ooking for the perfect lunch buffet? Tired of picking from the same three beers and greasy, bland pizza? The Rock Wood-Fired Pizza and Spirits is the answer to all of the above. Located at 40B, 5250 22nd St. in Red Deer, the establishment originally began in Tacoma, Washington but expanded into Canada with the help of co-owner to the Red Deer location, Sandy Nesbitt. “When our group saw The Rock (in Tacoma), we looked at the concept down there and loved everything about it - its craziness and the brand work they had done. It got a hold of me,” said Nesbitt on how he became involved with the franchise. Nesbitt explained that the concept of The Rock comes from the time after old rock and roll concerts when the band would finish performing and then eat pizza together after the

show backstage off of equipment boxes. The design of the establishment comes directly from this, he said. “The idea of the restaurant is to have it look like where a broken down rock and roll concert might happen, as it has the cool vibe of a post-concert party where you’ve got cool beers and cool drinks,” said Nesbitt. He added there are few white lights in the restaurant as well, and the majority of the lighting is concert lighting. “This gives everyone the glow of being onstage at night.” The interior and visual stimulation of The Rock doesn’t stop at the lighting and bandbox tabletops. It can also be seen when looking at the 10 ft. – 11,500lb wood oven. “The real thing that sets us apart is our oven. You couldn’t just decide one day that you want to have an oven like this in your restaurant - you need to build the restaurant around it.” The Rock is no stranger to landing praise for its incredible wood-fired

feasts and is renowned for having the City’s best lunch buffet, in which customers can enjoy all-you-can-eat pizza, pasta, and salads for $10. The scrumptious menu isn’t the only cause of satisfaction at the local eatery - the choices on their drink menu continue to amaze customers. “The drinks are fun and adventurous and something that you won’t find anywhere else,” said Nesbitt. The drink menu includes light-up lava lamp drink cups as well as plastic buckets filled with whatever customers can imagine. While some may think that the gritty, industrial atmosphere of The Rock may not suit families well, the restaurant has proved time and time again that it is a location that provides fun for the whole family. “What surprises me the most is that young kids enjoy the classic rock more than most adults might. We as adults remember the concerts, but now young kids enjoy the music we grew up on and so The Rock really crosses generations.”

If the old school tunes and TVs in the booths aren’t enough to keep the kids busy, every table with children is given pizza dough to play with while they visit. Nesbitt, who owns the rights for The Rock’s Canadian expansion, said that he always knew that the company would thrive in Canada when they signed onto the restaurant and that it shows in the successful expansion of The Rock into Calgary’s NW Royal Oak location. There are also plans to expand into Edmonton, Saskatoon, Regina, and Kelowna. “It’s got that classic rock and roll feel and good energy,” said Nesbitt. “But in the end it’s always going to come down to the food.” The rockin’ patio is the first in Red Deer to open every year as well. The Rock is open from 11 a.m. - 12 a.m. daily and until 2 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays. For more information, call 403-3097365 or check out www.therockwfp. com.

Academy of Learning gets you on your career path now With spring in the air, people naturally start thinking about renewal, and making big changes. Often, those changes involve going back to college for career training. But do you have to wait until September? “One of the most important aspects of what we do at Academy of Learning Career College is our ability to get people started on their new career training almost any time,” says college admissions advisor Virginia Walton. “The vast majority of our programs have people starting every week, and even the few programs that don’t still have several start dates per year.” Right now, most people looking at postsecondary education are thinking they have to wait until September, if they can even get into the program of their choosing at another college. Ms. Walton notes, “At Academy of Learning, we can get you started on your program well before summer. And since all of our career programs are one year or less, you’ll be done by next spring at the latest. For some of our shorter programs, you could be fully

trained and sending your new resume out to employers by fall, when others are just starting their programs.” Most Academy of Learning courses are presented using the Integrated Learning System, the revolutionary method that allows you to start immediately, as well as arrange your school hours around your life, instead of the other way around. Academy of Learning facilitators are all graduates of the same programs their students are enrolled in, giving them not only the expertise needed to assist you in your studies, but also the empathy and understanding you need from someone who’s been in your shoes. It’s always time to enrol at Academy of Learning Career College. With fulltime diploma and certificate programs ranging from 18 to 52 weeks in areas like office and business, accounting and payroll, information technology, web design, marketing, health care, legal administration, hotel and tourism management, and more, there’s something at Academy of Learning for everybody.

