Just over a month ago the community came together to support Golden Minor Hockey, and one of its most devoted volunteers, Curt Thorne.

The entire town spent two days glued to their computers, voting for Thorne in the Kraft Hockey Goes On Challenge.

Last week all that hard work paid off, when representatives from Kraft and Christie came through town to present Thorne and Golden Minor Hockey with their prize, a $100,000

cheque.

“I want to thank all the people who helped out. Carey (Alexander) for the nomination, of course my wife and all the other people here today who made us vote,” said Thorne at the cheque presentation at the Golden Arena on May 15.

“A big thanks to Kraft and Christie, this is really going to help our town.”

There is no word yet as to what the money will be used for, but the attention it has gotten has already helped the club.

The last several years have seen dwindling numbers for both players and volunteers,

but since the Hockey Goes On challenge, volunteerism with the organization has already seen a boost.

A large crowd gathered in front of the arena to see Thorne accept the cheque, and speak to the sports community.

“I know it’s my name on here, but I really accept this cheque for all the volunteers in town. Just about everybody standing here is a volunteer in some capacity. This is what these contests are about — volunteers who keep sports, not just our sport, but soccer and swimming, and all the other sports in our town, going. It’s big thing for all of us,” said Thorne.

The public are reminded to use caution near local rivers and lakes in the region. The Columbia River and its tributaries are on the rise and spring flood hazards can change rapidly.

Civic Centre kitchen set for renovations Jessica Schwitek reporter2@thegoldenstar.net Civic Centre Kitchen Golden’s new Civic Centre has been operating without a kitchen, but now that the Town has awarded a contract, construction can begin.

The Town advertised the contract, and received two bids, one of which did not comply with the terms of tender call. Council awarded the contract to Olsen Construction for $17,500 plus taxes. (Other costs may be incurred in regards to equipment purchases).

“So far the budget looks very tight,” said Chris Cochran, manager of operations for the Town.

At the moment, 100 per cent of the funds for the kitchen are coming from grants (from Columbia Basin Trust, and the Economic Opportunities Fund), but staff may need to look for other funding opportunities if the project goes over budget.

Roadway Line Painting The Town advertised for a new contractor to enter into a three-year contract for municipal roadway line painting, and has awarded the contract to Line West Ltd. “Our longstanding contractor announced their retirement,” said Cochran. G&D Line Marking, who had undertaken the line painting for the last several years, announced their retirement this past spring.

The total cost of the contract is up to $18,950

per year for 2013 and 2014, and up to $19,907 for 2015, plus applicable taxes.

Out of six proposals, four were compliant to the terms of tender, and Line West Ltd. had the best offer.

Holiday Inn Express Sign The Holiday Inn Express, currently under construction on 14th Street North, requested a Development Variance Permit to increase the size of their sign.

The hotel, located behind the Shell station on Frontage Road, is at a lower elevation than Frontage Road, and is requesting permission to install a sign that exceeds the maximum height limit.

It would be approximately four feet higher that the limit, and 7 1/2 square feet larger (which is the size of their corporate signage found across the country).

The Town’s sign bylaw is from 1991, is due for an update according to town staff. However , other more pressing issues have prevented that from happening.

“Staff certainly is of the opinion that we need a new sign bylaw to address a lot of these issues,” said Gary Smith, manager of development services.

Coun. Keith Hern voted against the recommendation, saying the business should comply with Town bylaws. Council voted to proceed with the Public Notice process for the Development Variance Permit Application, with Hern and Coun. Caleb Moss opposed.

Local fire departments learn about structure protection in Golden Darryl Crane editor@thegoldenstar.net Fire department members from Nicholson, Field and Golden came together on May 17 to learn about tactics and procedures in protecting housing in case of a fire that could threaten the community.

The event, hosted in Golden, gave firefighters the chance to work together under the watchful eye of Town of Golden Fire Chief, Ken McClure.

“It was a day of Structure Protection Unit (SPU) training. The idea is that the trailer (filled with equipment to protect hous-

es) we have will protect upwards of 20 to 25 homes once it has been deployed,” McClure said.

He added once the fire department gets a call that an area of houses is being threatened by fire, the system would be used to protect the homes.

“Once they are set

up they are effective.

We would combine this with sprinklers on the roof to do our best to protect the houses.”

