What are your needs? Thinking about housing arrangements for the future can be a stressful, emotional topic for both you and your family. It may feel easier to put off thinking about it until later, however the earlier you face your specific issues, the more choices and control you will have over your future. Learn about the different types of senior housing and what choices may be best for you. Planning for your future Aging is a time of adaptation and changes. Planning for the future will make sure your needs, or the needs of a loved one are met. This may mean moving to into a retirement housing facility with support options on site. When planning ahead, be sure to consider the needs you might have in the future: ◗ Physical or medical needs. As you age, you may need some help with activities of daily living. This could range from hous keeping and meal preparation to more personal help with medications, bathing and toileting. You or a loved one may also need increasing help with medical needs that could arise from a sudden condition such as a heart attack, stroke, or a more gradual condition that slowly needs more care with time. ◗ Social needs. As you age, your social circles more than likely will change. Friends or family may not be as close by. They may have even moved or sadly passed away. You want to make sure that you continue to have opportunities for maintaining and or making new friendships. If you become housebound, you quickly become isolated which can have negative effects on your mental/emotional health. Understanding senior housing options There is wide range of housing options available to seniors from staying in your own home to specialized facilities that provide round-the-clock nursing care. The names of the different types of housing options can sometimes be confusing. The terminology can even vary from region to region. The primary difference will be in the amount of care provided for activities of daily living and for medical care. When researching a housing option, make sure it covers your required level of care and that you understand exactly the facilities offered and the costs involved. Independent living Independent living is a general name for any housing arrangement designed exclusively for seniors. Other terms include retirement communities, retirement homes, senior housing, and senior apartments. These may be apartment complexes, condominiums, or even free-standing homes. In general, the housing is friendlier to older
adults — it’s more compact, easier to navigate, and includes maintenance, recreational centers or a variety of social spaces. You may want to consider independent living which is provided at Casa Loma or Comox Valley Seniors Village if: ◗ You see needing minor assistance with hospitality like services such as meals and housekeeping. ◗ You’d like the comfort of having a 24hr emergency response system in place. ◗ You like the idea of socializing with peers and having activity options easily available. Assisted Living Assisted living units are for seniors who require some personal support, but do not need 24-hour care. Assisted living offers a middle option to bridge the gap between home care and residential care. Costs vary according to the level of daily help required. Most assisted living facilities provide apartment-style living with scaled-down ‘tea kitchens’. Assisted living facilities have a group dining area and common areas for social and recreational activities. You or your loved one may be suitable for Assisted Living which is provided at Casa Loma or Comox Valley Seniors Village if you or your loved one: ◗ Need hospitality services (meals, housekeeping, recreation supports, and 24 hour emergency response). ◗ Are able to make decisions on your own behalf, or live with a spouse who is willing and able to make decisions on your behalf. ◗ Are no longer able to stay at home safely (e.g. at risk of isolation, poor nutrition). ◗ Have stable health conditions. ◗ Can function safely with the supports available in the residence. ◗ Recognize the consequences of taking risks find the way within the residence. ◗ Find the way back to the residence suite. ◗ Communicate effectively (verbally or nonverbally)so you or yours are understood by others. ◗ Recognize an emergency, use an emergency response system or summon help, and take direction in an emergency situation. Complex Care Complex Care (residential care) is normally the highest level of care for older adults outside of a hospital. While they do provide assistance in activities of daily living, they differ from other senior housing in that they also provide 24hr nursing care. A Complex Care (residential care) home like that which is at Comox Valley Seniors Village may be a good choice if:
◗ Both medical and personal care needs have become too great to handle at home or in another facility. This may be due to a recent hospitalization, or a chronic illness which has gradually been worsening. ◗ You need a higher level of care temporarily after a hospitalization, but it’s anticipated you will be able to return to home. What is a campus of care? Campuses of care are facilities that include independent living, assisted living, and nursing home care in one location to enable seniors the ability to stay in the same general area as their housing needs change over time. This may allow spouses to still be very close to one another even if one requires a higher level of care. How to assess the senior housing needs There are a range of choices for senior housing, and no simple answer as to which one is right for you or your loved one. Here are some of the factors to consider when evaluating your options: Level of Care No one can predict the future. However, if you or a loved one has a chronic medical condition that is expected to worsen over time, it’s especially important to think about how you will handle health and mobility problems. What are common complications of your condition, and how will you handle them? Are you already at the point where you need daily help? Social support How easy is it for you to visit friends, neighbors, or engage in hobbies that you enjoy? If it becomes difficult or impossible for you to leave your home, you’ll become isolated and depression can rapidly set in.

