he update to Fernie’s Leisure Services Master Plan is almost complete and the public is about to get a sneak peek at the draft of the final product. The City is hosting the second of two public open houses Wednesday, May 15 from 6 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. at the Fernie Aquatic Centre.

The revamp of the Leisure Services Master Plan began earlier this year and will see an overhaul of the document that guides the City’s decision making when it comes to recreational programs,

services, and facilities. The plan was last updated in 2004 and the revision process relies heavily on community input.

The first open house was held in February and the City also conducted an online survey to find out what the residents of Fernie want.

“Fernie is a very active community, residents are in and out of our facilities, and they have some significant concerns about the condition of our facilities, whether it’s age, or maintenance, or how our facilities meet their needs,” explained Cam Mertz, Director of Leisure Services. “We’re at a very

interesting crossroads now where the City of Fernie has to decide on two different paths.

“Are we going to continue with all of our stand-alone facilities that the residents are stating they use very frequently, but not necessarily to the level that they want to participate in? Or, are we going to build new facilities because the cost of maintaining all these standalone facilities is too much?

Should we build new facilities that are going to meet the needs of the community now and 20 years into the future?”

LEES and Associates, a landscape planning and

design firm, has stepped in to help guide the development of the Master Plan.

They received preliminary feedback from residents following a number of public engagements and consultations held throughout the winter and will be displaying their draft recommendations at the open house next week.

“This is the opportunity for people to qualify what is being put forward because this path is what we intend to follow for the next 20 years,” said Mertz. “No one intends for this plan to sit on the shelf, we want to actively implement and go forward with it, so it’s really

important to gauge where everybody is. We’re going to actually put forward a plan of attack and we want to make sure that the community is on board.”

Representatives from LEES and Associates and the City of Fernie will be on hand from 6 to 8:30 p.m. that evening to discuss the proposed plan with the public.

The final document is expected to be complete in June 2013 and will provide the operational and capital framework to assist the City as they address the growth, development, and recreational priorities of the community.

Grade 9 students learn about the trades

Grade 9 students got a lesson in trades at College of the Rockies.

ollege of the Rockies hosted 48 grade nine students from Elkford, Fernie, Jaffray and Cranbrook for a full day of trades-related activities on Wednesday, April 24 as part of the YES 2 IT (Youth Exploring Skills to Industry Training) program.

Students had the opportunity to practise their wood and metal-working skills in the carpentry shop while building bookshelves and then identified parts and checked fluid levels in cars in the mechanics shop.

College of the Rockies welding, carpentry and mechanics instructors, along with their grade 12 ACE IT students and apprentices provided instruction and mentoring for the students.

Competitions were held in hand nailing, sawing and operation of a Robertson screwdriver. Prizes for these skills competitions were provided by Teck Coal Ltd. and Resource Training Organization. WorksafeBC representative Jeff McKay was on-hand to ensure everyone remained safe.

College of the Rockies’ Regional Transition Coordinator Brian Conrad said, “This was an excellent event that was useful in exposing students to and exciting them about the skilled trades prior to their entry into senior secondary. It was also an opportunity to showcase what trades opportunities are available to them at the College of the Rockies.”

Elk Valley RCMP part of the NORMA fight against gang activity BLISSETT

O

ur small communities in the Elk Valley might not be impacted directly by gang activity, but the RCMP here say their work is still affected by it.

Earlier this week the province’s anti-gang police unit, the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU), issued its first ever Community Report.

CFSEU is the integrated team of 400 officers and civilians from 14 different agencies, including RCMP and municipal police forces, that disrupt and suppress organized crime around the province.

Their investigations have cracked big cases, such as the discovery of an audacious crossborder drug-smuggling tunnel in Aldergrove and the unraveling of a massive international money-laundering ring.

The CFSEU is now out to capture a bigger public profile with the publication of its firstever Community Report. The report can be read online at bc-anti-gang.com.

The Elk Valley RCMP is not directly involved in CFSEU, but they do work with the unit through information sharing.

