t Telegraph Cove on the edge of the Broughton Archipelago the Stubbs Island Whale Watching team delivers wildlife adventures that will live in your memory for years.The crew at Stubbs Island has set very high standards when it comes to delivering adventure on the water while observing the highest standards of ethical whale watching in British Columbia. These waters are acknowledged as the most accessible and predictable location to see Killer Whales as well as Humpbacks. Minke and

Award winning fruit winery ... from gourmet picnic to weddings Picture this – an award winning fruit winery on 600 sprawling acres with towering Mount Washington as a backdrop. Coastal Black Winery, a family-run estate on the northern edge of the Comox Valley, merits a big tick on the 2013 tourist bucket list.

Owner Abel O’Brennan says: “With three years of wine sales and several domestic and international awards under our belt we are constantly developing and improving our wine style with greater insight as time passes by.

Haig-Brown Heritage House celebrates history on the riverbank Haig-Brown Heritage House was built in 1923 and was the home of Roderick Haig-Brown, an avid fly-fisher, pioneering conservationist, acclaimed author and magistrate.

Today, on the banks of the Campbell River, it is a shrine for fly fishers and a tranquil trip down memory lane for the rest of us.

This historic family home was where HaigBrown put pen to paper and influenced fisheries biologists, ecologists and countless others interested in the evolving relationship between people and nature.

In winter, the House provides temporary accommodation for a Writer In Residence, through a program operated by the Campbell River Museum.

During the summer months, the Haig-Brown House offers unique bed and breakfast accommodation featuring three bedrooms for up to seven guests. The murmur of the river can be heard from the rooms overlooking the peaceful grounds. Inside the former family home, thousands of books line the walls of the study in which many of the writer’s famous works were penned.

Boatless? Head for Discovery Pier Don’t have a boat? There’s still a sure fire way to discover why Campbell River is Canada’s salmon fishing capital and that’s by packing up the family – and your rod and reel – and taking a stroll on Discovery Pier.

This award winning wheelchair accessible pier was built in 1987 and was Canada’s first salt water fishing pier. Located next to the Government Wharf downtown, it extends 150 feet from the shore, is 600 feet long and provides great access to high quality recreational fishing.

Saywards’ Rainbow’s End... golf with a slice of nature Rainbow’s End Golf Course in the scenic Sayward Valley is dubbed by locals as “the toughest little course on the Island.”

However, its owners John and Janet Rainbow say playing their executive nine-hole course is a snap ... if you can manage to miss the abundant firs, maple and cedar trees, the grazing elk and the picturesque Salmon River which borders two holes.

At the Rainbow’s End Clubhouse, John and Janet offer refreshments and the standard cart and club rentals. They are pleased to organize tournaments and special corporate events.

The course plays about 1,300 yards in total with seven par threes and two par fours ranging between 96 and 212 yards. Many visitors opt to double up and play 18.

Janet says visiting pros from larger Island courses have given the course high marks for design.

Join the GPS gold rush in Campbell River’s hills Geocaching enthusiasts from around the globe are fully charged about the treasure hunting potential of the mid-Island region.

Within a 10 km radius of Campbell River there are more than 300 caches. Wander outside the city limits and the cache count jumps quickly into the thousands.

More than four millon adventure loving social networkers worldwide – armed with a GPS or GPS-enabled mobile device – have joined the world’s fastest growing outdoor, recreational craze.

The word geocaching refers to “geo” for geography and to “caching” for the process of hiding a cache. The word cache also applies in hiking/camping circles as a hiding place for concealing and preserving provisions.

BC Hydro adjusts Hart Dam trails with you in mind Locals and visitors to Campbell River gravitate to the trails around the Hart Dam Generation Station. The refurbishing of the power house is a massive project stretching ahead five years. That means changes to the existing trails designed to keep hikers safe and still allow them to enjoy the picturesque canyon views.

The Station View Trail (an extension of the Canyon View Trail) will be in place this summer and then in the fall the section of the Canyon View Trail along the river by the generating station will be closed off for up to five years.