How to choose energy efficient window coverings
you to need know 1. When energy efficiency is essential the choice is simple – Duette® Archutella® Trielle™ A honeycomb window fashion like no other cellular shade, featuring six layers of insulating fabric 2. When selecting window treatments, check the R value. R value measures the ability to resist heat flow, so, the higher the R value, the better insulating effect a window treatment has. 3. Solar heat gain warms your home during summer months. A product’s Solar Heat Gain Coefficient measures it’s ability to keep the heat out. 4. Window treatments will prevent sun damage from UV exposure. 5. Properly selected window treatments will help you save energy by preventing excess heating and cooling all year long.
Hunter Douglas is the industry leader in making a big energy savings difference at the window. In 1985, they invented the highly energy-efficient Duette honeycomb shade in response to the energy crisis of the late 1970s. More recently, they’ve introduced Duette Architella honeycomb shades, which offer superior energy efficiency thanks to their patented honeycomb-within-a-honeycomb construction.
The Science Behind The Products Without energy-efficient window treatments, as much as 50% of a home’s heating and cooling energy can be lost through its windows. All Hunter douglas window fashions provide window insulation, offering your home increased protection against heat loss during the winter, as well as minimizing the sun’s heat or “solar heat” during the summer. More specifically, here’s how Hunter Doluglas products help conserve energy at the window in these three significant ways:
Insulation: Hunter’s window fashions reduce heat flow (both heat loss and heat gain)
through the windows. It’s a scientific fact that heat is attracted to cold. In winter months, indoor heating moves toward and escapes through windows to the outdoors, while in summertime, the outside heat flows into your home through these same windows. Many Hunter Douglas window fashions boast high R-values-the measure of a product’s ability to resist heat flowhelping reduce energy consumption, save on heating and cooling costs, and creating a more comfortable room setting.
Solar Heat Control: Hunter’s window fashions help to control solar heat (heat generated from the sun) by allowing it into your home in the winter and minimizing the amount that comes in during the summer. The warmth provided by the sun, its solar energy, may be desirable during the winter to help heat your home, yet it can make a room overly hot and uncomfortable while driving up air conditioning costs in the summer. Many Hunter products are designed to reduce the amount of solar heat that passes through the window, which is known as the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC). The lower the SHGC, the more protected your
home is from the sun’s heat. To enjoy the sun’s warmth when desired, simply raise or open the window fashion and invite it in.
Daylighting: Hunter’s window fashions enhance daylighting (the use of natural light) by diffusing and dispersing sunlight deep into a room, reducing your need for electrical lighting. Daylighting is the practice of lighting rooms with natural light rather than generating illumination from electricity. With Hunter Douglas window fashions, you can control how much natural light comes into your room. Our sheers and other select styles actually diffuse light as it enters and help to draw it deeper into the room. You can also direct incoming light where it’s needed most by tilting the louvers, slats, vanes, blinds and panels. By drawing natural light into a room, many of our window treatments reduce your energy needs for other types of lighting. Make certain to visit your local Hunter Douglas Gallery Showroom to see all of the exciting options that Hunter Douglas provides to help keep your valuables safe from the sun and help save with your energy costs.