Having the three departments come together for the event was also important for McClure.

“It is a good training session for the upcoming fire season.

APES playground receiving huge support Jessica Schwitek reporter2@thegoldenstar.net In October of 2012, the Alexander Park Elementary School Parent Advisory Council took on a much needed project, the building of a new playground.

Not only did they take on the responsibility, they also identified a need for greater accessibility in the community’s playgrounds, and decided to expand the project to include accessible features.

“What’s special about this playground is that it’s an accessible playground, which means that it has excellent access for children with mobility issues,” said Chenoa Paccagnan, president of the APES PAC. These accessible features increased the cost of the project, but Paccagnan and the PAC are pleasantly surprised by how the community has gotten behind the project.

They budgeted the playground at just over $150,000 when they began in October, and have already raised $116,000.

“When we first started we weren’t sure if Golden had an appetite for a fully accessible playground, because the rubber base adds significantly to the cost,” said Paccagnan.

The rubber base, with a roll down curb, makes the playground accessible to children with wheel chairs. And the flat access also helps children with visual impairments.

The PAC has also chosen some accessible equipment including many ground level play

areas, a bouncy bus that wheel chairs can roll around on, and two disc swings that allow kids who cannot hold onto a regular swing, lay down in the disc and swing.

Stan Metcalfe (Golden Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic) has 80 children going through his office with some sort of mobility issue.

“What he (Metcalfe) has said is that every single one of his children would benefit from this play area. It’s not just for children in wheel chairs. And even if it only helps one, isn’t it worth it?” asked Paccagnan. “It also eliminates barriers in a larger way. Children don’t see children with disabilities the way adults do. All they see is that children are playing in the area, or they’re not. Now they’ll all be playing together.”

“The best part of my job is getting kids playing,” said Metcalfe. “And the pieces that Chenoa and the PAC have picked will make a huge difference.”

The PAC gave themselves until June 2014, but are pleased to say they are ahead of schedule in their fundraising efforts. Given that the construction window for a school project is between May and October, it is likely that playground will be installed in spring, 2014.

Paccagnan also wanted to thank the project’s sponsors UBCM, the PAC, School District 6 (who will take over the installation and maintenance of the playground), the Rotary, The Town of Golden, The Columbia Basin Trust, the BC Tire Stewardship, and the Golden Firefighters’ Association.

We want to make sure people are safe and ensure them we do have the means to protect their homes,” he said. “This has been wonderful because everyone learns about

how to set up the SPU. In the event of a daytime deployment we can utilize people from all departments to come out and help us.”

The Golden Fire

Department has a new Facebook pages that will allow people to see some of the fire training while also learning about what the fire department does in the community.

Behind the Wheel Keep Back 150 Meters from Fire Apparatus Fire apparatus have a special privilege granted to no other emergency vehicle in British Columbia. You must not follow them within 150 meters or 500 feet unless you are also driving an emergency vehicle. Having never been a firefighter I was curious and thought that I would ask the experts and find out why this rule exists.

Fire apparatus is not always as nimble as the vehicles most people drive so they may not be able to easily pull away from traffic. Following at the proper distance leaves room for sudden stops, turns and unexpected lane changes. Following too closely could cause a collision that would prevent the fire truck from reaching the emergency and have significant consequences in both locations.

As a follower, you don't know what sort of emergency the fire truck is responding to. It may be a situation that you don't want to become involved in such as an explosion or building collapse. Proper following distance will keep you from becoming trapped in the situation.

Finally, hydrants are usually located at street corners in the city. Keeping back allows firefighters to lay hose in safety and you to turn off to an alternate route. Fire equipment and personnel effectively prohibit you from driving or parking in the block that they are on when responding to a fire alarm.

Golden students participate in Jump Rope for Heart Jessica Schwitek reporter2@thegoldenstar.net The students at Alexander Park Elementary School, and Lady Grey Elementary School participated in the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Jump Rope for Heart on May 16.

Jump Rope for Heart is a national fundraising effort that not only raises money for the foundation, but also teaches children about the importance of healthy lving and social responsibility.

LGES students played games on the school’s field, rotating classes between stations. Some of the school’s students volunteered to run some of the games at APES.

They helped the younger students play games like capture the flag, target, some games with water, and of course, jump rope.

