A man willing to do what it takes for the Women’s Resource Centre The event is called “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes®: The International Men’s March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault & Gender Violence,” and one city business owner is going an extra mile.

Ken Bridge, of Bridge Interiors, will not only be walking in high heels for the cause, he will also be wearing a red dress.

“This started as a joke.

Ken said no way and when I said I’d pay, he said he’d walk in high heels and a red dress if I could raise $2,500 for the women’s centre,” said Carlene Charbonneau, of Bridge Interiors. “But our goal is to raise $10,000. I think we can do that. And as we go up in price, we will add things to Ken’s outfit like a purse, hat, feather boa, etcetera.

Ken is a great supporter of the community and something like this needs a big personality to pull it off.”

The following is an excerpt from Joyce Beek’s ‘The First Meadowlark’ My father loved his horses; they were not the purebred sort, just mixtures of breeds. As a Manitoba grain farmer in the early 1900, he chose his horses for their strength and agreeable nature, rather than speed and beauty. He jokingly called them his ’partners in production’, but there was more than a grain of truth in his quip. For him life revolved around family, farm and horses.

Starting out as a bachelor, he spent six years making the worst biscuits in the west. He would come from the field, wash off the dirt, and ask himself, “What will I eat for supper?

I’ll fry some eggs and slice up the rest of those spuds I boiled yesterday.

No radio, no TV, no telephone, just a dog and a few families of farm cats that hung about the barn.

It takes but a few years of batching to make a man appreciate a family. I imagine Dad must often have told himself as he looked for a bit of conversation, ‘I’ll give the pony a run to town and buy a 25 cent bag of peppermints.’

Dad pointed out to his daughters the different temperaments of his ‘partners’: which ones would pull together and which were inclined to administer a nip to its harness partner. We girls watched from the pasture gate when the horses were released from the stable after a few days of confinement. They romped about, kicking up heels, mud flying out behind, ears turned back in warning to one another. Most tried to roll over in the dirt, often unsuccessfully, although they tried over and over.

Some showed rank at the long trough pushing their stable mates out of

the chosen spot where the salty water fell from the spout; others were content to move out of the way.

When I was I about seven Dad had a slim sorrel pony named Scamp. He rode bareback for he never owned a saddle. That was not his style. In early spring he would be off to a day at an Auction Sale, the place he purchased all his horses. These sales, held in the off season, provided occasion for friendly chats about local news and political discussions. My sisters and I would watch for Dad’s return to see if he might be leading, alongside Scamp, a new addition to our stable. Naming every animal was left to us girls and was the cause of much deliberation.

One day Dad returned from an auction sale with a mare named Maude. She had a shiny black coat with a distinct white star on her forehead. The next spring she dropped an exquisite foal, a miniature Maude, right down to the star. We were allowed in shortly after the birth and watched the newborn struggle to her feet on long shaky legs. The proud mother licked her baby clean and dry. It was quickly unanimous--- the filly’s name would be Star.

A traumatic event affecting the whole family occurred at haying time that summer, while Star was still following her mother. Because Dad’s usual team was working elsewhere, he had hitched up Maude with another horse to pull the mower for a short stint.

As Dad turned to make a new swath, Star ran in front of the mower blade. One of her rear legs was damaged so severely that he had to shoot her. He said very

little, but as I think of it now, I’m sure he must have blamed himself many times over for hitching up Maude that morning.

By 1950 most farmers had purchased several sections of land, having converted to tractors and other large equipment.

Harvesting by combine made it possible to complete a field in half the time without hiring outside help. Production grew exponentially.

Using horses would be inefficient for them. Besides winter holidays in the south then became possible.

Because of ill health, but still content with his life, Dad chose not to modernize and retired while still in his fifties.

He had never owned more than a half section.

He never felt the need of a holiday. His life was a working holiday.

There is something very special about farming with horses. A tractor is so impersonal. It won’t whinny when you enter the barn, nor will it nuzzle your side when you drop oats in its feed box.

I’m sure most farmers were glad not to be up in the night caring for sick animals or having to pay veterinarian’s bills. But I know my father had no regrets, and only fond memories of his horses.

BC Children’s Hospital helps kids get care closer to home Brooke Malakoff has made countless trips to BC Children’s Hospital since she was diagnosed with cancer in 2011. The 18-yearold Fernie resident has nothing but praise for the hospital and the doctors and nurses who have cared for her, but she’s always happy when she doesn’t have to travel any further than Cranbrook for care.

