Karm Ahuja was holding her baby daughter’s tiny hand, just after she had emerged from four hours of open-heart surgery.

Maya appeared so tiny in the full-sized hospital bed, and she was connected to a frightening collection of tubes and machines.

The four-month-old looked up at her mom and, before Karm could make a connection, the baby went blank. The beep of the flatlining heart monitor was followed by controlled panic.

A nurse pushed Karm out of the way, and a cardiologist came charging into the room.

Karm and her husband, Gary, were escorted by another nurse to a private waiting area.

“She’s gone. I don’t think they’re going to be able to revive her,” Karm said through her numbness.

All Karm and Gary could do was wait.

It’s been a week since Abbotsford and Mission voters appointed two new Liberal MLAs, and life for both of them is about to change dramatically.

Simon Gibson (AbbotsfordMission) and Darryl Plecas (Abboutsford South) are both making significant changes to their present careers in order to take on their new provincial representative roles.

Reflecting back on election night, Coun. Simon Gibson said he was more nervous than he expected, and even he was surprised by the results.

But, he noted that he campaigned until the last minute and has strong support from the Liberal Party.

“I think it was a combination of excellent campaigning by our leader and I also acknowledge that I was quite well-known in much of the constituency.”

With Gibson moving to the legislature, he will no longer participate in Abbotsford city council.

He referenced his opponent John van Dongen as an example, pointing out he received about 5,000 votes as an independent.

“Part of what I’ll do is carry on his (van Dongen’s) tradition of good work.”

He said he can achieve that goal if he is “working as hard as John did,” and “make sure I get stuff done.”

As for the election results, Plecas said he was one of the few people who was not surprised by the results.

He said early on he predicted the percentage of the NDP vote. Plecas believes the pollsters’ sampling was skewed.

According to Plecas, polling companies don’t sample the right group of people and don’t factor in that 50 per cent of them don’t vote, even though “they tell you they will.”

The biggest factor they missed was “the human spirit.

“People want to be confident, people want to see that the glass if half full and Christy Clark exemplified that.”

Pat Christie: Woman of the Year

Honoured for her work assisting and mentoring new immigrants Pat Christie was named the Myrtle Evertt Woman of the Year last Wednesday night during a gala celebration at the Garden Park Tower in Abbotsford.

The event was hosted by the Business and Professional Women’s Club of Abbotsford.

Five women were nominated for the annual award, presented to a woman who makes a difference in the community as a role model for other women.

Christie is the coordinator of the Employment Mentors’ Program in Abbotsford Community Services’ multicultural and immigrant integration services department.

The evening program noted that she works with the business community to mentor new immigrants, helping them to maximize their opportunities for economic, social and political engagement.

Christie has opened many doors for women from all over the world who now call Abbotsford home.

Her confidence and commitment to equality are evident in her ability to take risks and try out new ideas. Christie has made an incredible impact on the lives of both newcomers and established members of the community.

An emotional Christie accepted the award, thanking her colleagues for all their support. She told the crowd that the award also honours the efforts of all of the people she has been able to help.

Pat Christie was named as the Myrtle Evertt Woman of the Year last Wednesday night.

Other nominees recognized at the evening celebration were Wendy MartinStroyan, Wendy McClelland, Wendy Neufeld and Vicki Raw. The annual Myrtle Evertt Woman of the Year Award and ceremony was established in 1994 to recognize and honour local women for achievement in business or in a profession.

The award was named in honour of the first recipient of the award, the late Myrtle Evertt, who passed away at the age 87 on March 5, 2006, leaving a legacy to inspire woman and men.

Evertt was a teacher and tireless community supporter. She also became a registered nurse in B.C. at the age of 76. Among her many accomplishments were the creation of the B.C. Society for Handicapped Children in the 1950s (now called the Variety Club of BC); she was the founder of the Lower Mainland Senior Citizens Housing Association; a director of the BC Lung Association and; along with her husband Ben, helped created the 30acre Heritage Valley Resort in Abbotsford.

As part of the evening’s agenda, daughter Deanna Evertt delivered a moving speech about Myrtle, recalling memorable events and details about her mom.

NewsBytes SCIENCE FAIR MEDALS Three Abbotsford students took home prizes at the Canada-Wide Science Fair – the highest level of science fair competition in Canada – in Lethbridge, Alta on May 16.

