Enjoy sand, sun and lots of fun From beaches to swimming pools, plenty of places to take a dip on Peninsula
Looking for a way to cool off on a hot summer day on the Semiahmoo Peninsula? There are plenty of options when it comes to places to take a quick dip in our community. Here are the most popular swimming spots around White Rock and South Surrey:
Crescent Beach Crescent Beach, situated on the eastern shores of Boundary Bay, is a relaxing, low-key alternative to the hustle and bustle of nearby White Rock Beach in the summer. Whether the tide is out or in, one will find a whole host of activities at their fingertips. It’s a great place for playing on the beach, kite flying, ice cream, kayaking, having a picnic or searching for crabs and is undeniably one of the best swimming beaches in the region. A lifeguard is on duty from July through August to keep an eye on swimmers in the roped-off area. Another perk for visitors: free parking.
White Rock Beach Thousands of visitors from all over flock to White Rock Beach every summer to dive from the pier, take a dip in the ocean and sunbathe. Named after the large boulder deposited on its shoreline, this charming, oceanside community is located along an eight-kilometre stretch of sandy beach. The beach is always bustling with activity and excitement, especially around Marine Drive, where the sound of music echoes from the restaurant patios. At low tide, children build sandcastles, play frisbee and explore the marine life lurking below the seaweed. Swimmers note: White Rock Beach does not have a lifeguard on duty at any time throughout the year. Make sure you have a credit card or change to pay the parking meter.
South Surrey Indoor Pool If seaweed, sand and seawater aren’t your cup of tea, perhaps you should venture to a pool to keep your cool.
File photo
Crescent Beach is one of many spots on the Peninsula to enjoy a refreshing swim. Year round, the South Surrey Indoor Pool, measuring 37-metres in length, is a popular hotspot for swimmers of all ages and experience levels. With admission one has access to six 25-metre lanes, a dive tank and two diving boards. There’s also a children’s pool, a whirlpool and two dry heat saunas. All swim sessions are fun-filled and interactive. The “Fun Staff” lead activities and games throughout the afternoon and evening public sessions and are sure to leave you with a big smile on your face. Other sessions feature instructor-led fitness classes or assistance with your strokes. Visit www.surrey.ca for admission rates and swim schedules.
Sunnyside Outdoor Pool As soon as the sun begins to really sizzle on the Semiahmoo Peninsula, the Sunnyside Outdoor Pool on 26 Ave. and 152 St. in South Surrey becomes a haven for many. The gates open for public swims from mid-May to Sept. 1. Admission is always free. Swimming lessons take place at the pool throughout the summer from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Tong Louie Family YMCA Located at 14988 57 Ave., the Tong Louie Family YMCA offers a range of swimming lessons for all ages and abilities. The facility includes a toddler pool, 25-metre lanes for swimming lengths as well as a smaller special-use pool.
Crescent Beach Swim Club The Crescent Beach Swimming Club offers a broad aquatic program with opportunities for all family members at all levels. The pool and signature salt water tank have been a part of local swimming heritage for many years. The club is proud of its ability to serve the swimming community with programs including synchronized swimming, triathalon, water polo, family and medal swims.
South Surrey Athletic Park: Kids Water Park Swimming pools and salt water aren’t the only ways to stay cool. For the kiddies the water park located at South Surrey Athletic Park on 148 Street and 20 Avenue is always a barrel of fun and frolic. Best of all, it’s always free.

Peace Arch Elementary Park
4600-block of King George Boulevard Managed by the B.C. Ministry of Environment, Lands and Parks, this spot is great for exploring wildlife habitats for waterfowl, birds and more. The park includes birdwatching towers, as well as a natural area and trails.
15877 Roper Ave. This park is a great place for kids to romp around. The wheelchair-accessible playground includes a log roll, swings, slides and monkey bars. The fields are also perfect for an afternoon of sports, from soccer to batting a few baseballs – whatever your game of choice may be.
Redwood Park 17900 20 Ave. The site of a tree farm established years ago by the Browns, one of the Peninsula’s pioneer families. This 32-hectare park has a unique heritage. The Browns’ sons, twins David and Peter, lived in a twostorey tree house that has been rebuilt. The park also features five kilometres of hiking trails, as well as sheltered picnic areas, a playground and the largest stand of redwood trees north of California.
Sunnyside Acres 2598 144 St. Take a long walk through this second-growth forest abundant in giant hemlock, cedar and spruce. The woods span 124 hectares and are home to a collection of wildlife, from birds and coyotes to blacktailed deer. It was declared an ‘urban forest’ in 1988 and is treasured by many who work tirelessly to ensure it will be here to enjoy for generations to come.
Sunnyside Park 15455 26 Ave. This park is a great place to take the kids, especially during the
softball season when the diamonds are full of competing teams, and a concession stand is available to refresh loyal fans. The park also boasts an outdoor pool, two playgrounds, picnic areas, a soccer field, tennis courts and walking paths.
Tamanawis Park 12601 64 Ave. Recently improved, this park – a part of the Serpentine Greenway that connects all of Surrey – features two artificial turf fields, ball diamonds and more.
1001 Steps 12500-block of 16 Avenue Tucked away behind the bustle of Ocean Park, this gorgeous spot features nature trails and a staircase that ends at the waterfront of Crescent Beach. Also check out 101 steps, at the foot of 24 Avenue, which has access to the waterfront from a staircase through a wooded setting.

