Langley is most fortunate to be home to the Tidball family.

In keeping with inspirational stories, we interviewed Norm Rolston, the Langley resident who invented the Able Walker and changed the lives of millions of people worldwide.

George Tidball still tall in the saddle In 1969, George Tidball his wife Dianne and their family were living in a nice home in West Vancouver. “But,” George reminisces, “We had a horse. We knew we needed a bigger piece of property and we settled on a small farm on 222nd Street in Langley.”

Langley owes that West Vancouver horse a debt of gratitude considering the positive impact the Tidball family has made on the Langley Community.

George Tidball has been described a risk taker, a visionary and an entrepreneur. Add in rancher and farmer and you start to get close to painting a picture of the man. But he will be the first to tell you he is ‘not a one man show.’

George was born in Alberta and became a Chartered Accountant then a Certified Management Accountant. He graduated from the Harvard School of Business in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1961 with a Masters in Business Administration.

Adding his MBA to his spirit and vision, George was the first to introduce McDonald’s restaurants into Canada and attracted national attention and opened the first Canadian McDonald’s in Richmond in 1967.

The restaurants caught on and soon crossed the western provinces and went as far east as Ottawa. He opened thirty-two outlets before selling the franchise. As it turned out, the McDonald’s experience was just practice to hone his true passion, a restaurant of his own.

“I had always envisioned a casual dining spot,” explains George. “ A place where you could ‘come as you are’ and not have to tip a maitre d’ to make sure you didn’t get a table by the bathroom. I wanted the experience to be lively and fun where you could come anytime to a place I call a ‘blue jean revolution eatery.’ “ I was hoping to develop a change in people’s eating habits. By adding the salad bar we were not only promoting healthy choices but it encouraged people to get up and move around, talk, relax and enjoy their night out.”

The Keg experience spread quickly, expanding to all major Canadian cities and then moving to Chicago and Seattle. Eventually, over 90 locations were operating throughout the country. The success of the

chain was pioneered on an innovative business plan that shared ownership with key senior people fostering joint venture partnerships.

According to George, “The Keg’s success was based on everyone in the company pulling together. It’s about people doing their own thing within a framework of common values. It’s not a big company, it’s a lot of small companies.”

From 1971 until The Keg was acquired by a British interest, George expanded his restaurants, buying and selling a variety of other restaurant chains including The Old Spaghetti Factory and the Crock n’ Block and Corkscrew chains. George and his wife also incorporated Langley’s first Keg restaurant, The Keg in the Country, with their Thunderbird Equestrian facility on 200th Street in north Langley, now the site of the Colossus theatre complex.

In 1973, there were 450 people living in that area. If your horses or cattle got loose, a neighbour would phone and let you know. Everyone knew who everyone was up there and who the animals belonged to.”

“The Thunderbird Equestrian Center was the first of its kind in Langley. We provided show rings, stables and boarding facilities and we hosted many local, regional and national events there. We gained plenty of experience that moved along with us to the new facility.”

The Keg in the Country restaurant was attached to the Thunderbird facility and became a very popular destination restaurant for special occasions. The new restaurant is no longer attached to the equestrian facility.

The new Thunderbird Show Park is now located in the 24500 block of 72nd Ave. on a former dairy farm. It is one of North America’s premier equestrian facilities, hosting over six major Hunter and Jumper tournaments a year.

The 85 acre park has been developed into three hunter rings, four jumper rings, 2 indoor rings and eight hundred stables. Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the facility, a check of the calendar posted on their website gives an indication of the events running regularly from January through October. A recent Grant from Industry Canada provided funding for a ‘spectator village’ . The park continues to build and improve facilities for both spectators and participants and continues to draw people from around the world adding to both the local and Provincial economy.

In recognition of their contributions, George and Diane Tidball were honored in January as the recipients of the 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Horse Council of B.C. at their annual awards gala in Kamloops. This award recognizes individuals who have made exceptional contributions to B.C.’s equine community, demonstrating a lifelong commitment and dedication to the equine industry.

This award will be added to Georges recognition list. An inductee into the Jump Canada Hall of Fame in 2009, Inductee into the BC Restaurant Hall of Fame in 2005, and B.C . Business Magazine’s Entrepre-

None of the above awards mention that he was a team roping competitor in the Cloverdale Rodeo on a regular basis and was often found helping crews set up rodeo pens prior to the event, proving that ‘hands on’ means getting dirty some times.