Baneet Braich, a Grade 8 student from Abbotsford Middle School, took home a silver medal and $2,300 in scholarships for her project “Asbestos in Swift Creek.”

Gurmeen Banipal and Charanpreet Mahal, Grade 10 students from Dasmesh Punjabi School, took home a bronze medal and $2,100 in scholarships to share for their project “Sensing the Way.” Over 1,000 student finalists, delegates and judges from across Canada participated in the 52nd annual event, with 73 participants from B.C. and the Yukon.

The event is set for Friday, June 21 and guests will have the opportunity to find out what makes Abbotsford the agricultural capital of Canada by touring a variety of local agriculture businesses.

A long list of departing MLAs – both Liberals and New Democrats – are now in line for substantial pensions, whether they retired voluntarily or were defeated at the polls.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation estimates the total payouts to MLAs who didn’t win or seek re-election could top $26 million. The government injects $4 for every dollar politicians contribute, and the resulting pensions are also inflation adjusted.

“The MLA pension payout ATM is spitting out cash at a rate taxpayers can only dream of,” CTF B.C. director Jordan Bateman said. “A dozen former MLAs will soon join the million-dollar pension club.”

Randy Hawes in Abbotsford-Mission, who decided not to run again, will receive an estimated $847,000.

Departing NDP MLAs in the Lower Mainland and their estimated payouts to age 80 include: Surrey-Fleetwood NDP MLA Jagrup Brar ($555,000), Delta North NDP MLA Guy Gentner ($500,000), CoquitlamMaillardville’s Diane Thorne ($461,000) and HAWES Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge MLA Michael Sather ($490,000). Several others, including Port Moody-Coquitlam byelection winner Joe Trasolini, get nothing because they have less than the six years of service required to

qualify.

Outgoing Liberal MLAs include: Gordon Campbell in Vancouver-Point Grey ($1.7 million), Colin Hansen in Vancouver-Quilchena ($1.54 million), Barry Penner in ChilliwackHope ($1.35 million), Kevin Falcon in Surrey-Cloverdale ($1.09 million), Harry Bloy in BurnabyLougheed ($720,000), Chilliwack’s John Les ($835,000), SurreyTynehead’s Dave Hayer ($824,000) and Joan McIntyre in West VAN DONGEN Vancouver-Sea to Sky ($568,000).

First-year payouts range from $30,000 to as much as $98,000 in Campbell’s case.

He noted the B.C. Liberals ran against “gold-plated” pensions in 1996 and then NDP premier Glen Clark brought in a fairer, dollar-for-dollar system. But the Liberals in 2007 brought back generous pensions and let MLAs buy back missing years of service.

The CTF didn’t include Premier Christy Clark in its calculation, but says if she doesn’t get a seat elsewhere her lifetime pension would be $1.03 million.

RCMP are reminding the public to check the security features of all the bank notes that they receive, including the new polymer series notes.

A small number of counterfeit $100 polymer bills have recently been detected in the Lower Mainland. The public can protect themselves by checking the security features of their notes or comparing suspicious notes

Peters had been arrested for allegedly breaching the conditions of his bail following an assault charge.

He had apparently consumed alcohol, contrary to his conditions, and spent two days in jail. He was released just two days before the riot on further conditions, including to keep the peace and be on good behaviour.

His lawyer, Vincent Michaels, indicated that Peters has not been in trouble with the law since the riot and works at two fulltime jobs.

“It is hard to reconcile that kind of person with the person we saw in those videos,” Michaels said.

He said Peters is “ashamed and sorry” for his actions and accepts full responsibility, as evidenced by his guilty plea.

Crown counsel had recommended a jail term of 12 months, while Michaels suggested four months.

With Marshalls set to open in two days, followed quickly by Bouclair Home and London Drugs, Highstreet is quickly entering its next phase of completion.

The three new tenants will join Walmart – which opened Jan. 25, 2013 – as the first retail outlets in the 600,000-square-foot open-air shopping centre located by the Mt. Lehman Hwy. 1 interchange.

More than 90 stores are expected to open once construction is complete at the end of September.

With an urban design, the three-level project will feature main-street-style shopping, situated above an abundance of covered parking.

Marshalls is set to open on May 23, followed by Bouclair Home (May 28) and London Drugs (May 31).