Local arts scene continues to thrive The arts scene on the Semiahmoo Peninsula is continuing to evolve around the hub of the Coast Capital Playhouse on Johnston Road, where award-winning White Rock Players' Club plays and shows by other groups continue to enrich the cultural fabric. City of White Rock initiatives to promote quality street busking have enlivened the already busy spring, summer and fall atmosphere on Marine Drive and in the uptown area, while a number of restaurants and pubs – particularly on White Rock’s waterfront strip and in Crescent Beach in Surrey – are also venues for live entertainment. The City of Surrey – as part of its Cultural Plan – has approved a 4,000- sq.-ft. addition to South Surrey Recreation Centre, second phase of planned expansion of arts space in South Surrey will include part of a multi-use public-private partnership development for city owned property at 19 Avenue and 152 Street. Also boosting the arts in White Rock and South Surrey is Semiahmoo Arts, based in the Mel Edwards Centre at Centennial Park, promoting literary, music and film events in the area.

Sports fans rejoice on Peninsula
S
Wide range of events to enjoy in community throughout the year
eeking a healthy dose of sports action this summer? You needn’t look too far, as the Semiahmoo Peninsula and Cloverdale are set to host enough athletic events to keep even the keenest of fans and athletes busy. Two of the area’s most popular events take place in July, when the Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship hits local softball diamonds, and is quickly followed by the Tour de White Rock cycling race. This year, the Canadian Open – entering its fourth year, after replacing the previous Canada Cup tournament – is set for July 12-22. The fastpitch event is one of the world’s largest, and features some of the world’s top girls and women’s softball teams in four different tournaments – international, elite, Futures (under 19) and Showcase (under 16). In the past, the tournament has routinely featured more than 80 teams and more than 1,300 players. The event is a popular draw for fans at both Softball City (2201 148 St.) and Cloverdale Athletic Park (6330 168 St.). The tournament is so well-regarded in international softball circles that the Canadian Open organizing committee – headed up by chairman Greg Timm – was named as Canada’s bid group for the 2016 Women’s World Championship. For more information on the event, visit www.canadianopenfastpitch. com Also, on the same weekend that the softball tournament hits the field, some of the world’s top cyclists will be pedaling through the streets of White Rock. The 34th Annual Tour de White Rock runs July 12-15 as part of BC Superweek. The Tour begins Friday, July 12 with the Just Giver For Parkinsons Amateur Hill Climb, which is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will give any amateur cyclist the chance to test their skills by pedaling up Buena Vista Avenue, from Oxford Street to just past Martin. Following the allcomers climb, the Tour riders will give it a go at 7 p.m. in what is one

of the most spectator-friendly events of the year. The next day, Saturday, the Tour de White Rock’s criterium will be staged in uptown White Rock. The criterium will see cyclists zip around a short, one-kilometre course that includes Johnston Road, Five Corners, White Rock City Hall and White Rock Elementary. The criterium races are among the most exciting of the weekend, as riders – cycling within mere centimeters of each other – reach speeds up to 70 km/h. The first race, for men’s category three and four riders, is set for 4 p.m., and is followed by the women’s pro and men’s pro races, at 5 and 6 p.m., respectively. The three-day event wraps up Sunday morning with the main event, the Peace Arch News Road Race, which begins at 9 a.m. In the road race – 130 km for the men, 80 km for the women – hundreds of cyclists line up along Marine Drive, and traverse a grueling, hilly course that’s full of long climbs, tight turns and
wonderful scenery. For more on the Tour de White Rock, visit www.tourdewhiterock.ca Aside from the Canadian Open and Tour de White Rock – which highlight the busiest stretch of summer on the local sporting calendar – there’s also a plethora of action to keeps sports fans and visitors entertained. The local ball diamonds have been especially busy since early spring, as the White Rock Tritons – both the U18 and U16 squads – have been on the field at South Surrey Athletic Park, and the White Rock Renegades, Surrey Storm and South Surrey White Rock Thunder softball associations have also been playing regularly throughout the city, from Softball City and Sunnyside Park to athletic parks in Newton and Cloverdale. There’s plenty of action in local pools, too, as South Surrey-based swim clubs like the Pacific Sea Wolves, and synchronized swim clubs like the BC Aquasonics, compete at meets through the Lower Mainland. As summer turns to fall, the local sports scene turns from the pool and diamond sports to the gridiron and hockey arenas. On the football field, the White Rock-South Surrey Titans minor football association plays Sundays throughout the fall, while at the high-school level, Earl Marriott and Lord Tweedsmuir secondaries will also field teams at various levels. On the ice, meanwhile, the Surrey Eagles are coming off one of the most successful seasons in franchise history. The junior ‘A’ hockey team, which plays out of South Surrey Arena, won the Fred Page Cup as BC Hockey League champions, and also captured the Western Canada Cup en route to a berth at the Royal Bank Cup national championships in Summerside, P.E.I. This fall’s team will lose a handful of players to the NCAA ranks – 10 had secured scholarships by early May – but under head coach Matt Erhart, have shown the ability to retool and stay as one of the league’s most competitive squads.
