Connecting with our city Pitt Meadows Day – June 1, 2013
F
or generations, Pitt Meadows Day has been a highlight within our community. With the busy schedules we all have today, it’s nice to have one special day where we all come together and celebrate being part of such a wonderful place. Walters Everyone loves Pitt Meadows Day, from the littlest citizen to the most senior of our residents. It is a day filled with tradition and new activities.
Road closures There will again be road closures during Pitt Meadows Day festival on Saturday. The 65 parade entrants will gather on Hammond Road between Blakely and North Bonson roads, on the west side of Blakely Road between Hammond and 116th Avenue, and the north side of 117th Avenue, as well as the west side of 195B Street and on the north side of 116th Avenue, east to South Bonson. ‘No parking’ signs will be put in place prior to Pitt Meadows Day, but no driveways will be blocked. Rick Higgs of the Pitt Meadows Day Society is hoping that residents in this area, west of Blakely and south of Hammond, will use caution when exiting east through the mustering area to South Bonson Road.
Get the family together and head over to the pancake breakfast, watch the parade, enjoy the entertainment and activities at Harris Road Park, and end the day with a barbecue dinner and take in the fireworks at dusk. What a perfect day. Thank you to all the wonderful volunteers who take the time each year to plan, organize, and run this event that is so fondly remembered and looked forward to each year. The Pitt Meadows Day Society and several other groups contribute their time, talents and efforts to make each year better than the last, and without them we would miss one of the best events for connecting our city. On behalf of myself and council, have a happy and safe Pitt Meadows Day. On the day of the parade, the parade route will be closed to all traffic at 10:30 a.m., from Hammond and Blakely Roads west to Harris Road and then north to McMyn Road. Anyone living along the parade route needing to exit will have to do so prior to the closure. After 10:30 a.m., Harris Road south of Lougheed Highway will be closed to traffic. Once the closures are in effect, residents south of Lougheed and east of Harris can exit to Lougheed Highway using Park Road. Those south of the Canadian Pacific Railway and east of Harris can exit using North Bonson Road and Hammond eastbound. Residents south of Lougheed and west of Harris can leave using Meadowvale Mall to get to Lougheed Highway. Those living south of the CP Railway west of Harris Road can leave using Ford Road east to Baynes Road south to Airport Way.

Wakeling 2012 top citizen Draw By Colleen Flanagan
S
andy Wakeling is the 2013 Pitt Meadows Citizen of the year. Presented by the Pitt Meadows Foundation on Pitt Meadows Day, the award recognizes someone who makes a contribution to improving the quality of life of a single person, a family, a school or the community. A person chosen is usually involved in a number of community projects and is resident of Pitt Meadows for at least one year. “Sandy really stood out in the selection process,” said Michael Hayes, president of the Pitt Meadows Foundation. “Pretty amazing with all of what he’s done. He was a very deserving candidate for this award.” There were 11 candidates this year with numerous nomination forms filled out for each one. Wakeling spent five years serving as chair of the Pitt Meadows Economic Development Advisory Committee and another year when it transitioned to the Economic Development Corporation. He served as the director for the chamber of commerce and spent two years on the Pitt Meadows Official Community Plan Review Committee. He was also on the Pitt Meadows Day Organizing Committee for several years and spent two years with the Friends in Need Food Bank. Wakeling has also been a communications assistant at B.C. Hydro, a communications analyst at the B.C. Medical Association, a community relations manager and constitu-
ency assistant for former Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows MLA Ken Stewart, a community relations officer for Fraser Health, director of marketing and communications for Meadowridge School, director and online recruitment and online E-day chair for B.C. Premier Christy Clark, a freelance and social media strategist at Communications Professional and executive assistant to the Hon. Michael de Jong, when he was the B.C. Minister of Health. Wakeling is now the communications manager for the Langley School District. Wakeling is flattered and humbled by the recognition. “Community service for me has never been about the recognition, but it’s certainly heartwarming to see that what I’ve done or what I’ve had the opportunity to take part in hasn’t gone unnoticed,” said Wakeling. “I hope it serves, if nothing else, as an inspiration to our own children about the importance of being involved and giving back to the community that you live in.” Nomination forms are held onto for three years to give all nominations a fair chance. “That gives everybody a fair chance,” Hayes said. As Citizen of the Year, Wakeling will be participating in the Pitt Meadows Day parade and opening ceremonies, Pitt Meadows Canada Day celebrations and also the Remembrance Day ceremony. The Pitt Meadows Community Foundation has been honouring Citizen of the Year since 1997.

olene Banns will be crowned Miss Pitt Meadows at this year’s opening ceremonies. The Grade 6 student at Highland Park elementary is excited about her new role and has already written her speech for the occasion. Leigha Luschnat, the current Miss Pitt Meadows and a friend of Banns at school, will be passing her the crown. Banns plays the guitar and has just recently taken up the piano. She also enjoys dance, especially hip hop for its variety of dance moves. Banns’ family has been living in Pitt Meadows for almost 100 years and many of her family members have been in the Royal Party in years past. Her older sister was once a First Attendant and her youngest sister has been a flower girl. Twenty four years ago, her stepsister was also crowned Miss Pitt Meadows.
Colleen Flanagan/THE NEWS
Jolene Banns is not the first in her family to take part in the Royal Party on Pitt Meadows Day. Miss Pitt Meadows and other members of the Royal Party are selected from qualifying students who have lived in Pitt Meadows for at least two years. The Royal Party consists of 10 flower girls from Grades 1 to 3, two flag
bearers of Grade 4 boys, one Grade 5 girl medallion bearer, one Grade 5 girl record bearer, Miss Pitt Meadows and her three attendants, all Grade 6 girls, and the retiring Miss Pitt Meadows and her attendants.

