Welcome to the summer of a Century in Sylvan Lake!

Our community has so many exciting activities, events and celebrations planned this summer that’s it’s hard to keep track of them all. While wishing the Town a very happy 100th birthday, I must also take a moment to congratulate the Discover Sylvan publication on its 30th annual edition!

I want to personally thank all involved in the Discover Sylvan publication for the work that they do in creating this annual celebration of all there is to enjoy and experience in our great community.

I hope to see you all out in Sylvan Lake this centennial summer.

Chamber of Commerce President’s Message Hello fellow residents of Sylvan Lakee and area, our business community and the many people who visit our wonderful town each year!

This is the year of Sylvan Lake’s Centennial Birthday and we foresee our town being an exciting and activity-filled place too be all year long.

As newly assigned President, I am very proud to say my family an aand nd I have been residents of Sylvan Lake for nearly 11 years now and nd we nd we have seen our community grow in so many ways.

Business is flourishing and continues to offer more and moree each eac ach and every year. Our seasonal and year-round services and activities ivvitie ies es are plentiful and continue to draw people from far and wide, either h as visitors or as new residents.

The soul of Sylvan Lake is in its people and their passion for our community and continuing support to contribute in making it a great place to live and visit.

Our Chamber of Commerce executive board consists of a plethora of individuals outstanding in their fields of expertise. From law to banking, from successful business owners to real estate and social activity, all are working together as volunteers to make our community great!

Local support in Sylvan Lake abounds and it’s the Chamber’s objective in strategizing new and innovative ways to support our community and its people in drawing more visitors here each end every year. Golf Leagues

Sylvan Lake Sailing Club races 30 keelboats that are moored in Marina Bay. Competitive races in three divisions are held on Wednesday nights at 7 p.m. between May 22 and September 4.

Weekend racing includes Pursuit races, club regattas and social events such as the Hors D’oeuvres race in which bribery of the race officials is encouraged.

Fireworks Sylvan Lake is renowned for its fireworks displays, produced four times a year. They are the 2013 evenings of July 1 (Canada Day) at 11 p.m. and November 29 (after the Santa Claus Parade). Dates in 2014 include New Year’s Day, January 1st (7 p.m.) and February 15th (7 p.m. - Saturday of Family Day weekend). The display over the lake is sponsored by the Town of Sylvan Lake. Best viewing areas are along the lakeshore.

Centennial Celebrations Underway, taking place throughout the year they came to be,” said Dale.

Sylvan Lake’s Centennial celebrations promise lots of chances for residents and visitors to enjoy the party throughout 2013. And lots of chances to dress in costumes of various periods in the town’s 100 year history.

Sylvan Lake Centennial Celebrations task force was formed in 2009 and members have since been busy ensuring plenty of options when it comes to celebrating.

A number of events commemorating the centennial have already taken place, and, according to task force chair Brenda Dale, they set the festive mood for the remainder of the year.

“The community is getting on board with the centennial,” she said. “People want to come to our community during our centennial year.”

The year kicked off with unveiling a new name for the town’s main street.

She said the collection of displays has steadily grown since the beginning of the year, as more and more groups have sought to promote their past and present.

The Centennial Street moniker now adorns signs along with the numeric 50th Street.

History board displays commemorating the centennial year have been rotated through town for several months providing an insight into the town’s illustrious history.

“The clubs and organizations have taken the chore of putting their history out on these display boards, describing who they are, what they do and how

“There’s over 40 of them now, and there’s more coming in as they find sites,” said Dale, adding that the displays fit the task force’s mandate.

“We’re getting lots of positive feedback on them. The first paragraph of our mission reads ‘to engage the community’, and those history boards have been a wonderful way of doing that.”

The summer months will offer many centennial-related activities and events.

Restaurants 21 The Centennial Jubilee Ceremony and barbecue, officially marking the centennial, will take place at the multiplex on June 8.

A musical theatre is being planned by the music department at École H. J. Cody School and community members with a different vignette for each decade.

Music and entertainment will take place throughout the afternoon, and will be followed by an outdoor barbecue featuring live music by Wooden Nickel.

A limited supply of tickets is available until May 31 - $5 for adults; $2 for children 3-12 or seniors 60 over; and free for toddlers under 3 or those 100 years and older. They’re available at the town office and aquatic centre.

Centennial Park will be officially rededicated on June 12.

Sylvan Lake Quilters will hold a Quilt Show which will include some old-time quilts, June 14 and 15.

The Centennial Meet and Greet, which will feature entertainment, children’s activities and a chili cook-off, is June 14 at the multiplex. The event promises to be a fun filled activity with former Miss Mermaids attending. A period fashion and variety show is part of this event. Bring your family down and see the antique vehicles. The Farmers’ Market takes place the same afternoon.

275 students, will eventually be mounted in the new town hall. The concept includes a large picture on a background of waves with a variety of smaller pictures and stories grouped by subject. Grade 7 students first learned about the project in December and have been researching the town’s history and using their imagination. Their results will have a chance to be included in the finished product, said Doug Driediger of Metro Design Group. Everyone’s work will be kept and permanently displayed in a binder. Some will be included on the mural.

“Drawing, painting, writing, photos, clippings, objects, collage, sculpture — we’re not just limited to people who like to paint,” he told the students.

Keepsakes produced for the Centennial include an 18-month calendar compiled by Sylvan Lake & District Archives Society which chronicles different facets of the town’s history.

A Centennial Cookbook was published by Sylvan Lake & Area Community Partners Association as a fundraiser. It includes 214 recipes submitted by local residents and those with connections to Sylvan Lake.

Sylvan Lake Chamber of Commerce is selling clothing and other items emblazoned with the Centennial logo at its office in the Tourist Information Centre.

The Parade of the Century is taking place June 15 beginning at 1 p.m. Interest is growing with unique plans by businesses and organizations to mark this milestone.

Holding these events over the course of the week in June is a way of responding to the public’s desire to see the town’s annual 1913 Days anniversary celebration held in extraordinary fashion, according to Dale.

“From the feedback, when we started getting information from the community about how best to celebrate our centennial, there was an expectation of a very much enhanced 1913 Days,” she said, adding that members of the community have been eager to volunteer for centennial-related events.

Volunteer positions have filled up fast, according to Dale, but more volunteers are being sought as events continue throughout the year. Those interested are asked to contact Dale at 403-887-3937.

22 Restaurants Tantalizing tastes of sugar loaves recreated for Sylvan’s centennial A walk through the streets to the tune of the dance halls or on a midnight stroll with just the moon to witness the crunching of his footsteps in the snow, gave John Bos time for reflection.

B By word of mouth local residents and touriists from far and wide raced to the bakery tto grab enough to fill their freezers for the w winter. Even if John and his staff had baked ffor 24 hours, they wouldn’t have been able tto keep up with the demand.

This new country had been good to him and his family. Soon the dough would be rising while the big rotating oven would be heating up to golden brown his bread and buns.

The delicious smells would capture the customers as they rushed in to get their orders before the shelves were empty.

John came from Friesland of northern Holland in 1927 at the age of 22 years. He sailed with a special friend, Jessie, whom he knew from his homeland, and then by train from Halifax to Lacombe, Alberta.

John and Jessie married and they started their family in Lacombe supported by various jobs as everyone did. John tried farming, but he decided he was a better baker than a farmer.

After all, he had apprenticed as a baker since he was 13 years old. He had come to Canada with a secret in his pocket and he was willing to use it.

The Bos family moved to Sylvan Lake in 1958 and opened the bakery on main street in 1959. Thus started the famous Sugar Loaf. It was made with original ingredients and had a melt-inyour-mouth flavour to satisfy any sweet tooth. It went nicely with cheese, you could toast it, cook as french toast — a wonderful treat for kids or adults alike.

O Over 150 loaves were made for Saturday m morning and they would always be short.

P People started phoning in their orders and w would take 40-50 loaves at a time to stock u up.

Fi Finally John had to put a limit on each orde der and customers had to spread their orders ov over two or three weekends, but usually by 2 p.m. on a Saturday afternoon, the bakery would close due to empty shelves. The unlucky ones would knock at John’s residence on Sunday hoping for any extra, but he always kept the Sunday aside for his family.

John had the bakery for twenty years and retired at the age of 68 years. He left behind a wonderful legacy which brings back the wonderful memorable senses of a smell on main street. In honor of John Bos and his Sugar bread, Sobey’s Sylvan Lake will be making the sugar loaves for our 2013 centennial. Get them while you can!

Restaurants 23 Recipe treasures now available in Centennial cookbook

Sylvan Lake’s Centennial Cookbook is available for sale, following the work of hundreds of people who submitted recipes, organized and proofed the publication.

Giselle Campbell, who coordinated the project, said there are 214 recipes gathered from residents and those who have ties to Sylvan Lake.