“Enjoy the

RV Lifestyle” BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express For more than 60 years, one Red Deer business prides itself on a family atmosphere and superior customer service. Vellner Leisure Products, located at 1890 49th Ave., or more commonly known as “The RV store on the corner with the fountain” is that business. “Vellner Leisure Products is a third generation RV dealership providing superior quality products and services designed to assist those who enjoy the RV lifestyle,” reads their mission statement. Third generation going on to their fourth! Founded in 1951 by Henry Vellner, the business has successfully run by Henry’s son James Vellner, current owner Marty Vellner (Henry’s grandson) and in the future perhaps one of Marty’s three sons will carry on the tradition. Ronanne Ashton, general manager and sales manager at Vellner said one thing that sets the company apart is it is family-owned and family-operated. Staff, their families and our customers…they are all part of the Vellner extended family. It is our culture, the atmosphere that we have created. We are selling lifestyle, we’re selling fun, we’re selling dreams.” This atmosphere also

translates well with customers. stomers. Vellner Leisure Products cts is a Keystone exclusive e dealership – the only one of its kind in Canada. “Although there are lots of manu-facturers and brands out ut there, we chose Keystone. one. We haven’t always been en Keystone exclusive…we chose to tag ourselves with a manufacturer that is secure, that has great product warranty and backing behind it,” said Ashton. “They make great RV’s!” “We chose one manufacturer to keep it simple which is really great for our service department because all of the products have the same warranty and all of the warranty claims go through the same company. It makes it easy for our sales staff too, because when they are educating the consumer, they know so much about what we have and they aren’t competing with different trailer brands on our own lot.” Customers are Cu encouraged to come en and an check out the inventory at Vellner in Leisure Products and Le e experience our sales p process. “ “Sometimes a c customer just wants

to look, so we invite them to come out to our lot, grab a bag of popcorn and take their time. They really like that there isn’t alot of pressure,” said Ashton. “It’s a very relaxed, friendly and fun atmosphere.” The business office at Vellner can also work within a customer’s budget, ensuring that purchasing an RV is a breeze. “The financing of RV’s is very different than the financing of automobiles. There are budgets for everybody if someone is looking for a particular payment that they are looking to be at.” Vellner Leisure Products is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information check out www.vellner. com or call 403-343-1464 or 1-877-572-7965.

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express ore and more clients are checking out the range of programs and classes that Red Deer’s Chair Tease Dance Studio offers. Located at 4810 -- 52nd St. (above Sterling Cleaners, across from Central Middle School), the studio first opened its doors in the fall of 2008. As owner/founder Natalie Brooks pointed out, the Studio offers a thoroughly unique and fun means of getting and staying in top condition through burlesque-inspired dance and a number of fitness classes as well. It also offers women ages 18 and up the opportunity to dance and exercise and have a super time together in a relaxed, comfortable environment. “We are synonymous with women, confidence and having fun, said Brooks, an accomplished, award-winning dancer in her own right. “It’s a really ‘chill’ place for women to go and to feel comfortable and sexy. “The classes are always full and they are always growing – I’m almost to the point where I’ve outgrown my new place. Some classes are also structured in a convenient drop-in format, such as the incredibly popular Zumba classes. Sessions typically follow a similar format – within one hour participants do 16 songs straight through. It combines all Latin styles of dancing including cha-cha, salsa and merengue.