The schools had been collecting donations, which will go to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Study shows how mountain biking affects Golden’s economy Jessica Schwitek reporter2@thegoldenstar.net People in Golden love to ride their bikes, whether it’s to work, on the Moonraker Trails, or downhill at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort.

But this activity is not only enjoyable for the residents, it is an economic driver as well.

Destination British Columbia conducted a study, funded through the Resort Municipal-

ity Initiative, summarizing Mountain Biking in Rossland and Golden, and its economic significance.

The study used the BCIOM (BC InputOutput Model) model, which aims to determine the total economic impact on the B.C. economy.

Data was collected between July and September of 2011, from mountain bike visitors to the two communities. It gathered information regarding the

incremental spending of the visitors to produce visitor spending profiles.

It followed mountain bikers who come to the area for both the KHMR trails, and other trails in the community.

No residents were included in the data.

The study found that mountain bike visitors to Golden spent a total of $930,000, which included an estimated $48,000 was spent on imports from other countries and $59,000

on imports from other provinces, with inventory withdrawals estimated at $6,000.

“Out of the total economic impact, the largest share of expenditure is made by consumers on services related to mountain biking activities, such as accommodation, food, and transportation,” stated the study.

Even though this spending is generated in supplier industries,

and there is no direct employment generated through the mountain biking tourism, the study estimates that nine jobs in supplier industries are supported by these expenditures by visitors.

The study also recognized the significance of output revenue, or taxes going out into the larger economy.

“Transportation, food and beverages represent a significant share of total spending by mountain bikers. Some types of expenditures (e.g., fuel and alcohol) include embedded taxes, such as transportation and alcohol, as well as GST and HST paid on the final purchase price. As a result, the tax impact associated with direct expenditures is quite high. Federal, provincial, and local tax revenue impacts (including commodity and income taxes) are estimated at $237,000.”

RCMP Report: Speed becoming an issue as weather warms up Darryl Crane editor@thegoldenstar.net Speeders beware The Golden/Field RCMP have noticed a rise in the number of incidents involving speeding vehicles around Golden.

As the number of vehicles starts to rise on the highways, drivers have been increasing their speed. During a one hour period on May 17, 30 vehicles were stopped and ticketed by local RCMP. Drivers are reminded to pay attention to speed limits when driving on the highways and in town.

Dog struck by vehicle?

A dog may have been struck by a vehicle east of Golden. The animal was spotted on the railway tracks by CP Rail workers who contacted the RCMP. Local members from the detachment and the dogs owner conducted a search for the animal but could not find it.

Thefts from vehicles reminder Golden/Field RCMP would like to remind people in the Golden area to not leave valuables in their cars.

People should not be leaving items such as cellphones, purses or cameras in plain sight in their vehicles.

Vandals on rooftops 06-12-2013 Golden/Field RCMP are investigating an incident of vandalism involving people getting on top of buildings in the downtown area. A number of satellite dishes were damaged in the incident.

The RCMP have noticed a rise in the number of incidents involving damage and spray bombings (graffiti) over the past few weeks in Golden.

An RCMP official said they will be keeping a close eye on the situation throughout the summer months.

They would also like to remind people that the decision to climb on the buildings can be very dangerous and lead to serious injury.

Anyone with any information on the incident in the downtown area or any of the graffiti are asked to contact the Golden/Field RCMP at 250344-2221.

Live wires 06-17-2013 A semi-trailer was involved in an incident at the Kicking Horse Rest Area. The vehicle hit a BC Hydro pole and had live wires covering it for a period of time. The RCMP said power was interrupted but live lines were sparking during the incident until the power was cut.

Darryl Crane editor@thegoldenstar.net A local family gathered with friends to take part in a run to support research and raise awareness about children who are stillborn. For John Denham and his wife Kristy Putnam, the effects of having a stillborn child is a concept they personally understand all too well.

“Almost a year ago, my wife and I lost our son Quinn, who was stillborn in childbirth. My sister-in-law, Lisa Sherrard, did a half marathon in Australia on May 19 with the goal of raising funds for a stillbirth foundation in Australia. We decided to have a run here to support what she was doing,” said Denham.

The monies raised in Golden and Australia will go to the Stillbirth Foundation Australia.

“It is an excellent organization because it promotes research much like the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) did back in the day. They promoted a lot of research and found simple things that demonstrated noticeable reduction in SIDS. We hope with stillbirth research we can find simple things that will reduce the number of stillbirth,” he said.