“Langley has been very good for our family,” says George. “My children finished school here and now they are part of running the restaurant and the Show Park. The farm life has been good for them and has taught them a sense of responsibility, they are all hard workers.: “I am a big supporter of maintaining Langley as a farming community but we have to work at it. I worked with former Mayor Kurt Albert on the Rural Plan. I gave a series of speeches on the value of fighting to keep our farm land and develop wisely, integrating pockets of housing with farm land.”

“Young people today that want to farm can’t afford the land. We need to encourage support from or governments to provide funding sources to attract the true farmers not just the people who buy the land for speculation.”

George says his philosophy is really quite simple “Acquire the wisdom of your business. Know what it really takes to deliver against your product. Be a leader, not just an administrator.”

Michaud House

The House at the End of the Street

D

riving south on 204th street through Langley City you pass the commercial buildings, the apartment blocks and the Langley Lodge tower. Leaving sirens and honking horns behind you arrive at Michaud House tucked away along the bank of the Nicomekl River where it has sat quietly for over 125 years.

As I walk under the wisteria covered trellis I can smell fresh baking coming though the screen door. My knock is answered with a cheery ‘come-in’ and I walk through the door directly into some of the earliest history of the Langley community.

Sandra Reams is the caretaker resident and lives in the back half of the Michaud House, one of Langley’s Heritage Buildings.

Sandra places a basket of fresh biscuits and a jar of homemade jam on the table and pours a cup of tea. “The best stories begin with a pot of tea,” she explains.

The story of the Michaud family in Langley begins in 1878 when Maximilien Michaud purchased 600 acres of land from the Dunlap for his brother Joseph who had just arrived from Quebec. The only building on the location at the time was an abandoned ‘stopping house’ at the river’s edge on what had been known as Smuggler’s Trail.’

In 1888 Joseph Michaud built the building that currently stands next to Portage Park. An interesting story that indicates the pio-

neer beginnings of the location is that during construction, the family unearthed an Indian burial site. They transferred the remains to a new plot closer to 208th street.

The family operated a very successful hog and dairy farm and the property was eventually sold to the Beaulieau family who established a prize winning Holstein dairy farm .

The solid structure has stood the test of time. Built on a concrete foundation with balloon construction and using the master carpentry plans and skills of the day the building has weathered well. The house and property are currently owned by the City of Langley who purchased it in 1978.

The house was designated as an Official Heritage site on January 14th. 1980 and was restored under the direction of the Langley Heritage Society. The Michaud House Committee oversees the ongoing restoration and up keep of the building.

“The key to living here as a caretaker is to appreciate the building as it is and not to try to make it something else.” says Sandra.

“The floors are not perfect but the old hardwood and the visible pegs holding the boards in place shows the unique details of the building.”

“I do most of the day to day chores and my son and son-in-law occasionally help with the heavier things. This year I approached the Kwantlen Polytechnic University and their horticulture stuPublished by THE LANGLEY TIMES ■ MAY 2013 ■

dents came and got some hands on training pruning the trees and bushes, getting the lawns ready and donating some wonderful plants. They did a marvellous job and all it cost me was some brownies, cookies and a few jars of homemade jam.”

Sandra comes from a farming background in Northern Idaho.

“I love to throw dirt and grass around and I put in a small vegetable garden here each year. It is such a lovely spot and I take pride in helping to keep it looking good for the visitors. We have young mothers with strollers stop by but most of our guests are more mature folks out for a walk. They enjoy reminiscing about the old days.”

Sandra enjoys writing and finds the Michaud House is always an inspiration for a short poem or story. In her own words she journals some of her thoughts: The ambiance of the house is one of standing erect and holding, stating its place in time. The house sits on the river’s edge and the river itself has two lives. One, for the gentle moving river with it’s lovely curves and home to the ducks the then the river that responds to the rain, rising rapidly claiming more for itself, then receding quickly leaving it’s mark.

The old red shed in the back yard seems to go with the house.

The climbing roses grace the walls and always have to be carefully set aside to enter the world of garden utensils, leftover pots and the treasure of some previous gardener.

The steps to the basement provide access from the outside of the house. They are uneven, steep and mossy and indicate the

need for caution when entering. Through the spider webs, thick and sticky, we can view the hand hewn supports and square nails remind of us of construction from another time. The old and new are here as the new gas furnace shares the space with the square nails, two eras living in harmony in the basement.

The upstairs has four bedrooms, one with a cheery green floor and one with lovely old roses in the wall paper. There is an opening to the attic in the upstairs hallway leading to what I do not know, waiting to be explored. A house over 125 years old is a precious thing indeed, my privilege to preserve and enjoy.