Once the project is complete the Station View Trail will be decommissioned and the Canyon View Trail will be re-established back along or near the river. River access from Hydro’s property will also then be re-established.  BC Hydro will allow trail access through the John Hart property during the construction period but the trail has been modified in order to maintain the broader Canyon View Trail loop. This plan has been well received by the community. There will be isolated closures to the trail during construction and those closures will be communicated proactively.

Local paddlers club promotes kayaking

Kayaking is the most popular marine activity in this region and the appeal of kayaking is obvious. It’s relatively easy to learn, it’s affordable and it’s a great family activity. It is also an environmentally friendly sport. Locally, a great resource for visitors is the Campbell River Paddlers Association. Visit www.crpaddlers.com and follow the link into their blog.

Campbell River Paddlers provide a club for recreational sea kayakers who love the adventure of paddling on the rivers, lakes, and oceans, and exploring the coastline. It offers regular scheduled paddles throughout the spring and summer, with the majority of paddles taking place on Wednesday evenings. Day trips, overnight trips, and skill sessions are also occasionally scheduled.

A day on the ocean offers so much – the serenity of inlets and fjords, the enchantment of seal pups and otters splashing at your side, the breathtaking sights and sounds of a passing pod of Killer Whales.

Tour options range from lessons and equipment rentals to multiday tours and wildlife viewing excursions. Ocean kayaking comes with a warning: Strong tides in Discovery Passage and Seymour Narrows can overwhelm even the most seasoned kayaker. Make sure you acquire the relevant local knowledge about tides and currents before venturing into these waters and carry all the necessary safety and survival gear. The options for fresh water kayaking are too numerous to list here. Lakes, small and large, abound in the immediate vicinity and many have great camp grounds and launch ramps. The local fishing and tackle shops have great back country logging road maps that make finding these jewels a snap.

Nuyumbalees people preserve their rich First Nations heritage Since its inception, the Nuyumbalees Society at the Cape Mudge Village on Quadra Island has been committed to the care and preservation of its potlatch treasures and to the revitalization of the Kwakwaka’wakw language.

No visit to this region is complete without an immersion in this rich First Nations heritage at the Nuyumbalees Cultural Centre where visitors gain insight into the beliefs and practices of the Kwakwaka’wakw people.

Nuyumbalees means, “the beginning.” The Nuyumbalees Society was founded in 1975 by hereditary and elected chiefs of the Kwa’ Kwa’ Ka’ Wa’Kw people to facilitate the return of their potlatch treasures and regalia (Kikasuw).

Since its inception, the Nuyumbalees Society has been committed to the care and preservation of the potlatch collection and to the revitalization of the Kwakwaka’wakw language. Today, visitors can enjoy the treasures of the sacred potlatch collection. Major renovations have been undertaken to maintain the standards for climate control and humidity control, proper lighting for the preservation and protection of the artifacts, purchase of new display cases, and other structural renovations.There are several petroglyphs outside the Cultural Centre and on the waterfront near the Ah-Wah-Qwa-Dzas (a place to relax and tell stories) across the street. The Kwik Kwik Gillas (House of Eagles) Cultural Education Centre located next to the Cultural Centre is being developed to include a library, a workspace for artists and dance performances.

Take it easy or push your limits on scores of local hiking trails The Campbell River region has more hiking trails than you can shake a walking stick at. Here’s a sample that runs the gamut from easy to extreme.

bridge, winds through the forest along sheltered Menzies Bay and up rock bluffs leading to some scenic view points of Seymour Narrows and Maud Island. The trail ends at the power lines that extend over Seymour Narrows, the site of the infamous Ripple Rock and the Ripple Rock explosion of 1958. This trail, 19 km north of Campbell River, is not recommended for small children.

Some easy hikes include: Lady Falls (1 km) – This easy 20 minute round trip walk to the falls is just past the Buttle Lake Campground on Highway 28.

At the end of the path is a viewing platform directly across from the falls that receives some mist from the falls.

Lower Myra Falls (1 km) – Beautiful cascading waterfalls are the reward at the end of this short hike. You can walk/ climb up and down the falls and swim in some of the calmer pools. Travel Highway 28 and take Westmin Road south to the Lower Myra Falls parking lot.