Denham added he hoped that events like this will help people learn about stillbirth.

“This is about awareness about stillbirth because it is one of those topics that does not get talked about a lot. It is like a dark,

I am honoured that she did the run for Quinn. I would have run with her if I was in Australia but I thought the least I could do is get together with a bunch of friends and run here.”

Denham was wearing a hat from Australia as a symbolic gesture to Sherrard.

The run went from Spirit Square in Golden to the Blaeberry, where the group was going to have a barbecue.

“Certainly my wife and I have felt the

support of the community since we lost Quinn. It has been incredible and doesn’t stop,” he said. “Thank you to the community of Golden. It is a remarkable community and I love the way it sticks by it citizens.”

Denham added a number of the people running in the event will also be running in the Banff Jasper Relay.

The relay goes through two National Parks for a total of 258 kilometres and is a fund raiser for the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada.

How did that happen?

A questionable idea

One of the constant questions heard on the streets of Golden and across British Columbia since the news dropped that the BC Liberals had won a majority government in the Provincial Election has been…How did this happen?

Repeatedly during the lead up to voting day, polls said the BC NDP had things well in hand.

By Darryl Crane taught us anything, it is that we should expect the unexpected when people vote in Canada.

Polls are a useful tool to gage where the mindset of the population is when heading to election day. However, they seem to have lost some of their accuracy over the years.

When the percentage of people voting was higher, polls were much more accurate in predicting who would win. In this election only 52 per cent of the people who could vote actually did. When people are polled, they state who they would likely vote for but when only about half of these people are going out to cast their ballot everything get bungled.

Elections are not about polls. They are about bodies in the voting box. The Liberal party got more votes and in the end it is all that matters. The NDP should have realized this could have happened. Just look at the last Canada wide election as an example of great upsets in politics.

The orange crush surge in Quebec for the federal NDP party was something that no one saw coming. Suggesting it at the start of the last election in Canada would have made people think you had very serious issues or no idea what you were talking about. But the fact is, under the leadership of Jack Layton, the NDP pulled off one of the greatest upsets in Canadian political history.

The lesson that should have been taken from this event is that anything is truly possible.

Of course there is another side to this election as well.

The Liberal party in B.C. spoke as much about how terrible life would be under an NDP reign, as they did about what they would do if they were elected. It has been proven time and again that people who are scared will head out to the ballot box.

From that perspective, the people running the Liberal campaign made a great play to get their people elected. When the campaign started many people in B.C. and certainly many local people talked about how tired they were of the Liberal party. If you cannot make people like you for who you are heading into a campaign, then your job is to try to figure out a new strategy to get your people elected.

That is what the public relations machine of the Liberal party did. They found a weakness and exploited it. In this case it was enough to get their people back in power when no one saw it coming.

Watching the election on the television, when the Liberals jumped out to a early lead, one thing was said over and over again. “It is only early” was repeated by many of the people watching the story develop.

Early became later and eventually the truth was there for all to see. As we all now know, the change predicted never did come and the supporters of the NDP have to be left with what must be a sour taste in their mouths.

But the grounds are still being used by individuals who like the game, and is especially used by the tourists from the camp grounds, and for travellers to sit under the trees and have their lunch, and take a break.

We were always proud when travellers would stop in and say, ‘what a beautiful place.’ It was made that way by dedicated members of the Horseshoe club, who put in years of hard labour to clear all the brush, and haul it away in our pickups, and fill the holes for levelling.

We met with Town Council in 1991 to see what they

thought of our idea for a Horseshoe Club, myself, Lyle Cutler, and Bill Wright, “The Bandit.” His Worship Fred Demmon was mayor, and councillors Stan Lim, Roy Nixon, Miriam Elkington, and the others have escaped my memory. The answer was unanimous, to go ahead, as long as we saved as many trees as possible, try to make it as a park setting, and keep the grounds clean at all times and appealing to the eye from the street.

We did that for 19 years. Your idea might be a good one Mike, but to do away with the tourist park and cut all the trees down is wrong. Put it somewhere else.

Local campaign saw four strong options

The provincial election is now over, and although the results (at least locally) were not a huge surprise, I must say I was pleasantly surprised during the campaign.