“Thankfully, we don’t have any gangs that we know of in the Valley,” said Sgt. Will Thien from the Elk Valley RCMP. “But we receive information from the province and Alberta regarding movement of suspected gang members. Obviously, if they are travelling from the Lower Mainland to Alberta, there is a

good chance they will be passing through our communities.

“If we interact with any of them, we pass the information on.”

West Fernie Dike Project continues

T

he final two phases of the West Fernie Dike Project are set to begin this summer. Phases three and four will include rehabilitation work on the existing non-conforming dike, running from approximately 300 metres upstream of the West Bridge to 700 metres downstream of the West Bridge.

“Phases three and four will be basically putting down more bank protection and shaping

the bank so it meets provincial specifications,” explained Brian Funke, RDEK Engineering Services Manager. “There is an existing dike that was put in roughly 15 years ago, so we’ll be shaping that. It was put down in sort of an urgent situation and it could use some reshaping.”

Northwest Hydraulic Consultants will be completing the work, which is scheduled to begin this summer and extend into early fall.

Phases three and four are the

last steps in the project and will offer greater flood protection to West Fernie residents.

“Flood protection will be provided to 100 year flood events, so protecting those properties and infrastructure in behind the dike, as well as bank protection,” said Funke.

The improvements to the dike are just one part of the West Fernie Servicing and Restructuring Project, which aims to improve the area in an effort to have it join the City of Fernie.

Dealing with dementia

f you assemble three Elk Valley residents in a room, chances are good one of them knows someone with Alzheimer’s disease.

That’s how prevalent the disease has become, according to the non-profit Alzheimer Society of B.C. The statistics are more than just numbers.

They represent local families who are affected

by Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias – people just like the 36 per cent of Canadians who know someone living with the disease.

To help families, the Society, in partnership with Interior Health, offers a one-day caregiver education seminar, Getting to Know Dementia, on Thursday, May 16.

Participants will receive information about

Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, the brain and treatment options. They will also learn about tools for effective, meaningful and rewarding communication with the person with dementia.

Community Care Nurses will conclude the day with a discussion on local services.

The workshop runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Fernie Hospital boardroom. Registration is just $20. To sign up, contact Dee at 250-4238288.

Sparwood hosts election forum

parwood community members came out to the Causeway Bay Tuesday evening to hear what the two candidates in the running to serve as Kootenay East MLA had to say. The all-candidates forum saw Liberal incumbent Bill Bennett facing off against NDP candidate Norma Blissett.

Hosted by the Sparwood Chamber of Commerce and The Free Press, the forum gave the candidates the chance to answer a few pre-submitted questions before opening up the floor to the public.

As Glen Purdy moderated, Bennett and Blissett shared their views on several topics, including supporting small businesses, addressing the selenium water problem in the Elk Valley, and ensuring B.C. has affordable housing.

As the forum moved into an openmic format, it became clear that health care was an overwhelming concern for the voters in attendance.

Bennett was quick to call attention to the improvements made to health care in the Valley over the last decade, while recognizing that a lack of local doctors is still an issue.

“I know people in this room who have had to use our regional health care system, who have had to be taken to the regional hospital from Fernie, from Sparwood, and their lives have been saved. If you are really hurt, or really sick today in this region, your chances of survival are significantly better than they were 10 years ago,” he commented.

“There are a number of things that we have done to keep health care strong in the Elk Valley, and does it need improvement? Absolutely.”

Bennett added, “This is not a political issue, it’s not a financial issue, it’s an issue of guys my age who are doctors retiring, and there just aren’t enough doctors in the western world.”

Blissett agreed that health care was a large concern and one she would work towards addressing.

“There aren’t easy answers here, but we need to make it a big priority and work on it as best we can, and work with the community and all levels of government to do what we can.”

Following further questions about improving childcare services, generating government revenue, temporary foreign workers, and expanded training facilities for the Valley, the candidates wrapped things up with their closing remarks.

Blissett began. “You have a decision to make about whether you want to continue with more of the same, or if you want to take a chance and make a change to try to make things better,” she stated.

