Quadders gather near Mapes Hall to search and raise awareness for Madison Scott.

The search for Maddy continues Sam Redding Omineca Express The second On the Trail Poker Ride for Maddy took place on Saturday, May 25. The ride happened on the anniversary of Madison Scott’s disappearance two years ago. The ride took place near Mapes Hall and covered the area near Maddy’s disappearance.

The surrounding community gathered in groups of ATVs,

dirt bikes, on horse and on foot to search for any signs of Maddy.

Although finding any evidence was first in everyone’s mind, just raising awareness was enough for the ride’s organizers.

Maddy was last seen at 3 a.m. on Saturday, May 28, 2011 at a party near Hogsback Lake, 25 kilometres south of Vanderhoof. She was last seen at around 3:00 a.m on the Saturday morning.

Police located her tent and white Ford F-150 truck but her

keys and cellphone have yet to be found.

Investigators with the North District Major Crime Unit continue to actively investigate Maddy’s disappearance. We believe that someone has information concerning Maddy’s disappearance, and we continue to hope that they will come forward to help us determine what happened.

Sierra Sayles and the Rough n’ Tough Riders Sierra Sayles, along with Ashley Ferguson and Mackenzie Jensen are an amazing entertainment act for rodeos, fairs, or any charity event.

They will be performing in Vanderhoof during the Equifair on Friday, June 7 at 7 p.m. and again on Saturday, June 8 at noon.

All three riders trained with famous Jerri Duce Philips who runs a trick riding school and has trained riders for six years.

Sayles and Jensen are only 10 years old and they have had crowds on the edge of their seats as they race around the arena performing such tricks as the stroud layout, the hippodrome stand, suicide drag and the side backbend.

Sayles, Calgary, has wanted to be a trick rider since she was two years old. She grew up around rodeo and has a background in gymnastics and ballet. She started performing at age six and already has several shows under her belt. In Jerri’s words: “her trick riding is flawless.”

Mackenzie Jensen, also 10 years old, rides her own horse Tess, who she trained herself. She started trick riding at age five and loves riding double with her friends. She and Ashley Ferguson make up the Rough n’ Tough trick riding duo.

Furgeson is from Barrhead, Alberta but she was born in Manitoba on a horse ranch and has been involved with horses all her life. She started riding six years ago and has been in shows all over Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Her mount, Madonna, is a 10 year old bay quarter

horse mare that she trained to trick ride.

The girls will be available to handout autographs at the end of the performance.

North Central Zone High school Championships place medals. Many of these athletes will be moving on to provincials in Langley on May 31 and June 1.

The winners included: Emma Floris, in grade nine, broke the school record by achieving first in the 100

metre, the 200 metre, and long jump. She qualified for the provincials in the 100 and 200 metre.

Julia Steinebach, grade 11, qualified for provincials in the 3,000 metre run and placed third overall for the senior girls.

Matthew Ebert, broke the record in discus, got first in javelin, shot put, and second in hammer throw. He qualified for provincials in discus.

James DeVos, grade eight, came first in discus and long jump and third in javelin and 100 metre.

He qualified for provincials in discus.

Charlie Borek, grade eight, came first in 1,500 metre, the steeple chase, and in 3,000 metre. He qualified for provincials in 3,000 metre.

Alexander Nemethy, grade 10, came first in 1,500 metre, 3,000 metre, and 800 metre runs. He qualified for all three in provincials.

For the relays, in the 4x100 metre relay the girls achieved third and the boys got first breaking the record. In the 4x400 metre relay, the senior girls won first place and the junior boys won second.

Irradiated beef kills bacteria

Vanderhoof district council recently laid out its plan for the city in terms of road and

Beef farmers may have a new technology to use to treat beef and help prevent E. coli, and that technology is irradiation.

Irradiated food has been in use since 1966 when astronauts would take pasteurized and irradiated food into space to prevent food borne illnesses.

Currently, only spices, flour, onions and potatoes are approved for irradiation in Canada.

Research into irradiated food provided by the Beef Cattle Research Council has shown that it does not cause meat to become radioactive nor does it have any effect on the nutrients within the food. This is provided the rads are used in low doses, in high doses of radiation flavour is affected.

Richard Holley at the University of Manitoba and Alex Gill from Health Canada have been researching whether it is possible to hit beef with a very minimal amount of radiation and still kill all the harmful bacteria.

What they eventually found is that, in beef purposely given a million times more bacteria than normally found, the low dose of radiation eliminated 99% of the E. coli and 99% of the Salmonella. All without affecting taste, aroma or texture of the beef in any way.

The work on Clark Avenue is expected to cost about $1.3 million.

This one road has completely deteriorated due to a number of reasons.

The money will cover asphalt paving, reconstruction, water main upgrades and storm drain systems.

“Clark Avenue is a very steep road,” said Mayor Gerry Thiessen.

“This past year we’ve had a fairly major construction project up there with BC Hydro working on a transformer substation. And now we’ve found that there is a number of springs along that hillside that are washing out that road” The amount of money and effort that has to go into repairing the road has had a couple councillors asking that at what

point does it become not worth it to take on a task of this magnitude.

