Splash into one of the many lakes or take it easy on one of the beautiful beaches the North Okanagan has to offer. Kal Beach is located at the north end of Kalamalka Lake (in Coldstream) and offers a long meandering beach with a pier perfect for a sunset stroll. With golden sands there is a large area blocked off for swimming, and some great shaded areas for cooling off. A close walk away there is a family-friendly pub with an adjacent liquor store, a convenience store, a stand up paddle board shop, a booth to rent life jackets and kayaks, and in summer there is a concession stand. Around Kalamalka Lake there are numerous smaller areas to take a dip such as Kekuli, Kalavista, Kirkland and Sovereign beaches. For a complete list visit www.vernonbeaches.com. Further down the lake there is also Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park, where you can hike into several sandy alcoves. While many people are attracted to the turquoise tranquility of Kal Lake, the region is also home to Okanagan Lake. Kin Beach is located at the far north end of Okanagan Lake and is a popular spot for a splashing good time. This popular hangout offers not only the beach itself, but a wonderful park with barbecue pits, a large grassy area, towering trees and covered picnic areas. Paddlewheel Park beach is also a great place for family fun and is located on Okanagan Landing Road with a boat launch on site. To get away from the summer crowds you can always venture out to the nearby provincial parks of Ellison, Mabel Lake and Fintry. Or check out one of the region’s many hiking and/or cycling trails. The ultimate fun-stop is above Swan Lake, where you can ride the slides at Atlantis Waterslides. The family-fun centre features nine slides for varying ages and abilities and the popular river riot. There’s also a hot tub, mini golf, arcade, ice cream parlour, concession and more. The waterslides are open June 13 to Sept. 3 with a soft opening June 1-2 and grand opening June 8-9 (but it will be closed June 10,11,12). For rates and directions visit www.atlantiswaterslides.ca or call 250-549-4121. If you’re looking for even more summer adventure add sailing into your summer schedule. The North Okanagan Sailing Association will be providing two programs, one for adults and one for youth to give people of all ages an opportunity to feel the wind while on the water sailing. A sense of adv entu Submitted by the Vernon Yacht Club re. ability .. to sail into You’ve heard it many times before; we live in one of the most beautiful places on earth. This statement is not only true because of the wonderful dry, semi-arid climate we all enjoy but equally as much because of the many large, fresh water recreational lakes right on our door step. At the centre of these pristine, deep water lakes sits Lake Okanagan with its 270 kilometers of shoreline stretching from the City of Penticton at the south to the City of Vernon at the north with 6 of the major centres in the Okanagan Valley each having their own private yacht club situated along its 135 kilometer length. It truly is difficult to think of a better way for anyone to enjoy what the Okanagan has to offer throughout the year than to be out on the water cruising and exploring the hidden gems accessible from the waters’ edge. Even more intriguing, and with a feeling a being on some exotic voyage to distant ports, is the