“We have a long term plan, we’re not going to be in for just one term, because it’s going to take more than one term to make things better in this province, but we have to start somewhere, and it’s going to start after May 14.”

Bennett countered, “Instead of changing for the sake of change, go with what’s working, work together, and help us build a stronger economy. Help us raise more revenue so we can finish the construction that needs to happen on Highway 3. We’ve already added a half a dozen passing lanes, we’ve replaced every bridge on Highway 3, we put a new high school here in Sparwood, we spent an enormous amount of money in the Elk Valley during my 12 years, and that comes because we have a strong economy.

“You should want to keep that going and not change back to a failed model that has proven to be unsuccessful.”

The Sparwood forum was the second of three Elk Valley forums leading up to the May 14 provincial election. The first was held in Fernie on April 24 and the third took place in Elkford on May 8.

Question everything you hear Rene Descartes said, “If you would be a real seeker after truth, it is necessary that at least once in your life you doubt, as far as possible, all things.”

I had the good fortune to receive my high school education in Fernie under the tutelage of several excellent teachers, but two of note, whose wise guidance served me well through university and graduate studies in leadership.

Mr. Vallance opened my eyes when he told the class that people were graduating from university with psychology degrees, not because they had a call to help people, or society with their problems, but rather with the expectation of working in advertising and politics. What disillusionment!

Mr. Hamilton opened my mind when, on the first day of Grade 12 history class, he held up our textbook and asked the class to put up our hands if we believed everything we would read from it was true. What an amazing class that was and what an important step towards a lifetime of critical thinking.

This brings me to the provincial election. It is up to voters to listen with discernment to what is being said, or not said, as is more often the case.

Don’t be fooled by the hype of “moving forward” (what does that even mean?) or fear mongering about other parties.

If we want to stop the political partying on our dollar, if we want to have a democratic government that represents all of us, don’t vote for anyone who speaks mostly to like-minded constituents in order to curry more favour and more votes. Vote for a candidate who could make a positive difference in the conversation that goes on in our provincial legislature.

Then this past week about 40 of your residents all descended on our park at the same time. These people

were some of the kindest and friendliest campers ever to visit here and I hope they come back soon.

The editor of The Free Press may have been at an all-candidates' forum in Fernie (editorial, last week) but it wasn't the one I attended.

Her attack on NDP candidate Norma Blissett is probably unprecedented in recent Free Press history.

I agree that Ms. Blissett started out a little nervously, but the way I saw it, within 20 minutes she had a handle on things and nailed the issues. From

She spoke decisively on mining and the Flathead and with more ease than Mr. Bennett on rural healthcare. Mr. Bennett may have identified some of the Liberal Party's mistakes but he certainly didn't address the deterioration of rural health services in the Elk Valley.

We should not think that because Miss Treharne is a newspaper editor her opinion is worth more or less than that of

anyone else who takes an interest in politics and is informed about them.

This is the first political editorial on provincial politics that I can remember her writing.

She has her biases just like other people have theirs’ and we should remember that when she puts her opinions in print, especially just before an election.

When he says how absolutely dreadful things were back then, he should consider the following.

The nineties were the second half of a 20 year decline in demand for B.C.'s resources which was halted only by China cranking up demand for metallurgical coal and other commodities at the millenium.

In the nineties too, the Pacific Rim experienced economic crises which affected B.C. – and yet the government of the day could pro-

duce two back-to-back surpluses in 2000 and 2001, and also boast the second-best GDP to debt ratio in Canada.

For all his hype, Mr. Bennett's government, in the boom of the early 00s, could only manage third place.

Secondly, 'tourism', despite Mr. Delich's allegations, boomed in the second half of the NDP nineties when the price of oil increased and Calgary money flooded into the valley.

Since he has not seen fit to mention them, we can perhaps assume that Mr. Delich

is comfortable with another aspect of his 'fundamental economics': for nine years the B.C. Liberal government has engineered the greatest gap between rich and poor, and has supervised the second worst child poverty rate, of anywhere in Canada.