There is no set schedule or program for tours of the Michaud House. Some local groups use the dining rooms for occasional meetings or others rent the facility for photography or special occasions such as small family events or tea parties.

“We don’t have large washrooms or catering facilities on site,” explains Sandra, ‘So we are limited to what we can host here.”

It doesn’t cost anything to stop by and have a look at a piece of Langley’s history and if you smell fresh biscuits, knock gently on the door, Sandra might have the water on the boil.

The Able Walker Inventing the Freedom

Langley Resident Norm Rolston will be the first to tell you he knew nothing of inventions, marketing or international selling. But that didn’t stop him from creating and distributing the Able Walker, considered one of Canada’s most significant inventions of the 20th century.

“Back in 1986, I got the idea for the Able Walker from watching my aunt Maida trying to walk across the floor pushing a kitchen chair,” Norman says. “It was a painful experience for her to move or bend so, using old shopping carts and a stroller, soon I had a walker that she could use to hold on to, to go shopping with. Well, her friends soon needed one like it and so on, and soon I couldn’t take a day off I was so busy building them. There were walkers around at the time I designed mine but, they didn’t have casters on the front so you could turn it. Mine had other features too, the handholds are at the front gave real support, and you can put on the brakes when you had to.”

Norm will share that he was born ‘dirt poor’ on a small Saskatchewan farm. “My family was in the transportation business. They started with ox teams, mule teams and eventually trucks and I guess I had that in my blood.”

In 1973 Norm turned a single crane truck into the Rolston Crane and Freight Ltd. which grew to 15 cranes and related equipment until he passed it on to his family. In 1986, Norm took out the patent on the Able Walker and began his new career.

“My wife Myrtle and I ran off a bunch of flyers with a picture demonstrating a woman using the Able Walker. It had a few lines describing it and the price, $259.50. We stuck these flyers up in every Laundromat, bulletin board, old folk’s homes, recreation and bingo hall from Vancouver to Saskatoon. We practically lived right out of the van. By the …CONTINUED

When medical people had their doubts I showed them my picture and letter from the Surgeon General and they backed down. Now I have doctors say to me, ‘Norman I wasn’t too sure about that at first. He was going to England to meet the Queen and they told him he couldn’t bring the walker on the plane. He told them he was going to meet the Queen and if his walker didn’t go, he wasn’t going.”

Norm has apple boxes full of testimonial letters from around the world and albums full of photos with celebrities such as George Burns, Margaret Thatcher, Juliette, Kitty Wells and Rita McNeil. “I was proud to present one to Annette Funicello when she contracted MS. Her letter was very touching.” “ Eventually I had to have the walkers manufactured in Taiwan to meet the demand and the pricing. My goal was to have 1 million people using this device worldwide, whether it was my design or someone else’s prototype.

Early on, my legal folks told me that whether I had the patent or not, the ‘Big Boys’ would eventually out produce me if it was successful. That was good knowledge because I resigned myself to the fact that if I was prepared to give my invention to others, they couldn’t take it from me.”

“I was very pleased that the Able Walker was giving people back their freedom and independence and that meant more to me than money. Six months after we started selling them I received a letter from a mother of a 13 year old boy who had cerebral palsy. He was walking and playing soccer for the first time in years using his walker. I knew that’s what this was all about.”

In 1993, Norm was especially proud to receive the Special Humanitarian Award, which recognized the profound effect the Able Walker has had on

seniors’ freedom and independence, at a conference in Pasadena. This was only one of many accolades and awards Norm and his walker received.

“The Los Angeles Times voted the Able Walker one of the Top Ten International Inventions of the 1990s, and recognized it as a device that improved the quality of life for all generations.”

Norm has also been nominated for both the Order of B.C and the Order of Canada although has received neither for his contribution to society.

He shrugs and smiles, “I guess I didn’t score any important hockey goals or get elected to anything.”

For all those coming along behind Norm has some valuable advice.”Believe in yourself. Your university education, not that I have any, lays a good groundwork for a beginning but it’s no meal ticket. Don’t forget the most important asset you have, common sense. Build from there. Education can be a help to you but don’t let it be a hindrance to you too. Some initials after your name don’t mean a thing in many cases.”

Norm has also produced some medical assist devices for portable oxygen tanks and even though he is now in his eighties, his mind hasn’t stopped.”

I see so many things out there that need doing. Pick something that needs some work to be done on it and improve on it.”

As I left Norm’s modest Langley apartment I passed a lady with a walker laden with bags of groceries. “That’s a pretty good load you have on there,” I commented. “Well I’d be absolutely lost without my walker.” she replied.