“Our Zumba classes are bigger than ever, and we’ve got more instructors now, she said. “It’s our biggest drop-in for sure – we can get up to 50 people in a class, and we run classes every day – morning and evening – and weekends. Also, it’s not just for the ladies – Brooks’ classes have several guys that regularly take part as well. “There’s something for everyone – we have lots of students who take kick boxing or Zumba, but don’t take chair dancing. Or vice versa. “But a lot of girls, once they get in the door and see a chair tease

class while they’re waiting for their class to start, it doesn’t take them long to give it a try. It’s like music video dancing. Chair Tease Dance Studio offers about 20 different classes, and the age range is from 25 to about 60. Various body weights, sizes and shapes need not be an obstacle to taking part either. From the start, women have been attracted to Chair Tease Dance Studio because of its unique and overtly fun nature, said Brooks. Chair Tease has also grown in popularity not just through word-of-mouth but also through its connection to the recent Spring Gala Celebrity Dance Off which supported the Red Deer Hospice Society (Brooks and her partner have taken first place for the past two years). Meanwhile, Brooks is thrilled with how students have benefitted from their experiences at Chair Tease Dance Studio. “It’s a huge family – it really is, she said. “Everyone is really supportive. She’s also thrilled to see the positive impacts on her clients’ lives. “Especially ladies who aren’t feeling so good about themselves -it’s like they have a complete transformation once they start coming to our studio. They hold their heads up a little higher. It’s like there’s a ‘re-instillation’ of being a woman. Check out www.chairteasedance.com or call editor@reddeerexpress.com 403-391-2779.

Dragon City specializes in Cantonese and Szechuan cuisine BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express

Dragon City Café is sporting a fresh look and continues to offer a top-of-the-line selection of Chinese and western foods in its popular buffet. Described as specializing in Cantonese and Szechuan cuisine in particular, the restaurant is located at #157 – 2325, 50 Ave. As owner/manager Sam Bao points out, it’s that solid commitment to really listening to customer feedback that helps to keep customers returning on a regular basis. He’s in the ideal role to do that, as he helps out in virtually every aspect of the business from kitchen to front of house. The restaurant has been located in its current spot for about a dozen years, but Bao and his partner took over management and ownership four years ago, he said. Over the past while, the restaurant has been renovated and freshened up, offering patrons a warm, clean and comfortable place to dine out.

The overall shopping complex that Dragon City is located in has been newly renovated and revamped as well, adding to the modernized look. The menu features everything from chicken, beef, pork, seafood and chow mein to fried rice, chop suey, and several specialty items to choose from. The restaurant offers a take-out service as well. Customers can also choose a combination dinner with several delicious items for two, four or six people. Bao said Dragon City also offers free delivery for orders over $35 within the City limits. Meanwhile, customers have been generously offering their observations as well, and they are overwhelmingly positive. Comment cards mention encouraging words and phrases describing how pleased they are with the service, the selection and the overall look and feel of the premises. Bao gladly welcomes the feedback, and that

includes the less-then-positive notes that occasionally come along. In fact, Bao calls each person who is dissatisfied for whatever reason, so he can work to rectify the issue. He said he’s open to ideas from customers for the restaurant, and also ensures the menu is updated from time to time as well. “The customers do become our friends,” he said, adding that it’s the people he’s met over the years that really add to the joy of owning and operating a busy City eatery. He’s been in the restaurant business for some 20 years, and although it’s an often demanding line of work, he wouldn’t have it any other way. Red Deer Funeral Home & Crematorium committed to families BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express Committed to helping families, staff at Red Deer Funeral Home & Crematorium are dedicated to ensuring each and every detail integral to funeral planning is taken care of. Patrick Brown, a second-generation funeral director, has managed Red Deer Funeral Home & Crematorium for two years. The business, which has been in the City for 40 years, has been at its current location (6150 - 67 St.) for the past 20 years. Their crematorium is located in the beautiful grounds at Alto-Reste Cemetery east of Red Deer. “When we first came to Red Deer Funeral Home, we knew we wanted to make some changes,” he said. “So we created a more open space, a more modern home-like feel to it. We also put a reception centre in which is more common today than it was years ago.” A kitchen is also available onsite for families to use, and hostesses are also onhand to help with receptions as well. Brown’s wife Carley, a funeral director as well, works with him at Red Deer Funeral. The couple, originally from Calgary, are also dedicated to being involved in the community.