P I T T M E A D OW S DA Y Lynn Papp award winner dedicated to helping others By Colleen Flanagan
G
irl Guide leader, environmental ambassador and humanitarian Christine Thompson has won the Lynn Papp Community Service award this year. “It’s just really nice to be recognized and to know that people are at least seeing what’s going on in the community,” said the Pitt Meadows resident, who was initially surprised when she was told she had won the award and was even more surprised to find out her parents weren’t the only ones to nominate her. Thompson loves camping and canoeing in the summer, snowboarding in the winter and music all-year-round.She frequently plays the bass. For the past three years, the 18-year-old Thompson has volunteered more than 350 hours as a junior leader for the Pitt Meadows Girl Guides, leading games, crafts and songs, attending meetings, teaching children camping skills and sharing with them her love of the outdoors. Thompson has dedicated more 70 hours helping to run and supervise summer day camps through

For five straight years, she has organized the a shoreline clean-up on the Alouette dike and has volunteered with the Alouette River Management Society, planting trees and helping get rid of invasive plant species in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. She participates in the Pitt

Meadow’s Remembrance Day ceremony every year. Thompson recently spearheaded a monthly project with her Venture Scouts group to prepare, pack and deliver care packages to the homeless people on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside – a project Thompson felt was amazing because it was face-to-face and personal.
Thompson helped organize Halloween for Hunger 2012 with the local food banks and has spent 240 hours teaching environmental stewardship and ecology at the North Vancouver Outdoor School. She has raised money and awareness for We Day, volunteering as a ‘crowd pumper’ to keep participants motivated throughout the event. Thompson attends Pinetree secondary in Coquitlam for its Global Perspectives program, which teaches students about issues in developing nations. It was with this class that she spent three weeks in Cambodia, helping build a Woman’s Centre and teach English to a kindergarten class. Thompson, who loves travelling, was amazed at how welcoming the people were. Next, she wants to go to India. “I love the culture, the food and I know there is quite a big need right now for health care,” said Thompson adding that she loves working with children in developing countries. “If I could teach English, that would be fantastic.” In June Thompson will be receiving the highest Guiding award for her level, the Chief Commis-
sioner’s Gold Award, and will be working towards the Duke of Edinburgh award. She also started the Gay/Straight Alliance at her high school. Thompson, who is graduating this year, is considering sociology or psychology programs the University of British Columbia or Simon Fraser University. “I really like the idea of [becoming] a humanitarian aid worker. We recently had the Red Cross come to our school and it kind of blew my mind, the types of things they get to do. I’m also looking into the idea of being a counsellor for troubled youth, I think that would be a great job,” said Thompson adding that she was also considering a career as a motivational speaker because she enjoys public speaking. Lynn Papp was a longstanding member of the Pitt Meadows Day Society who volunteered with many other organizations, including the Ridge Meadows Minor Baseball Association. Papp passed away suddenly in February 2000. The Lynn Papp award is given to a Pitt Meadows youth who displays her spirit of giving without expectation of personal gain or recognition.

he official Pitt Meadows Day ceremony will take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The Royal Party will ascend the main stage, signaling the start of the event. There will then be the singing of O’Canada and a welcoming address by the Katzie First Nations. Dignitaries, including Pitt Meadows Mayor Deb Walters, Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin, MLA-elect Doug Bing and MP Randy Kamp, will greet the crowd. Following the greetings, the Pitt Meadows Day Queen will be crowned. This year’s queen is 12-year-old Jolene Banns. The Pitt Meadows Foundation will then recognize the Citizen of the Year. In memory of Lynn Papp, once a hard-working volunteer of the Pitt Meadows Day committee, will be awarded to a deserving youth who selflessly contributes their time to the betterment of the community. This year’s winner is 18-year-old Christine Thompson.

Miss Pitt Meadows will be crowned during the opening ceremony. Finally, the winner of the Ron Morrisette award will be announced. The Ron Morrisette award was created last year upon request of his widow and family in honour of the long-time Pitt Meadows Day volunteer, who paid special attention to organizing the parade. They wanted to create an award to be presented to an individual that best
exemplifies the spirit of Pitt Meadows Day and to recognize the hard work volunteers put into the festival every year. After some singing and dancing entertainment, the Royal Party and their guests will be escorted off the stage by a bag piper to the Royal Tea at the Lion’s Den, where a light lunch will be served and the record book is signed.