KWIATKOWSKI “It’s just the next phase of Highstreet and we will be continuing to have openings through the summer,” said Darren Kwiatkowski, executive vice-president of acquisitions and development for Shape Properties, the Vancouver-based company developing the shopping centre.

All of the new stores are in the same area so customers will not be inconvenienced by the construction elsewhere on the site.

Kwiatkowski said space is 90 per cent sold on the retail side, but there are some secondfloor office spaces that still need to be filled.

“The overall number is 85 per cent,” he said, adding active negotiations are underway with enough companies to more than fill the remaining spaces.

One of the more anticipated openings will be a new 11-theatre Cineplex VIP Cinema.

Low lights and bright Another election has come and gone, and once again, half of those eligible to vote in this province didn’t bother.

That’s just discouraging.

So is the fact the BC Liberals can win a clear majority in the legislature with less than half the votes, and thus dictate legislation for the next four years unimpeded. Is it any wonder why the other half feel disenfranchised?

When the Conservatives can garner close to 80,000 votes and still have no representation in the legislature, is it any wonder why so many British Columbians feel like they don’t have a voice?

Nevertheless, it’s the system that’s currently in place. There was an opportunity to move to a single-transferable vote system in 2009, but voters turned it down – with only 39 per cent in favour in that referendum.

Sixty per cent overall approval and

50 per cent approval in at least 60 per cent of the province’s electoral districts was required to adopt STV, – a system that more fairly reflects the actual number of votes for a candidate and party rather than seats won. However, the support fell far short.

Would voter turnout be any more robust if B.C. had adopted an STV system?

Impossible to say ... although given this province’s reputation of election apathy, it’s doubtful.

If there is a bright note to the May 14 result, it was this: those who did choose to exercise their democratic right clearly did so with little regard to the inevitable NDP victory consistently predicted by the polling companies and political pundits.

Clearly, the majority of those who turned out to the polls were voting for what they thought was right, not what they were told.

Other Hand On election day I was tasked with monitoring two rural polling places in the well-established and multi-generational communities of Bradner and Mt. Lehman.

The voters there, for the most part, could be described as traditional and, unlike much of the province, cast their ballots in greater numbers.

Not that the turnout there was earthshattering, but it was well above the 50 per cent norm averaged across B.C., and it was significant that when the ballots were counted they were firmly entrenched in ensuring the status quo was maintained.

What I found enjoyable about the 12 hours I spent shuttling between Bradner Hall and Mt. Lehman’s ANAVETS centre was seeing so many friends and acquaintances, which tells

you that most of the voters were well beyond their teens and twenties.

It was, on the other hand, encouraging to see a few youngsters voting for the first time. One family in particular caught my attention, not only because it was apparent their daughter was about to cast her first ballot, but because they were so obviously proud of the fact.

Before she entered the polling place, they took photos of her in front of the official posters beside the entry doors, and again afterwards.

That was, in my opinion, a family not only proud to participate in the power and duty of democracy, but was willingly and enjoyably instilling the strength and belief in participatory action for years and generations to come.

Along with the regular polling stations within the two halls were the provisions for people who were not registered in the area to cast ‘absentee’ ballots in the ridings they called home.

Rather moving that, and making me and many others in the hall feel not only proud but happy that we live in a world where, with one little mark on a sheet of paper, we have the ability to

What isn’t so prideful, however, is that half of the people in this province don’t take enough interest to vote, yet are among the first to complain when things don’t turn out the way they want.

They bitch about jobs, or the lack of. They whine that they don’t have enough money or are taxed to the max.

Yet they don’t take the time to learn

about what makes British Columbia, or Canada – or the world for that matter – tick.

They, children of our province and our country, literally sit back and let others make decisions.

They have, unlike the man who left Bradner Hall praising the opportunity to express himself, no pride in themselves when they choose not to be a part of what makes our way of life so strong, and for most, so bountiful.

When you realize that fewer than 25 per cent of those eligible to vote last Tuesday actually determined who would govern British Columbia for the next four years, it is shocking. Not that I am at all unhappy with how the election turned out, but I am disgusted that so few made the effort to feel good about themselves for being a contributing part of something – government – that is so significant in our lives.

Democracy has always been touted as “government for the people, by the people.”

Shame that so few of us really care about that principle.