Elk River Trail (about 5 hours) – The trail is essentially an old elk path that has been cleared over the years to the gravel flats at Landslide Lake and upper river flats. A couple river crossings are on sturdy bridges. Beware there have been numerous bear sightings in the area. Take Highway 28 to Gold River. From the bridge at Buttle Narrows, drive about 23 km. You will find a sign to Elk River Trail just before Drum Lakes.

Bedwell Lake Trail (about 4 hours) – Located in Strathcona Provincial Park this day-use trail has an elevation gain of 600 metres. It ascends through a steep forested valley with some stairs and bridge crossings. At the top is a subalpine area with two lakes. Beware of the presence of black bears in this area. Access the trailhead from the south end of Buttle Lake.

King’s Peak (15 kms) – This is a daylong hike with an elevation gain of 1800 meters. It features some fantastic views from the top, steeps, stairs and switchbacks, waterfalls, stream crossing, rock cairns, some scrambles on some scree/rocks and up a gully. Take Highway 28 to Gold River. Just past Lady Falls Picnic site, you will notice a sign on the left a sign for King’s Peak.

Quinsam River Trail (2 kms) – The trail starts at the playground area in the Elk Falls campground and follows the Quinsam River upstream. The Quinsam Salmon Hatchery is approximately 2 km from the campground.

Crest Mountain Trail (10 kms) – This physically demanding and well marked trail is steep with an elevation change of 1300 metres, but the views of Kings Peak and Elkhorn Mountain make it well worth the effort. To get to the trailhead follow Highway 28 to Gold River. About 20 minutes past Buttle Lake campground you will see the signs for Crest Mountain.

Ripple Rock (8 kms) – The trail starts off in a field, crosses over a suspension

Finally, an extreme hike: Kusam Klimb Bills Trail (23 km, 8 hours) – This is a difficult trail with some rope assisted steeps, cliffs, old growth forest and possibility of year-round snow so be alert to hazards. Black bears have been sighted in the area. The trail starts and finishes at Heritage Hall, located on Sayward Road (75km north of Campbell River). The Maritime Heritage Centre, located adjacent to the fishing pier, showcases the restored seine boat BCP45, featured on the $5 bill from 1972–1986 and now a National Heritage Site of Canada. Practice the art of marketeering at our farmers’ market and fair That buzz you hear down on Pier Street every summer Sunday? It’s the hundreds of busy bees swarming over the Pier Street Farmers’ Market and Art Fair. Between May 5 and September 29 from 10 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. every Sunday the market and fair are the epicentre of community activity surrounded by Fisherman’s Wharf, Discovery Fishing Pier and the Maritime Heritage Centre.

The market, celebrating its 11th anniversary this summer, started as an initiative of the Pier Street Association and quickly became a popular community affair.

Special event weekends have even attracted as many as 4,000 visitors.

Market Manager Jim Creighton says: “Considered as having the most spectacular location of all of the BC’s farmers markets, ours provides a great variety of locally-grown produce, lots of locally-prepared food and pastries and the best choice of arts and crafts on Vancouver Island.”

“Many thanks to our great farmers who pack their trucks every week to serve their customers,” Jim says. “How about creating a vegetable garden in your yard or on your balcony? We’ll be offering lots of information and instruction. You’ll love it.”

After the initial launch the Pier Street Association received a grant from Community Futures that allowed the association to invest in a mobile music stage and sound system. Now live music adds to the ambience.

Local seniors create hive of activity To say Campbell River’s Seniors’ Centre is a hive of activity would not do it justice. On a quiet Monday there will be more than 50 folks chatting, reading, playing pool, bridge and cribbage. On a busy Friday that number climbs to more than 150.

The centre is open five days a week, Monday through Friday 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. except on Tuesdays when it stays open until 4 p.m.

Administrator Maureen Afonso says the welcome mat is always out for anyone who wants to enjoy the camaraderie, the nutritious lunches and non-stop activities. From yoga classes in the morning to professional dance instruction in the afternoon, the centre always hopping.

This wonderful community asset started in 2009 when a few forward-thinking seniors met at a local coffee shop and recognized the need for a seniors’ centre. They shared the vision of a gathering place in Campbell River that was specifically for seniors.

By 2010 with the help of then-mayor Charlie Cornfield and the benevolence of Allan Edie, owner of The Campbell River Common, the newly formed seniors’ society acquired a 6,000-square-foot store front home and membership rose dramatically to more than 700.