I guess these are the things that those of us who 'clearly [do] not understand fundamental economics' just have to live with.

If we accept Ghandi’s logic for social change then the recent opinion section in The Free Press May 2 edition signals the end for Bill Bennett in the Valley. I guess when all else fails, personal attacks on character are the last resort. And while I could descend into mud slinging with the mountains of ammunition left lying about from the Liberal’s war on the working class, I think it better to raise the discussion back into the political sphere and discuss the problems facing our democratic society.

In the last decade or so under the Liberals, corporations have flourished under unusually low taxes and become fantastically rich as a direct result. Consequently big business has purchased both the Liberals and most of the media.

They have begun dismantling unions through legislation and are using the media to convince people that what’s good for big business is good for workers. They have now begun the move to privatize all

Think about what that means for education and healthcare – the more rare something is, the greater its value and hence profit. That’s why these core services were made public to begin with! Education and healthcare is our society’s level playing field. No matter the economic class an individual is born into, we should all get the same chance as we start life. It’s called social democracy. Since when do we abandon the next generation of our own species in exchange for short-term quarterly profits?

We need to stop this greedy assault on our social democracy! Norma Blissett understands this and that’s why I’m voting for Norma and the NDP. I have no problem hiring an honest math teacher to replace a lawyer, any day of the week.

In its financial platform, the Provincial NDP has announced its intention to apply a capital tax to all B.C. Credit Unions with capital in excess of $20 million should they be elected. If this policy is implemented, it will have a significant impact on our organization and the people and organizations associated with us.

Ski resorts are like golf courses. The big money comes from the sale of the private lots connected to the resort.

Golf courses and ski resorts are lucky to break even. When you have private lots, a municipality, and a mayor and council, the government becomes responsible and the developer can walk away with whatever he has in pocket, leaving a fullfledged self-sufficient community at the end of a road depending on attracting customers from a market that was struggling to survive before Jumbo started looking for a share.

Resort Municipality before the sale of lots began and considerate of Bill Bennett to promote the resort but with all the out-sourcing, off-shoring, intra-company transfers of under-qualified foreign workers and union-busting through legislation, the skiing market is not the only market to be undermined. The right-wing governments in Canada don’t seem to realize that in a free market economy you actually need a market that has enough money to buy what is being produced.

NATURE OF POSITION: This is a Full Time position that performs duties as an Operator III. This position encompasses a variety of general and specific labour type duties related to the maintenance of the District of Sparwood’s fleet, infra-structure, buildings, roads, parks and other facilities, as well as operating equipment under the current Operator III designation. This employee may be engaged in anything from installation, maintenance and repairs of roads, sewer and water systems, sidewalks, parks, fields, gardens and equipment.

This position receives general direction and varied levels of supervision from the Director of Operations or his designate. Responsible for efficient and effective operation and must assure own safety as well as the safety of others.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: • Valid Class III Drivers License or higher with Air Brakes Endorsement (provide abstract).

• Physically capable of lifting heavy weights etc.

• Rubber tire loader, back-hoe, track loader and all equipment experience listed under Operator II. • Grade 12 Education or equivalent.

• Capable of following oral and written directions.

• Able to perform duties as set out in the skills assessment for this position.

The District of Sparwood recognizes the contribution that seniors make to our community. Those Sparwood seniors who have, or will, reach the age of 75 years this year are invited to attend a Council Meeting to sign our “Senior’s Birthday Book”. They will also receive a lilac lapel pin (Sparwood’s flower) that has been specially made to commemorate the occasion.

The students have raised over $12,500 for the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation so far this year and there are still on-line donations coming in – an incredible amount for a small school of 222 students!

Fake dynamite closes transfer station and highway

H

ighway 3, Home Hardware, and the surrounding area were evacuated on Friday morning when staff at Fernie Transfer Station discovered what they thought might be dynamite on the floor.

The six sticks of dynamite, bound together with a detonation device, turned out to be fake, but only after the RCMP’s Explosives Disposal Unit was brought in later in the afternoon.