About 40 volunteers were involved in collecting recipes, proofreading them, selecting pictures, creating historic tidbits and then checking the final book before printing.

The books are on sale at the Sylvan Lake Community Partners’ Association office on 50th Avenue (beside the Telus building) and the chamber of commerce office. Cost is $12 each (GST included). Campbell said they will also be sold at Centennial events this spring and summer.

The initial order of 500 books was already 20 per cent sold in April. If demand is great enough a second printing will be done.

Orders have come in from such far flung places as Lloydminster, Edmonton and Airdrie, said Campbell, adding word is getting out to people with ties to Sylvan Lake, either historic or current.

One of the recipes Mayonnaise Chocolate Cake, was submitted by Sally Murdoch (nee Jensen) for Jean Jensen (nee Palmer, whose father operated the Creamery). “This recipe apparently won someone a $100 prize - shows you how old it is!” states the opening line.

Contributors ranged in age from kids three years old to grandmas 85 years old — it spans the generations.

Visitors to Sylvan Lake will be pleased to find a growing number of features along the lakefront, following completion of a fully redeveloped Centennial Park.

The park offers plenty of space and the changes already made have been well received, according to Ron Lebsack, director of leisure and protective services for the Town of Sylvan Lake.

“We’ve certainly heard a lot of good comments and positive feedback on the improvements we have made there so far,” said Lebsack. “Ever since we opened it up last year it’s been really busy. We see it as a real hub of family activity.”

The firepit and picnic shelters may be reserved for events and specia special occasions. Bookings often fill up quickly for weekends throughout the summer months, and Lebsack said interested parties should contact the town as soon as possible to confirm their availability.

The park will be officially rededicated during a ceremony beginning at 1 p.m. on June 12. Cake and juice will be offered for those in attendance, and dressing up in a style representing a specific decade is encouraged.

Lebsack said further work on the park will be carried out before summer.

Brenda Dale, chair of Sylvan Lake Centennial Celebrations task force, said that only 13 people attended the park’s first dedication in 1967.

Art collection continues to grow at local gallery

The building, transformed several years ago from a medical clinic, still has room for expansion of the gallery, said Ellerby.

With a growing collection of art, and plenty of artists expressing an interest in having their work displayed, the gallery may see that expansion sooner rather than later.

“We like to take in any art that is being done by local people, and they just like to have a place to hang it,” said Ellerby. “We try to take in everything that’s brought.”

Some of the work in the gallery is sold to buyers, earning artists 80 per cent of the price. The remaining 20 per cent is held by the gallery.

The gallery is a relatively new venture for the Sylvan Lake Community Partners’ Association, which, as a non-profit organization, offers a number of community services in a multi-program environment.

When the gallery opened nearly four years ago, it was, as Ellerby described, a way for the Community Partners’ Association to “try to do something for all areas of life in Sylvan Lake”.

The work of local artists is drawing visitors from all over the world to the art gallery in downtown Sylvan Lake.

So much so, in fact, that any remaining empty space in the building is continuously being filled by the work of artists eager to show their work.

“It’s quite a large room, and we’ve used all of the walls,” said Sylvan Lake Community Partners’ Association president Donna Ellerby. “Now we’ve started going through a door and down the hallway as well.”

“We do run a lot of social programs, and that is our main focus, for children, youth and families, but we wanted to do something for other segments of our society.

“It’s just something else for the community to offer, and the talent in Sylvan Lake is amazing.”

The gallery is located in Sylvan Lake Community Partners’ Association building at 4936 50 Avenue.

About 6,000 expected for Canadian Scout Jamboree in July For scouts, events don’t come much bigger than the Canadian Scout Jamboree, which, after a six year absence, is taking place at Camp Woods west of Sylvan Lake July 6 to 13.

The event is supposed to be held every four years, but was last held in 2007 to coincide with Scouts Canada’s centennial.

This year’s jamboree, referred to as CJ ’13, will mark the return to its original schedule, and organizers have been working hard to ensure that the more than 6,000 people who attend get the most out of their time in Central Alberta.

“I expect to have representation there from every province, and probably the territories as well,” said John Witham, site manager for CJ ’13 and deputy council commissioner of special projects for Northern Lights Council. He added that a number of scouts from overseas will attend the event.

Throughout the week, the thousands of scouts, leaders and volunteers will live on-site at Camp Woods, and take part in many activities in and around Sylvan Lake.

Activities will be carried out in the jamboree’s five program areas: West World, The Bone Yard, Sylvan Crusades, Future World and Atlantis.

Hiking, archery and canoeing are just some of the things included in the various programs. Scouts will also have the chance to visit the Calgary Stampede or West Edmonton Mall.

“We’ve divided the week up into 10 program periods,” said Witham. “Morning and afternoon is each a program period, so there will be two programs a day, and everybody gets at least one off-site program.”

As site manager for this year’s jamboree, it is Witham’s responsibility to ensure that the area is fully prepared for the onslaught of people who will arrive in early July.

“If you think about it, what we’re doing is creating a small town,” he said.

“All the infrastructure that you would need for a town will be there: we have running water, we have toilets and sewage, we have recycling programs, and we have tenting and camping areas.”

Witham said there will also be stores, security, a medical team, on-site banking and “just about any service that a community can provide”.

“We’re there to make sure it’s a safe environment for the kids,” he added.

Services 29 This year will mark the first time the Canadian jamboree has been held in Sylvan Lake, and Witham feels the area provides the ideal setting for such an event.

“The camp itself is an attraction,” he said. “There’s a lot of opportunities with the lake there for water activities and there’s also a lot of off-site programming opportunities.”

Having the jamboree at Camp Woods will benefit the camp in the long run. Upgrades and new facilities constructed for the camp will remain for future camps and jamborees.

“Scouts Canada has started to try to hold its events on its own properties where it possibly can, the reason being it’s very, very expensive to set the infrastructure up,” said Witham.

“A lot of the improvements will definitely be of long term benefit to the camp.”

Camp Woods was first used by Scouts in 1932, and in 1934, was leased to the provincial Scout organization for its permanent use.

This year’s jamboree, according to Witham, will be the largest event ever held at the site.

“It’s a gigantic year,” he said. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for us and it’s wonderful for Scouting and for Central Alberta as a whole.”

Watershed society working hard to protect Sylvan Lake

Maintaining a healthy Sylvan Lake is key for Sylvan Lake Watershed Stewardship Society, which is again this year pursuing several initiatives to ensure the continued well being of the lake.

The volunteer organization includes about 440 members, and consists of a solid “core of committed lake protectors,” according to society president Graeme Strathdee.

In a bid to protect the lake in the long term, the society is currently participating in Alberta Environment’s Cumulative Effects Management System project.

“What that’s trying to do is come to grips with the longer term consequences of land use changes within the watershed, and how that might have an

impact on the lake itself,” said Strathdee.

The society is also seeking to control a different type of pollution — that which comes from the excess noise created by unmuffled watercraft and loud sound systems on boats.

Strathdee said that the water quality of the lake has remained “amazingly constant” throughout recent decades. The lake’s natural protective mechanisms, he said, have played a major role in its defence against potentially-harmful elements that enter it.

“It seems to have the capability to protect itself from the inputs of nitrogen and phosphorous nutrients that might enter the lake off the land, and not just fertilizer, but other stuff that decays and other natural sources.

“That’s where the municipalities come into play, to make sure that they’ve got their bylaws and regulations in place to control that and to prevent it.”

Abuse of the watershed, according to Strathdee, could see nutrient concentration begin to increase, resulting in the

Eight million tons of rain - 1938 “Nearly eight million tons of water added to Sylvan Lake by heavy weekend rainfall,” proclaimed a front page story in the Aug. 11, 1938 issue of the Sylvan Lake News.

For the first time, the festival will be taking place in a new location in the heart of Sylvan Lake on 50 St. A stage will be set up in the road near the lake.

Having been created out of a desire to offer Sylvan Lake residents an entertainment-filled, family-friendly festival, Shake the Lake has grown exponentially since it was first held in 2008.

“We’re very excited to combine the attraction of the lake with the attraction of the festival,” said McIntyre, adding that the new location will allow for more involvement from local businesses.

The three-day festival’s crowd has grown to include more than 10,000 people in recent years, and is now regularly attended by music lovers, action sport fanatics and families from all over the country.

“Shake the Lake draws about 10,000 people a year, so it should be a really big bonus for those guys, as opposed to getting in their way.

Festival co-ordinator Sean McIntyre said each year has been bigger and better than the last.

“Our goal has always been to make Shake the Lake Sylvan Lake’s festival. The event is going to be right in the heart of town and I think that’s where it’s always meant to be.”

And this year will be no exception.

“Every year we’ve been attracting people from coast to coast, it’s really exciting,” he said. “I’m more excited about it than ever.”

The festival, which is free of charge, will take place Aug. 9 to 11.

As has been the case in previous years, it will feature BMX and skateboarding events and various musical performances. A family zone will also be set up.