“They have a little oncology unit in Cranbrook,” she says. “I go there once a month for about three days now. It’s much more spiritually uplifting to be at home, and it’s nice to be closer to my friends and family.

Just being able to sleep in your own bed makes all the difference in the world.”

Fortunately, caregivers at BC Children’s Hospital know it is easier on children and their families when they can receive care closer to home. With this in mind, the hospital supported the creation of Child Health BC, an initiative aimed at ensuring all BC children have access to a consistent standard of specialized care, ideally close to home.

“It’s always good news to me when a young person is able to receive specialized care close to home,” says Dr. Maureen O’Donnell, executive director of Child Health BC. “That is exactly what we’re looking for.”

In the near future, children and youth in the Kootenay will benefit from an even closer link. Equipment

purchased by Child Health BC is being installed at the Kootenay Child Development Centre that will allow it to operate as a “telehealth” centre – a direct connection to BC Children’s Hospital via an audiovisual link.

Child Health BC’s activities took off after Overwaitea Food Group became the lead benefactor with a pledge of $20 million in support in 2007. TELUS and Scotiabank later made gifts of $5 million and $1 million, respectively. This support had an immediate impact, says O’Donnell. Pediatric clinics established with Child Health BC’s support in Nanaimo and Prince George have thousands of patient visits annually; additional travelling clinics are staffed by BC Children’s caregivers in communities across the province; and over 1,000 health professionals have participated in Child Health BC’s workshops.

O’Donnell credits Overwaitea Food Group’s donation with Child Health BC’s growing reach across the province, noting that it’s a perfect fit for an organization with a presence in so many BC communities. Overwaitea Food Group President Darrell Jones agrees.

“We’re committed to the health and wellness of kids and families in BC,” says Jones. “We’ve been

proud to support BC Children’s Hospital for more than two decades – and with the help of our communities, we’ve contributed millions of dollars toward hospital improvement projects, advocacy programs and important research initiatives. We’re grateful for the amazing support of our local communities, team members, customers and supplier partners who have all played a key role in making this fundraising success possible.”

Child Health BC is part of a larger transformation in the way BC’s children receive care, says Larry Gold, president of BC Children’s Hospital and Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children. The transformation also includes the construction of a new BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver.

“We want to ensure children have access to a consistent standard of care, whether they live in Smithers, Campbell River or Castlegar; and there will always be children who need care that’s only available in a children’s hospital,” says Gold.

BC Children’s Hospital Foundation has raised close to $170 million, including Overwaitea Food Group’s gift and $25 million from Teck Resources Limited, in its $200-million capital campaign to support construction of the new hospital and Child Health BC. Gold says that the new hospital, which will open in 2018, will be family-friendly, making it easier for families from outside the Lower Mainland to remain with their children.

Beyond the money being raised for the new hospital and Child Health BC, Gold says the hospital also counts on donations of about $14 million a year to support research, equipment purchases and training.

On June 1 and 2 BC Children’s Hospital Foundation will hold its annual Miracle Weekend celebration on Global BC, to raise the millions the hospital needs to cover its urgent annual needs.

“Every year people from across the province make donations in support of the hospital and it makes a huge difference,” says Gold. “Brooke Malakoff is proof of that.”

Brooke’s family has a direct connection to Child Health BC’s biggest supporter.

Brooke has worked at the Overwaitea in Fernie and her stepfather George Torresani manages the meat and deli department.

The store’s annual fundraising programs in support of BC Children’s have taken on special meaning, but Brooke and her family have always been keen to help their community.

“I volunteer as much as I can and anywhere I can,” she says. “Anything I can do to give back.”

In 2012, over 360 children from the Kootenays made over 900 visits to BC Children’s Hospital.

Keeping our highways in working order is essential for Canada Submitted From June 1 to 10, members of Trans­ portation Clubs International from across Canada will be celebrating National Transportation Week.

During the event, pol­ icy makers and stake­ holders in transporta­ tion infrastructure are promoting awareness about industry safety issues, innovations, and sustainability.

The average Canadian

thinks about transpor­ tation issues mostly when it concerns the daily drive. And there is good news on that front. New advances in road transportation systems include safety improvements, modi­ fications of road net­ works to accommodate the transition toward electric cars, and sus­ tainable road­building materials.