RDEK Communications Officer Loree Duczek, said,

“Upon investigation, it was determined they were empty cardboard tubes and contained no explosives.”

Highway 3 and the area around it had been closed for most of the day.

“This is a good reminder for the public to think twice about what they are disposing of. This situation could have been avoided had the person responsible simply informed the staff what they had,” said Duczek. “This package looked very real and we have to take every precaution to protect our staff and the public at our facilities. Not only did this cause an interruption in the

operation of the transfer station, it resulted in a highway closure, impacts to neighbouring businesses and significant RCMP resources.”

The investigation into how the package came to be left at the Transfer Station will be conducted by the RCMP. “I’d like to thank the Transfer Station staff, Ministry of Transportation and the RCMP for their quick response to this incident and the public for their patience as we worked to determine the safety of the scene. You just can’t take chances in circumstances like this,” added Duczek.

“Talk to anyone who has been touched or diagnosed with cancer and I’m sure they’ll tell you it’s life changing. Some very good things have come from my breast cancer – no more mammograms, more room in my suitcase (no bras to pack), money saved on not having to buy shampoo, cream rinse or haircuts!

And when else would my sister and I have been able to spend so much time one-on-one while she sat with me hour after hour at chemo. My family was truly the “wind beneath

my wings” and even when I felt I was in the “shadow of death” “my cup truly runneth over”.

I also learned some very valuable life lessons over the past year. I could talk about many but I won’t – there is one I’d like to share.

How many of you have “something special” like a set of dishes that never see the light of day? A special dress that you are saving for just the right occasion? A ring that stays safely tucked away? Well let me tell you I kept some “bras for special”. Guess what? They aren’t going to do me any good now. What did I think? They wouldn’t make any more bras? Use the dishes, wear the dress, enjoy the ring – today is what counts. Let tomorrow look after itself.

For some of us the journey ends in a different way. A way that makes us sad and lonely and maybe even angry. But I ask you tonight to remember the good times, the love and the laughter that you shared with your loved one. Feel their hand in yours, feel their arm around your shoulder, feel their breath on your cheek. Remember the fun times you had, remember the funny times – I’m pretty sure that is what they’d want you to do today and always.

And tonight we do remember – that is what today was all about.”

ike in every other sport, there are specialists in this field. In addition to acquiring some consistency with your swing, your choice of tools is also very important. Your physical abilities, your style of swing, as well as your wallet, determine your optimum choice.

The speed of your swing determines the type of shaft to use: flexible, regular, or stiff. Too many golfers use an overly stiff shaft. An expert can steer you to the correct type of shaft after watching you hit a few balls.

The size of your grip can be modified to suit the size of your hands and the length of your

fingers. If you are among the average, a regular grip is right for you. It is important to judge the performance of a grip at the start of the season.

Golfers who stand more to the right or lean over because of their height should adjust their posture (lie) to the angle of the shaft, in relation to the club head. However, before you adjust your posture by one or two degrees lower or more to the right, there has to be a minimum of consistency in your swing; if not, it won’t have much impact on your results. xcited children gathered at the District of Sparwood office Monday morning to celebrate Japanese Carp Day. Mayor and council members hosted the festivities in honour of Sparwood’s sister city Kamisunagawa.

The Japanese national holiday takes place every year on the fifth day of the fifth month to celebrate children and their happiness.

Following a quick lesson in Japanese culture, the kids watched the raising of four traditional carp flags outside of the District office, to represent a father, mother, and children.

he Sand Creek Recreation Club held a month of basketball skills and drills, for grades 1 to 4 kids to learn the basics of basketball and for fun.

The aim of the program was to

encourage children to be active as well as promoting fun and fitness through sports.

The Sand Creek Recreation Club hosts a variety of activities throughout the year for various age levels.

The next event will be their walka-thon on June 1 at the Jaffray Hall.

South Country kids learned to shoot hoops at the Sand Creek Recreation Club’s month long basketball skills and drills program.