There is a common conception in many ridings in this province that there are only two legitimate options.

A vote for the Conservative or Green candidate is a wasted vote, and in the end will only benefit the party that you don’t want to win.

The Columbia River Revelstoke riding proved that idea wrong. There were four strong candidates who expressed their views, and also acknowledged the financial realities the provincial govern-

ment is in.

Earl Olsen (BC Conservatives) and Laurel Ralston (Green Party) threw their hats into a tight race between incumbent Norm Macdonald (NDP) and Doug Clovechok (BC Liberal), who had ample time to prepare his campaign.

I had assumed the two relative newcomers would be completely overshadowed by Macdonald and Clovechok.

I was wrong.

The crux of the campaign, for me, was the All Candidates Forum hosted in Golden a week before the vote.

I expected the evening to be a battle between two political heavyweights,

with two rookies either struggling to keep up, or fumbling with nerves.

Olsen and Ralston not only held their own, in some cases they completely stole the show.

They both spoke clearly and passionately about what they believed in, were well educated about provincial issues, as well as their party platforms, and were also personable and approachable in a community that neither of them live in.

The Conservative and Green Parties struggled at the voting booths both locally and provincially.

But I am very impressed with the campaign that was run locally.

Please contact Karen Cathcart at the College for more information Making Sense of May 14 With the 2013 BC election behind us, let me offer my thoughts on the outcome. As a strong supporter of the NDP, the question is, what happened?

Firstly, the polls were so wrong, but did they affect voter behaviour? We used to have a saying in the 1970s and ‘80s that we never wanted the polls to show the NDP winning, we always needed to be the underdog.

The polls have three effects on the NDP vote now. The first is to discourage soft NDP supporters from bothering to vote – why bother, the NDP is going to win anyway, people say. The second effect is to rally the anti-NDP vote and encourage them to stop an NDP victory. The third is to make it easier for a few NDP voters to vote Green,

the protest vote.

Clearly, all three of these factors were in play this time around.

Secondly, Christy Clark successfully rallied the anti-NDP vote at the last minute. The attack ads, the “stop the NDP” rhetoric, and her ability to shift the focus from Liberal failures to a fear of the NDP worked well.

Thirdly, Adrian Dix, bright and sincere, did not keep control of the campaign. I felt the air go out of the tires on the NDP bus on April 22 when he announced his opposition to the Kinder-Morgan pipeline expansion. This announcement was politically unnecessary and made the NDP look like the anti-development party instead of the thoughtful protectors of the environment.

Likewise, Dix did not respond strongly

enough to the last few days’ allegations.

His calm, rational manner just began to look weak and ineffectual. People will trust geeks, but the geek must inspire confidence. Think of Bill Gates.

Thirdly, whatever their motivation, “last minute Liberals” showed up and swung the outcome. These were the past Liberal supporters who had complained about the Liberal Government since the HST debacle began four years ago.

Some of these people would have voted Conservative as a protest, but got to the polling place only to find out in most ridings there was no Conservative candidate after all.

They simply could not, after all was said and done, vote NDP and in particular elect Premier Adrian Dix as he was being presented by Christy Clark. It only took one in twenty voters to do that to completely

reversed the expected outcome.

It’s not that the Liberals received an exceptional vote. The 45 per cent they got is what they received in 2009 and 2005.

Forty-five per cent is how many voted to keep the HST in the referendum.

As Dave Barrett said after his 1975 loss, the NDP just didn’t get enough votes to win.

The sad comment here however is voter turn out. As in 2009, neither party inspired voters, especially young voters to get out to vote. Even with such a strong anti-Liberal feeling for the past few years, the NDP were unable to convert those dissatisfied masses into voters. Wrong leader? Wrong issues?

I am lucky to have two sisters that I am close with.

However, close doesn’t always mean we see eye to eye. Last week my sister and I were disagreeing about politics.

My sister made a comment that I took very personally.

I was so upset I couldn’t even finish the disagreement.

Later that night I called my sister back and told her how surprised I was that I was unable to talk while feeling so upset.

I see similar reactions in my young children, aged three and six, when they are fighting.

The six-year old is taller and thinks faster than her younger brother. When they are fighting over a toy she can get her own way by putting it out of his reach.

or start screaming. I catch myself telling them to “use your words” but the reminder on its own doesn’t actually help them to do so.