Millionth fan expected at entertainment centre

Global Spectrum, operators of the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre, is expecting the arena’s one millionth fan to enter the building during the upcoming sold-out Carrie Underwood concert scheduled for May 23.

“Since the facility first opened in 2009, the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre has continued to attract high caliber entertainment for the people of Abbotsford and the Fraser Valley” said Abbotsford Mayor Bruce Banman.

“Had you asked me five years ago about the pos-

A public hearing has been dropped for two Abbotsford Police officers who, during a drug arrest, were filmed by a citizen who later posted the video on YouTube.

Doug Lemna and Daryl Young were scheduled to have the hearing conducted through the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner (OPCC), but a legal matter delayed the proceedings.

Lemna and Young had been filmed in October 2009 after detaining two men during what was believed to be a drug transaction in Ravine Park.

They arrested the alleged buyer, trafficker and another

man. Force was used during and following the arrest.

An internal investigation was conducted by the Abbotsford Police Department (APD) to determine whether the force was excessive.

In December 2010, the investigation concluded that the allegations could not be substantiated against Lemna, but could be against Young.

A copy of the decision was forwarded to the OPCC, which issued a notice of public hearing for the two officers.

Lemna then filed a petition in B.C. Supreme Court to have the hearing quashed, claiming that police complaint commissioner Stan Lowe did not follow proper proto-

More smoke alarms are being handed out across B.C. as part of a campaign to reduce preventable deaths from house fires.

It’s being spearheaded by the Fire Chiefs Association of B.C. and president and Surrey Fire Chief Len Garis says the free smoke detector giveaway is targeting the elderly, aboriginals and other low-income or vulnerable residents. “These folks are truly at risk and we have to be very diligent and mindful of that,� said Garis. “Working smoke alarms save lives.�

Research led by Garis with the University of the Fraser Valley found 70 per cent of fires over the past five years happened in homes with no working smoke detector.

He noted seniors make up nearly a third of B.C. residents who die in fires even though they comprise only 15 per cent of the population.

The campaign, backed by the provincial and federal governments and corporate donors, has so far pulled together 11,500 smoke alarms that are being distributed by fire departments around the province.

Smoke alarm maker Kidde Canada provided the initial 5,000 detectors and deep discounts on future purchases. The latest contribution came from Super Save Group, whose $20,000 bought another 4,000 Kidde alarms.

While many homes have smoke detectors, Garis notes too few people check them regularly. All smoke detectors should be replaced after 10 years and batteries should be changed annually.

Garis ALSO said a five-year survey found 23.1 deaths per 1,000 fires in unsprinklered buildings in B.C., compared to 1.2 deaths per thousand in sprinklered buildings.

Lemna was the subject of a criminal trial in April 2011, when he was

acquitted of assault in a different matter. In that case, he placed the toe of his boot on the face of a screaming suspect who was lying on the ground while being detained by police.

The judge acquitted Lemna, saying no injuries were reported by or to the suspect, and Lemna was justified in using the “minimal amount� of force to get the suspect to stop screaming.

Students talk shark finning with Fast MP discusses practice after Grade 8s send letters Kevin MILLS Abbotsford News

The ongoing controversy over shark fin soup has crept its way into an Abbotsford classroom.

As part of a class project, Grade 8 students at Colleen and Gordie Howe Middle School sent letters to Abbotsford MP Ed Fast, asking why the Canadian government has not passed legislation to ban the trade of shark fin.

On Monday afternoon, Fast visited the school to speak with the class. â&#x20AC;&#x153;How many of you believe that shark finning is wrong?â&#x20AC;? he asked the students, referring to the practice of removing a sharkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fins and then discarding the rest of the fish to die. â&#x20AC;&#x153;How many of you have already made up your minds that the Government of Canada should change the laws?â&#x20AC;?

The students had watched two films on the subject and learned about the practice from their teacher. â&#x20AC;&#x153;What I would encourage you to do, as

you grow up and become older, before you form final opinions, hear the views of other people. Otherwise you wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t come up with decisions that are balanced,â&#x20AC;? said Fast.

But he also warned that all viewpoints, both for or against, get â&#x20AC;&#x153;twisted a little bit.â&#x20AC;?

