Lobby grows to include space for dogs on parkway KEVIN PARNELL The Lake Country Dog Owner’s Association is hoping plans for a new public space alongside the old Highway 97 will eventually include an off leash dog park with access to Wood Lake.

As conceptual plans and public meetings move along for the new Pelmewash Parkway, the dog owners association took their needs directly to District of Lake Country council at the DLC’s last public meeting.

“We just wanted to come and make sure we are being heard about our wishes for the dog owners in this area to get some lake front access on the new design of the Pelmewash Parkway,” said Steve Chung, a member of the board of directors for the Lake Country Dog Owners Association. “We love the idea of the whole family-type of things

with cycling, walking and everything around there. Pets are a big part of the family for a lot of people out here.”

According to the dog owner’s association, there is virtually no access to water for dogs with the current dog part allotment in Lake Country and only a small place located on Woodsdale Rd. is available right now, but it’s less than ideal as it is not very accessible for more than a few people.

“Water access for dogs is definitely something that we desire,” said Mark Jost, also a board member for the dog owners. “There are a significant number of pets and pet owners that currently use the little dog area off Woodsdale Road but we’d like to reiterate that the Pelmewash proposal include a dog friendly area with access to water.”

The Lake Country Art Gallery is presenting its new exhibit featuring the works of three Canadian artists, Michelle Hall, Amy Friend and Laura Madera, beginning next week.

Traces: The Dreamt, the Seen, the Remembered runs from June 5 to July 19 at the art gallery in Lake Country.

Traces is the fifth exhibition at the Lake Country Art Gallery this year and prominently features three female artists.

Traces is an exhibition that celebrates the small fragments of life that leave everlasting imprints on us.

Sometimes the smallest things stick with you for a lifetime. Beliefs, people and memories; none are eternal but each leave small traces upon us that may never fade.

Traces was a project conceived long ago by curator Katie Brennan. Over the past few years Brennan met a couple of the artists in

Discussion was held on ideas for the parkway with the public bringing forth different thoughts including planned hiking, biking or walking trails for the area, the actual road that may or may not be closed off, the use of day use areas

and pullouts that currently exist, public art, boats and boat launches as well as other issues such as possible transit to the area as well as the actual name of the parkway.

There are no further dates set for public consultation but according to the district of Lake Country, the next open house, expected sometime in June or July, will present two options for

the future of Pelmewash. A meeting could be delayed until the actual opening of the new highway.

Look for the possibilities within yourself–volunteer “My quest would not be a selfish one. I could not leave knowing these faces and feelings would still exist, even though I would be set free from mine.”

Those words were spoken by Canadian hero Terry Fox as he took part in his campaign to run across Canada for cancer research.

Now the Terry Fox Foundation is looking for a Lake Country resident to help organize the 33rd annual Terry Fox Run, taking place later this fall.

Fox was a person who looked for the possibil-

ities in an impossible task and made a huge difference.

It was Terry’s determination towards his ultimate goal – to outrun cancer – that exemplifies the importance of leading by example. Fox ran 5,373 kilometers over 143 days with the goal of seeking a cure for those affected by cancer and giving those around him something to hold onto – hope.

This year marks the 33rd annual Terry Fox Run and the community of Lake Country needs a volunteer run organizer to help keep Terry’s mes-

sage alive. By becoming a run organizer, you become an integral part of carrying Terry’s torch and helping Lake Country contribute towards finding a cure for cancer.

Last year, the Terry Fox Foundation raised over $26 million for cancer research, and the foundation is looking for someone to help build off of that. The foundation will help anyone who is interested in volunteering to be an organizer through the planning process. It is incredibly important that someone steps forward immediately for

this meaningful cause, as the run is fast approaching and will take place on Sunday Sept. 15, according to Donna White, provincial director for the Terry Fox Foundation B.C. and Yukon.

“It would be such a shame for the people of Lake Country to miss out on an opportunity to keep Terry’s legacy alive as every community no matter how big or small can make a huge impact, just as Terry learned when a small town of 10,000 people raised over $10,000”, said White “Every contribution matters, and like

Terry, we will continue to work together to outrun cancer.”

Oyama Fun Day— Fun for Everyone, goes Sunday, June 2.

This annual event, sponsored by the Oyama Community Club, 15710 Oyama Rd., is a tribute to the spirit of Oyama. With the help of many volunteers the club offers a jam packed day of fun for families.

The fun begins at 8 a.m. with the Pancake Breakfast, Silent Auction and the famous Peep Peep Poop contest.

The parade looks to be the largest and longest yet, drawing many local businesses and groups as well as dignitaries from throughout the Okanagan.

Oyama Road will be closed from the Oyama General Store to Oyama Traditional School from 10:45 to 11:15 a.m. June 2 for the parade.

The afternoon activities get underway with

some good old-fashioned games of tug-ofwar, sack races, ice cream eating contest and egg toss. The youngsters will be kept entertained for the rest of the afternoon with the Kids Games Pavilion, DLC Bounce Zone, Lake Country Agility Mutts, SECA Watersport Demo, Sportball and lots of other community sponsored activities.