33 to “keep everything tight and in one group,” according to McIntyre.

“That’s the way that we’ve found the festival runs the best.”

This year’s schedule has also been modified to allow attendees to take in as many of the weekend’s events as possible.

“In years past, we’ve had everything happening at once, where this year we’re kind of interlocking the schedule a little bit,” said McIntyre. “It will be a little bit easier on our volunteers to not be so rushed, but it will also mean that everyone can take in what’s happening.”

The festival’s musical lineup hadn’t been confirmed at press time, but McIntyre said it would include local musicians as well as musicians from around the country.

“We’re looking at some really fun bands that will be returning from prior years and some that will be playing for the first time,” he said.

Like the musicians, competitors in the BMX and skateboarding events will also come from across Canada.

The festival has come a long way since it was created in 2008 and was attended by 1,000 people.

McIntyre and a team of volunteers work year-round to organize the event, and meet regularly to discuss their progress.

“That’s what it takes now with a festival this size,” said McIntyre, adding that volunteers come from as far as Grande Prairie, Fort McMurray and Saskatchewan to help.

“There’s always changes in the team and changes in who’s contributing and who’s doing what, but our goal is that Shake the Lake will continue on forever in some way, shape or form.

“It’s going to naturally change and evolve throughout the years, but we want it to just keep being Sylvan Lake’s festival.”

Perry’s group will play Friday evening, Aug.16, at Sylvan Lake Alliance Church. This is one of four ticketed concerts during the festival.

Saturday evening the great vibraphone player, Peter Appleyard, of Toronto, will perform with his quartet at the Alliance Church.

In close to 70 years in music, he has impacted and influenced the jazz community in immeasurable ways, releasing over 20 albums and lending his talents to countless others.

Last year he came out of retirement releasing two albums “The Lost 1974 Sessions, recorded in Toronto in 1974 with the Jazz Giants — Hank Jones, Slam Stewart, Mel Lewis, Zoot Sims, Bobby Hackett and Urbie Green — and a new studio album of jazz standards called Sophisticated Ladies.

“In his 80s now he’s still playing up a storm,” said Allison.

The weekend kicks off with the perennial favourite, Johnny Summers Little Big Band Swing Dance, on the Thursday evening at the Royal Canadian Legion. This is the same location where some very talented swing dancers demonstrated their skills last year. This is at least the sixth year this very popular band has opened the festival.

The other ticketed event has the festival committee “very excited”, said Allison. Boogie Patrol will be performing at the Blues Bash at the Legion Saturday afternoon.

Allison said they’re getting great support from sponsors but there’s still time to get involved.

Volunteers are also sought for a variety of positions at either a single event or throughout the weekend. “We have a great core of people but we’re hoping to build on it,” he said.

One of the goals of the festival society is to get young people involved. They’ve added what they call “Project Discovery” to this year’s selection. They’re planning to have some of the winners at local music festivals perform on Saturday afternoon at the Gospel Chapel. “We’re both quite excited about having some of the winners in the jazz and popular categories perform,” said Allison of he and his wife, festival producer Cheryl Fisher.

“We’d like to have this become an annual event, give the kids and opportunity to play.” The performers will be encouraged with a free ticket to one of the headliner concerts, a nifty t-shirt and the opportunity to participate in a Master Class with a world famous jazz musician.

The H.O.T. Dixieland Band will be back for another year, performing at the Farmers’ Market and Sylvan Lake Lodge on Friday and Lions Park on Saturday.

Jazz Goes to College will feature students from Red Deer College Saturday afternoon. Then there’s the Community Jazz Bands concert on Sunday afternoon in Lions Park.

Of course, Sunday also features the ever popular pub crawl with performers staggering their performances throughout the afternoon at a number of locations. At press time the full list of locations and bands hadn’t been confirmed.

Several places to launch boats, access the water

Besides the boat launch in downtown Sylvan Lake, at the privately owned marina, there are other accesses of varying degrees of development located around Sylvan Lake.

The one launch which has seen considerable change over the past three years is in the Summer Village of Sunbreaker Cove.

Lacombe County has invested close to $1 million to improve the launch area and construct a parking lot.

To get there go north from Sylvan Lake on Highway 20 to Rainy Creek Road, then west to Sunbreaker Cove Road (Range Road 22) and follow the pavement right to the lake’s edge.

Lacombe County has also formed a committee, which includes representatives from the other municipalities around the

lake, to look at boat accesses.

Another launch is planned on the north side of the lake, in conjunction with Qualico’s Palm Cove Estates and Marina development which is in its infancy. It’s located off Rainy Creek Road just west of Range Road 22.

Another popular informal launch which gently slopes into the lake is on the south side. It’s located beside the Summer Village of Half Moon Bay on Range Road 21.

However, there’s been discussion by Red Deer County councillors of closing and barricading that launch.

At their meeting Mar. 5, councillors deferred a decision to restrict vehicular access to the lake at that point.

Lack of facilities, such as washrooms, and frequent reports of its misuse and abuse,

prompted Red Deer County councillors to begin the process of closing the road at the lake.

However this was met with opposition from other municipalities around the lake who feared closure of one access would push people to other sometimes crowded sites.

Also on the south side of the lake are informal launches at the ends of Range Road 20 and Range Road 23 (beside Kuusamo Krest). To get to these take Township Road 390 (formerly Highway 11A) west out of Sylvan Lake then go north on the range roads.

Pedestrian accesses to the lake are located at the end of road allowances around both the north and south side.

RCMP, peace officers aim to make Sylvan visit safe and enjoyable

Protecting the safety of residents, neighbours and visitors is a primary concern for Sylvan Lake’s community peace officers, especially since the community enjoys such a huge influx of visitors during the summer.

The town employs three full time officers, as well as one who works seasonally, during the summer. They are authorized to enforce provincial statutes (including liquor infractions in the provincial park) as well as town bylaws. They work closely with members of Sylvan Lake’s RCMP detachment. “Emphasis is placed on traffic and parking enforcement in the community, in particular the downtown and Lakeshore Drive areas,� said Nick Reijnen, manager of municipal enforcement. “This is necessary to maintain a safe traffic flow through the main corridor during the summer months.�

when additional officers are brought into the community, particularly on summer weekends to assist the locally based officers. This enhanced policing program has been used successfully for several years and is funded by the town which has budgeted $60,000 this year.

Operation Check-M.A.T.E. - This program provides residents with the opportunity to identify problem areas which are then targetted for specialized traffic enforcement at advertised times and dates.

Statistics from these actions are then reported to the public.

A new online complaint system was

launched last year. A link to the form is found on the town’s website at www.sylvanlake.ca Speed limit - Speed radar trailers are moved to different locations throughout the summer to remind motorists the speed limit in town is 40 km/hr unless otherwise posted.

Fireworks - Sale and discharge of fireworks in the community were banned by council a few years ago following a number of dangerous incidents. Surrounding municipalities, including Lacombe and Red Deer counties, Eckville and the City of Red Deer also have bans in place.

Fires - The town has a bylaw which prohibits open fires. Fires are still allowed in fire pits or other enclosures, however they must be supervised. A complete fire ban may be instituted when conditions are particularly dry.

Noise - A bylaw regulates loud noise throughout the day and night, to allow “peaceful enjoyment� of the community.

This includes yelling, screaming and swearing. Also included in the community standards bylaw are penalties for creating graffiti, littering, spitting or urinating, placing flyers on vehicles, fighting or loitering, bullying and panhandling. Passed in April 2012, this bylaw updated a 2009 version.

A new concern this year will be parking around the marina, indicated Reijnen.

Parking of vehicles with trailers attached is prohibited on Lakeshore Drive and signs will be posted by the time the summer season arrives. They’ll be monitoring the situation.

These officers provide coverage seven days a week during the summer. When they’re not working, complaints may be made to the RCMP detachment.

Municipal enforcement may be contacted from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday at 858-7280. Voice mail messages can be left outside of those hours. The RCMP may be contacted at 911 or 403-858-7200.

In addition, town peace officers and a bylaw officer deal with nuisance and unsightly properties, watering infractions and a host of other locally created bylaws.

Reijnen said they welcome inquiries from people about enforcement related matters or concerns. “We’re approachable and available to talk to anyone,� he said.

The protective services department also deals with health and safety, disaster services, fire and ambulance services.

Discover Sylvan Lake 2013

Education is an important part of protecting Sylvan Lake’s pristine quality. To that end, Sylvan Lake Watershed Stewardship Society has posted signs indicating environmentally sensitive areas of the lake, and encouraging boaters to steer clear.

The signs also call for boaters to observe the 10/30 rule (go no more than 10 km/hr within 30 metres of shore).

“Please do not: damage reed beds; disturb waterfowl; and pollute the water,” the signs encourage. The society erected 21 signs after the summer villages of Birchcliff, Jarvis Bay and Sunbreaker Cove were able to access provincial funding through an inter-municipal sponsorship program.