Another major project in Vanderhoof is the construction of a new water tower within the next five to six years.

“The tower that we have currently was brought in when the Kenney dam was built back in the late 40s maybe early 50s so its pretty old,” said Thiessen. “We had it assessed last year and we were told at that time that we had a six to ten year window.”

A new water tower would cost $2.9 million so the plan for the city, as Mayor Thiessen put it, is “to work together with the provincial or federal government, hopefully both!” and receive funding for infrastructure within the next two or three years.

Shipping containers getting contained Sam Redding Omineca Express Vanderhoof city council discussed options on how to deal with the proliferation of shipping containers in recent years.

“These containers are showing up in the community and they’re showing up on our main streets,” said Vanderhoof Mayor Gerry Thiessen.

“They’re starting to be intrusive on the community.”

The main problem is dealing with the aesthetics of the containers, they’re unsightly, said many of the councillors, and Vanderhoof hasn’t any specific bylaws to deal with them.

“They’re not something that we want to see totally outlawed but we want to have some regulation as to how they’re used and where they’re put,” said Mayor Thiessen.

The mayor admits he owns one himself but stated at council that no one except him and his family have ever seen it.

Most of the councillors seemed to believe the containers should remain hidden from public view or disguised in some way, unless they’re temporarily part of a construction site.

Any decision on how to deal with the containers has been deferred until the Official Community Plan, which was to be finished last Christmas but now it will be Tuesday, June 4.

In Prince George, shipping containers are de-

fined the same as sheds or outdoor storage and therefore require screening. Their bylaws also state that no shipping containers, cargo containers or rail cars are permitted in residential, commercial and certain public parks.

NVSS students ‘Voluntour’ in Ecuador Sam Redding Omineca Express Anna Pye, media arts teacher at NVSS, and Kathy Russell, took six NVSS students on a trip to Ecuador last March.

Their “voluntour” as it is called, was done to assist the community in building better bathrooms and garden facilities.

These communities have very limited access to education, water, economic opportunities, health care

services, and food resources.

“We went to the Chimborazo province, there was a small school of 500 students and they only had 5 bathrooms, and the bathrooms were really run down,” said Anna Pye. “And they had no running water in the whole school. They had one tap outside that the kids would get water from but it wasn’t very nice.”

On May 21st, members of the St. John Hospital Auxiliary Society accepted a cheque from Corleen McNolty and Michelle Roberge, co-chairs of Vanderhoof Community for Kids (VCFK), the fundraising group in Vanderhoof for BC Children’s Hospital. VCFK hosts several fundraisers each year, two of which see 50% of the funds go to the purchase of pediatric equipment at St. Johns Hospital.

Over the past three years VCFK has given $24,589.88 to the St. John Hospital Auxiliary. These funds have gone toward the purchase of a Cub Pediatric Crib, two newborn bath basins and two fold-out chairs that double as beds for parents when they need to stay overnight in the hospital with their sick or injured children. All the money donated to the St. John Hospital Auxiliary from VCFK comes from businesses and individuals in Vanderhoof. The VCFK and St. John Hospital Auxiliary Society extend a huge thank you to the community for the continued generous support of these groups and their efforts to help children in our community and province.

Local rider for Cops for Cancer Sam Redding Omineca Express Building on the success of last year’s Cops for Cancer, Vanderhoof’s Sharon Unger will be riding again to raise money and awareness.

“I heard about it for a few years in a row and I wanted to ride,” said Unger. “I lost my dad to cancer so I wanted to give back to the cancer society so I signed up to be the medic.”

Sharon managed to raise $14,500 last year and her team raised $321,000. $1,200 of those dollars are from collecting bottles alone.

Prior to last year’s ride, the longest she ever rode was about 40 kilometres she said. But last year the participants rode 150 kilometres a day, going from Prince George to Prince Rupert.

The life of a rider on the road begins with a 7 a.m. breakfast, then a

visit to the nearest school of a child dealing with cancer. The riders encourage the kids to speak out about their disease and hopefully reduce bullying.

“Cops for cancer started because one kid was getting bullied because he had no hair,” said Unger. “So one of the RCMP, he got a bunch of his colleagues and they shaved his head and visited the kid at school saying ‘bald is the new cool.’”

The kids also get to ride in police cruisers or monster trucks and hopefully have an all round great day.

“The community was very supportive last year and I hope that they get on board and support me again.

Hopefully, we can raise just as much money or more.”

This year’s route will start at Dawson Creek and end in Williams Lake, an 832 kilometre trip over seven days.

Project Firefighter 2013

"It's hard but it's fun, and that's what it's all about," said Darren Carpenter, to the assembled students.

Carpenter is the School District 91 coordinator for careers and trades, and the students he was addressing were participants in Project Firefighter 2013, which gives Grade 12 students from Vanderhoof, Fort St. James, Fraser Lake and Burns Lake the opportunity for some pretty tough firefighter training.

The students are fully immersed in a structural firefighter department scenario. The students spend time in the fire hall doing classroom theory on firefighting, clean gear and the fire hall, prepare their meals like fulltime municipal fire departments normally would, and are given live-fire scenarios at the Fort St. James Fire Training Centre.