The Interior Savings Fat Cat Children’s Festival, taking place June 7 in Kelowna’s Waterfront Park, is calling for volunteers to help deliver a magical, fun-filled festival for kids of all ages.

“Fitting in with this year’s theme: Curious Fat Cat Wants to Know: What Kind of Cat are You?, we are asking the community members to be volunteer cats,” said artistic director Dorothee Birker.

“By being a volunteer cat and sharing a few hours of your time, you give so much to your community and especially to the kids.”

Volunteers are needed for the information booth and gates, as well as for helping to run the many activity stations where kids get to be creative and to learn through experiential activities. The activity stations include face paint-

ing, crafty cats, inflatable zone, sticky sensations and much more. Volunteers are also urgently needed for the parade on Saturday morning, helping with barricades and with crowd control.

“We have wonderful volunteers that help us each year, but as the Festival grows so do our needs for more volunteers,” said Kim Butt, volunteer director. “It is a very rewarding role and so many volunteers feel enriched because they are so appreciated by the kids and families that come to the festival, plus our volunteer team is a great crew of people, so it is a fun thing to do with your friends and to make new ones as well.”

Amy Friend is an artist based in St Catherine’s, Ont., who Brennan met in Banff. As the recipient of the Emerging Artist Windsor Endowment for the Arts (2012), Friend’s work has been growing increasingly celebrated and recognized. Her photography depicts family heirlooms, including the nightgowns of her deceased grandmother. This series of photographs explores what is left after her grandmother’s death.

Friend blends elements of light and contrast with the flowing nightgowns’ forms, transparencies and colours to depict more than the ethereal, sheer materials themselves.

“The worn areas, marks of where her body had been, emit an aura of her presence,” wrote Friend.

Michelle Hall is an

Okanagan artist whose multimedia work utilizes text to explore the conception of beliefs.

Throughout her portfolio, Hall traces how her experience with others has created or proliferated beliefs within herself.

Laura Madera is an Ontario based artist. Her work utilizes the traditional mediums of watercolour and gouache, expanding the mediums in new directions.

Madera’s watercolour paintings are abstracted patterns and surfaces infused with bleached out light. Her memories of events and time are evoked through transparencies and luminous forms.

The Lake Country Art Gallery hosts the opening gala for Traces: The dreamt, the seen, the remembered, Wednesday, June 5 at 6 p.m. The exhibition closes July 19.

The gallery is at 10356A Bottom Wood Lake Road.

BCTF digs in for endless war

L

ike those Japanese soldiers who didn’t hear about the end of World War II, the militant fringe that controls the B.C. Teachers’ Federation is digging in for endless battle against the B.C. government.

Their nemesis, Premier Christy Clark, reiterated last week that seeking a 10-year agreement with the BCTF is a top priority when the legislature is recalled this summer.

The current one-year truce ends June 30. The BCTF grudgingly agreed to that extension last year, then ran TV ads calling for an NDP government that promised concessions and union bosses on both sides of the negotiating table.

“You know, I may be a lame duck,” outgoing BCTF president Susan Lambert crowed to cheering classroom-warfare radicals at the union’s convention in March, “but I think Christy’s goose is cooked.”

Tom Fletcher We’ll never know how much this sort of gloating contributed to the epic collapse of the NDP, champion of public sector union members whose pay and benefits make them the new upper class.

But I can tell you the prospects for sparing children from this ideological warfare are not good.

Last week the B.C. Court of Appeal handed down an ivory-tower decision that upheld the “right” of teachers to bring their union demands into the classroom in the form of posters, buttons

and black armbands that to some self-absorbed teachers symbolize the “death” of education.

During the election campaign, The Globe and Mail carried a story on one of those mock elections held in schools around the province. An elementary-level student was quoted as saying she voted against the B.C. Liberals because Clark “caused a teachers’ strike.”

If this kid was talking about the most recent strike, I wonder where she got that idea. In a negotiating performance that was appalling even by BCTF standards, Lambert and her team conducted months of disruptive work-to-rule action before they could even articulate a wage and benefit demand. When they finally did, it was outrageously out of touch with reality.

An indication of how the union’s ruling class wants to conduct itself in the classroom can be

found in the latest issue of the BCTF newsletter to its members. Joanna Larson, president of the Prince Rupert union local, contributes an article headlined: “What kind of citizen do we hope to graduate from our K-12 public schools?”

Larson first quotes the education ministry’s current goals. They include preparing citizens who are “creative, flexible, self-motivated, and who have a positive self-image.” Another goal is citizens who are “skilled and who can contribute to society generally, including the world of work.”

Larson then mocks these goals, as follows: “Essentially, the Ministry of Education has a vision of citizens who will maintain the status quo, not rock the boat, and participate on a superficial level in aspects of political and societal change.

It doesn’t challenge individuals to take direct action against exploitation, marginalization and

violence.”