you to need know 1. Severe Service Maintenance is recommended based on climate/environment as well as the way a vehicle is driven. 2. Engine oil not only lubricates and cools internal engine parts, it collects and traps dirt and contaminates from the combustion process that’s why it is recommended it be changed at regular intervals. 3. Underinflated tires waste gas and can prematurely wear out the tires, because they generate more friction on the road. Making sure your tires are properly inflated is on of the easiest things you can do to optimize fuel economy and tire longevity 4. If your vehicle has 80,000112,000 km or more, it is a good idea to check the Owner’s Manual for the recommended service interval for the engine’s timing belt. It can break without warning rendering your car immobile. 5. Different vehicles require different types of antifreeze. If you need to top off the coolant in your vehicle, check the Owner’s Manual for details on the correct type. Installing the incorrect coolant could harm the cooling system or engine.

How to Find a Good Auto Repair Shop Are you new to the area? New to driving? Suddenly on your own and responsible for vehicle care? Owner of a newer vehicle that is manufactured in such a way that backyard repairs just aren’t possible? Finding a repair facility can be a daunting task. Who do you trust? What is a good and fair price? Who is reliable? First of all, start shopping for a repair facility BEFORE you need one. Why? Because making a sound decision is difficult when you are faced with a car problem and time restraints, finding a shop takes time and patience: you want to research and evaluate the facts in a relaxed fashion. Emergencies create an emotional climate that thwarts a clear and objective evaluation. Evaluating repair shops is really quite a simple task. Call or visit shops in your area. The Internet and local telephone books offer great references. Look for Surveys and Reviews for the facilities you are interested in. The best time to call or visit is between 9am and noon because it is after the morning rush. With that in mind however, a good repair facility will welcome you and be willing to address your questions and concerns at any time. Advise the reception staff of your intention and spend some time in the waiting area. Pay attention to the atmosphere of the shop. Are they calm, professional and organized? First impressions are very important. Is the reception area neat, clean and organized? Is the staff friendly, respectful and courteous to customers and one another? Don’t hesitate to ask present customers that come in why they do business with that particular facility. Answers such as “They are the cheapest” or “They offer a lot of specials” or “Because the owner is a friend of my Father’s” don’t hold much credibility. Look for responses such as “They fix my vehicle right the first time”, “ I can trust them to do the job at a fair price”, “They welcome my questions and concerns and take the time to answer them”, “There are never any unpleasant surprises when I come to pick up my vehicle” or “They explain in Layman’s Terms what the problem is and explain my options” Ask them what professional associations they have. Membership in associations such as BBB, BCAA, CAA or Iatn (International Auto Technicians Association). These associations mean the shop and/or technicians care about their level of expertise and have met the standards of membership.
Their involvement in these associations tells you that the owner of the repair facility is interested in and takes pride in the quality of the workmanship provided. Another factor to consider when choosing a repair facility is the equipment and repair information system available. Does the shop have state-of-the-art/up-to-date equipment such as hand-held computer scanners and diagnostic software? Do they utilize on-line repair information systems such as Alldata or Mitchell-On-Demand? Up-to-date information systems and tools are necessary to diagnose and repair your hi-tech vehicle accurately. Without them, fixing your automobile becomes as hit-andmiss proposition that can result in higher repair bills and lost time with your vehicle. Sometimes it is best to take your car to a specialist. Specialists cost more money initially. But because they are specialists, they often know how to pinpoint and repair certain types of problems more efficiently and effectively. Why? They deal with these problems every day, plus they have the knowledge, equipment and information systems necessary to get directly to the problem. Specialists diagnose with laser-like accuracy, locate the problem and replace only the parts required. Less guesswork and fewer parts translates into money in your pocket, even though the labor rate is higher. Don’t be shortsighted. Consider the long-term cost. Don’t sell yourself short for a few dollars. Quality
repair is not expensive…it is PRICELESS! Equipment, information systems and technical training must be up to date!