Poisoning weeds Poison is Poison By now the readers of these articles may understand that anything you do to the world eventually affects us, this is truer so when done in close proximity to us.

Spring is here and all of natures’ wonders are flourishing and multiplying!

We are so lucky to live in a place where we have so much nature all around us. With our wonderful community settings, we see wonderful flowers and plants lying in their beds, a wide variety of colors, shapes and sizes, as pleasing to the eye as to the nose for many! One thing that seems to be the bane of many a gardener are the notorious “weeds”. You may never hear a herbalist refer to them as such, and may be surprised that dandelions, nettle and yarrow are prized garden material!

Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, and usefulness of a plant can trump the prettiest of blossoms!

It always brings a smile to my face to know that there are such wonders naturally growing in peoples yards, yet the desired results are a green ‘plant free’ grass. Aesthetics differ for everyone! I have heard stories of neighbours trying to be friendly and throwing on some weed killer onto a plant that was being grown on purpose! Weed killers are the topic I’d like to touch on briefly today! Remember to look at what you use (if you do) and read the ingredients, see how it works. Remember that animals and pets can ingest sprayed products, or contact on skin can spread and get onto others or cause allergic reactions.

Most of all realize that most chemicals make their way into the soil, and if you intend on growing any food to eat you may be contaminating future food plots. Remember to wear proper safety gear and avoid inhaling your sprays.

Try to look into natural alternatives, digging out the root, removing the plant top before it goes to seed. Or if you have great soil, look at what you have to check out its edibility?!

Did you know that tulip petals make a wonderful & colorful addition to a salad? (Just make sure they are not sprayed or grown in contaminated soil) Wouldn’t it be great to know all the soil here was pesticide, herbicide and chemical free?! Maybe one day we would all know the benefits of our ‘weeds’ and have colorful and full gardens! Good luck with all your spring gardening!

Reunion of three pioneer families

In 1913, three families made extended families, continue to the journey north from Vancou- reside in the area.

The Gilberts and the Reids were old friends in Nova Scotia in the 1800s. They were shipbuilders but as ships started to be built out of metal and life became less about sailing and more about traveling by

motor, they decided to start a new life elsewhere.

“My grandfather was a carpenter shipbuilder,” said Pat Griffith, a descendant of the Armishaws. “Silas Gilbert was a steamfitter, and he and my grandfather built many many of the old bridges in this area.”

The Armishaws came west to get away from the coal-mining industry. The 1891 Springhill Mining Disaster left 125 miners dead, including Griffith’s grandmother’s two brothers.

New equestrian drill team for Equifair Submitted A new local equestrian drill team is gearing up to perform this summer for Vanderhoof.

The Northern Country Girls Drill Team started up in October 2012 after a lot of interest in Vanderhoof to start a team.

Around 20 girls came out to try for the team and about a dozen girls were chosen right at the start for the first ever Vanderhoof Equestrian Drill team.

These girls have been practicing since November and December 2012, twice a week for six months.

On Tuesday, May 14th as part of the McLeod PAC Farm to School program, buddy classes got together and each student worked with their buddy to prepare and decorate their milk jugs. They filled them with soil, and then planted their choice of seeds; carrots, cucumbers, lettuce, spinach, radish, and onions.

John Braithwaite January 9, 1933 – May 19, 2013 The family of John Braithwaite regretfully announce his death in the early hours of May 19th.

John passed away peacefully with family by his side after a brief illness.

John was predeceased by his parents John and Sarah Braithwaite; three sisters: Margaret Brain, Mary Harrison, Ann Nelson; brother-in-law Ernie Harrison; nephews: John Harrison, Victor Brain, and Gordon Brain.

John is survived by his nieces: Margie Ciccone, Barbara Harrison, (Jerry), Judy Harrison, and Gina Nelson; nieces-in-law Jeannine Brain & Paulette Brain & nephew Len Nelson. John is also survived by great nephews & nieces, cousins in England and many life-long friends, in particular his dear supportive friends Rod & Lucy Weber and family of Fraser Lake.

A celebration of John’s life will be held in the Anglican Church in Fraser Lake on Saturday, June 1st 2013 at 11a.m. followed by a reception in the Royal Canadian Legion Hall.

Obituaries

Sept. 19, 1923 - April 29, 2013

Paddy was born on September 19, 1923 in Londonderry, Ireland. As a young man, he fought in WWII and later immigrated to Canada where he met and married Muriel in October of 1959. Paddy was a loving and devoted husband to Muriel until she passed away in April of 1995 from Alzheimers.

Paddy was passionate about several things in life. He was dedicated to St. Wilfred’s Anglican Church in Fraser Lake, and was proud to serve as a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 50 years. He had a great love for the outdoors, hunting, and especially fishing!

Paddy passed away peacefully at Mill Site Lodge on April 29th with family by his side. He will be fondly remembered, and his Irish humour will be missed by many.

A service will be held in Fraser Lake at a later date.

Happy fishing Paddy!