All roads lead to the fishing capital Campbell River, “the Salmon Capital of the World”, has earned its place at the top of the list of salmon fishing destinations.

All five species of Pacific Salmon pass through the waters between Campbell River and the Mainland as they return to spawn in their native rivers.

Campbell River is also the jumping off point for great West Coast open ocean fishing with Nootka Sound northwest of Gold River providing some of the best Chinook and Coho fishing on the entire coast of British Columbia.

Traditionalist will want to check out the Tyee Club of BC located on Spit Road. It began in 1924 with a group of anglers who returned to Campbell River each year in pursuit of the elusive Tyee, a coastal Indian word meaning “the chief ,” a Chinook salmon, 30 pounds or larger.

Tyee pool. The rower will slip the boat into the currents and eddies while keeping a basic plug or spoon beating in the current. If a fish is boated and weighs 30 pounds or more, the catch is recorded and the angler becomes a member of the Tyee Club.

Strathcona’s peaks beckon climbers The stairway to rock climbers’ paradise starts at Strathcona Park west of Campbell River. For beginners seeking that first toe hold to seasoned veterans pushing their limits, the park offers topography that ranges from inviting to downright scary.

The Crest Creek Crags, the Elkhorn, Colonel Foster and the Golden Hinde (the island’s highest peak at 2,200 metres) challenge those looking for new lines to the top. The main access to Strathcona Park is via Highway 28. The main access route to Forbidden Plateau from Courtenay and Campbell River is via the Paradise Meadows Trailhead at Mount Washington. Day users of Strathcona will be interested in two areas: Buttle Lake and the hiking opportunities afforded by Forbidden Plateau.

Crest Creek Cragg is a favourite destination. The local climbing community maintains the climbing routes on a regular basis.

Routes include some expert climbs for the daring and some easy routes for the beginner.

The Crest Creek climbing area is located near Crest Lake and Crest Creek on Hwy 28 (to Gold River).

There are19 crags with names like Black Crag, Pipeline Bluff, Narcissus Wall and Skid Row. Gravel roads and short hiking trails from the parking lot lead climbers to the crags. Combine the crags and there are over 100 different climbing routes. There are staging areas near the crags. Some of the trails are better maintained than others. Watch for exposed tree roots and loose rocks.

Pit toilets, picnic tables and benches are located on site. There is a trail and crag identification map also in the parking lot.

Our maritime and First Nations history alive and well at Campbell River museum The Museum at Campbell River, on the old Island Highway, is a living, breathing, hands-on journey back into the rich history of this region, a celebration of First Nations heritage and pioneer ingenuity. The museum collection comprises ethnographic, historic, archaeological and archival material of the northern Vancouver Island from Oyster River east to Desolation Sound

and north to Rivers Inlet, including offshore islands; west to Gold River and beyond to the outer coast at Estevan Point and north to the tip of Vancouver Island.

Leverton comes to the museum after an extensive career as a senior executive and consultant with a number of public facilities including First Nations cultural and heritage centres, a maritime museum and major science centres including the H.R. Gritty artists make the wood chips fly Chainsaws buzzing, wood chips flying – that sounds like work. Not at Willow Point this summer. This is the sound of gritty artists transforming logs into art works and it is an enormously popular event with locals and visitors.

From June 26 to June 30 the Campbell River Shoreline Arts Society presents the 17thth annual “Transformations On The Shore” Chainsaw Carving Competition. This

five-day event brings novice, amateur, semi-professional and professional carvers to the shoreline of Willow Point where they transform cedar and fir logs into works of art.

As many as 30 carvers will sculpt and shape their logs using chainsaws, mauls, knives, chisels and various custom tools until a new creation is released from the heart of the wood. The finished sculptures are displayed in various parks and sponsors’ premises for everyone to enjoy year round.

One of the favourite features of the event is the one hour “QuickCarve” on Saturday, June 29th at 1 p.m. These quickcarvings are placed in a silent auction for public bidding.

Oh Canada … July 1st is going to be fun On Canada Day Campbell River pulls out all the stops … particularly where the children are concerned.