Pitt day is jam-packed By Colleen Flanagan
Pitt Meadows will celebrate the 70th annual, Pitt Meadows Day on Saturday. What started out as a Strawberry Tea grew into a May Day celebration in 1937, with May Pole dancing and a May Day Queen. After the Second World War, it was decided that an early June date would fit better with farmers and their planting schedules and Pitt Meadows Day was born. From 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. the Pitt Meadows Lions Club will be holding their annual pancake breakfast. At 9 a.m., parade participants should check-in at the booth located on the south east corner of Blakely Road and Hammond Road. The parade will begin at 11 a.m. at Blakely Rd. and Hammond Rd. and travel west on Hammond and then north on Harris Rd. to end at McMyn Road. Following the parade until 5 p.m., Harris Road Park will be filled with fun, free activities for the whole fam-
ily to enjoy. There will be a rock wall for climbing, a real live milking cow on display by the B.C. Milk Producers, a bouncy castle for toddlers, martial arts demonstrations, several Jaguar sports cars will be on display, live music and a crafts area where artisans will have their work on display and for purchase. Children will be able to build a birdhouse, plant sunflowers, get their face painted and create projects at the imagination market. There will be a petting zoo with calves, rabbits and sheep and children can also enjoy a llama buggy ride. Several 4-H clubs will be showcasing their record books and will be holding demonstrations on how to correctly groom and feed the animals. There will be sack races, crab walking and egg-andspoon races. Antique engines and a heritage fire truck will be on display along with historical information about Pitt Meadows Day at the Hoffman Garage and the Pitt
Meadows Museum. In the south field beyond the one-way parking lot, behind Langley Farm Market, there will be a minor stage set up to provide entertainment for children. From 1:30 to 2 p.m., part of Youthfest, the skateboard park will be having skating demonstrations and discussions of skating ethics and safety. The Pitt Meadows Day Queen will be crowned at 1 p.m. in a ceremony that includes the entire royal party and speeches by dignitaries. Youthfest will be either outside at Spirit Square or inside the Pitt Meadows Recreation Centre, depending on the weather, from 12:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., featuring up-and-coming local rock bands. For a delicious salmon and chicken barbecue dinner, the Pitt Meadows Volunteer Fire Department will be serving it up from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the downstairs room at Heritage Hall. Members of the volunteer fire department have been preparing and cooking the

ocal pop, hip hop and rock bands will be entertaining the crowds at Pitt Meadows Day this year. The funky sounds of Penelope Above, a four-piece rock band from Pitt Meadows, will be taking the stage along with DaniElle, 17-year-old Danielle Severinski, whose country music sounds took second place in You-
think magazine’s B.C.’s Best Teen Contest on April 27. The Faceplants, a band based out of Coquitlam who have toured western Canada and who recently joined with Hedley’s Tommy Mac to produce their self-titled debut EP, will be offering a mix of pop, hip hop and reggae. Indie rock group Brocken Spectre, a self-described “avant-pop tour de force” will also be performing.

Barbecue and salmon By Colleen Flanagan
F
our hundred and twenty pounds of salmon has been preordered for the Pitt Meadows Day barbecue this
year. The Pitt Meadows fire department takes care of the salmon barbecue every year. While most of the fire department marches in the Pitt Meadows Day parade, honourary members of the department stay behind to prepare the fish and apply their own secret spices. Cooking starts at 3 p.m. on barbecues set up behind the tourism office at Harris Road Park and are manned by 10 to 12 firefighters. Around 800 plates of food was served last year. The cost is $9 per plate, with a choice of barbecued salmon or chicken, served with potato salad, a bun and carrots on the side. Dinner will be served up from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the downstairs room at Heritage Hall.
Fireworks cap off day One hundred and seventy unique fireworks will light up the skies for Pitt Meadows Day. Pitt Meadows paid-on-call firefighter and fireworks supervisor Bruce Edwards says there are many new fireworks he can’t wait to set off.
He will be setting off a variety of three- to six-inch shells that will fly up to 1,500 feet into the sky. He has some that will be shaped like the letters ‘Z’ and ‘W’ and some that will go up shaped like palm trees. There will be ones called Red Bees that will buzz like bees in the sky. He will also be setting off cake box fireworks that will fly up to 23 metres high. One called Poisonous Spider is expected to set off 50 loud shots. The fireworks will be set off just after dusk, around 10 p.m., but Edwards recommends getting to Pitt Meadows Athletic Park for 9:30 p.m. to make sure you get a spot. Flares on the ground will be lit 20 minutes before starting the show. Once the flares run out, the fireworks will begin. Airport Road will be closed to traffic and pedestrians from 9:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. from Bonson Road to Harris Road due to fallout from the display. Edwards also has to alert the Pitt Meadows airport so planes don’t fly overhead. Anyone taking off or landing will be redirected to approach from the other side of the airfield. Since the trees along the west side of the park have been removed, Edwards expects the viewing area will be opened up for people living in the area and along the south end of Harris Road. However, he says, you won’t get the full effect unless you are at the park.