any one of these yacht clubs on Lake Okanagan and feel as though you belong and to make yourself at home and enjoy the amenities they each have to offer and then be able to leave your vessel, your floating vacation home, safely at the dock freeing you to go and explore this new “port” you have just arrived at by water. It’s true, a Regular Member of any one of the 6 yacht clubs situated on Lake Okanagan are entitled to reciprocal privileges at the other 5 just as if they were a member of that club, with complimentary moorage for up to a few nights, provided they respect those facilities and the Members of the host club. from the water. Not only that, there are a number of other yacht clubs throughout the Pacific Northwest and even beyond with whom the Vernon Yacht Club has reciprocal privileges if you were to take your vessel to the coast or perhaps to charter a boat. The Vernon Yacht Club, enjoying its 60th anniversary this year, has plenty to offer the local boating enthusiast and their family; whether it is power boating or sailing that is your passion as both are pretty much equally represented amongst the 285 slips in the marina basin. The Vernon Yacht Club is the owner of its own land fronting onto Lake Okanagan, thereby giving its members control over their future. The welcoming 2 storey airconditioned Clubhouse with its full service bar, dance floor, sound and audio systems, games room with pool table, foosball and shuffle board and of course the large wrap-around deck overlooking the lake with a retractable awning is the focal point of the Vernon Yacht Club. Recently updated washroom facilities on both levels and a fully self-contained shower on the lower level are available for those nights you decide to campout on your boat at the Club. Social events throughout the year are plenty at the Vernon Yacht Club, with the usual special occasion dinner parties for Christmas, New Years, Halloween, etc., and the incredibly popular weekly Friday Night dinners and Sunday brunches. But during the boating season every year there are the infamous annual Rib-Off held every May and the Pig Roast every September, not to mention the Commodores Ball and Sail Past in June as well as various inter-Club “invasions”, organized dinner parties where Members from all the other Clubs are invited to “invade” the hosting Club by water on their boats for the weekend.
N u m e r o u s Sailing Regattas on L a k e Okanagan are also hosted by each of the yacht clubs where skippers and their crew get together for a weekend of camaraderie and a chance to test their skills while racing against one another at the host yacht club. The Vernon Yacht Club is selfmanaged by the Commodore and Board of Directors who are all volunteer Members with the exception of only a few paid staff. The Vernon Yacht Club provides valuable moorage space free of charge to the Okanagan Landing Volunteer Fire Fighters Association for their rescue boat equipped with a water cannon, the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary for their patrol boat and to the Okanagan Quality of Life Society for their pontoon boat “Heaven Can Wait” that is used to take the elderly and the infirmed on free excursion on Lake Okanagan. Joining the Vernon Yacht Club may not be as costly as you might otherwise think. To become a Regular lifetime member with a vote in the affairs of the Club and access to moorage privileges means paying a one-time initiation fee and your annual dues, presently $3,000 and $480 respectively, plus moorage. You also have the option to join as an Associate Member to enjoy the many social aspects of the Club but without voting or moorage privileges. To join as an Associate Member there is no initiation fee, just annual dues at one-half the dues for a Regular Member, presently $240. Individuals, couples and families interested in becoming a member of the Vernon Yacht Club, either as a Regular or Associate Member, are invited to speak with any Club Member, Staff or, contact the Membership Director by phone (250545-5518) by email (office@ vernonyachtclub.com) or visit our website www.vernonyachtclub.com

1. Apply early: It’s important to apply sunscreen at least 15 to 30 minutes before sun exposure. Put sunscreen on your kids each day before they get dressed to make it part of their routine. 2. Apply enough: You should be using one ounce or 30mL of sunscreen – roughly the size of a golf ball – each time you apply. 3. Apply everywhere: Don’t forget ears, lips, shoulders and the nose. These areas are most susceptible to sun exposure. 4. Re-apply frequently: Be sure to re-apply one ounce of sunscreen every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating. • Make it easy: Spray sunscreens are handy and easy to use – just spray and go! Look for a sunscreen that is gentle on skin, tear-free, and pediatrician tested such as the Banana Boat Kids Tear For more Free Sunscreen. family-friendly • Lead by example: Remember that children imitate their parents, reapply sunscreen often to show how important sun protection is to your family.

golfers enjoy a peaceful round surrounded by lombard poplars and weeping willows. There are 6,600 yards of fairway on this 18-hole, par 72, course. Book on-line tee times at www.vernongolf.com. If you are looking to challenge yourself, check out Hillview Golf Club’s fastplaying, 18-hole course that is short, but demanding. Sitting at par 57, only 3 holes are a par 4, but they are no easy task. With eight lakes connected by creeks and several sandtraps there are some obstacles over this 3,375 yard course. Call 250-549-GOLF. There is just so much opportunity to get great golfing in the Okanagan, so some other worthy mentions are Mabel Lake Golf and Country Club near Enderby (250-838-0881), Royal York in Armstrong (250-546-9700), Coldstream Golf Course in Lumby (250-547-6048), River Ridge in Cherryville (250-5479660) or Sonseeker’s Ridge (250-833-0258) between Enderby and Salmon Arm, Birchdale Par 3 in Grindrod (250-838-7740) and Aspen Grove in Lake Country (250766-3933). The Starlight Drive-In, off Highway 97 just before Enderby, shows two movies for one low price. There’s a snack bar, boasting the lowest concession prices in B.C., with candy, beverages, nachos, hot dogs, fries and of course popcorn. The drive-in is open weekends only until June 21, when the big screen will light up the sky every night until Sept. 1. Shows continue on the weekends until the final showing in late September. No matter the weather, the show must go on. For times and showings visit www.starlightdrivein.ca or call the showline: 250-838-6757. safe in the water
(NC)—In order to beat the heat and stay cool this summer, many of us head to the beach or cottage to splash around in the water. Wherever you choose to cool off – safety comes first.
Did you know that drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional death for Canadian children under 14? Personal floatation devices (PFDs) can make the difference between life and death. Pamela Fuselli from Parachute (formerly Safe Kids Canada) shares the following tips and advice to ensure you and your loved ones remain safe on the water this summer.
•
Stay within sight and reach when children are in, on or near water. Children under age 5 have the highest risk of drowning because they are attracted to water but they don’t understand the dangers of drowning.
• Wear your PFD on the boat. Approximately 90 per cent of
recreational boaters who have drowned in Canada were not wearing a PFD.
• PFDs should fit snugly and not ride up over the ears when
in the water. If there is more than 7.6 cm of space between the tops of your shoulders and the vest it is too large. Children should also have a head support and safety strap between the legs.
•
Sizes vary by brand and model so make sure to try it on. The right size PFD will allow you to move freely and not chafe while moving or turning.
•
Buckles on safety straps and reflective tape are also great additions on PFDs to ensure you can be spotted while in the water. Consider attaching a non-metallic pealess whistle to the device as well. Canadian laws require that recreational boats have one correctly fitted PFD for every person on board. So this summer consider a PFD such as the Stearns Paddlesport Vest, which provides a comfortable and stylish addition to any water activity. While PFDs are designed to keep you afloat in the water, remember, they only work if you wear them. More information is available online at www.stearnscanada. ca and at www.parachutecanada.org.