It all starts with “The Nite B4”, a salmon barbeque and an evening of family entertainment at Spirit Square across from Shoppers Row. Bright and early July 1st Quality Foods and the city’s volunteer firefighters host a pancake breakfast at Frank James Park from 8 a.m. until 11.

At 9 a.m. at Discovery Pier youngsters 12 and under cast off in the Huck Finn Derby. This fun event is sponsored by the Elks Lodge #373 and the Salmon Festival Association. All contestants must be accompanied by an adult, have their own fishing gear and wear an approved life jacket while on the docks. Prizes are awarded to the youthful participants in each category for the biggest, smallest, prettiest, ugliest, fattest, skinniest and oddest catch.

A parallel Small Fry Derby is open to participants up to three years old and offers the challenge of snagging something in the fish pond to win cool prizes. Prizes are also awarded for the best costume if the participant wishes to dress up.

Other events include: The “Salmon City Jam” Skateboard Competition at Willow Point Park (11 a.m. to 3) with prizes in the Shredder, Novice and Pro classifications; the Quality Food’s KidsFest at the Campbell River Community Centre (11 to 3 p.m.); the Canada Day Birthday Cake at Frank James Park at noon and a Senior’s Honour Tea at the Museum at Campbell River (1 to 2:30 p.m.)

Of course the highlight of the day will be the Salmon Fest Parade sponsored by the Campbell River Rotary and Salmon Festival Association. The parade starts at 4 p.m. and winds its way around the city core. Trophies and prizes are awarded from Ostler Park stage at 6:30 p.m.

Get set to boogie at Spirit Square Spirit Square, Campbell River’s entertainment focal point, has some hot acts lined up this summer.

One of highlights will be the Tyee Plaza Charity Jazz and Blues event Saturday July 23rd at 7 p.m. featuring David Gogo and his fabulous blues band. This Nanaimo boy has taken his own brand of electric blues world-wide, sharing stages with B.B. King and Johnny Winter. He has been crowned Western Canada’s Entertainer of the Year three times and is also winner of Canada’s Maple Blues Award.

As well “The Sweet Lowdown” will be in concert on Thursday evening August 29th at 7 p.m. The Victoria-based acoustic roots trio is drawn together by mutual passion for old-time groove, hard driving bluegrass, sweet harmonies and wellwrought songs. The trio – Amanda Blied on guitar, Shanti Bremer on banjo and Miriam Sonstenes on fiddle – blends original song-writing with old time roots music to create a sound that is unique and timeless. By the early spring of 2011 the trio had garnered quite a local following and won the Monday Magazine M-Award for Favorite Roots/World Music Group. Their debut album was nominated for 2012 Album of the Year by the Vancouver Island Music Awards.

Besides its summer schedule of free live entertainment, it’s a place for community groups to present themselves, and sometimes just a place to relax.

46th Salmon Festival … where loggers rule Campbell River is synonymous with big salmon and bigger loggers and the Annual Salmon Festival, Aug. 9 through 11, will have both in abundance.

This year, as in years past, the centrepiece of the festival will be the Logger Sports featuring two World Championship events and seven Canadian Championships along with more than 30 Open, Intermediate, Novice, Ladies, Youth and Teen events.

International and local loggers will be competing for a $34,590 prize package at this World Class Loggers Sports Competition. Friday evening will feature a special competition “The Best In The Bush, a relay competition for local teams of four competing in four events – axe throwing, power saw bucking, choker racing and double hand saw bucking.

Pedal power prevails... mellow and mind blowing The Campbell River region with its superb terrain is blessed with numerous mountain biking trails that range from easy family tracks to difficult back country trails that will challenge the toughest rider.

Close to the city the Pump House Trail is located between Iron River Road and the Campbell River and features easily accessible, well-marked single-track trails. Get onto Highway 28 and turn onto the Duncan Bay Main and cross the Campbell River. You’ll find one trailhead just south of the intersection of Duncan Bay and Iron River Road and another located west of Duncan Bay Road on Iron Bay Road.

The Snowden Demonstration Forest west of Campbell River and north of Highway 28 near Loveland Bay Provincial Park offers more than 30kms of trails suited to all levels of expertise and includes the Frog Lake and Lost Lake trail systems. Trails are usually two to eight kms and frequently intertwine.

follow old rail beds that have been rehabilitated as recreational trails.