He encouraged them to look at all aspect of the issue before making a final decision. â&#x20AC;&#x153;By the way, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m against shark finning, just so you know,â&#x20AC;? he told the class, explaining that Canada does have laws that prohibit the taking of the fin and then leaving the shark to die.

He called it a terrible practice.

But he also said there are people who catch sharks and use the whole shark, fins and all, just like you would a tuna.

He said it wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be right to punish people who are not breaking the law by banning trade of the product entirely. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We want to make sure that when we make decisions weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not painting everybody with the same brush.â&#x20AC;?

He told students that the government works hard to ensure that any shark fin that is imported into the country is â&#x20AC;&#x153;legally harvested.â&#x20AC;?

apply for a court order on one of the following grounds: The affairs of the company are being or have been conducted (or the powers of the directors are being or have been exercised) in an “oppressive” manner; or Some act of the company has been done (or is threatened), or some resolution of the members has been passed (or has been proposed), that is “unfairly prejudicial” to one or more of the shareholders.

Oppressive conduct is described as “burdensome, harsh and wrongful, or lacking in fair dealing.” The oppression must be conduct affecting a shareholder in his or her capacity as a shareholder.

Unfair prejudice imports a lesser threshold. It means corporate conduct that is unjustly or inequitably detrimental to the legitimate interests of a shareholder.

The court has a broad power to remedy oppressive or unfairly prejudicial circumstances. The most common order of the court is for the complaining party to be bought out as a Shareholder.

The Business Corporations Act provides many other remedies for disgruntled shareholders.

Joyce places her husband’s picture by the fireplace.

His grin is framed by a sun-soaked lake landscape of water, trees and mountains. He looks content, settled in his canoe. Joyce took the picture just months before Keith was diagnosed with terminal cancer. “That was the first time we canoed Echo Lake” Joyce explains.

Keith died two and a half months later.

In Keith’s final days, Joyce and Keith were connected with a hospice outside of their community, as Abbotsford does not have a hospice of its own. “As soon as we got there Keith looked at me and said we made the right decision.”

Joyce says that being at Hospice allowed her to be Keith’s wife again, and not his caregiver.

“Hospice is truly death with dignity. All the staff and volunteers made me realize that someone else could help me carry the load. At Hospice the nurses explain things and are always there for a hug or a chat. At Hospice you can be a family again.”

Abbotsford is the only community in the region that doesn’t have a residential hospice. Currently, loved ones of dying people must travel to other cities to spend their precious final days and moments together. People often die in the clinical setting of a hospital rather than the warm, natural setting of a hospice building. That’s why the Abbotsford Hospice Society is building Holmberg House, a world-class end-of-life care facility for adults as young as 19 and their grieving families.

Holmberg House will be so much more than a building. It will be a refuge for the dying and grieving, a place where significant moments and lifelong memories will be shared. While nothing can erase the pain

that comes with loss, Holmberg House will give dying people and their loved ones the space to live through these moments with comfort, dignity, and quality of care.

icy that also included an investment component. They funded the policy with money that CRA required they take out of their RIFF account. They were fortunate that this was money they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t actually need to support them. They then established the Richard and Helen Randle Endowment Fund with the Abbotsford Community Foundation and arranged that their fund would be the beneficiary of the proceeds from their insurance. The premium payments of $25,000 earned them a tax receipt for that amount annually, which they could use to offset income.

ichard and Helen Randle retired to live in Abbotsford in the late 90â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, after years of crisscrossing the country. Richard served in the Armed Forces for 35 years; in the infantry, army, payroll and logistical services. His career as an army officer took him and Helen to every province in the country except PEI and Newfoundland, and he also did two tours with NATO â&#x20AC;&#x201C; one in Germany and one with the UN in Gaza. Helenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s teaching career took her from one-room classrooms in rural communities, to city classrooms in Kingston, Winnipeg, Ottawa and two years in West Germany, where she met and married Richard in 1957.

When making their plans they decided that the income from their endowment fund would be used to support the Abbotsford Symphony, Abbotsford Hospital, Fraser Valley Regional Library and to fund programs and facilities benefiting seniors.

After he retired from the Armed Forces, Richard worked as a financial services officer with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. Then Abbotsford became home for Helen and Richard where they shared their love of classical music and finally had an opportunity to put down roots in one place. So it is not surprising that when they were working with their Investment Advisor, Randy Hurd, CIBC Wood Gundy, in 1999, they would include plans to support the causes that mattered most to them.