When emotions run high communication is difficult for both children and adults. When parents teach their children the language and skills to manage emotions, children grow into individuals who have better relationships at school, at home and at work.

Here are a few tips to help your children communicate about emotions: Help toddlers learn the names of emotions (happy, sad, mad, tired, and scared). Talk about your own emotions and the emotions of characters in books and on TV. Help children learn to regulate their own emotions.

Show them how to take a few moments to breathe when emotions run high and how to come back when they are feeling calmer.

Give children the words instead of telling them to

“use your words.” When you see your child expressing himself by hitting or using other unacceptable behaviours, tell him what he could say instead. For example, you can say “Scott tell Suzie how you feel.

Teach your children simple phrases that help them talk about emotions.

For example “I don’t like that” and “please do something different” are very useful during conflict.

Older pre-schoolers and elementary school age children are very capable of explaining their feelings with the formula of “when you ____ I feel _____” Calmly coaching children to communicate in times of high emotion and modelling these skills yourself can help children become successful communicators.

These valuable communication skills help children become good problem-solvers and feel more confident about their relationships with others.

Alternate School hosts art opening at Youth Centre Jessica Schwitek reporter2@thegoldenstar.net The Golden Youth Centre got a little more colourful last week when the Alternate School had their art show opening on May 15.

The students at the school had been working for six weeks with local artist Janis Dyck, learning about painting techniques, and getting some pieces ready for the show.

“I approached them. I’m an art therapist, and I thought it would be good to do something with the kids,” said Dyck.

“They do have some sort of art, but this was just a bit more in depth.”

In the six weeks, nine students explored acrylic painting techniques.

“We did specific exercises within the six weeks, exploring different styles, and looking at a specific type of muse,” said Dyck.

“Out of those, they chose what they wanted to do for the final project.”

Each student painted a large piece for the show, and also included as many of their previous projects as they wanted.

One Alternate School student, Zoe Simard, put up four paintings in the Youth Centre.

“I’m really happy with how they turned out. I think you can definitely see everyone’s personalities in their projects,” she said.

Admittedly, Simard was not an art enthusiast before the six week program, but has since found a passion for it.

Rockwater hosts Canadian Idol runner-up Golden Star Staff reporter@thegoldenstar.net Theresa Sokyrka will be bringing her personal brand of music from across the world to the Rockwater Grill and Bar in Golden on May 22.

Sokyrka gained cross Canada fame almost ten years ago when she was the runner up of season two of Canadian Idol.

Since then she has gone on to record a certified gold album and released a sophomore album Something is Expected, consisting entirely of original music.

Over the years, since her experience on television, Sokyrka seemed to be able to stay away from the typical pop star route that seemed to be laid out for her.

She enlisted the help of producers John Collins and David Carswell (New Pornographers, The Evaporators), and Mike Timmins (The Cowboy Junkies) to provide the musical backing that allowed her songs to come through to any audience.

For the past ten years, Sokyrka has been crisscrossing Canada, never staying in one place for long.

“Sometimes I feel that the only reason I move around so much is because I’m afraid that getting comfortable would create a monumental writer’s block,” she said on her website. “I’ve always been someone who craves excitement. There is noth-

Fantasy world revealed at art show at Jita’s Cafe Darryl Crane editor@thegoldenstar.net A world of fantasy will be unveiled at an art show opening for the work of Joni Young at Jita’s Café in Golden on May 25 from 5-8 p.m.

Young has been a painter for 16 years and credits a long line of artists in her family who inspired her passion over the years.

“I have always loved art. My mom is an artist and many people in my family are artistic. I have just always been doing it,” she said.

“My mom is the portrait artist in the family and my daughter seems to be following in her footsteps. My sisters are also very artistic along with my uncle and many other people.”

Young is a well known art teacher in Golden, who works with both children and adults.

“My work is known for being colourful.

I am sure that’s what everyone else would say as well. I am well known for my use of colour but I also do black and white paintings.”

Young has used her talents to paint 12 murals around Golden including a fantasy piece at the library in Golden. She said the fantasy theme will be evident in the works on display at the upcoming show.

“With this show I really wanted to do dreamy, fantasy scenes. I did not look at any pictures and just wanted to see what would happen with no plans on what I would paint.”