When

Angie Fruno saw the poster in the window of the Langley Arts Council’s gallery she knew right away that this was the perfect gift for her granddaughter. Her granddaughter, who had been very close with her father, lost him when he passed away unexpectedly a couple of years before. The poster described a new program where old VHS tapes, slides and photos could be converted to a DVD. At the back of her closet, Fruno had a few old VHS tapes containing footage from past Christmas’s and birthday celebrations. She contacted the Langley Arts Council and was the very first senior to take part in the project. In essence she was the project’s “guinea pig.” On the tapes were lots of great memories that she didn’t want to lose. With her granddaughter’s birthday coming up, this would be a very timely gift.

Making Old Memories New Again is volunteer driven and encourages seniors to create and share arts. Carla Robin spearheaded the project on behalf of the Langley Arts Council because saw a need “The reason I created this program was because in many families there was only one old photo album that granddad or grandma held on to. Photos and memories fade with time but with this new technology memories can become heirlooms just like in the case of Angie’ Fruno’s gift to her granddaughter.” said Robin.

Often when people buy a new DVD or Blue ray machine they usually discard or donate their old VHS machines. Once the old machine is gone, there is no way to view the tapes.” she explained.

“There are some stores who offer a service of converting the VHS to DVD but the cost is usually quite prohibitive. $35.00 per hour is usually the going rate and locating and tracking down the right spots on the tape is time consuming. It makes converting a VHS tape to a DVD very expensive.” she continued.

With this project seniors are able to enjoy working with other seniors to create new memories and at the same time make some new friends. They can reminisce and share their knowledge as they gather to go over old photos and videos. The volunteers learn new technology in a friendly, sharing atmosphere.

Other community partners for this project were the City and township of Langley, the Fraser Valley Regional Library, Backstreet Studios at Brookswood Secondary, Simpson Manor, and St. Dunstan’s Anglican Church.

Making Old Memories New Again ensures that VHS tapes no longer need to gather dust and be unusable. Though the program wrapped up in April it is expected to return possibly during the summer or in the fall. Seniors and students are encouraged to contact the Langley Arts Council in June for an update on this exciting program. f you want to make your old memories new again free or at a fraction of the cost of having VHS tapes converted to DVDs at local photo stores, this is the program for you. Can help at home speed healing?

etter at Home is a new program designed to help seniors remain independent at home.

The United Way received 15 million dollars in provincial funding to institute programs for non medical home support for seniors in the province.

The program will eventually be available in 60 communities throughout B.C. and Langley is one of the first five to pilot the project.

There are many studies showing that, after hospitalization, seniors improve faster if they are at home with the proper supports. The risk of falls, infection, confusion and decreased mobility are all concerns associated with long hospital stays. The comfort and familiarity of home speeds healing and increases wellbeing.

Can help at home also prevent hospitalization?

The Government of BC and United Way of the Lower Mainland are partnering in support of this idea. They have launched Better at Home to help seniors with simple day-to day tasks, enabling them to maintain their independence at home and stay connected with their community. Each BC community will offer a range of non-medical home supports.

In Langley (including Aldergrove & Fort Langley), through the Langley Senior Resources Society, the supports include transportation, grocery shopping, light housekeeping and friendly visiting.

How can these supports prevent hospitalization?

Regular housecleaning can remove tripping hazards which prevents falls; provide a clean fridge which prevents food poisoning; reduce dust and vacuum regularly which offers cleaner air for those with sensitive lungs and can even help to keep bed bugs at bay. Changing a bed is a challenge for many seniors and having clean sheets and a good sleep promotes health. Having transportation available allows seniors to get groceries regularly, keep their medical

and dental appointments and get out to social activities. Good nutrition is vital for health, following up with your doctor, dentist or pharmacist keeps medications current and oral health optimal. Even a ride to the barber or hairdresser has implications for personal wellbeing. Getting out to socialize improves mood, appetite, prevents isolation and generally elevates wellness.

The local program will include residents of all of Langley, City and Township, over the age of 65. All are eligible and fees are based on the household income assessed on a sliding scale and are based on the ability to pay. Some services will be offered for free.

The light housekeeping service is the most popular, alongside transportation. The Langley Seniors Centre is partnering with Comfort Keepers, a bonded private home support agency, to provide 2 hours of subsidized housekeeping per month. This can include vacuuming, dusting, inside windows, laundry, kitchen and bathroom. Comfort Keepers tries to ensure that the same person comes each time. To register, one of the staff will make a home visit. Other services include a volunteer to visit weekly or someone to pick up groceries.

