled 4 apples, cored 2 kiwi fruits, peeled 2 bananas, peeled 12 large red globe grapes 2 cups blackberries 2 cups raspberries 2 cups blueberries

Chop carrots and larger fruits into manageable pieces.

Express juice from each fruit according the manufacturer’s directions of your particular juicer. Ours is a Galaxy singlegear juicer and, after juicing, we press the pulp through a second time to extract as much

juice as possible.

We also save an apple slice for the very end, to ensure all the berry pulp has been completely processed.

Once all the juices have been extracted, stir together.

Serve immediately or chill first. Keep refrigerated.

To work or not to work on the Sabbath Whether it’s Sabbath or the Day of the Lord, everyone deserves a break In Japan, they actually have a word for working yourself to death — “karoshi.”

The phenomenon became so alarming in the 1980s that the government started keeping statistics of how many employees worked themselves to death through excessive overtime.

In 2007, 189 workers in Japan died from karoshi.

Our bodies are simply not designed for that kind of stress and drudgery.

Most of those who died in Japan did not have previous health issues and their deaths were attributed to the sustained stress of overwork.

Ultimately, they “stroked out.”

If you talk to oilpatch workers doing 14- or 21-day shifts, they’ll tell you they get pretty owly after that many work days in a row.

Quite simply, we need regular rest days.

God gave a specific commandment on this issue (No. 4 if you’re counting): Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

Work six days and do everything you need to do.

But, the seventh day is a Sabbath to God, your God. Don’t do any work — not you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your servant, nor your maid, nor your animals, not even the foreign guest visiting in your town.

For in six days, God made heaven, Earth and sea and everything in them; he rested on the seventh.

Therefore, God blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as a holy day (Exodus 20:8-11 Message version).

The Sabbath is Saturday (actually sundown Friday to sundown Saturday).

Observant Jews and Seventh-Day Adventists take this quite literally.

In Israel, some buildings have “Sabbath elevators” that stop at every floor on Saturdays so ultra-orthodox Jews don’t have to push any buttons (i.e. “work” on the Sabbath).

One Adventist

church I visited had the sunset times for Friday and Saturday for the year on a card in the lobby and this is apparently observed even in the Far North.

I knew one Adventist man, very devout, who was an employee at one of the pulp mills in my previous town.

He used every accumulated stat, holiday and banked overtime hour he could to avoid working on the Sabbath.

Eventually, he lost his job when his union wouldn’t back him up.

So, how did Sunday become the time for worship and rest from work for the vast majority of Christian denominations?

Sunday is not the Sabbath — it is the Lord’s Day, a term that comes from the Revelation of John (“I was in the spirit on the Lord’s Day”).

Early Christians gathered on Sundays to honour the resurrection of Christ on that day.

CHRIS KEMPLING You Gotta Have FAITH decreed Sunday a civic “rest day” in 321 A.D. and, 40 years later, Sunday was the mandated day of worship for the Roman church.

In Jesus’ day, the Pharisees were quite persnickety about Sabbath observance, criticizing Jesus and his disciples for “working” (grabbing kernels of wheat to snack on as they were walking through a field).

They even plotted

to kill him after he healed a man with a withered hand on the Sabbath.

Jesus rebutted that common sense allowed for watering and feeding animals or pulling out a child who had accidentally fallen down a well on the Sabbath.

He also said that doing good on the Sabbath (i.e. healing) was not something God condemned.

In other words, essential or emergency work is permitted on the Sabbath.

Don’t we expect our phones, TVs, natural gas and electricity to work on the Sabbath?

Don’t we expect police officers and firefighters to show up if we have an emergency on Sunday?

Church is boring?