Rockets hold spring camp in Kamloops Darryl Crane editor@thegoldenstar.net The Golden Rockets season might be months away but that did not stop players hoping to make the team and the teams coaches from heading to a spring camp in Kamloops on May 18-19.

Head Coach of the Rockets, Ty Davidson, said it was a great weekend in Kamloops for the team.

“It was successful. We were able to get over 40 kids out to the camp. Some were veterans but there were also many players coming out of midget hockey,” he said.

Players from across British Columbia and Alberta showed up to try and win a spot on the Rockets for next season.

Davidson said there were a number of players who turned his head during the camp and impressed him with their strong play.

“I think if you look at our returning cast of players, we have a lot of skilled, offensive hockey players up front. So one of the things we are looking for are grinding, physical, hard to play against, third and fourth liners to balance out our lineup,” he said. “On the back end, we have five returning defensemen so we are really only looking for two or maybe three defensemen. We are looking for someone who can move the puck well.”

Overall Davidson was pleased with the effort he saw at the camp.

“I think that if we can walk away with three or four kids from this camp, it will be deemed a success.”

Davidson also said he was happy to see so many returning players come out and step up during the camp.

It was a great day at the Golden Museum as the Amuse Troupe held a Spirit Fair for families in Golden.

Amuse member Jared Kotyk said the troupe made the decision to have the fair so people in town could come together at a family friendly event.

“It started off two years ago…we wanted to do a Spirit Fair or May Day like they used to do in the past in Golden,” he said.

Last year the event could not be organized but the Amuse Troupe never gave up the idea

“We enjoyed it a lot two years ago. We believe it is a good event for the community,” Kotyk said.

When asked how the event went Kotyk said, “It was amazing…that is about the best word to describe it. There was a lot to do and it was packed with fun.”

Kotyk added there was lots of music, kids with balloons, face painting and magic wand making to keep people entertained.

“That is the only reason to do an event like this. We are here for families to have fun on the long weekend and give them something magical to do.”

Golden Moments: Remembering a simpler time in Golden Darryl Crane editor@thegoldenstar.net

Shirley Sova has spent her life living in and around Golden and remembers a simpler time in the area.

“I was born 13 miles south of Golden in a farm house,” Sova said.

In her youth Sova went to McMurdo Public School before attending Parson for her high school education.

Sova said she had to ride her bike six miles to go to school but sometimes she would get a ride from local people.

“The creamery truck and sometimes the government trucks would pick us girls up in winter. The creamery truck was from the creamery in Golden. They would pick up the cream from all of the farmers along the road on Tuesdays and Thursdays so they could make butter for the community,” she said.

The family moved a little closer to the school in the late 1940s. At the time there was a school bus that could carry nine students.

“Well there were 10 kids and I was the oldest so I had to walk to school anyways. It was fine because I would get one dollar a day for walking

to school from the school board,” she said.

There was one incident on those walks that left a lasting impression on Sova.

Her family noticed a cougar had been in the area.

Her brother made the decision that he would try and track the animal.

“The cougar had walked in my tracks as I went to school that morning. My brother Harold tracked the animal and killed it before it got to me. It was nine feet from the tip of its nose to its tail.”

She said she never liked cougars before this incident and really did not like them after.

Sova spent most of her childhood living on a farm and said she had a wonderful life.

“I grew up on a farm. We grew all of our own vegetables and meat. We had chickens and geese as well.”

She also spent time during her childhood swimming near her farm. She was hurt one time when a friend accidentally hit her in the chin with a rock while he was skipping stones.

She explained that her family was lucky because they had a model T which they drove to Golden to see a doctor.

“I was only nine-yearsold. He put a clamp on me and it hurt so much that I jumped out of the chair and took off down the road with my mom chasing after me,” she said.

Before getting a car, the family would make their once a week journey to Golden by horse and buggy or sleigh in the winter.

During the winter trips her mother would do what she could to keep the children warm.

“The trips were not bad because mom would always put hot stones under the blankets by our feet,” she said. ” Sova said it was always fun to come to Golden and she does have fond memories of those trips.

“I remember coming into the creamery with my mom so she could get her cheque. One time I saw this big vat of butter. I put my hand (which was very dirty) right across the top of the butter. The owner just laughed at me, though my mother was very upset.”