In case you missed the political message, Larson later asserts: “The educated citizens we graduate from our schools cannot just be content to wear a pink shirt once a year….

Educated, engaged citizens must be willing to take direct action to change and shape our society for the better.”

What is this ghastly “status quo” that must be challenged by “direct action”? In these campus-radical screeds, the final answer is generally the same: capitalism. This call to arms is a blend of the NDP election platform and a rant from the Occupy Vancouver squat of a couple of years ago.

It’s no wonder we hear of students making BCTF picket signs in art class.

Fear underlies international relations—fear of wars, fear of rebellions, fear of reprisals.

And that’s just the political world.

Consider how much of advertising focuses on fear. Fear of looking old. Fear of failure. Fear of looking poor. Fear of boredom. Fear of loneliness.

And ultimately, fear of dying. In a whole page of newspaper obituaries recently, not one person died. They passed away.

They went to be with their Lord. They had an appointment with St. Peter.

Which plants attract butterflies?

Many gardeners love to admire the birds that take up residence, however briefly, in their backyards. Butterflies are a true delight and a symbol of living nature. But they

The first thing to remember when creating a butterfly garden is to avoid

the use of pesticides as much as possible, as butterflies are very sensitive to these products.

Time for disgruntled few to stop bullying Emotional, physical, social, economic freedom To the editor: What has happened to Okanagan Centre?

The idyllic community, that these rebel rousers like to portray their community as, was shattered once again last evening (May 23) at the (Okanagan Centre) Town Hall Meeting.

The opening shouting and bullying tactics of two attendees in an attempt to set their own agenda, rather than the printed one handed out

by Lake Country counsellors, set the tone and pace for the evening.

At times, it was made all but impossible for staff and council members to carry on. It was most disturbing, and left me with a bad taste in my mouth once again.

So much time and effort was spent on “what could have/should have been” (at least

in the opinion of the noisy few) instead of spending more time on moving forward.

The removal of docks and structures along the Greenspace became the crux of the matter for some. They do not seem to be able to accept that there was never any so-called legal “grandfathering clause” for the docks. Check it out if you wish.

Six years ago we all knew (if we wanted to know) that the items would be removed and the beach front would be returned to the public. There should have been no reason for a petition and request to change that by the disgruntled few.

The mandate had been set and voted on and approved. The parks people were merely carrying out their job.

The RUOC dream that some continue to

harbour in their own dreams, was defeated.

No neighbour has a right in this democracy to dictate to another neighbour what style and size of home they can build. That decision lies with the government of the District of Lake Country. Let’s move on.

Thank you to staff and council for their innovative ideas in moving forward. There were some very positive proposals. Now if the rest of the community can just get on board.

We are blessed to live in one of the most beautiful environments in the entire world.

They met behind locked doors, in upper rooms isolated from the street.

And then, one day, something changed. Suddenly those same fearful disciples became fearless. They spoke boldly to crowds. According to the Bible, they even demonstrated in the Temple, confronting the authorities who had crucified their leader.

The real miracle of what Christian churches call Pentecost wasn’t some supernatural phenomenon that people could only describe later as tongues of fire, a mighty wind. The miracle was that a bunch of cowards lost their fear.

Tragically, their successors often exploited fear as a means of exercising power. People were taught to fear eternal punishment in hell, to fear a judgemental God, to fear exclusion from the community.

And sometimes, to fear torture and/or burning for daring to think outside a predefined doctrinal box.

Today, in a time of greater intellectual freedom, we can explore ideas that would have been unthinkable before.

But I don’t think many of us can imagine what it might be like to live without fear.

We can imagine being reckless. We can imagine being brave. But not of living in such a way that we no longer fear dying. Or being robbed.

Or swindled. Or raped. Or injured in an accident.

So we buy insurance.

We lock doors. We hire lawyers to read the fine print on contracts. We choose our friends carefully.

We can’t imagine being totally open—emotionally, physically, socially, and economically—to anyone at all, to anything that happens.

We’re so immersed in fear that we’re afraid of living without fear.

A Day with Dad on the Farm Seniors Centre hosts This poem, A Day with Dad on the Farm, was written by Meiri (Koyama) Itami in 1980, to honour Eijiro Koyama who farmed in the Winfield area in the 1920s.

As certainly as dawn crept over the hills he was awake. No clock rang by Dad’s bed; Only that inner sense of knowing at the barn the cows were waiting to be milked and fed.

But first the kitchen fire was carefully made, Heaped high with wood from the bin beside the door; The huge tea kettle filled, and placed just so there would be water hot for breakfast time and more.

Upstairs I lay, half dozing, half awake, knowing that soon I too must face the day; Then footsteps, and the clank of milk pails came; And I could hear Dad call, “Wake up!” no more delay.

‘Twas quite the same, some toast of homemade bread, and jam, from prunes that grew across the creek.

And milk, and tea, we’d eat together mostly, through summer’s sunny hours, and winters bleak.