The maps used on the sign come from the Sylvan Lake Management Plan 2000 update. For more on the society’s activities check the website www.slwss.org.

Historic Paintings Two paintings of Lakeshore Drive in the early 1900s are hanging in the Sylvan Lake Community Partners’ Association gallery during the town’s Centennial year. The paintings were created by Ada (Faucher) Hagerman while she was a teenager when the street was just a trail.

One is at the curve looking west and the other is looking north around the Centennial Park area. Ada’s parents arrived with the Loiselles in 1889 and homesteaded across from where Lakewood Golf Course is today. She was born in Sylvan Lake and later married here in 1921.

She lived her life in Sylvan Lake apart from 10 years at Chaplin, Saskatchewan. The association is interested in hanging other artwork of Sylvan Lake’s past in its gallery. Contact the office at 403-887-9989 for more details.

Tugboat unique on Sylvan Lake

Amid the motorboats and sailboats commonly seen on Sylvan Lake, John Cameron’s small tugboat gets more than a few second glances.

“Some people just can’t believe there’s such a thing,” said Cameron. “People come up in big powerboats and want to take a picture.”

One person wanted to know if he would be building another, said Cameron, adding that all the comments have been positive.

“Oh that’s so awesome, I want to go on a boat like that,” remarked one passerby last summer.

Cameron began building the boat in December 2010, in his garage in Red Deer. He worked two to three hours per day most days, and took it on the lake for the first time July 13.

“When you’re retired you always think you’d like to do things,” said Cameron, who used to have a garden business in Sylvan Lake. He added that he already had the necessary tools and space for the project.

He chose to keep his tugboat small as practice, eventually hoping to build a larger boat. He liked the look and efficiency of the tugboat’s design, which he ordered from a website.

“I learned as I did it, the plans are very good,” said Cameron.

He said the boat’s construction style was forgiving of small errors he made.

“There were a lot of little challenges,” he said, adding that while it was easy enough for him to draw a straight line, it was another matter to cut it.

The boat is constructed from fibreglass, epoxy, and plywood.

“It’s kind of a messy job,” said Cameron of the work required to build it. “You get practised at it and then it’s not so bad.”

The boat is powered by an electric golf cart motor, which he charges every night in his garage. Fully charged, Cameron said the battery lasts about eight hours.

In addition to the battery, the boat is also equipped with a radio and a GPS, which help him monitor the weather, his speed, and his distance.

Cameron has only taken the boat on Sylvan Lake so far, usually twice a week, which he likes for its proximity to Red Deer.

He named the boat “Canduet” after seeing a boat called “Candu” in his building plans.

“I put it in Google and got no hits, so I figure it’s a safe name,” he said.

Cameron was familiar with boats, especially sailboats and canoes, before building the tugboat.

“But I’m not born on the water or anything like that.”

David Thompson The Greatest Land Geographer Of All Time The name of explorer David Thompson is linked to many facets of life in the Sylvan Lake area, across Canada and throughout North America.

David Thompson Highway (Highway 11) runs along the southern boundary of Sylvan Lake towards Rocky Mountain House.

But how much do we know about this man?

The North American David Thompson Bicentennials initiative increased our knowledge through a variety of projects. It was a three-year (2007-2009) continent-wide public and private sector heritage awareness partnership.

Plans involved celebrating the life and achievements of this remarkable figure in Canadian history whose works overlapped areas of what is now British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Nunavut and the states of Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon and North Dakota.

2007 marked the 150th anniversary of Thompson’s death in Montreal, the 200th anniversary of his first crossing of the Rocky Mountains in 1807 and his subsequent attempts to map the Columbia River system.

Though not the first or the only great trader-explorer on the continent, David Thompson explored and mapped more of this continent than any other trader and mapmaker. Arguably, the greatest land geographer of all time, David Thompson is truly a figure of continental significance. Between 1784 and 1850, he explored and

He was more than just a surveyor as he possessed the power of the astronomer to locate and fix a point on the earth by calculations based on the location of the sun and stars.

David Thompson is also important for his character. He was a truly multicultural North American. He lived among, was respected by, and was fluent in the languages of English, French and Native peoples. David Thompson is also a symbol of intercultural co-operation and close and enduring family ties with cultures close to the landscape that made trade the foundation of exploration and development of the North American

continent.

Thompson’s accomplishments helped define North America both geographically and imaginatively. His achievements include surveying many of the townships of Ontario and Quebec; determination of large sections of the boundary between Canada and the United States; establishment of the trans-mountain fur trade; exploration and mapping of a vast area of western North America and documentation of nature, history and culture of much of the continent.

As a writer, Thompson’s 77 field journals and his narrative, the memoirs of his western explorations, have provided detail for generations of historians.

He’s also remembered as a naturalist, fur trader, scientific explorer and cartographer.

Thompson used Rocky Mountain House as a base for some of his travelling.

A reading lounge, which has a coffee machine, is a cosy place to check the latest magazines or newspapers which arrive at the library regularly. And, said librarian Shannan Sword, the building is air conditioned, providing a great place to enjoy a hot summer afternoon.

There’s free wifi access as well as 13 computers for use by members of the public. Besides using the computers to search your favourite subjects or check your email, you can also print information (at a cost), scan things, make photocopies and send faxes. There’s a meeting room available for small groups.

For travellers who have The Alberta Library (TAL) card from their local library they can borrow books. If you don’t have a card, a guest borrower’s card may be purchased that allows you to take books out of the library for reading during leisure hours.

Underwater exploring provides unique perspective People who enjoy the waters of Sylvan Lake may be interested to know that its underwater activities can be just as fun as those that take place on its surface.

An underwater park is available for scuba divers to explore, and offers a unique look at the lake.

Dives to the underwater park, which includes a Cessna airplane, an old-fashioned telephone booth and various other items, may be undertaken either solo or as part of a group.

Denise Boniface, diving instructor and owner of Aqua-Nuts Diving, occasionally offers classes at the park, and, along with a group of divers, frequently clears the lake floor of garbage and debris.

“We usually have a pretty good time,” said Boniface. “It gives us something to look for.”

Some of the more interesting items discovered during garbage cleanups include a $100 bill, a full bottle of champagne and a bicycle.

Nonetheless, she feels it is the perfect activity for those who seek a way of having fun while challenging themselves at the same time.

Boniface said lawn chairs are commonly found underwater, as are other items likely blown into the lake by strong winds or off boats.

According to Alberta Underwater Council, a “combined estimate of over 17 tons of garbage has been removed by volunteers from all over the province just from the waters of the popular Sylvan Lake since 2002.”

Although that cumulative number is growing continuously, it is doing so at a much slower pace, according to Boniface.

“We’re finding less because we’ve already cleaned it up, but of course after the summer there’s always tons of beer cans and that sort of stuff in the water.”

Divers’ use of the lake is expected to be enhanced further as more and more boaters familiarize themselves with the meanings of dive flags.

Boaters unfamiliar with dive flags may fail to recognize a diver’s presence in the water, and can cause serious injury without knowing there is a diver nearby.

“We’ve tried to do some education by putting signs up in the marinas, and divers are encouraged to have an inflated marker tube so that when they start coming up, then they’ll shoot up a tube to mark where they are,” said Boniface. “We do try our best,” she added.

During the winter, Boniface holds classes at Sylvan Lake Aquatic Centre. For those interested in scuba diving, she also offers scuba diving-related items and equipment for sale.

The popularity of scuba diving among Albertans is “quite surprising for a land-locked area,” Boniface said.

Sylvan Lake’s centennial has increased the reputation of Sylvan Lake & District Archives as a resource for historic information about the past 100 years.

The latest addition was of the Bentley history books. “It’s a pretty comprehensive reference area,” said Thompson.

Sylvan among fastest growing areas of country

A burgeoning young population is evident in the schools, on the streets and in the parks of Sylvan Lake.

Because of the population increase, MoneySense magazine added Syl-

van Lake to its ranking of “Canada’s Best Places to Live” in 2012.

In it’s first year on the list, Sylvan Lake ranked 139th out of 190 communities, but it shone better in some of the additional lists. The community was ranked 36th on the list of Best Places For Fo JJobs and 81st on the list of Best Places to Raise Raa Kids.

We ranked third for percentage of population 14 and under, fourth for students as percentage of population and seventh for daycare per 1,000 residents, in 2012.

When Norglenwold and Jarvis Bay were added to create a census agglomeration, the total population was 12,762 for a 19.2 per cent growth rate.

According to Statistics Canada, Sylvan Lake was the sixth fastest growing census agglomeration in Canada during the period.

Walk on the Wild Side Trails of Jarvis Bay Provincial Park Using the trails in Jarvis Bay Provincial Park is a popular pastime, not just during the summer but all winter long as well.

the scenes continually change. As summer deepens, vegetation becomes more dense and spotting the wildlife more elusive.