Any costs for housekeeping or transportation are billed to the client monthly from the Langley Seniors Centre.

Transportation is provided by volunteers driving their own vehicles to pick up a senior at home, take them to their appointment, wait for them and return them home. Clients can use the service as much as needed and the cost can be subsidized based on annual household income.

The money received from United Way will pay for administration staffing and co-ordination of the program. Local organizations have been very ac-

tive and vocal in trying to increase the services available to those seniors who have either chosen to live independently or those who have no choice financially.

It is so true that the little things make all the difference. With the help of volunteers and community partners and with the assurance of a trusted organization like Langley Seniors Centre, Langley seniors can stay in their own homes longer while still getting out into the community for their needs.

“For myself, I am new to Langley but I have always been involved in any community I have lived in and I was attracted to CARP out of frustration. I was looking for scooter information for my father and details on funding sources, availability was just not easy to come by. I could only imagine how difficult it would be if I were a senior looking for that information on my own. CARP gives them a voice.”

“There are now more people in Canada over the age of 60 than under 14,” Teri points out.”This is a first in Canadian history, as is the fact that, for the first time, there are now both parents and children receiving CPP benefits,” Advocacy is a main focus of the CARP Vision. By providing information on topics such as hospital ratings, adverse drug reactions, how the GST will affect OAP, or how to benefit from physiotherapy and exercise, members feel included and by providing an ear, the seniors are no longer isolated.

“We want to be a voice for seniors but first we need to listen,” explains Teri. “We have to know what our members need help with. Certainly in our community, affordable housing and transportation are always topics of discussion. If we can pass these concerns on to elected officials as a

group, we have a louder voice than the individual.”

In its first year the chapter has been involved in the creation of the Township Seniors Advisory Committee and advocated for new Township housing development rules better suited to aging residents.

Joe Zaccaria, past vice chair of Langley’s Canadian Association of Retired Persons (CARP) chapter, opposed simply cutting the restrictions.

He noted that the Lower Mainland’s population is aging, and pointed to estimates that there will be 38,143 seniors over 65 in Langley by 2027, a 136.7 per cent increase over the numbers in 2007.

Those over 80 will jump from 5,127 in 2007 to an estimated 9,454 in 2017.

“We attend local events like the Cruise-in or the Cranberry Festival and make our organization accessible to people,” Teri explains. “CARP also offers members benefits and discounts, as well as hosting many social and community events.”

The local Carp Chapter has addressed many topical issues such as mandatory retirement. Statistics point out that Canadians are living 25 years longer than they used to and are in much better health.

This allows them to be productive in the work place. When seniors become disengaged, they begin to decline and shut down. CARP has lobbied

very successfully against mandatory retirement.

The Goals set out at the inaugural meeting were to address: • Housing – Affordable & Safe Housing Options • Municipal Planning & Community Development • Healthy Aging – Affordable healthy foods and services for Seniors • Transportation – Improved accessibility & safety • Advocacy – Creating an “organization with clout” to effect positive change for Seniors at the Federal, Provincial, and Municipal levels of government • Involvement – Outreach to catchment communities • Research – Bring research available on Seniors’ issues and services together from across all the communities encompassed by the Chapter “We have been very successful in reaching many of our first year goals,” Teri reports. “I have been proud to take on the role of chair and I am prepared for another busy year ahead.”

h o m e cooked meals is a healthy option. However, you may find it hard to cook small meals to serve one person. This is especially true as people age, when their children have left home and sometimes their partner has passed away. Food preparation takes time, imagination and energy, it can be easy to skip meal planning, or preparing vegetables, and grab something ‘quick and easy’ like toast and tea, or cheese and crackers or canned and processed foods. Before long it become a habit, and you’ll notice your energy levels dropping as your nutritional status falls.

Here are some tips to inspire you to eat well as you age: -Meal ideas to help you get enough vegetables, fruit, protein and fibre What do I need to know before I start cooking?

• It helps to follow a recipe. Pick one that uses foods and ingredients you already enjoy.

• You can find healthy recipes in healthy eating magazines, cookbooks or websites.

hen I told my friend Don about my latest assignment he looked intrigued. After I explained that I was planning to try it out myself using a very popular local website, a strange look crossed his face. My topic was online dating and I needed to do some research. So you can imagine my dismay when my young friend said to me, “my buddies told me that the website you’re checking out is nothing more than a booty call, and I gotta admit that the idea of someone your age going on that site looking for action just kind of creeps me out!!” he said. Don is still upright but I think his ears are still ringing from the tongue lashing I gave him about seniors and their love lives. But I’m happily married so as soon as I got home I deleted my profile from that particular site.