Beginners should check out the Beaver Lodge Lands near the North Island College campus.

Old rail grades, logging roads and hiking tracks make for an enjoyable tour through tall trees.

Mount Washington offers two high-speed lifts that are equipped to carry you and your bike safely to the top of the mountain and its 37 kms of trails that cater to all levels of expertise with dirt jumps, wooden stunts and old-school single tracks.

Drop into the Visitors’ Centre at the Tyee Plaza beside Spirit Square and pick up some trail maps.

The trout are jumpin’ in them thar hills Just outside the borders of the “Salmon Capital of the World” there are countless lakes and streams teaming with fish.

before they are large enough to be caught. It is not unusual to catch four to six pound trout in any number of lakes on a consistent basis.

The abundance of freshwater steelhead, salmon and trout in our rivers attracts increasing numbers of flyfishers annually. You only have to count the vehicles parked along Highway 28 bordering the Campbell River on the outskirts of the city to appreciate that the legacy of our very own world famous flyfisher Roderick Haig-Brown is alive and well.

If you don’t have a boat and want to try lake fishing from the shore then Echo Lake is a great destination. It is only 15 minutes from the city along Highway 28. The lake is stocked each spring with about 1,000 catchable rainbow making it a great fishing opportunity for beginners and kids.

Beginning in April, the lakes in the Campbell River area become active. The trout fishery in these readily accessible lakes continues to be healthy because no less than a dozen of them are stocked regularly with cutthroat and rainbow trout.

These fry are released into the various systems in the spring when they are five to 10 centimetres long and take about a year to grow

There is an abundance of local knowledge to be shared over the counter at Campbell River’s tackle shops. There is also a large supply of wet and dry flies and lures for the casting and trolling crowd. Don’t forget to pick up a fresh water licence and a detailed back country map to guide you to your new favourite fishing hole.

Discovery Passage Boat Rodeo This event started with very humble beginnings four years ago and has grown each year. This free event will take place in the waters adjacent to the Robert Ostler Foreshore Park in Downtown Campbell River. This year you will enjoy: A sanctioned bathtub race event, kayak demonstrations, blind dingy races, a Search & Rescue demonstration using a helicopter and rescue vessel, an onshore model boat exhibit and demonstration, a rope tying demonstration, the Build, Bail and Paddle Event in which participants have to build the vessel and then paddle it through a course, static displays at the government docks, the RCMP’s patrol vessel, two fish packers, the coastal passenger landing craft MV Aurora Explorer.

Pier Street “Historic Mile” is the city’s time machine Yes folks, time travel is possible in Campbell River. During the summer Pier Street, the birthplace of Campbell River, is alive with locals and visitors soaking up the historic ambience and enjoying activities along this “historic mile.”

For several years members of the Pier Street Association have been working to improve the appearance of Pier Street. It is lovely to wander along the street on a warm, breezy day, enjoying the charming ambiance of marine murals, chainsaw carvings, flower barrels, and carefully placed bundles of driftwood pilings.

Great, safe lake swimming is as close as McIver Lake just a few kilometres west of the city off Highway 28. McIvor’s wonderful setting and sandy beaches attract hundreds of locals and visitors throughout the summer.

We know there is nothing that makes a visiting pet happier than a chance to shed its leash and romp at will and in this region there are several options for travelling dogs to do just that.

One of the best is the Oyster River Park Trail, an easy hike for owners and a leash-free zone for dogs. The trail – locals call it the “pub-to-pub trail” – meanders along the oceanfront from Fishermen’s Pub to Salmon Point Pub. It is one of the best places in the area to bird watch or explore the rocky beach.

Closer to Campbell River there are a few leash-free options including a fenced park at College Drive which is accessible off Dogwood Street. There is also a fenced area at the Sportsplex off South Alder Street in Willow Point. Just be mindful of ball groups that use the same area.

There are many parks in the city, equipped with doggie-bag dispensers, where your mutt is most welcome as long as it remains leashed. One of the canine favourites is Dick Murphy Park on Spit Road where the Campbell River spills into Discovery Passage.