Does size matter? Some people think that the cost of repair varies with the size of the facility (a large shop or dealership is probably more expensive). Not true! These days with the high cost of equipment, training and information systems the cost of repair at dealerships, large repair facilities and small shops is balancing out. If service facilities meet the criteria (and the quality of parts and warranties are similar) you will find prices are about the same regardless of size. So your decision at this point is a matter of whom you feel most comfortable dealing with. Some people prefer a larger shop or their dealership, others prefer a small shop. Bottom line is that at the end of the day you should feel that you are in control of the service and repair your vehicle receives. Be wary of uninformed repair recommendations or force-play repairs. Don’t trust your automobile, which carries our family through life’s daily trips to just anyone. Choose your vehicle repair facility as you would your family doctor. In the long run this approach saves you not only money, but time and aggravation. Even more importantly, a well maintained vehicle is a safer one. Take the time and effort to seek out a repair facility that you can have confidence in.

you to need know 1. Get Pre-Qualified for a Mortgage
2. Shop for Mortgage Terms
3. Get Professional Inspections
4. Use a Professional Real Estate Agent
5. Sell First, Then Buy
www.comoxvalleyrecord.com
Consumer Guide ❯❯
Top 5 Home Buyer Tips #1. Get Pre-Qualified for a Mortgage Before looking for your next home take the time to get pre-qualified by the bank or mortgage broker you choose. This can save you hours of searching for homes in the wrong price range or worse, purchasing a home and then finding out you don’t qualify for financing. Pre-qualifying gives you peace of mind, helps narrow your search criteria and most importantly, gives your RE/MAX agent a negotiating edge by being able to alleviate the sellers concern over financing. The latter is especially important should a competing offer surface. Once you are pre-qualified your mortgage approval may be subject to certain requirements of the home you purchase. At www.remax-western.ca the affordability calculator will help you determine what monthly mortgage payment and the maximum mortgage you can manage. Note: if you are buying a condo, the amount of your monthly assessment has a direct impact on how much you can afford to spend on your mortgage. First time homebuyers may want to take advantage of the federal government’s Home Buyers’ Plan. Under this plan, you may use up to $25,000 of your RRSP towards the purchase of a home. The money is tax-free as long as you pay it back in the next 15 years. Ask your RE/MAX Sales Associate for details. #2. Shop For Mortgage Terms Rates are negotiable! Banks will sharpen their pencils to get your business especially if you have a good credit rating and bring other business to them e.g. RRSP’s, general account, savings etc. Posted rates should viewed as a starting point. You need to know what the best rate is and this is usually done by get competitive quotes. Also, ask whether the bank will cover appraisal fees, and about buy-out fees, penalties, payment options, portability etc. The time spent can save you thousands of dollars over the life of the mortgage. Interest rates are at 50 year low levels. There is only one direction for rates to go so consider the ability to lock-in or fix your rate for a long term. #3. Get Professional Inspections Nobody wants to purchase a home only to find out later there are defects, latent or otherwise. Common defects include asbestos, plumbing, wiring, and mould and these can impact your ability to obtain financing or even home insurance. If the inspection identifies deficiencies you may be able to negotiate the purchase price to cover required repairs or make your satisfaction of the inspection subject to the homeowner remedying the problem. There are a number of reasons why RE/MAX recommends a home inspection including:
◗ To ensure you are not surprised by major defects ◗ So you can be advised about the various elements of the home including - heating and cooling systems, structure, electrical and plumbing ◗ Most homeowners are not expert in the numerous components of house construction ◗ A third party can be objective as there is no emotional attachment The home inspection will determine the structural and mechanical soundness of the home. Your home inspector can identify existing and potential problem areas, suggest possible solutions and provide estimates for the cost of the work required. You will receive a report outlining the inspection findings. If as a result of the inspection, you have further concerns, have a specialist in that area conduct a more extensive examination.
Your RE/MAX agent can advise you on inspections you should consider. #4. Use A Professional Real Estate Agent Your RE/MAX agent can help you make a purchase with the least amount of problems. He or she can ensure the price you pay is market value. They can offer expert advice on what to look for, conditions to include, negotiation strategy etc. After all, they work for you. Most buyers are introduced to their next home by a REALTOR® and with today’s technology, you can receive daily emails of homes meeting your specifications. Got a smart phone? We have an app for you.