Passtrak’s season opener

asstrak, the Crowsnest Pass track and field club, took part in its first outdoor competition of the 2013 season in Calgary on Saturday May 4.

It was a four-hour minimeet designed to “clear out the cobwebs” after being indoors all winter.

Three Passtrak athletes competed in two events each and came home satisfied with their results for the day.

Her second event was the 100 metres, which she completed in 13.72 seconds for a fifth place out of a field of 31 athletes. She was the fastest 14-year-old in that event.

Alisi Ratudradra, also a 14-year-old girl, ran in the 80-metre hurdles and the 200 metres. Unfortunately in the first event she hit a hurdle late in the race and fell which placed her well back in 13th in a time of 16.69 seconds. That gave her some extra motivation for her 200-metre race

where she finished second overall out of 36 athletes in 27.57 seconds and was the first 14-year-old across the line. That was a lifetime best for Alisi in that event as well as a new Passtrak club record.

Madison Gostick had two events in the Youth girls division, (16 and 17 year old athletes). She placed 10th in the 100 metres in 15.91 seconds and then finished fourth in the javelin where she threw 12.80 metres.

Strong head winds during all the sprint races prevented the athletes from producing faster times but there will be ample opportunity for that during the rest of the season.

he week of April 21 to 29 was international dance week, the same week as BC Arts and Culture week, and dancers from the Creative Energy Arts Factory in Fernie spent time teaching preschoolers a few moves.

The Creative Energy team made special guest appearances at Bright Beginnings preschool to teach dance and creative movement. Students from Creative Energy Arts Factory also spent the week delving into the art of self-choreography and of course working on their routines for the Aladdin Show on May 23 and 24.

All dancers had their names entered into a draw for one of four dance scholarships for $250. The lucky winners will be announced at the year-end show.

In the spirit of celebrating dance and the performing arts kids of all ages participated in various dance and theatre activities.

Alana Rybar, Principal Director of Creative Energy Arts Factory, said the purpose of international dance week is to heighten the awareness of dance and its contributions to our culture.

“I always tell my kids that dance at the studio (as well as theatre and singing) can take the world from black and white to a spectrum of colours.

“It’s like a rainbow for the soul. That is the essence behind international dance week.”

EMSLIE: It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Iain Harold Emslie on April 18, 2013 at the Elk Valley Hospital, at the age of 75 years.

Iain was a wonderful family man, he loved the Sunday morning breakfasts and the Friday night dinners because it meant whoever wasn’t working would come home to visit. Farming was his second love, breaking the land and seeding a new crop and watching it grow was his passion. At 65 he started snowmobiling and could keep up to the best of them. At 72 he started golfing so that he could spend some time with his wife.

Iain fought a hard battle but eventually succumbed to his illness. He is survived by his loving wife Ruth, children; Ken (Judy) and their sons; Mike, Derek, Brandon and Jordan, Gord (Joanne) and their sons; Jay and Christopher and his daughter Joanna (Robin) and their daughters; Amber, Breana and Cailin. Also left to mourn his passing are his sisters; Elizabeth, Felicity, Heather, Evangeline, Susan, Prescilla and brother in law Allan as well as his brother William (Annette). Iain was predeceased by his parents Elizabeth Grace Emslie and Dr. William Harold Emslie. He will be dearly missed by his friends and family but the memories of the good times in the past will live on.

MCLAREN: The family of Robert (Bob) Nicholas McLaren would like to share his passing on May 2, 2013. Bob was born in Trail BC on August 26, 1937 and remained there until relocating to Elkford BC in 1973. The Elk Valley would become his permanent home. Bob worked at Fording River as a machinist until retirement. Bob loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He will be greatly remembered for his quick wit and one-of-a-kind personalities.

Bob leaves behind his loving wife Rosemary, his three girls Susan(Don) Tait, Lori (Kim) Krish, and Sheri (David) Taylor, his grandchildren Jason (Julie) Tait, Jessica (Jason) Bown, Jared (Tiffany) Krish, Ryan and Adam Taylor and his great grandchildren Lincoln and Levi Bown and Emi Krish.