Another store she enjoyed going into was owned by Bill Wenman “I remember going into a shop owned by Bill Wenman. It was a bicycle/shoe/

harness shop. He could fix just about anything in that shop,” she said.

One other memory she has from those trips involved a women who used to make a walk to and from Golden once a month.

“I remember a little old lady who lived at nine mile.

She weighed 98 pounds and would walk to Golden to get a 100 pound sack of flour. She would pack it on her back and walk home. If you offered her a ride she would politely say she was enjoying her walk.”

Sova now lives in a local trailer park that looked very different back in those early days of her life.

“The trailer park area where I now live was nothing but a hay field back in those days.”

Living outside of town people would have small events and celebrations which Sova said she now misses, “One thing I wish they would have is a good old Christmas concerts. We (as kids) used to enjoy that. We were all involved and everyone would get a gift afterwards,” she said.

Of course like most young men, he has his hobby, but in this place we will not disclose any of his boyish fancies, and we will most heartily recommend him to any lady wishing a boy to raise.

This ploy must have worked because two months later one of the bachelors married at the Episcopal Church in Donald.

Golden’s community garden centre open for the season Jessica Schwitek reporter2@thegoldenstar.net Seven years ago, Pam and Tyler Tetrault took a chance on Golden, and their vision of owning a community garden centre, and have never looked back.

The pair met at business school, and soon found that they needed to make a change.

“Tyler’s mom had a hobby greenhouse, and I had a hobby tree farm. We decided we wanted to do something different, it was more for the lifestyle,” said Pam. The Tetraults had just begun a family, and wanted to find a profession that would allow them to work, and still spend time with their family.

“That was the main reason we wanted to make a change. We were either going to have to work 9-5 jobs and put him into daycare, or come up with something different. So this is what we came up with so that we can work from home, be with our kids, and lead an active lifestyle in the community.”

So they moved to Golden, and opened up Mountainside Gardens, but not before making sure they knew what they were doing. Tyler went back to school at Olds College, and took the Journeyman Landscape Gardener program.

“I wasn’t going to put everything behind it unless Tyler was educated in that. And I’ve been kind of self taught from him. But I think it’s super important to have the base knowledge of everything. If you don’t have that, it’s hard to offer your customers the best,” said Pam. Mountainside Gardens has just about everything to fit your gardening needs. They have a wide variety of flowers, trees, shrubs, hanging baskets, seeds, soils and fertilizers, tools, and garden art and decor. They also provide gardening services such as landscaping, maintenance, and custom growing.

“I think a lot of people think that we’re just flowers, just bedding plants. And before we moved here, that’s all that Golden seemed to have, places that come and open up in the busy season with flowers. We offer a lot more than that,” said Pam. “We won’t sell someone something just because we have it for sale, if it’s not the right product for them. It’s important that they get what they need, and that we sell

Mountainside has grown and expanded almost every year, offering something new for their customers. The Tetraults are busy raising a young family, but in the future would like to have a year round garden centre, when they have a little more time.

Golden Star Staff reporter@thegoldenstar.net The BC Coroners Service is warning residents to take extreme care near streams and rivers which are currently running much faster and higher than normal.

People can significantly underestimate the force that can be unleashed by a fast-running river, said Chief Coroner Lisa Lapointe, and do not realize how different it is from the quiet stream where they regularly swim, raft or paddle.

Three such deaths already have occurred this spring: two young men swept away in Golden Ears Provincial Park, and a young woman who fell into Swift Current Creek near Valemount.

If a river is running quickly, it only takes about 15 1/4 centimetres (or six inches) of water can sweep a person downstream, and a little over six-tenths of a metre (or two feet) of water can carry away most vehicles.

According to the Coroners Service, the bank of a fast-running creek may look stable but such banks are often eroded by the water and can collapse with the added weight of a person standing on them. Moving water or standing pools of water also can contain dangerous debris, so no one should try to walk or drive through them.

The warning comes as the BC Coroners Service releases its newest report into Accidental Drowning Deaths, covering the five-year period from 2008 through 2012. The report looks at a total of 397 deaths over the five-year period. Of those, 58.7 per cent occurred in the summer months of May through August.

The statistics make clear the danger of mixing alcohol or drugs with water-related activities. Of all deaths recorded, impairment by alcohol or drugs was a factor in 40.2 per cent of the cases.