As single family home prices have risen, many consumers have been looking to condominiums as an alternative. First time buyers like the lower prices, which make entry into the real estate ownership market easier. Seniors like the low maintenance aspect and the ability to be in a community catering to their lifestyle. Others like the security advantages that the building provides, especially for those who travel frequently. When you purchase a condominium, you purchase and have title to your individual unit in a multi-unit property, and share in the ownership of the land and other common property with all the other unit owners. The type of common property varies depending on the type of condominium - high rise or townhouse for example - and would include hallways, elevators, heating system, parking structures, landscaped areas, recreation areas etc.
#5. Sell First, Then Buy If price is important you should always sell your present home before buying another. It has the advantage in letting you know exactly how much money you will have available for your next purchase. Selling your home first allows you to place fewer conditions on your purchase which makes your offer more attractive to a seller. They often will demand more money to take a “subject to” offer which takes their home off the market. The other advantage is if you find a terrific house, chances are others will also find it attractive and you stand to lose it if you can’t make an unconditional offer.
Know all the costs associated with your purchase. Consider the following: legal fees, transfer tax, property taxes, new home landscaping, fencing, appliances and window coverings.

5. A new dimension in
window technology Engineered for the future. Unleaded profiles that are 100% recyclable. Guaranteed to last for over 30 years
The window and door industry is changing drastically and quickly. With changes to building codes, manufacturing regulations and Energy Star ratings, windows and doors also need to change. When you look at Energy Star ratings, the smaller the rating number the better the window or door will need to perform. Did you know that windows in the building envelope are responsible for 40% of the energy consumption? Therefore, it is important to choose a window system that can help you reduce heating costs considerably, and therefore can also lower the CO2 emissions. When does a window become more than just a window? It needs not only to look pretty in your home but it needs to be able to keep you safe from harsh weather conditions, burglars, save you money, all while enhancing the value of your home. And last but not least, keep up with all these new codes and energy standards. Can you really get doors and windows that do all of that? The E-85 tilt turn windows and doors made with Aluplast extrusions are a true performer. Engineered and designed for the future, the E-85 system offers you German engineering and technology, innovation, elegance along with superior energy efficiency, notable heat insulation, and contributes actively to the reduction of CO2, saving you heating costs
while reducing your environmental footprint. It is a 3-in-1 window system that offers you a picture window when the handle is in the downward position and it is locked. And with ease of a single handle movement can be opened and swing the sash to the inside for ventilation or emergency exit if needed. This position also allows you to clean the window safely from the inside of the home. For continuous ventilation and security, turn the handle upward, and the window will tilt in from the top. When the window is in the tilt position, it offers draft free and secure ventilation. The window cannot be opened from the outside of the room and therefore it will keep intruders out. Most importantly, Aluplast E-85 tilt turn windows offer you maximum security from potential intruders and harsh weather conditions. Noted for their durability, they will actually add value to your home and save you heating/cooling costs for years to come. The energy savings you experience,
depending on the windows and doors you are replacing, can be very dramatic. The Aluplast E85 tilt turn system offers you the capability to turn your home into a “Passive House”, a term used for an ultra low energy home. While the benefits of turning your home into a passive home may appear to be obvious, what is lesser known is that it can be an affordable option for your home. The Passive House concept is designed to drastically save the energy consumption. It is not about how mild or harsh weather conditions are, the Passive house design is all about saving energy and saving money and reducing CO2 emissions. Canada is following suite in high speed what Europe already did 20 years ago. Discover the Aluplast E-85 tilt turn system for yourself. Ask a neighbor that has them or go straight to your local tilt turn window and door manufacturer. The Aluplast E-85 Tilt Turn window is much more than “just a window”.