The old cream separator’s hum, I hear it now, As round and round, the boys would daily turn; and from the separator’s spouts the streams would flow, Skim milk for calves, and cream for butter’s churn.

This chore, twice daily, we the girls would do, To wash and dry the separator parts Shake out the disks, put up the pails to dry, We did it like all else, with all our hearts.

The fresh turned soil that called for seeding time, And Dad and hired help obeyed that call.

With heart and hands and head, bent to the need They toiled, rejoicing as the seeds would fall.

The love of earth, the love of life itself Was in these men who toiled unselfishly; ‘Til call to lunchtime came, to break their toil, And bring a midday rest, relaxed and free.

Before night milking time, Dad homeward came and laid his tools back in the shed once more.

Then off to milk, the cows must know his steps, with pails in hand he tended to this chore.

We filled the bath with water from the creek, The fire fed with wood we’d gathered ’round.

Dad first, the order never changed, we last.

Then on the steps, pick spears his socks had found.

The day near done, bathed, fed, and time for sleep; A little reading rests the wearied mind, Some apples from the cellar, crispy fresh, Before we leave the toils of day behind.

Day in, day out, the months and years have passed And chapters written thus in Dad’s life span Have yielded life itself to us who come Behind; to do our very best, we must, we can.

The little ups and downs we cannot know, And greater things these pioneers of old faced, solved, and worked to a successful end.

We know so little, so much yet untold.

The paths Dad trod, now dim, the footsteps still; But memory lingers strong in us today; We catch the gleam of a silvered brow held high That dared to face the future, come what may.

Retain your hearing with early screening JANET CODY For many of us, waking up to the sounds of birds chirping is a sure sign of spring.

Perhaps then it’s no surprise that May is designated as Speech and Hearing Month in Canada.

Speech and hearing may seem an unlikely pair at first glance, but learning to speak is usually accompanied by the ability to hear.

In fact, communication skills start to develop as soon as a child is born. Just spend some time around infants and

young children and you’ll be convinced that the first five years are the most critical period for growth. Like little sponges, they soak up stimulation with every sense available!

The key to preventing or overcoming a communication problem is

the early identification of hearing, speech and language disorders.

Without early screening, many babies with hearing loss go undetected because it’s not easy to identify a hearing loss just by watching SEE HEARING A8

AGM before quiet summer Lake Country Seniors Centre is starting to wind down for the summer. Everyone was very busy and are expressing that they have enjoyed their time being busy. It is a great place to meet with friends and socialize during our times spent together whether it be a group function, planned functions or lunch, it is nice to know someone cares.

The annual general meeting on June 5 at 1 p.m. at the Centre welcomes everyone. If you would like to know how and what the centre is about this is the place to be.

The directors will be in attendance and would be happy to answer any questions you have or if you have some new ideas we could use to utilize the Centre more we would appreciate hearing them.

There will be refreshment served and most of the groups have members present if you would like to speak with them.

We are going to be starting a couple of new exercise groups for seniors to help people keep in shape for the summer.

• Boomer Blast will be on Tuesdays from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., which is more physical, Fridays 3:45 to 4:45 p.m.

• Get Up & Go from Tuesday 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. and Friday 5 to 6 p.m. this is some chair exercises for those that have more trouble moving.

Also, there will be a walking group starting every Tuesday morning at 8 o’clock from the centre for those who like to walk with someone.

And some good news: The government is offering a program in which you can participate in an exercise group and they will reimburse you $50 towards the programs you register with.

To get these funds you must have a prescription from your doctor and a receipt from the group you participate in, fill in the form and submit it to the government and they will send you your money.

This is a great incentive and you should take advantage of it because it doesn’t happen often.

As stated before it is important for us to stay active for our health.

If you have been around the centre in the past couple of weeks you will notice that there are some upgrades being done. The Rose Garden, The Garden Bench has been moved and the bed where it was has been straightened out and the ramp has been redone.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Nick our maintenance fellow and the rest of the

district staff that have been doing these jobs.

They are also going to be doing some upgrades inside the centre during the month of August, including painting the ceiling and walls and redoing the floors. This will brighten up the centre and should look good.

We are looking forward to it.

With this happening the centre will be closed for the month of August but we look forward to seeing you in September.

We would hope that you look into using the centre in the fall, everything starts back up then and most begin right after Labor Day weekend.

We would like to see more use out of the games equipment that is downstairs, pool table, shuffle board, ping pong and air hockey.

Have a great, happy and healthy summer and we will keep you posted as to what is happening in September.

He is excellent walking on his harness & likes to meet other dogs & approaches them in a very friendly manner. Rocky is a very smart & confident dog & is willing to please. He loves both people & long walks.

Rocky already responds well to some basic hand signals, so we believe he has had some of that training in the past. He is truly wonderful. Detoxify your body to put it on the path to good health

D

etoxification is what your body does naturally to neutralize, transform and get rid of unwanted toxins.

Spring and autumn are the best times of year to detoxify.

Why do we need to detoxify?

Toxins surround us.