He also leaves his mother Seena, sisters Donna and Linda. He was predeceased by his father Gordon and brother Larry.

In order to respect his request, there will be no service but instead just a simple toast to acknowledge and honour a man that will never be forgotten and that can now be at peace and free.

WAKULCHIK: John passed peacefully from this life April 24, 2013 following a gradual decline in health. He was 84 years old. John was supported by his loving family and his caregivers during the last days of his life. He was born in Poland but has lived in Canada since immigrating here in 1939.

John is survived by his son Ron (Sherry) Wakulchik and daughters Kathy (Blair) Chatterson and Debbie (Colin) Paton; grandchildren Lisa (Bruno) and Mark Wakulchik, Cody and Lindsay Chatterson and Kyle and Taryn Paton, and great grandchildren Ava Bruno and Keegan Wakulchik. He was predeceased by his wife Leona and his son John.

A loving father and grandfather, John enjoyed spending his time in Mother Nature’s playground; fishing the local lakes and streams, hunting the backcountry he knew so well or tending to his beautiful gardens. John’s life has left a legacy for his family and future generations to treasure.

MARASCO: A lifetime resident of Fernie, Jack Marasco, passed away peacefully at his home on the 27th of April, 2013, at the age 77.

Jack was born on the 20th of December, 1935 in Fernie, BC to Frank and Assunta Marasco.

There were 9 children in the family – 6 brothers, 3 sisters.

Jack is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Marasco, his son Kevin of Fernie, BC and daughter Melanie Glanville (Steve) of Okotoks, AB, 4 grandchildren: Addison and Kylee Glanville and Ty and Austin Marasco, his sister Suzie Czeh of Fernie, BC and his brother Tom Marasco of Port Alberni, BC as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, his brothers Sam, Ernie, Louis and Jim and sisters Rose Kumorek and Mary Miller.

Jack started his career with Crowsnest Industries in the lumber division. He then worked for Kaiser Resources (Greenhills) as a heavy duty equipment operator.

He finished his working career with Sowchuk Trucking.

Jack was an outdoor enthusiast! He loved camping, fishing, and hunting with his friends and family. He enjoyed curling, golfing and playing baseball and also loved to play cards.

The family would like to thank Dr. Soetaert and Wayne Fisher for all their patience and help with Jack.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at the Holy Family Catholic Church. Interment followed at St Margaret’s Cemetery.

or those too busy to hit the spa, there’s a new way to get your nails done in town. Fresh 10 Nails offers a mobile manicure service that comes right to your doorstep.

With her daughter entering kindergarten, Jennifer Champagne found herself with a little extra free time on her hands and decided it was time for a change.

“I used to work for a cosmetic company so I like that kind of spa product environment,” she explained. “I wanted to try to do something different so I went to Calgary and I took this manicure course.”

Although Fernie isn’t lacking in places to get pampered, Jennifer is hoping her unique mobile business

will set her apart. “I know there are quite a few spas in town, but I thought this would be cool,” she remarked. “I make my own hours and it’s a good service. I can go to people’s homes, hotels, hospital rooms, and it’s great for moms who can’t get out but want a treat.”

She added, “I like the whole process of having people in the comfort of their own home.”

The service is simple. Jennifer comes to you with all of her supplies, and 45 minutes later, your hands are feeling smooth and looking brand new.

“I like the finished product, I like to see the result. You have someone come in and when they leave their nails look fresh and nice,” shared Jennifer. “I really do enjoy talking with people and watching someone actually sit down and relax for 45

minutes instead of running the rat race that we all live in. It’s just a nice little treat.”

She’s been successfully running Fresh 10 Nails for just over a month and Jennifer has already served up more than a few manicures to Fernie locals at home, as well as visitors in their hotels. She has plans to expand into other spa experiences in the future, but for now, it’s all about the nails.

“I think I’m probably going to continue to update my services at some point,” said Jennifer. “I might look into doing a couple different courses over time, but right now I’m just focused on doing manicures. I think it’s just so fun to do, I really like it.”