“I love serving people, and I put 100 per cent effort into it everyday,” said Patrick. “We have one chance to take care of a family, we don’t have multiple opportunities to do that. “It’s about our family serving your family.” There’s no question working in the industry has its challenges, but Patrick couldn’t imagine another career path. Walking with grieving families through such painful seasons of life, providing comfort and guidance and designing the perfect service brings a rich sense of fulfillment. And as he points out, the relationship doesn’t end with the service. “We do a lot of aftercare follow-up with families, too,” he said, indicating that folks often need a hand in dealing with paperwork and other issues connected to a death. “We often have families stop in for coffee a few months after the service, just to have a visit.” This is something that is important to Brown, “because it’s just not about the service we provide, it’s about the relationships we build.” Other community connections are provided through a memorial candlelight service at Christmas time and coming up, staff are hosting the funeral

home’s first annual yard sale. Table fees and proceeds from the staff table will be given to the Red Deer Christmas Bureau. In fact, every time a community event is planned, a local charity benefits, he said, adding that last year a pancake breakfast was held in conjunction with the Ronald McDonald House.

A special Father’s Day event is also being planned for next month. “We build relationships, and that’s what I try to stress. Yes, we are a business, but we are a personalized business and we are a service to the community. “When I have a chance to serve a family, it’s a true honor – and we have

to make sure we handle it right. We put everything into it – it doesn’t matter whether it’s a Saturday service or a Sunday night visitation, it’s what we are here for,” he said. “We’re here to serve the community.” editor@reddeerexpress.com

When Jeff Denham bought Fourlane Ford in Innisfail with his father Len in 1993 there were two computers in the entire building. Now they are celebrating their 20th year of operation and a thriving business that wouldn’t be complete without their esteemed online showroom. “Our online showroom is invaluable and we put significant resources and time into it because we feel it is a tool that people use in their daily life,” said Denham. “We can show our customers from wherever they are anywhere up to 30 photos of the exact vehicle and people really trust our web site because it is the actual vehicles in our lot shown, and not just generic images.”Denham believes that “Ford Motor Company has never been better, it has never been stronger and our products are leading the way in quality, safety, technology and fuel economy so for us to be in Central Alberta at this time is a huge blessing. “I’ve seen the quality and improvement of the products we sell increase 20-fold and it is almost shocking to see how they’ve changed since I started 20 years ago,” said Denham. “People are also busier than they were 20 years ago, so we have addressed that need, whether it be streamlining our sales process or the integration of technologies such as our website, email and even texting into almost everything we do to make it as easy as possible for our customers to do business with us.” Unlike the cars they sell and the technology they use to do it, some things never change at Fourlane Ford, such as the incredible sales and service experience, top notch customer satisfaction levels and the family atmosphere of the locallyowned and operated business. These attitudes and mindset have been the main reason that Fourlane Ford has been awarded the highest award given out by Ford Motor Company, The Presidents Award, 17 out the last 20 years. No Dealership in Central Alberta has won this more. “It’s a privilege, we’ve been able to be a part of a business community in Central Alberta that has seen nothing but growth and positivity. “We really appreciate the people of Central Alberta and how loyal they’ve been to us and the opportunities they’ve given to us and it is a great honour and privilege to my dad and myself and all of our staff.”

Denham believes that the success of Fourlane is largely because of the high quality of character that they look for when hiring staff and that it is about more than hiring just ‘car people’. Employees must first and foremost have a great interest in helping people and have a team-oriented mindset. “We’ve got some awesome staff, some that have been with us for as long as 20 years and that’s a big part of who we are,” said Denham. “Our entire business is run on the principle of teamwork – service teams, sales teams and I believe that itt s. is our team ethics that set us apart from other dealerships. We truly care about our customers, about developing thatt g lifetime relationship with our customers and about serving their needs.” h Fourlane’s no pressure, no gimmicks, no tactics approach to business leaves them with a straightforward and honestt g business model in which they will always stand by everything they say and do, he said. “For me I think that everyone forgetss e that it is supposed to be a car business but we see it as a people business,” said Denham. “Our mission statement is ‘We’re in a people businesss serving an automotive need, creating friends and customers for life’ and that’s what we do.” Denham will be the first to admit that no business is perfect and even Fourlane can make mistakes, but he believes that it is how a person or company deals with those mistakes that truly shows the character of the business. “In today’s age of larger, bigger businesses we are different in that we are locally owned and locally operated,” said Denham. “I myself am here pretty well everyday and to be able to o e. come in and talk with the owner really means a lot to people. We aren’t afraid to get personal with our customers.” rDenham emphasizes that as a leader he hopes to see Fourmlane Ford continue to flourish in the Alberta business comd munity by sticking to their roots of being a family-owned and operated business. o He also stressed the importance of a customer being able to e feel comfortable to walk in and deal with trustworthy people where they can be treated fairly and respectfully. l. Fourlane Ford can be found at 4412 – 50th St. in Innisfail. Staff welcomes inquiries at 403-227-3311.