Detoxifying helps our bodies cope with the onslaught of toxins and stress, which are an unavoidable part of modern day life.

There are external tox-

food; heavy metals in our teeth and in the fish we eat; cosmetics we place on our skin; and the water we drink.

We use more than 50, 000 chemicals in our daily living. Many of which the detrimental effects are unknown, and become exponentially dangerous when we harbour more than two, 10 or 20 at the same time.

There are internal toxins too. The most important source of internal toxicity is from improper gut function, from con-

stipation, antibiotic use (from drugs or meat and dairy), persistent bacteria from processed foods, chemically treated foods and genetically modified (GMO) foods.

These all create overgrowth of yeast, parasites and/or bad bacteria.

Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is now a clinical diagnosis for such toxicity.

When our detoxification systems become overloaded and start to fail, we store much of these toxins in our fatty

tissues as well as important organs.

These toxins and synthetic molecules are a large contributor to inflammation, chronic disease and even cancer.

Toxicity is a problem because it: • causes inflammation • interferes with our hormones—there is an epidemic of low thyroid and infertility • can attach to our chromosomes—GMOfoods • weakens, even disables our immune sys-

tem, predisposing us to cancer.

What are the common signs and symptoms suggesting we should detoxify?

There are many. Common symptoms include bloating and gas, but also something I like to call “gut-rot,” constipation, headaches, skin breakouts, eczema, joint pain, and the inability to lose weight.

What many people don’t realize is that your gut is your second brain—the majority of chemicals and neurotransmitters are processed in the gut.

So additional symptoms such as foggy thinking, severe anxiety and mild depression can all benefit from a detoxification program.

What organs are involved in detoxification?

We need hundreds of enzymes, vitamins, and other molecules to help rid the body of unwanted waste products and chemicals.

Although the majority of work is done by the liver and the gastrointestinal tract—the kidneys, lungs, lymphatic system and skin are all involved in the complex infrastructure of the detoxification system.

How do we detoxify?

If you have a health condition, take certain medications or it is your first time attempting to detoxify, I highly recommend doing so under the guidance of a naturopathic physician.

A good detoxification program will involve four basic principles and last

several weeks.

Removing common irritants in the diet like gluten, sugar, dairy, caffeine, etc.

Also a sweating program (infrared sauna, exercise, yoga, etc.) to remove toxins via the skin.

Replacing digestive enzymes, fibre and herbal support for the liver and gut.

Reinoculating the body with good bacteria following the cleanse.

Repairing the gut with healing nutrients and vitamins depleted from chronic toxicity.

External benefits can include weight loss, less aches and pains, clear skin, less puffiness and resolution of previous symptoms.

Internal benefits can include increased energy, a clear head with better focus, improved liver functioning and less abdominal bloating and gas.

It also provides a mental cleanse for our negative thoughts–when we are resentful and angry, we carry rage and hurt in our body.

Address harmful insect bites before they become too serious

ith our patients running around in nature, naked and fascinated by all things moving, insect bite allergic reactions are a familiar presentation for vets.

Many of these unfortunate encounters between the family pet and the insect, happen on the daily walk or even in the back yard.

Our desired area of living, with the hot weather and variety of greenery and fruits growing everywhere, is also popular among these pests.

The list of the potential harmful insects is too long to mention in full, the most common pests that are affecting house pets are—bees, wasps, ants, biting flies and spi-

An allergic reaction is actually the body’s defence reaction, that got out of control.

When the pet’s body comes into contact with allergenic insect, the body recognizes it as a foreign material, triggering the immune system to react to this “invader.”

Why this reaction goes overboard, impacting the pets in such a tremendous way, is still unclear.

Due to pets’ nature to explore things with their nose, most of the reaction usually starts with a significant swelling of the face, usually around the muzzle, eyes and even the ears.

The swelling is typically accompanied by intense itchiness and redness of the skin.

The skin redness is easily noticeable in the inner side of the ears, where the skin is apparent.

The reaction may also manifest systemically, affecting the whole body.

This case is known as Urticaria and it is characterized by eruption

of skin lumps, initially close to the bite site, then spreading over the body.

These lumps are easily visible in slick coated dogs, however may go unnoticed if covered by long hair.

Beside the dramatic physical symptoms of the face swelling and the skin lumps, pet owners will easily notice the mental changes in their pet.

This kind of allergic reaction is very irritating and accompanied by signs of restlessness and distress.

The pet will typically rub itself intensively and cry or yelp continuously.

Beside the great inconvenience to the pet, other more serious complications may arise. Severe swelling of the face

and neck may lead to breathing difficulties.

This complication is not very common, however, it is important to be aware of it because the outcome can be tragic.

Brachiocephalic breeds, such as pugs, boxers, Pekingeses, Persian cats and more, that have a “squashed” faces are at most risk to be seriously impacted.

These breeds have such crowded throats, they can barely breathe when healthy and any acute allergic reaction in short-faced pets should be considered a potential emergency.

Many pets owners are not in a hurry to go to the vet. If you will look online, you’ll find many DIY advices on these kind of reactions.