Online dating has become quite popular and online dating for seniors is a lot more prevalent. It’s rapidly becoming a very popular way for seniors to meet and find companionship. The number and types of online dating sites indicate that today’s seniors are embracing this trend in a big way. But online dating is not without its pitfalls and three out of four people I interviewed told me that they had tried it in the past and yes, some were still using it. They told me that I could tell their stories just as long as I didn’t use their real names.

Local Stories Lonny, a local senior, told me that for him, three times was the charm.

The first lady didn’t work out because of religion, the second one didn’t

work out because they couldn’t agree about sex: She wanted sex right away but he wanted a relationship first. Just about ready to throw in the towel, Lonny’s third foray into the online dating scene turned out to be just right.

“Wanda and I had a great conversation on our first date. We’re almost the same age and we have had similar experiences so it was kind of like going down a shopping list of likes and dislikes and we really clicked,” he said with a smile.

It wasn’t such a great experience for Louise however. She said that she had had three experiences, none of which she would like to repeat. She told me that in her opinion “men seem to be a little less honest in their profiles”. The first man described himself as an avid hiker and outdoorsman. Their first date was a walk up Little Mountain in Queen Elizabeth Park and much to Louise’s chagrin, halfway up the hill the man had to pause for 20 minutes to catch his breath. As soon as they arrived at the top, he promptly lit up a cigarette and she promptly left.

Her second experience looked more promising until the nice Japanese gentleman started to question her about her finances. Instead of talking

about their interests and hobbies he was almost rude in his request for more financial information. The last straw came when he suggested that they move to Japan and live with his brother and his 17 cats. They could be together in his small condominium even if her finances weren’t that great. Louise took this as her cue to exit stage right.

Because Louise is a teacher, gentleman number three seemed almost perfect. He was fit, well spoken and treated her very well. He just had one little request: He didn’t want to have sex with her, at least not right away, but while they were alone could she talk dirty to him. Shocked and dismayed, she informed him that she was not that kind of a girl and he could take a hike.

Choosing the right site.

Don’t let the above stories discourage you because research has shown that today one in five relationships has begun as the result of online dating. In the past, online dating was considered risqué and a little bit naughty and sometimes that reputation is earned. When I was choosing a user name, I picked something as obscure as possible. I mean, how many Florabelles or Cindyloos could there be out there? Turns out quite a few and the website suggested I preface these names with something like, “wild Florabelle” or ‘hot’ Cindyloo, or perhaps even “wicked’ Florabelle. I’m not sure those nicknames were in keeping with the image I wanted to project so I chose Candy Cane Miss. I haven’t had a lot of hits with this handle but someone suggested that at Christmas time, things might pick up a bit.

I guess the moral of the story is that before you jump into the online dating tank, do some research. For example ‘Our time’ and ‘Senior Friend Finder’ is geared for seniors who are 50, 60 and 70 plus. The sites are proclaimed as easy to use, geared to seniors and for people looking for serious relationships. But if simply having a little fun is what you are seeking there are lots of sites to choose from. Consumer rankings is a great place to start your search. Go to www.consumer-rankings.com and choose the online dating tab. You will quickly find a site that meets your unique interests and compatibility.

Don’t be Afraid to Try it out but don’t throw caution to the wind.

George Greenwood, author, speaker and facilitator for the popular Keeping Identity Safe Seminars agrees, that online dating programs are now a safe and secure way to find companionship.

He offers some straightforward and timely advice: “Remember this is 2013, not 1975. The world of technology is different and with it comes different habits, motives and activities and these tips are not designed to discourage or frighten anyone.” he said 1. Only use dating programs that are appropriate to your age, lifestyle and interests.

2. Limit the amount of information I would reveal on a dating site.

3. Be real and don’t portray someone you are not. The truth will come out soon after you meet.

4. Be careful not to give the impression that you have wealth beyond your means.

5. Meet in public places until you are convinced it is okay not to.

6. Never provide your “date” with passwords and PINs for anything.

sick in a foreign country

t the beginning of our trip to a small village in Mexico, I woke up to see someone in the bed next to mine. No, this wasn’t the result of a margarita drenched evening, it was because my husband Topher would normally be out for his morning walk.

This is usually long before I open my eyes to greet the day but this morning his rapid trip to the washroom and the dreadful colour of his face indicated that he was not well.