Round up your posse for some oldfashioned fun at the Historic O’Keefe Ranch. Founded in 1867, the Ranch tells the story of early B.C. ranching endeavours. Visitors can take a walk through the old O’Keefe Victorian-style Mansion, view the original pump organ of St. Anne’s Church, shop in the general store, or visit the Blacksmith. People even still get married in the beautiful little chapel built so long ago. Guides dressed in traditional garb can tour you through the buildings that hold so much history. There is also an on-site museum to honour the heritage of the days of old and a new interactive kids centre. Guests can feel free to wander the ranch and take in the collection of vintage farm machinery, pan for gold, see the huge model railway display, catch a glimpse of some of the critters or grab a bite at the famous Cattlemen’s Club Restaurant. The ranch also has RV parking and camping sites. The Ranch hosts free Movie Night on O’Keefe Hill July 4, July 18, Aug. 1 and Aug. 15. The Cowboy Summer Festival, which offers cowboy competitions, demonstrations and more runs Aug 4-5. Cruise back in time to the Vintage Motorcycle and Car Show July 6 and 7. The ranch also features a Family Fun Day, The Cowboy Dinner Show, and the Murder Mystery Dinner Show. Countless events take place at the ranch over the summer so check out the listings of events at www.okeeferanch.ca, or call 250-542-7868.

PHONEY LANET BEE FARM & MEADERY Mead or Honey Wine, the oldest alcoholic beverage known to man, is made from fermented honey and water. By using unique British Columbia floral sources of honey, by adding specific fruit concentrates, herbs and spices, mead can be finished in many delightful ways.
(NC)—There’s nothing like a road trip to kick start your summer and take in some fresh air. Grab the kids and get out of town for the weekend to visit one of Canada’s provincial parks for a night of camping under the stars. Don’t rush out the door without packing all your gear though, or else you could find yourself in trouble.
• Mead Tasting & Sales • Country Store & Gift Shop • Educational Tours & Presentation • Honey Health Boutique
• Safety first: A road safety kit is your number one concern. Make sure you have flares, a small gas can and jumper cables in case you have to make an unexpected pit stop. If you run into car trouble and you’re in a remote location, make sure you keep your cell phone charged. Lastly, keep a set of blankets and a first aid kit to provide medical attention in the event of an accident. • Don’t let the bed bugs bite: Buy a sturdy tent with a ground sheet and a rain-fly, and sleeping bags for the whole family. Bring a bag of charcoal briquettes if your campsite has a barbeque, and don’t forget a spatula either—you don’t want to be flipping burgers with a tree branch. Lastly, stop by your local hardware store and get an electric lamp to light your tent or a wind-up flashlight so you don’t have to worry about batteries. • Freshening up: Pack a waterproof bag with toilet paper, toothbrushes and some extra first aid items. A bug-bite cream will definitely come in handy, and bring sunscreen with a reliable SPF 30 or above. Pick up a biodegradable shampoo and body wash combo that you can use in the lake or campsite shower station. A little planning can go a long way, just like you can on your family road trips. Just make sure you plan ahead to make it a safe, happy and memorable trip for the whole family. Now get out there, and explore the open road.
