To boldly go...... Former Kimberley Summer Theatre actor has role in new Star Trek film Arne Petryshen Townsman Staff

Actor Jeremy Raymond, originally from Cranbrook, boldly went where not many have gone before, onto the re-imagined sets of one of his favourite childhood series, Star Trek. Raymond has a part in the new Star Trek Into Darkness, currently in theatres and took some time Tuesday afternoon to chat with the Townsman about the high-profile role. Raymond said that it was director J.J. Abrams himself that chose him for the part.

Big Brothers Big Sisters in Kimberley CAROLYN GRANT editor@dailybulletin.ca

Last week Dana Osiowy and Carly Proudfoot visited Kimberley City Council to talk about Big Brothers and Big Sisters and the work they hope to do in Kimberley. Big Brothers Big Sisters is celebrating its 100th year in Canada this year, and it is growing in the this area. Council was told that there are now 133 matches

in Kimberley/Cranbrook, up from 26 in 2010. The program matches young people (16 and under), usually from single parent homes, with positive adult role models, who give them a couple of hours a week. Matches are carefully researched to make the best fit for both child and mentor. It is a program proven to work, Council heard. See Page 3

Last weekend the Kimberley Underground Mining Railway opened for the season (weekends only until June 23). Visitors from as far away as Germany and Holland enjoyed the train ride and tour. It was also a special weekend for volunteer engineer Rand Davis, as his daughter was married on Saturday, Rand’s relatives were on the train when it pulled into the downtown station on Sunday, to be greeted by an impromptu concert by the Kimberley Community Choir, of which Rand is a member. Quite a treat for all concerned. Rand, above right, with choir member John Allen, was even able to join the choir for a few songs between departures.