Whether it’s walking along the lakeshore, admiring the views of the lake from the soaring cliffs, or walking through the forest, the sights and sounds are always different.

Then, following the camping season, the dying days of summer and the beginning of fall bring the colourful textures, as Mother Nature paints her creation the many hues of red and yellow and brown. Tinges of green remain against the blue of water and sky. Death mingles with life as plants wither and die while others provide their berries of nourishment.

In the spring, the 85 hectare park transforms itself after a winter’s hibernation, waking to the big sunny skies Alberta boasts. Birds fly about while animals skitter along the forest floors and through the trees. Take a minute to listen and you’re sure to hear the chattering of a squirrel. Or the rat-a-tat-tat of a woodpecker. If you’re really quiet you may spot a fox or rabbit. Perhaps deer or moose. Certainly you’ll see signs of their passing.

While there are signs along the lakeshore trail providing information about the garter snakes which live in the cliffs, they’re rarely seen while walking.

In the lake you may see a variety of waterfowl floating on the surface, depending, of course, on the time of year.

As winter’s cloak of snow shrouds the park, cross country skiers create their trails along the roads and trails of the park again enjoying the solitude while also basking in the bright sunny skies.

The occasional moose is spotted during the spring, fall and winter seasons, but don’t get too close. These unpredictable animals are not to be misjudged as some skiers can attest.

The trails are accessible all season through the gate at the end of Jarvis Bay Drive in the summer village or from a parking lot just off Jarvis Bay Access Road (Township Road 392) west of Highway 20.

Winter is just another season of activity in Sylvan Lake’s calendar year in late February.

Another highlight of the winter season is the pond hockey tournament which took place for the fifth year, Mar. 1-3.

That weekend Mother Nature should have been handed a misconduct for unsportsmanlike behaviour. Friday evening games were postponed due to warm weather, then Saturday the ice deteriorated to slush later in the day forcing some player out of skates and into boots. But by Sunday, conditions were perfect as temperatures dropped for the finale. The event featured 28 teams playing in three divisions depending on age and experience.

The town for all seasons certainly boasts an active winter scene with something for everyone from the individualist to team players.

Certainly the experience is significantly enhanced by Mother Nature’s bounty provided by our lakeside location.

Once the ice freezes, town staff are busy creating skating and hockey rinks just off shore on the east side of the pier. Complete with picnic tables and benches, the area also featured a brilliantly lit Christmas tree this season.

Besides skating, the lake is used for paraskiing, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, quadding and ice fishing to name just a few of the activities available. Looking for the perfect place to drop a line, just follow the trail to the village of ice fishing huts that mushroom every winter. But remember, they all have to be removed by the end of the winter fishing season on March 31st.

Municipalities around the lake have banded together with provincial officials to make sure this happens and that none are left to sink to the depths of the lake.

This year — Sylvan Lake’s Centennial — was kicked off with a magnificent fireworks display on January 1st which was viewed by hundreds in vehicles along the lakeshore and on foot around the skating rinks.

While January remains relatively quiet with few planned outdoor activities, February is loaded with events.

Winterfest is held on the Saturday of the Family Day weekend and the highlight is always the Polar Bear Dip. This year the event saw 41 participants jump, pirouette, cannon-ball and otherwise perform for a crowd of hundreds of cheering supporters, They raised over $24,000 for 12 non-profit organizations. Other events included a youth ice fishing derby, horse-drawn sleigh rides, a kids zone, and cardboard box races. There were a few indoor activities at locations throughout town. And, of course, fireworks ended the day.

Jersey Night, the Saturday evening gala event, provides a chance to visit with guest sports celebrities who share stories and laughs.

The date for the 2014 pond hockey tournament has already been set — Feb. 28-Mar. 2.

Away from the lake, there are rinks and toboggan hills maintained by the town in neighbourhoods around the community.

The recreation hub, in the vicinity of 48th Street and 48th Avenue, includes the arena, multiplex, curling rink and aquatic centre. All are filled with activity as temperatures plummet outside.

Sylvan Lake Admirals Senior AAA team plays from the multiplex and a variety of minor teams use both ice surfaces during the busy hockey season which features tournaments virtually every weekend. A team from Colorado annually travels to Alberta and plays one of its games against bantam players in Sylvan Lake.

The curling club hosted the Alberta provincial juvenile championships in March and are planning to host the Alberta Scotties women’s championship January 8-14, 2014 in the multiplex.

Curling leagues operate throughout the week, bonspieling is a frequent activity and members are very active in encouraging young people to adopt the sport. During the past season 654 students from elementary and secondary schools curled as part of their physical education classes.

The same weekend debuted speedskaters who demonstrated their endurance during a 24-hour marathon.

The following weekend Sylvan Lake Ice Marathon was hosted by Foothills Speed Skating Marathon Association. It included races and tours of 10, 25, 50 and 100 kilometres as well as a 160 metre sprint race. Over 100 competitors took part, some skating in more than one event on a specially prepared loop track of 5 km.

Imaginations take over as children explore a very unique community park in Sylvan Lake. There are plenty of opportunities for them to let their minds wander in the fully accessible park where children of all abilities can play together.

Another interesting attraction is custom made outdoor musical instruments called Freenotes percussion instruments (www. freenotes.net) that were made in Colorado. They include the Outdoor Pegasus, Saturn’s Chimes, The Amadinda and The Swirl.

The most recent addition to the inclusive park is an Activo Listo, a network of interconnecting cables sitting just off the ground for children to climb and develop balance.

Other items in the park are playground climbing equipment, regular and accessible swings, a rideon bus and motorcycle and asphalt and rubber tiles to provide endless accessible surfacing.

Last year an AeroGlider suitable for groups of people, including those in wheelchairs was added as were picnic tables.

Budding archeologists may find dinosaur relics hiding beneath the sand in one area.

The park is fully fenced so families may rest assured their children are safe while having fun. A large gazebo is suitable for picnics.

A pirate ship was installed in the fall of 2010 in Our Backyard at Four Seasons Park which is located behind Sylvan Lake’s Family & Community Centre at 4725 43rd Street. For children of all ages the ship is next to the real thing.

A variety of resources from across North America and parts of Europe, including the book ‘A Child’s Garden: Enchanting Outdoor Spaces for Children & Parents’ (M. Dannenmaier), have been used as references for the park’s unique design.

The Story of a One-Eyed Pike

Explaining the disappearance of fish from the lake

There have been many reasons given for the poor fishing the last few years in Sylvan Lake and after many talks with old timers and much investigation, here is what I found.

This, of course, applies to the north end of the lake.

It seems that quite a few years ago an old guy lived on a small holding there and used to put up fire wood and fish for a living. He used to sell the fish to the hotel at Eckville and district.

One day while fishing at his favourite spot, which was on a point with a small bay nearby, and not having much luck he decided to try another place and as he walked around the little bay he noticed a movement in the mud and on investigation noticed a small pike with only one eye struggling in the mud and looking wistfully at him. It seems the water had gone down and left it stranded.

Well the old guy had a warm heart so he rescued the oneeyed pike and carried it home and put it in his water trough where he fed it regularly and so the fish grew up and liked the old man.

The following summer a torrential rain overflowed the water trough and the one-eyed pike was washed out and the rushing water carried it back to the lake; but that wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t the end.

Later on that summer the old man was running out of grub and the fishing wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t so good and he was pretty downhearted.

However he thought he had better try again, so down he went to his favourite spot and after fishing for a considerable time

with no luck, was about to give up. It was then that he noticed quite a riffle in water some distance out in the lake and as he watched, it kept getting closer to him and he could see that it was a school of fish, and behind them was his one eyed pike smiling and winking at him. Into the little bay the one eyed pike herded them and the old man jumped in behind and dammed it, and there in the little bay was his grubstake.

He gathered up the fish and took his one eyed pike back to the water trough and I might say here that they lived happy forever after, but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not through yet.

When the old guy needed more grub he had a bright idea, he took his one eyed pike down to the lake and turned it loose and after quite a long wait, the riffle he expected to see appeared and behind it was his one eyed pike. As before he dammed up the bay and took the fish and his one eyed pike home.

He kept this up until one day his one eyed pike came back to him with no more fish. He had fished out the north end of the lake and that is the reason fishing is poor there now.

I have since heard that the old guy moved away and took his one eyed pike with him. They say that he turned up at Buck Lake but the fish there had heard about him and his one eyed pike and ganged up on the traitor and killed it.

Angling at Sylvan has doubled since ’97 The popularity of fishing continues to grow across the province, with Sylvan Lake attracting a steady stream of local anglers and many who are new to the region.

During the summer it’s common to see the end of the pier busy with folks casting their lines and catching walleye and whitefish. Walleye remain protected and must be thrown back into the lake.