I have to admit that I am not a fan of any DIY attempts when it comes to pets. Many people will go straight to human antihistamines (Benadryl).

I don’t find this medication helpful when it is given on its own, let alone the dose adjustments from human to pets and the side effects that may arise with errors in that area.

Most cases of insect-borne allergies are fairly easy to treat if other severe complications have not occurred.

Most veterinarians will suppress the allergic reaction by using steroids either on their own or by incorporating steroids with antihistamines.

In most simple cases of allergic reactions, a

single treatment, or a short course over few days of treatment is sufficient in completely eliminating all the symptoms.

In severe cases, where there is a potential life threatening complication, the pet may require to be hospitalized for an intensive treatment, luckily these cases are not the majority. In any event, if your pet is showing any of the mentioned symptoms,I strongly recommend you to seek a veterinary assessment which will restore your pets comfort and the peace in your house.

Best to prevent workplace injuries before they happen and you need a physio

A

s a physiotherapist, I assess and treat injuries that occur in the workplace. These can be sudden (acute), or gradually over time (overuse).

Overuse injuries come from repeated stresses that cause micro-damage of muscles, ligaments, or joints. Over time the micro-damage turns larger, and pain and weaknesses become apparent. Overuse injuries are quite common, difficult to diagnose, but relatively easy to prevent.

Any job comes with some degree of risk of injury. Knowing what your risks are, and working together with your employer or organization to minimize these risks is important for keeping your body happy and work-ready.

When possible, look at your work environment to see if anything is within your control to be changed. I will use physiotherapy as an example: There are times when I can modify my environment in order to make a task easier on my

Keeping You Fit body. I can raise and lower the treatment table, or my stool on which I’m sitting, or in some cases I can use equipment that is ergonomically friendly.

Other, the environment is not ideal, but also not in our power to modify. This is when you need to think of your body mechanics—the way you use your body to perform a task. Here are some general tips, from head to toe, of ways you can keep good body mechanics. This list is not exhaustive so it is important to consider each task you have to do individually, and what risks may be involved.

Head and neck: a

common posture that is a big no-no is the forward head posture where the chin juts forward and hinging occurs about one vertebra in the lower neck. Any time you are in an upright position, keep a nice gentle chin tuck, with the back of your neck long.

Upper body: the other common poor posture is the rounded shoulder posture. When in this position too long, the muscles in the front of the chest get tight, and muscles in the back get long and weak. Also avoid hunching your upper back, which can also contribute to a forward head posture. Keep your shoulders pulled back, with your chest open and proud.

Arms: working repetitively above shoulder height can put you at risk of an injury called ‘impingement’ in the shoulder. When it is possible, avoid having your hands overhead, or above shoulder height, especially if lifting. This can mean using a step if you’re trying to reach

high, or finding ways to better position yourself around your task. Avoid repetitive reaching away from the body; if it is possible, put your body closer to where you’re working.

Hands and fingers: if your job involves a lot of bending of your wrist or fingers, gripping or grasping, it is important to stretch those tired muscles, and to strengthen the opposing muscle groups to balance it out.

If you work at a computer, look to see what your wrist position is at the keyboard or the mouse.

Ideally, they shouldn’t be bent up toward you too far, and the bottom of your wrist shouldn’t sit on a hard surface for a prolonged time.

Low back: Lifting techniques and proper sitting posture can make a big difference in low back pain! If you sit a lot, try to support the normal curve of your spine either through a ‘lumbar support’ or a rolled towel.

For those who lift during the work day, remember the following im-

portant points. Keep the load you’re lifting close to your body. If what you are lifting is below waist height get into a lunge, or a squat position and stick your bottom out like you’re going to sit in a chair. This helps to preserve a ‘neutral spine’— which is slightly arched.

Lastly with regards to lifts, or picking anything up / putting anything down of any weight, avoid twisting and bending simultaneously.

Legs and feet: avoid twisting your body when you have a foot, or both, planted. Wear footwear that is supportive, and appropriate for your job.

If you have been prescribed orthotics, ensure you wear them while working, to help support your feet and legs.

If sitting, change up your position: try not to sit all your time with legs crossed, and if you do cross your legs, try to balance how long each is the leg on top.

If you do notice new pain or weakness, attend to it as soon as possible.

What causes heartworm infection in dogs?

Heartworm disease or dirofilariasis is a serious and potentially fatal disease. It is caused by a blood-borne parasite known as Dirofilaria immitis. Adult heartworms are found in the heart and adjacent large blood vessels of infected dogs. The parasite requires the mosquito as an intermediate host before it can complete its life cycle in the dog. The life cycle begins when a female mosquito bites an infected dog and ingests the microfilariae. The microfilariae develop further for 10 - 30 days in the mosquito’s gut and then enter its mouthparts. The infective larvae enter the dog’s body when the mosquito bites the dog.