r. Brian Saby is the sole dentist at Smiles by Saby. He has been a dentist for 32 years, 31 of those years right here in the Red Deer area. Dr. Saby grew up in Red Deer and has always loved the Central Alberta area, so he purchased a dental practice in Sylvan Lake in 1982 where he spent 7 years as a town dentist. He eventually moved his practice to Red Deer where he continues to provide dentistry for all of his Central Alberta clients. Dr. Saby is a solo practitioner who prides himself on exemplary customer service. Dentistry is more than just Dr. Saby’s occupation; it is also his main hobby. Dr. Saby clearly loves his profession and his love for dentistry is stronger than ever, even after 32 years, because he remains very excited about dentistry and its unique challenges. Dr. Saby’s dental practice philosophy: “I want to look after my patients to the best of my ability. I think of myself as the quarterback of your dental team. I work with my patient to determine the outcome they desire, and then I

provide the general dental services, direct any treatments best completed by dental specialists and do the Änal restorative dentistry. We like to provide every patient with a comprehensive treatment plan that will give them all of their options and personal choices. I let them know what I can do and the patient lets me know what they want me to do.” This philosophy is a cornerstone of Dr. Saby’s dental practice. Dr. Saby explains how dentistry has changed since he began his own career at the age of 23. The technical aspect of dentistry has expanded by leaps and bounds since his graduation in 1981, an era when most dental procedures were focused on elimination of disease. The early 80s was a time when the main focus of most dental practices was Äxing cavities and treating gum disease. Since then, a veritable dental revolution has added many cosmetic dental procedures like veneers, whitening and bonding. Today’s dentists can not only help with the elimination of disease, but they can also help enhance appearance in patients. Dr. Saby believes that

Get your home or office organized at anadian Closet is a locally owned and operated business that has its roots right here in Red Deer. In 1997, Terry Hollman and his wife, Lisa Love-Hollman, came up with the concept of a store that provides homeowners with a one stop shop for all of their storage and organizational needs. “Most customers think that we are a large nationwide corporate franchise but nothing could be farther from the truth” said Terry. “We are a family owned and operated small business”. Many weekends you will even see their children Eryn and Mason helping out in the store. Canadian Closet moved to their new location in April of 2012 - one block south of Costco on Gasoline Alley. “It has turned out to be a great move. Our new location is three times larger, giving us substantially more space for merchandising and showing our displays,” said Terry. “Our loyal customers have given our new store fantastic reviews”. As their name suggests, Canadian Closet’s main focus has always been closet organization for new home construction and renovation, but over the past sixteen years they have expanded their product lines to include Alberta’s largest selection of storage & organizational solutions for your kitchen, bathroom, laundry room, office and garage. If you have clutter in any of those areas of your home, Canadian Closet will have a solution. They have even recently added a Professional Organizer to their staff. “We will go into your home, assess your issues and assist you with de-cluttering. We will then find solutions to make your home more efficient and organized” says Terry. This time of year is traditionally very busy for Canadian Closet with garage organization. “We have an incredible selection of specialty hooks and attachments to hold everything from golf clubs to garden tools, hockey equipment to winter tires” said Terry. “For