While the walleye limit is zero, the pike limit is three over 63 cm and the perch limit is five. The whitefish limit stands at five as well with the burbot limit at two.

A key spawning area of the lake (the portion of the lake southwest of a line drawn from the northwestern most tip of the landfill pier due northwest to the point on the shoreline where the boundary between the Town of Sylvan Lake and the Summer Village of Norglenwold meet the lake) is closed from April 1 to June 30 and November 1 to December 10. This includes Marina Bay subdivision.

The remainder of the lake is open from May 15 to October 31 and December 11 to March 31.

The province has a long history of stocking Sylvan Lake, explained Jason Cooper, a fisheries biologist with Sustainable Resource Development, last year.

“Our stocking records go back to 1926 — that’s the first year walleye were introduced into Sylvan Lake,” he said, adding that historically, the lake was a pike fishery with burbot and white suckers. Yellow perch were introduced in 1940 and Spottail shiners were introduced in 1942 and 1943.

Brown trout and lake trout were introduced in 1943.

“Sometimes they’re successful, sometimes they are not. A lot of factors go into that — there are environmental conditions that have to be ideal.”

Restocking has continued with frequent additions of walleye over the years, the last being in 2006, 2007 and 2008.

Cooper said Sylvan Lake remains a popular fishery, with the bulk of anglers opting for the northwest corner of the lake while recreational users mainly stick to the shores adjacent to the

town.

“We did a Creel survey in 2010, where we go out and interview the anglers, asking them questions including how long they’ve been fishing, where they fish on the lake, how many fish they had caught and released, how many were kept.

“We’re able to get an idea how many anglers are out during the summer months and how busy the lake is in terms of the number of angler hours per hectare. We can then compare those numbers with other lakes across the province.”

Cooper said the survey showed that 75 per cent of the anglers lived within a 50 km radius of the lake. Interestingly, results indicated that compared to a similar survey done in 1997 there had been a doubling of ‘angling effort’.

“The overall usage had doubled. And I think it’s a direct result of the walleye introductions.”

There will be further work to learn if the stocked walleye are reproducing. If much evidence of reproduction is found, Cooper said there may be some discussion around allowing some harvesting of walleye in the coming years.

Others are perfectly happy with the catch and release routine.

“They enjoy going out and realizing that if they take those fish there’s a loss to the resource. If there are too many people doing that, pretty soon we have an over-harvest and the fishing deteriorates.”

Along that topic of keeping Sylvan Lake a healthy fishing source, Cooper said extensive development around the water can take its toll.

“People don’t like weeds in front of their cabins; they like to remove them. But that’s where fish like to live,” he said. “The aquatic vegetations in the lakes are really key in terms of different life stages — in terms of spawning and feeding locations and avoiding predators. Once you start removing that, you remove the lake’s potential to produce those fish populations like they were in the past.”

Another busy year expected for Sylvan Lake Sailing Club

Members of Sylvan Lake Sailing Club are anticipating another busy year, and hope this year to extend its reach farther into the community.

Last year, the club hosted the Canadian Yachting Association Women’s National Keelboat Championships which brought sailors from all across Canada to Sylvan Lake to compete against one another.

This year, club members are aiming to build the club up even further and increase awareness of Sylvan Lake’s exceptional sailing environment.

“The goal for this year (is to) create a sailing community and interest in sailing in Sylvan Lake,” said club commodore Chris Stanley.

“Some of the conversations we’re having is, how do we communicate with the Town of Sylvan Lake and how do we set up

relations with people so we can help each other.”

Stanley said the club is still discussing ways in which it can increase its presence in Sylvan Lake. Many people who visit the lake are unaware of its existence, and he hopes that increased awareness will help raise the club’s profile.

Currently, the club has about 110 members with 30 boats. To join the club, potential members must approach a boat owner in need of crew, and have an interest in sailing, according to Stanley.

Members occasionally travel to other sailing spots in Alberta and Montana, but Stanley feels Sylvan Lake provides the ideal location for sailing.

“It’s just a beautiful spot to come to,” he said. “It’s a contrast: we can race at 20 or 25 knots of wind and get into crazy, scary situations and compete, on one hand.

“On the other hand, there could be zero to two knots of wind, and we can just let the sails flap and go for a swim.

“What more could you want in the world?”

The club was formed in 1985, by a “group of people who wanted to bring all sailors on Sylvan Lake to the common purpose of enjoying our lake to the fullest,” according to its statement of purpose.

Club lessons for youth have been put on hold for the time being, as boats different than those owned by the club are required for training purposes.

Sylvan Lake geocaching opportunities on the rise A new activity is taking the world by storm, and has a steadilygrowing presence in Central Alberta.

Caches may be hidden in a variety of different terrains, but are always above ground, according to Saby.

Geocaching is the activity of using a GPS unit to search for items carefully placed in strategic locations by its participants around the world.

Certain caches, she said, require considerably more effort to find than others.

Hidden caches, which contain a variety of items usually placed inside a small container, are now in excess of 2 million globally. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s like a scavenger hunt, and it just kind of gives you a little goal to go after,â&#x20AC;? said Linda Saby, a Sylvan Lake geocacher.

According to Saby, there are as many as 50 hidden caches in the Sylvan Lake area alone.

Prior to embarking on a hunt, geocachers log onto www.geocaching.com, to obtain information about and coordinates for hidden caches.

Inside each cache is a logbook that tracks its finders, who, upon finding the cache, must leave something for the next person who comes across it. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You get the coordinates, and you plug them into your GPS,â&#x20AC;? said Saby. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Then from there, you go out and search with your GPS until you find the little box or something that youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re looking for.â&#x20AC;?

Agritourism an exciting alternative to in-town activities

Visitors to Sylvan Lake looking for things to do away from the beach may be interested to learn of the area’s plentiful agritourism opportunities.

Although the concept of agritourism may be native to some, Jim Hill, who, along with his wife Lesley, owns and operates Hidden Valley Garden, feels it offers something for everyone.

“It’s to get out of the hustle and bustle of the city and get out into more rural environments.

“I think the term agritourism started to show up maybe five or six years ago, kind of as a catchall term to encompass a lot of different kinds of operation,” he said.

“It’s not a well-defined term. It can take any number of forms.”

U-pick operations, corn mazes and farmstays are just some of the things that now tend to be included under the agritourism banner.

“There’s also the issue as it specifically re-

lates to food, of course, and showing the kids how to grow food.”

At Hill’s Hidden Valley Garden operation, visitors are given the chance to pick their own fruits and vegetables, including raspberries, carrots, lettuce and peas.

“We’ve been doing it for quite a few years, and it’s getting busier all the time,” said Hill, adding that many who visit Hidden Valley Garden are vavisi cationers and campers from nearby cat areas. are “In the summertime, you can’t stay at the beach all the time. Diversity of experiences offered for triathletes The Half Ironman features a two kilometre swim, 90 kilometre bike ride and 21 kilometre run. A new race started last year was the 1-60-10 triathlon which is a one kilometre swim, 60 kilometre ride and 10 kilometre run.

Triathletes and duathletes will converge on Sylvan Lake to test their abilities in several events this summer.

The Best Body Fitness Sprint Triathlon and Duathlon May 26 is a fundraiser for Sylvan Lake Triathlon Club, as has been the case in previous years.

“This is one of the first sprints of the year, and it’s a great kick-off for somebody wanting to start a triathlon season,” said race director Cathy Forner. She added that the triathlon is one of the only ones in the province actually run by a triathlon club.

“It’s run by triathletes, for triathletes,” she said.

“We all race, so we know what athletes are looking for.”

Participating athletes will swim, bike

and run, or run, bike and run, depending on which of the two events they enter.

Triathletes will swim for 750 metres, bike for about 26 kilometres and run for just over five kilometres. Duathletes will replace swimming with a second run.

“We actually see a lot of registrants from Calgary and Edmonton areas, and I would say that 50 per cent of our attendees come from either Calgary or Edmonton,” said Forner.

“It’s always been the trend,” she said, adding that registrations had also been received from as far away as Fort McMurray.

Each year, the triathlon takes on a theme. To commemorate Sylvan Lake’s centennial, this year’s theme is that of a birthday party.

Splash ’n’ Dash, a scaled-down triathlon for kids between the ages of four and 12, will also take place.

“It’s really just a chance for them to go and try triathlon,” said Forner. “It’s just a fun thing for them to do.”

Forner said that some who register for the triathlon mistakenly believe the swimming portion takes place in the lake. To avoid confusion this year, all marketing and promotional material has been modified to make clear that the swimming will take place in a pool.

“It’s way too early in the season to be getting into the lake. We’d have a lot of trouble,” said Forner.

Those eager to take part in a lake triathlon may be interested in participating in another of the events in town this summer.

The ninth annual Runner’s Den Sylvan Lake Half Ironman takes place July 21, and offers participants the chance to compete over a longer distance.