How to Shop for New Appliances
you to need know 1. Select kitchen
appliances with attention to how you cook and live everyday. Buy appliances and consider kitchen design for everyday life, not the few exceptions throughout the year.
2. Check the space
available for the appliance to make sure you select the right size unit and make sure halls and doorways allow clearance for entry and installation.
3. Look online for
specification sheets from the manufacturers who make the appliances you plan to purchase. Compare available features, designs and capacities.
4. Select brands that are
serviceable in your area, particularly if you live in remote areas.
5. Read the warranty
before finalizing your decision. Does the warranty cover the entire product? Only certain parts? Is labour included? How long does the warranty last?
Darryl Bennett, Chantelle Mailer, Hennie Herselman Increased integration will be coming to a kitchen near you for 2013 kitchen trends. No longer are paneled dishwashers and refrigerators enough for the modern open concept kitchen. Ovens, microwaves and other wall-mounted appliances are becoming sleek, more modular and hug their cabinetry more closely than ever before. High-tech design is another hot appliance trend for this year. Not only are manufacturers bringing the functionality of high-tech gadgets to appliances, they also are borrowing their streamlined designs. Steam cooking, something I fell in love with a few years ago, will be another major trend in 2013. Steam ovens have long been popular in large upscale kitchens whose owners value its healthy cooking benefits. New offerings bring steam to microwaves, double ovens and even ranges. This dramatically improves the opportunity to design steam cooking into the typical North American kitchen. Intuitive touchscreen interfaces will be a major trend in 2013. They’ve been available in basic form for awhile, but the smartphone
and tablet craze has spread to the appliance category. New models will provide far more functionality than just presets, cooking time and mode. Induction cooking has been popular in Europe for quite awhile, but its reintroduction into the North American market several years back has been slow to catch on, until now. This is likely to be the year it really takes off. There are several reasons why: • It can lower your electric bill and cashstrapped homeowners are taking notice • Improvements are delivering pro-chef level temperature control • Their speed is increasingly appealing to time-stressed homeowners • There is an ever-broadening selection of offerings, including 30” and 36” cooktops, slide-in and free-standing ranges that are easier than ever to operate Later this year, manufacturers will be releasing smarter cooktops with full surface cooking and setting memory as you move your pot and pan from one location to another.
More multi-tasking appliance offerings, like the refrigerator/freezer/wine captain combos, will continue to surge in 2013. Previous year multi tasking appliances have included a built-in fridge with a convertible fridge/freezer drawer, a countertop microwave/steam oven/grill and pro-style range with steam oven. Expect to see more unique and useful combos in 2013. This is due in part to a value consciousness by homeowners. Interestingly, it’s also due to two conflicting trends: One, the average home is shrinking in size compared to the boom-time ‘McMansions’ and two, the larger, more affluent homes tend to have large, open “show” kitchens and smaller back “prep” or “caterer’s” kitchens. These multi-tasking appliances come in handy for both. With the multitude of trends for this year, the options and choices for the right appliances in your kitchen have become greater. With careful planning and research you can create the kitchen you’ve always dreamed of having.

Choosing a Roofing Company
you to need know 1. Protect yourself, when considering a roofing contractor; make sure they have proper insurance in place, liability and WCB 2. Does your contractor have a permanent and identifiable place of address? 3. Is your roofing contractor fully licensed? 4. Can your roofing contractor provide references or places where you can go see their previous jobs? 5. Does your roofing contractor belong to national, local, or regional associations?