For cold­climate countries such as Canada, frost heaves

and black ice are the bane of drivers and governments alike: icy conditions lead to the need for regular road repair and cause costly driving acci­ dents. Administrators responsible for local, provincial, and federal roads and works are now beginning to look at special road surface overlays for bridges and other high­risk zones. These ice­defy­ ing surfacing materials are patented aggregates

mixed with epoxy seals to keep out water and chloride, which is used to salt roads.

Over in the Netherlands, the prov­ ince of Branbant will begin this year to print a stretch of highway with special temperature­ sensitive paint. When the weather is cold and the road vulnerable to icy conditions, “glow­ ing” snowflakes will appear on the road sur­ face to remind drivers to slow down and take

4-H Show & Sale 4-H Thanks You

THe Team! The youth of 4H invite you to join them for the Show & Sale at the Wycliffe exhibition Grounds on June 2.

Our year started with a very successful 4-H survivor camp that was held at Rock Lake. We had over 35 members attend as well as 20 adults. It was an amazing weekend

and thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. Thank you to the RDEK for supporting our camp In October, Wasa and South Country clubs held registration. The

Wasa club has 30 members and the South Country has 33 members. The projects range from Beef, Swine, Sheep, Horse, Photography, Crafts, Sewing, Foods, Goat, Poultry and Cloverbuds.

Weigh in for Beef was held on November 11, 2012 at the Triple Tree Ranch and 21 steers were weighed. We gathered over 600 pounds of food for the Fernie and Cranbrook food banks. Clubs were busy with Christmas parties and concerts.

Canada celebrates its 100th birthday and many different activities are planned. British Columbia celebrates 100 years in 2014. HAPPY 100th BIRTHDAY to 4-H in Canada.

After the New Year members were busy preparing speeches. Each member from the age of 9-12 give a prepared speech for 3-5 minutes the senior members age 13-19 give a 5-7 minute prepared speech. The District winners were Juniors 1st Colby Holt, 2nd Emily Lightburn, and 3rd Taylor Tracey, for the Seniors 1st Taylor Holt, 2nd Rachel Hawke and 3rd Becca Caron. In regional speeches juniors stayed the same and seniors 1st Rachel Hawke,

2nd Becca Caron and 3rd Taylor Holt, this event was held at the COTR and the members competed against the Creston region. Rachel will go on to Provincial competition in the summer.

Thank you COTR for your support.

On February 2, 2013 both the sheep and swine members weighed in their animals and will be selling 6 lambs and 20 pigs at the Show and Sale.

On April 20 Wasa club sponsored a FARSHA day that entailed safety with animals, ATV`s. internet, bicycle and many more aspects. It was attended by members from the whole region. Hats off to Tanya for all her hard work and an amazing job.

May 11 we held our Regional Judging Rally at Fort Steele Historical Park. The craft members displayed their projects, the sewing members modeled their outfits and ten members did educational displays. It was a very interactive day. Regional aggregate winners were Junior 1st Belle Boehm, 2nd Stephanie Alexander and 3rd Ryan Pierce and for the seniors 1st Taylor Holt, 2nd Jordan Thielen and 3rd Laura Serafini. Our day had been helped out

with the sponsorship of Columbia Basin Trust.

Kelcee Press and Laura Serafini went to Agri-Career Quest from May2-7, 2013. It was a great learning experience where they learnt the diversity of agriculture in our province.

Members have been busy working and looking after their animals preparing for Show and Sale on June 2, 2013 at the Wycliffe Exhibition grounds, program starts at 10:00 am. South Country did a Clip and Show weekend on May 12 and clipped cattle and the sheep were sheared on April 19th. Sheep, swine and beef members have been practicing showmanship and have all had husbandry checks done.

The Wasa horse club has been active working with their horses and learning new skills. Come watch all the 4-H`ers in the parade at Sam Steele Days.

The Cranbrook and District 4-H council and its leaders and members want to thank everyone for your support throughout the year.

Without your support we would not be able to do what we do best and that is build self esteem, responsibility and leadership within our members.

Bylaw Amendment - Hosmer The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Board of Directors is considering an application by Jennifer and Wilma Hutchinson to discharge Land Use Contract R21546 from their property title.