They migrate into the bloodstream and move to the heart and adjacent blood vessels where they become adults. Canine heartworm disease occurs all over the world. The highest numbers of reported cases are still within 150 miles of the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean coastlines and along the Mississippi River. However, the disease is spreading and is now found in many regions of the United States, including California, Oregon and Washington. In Canada, the disease is problematic in areas where mosquitoes are prevalent, such as along waterways and coastlines in many provinces. The greatest number of cases in Canada occurs around the southern Great Lakes.

I heard that an eye exam can pick up certain diseases in the body. Is this true?

It sure is! There are many diseases and problems with the body that can be picked up during a routine eye examination. The eye is the one place in your body where blood vessels and tissue can be observed without any x-rays, incisions, injections or other invasive techniques.

All we have to do is look though your pupil!

Corneal arcus, a white deposit around the edge of the cornea, can indicate elevated cholesterol levels in people under the age of 40. Diabetes and high blood pressure affect the blood vessels throughout your body, including the ones in your eyes, causing small hemorrhages, swelling and other changes to your retinal tissue. Optic neuritis, an inflammation of the optic nerve that connects the eye to the brain, is often the initial manifestation of multiple sclerosis. Brain tumors can also be detected with an eye exam as they can often cause double vision or papilledema, a condition where the optic nerves of both eyes become swollen. These are only a few of the many systemic and ocular diseases that can be diagnosed with a simple eye examination.

Will Canada’s own Rocket Man inspire the next generation?

O

n July 21, 1969 Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon.

That same year, in every neighbourhood in the country, kids would tell you they wanted to grow up and be an astronaut.

It was a career everyone was talking about.

But the space industry changed after that and many of those kids moved on into other professions, except for Chris Hadfield, who was nine-years-old when the famous moonwalk occurred.

He obviously never gave up on his dream and showed us all that a kid from Canada who wanted to be an astronaut could do just that.

So what does it take to be an astronaut?

Years ago you had to be either American or Russian but that doesn’t

seem to matter as much these days.

Based on what astronauts do, it is a profession that requires a combination of understanding science and engineering, in both theory and application, along with the ability and desire to fly very fast air-

Among Gilpin’s other accomplishments: He was a finalist in the 2010 Write Bloody Press manuscript competition, the winner of the Vancouver’s 2009 CBC Poetry Face-off and the 2011 Vancouver Individual Poetry Slam Cham-

This is why most people who go into the field can stand a lot of rides at the amusement park and usually start in the air force and shift between flight training and university.

After spending some time in his youth as a cadet, Hadfield joined the Canadian Armed Forces after he graduated from high school.

Later on he enrolled in the Royal Military College and graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering.

Although he got a PUZZLE NO. 668his university education, applied education comes from a number of dis-

tinct jet training opportunities through the Canadian Forces. This included flight experience in the 410 Tactical Fighter Operational Training Squadron, Canadair CF-116 Freedom Fighter, and the McDonnell Douglas CF-18 Hornet.

Opportunities opened up for him when he went to the United States and attended the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School and then in the early 1990s enrolled in the University of Tennessee Space Institute. From this school he graduated with a masters degree in aviation systems.

It was this combination of education and training that helped Hadfield when he was chosen to be one of four Canadians assigned by the Canadian Space Agency (CSP) to NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) in Houston.

His career with CSP and NASA has been varied and culminated with the opportunity to be the first Canadian commander of the International Space Station in

which he led Expedition 35 leaving Earth on December 19, 2012 and returning just last week on May 13, 2013.

He captured us online by using social media to bring outer space into our lives way beyond the grainy black and white film footage of Neil Armstrong’s walk on the moon almost 24 years ago.

Hadfield ended his journey with a welldone version of David Bowie’s Space Oddity—if Armstrong had the same opportunity in 1969 he might have considered the same song which Bowie wrote after watching Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: Space Odyssey.

Few of us will forget Chris Hadfield, just like so many of us kids from the 1960s who never forgot Neil Armstrong.

Learn about bats to reduce risk of rabies Long days and summer vacations means it’s time to get ready for every eventuality.

Planning to do some spring cleaning? Bringing your summer gear out of storage?

Heading to the great outdoors to open the cabin?

It’s important to know that activities like these can result in contact with bats, the primary carrier of the rabies virus in B.C. Rabies is a very serious disease that affects the nervous system. If not treated in time, rabies is almost always fatal.

Last year, 39 people in the region were treated for potential exposure to rabies.

Treatment, involving a two week long period of vaccinations, must be administered as soon as possible after exposure.

“Between four and eight per cent of the bats that are tested after coming into contact with people are found to have the rabies virus,” said Jennifer Jeyes, communicable disease specialist with Interior Health.

“Most bat-human encounters occur when bats get into houses or summer cabins, usually

through open windows, doors, chimneys, or narrow cracks.

“Attics are a favourite bat refuge. If you come into contact with live or dead bats, it is very important to avoid touching them.”

Interior Health advises that all contact with bats should be taken seriously.

“Anyone who has come into contact with a bat should call the local public health unit or their doctor right away even if you can’t see bite marks or scratches,” said Jeyes.