Choosing a roofing company is a big decision, after all, the roof of your home is your primary defence against the elements on what is likely going to be the biggest investment you make in your lifetime-your home. When choosing a roofing company to work on your home, there are so many things to consider-the price of the job is only part of the equation. Tenure of the company you choose to work on your home is a very important consideration. Since 2011, 11 of 28 roofing companies in the Comox Valley have gone out of business. That’s 40%! This is important simply because if a company leaves or goes under, your workmanship warranty is void, as is your shingle warranty, if they were improperly installed. Your roofing company should have a permanent, identifiable place of business, complete with phone number, a physical address and appropriate business licenses. This information should be provided along with your written proposal. Does your roofing contractor keep abreast of the latest developments in the industry? A professional contractor will belong to local, regional and, or national associations and attend seminars on the problems and latest developments in the
industry. Ask your contractor if they belong to the RCABC - Roofing Contractor Association of BC. Qualified contractors will have insurance. They should have insurance certificates showing both workers compensation and general liability insurance. Homeowners can suffer a needless expense if a contractor doesn’t have this coverage. Also ensure that your contractor is in fact licensed and they have the appropriate licenses to do the work. Your roofing contractor should have a Hot Work Endorsement for Torch on SBS roofing, used in low slope or flat roof applications. If your roofer isn’t endorsed, and your home burns down, your insurance may not cover the loss. A qualified roofing contractor will have plenty of references of past customers who will have had the same work done as you will be getting. Source out where these jobs were done and go look at them. How do they look? This is a great opportunity to look at the roof system you have selected for your home. Would these people recommend the roofing contractor who did the job on their home, or was there problems. The roofing contractor may be an approved applicator for one or more roofing material manufacturers. Ask if the product
you chose has an approved applicator program and if your roofing contractor is certified. Keep in mind that most manufacturers of products for low sloped roofs have approved applicator programs, and most manufacturers of shingles and tile do not have these programs. All roofing contractors should have a written safety program. An emphasis on safety lowers the cost of doing business and helps to assure that your job will go smoothly. Ask about any safety programs. They should also have a quality assurance program. The work that is done will be inspected, so find out who will be doing it. A roofing contractor must be financially stable. In some respects, this goes back to how long they have been in the community, do they have an actual address and how busy they are. Also, there should be no requirement for any money up front. A legitimate contractor will accept payment in full, once the work is done. Most of all, a roofing contractor must make you feel comfortable that they have the experience and the expertise to do the job of handling the installation you require. Hopefully, you have seen them around your town, installing roofs on other residences and commercial buildings.

How to choose a carpet cleaner
1. It is best not to choose
a carpet cleaner based on a single telephone call. Instead, invite the person to your home and ask for a specific written quotation.
2. Hot water does not
damage your carpets; it cleans them thoroughly when the proper equipment is used to suction all the water out. as dust mites, fleas and germs live and breed in your carpets – vacuuming alone is not enough.
4. Always choose a carpet
cleaning company that offers a risk-free guarantee, and that will stand behind every job 100%.
5. Choose a company
that is certified by the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC).

Choosing a carpet cleaner isn’t easy. Hopefully this information will help you make an informed, intelligent decision. The Importance of Value and Price. Price is what you pay. Value is what you get. When you select a carpet cleaner, you’ll choose from a wide variety of cleaning methods and prices. Shaw Industries, the world’s largest carpet manufacturer, recommends hot water extraction from a truck-mounted unit, and using a portable unit only in areas where the truckmounted unit won’t reach. Here’s why: a truck-mounted unit cleans much better than a portable unit for three reasons: (1) It heats the water to a higher temperature. For every 18 degree increase in temperature above 118 degrees F, you double the water’s cleaning ability. So if the water temperature is 136 degrees F, it will clean twice as well as water that is 118 degrees F. 154 degree water will clean four times as well as 118 de-
gree water, and so on, until you reach a water temperature of 240 degrees F. (2) It shoots the cleaning solution into your carpet at higher pressures, which breaks up the dirt, bacteria, chemicals and pollens. 300 to 400 pounds per square inch is the optimum pressure for truckmount hot water extraction. (3) The machine uses stronger suction to draw the dirt, chemicals, bacteria, pollens and tobacco smoke residue out of your carpet. Not surprisingly, having your carpet thoroughly cleaned with truck-mount hot water extraction costs more than renting a shampooer at the corner grocery store. If you bought the cheapest carpeting you could find, then renting a small shampooer might be all you need. No question, it will get out some of the dirt – but it will not get out many of the pollens, chemicals, bacteria and dust mite residues. On the other hand, if you want your carpet to look good and give you years of dependable service, then you need to take extra good care of it. You should have it cleaned by a skilled, qualified technician at least every six months to one year, depending on the amount of soiling and foot traffic it receives. And you need to have it cleaned and sanitized, as only a truck-mount hot water extractor can do. 3 CosTly MIsConCePTIons AbouT CArPeT CleAnIng MIsConCePTIon #1: You should wait as long as possible before cleaning your carpet. No. Dirt is as abrasive as sandpaper. Every time you step on your carpet, you grind dirt into the carpet fibers. This
cuts your carpet, just as if you had used a knife. This cutting causes your carpet to wear out faster. A dirty carpet will not last as long as a clean carpet. And while vacuuming helps by itself, it’s simply not enough. The longer you wait to have your carpet cleaned the more damage you do to the carpet and the faster it wears out.