the month of June, all of our FreedomRail® garage components are 25% off. Now is a great opportunity to get your garage organized”! Canadian Closet has its own local millwork division that proudly manufactures Murphy Beds, home offices, entertainment centre’s, entry benches and of course custom wood closet organizers. “Many people do not know that we offer custom wood closets. We got our start installing ventilated wire shelving but have now included our own line of wood closets systems to cater to the upper end housing market” says Terry. The Murphy Wall Bed is exclusive to Canadian Closet in Central Alberta. “Most people have either heard of or seen a Murphy bed” says Terry. “Murphy Beds are a cabinet that is mounted on a wall and folds down into a bed when required”. Recently, Canadian Closet was selected by the Central Alberta Home Builders Association as the 2013 “small trade of the year”. “It’s an honour to be recognized by our builder partners” says Terry proudly. “I have to extend a huge thank you to our staff. They are all very hardworking, dedicated and caring and treat our clients and business as if they were their own”. “We are very fortunate to work with almost all of the home builders in Central Alberta”. Chances are if you have built a new house in the past 16 years, Canadian Closet has installed your closet organizers. Canadian Closet is also Central Alberta’s exclusive distributor for Phantom Door Screens. “With all the great weather we have been having, the phone has not stopped ringing with customers calling to book a Phantom Door Screen installation. Phantom Screens are another superior, functional product offering that we proudly sell & install” says Terry. So make your way to Canadian Closet where a solution can be found for all of your storage and organizational needs.

Relaxation and healing at O2 xy-wellness BY EVAN BUHLER Red Deer Express For those Central Albertans that are looking for a place to relax and heal they can check in to o2xy-wellness. Customer-friendly services that are provided by o2xy-wellness include hyperbaric oxygen therapy, sleep apnea testing and treating through the use of CPAP machines, meditation, as well as massage and reiki therapy. “We treat many people, from sports injuries, concussions, multiple sclerosis, stroke patients, children with autism, diabetics with non-healing ulcers, and many others” said o2xy-wellness CoOwner Al Evans. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy sees the patient placed in an airtight chamber at an increased atmospheric pressure, while the patient is administered and breathes in 100% pure oxygen. Pure oxygen is pressurized and circulates

throughout the chamber during the treatment, which means the patient does not have to wear a mask or hood. Due to the increase in atmospheric pressure and oxygen concentration in the chamber, oxygen is able to be absorbed more freely into the body, about 15 to 20 times the normal concentration. After the treatment patients are able to resume their normal daily activities such as working or driving. The prevalence of MS in Alberta is the highest in the world. Evans said that they have a very high success rate when dealing with MS patients. “My family is ecstatic about my results. They are amazed that something this simple can make such a difference and we have it available in Canada and Central Alberta,” said Wendy. Wendy has been battling MS for 13 years and since starting HBOT at o2xy-wellness, she has

regained feeling in her feet and her cognitive awareness gradually improved. “I would recommend HBOT to all MS people,” said Wendy. The awareness about the benefits of HBOT is increasing in North America; even Michelle Obama has embraced the technology. Constantly feeling fatigued or falling asleep at short intervals and poor concentration or memory are telltale signs of sleep apnea, and should not be avoided, said Evans. Sleep apnea is an easily diagnosed sleep disorder that causes an abnormal pause in breathing or moments of low breathing. Testing is easy. It can be done in the comfort of your home. When learning Meditation, taught by Co-Owner Chris Evans, a personal mantra or specific sound or vibration is repeated silently and helps

Sylvia Bardoel you to enter deeper levels of awareness. Numerous health benefits, from meditating on a regular basis include lowering blood pressure, strengthening the immune system, and releasing stress and fatigue. Half an hour of meditation provides more psychological rest than a full night’s sleep. 02xy-wellness is extremely excited to offer Massage and Reiki therapy as well. Sylvia Bardoel (Reiki Master & Registered Massage Therapist) performs Reiki, which is a Japanese technique for relaxation and stress reduction that promotes healing as well. She offers a special 90 minute treatment that consists of 45 minutes of Massage and 45 minutes of Reiki. If you have never experienced Reiki this is a blissful experience.