“Bats have tiny sharp teeth and claws, so scratches or bites may not be visible but could still be there.

“People should not wait for symptoms to appear. Get checked out as soon as possible—early treatment is crucial to prevent the disease from progressing.”

Interior Health offers these tips to protect yourself:

PREVENTION:

Do not touch live or dead bats. Parents should tell their children not to play with or touch bats.

Make your home or cabin “bat proof.” Keep doors and windows

closed, make sure window screens don’t have any holes, and keep the attic area free of bats by keeping all vents properly screened and by closing off other openings.

If you find a live bat in a room of your home, open the window and close interior doors until the bat leaves.

Seek professional bat-control advice (from a pest control or wildlife specialist) if your home or workplace is inhabited by bats.

Avoid locations or activities where bats are likely to be found (e.g., caves).

If you have a pet dog, cat, or ferret, make sure they are vaccinated regularly against rabies. Pets that were born and raised in B.C. pose a very low risk of transmitting rabies to humans; however, vaccinating your pets will protect them from rabies.

IF BITTEN OR SCRATCHED:

Thoroughly wash the wounds with soap and water.

Contact your local public health unit or family doctor immediately.

Call a wildlife or pest control company to capture the bat. If trying to

capture the bat yourself, avoid contact by wearing leather gloves, a hat, long sleeves and pants.

Safely contain the bat in a secure covered container to prevent others from being exposed. Keep the bat in a safe location until Public Health can arrange to pick it up and test it for rabies.

TRAVELING ABROAD:

In B.C., bats carry the rabies virus and other animals are only rarely infected. In other parts of the world rabies can be carried by other species.

Be aware of the risk of rabies in the country you are visiting. If you were bitten by an animal and started on the rabies vaccine, keep all documentation you were provided.

It will need to be reviewed by Public Health when you return home.

Note the type of clinic or hospital you visited.

This information will be used by Public Health to determine if you received the same standard of protection that you would have received at home.

Don’t carelessly toss your cigarette butts After receiving several recent reports of people tossing lit cigarette butts outside their vehicles, local RCMP want to remind the public of the dangers associated with this kind of careless act even when the Okanagan heat doesn’t seem extreme.

The police say such complaints will be treated “very seriously,” with a follow-up investigation carried out when there is sufficient evidence to do so.

“Time may have faded the memories of some but for those who lost their homes in the Okanagan Mountain Park fire of 2003 or in

the wildfires since, those memories will never fade,” said an RCMP news release.

“Where grounds exist, the RCMP will enforce fines under the Motor Vehicle Act and the Wildfire Act. Fines under the Wildfire Act may exceed $5,000 and persons found responsible for causing a fire may be subject to a fine of up to $1 million and/or up to three years imprisonment.”

If you see someone toss a lit cigarette butt out of their car window, record the vehicle licence plate number and notify police.

ROBERTSON, DOROTHY LILLIAN Loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother and Sister.

Dorothy Robertson passed away on May 21, 2013 at the age of 91. She is survived by her son Don (Cheryl), three grandchildren Sean, Kira (Croft), Athena and one great-grandchild Rykker. She is greatly missed by her two sisters Jean (Ray) Adams, Marg (Jerry) Smith and two brothers Gord (Mary) Amos, Jack Amos (Sharleen) and previous sister in law Gail Amos. She is also survived by Clare’s brother Keith (Lillian) Robertson and sister-in-law Jean Robertson.

Dorothy was predeceased by her loving husband of 57 years Clare Robertson, and her three sisters and their spouses Joyce (Jack), Beatrice (Al), sister Frances and by Clare’s sister Dorothy (Ted), brother Hugh.Dorothy touched the lives of many throughout her lifetime and was an active member of the United Church. She enjoyed curling, baking, gardening and hosting family dinners on special occasions. Dorothy lived in her own home independently up until her last days.

She was able to live life to the fullest, savouring and cherishing every moment that was presented to her.

No service by request. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Winfield United Church in Dorothy’s name at 3751 Woodsdale Road, Winfield, BC V4V 1X2.

Council has been asked to approve a Temporary Permit to allow a daycare, preschool and out-of-school care facility.

Notice to Property Owners Property Tax Notices for the District of Lake Country have been mailed. If you are the registered owner of property within the District of Lake Country and have not received your Property Tax Notice for 2013, please contact the Finance Department at (250) 766-5650.

Please note that current taxes and rates are due before 6:00 pm, Tuesday July 2nd. Property owners have the following tax payment options:  In person at Municipal Hall;  Banks;  Internet/Telephone Banking;  Mail – (mail your payment early with a July 3, 2012 post dated cheque)

A Temporary Permit may be used for a maximum period of three years, and may be renewed once. After that time they may reapply for a new Temporary Permit.

Council may specify conditions under which the Permit may be carried on.

Municipal Hall hours are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday and will be open for extended hours on Tuesday, July 2nd from 8:30 am to 6:00 pm.