Getting sick in a foreign country is a tourist’s worse nightmare but getting sick in Mexico usually draws laughs about having too much tequila or comments about Montezuma’s Revenge. We have been travelling to Mexico for the past eight years and we always have travel insurance and this year we were very glad that we did.

My husband is never sick and he seldom has any kind of stomach upset. His face was turning the colour of chalk and he was starting to become very lethargic.

Knowing that he would need medical attention, I messaged some friends who stay in La Peñita on a long term basis to ask if they knew of an English speaking doctor. Right away they recommended Dr. Martin Nuñez Arciniega, or simply Dr. Martin as he was known.

Our friend, Bazooka Bill, picked us up and before long we were sitting in the doctor’s office.

After a quick examination, Dr. Martin told us that Topher would need to stay in the clinic and begin IV fluids. At the time I didn’t even think about our travel insurance. I was far too worried.

With our insurance policy we were issued wallet cards with contact phone numbers to call in an emergency. My mistake was that I didn’t make that phone call. Until we returned …CONTINUED

have insurance will travel to Canada I had no idea how our insurance company would handle our claim. Luckily Doctor Martin was trained in the USA and had many North American patients.

He had a good understanding of how travel insurance worked so he was able to provide us with the appropriate documentation.

There are horror stories about how expensive medical treatment is in foreign countries, especially the United States so I was very surprised when our bill which included a stay in the clinic, prescription medicine and two follow-up visits was 2900. pesos or the equivalent of $275. Canadian. We were able to pay the doctor’s fee right away using only a portion of our holiday budget. We were lucky. Many aren’t.

You should always read the fine print. A friend of mine related the following story. A man was on a Panama cruise with his wife. He became ill and had to be taken by water taxi to the mainland and then taken by ambulance to the hospital in Panama City. A ruptured bowl was causing him terrible pain and he needed emergency surgery. He spent the next two weeks in hospital. The cost was approximately $40,000., and he had to pay it before he was allowed to leave the hospital. They had to contact their bank and luckily they had a line of credit to draw on. They were fully reimbursed but said that in future they would ask if the travel insurance will pay directly for these types of costs. Worrying about money should be the last thing on your mind in an already stressful situation.

Some travel insurance policies contain cancellation insurance. For example a friend and his wife were looking forward to a long awaited trip to San Diego. They had planned for this trip and were eagerly anticipating going on holiday. Six weeks before they were to leave, he suffered an accident that almost severed his right hand. He needed surgery and months of physiotherapy so they had to cancel their trip. They were disappointed but it was a bit of a relief to be able to get their money back.

The types of travel insurance policies vary, so ask questions and research the right policy before you buy. Some companies offer annual policies that cover you if you are away for a one day hop across the border or on an extended holiday or cruise of up to 80 days.

Be aware that some policies contain an alcohol-exclusion clause. Recently a case in the United States brought this to light. Many policies state that you will not be covered if you indulge in illicit drugs but did you know that your claim could be denied if you were under the influence of alcohol?

According to the British Insurance Brokers Association, more and more insurers are denying claims because alcohol was involved. An American lawyer, Ulf Ottho, was successful in making the insurance company pay his client’s estate despite the ruling that his client was impaired. He said that this is an important ruling for Canadian tourists. Many who buy

travel insurance policies don’t realize that insurance companies can escape liability by enforcing the alcohol-exclusion clause.

That particular clause may not pertain to you but there are other things to consider. Before you buy travel insurance ask these questions: • Are there exclusions that pertain to specific activities? If bungee jumping is on your bucket list make sure your insurance will cover you in the event you get hurt.

• Will your policy deny benefits based on a pre-existing condition?

Be truthful and upfront when applying for travel insurance, even if you are going to another province; the cost of health care won’t be covered if you were not truthful.

• Will the insurance cover the cost of an air ambulance to take you home? Some policies will only cover the cost of care; getting home is your liability.

• Does your policy provide for trip cancellation, baggage loss or other damages? Friends of ours had their luggage lost (never to be seen again) and their insurance company covered the cost of new clothes and new luggage as well.

• What documentation do you need to file a claim? As in the case with Doctor Martin, he not only signed the receipt, he put his medical number and seal on the document. Without that number, the insurance company may not process the claim.

Our insurance claim was amazingly inexpensive considering the excellent medical care my husband received. It was a mistake not to contact our insurance company prior to seeking medical treatment because they could have denied our claim. Perhaps it was because of the small dollar value the claim wasn’t denied but was turned over to a subsidiary that dealt specifically with this type of claim. There was a lot of paperwork involved and I was surprised when they told me that they would be pursuing reimbursement from BC Medical. British Columbia, Quebec and Nova Scotia have medical plans that allow for travel protection when you are out of the country or out of the province. If the claim is a small one insurance companies will seek reimbursement from provinces after paying the claimant first. This may not be the case in more expensive claims so check your policy carefully.