MIsConCePTIon #2: The only reason to clean carpets is to remove dirt. No. As you probably know, outdoor air contains pollens, fungus, bacteria, air pollution, cigarette smoke, car exhaust and hundreds of other chemicals. When you come into your home, you carry those pollens, bacteria and chemicals in your hair and on your skin, clothing and shoes. Not surprisingly, all those chemicals and toxins wind up in your carpet. If you have allergies, asthma, emphysema, and other breathing problems, one major source of your problem could be the pollens, fungus, smoke and chemicals in your carpet. MIsConCePTIon # 3: The Company that offers the lowest price is the company you should hire. No. Many problems can arise from the lowest bid. To some degree, all of us are attracted by low price because we want to work within a budget. But be aware that the price advertised may not be the price you pay. Many homeowners have learned that the low price they saw advertised lasted only until the carpet cleaner got into their home. They were quoted one price (usually per room) and then, once in your home, it would be suggested you buy a variety of “add-ons”. Also know that honest, reputable carpet cleaning companies almost never price carpet cleaning by the room. Instead, carpet cleaning is usually priced by the square foot - they need to know the exact number of square feet that you want cleaned to give you an accurate cost of cleaning your carpet. Then ask for a specific quote in writing. A written quote gives the assurance that you’ll know exactly what your job will cost – no surprises. Before you choose a carpet cleaner, ask for references or read comments from current customers to ensure you are going to get a quality job and that you can depend on the carpet cleaner and his work.

Green.
You see this word probably multiple times everyday; commercials on T.V. (cars, laptops), household items from laundry soap to toilet paper, and so on. We all want to be greener, and try to make choices about what we buy and what we throw away to do our part. But it’s more than just saving the planet: we buy green products lie hand soap and laundry detergent because we are concerned about the exposure of our families and pets to the chemicals found in regular products. Carpet cleaning can be green and safe too. Unfortunately, most companies, even those who claim that they use ‘natural’ ingredients, use harmful, toxic chemicals (phosphates, methyl ether, butyls, etc.) These ingredients are not only harmful to aquatic life when they enter our sewer system and make their way to our waterways, but they are also harmful to our health.
That’s why we use Green Label Products* that are not toxic to aquatic life or humans, are not carcinogens or known to cause reproductive toxicity, are not corrosive to the skin or eyes, and do not contain substances that contribute significantly to the production of photochemical smog, topospheric ozone, or poor indoor-air quality.
Do green label products clean as well as ordinary chemicals?
Yes! Cleaning solutions make up a portion of all the elements that are required for effective cleaning. Other elements, such as heat, rinsing and extraction are equally, if not more important. Unfortunately, when cleaners are not willing to take the time to do the job correctly or use quality equipment, they have to resort to using harsh chemicals to make up the difference.
We use the
hottest water, in sufficient amounts to properly rinse all residues from your carpet. We have the
highest level of extraction, to give you a clean fresh, safe carpet that is dry within hours. We use
green label products that we are so sure of, we will gladly show you the MSDS sheets.