What pleased them both about their decision to support their adopted community of Abbotsford, using insurance, Hurd said, was that by investing a relatively small amount after the tax credit is taken into account, they were able to create a significant endowment that will support the causes they care about the most in Abbotsford.

Butt comes to Mission

TALENTED TEENS Students from Yale Secondary School (top photo) presented the British Comedy “Cash On Delivery” last week at the local school.

Next year, the school plans to get swampy as it presents the tale of a green ogre with heart as they present the musical version of the popular animated movie Shrek.

MEI Secondary students (bottom photo) presented the classic story of The Sound of Music from (May 7-11).

The show attracted sold out crowds throughout the run.

Canadian comedian Brent Butt will perform in Mission on May 25.

The event takes place at the Clarke Foundation Theatre (33700 Prentis Ave.) at 7:30 p.m.

From small-town Tisdale to big-time small screen, Butt is one of Canada’s funniest and most successful comedians.

Also a gifted writer, producer and actor, Brent created the hit television series Corner Gas. Butt recently made the transition to the big screen, having completed shooting on his n e w feature film N o Clue which h e wrote BUTT a n d stars in.

“It’s tough,” Lions coach Doug Primrose acknowledged. “We’ve had really bad luck lately. We are definitely the better team, but they were the better team on the day.”

Primrose pointed out his team was missing two starters due to injury – star scrum half Spencer Miller, who has played on national age-class teams, broke his jaw at the provincial sevens tourney earlier this month and is out for the rest of the season.

Notwithstanding those absences, the Yaleans built a

But the Mariners dominated the early portion of the second half, surging ahead as the Lions took six consecutive penalties, including a yellow card to put them down a man for 10 minutes.

Yale made a late push, and appeared to score a game-tying try when Daniel Davidson dove in at the corner. The referee signaled a try, but the touch judge waved it off, saying Davidson had stepped on the sideline before diving in.

“When you’re missing two of your key players, and you don’t go out and play very well, then it’s a bad combination,” Primrose said. “We were almost able to pull it off, even though we played terrible.”

of penalty kicks.

The loss didn’t end up costing the Lions much in terms of seeding – they only slip from No. 3 to No. 4 in the AAA rankings heading to provincials. Opening-round games run on Saturday, May 25, and Yale plays Lord Byng at 4 p.m. at St. George’s School in Vancouver.

Two other local teams are also in the provincial field. The Robert Bateman Timberwolves are seeded No. 6 in AAA, and they play No. 11 Argyle at 2:30 p.m. at St. George’s.

In AA action, the No. 10 Rick Hansen Hurricanes hit the road to face No. 7 Clarence Fulton at Kelowna’s Parkinson Recreation Centre at 4 p.m.

“All the kids step up, try their best with smiles on their faces, and have fun. That’s the main thing. We have fun.”

Mouat’s distance-running stars, Alex Siemens and Callum Pilgrim, continued their remarkable dominance en route to individual aggregate awards. Siemens won the 800 metres, the 1500m and the 3000m in the senior girls division, while Pilgrim won the same races in the junior girls class.

It marked the third straight meet where Siemens and Pilgrim both swept all three events – they also achieved the feat at the Abby-Mission district championships and at the Upper Fraser Valley zone meet.

“You can run a 100 and a 200 and do the long jump and win all three, but that doesn’t stress your body as much,” Smith said. “For these girls, running the 3000, 1500 and the 800 in three days and winning all of them? Unreal.

And they’re good girls. They’re at the finish line, hugging everyone who comes in.”

The Knights made a bit of history, winning the senior girls aggregate title for the first time.

“Our goal was this, right here, from the beginning of the season,” noted Scott Visser, who coaches the Knights along with Jack Boersma.

“We knew we wanted to get our kids in different events, especially ones that score well.

We did well in things like the steeplechase, and intermediate and short hurdles.”

Abby Christian also finished second in the senior overall – an impressive feat for a smaller school. Visser attributed the success to a twopronged focus.

“We emphasize elite-level achievement for kids who are at that point, but we’re also very participatory,” he said. “We get everybody involved. For many kids, this is their only sporting event, and we work with them . . . to achieve their personal best. That’s what track is about.”
