A whirlwind of action has blown through Castlegar, leaving a city beautified by more than 30 one-of-akind works of art. Sculpturewalk 2013 has hit the ground and the assorted gems are tastefully scattered across our urban setting, there to be enjoyed at all times by all onlookers. This is the fourth staging of the event, and is naturally and positively progressing according to Castlegar Sculpturewalk Executive Director Joy Barrett: “We’re increasing in size each year. This year we have 31 sculptures which is up one from last year. I believe they started in the low 20s.” Organizers have been casting a bigger net for talent ever since the first effort back in 2010. “The reach of our artists is increasing,” Barrett continued. “We have Regine Neumann who has

flown in from Quebec with her piece (Rhythm of Being, outside RCMP detachment) this year. We have an Ontario artist, we have quite a few again from the ‘states… people driving in and flying in from all over to take part. We still heavily showcase local (Kootenays, Columbia Basin) artists, but we’re also getting a wider scope,” she explained. The May 25 gala at the Kootenay Gallery topped off a day-full of intense installation. “It was wonderful,” Barrett recalled on May 28. “I think it was the largest showing of artists that we’ve ever had in attendance. We had lots of sponsors and supporters.” A firm stipulation for this year’s would-be entrants was that they would have to have their work installed on the May 25th date… no exceptions. “I was pretty strict in the application,” said Barrett of the requirement. In year’s past there had been some who,

for whatever reason did not have their work up and on display with the rest. “I said if they’re not ready on installation day, we’re not going to put them up. For one thing, the voting starts right away. So if a work doesn’t come out for a month after, they’re missing out on the people’s choice voting.” The 31 works are now on display and voting is underway. Worth noting is the fact that 19 works from previous years, which have been leased or purchased also remain for the enjoyment of art lovers. Ballots for this year’s crop are available from the four boxes along the downtown tour. Full brochures with maps will be out next week… in the boxes, from the Castlegar Chamber of Commerce, and the Sculpturewalk office at 276 Columbia Avenue. Voting goes until the end of Sept. but the pieces will remain on display until the take-down next April.