Topher was diagnosed with food poisoning that caused him to be seriously dehydrated. For a young person, dehydration is serious but in a senior it can be fatal. So I was very happy that after 10 days he was on the mend and able to walk along the beach. I was even happier that because we had travel insurance, his recovery was the only thing I had to worry about. ~ By Lilianne Fuller

mcgregor says Spring Cleaning Means Letting Go

caught the tail end of a talk show the other day, the guest was a ‘Clutter ExMcGregor pert’ with tips on how to free up space in your home. The Says next day at the doctor’s office, jim mcgregor the Reader’s Digest opened to an article titled ‘You Can Be a Clutter Cutter.’ I took this as a sign from the universe and began to contemplate the state of emergency existing in my house.

A couple of years ago on a hot August afternoon, I was cleaning off my dining room table because my insurance man was coming over. The table doubles as a horizontal filing cabinet so I sorted the paid bills from the unpaid, the file folders and flyers from the unfinished poetry and piled them neatly on the bed in the spare room. My son came in as I was applying a coat of Pledge to the table, and asked, “Is it Thanksgiving today?” Well that about says it all doesn’t it?

The article says that most of our real clutter is the result of emotional clutter, attachments we can’t break. This theory is put forth by a lady who is the President of the Professional Organizers of Canada! Can you imagine living with a lady with that title?

I can hear an interview with her husband, “Well when we met I knew she was Mrs. Right, I just didn’t know her first name was ‘Always!’ When I go to the bathroom in the middle of the night she gets up and makes my side of the bed.” I’m sure underwear left on the floor of that bedroom results in marriage counseling.

I had an organized neighbor; his garage was a shrine for all men.

Bright fluorescent lighting accented white peg board on every wall with outlines of each tool so he knew if one was missing. He borrowed my wheel barrow once and when he brought it back he pointed out the rust spots he had sprayed with primer and noted that the wheel hadn’t been greased in a long time! Now, guys, how many of you have ever chipped away the hardened concrete on your wheel barrow looking for the grease nipple?

The article says to start small, so I chose a cupboard in my kitchen. There was an electric wok, a regular wok, a crock pot, a waffle iron, a popcorn maker, a sandwich maker and a meat slicer I don’t think is mine. The President says if I haven’t used it in a year, get rid of it. I could take them to Penny Pincher, then, if I did need one of them I could go buy it, sort of like paying them

The alternative is to have a garage sale. In the months of April and May, daffodils and tulips signal the welcome return of spring. The first warm week-end of May, the garage sale signs push up through the boulevards and sprout from the telephone poles, a sure sign that summer is nigh.

Now my studies have shown me that we have three basic types of events, The Yard Sale, the Garage Sale/ Moving Sale, and the Estate Sale. There are some distinct differences between the three.

The yard sale’s purpose is to get rid of stuff they don’t want. The garage sale is being held for a reason. Maybe they are renovating or moving and they need the room and want to make some money for the new bathroom tile or help pay the movers. The estate sell is more sophisticated, children reluctantly offering mom or dad’s or Grandpa and Grandma’s belongings to the public.

At the yard sale, a set of golf clubs and a moldy bag will go for forty bucks. At the garage sale, clubs and bag with cart will be between $50.00 and $150.00 and at an estate sale Grandpa’s polished Wilson irons and woods will be $450.00.

A yard sale will have three dainty, flowered tea cups for 50 cents each.. At the garage sale there will be the same cups in a set of four with saucers for five dollars each and at the estate sale, there will be the full set with a matching tea pot that Grandma always served Sunday tea from and the entire set will go for $75.00-$100.00.

On Sunday afternoon, the yard sale is done around 2 PM, unsold items are marked FREE at the roadside and the proceeds have been converted to beer and pizza. The other sales hang on to the bitter end marking items down, hoping the early buyers will come back.

But, I am a Pisces, by nature a dreamer not a doer. I can write you a wonderful poem or story about clean up, but never get around to doing it, or if I start, I’m easily called away. But back to the clutter, all this stuff is now sitting on my kitchen floor, ready to be emotionally and physically discarded. But, I may use that sandwich maker now that I know where it is, so I’ll put it back and I should keep one of the woks and I know someone will come looking for their meat slicer.

I’ll just put them all back in, you shouldn’t try to do too much the first time, at least that’s what McGregor says.