Race director Joe Dixon said after the event he received positive feedback from the athletes both on the new distance and on the recently completed Centennial Park. Registration was the best it had been for the past five or six years as the premier event attracted 236 individual athletes and 16 relay teams from Western Canada.

Dixon said the new distance was easier to train for, in addition to being better suited to the local landscape. He thinks Sylvan Lake is one of the best venues in Alberta for a triathlon, because it has “one of the best lakes in the province, a beautiful bike ride, and a nice run”.

Forner will be involved as a swim captain, helping with the organization of the swim course, and ensuring the safety of swimmers.

It is another event well suited to the Sylvan Area, she said.

“Our lake is an awesome draw for this kind of event, and we’ve got some great connecting highways that make it nice.”

Sylvan Lake Triathlon Club formed in 2009, and offers a number of training opportunities in addition to the events it hosts every year.

Through the club, members are entitled to discounts at a number of retailers around town, including Best Body Fitness, Cast Away Source for Sports and The Runner’s Den. They also have access to the club’s training clinics, which include cycling time trials, nutrition, transition training, bike maintenance and an open water swim clinic.

Less than an hour’s drive from Sylvan Lake lies the famed Scandinavian Trail, where visitors are able to experience life as it was lived decades ago.

“It’s all set up to the way they would have lived when they first came to Dickson.” said Lightbown. “It was definitely more than just a store in those days.”

“We have people that come from Denmark every year, and we’ve had people from all around the world,” said Lightbown. “We get visitors from the United States, too.”

Lightbown said many visitors hear about the area through word-of-mouth referrals, as well as through the Internet.

Other amenities in the area include restaurants and coffee shops, where visitors may sample Scandinavian cuisine.

Events take place at the historic sites throughout the year, and visitors may explore the area at their own pace, according to Lightbown.

“If you just like to wander around and look yourself, you’re welcome to do that,” she said. “I think that people enjoy the smaller setting and it’s just a real welcoming atmosphere that you don’t get in bigger centres.”

Just 20 minutes south of Sylvan Lake, visit the historic Icelandic settlement area of Markerville.

Travel back in time to the late 1920s! Costumed interpreters offer tours during the spring and summer. Enjoy lunch or ice-cream at the Historic Markerville Creamery Museum and participate in historic activities like spinning wool, games and poetry at Stephansson House Provincial Historic Site.

Both sites are open daily from May 15 to September 2, 2013, from 10 am to 5 pm. The Creamery opens at noon on Sundays.

Plenty of recreation opportunities away from waterfront

Whether bad weather hits the lake, or beachgoers simply want something to do away from the water, there are plenty of recreational opportunities to keep people busy for hours on end.

Nearby, Sylvan Lake Multiplex and Sylvan Lake Arena also offer space for activities. A number of sports, including roller derby and lacrosse, are played in the off season after the ice surface has been removed from the multiplex.

“We’ve got it spread out well throughout the community, so there’s something to do in every spot in town,” said Ron Lebsack, director of leisure and protective services for the Town of Sylvan Lake.

Some of the town’s most exciting new recreational amenities and facilities lie away from the waterfront.

One such place is the new Sylvan Lake Optimist Club Action Sport Zone.

“It’s been great for the locals, but it’s also brought in outside users. It has been a bit of a draw.”

Improvements to the town’s trail system are also expected to continue this year.

“For the most part, all the major trails have been developed. We’re continuing to work on trail connections and making sure everything is hooked up to each other,” said Lebsack. “As well, we’ll be looking at creating some of those connections down to the lakefront itself.”

Soccer and football fields, baseball diamonds and parks for children are numerous.

Some of these sports areas lie in or near school grounds, and Four Seasons Park on 43 St. frequently hosts tournaments and outdoor functions. The park is also home to minor soccer and baseball leagues in Sylvan Lake.

For those looking for indoor recreation, Sylvan Lake Aquatic Centre presents a convenient escape from adverse outdoor weather conditions, and offers swimming lessons for children.

SSylvan Lake Summer Hockey C Camp, now in its 39th year, operaates at the arena with week-long courses in July and August. (www. sylvanlakehockey.com/) Floor space may be rented in each of the facilities, and there is room in the multiplex for meetings, birthday parties and studio fitness classes.

A number of sports and recreation clubs and organizations also enhance the town’s reputation as a hub for both indoor and outdoor recreation.

For dog owners, a new off-leash dog park will soon be available in the southwest area of town. The park, located next to Leader Field and West Meadows Cemetery, was still under construction at press time, but was expected to be completed this year.

Rotarians leading committee to rebuild Sylvan’s lighthouse Sylvan Lake’s iconic lighthouse was demolished on Oct. 18, 2012, to make way for redevelopment of the marina site on Lakeshore Drive.

It took just minutes to fall crashing to the ground after being nudged by a track hoe.

Ideas of preserving the structure were dashed when the town had it assessed by safety codes officers who found it to be unsafe and below public safety standards.

Since that time a committee led by the Rotary Club of Sylvan Lake has been meeting to look at how to build a new lighthouse and where to built it.

After considering several sites, including the pier (landfill), it appears the previous site, which is being turned over to the town as a park area, is the most logical location.

The lighthouse was built in 1988 to mark the town’s 75th anniversary. It was a joint project of the Town of Sylvan Lake, Sylvan Lake Marina and Sylvan Lake Regional Sailing Club. The lighthouse at Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia was used as a model.

Since then it’s become a symbol of Sylvan Lake. It’s been photographed, painted and incorporated in logos.

“When the opportunity arose for Sylvan Lake Rotary to get involved, the membership was very excited to pitch in to recreate a structure that will hopefully pay tribute to the original lighthouse and recreate the symbol that has become synonymous with Sylvan Lake,” said Trevor Sigfusson, chair of the committee, when he called the first meeting.

“We hope to have service groups and citizens of Sylvan Lake get behind this project. We want Sylvan Lake people to see this project as something they created and that they can be very proud of for many years to come,” he added.

“I think this lighthouse could be a structure that we can still be proud of when we celebrate our next centennial.”

The committee hopes to have a selection of concepts ready to present to the public by the Centennial festivities in June.

– Community Church Directory – ALLIANCE COMMUNITY CHURCH 4404 - 47 Avenue Work began on planting a church in Sylvan Lake in 1993. The church was officially organized on May 15, 1994 and in 1995 the old lumber yard was purchased and the building transformed for services. The old building was demolished in the fall of 2003 and a new building constructed. On February 29, 2004 the new church building was dedicated.

FAITH LUTHERAN CHURCH worshipping at Seventh-day Adventist Church, 4607 47 Avenue FRONTLINE WORSHIP CENTRE 4904 - 50 Avenue Sylvan Lake’s Frontline Worship Centre was established in the summer of 1995 as a born again, spirit filled congregation affiliated with Open Bible Faith Fellowship, by believers who desired a closer walk with their Lord. In addition to weekly services and fellowship groups, Frontline hosts major conferences featuring prominent charismatic leaders.

GOSPEL CHAPEL Main Street South The Pentecostal work first began in Sylvan Lake in 1938 in Mrs. Wright’s cottage, ‘Rondebosch’. Then services were held in the W.I. Hall. In 1942 a building was purchased and moved from Lower Camp. In 1952 a Sunday School Hall was constructed and the name changed from Pentecostal Tabernacle to Gospel Chapel. In the early 1980s four acres of land south of the cemetery were donated for the current church site. Construction began in 1986 and the congregation moved into the new facility in 1989. A Christian Education Centre and new sanctuary were dedicated in March, 2005.

LIGHTHOUSE FELLOWSHIP CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE Worshipping at Steffie Woima School Lighthouse Fellowship began in the fall of 2000, with an Alpha study and a fellowship of a small group. A launch service held Easter Sunday 2001 was attended by 240 people. The church was officially organized as a congregation of the Church of the Nazarene one year later and now worships at Steffie Woima School. Plans are being made to build a facility on land that has been acquired.

They have an exciting children’s program, Kidztown, that ministers to children each Sunday through puppets, music, drama and teaching. During the summer this is

brought to children in the parks through the Kidztown trailer.

MEMORIAL PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 5020 - 48 Street The early pioneers of the Sylvan Lake community gathered first in their homes and then later in the Hazelwood Hotel then Dingwall Boarding House on 46th Street. The Ladies Aid Society was formed in 1921 and together with the Board of Managers they were able to obtain the property on which the present church building sits. The church was erected in 1921 by volunteer labour and dedicated August 6, 1922. For 25 years it was the only Protestant church in town.

The old landmark was demolished in June 1975 to make way for a new building. The new sanctuary was dedicated on April 11, 1976.

OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION PARISH 5033 - 47A Avenue Prior to 1912 services for the area’s Catholics were held in various places as improvements in the community were slow until 1911 when both the Alberta Central Railway (ACR) and Canadian Northern Railway (CNR) reached the community. On August 15, 1912 the modest church was dedicated and named Our Lady of the Assumption. In 1927 Sylvan Lake ceased to be a mission and became a parish for the first time. Then followed a period of transition in which it was downgraded to a mission, then back to a parish again. In the fall of 1964 the old church, which had served the parish for 52 years, was demolished and construction began. It was finished in the spring of 1965. Dedication ceremonies took place May 23, 1965. On August 15, 1976, a ceremony for the official burning of the church building mortgage was held. The congregation is currently planning a new facility on land acquired just off 60th Street.

SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTIST CHURCH 4607 - 47 Avenue The church had its early beginnings in the Burnt Lake-Centerville districts, meeting in homes. As more families moved into the area, the Burnt Lake School was used and in 1942 a new church was opened in that district. In 1969 members felt the need for a church in Sylvan Lake and lots were purchased at the corner of 47th Avenue and 46 Street. Work started in 1970

and the church opening was March 13, 1971. In 1986 discussion began to increase the size of the facility. An enlarged and renovated building was opened in June, 1997.

ST. MARY’S & ST. TIMOTHY’S ANGLICAN CHURCH 4308 - 50 Avenue On Christmas Eve 1946, an Anglican Church service was held in the Women’s Institute (W.I.) Hall. At a meeting early the following year the parish of St. Mary’s was formed. On August 31, 1947 the new church building was dedicated. In 1968 the parishes of St. Timothy’s, Eckville and St. Mary’s, Sylvan Lake were united to form the new parish of St. Mary’s and St. Timothy’s.

SYLVAN LAKE APOSTOLIC LUTHERAN CHURCH 3 miles south, 2.5 miles west of Sylvan Lake There has officially been a Sylvan Lake Apostolic Lutheran congregation since March 4, 1920, but Finnish families of the faith have been active in the area since 1911. The congregation has been affiliated with the Apostolic Lutheran Church Federation of America since 1932, soon after the federation was organized. Originally sermons were conducted in Finnish.

In the early 1950s when the congregation outgrew the homes, the Gospel Chapel was rented for a time. Then the W.I. Hall was rented until it was possible for the group to buy the former Marianne School in 1958. The school was remodelled and continues to serve the congregation.

A Walk with the Cross takes place on Good Friday with people carrying a cross through the streets of town, stopping at various ‘stations’ to pray for different sectors of our population. It’s followed by an inter-denominational service at the Alliance Church.

A Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast takes place in the fall. These are organized by Sylvan Lake Ministerial Association.

Bibles for Grads is another innovative event in the spring for all Sylvan Lake high school graduates.

LOTS OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR NEW HOMES, BUSINESSES AS GROWTH REMAINS THE THEME

Sylvan Lake is on the cusp of another expansion in the range of housing opportunities for new residents as growth continues to be the theme.

Commercial property is also available for businesses while the downtown area offers opportunities for new enterprises.

Lots in the final phase of the award winning Ryders Ridge subdivision are now being sold and plans for two new subdivisions have been approved. Work has started on clearing land, installing underground utilities and preparing beautiful view lots for sale. Both are situated on the ridge which overlooks the lake.

Immediately south of Ryders Ridge is The Vista in Ryders Ridge which is being developed by Melcor. The quarter section is bounded on the east by Highway 20, the north by Ryders Ridge and the south by Memorial Trail.

When this subdivision is completed it’s estimated it will contain over 700 homes for about 1,760 people. A school site is located in the middle of the subdivision while a stormwater pond will border the CP trail on the northeast and a park on the northwest joins a major park area in the adjacent Ryders Ridge and Crestview subdivisions.

Immediately east is Crestview, a quarter section bounded by 50th Street on the west, Memorial Trail on the south and Pierview subdivision on the north. Planned by Lamont Land Development, the same people who put together the Ryders Ridge subdivision, the

majority of housing in Crestview (625 units) will be single family residences. There’s also space for high density units (143) and mixed use (41 units). Estimated population on completion of the multi-phase subdivision is pegged at just under 2,000.

A large green space is proposed in the northeast corner of the property, immediately adjacent to the park areas in the Ryders Ridge and The Vista in Ryders Ridge subdivisions.

The two quarters are part of an annexation in 2006 which brought seven quarter sections of land (over 486 hectares or 1,200 acres) into the town. A growth strategy, planning and phasing for development of the land has been completed, projecting the town’s population could double in the next 10 to 20 years, to about 22,000.

Plans are also underway for another annexation to bring new residential land on the west and industrial land on the east inside town boundaries.

Across 50th Street to the west of Crestview is the Beacon Hill subdivision where houses are continuing to sprout. A new 73 unit apartment building is slated to begin there this year.

Detailed planning is also underway on the next phase of development at Lighthouse Pointe which is located southeast of Walmart.

Real Estate 77 Sylvan Lake experienced significant growth last year with 94 single family homes started and 95 units added in multiple housing buildings. Residential construction tallied $36.8 million of the year’s total of $54.2 million in development permits.

That was up just over 37 per cent from 2011 which was the lowest in many years. The 2012 total was also the highest since 2008.

The highest valued permit last year was for the new town hall ($7,236,031) which is nearing completion in the downtown core. An open house is planned for mid-June and it’s expected town staff will move in by August.

Commercial construction accounted for 8.7 per cent of the year’s total and included a new strip mall bordering Highway 20 at Herder Drive. Other construction and renovations took place in the two shopping centres off 47th Avenue — Hewlett Park Landing and Ryders Square — with new businesses opening.

Downtown, visitors will notice the addition of Bravo Gastro Pub which opened last fall. Another new eatery is Angelozzi’s Deli in Varsity Mall at the corner of 50th Avenue and 46th Street. And the ever popular Bamboo Hut has expanded. It’s located on 46th Street just south of Lakeshore Drive.

Also downtown, interior development is underway in the former Cobb’s AG Foods building to turn it into a mini-mall with space for a restaurant with outdoor patio and retail bays on the main floor and a second floor for office and personal services.

At the foot of 50th Street, the former Smugglers location has been taken over by Hockey Central which is moving its sports memorabilia business into the building and adding a sports lounge which will feature stunning views overlooking the lake.

Industrial construction totalled $5.2 million last year and included several new buildings in the area east of Highway 20 on Cuendet Industrial Way. In the first three months of 2013, the total building permit value was $10.1 million. This has included permits for 21 new homes and 16 units in multi-family buildings.

Planning and development staff at the town office are anticipating a busy summer season with several large projects at various stages.

About $610 million in new construction has taken place in the past decade, with 2007 registering the busiest year at $125.4 million.

Around the lake, the five summer villages recorded continued activity with new year-round residences and cottages being built and additions or renovations constructed. A lift station has been built at the entrance to Birchcliff and that community will eventually be hooked into a regional wastewater service. Norglenwold and Jarvis Bay are already connected to the town’s lagoon system.

While growth continues to change the texture of Sylvan Lake, its roots as a tourist resort community are deeply entrenched and continue to form the basis of a cheery welcome to everyone who visits.

Sylvan Lake is friendly and clean and offers convenient and modern recreational and shopping opportunities. And, interwoven with the modern day services is a vibrant and colourful history which will enrich the town forever.

One of the biggest changes visitors will notice is redevelopment of the marina site. During the winter, the marina was emptied of water, deepened, new retaining walls installed and the lighthouse demolished. New docks were planned for installation in late spring.

The boat launch will be open in time for the summer season but will be located in a different area of the site.

As well developer Sylvan Lake Harbour Ltd. is planning a four storey 40 unit residential condominium building with 94 underground parking and 42 surface parking stalls on the site. A second condominium building is planned later in place of the current building.

At the other end of Lakeshore Drive, Centennial Park is complete and a rededication is planned in conjunction with other events to celebrate the town’s Centennial in June.

Flyboarding report enhanced Sylvan’s renown Sylvan Lake’s reputation got a boost across the country last summer when the lake was the scene of a flyboard test ride.

Rick Mercer filmed a segment for CBC TV’s the Rick Mercer Report just off shore.

Flyboarding is a new water sport which propels its users up to nine metres (30 feet) in the air with water jets on their hands and feet. The Flyboard is used in conjunction with a S Sea-Doo. A Rick Mercer R Report representaa tative contacted c cousins Brody an an and Stephanie W Wells.

in Canada. Like Mercer, they first became aware of the sport through an internet video. After talking, the cousins decided to go to Florida, the centre of North American Flyboard distribution, to become certified instructors.

“These people are the pioneers in Canada,” said Mercer. “We did our due diligence, this was the place to do it. This was our absolute first choice.”

“I think I’ll be introducing a lot of people to the sport, and if it’s in a beautiful location then it’s my idea of a perfect shoot. I think we have three for three here,” Mercer told a Sylvan Lake News reporter last August.

The Flyboard website describes the sport as a combination of jetskiing, snowboarding, and acrobatic diving.
