Nineteen parties represented in B.C. election The candidate nomination period for B.C.’s 40th General Election closed at 1 p.m. (Pacific time) on Friday, April 26.

NEWS What’s in your name?

Last week I wrote about Amelia Earhart; how a documentary on her life and disappearance left me lying awake at 4 a.m. thinking about her tragic disappearance. I was talking about her to my family when our son noted, “I’ve always thought it was strange her name was Amelia Earhart.”

Oddly enough, given all that time spent staring at the ceiling, I hadn’t thought about it.

Earhart, pronounced Air Heart, certainly was a fitting moniker.

If anyone’s heart could be said to belong to the air, it would be Amelia’s. And it wasn’t as if she married her husband because she was attracted to the name.

Earhart was the name she was born to and the name she would keep when she married George Putnam.

quoted events in Amelia’s life that forecasted a career in the clouds.

In 1904 at the age of seven she convinced her uncle to assist her in building a ramp off the roof of the family tool shed.

She then positioned a wooden box at the top of the ramp and climbed inside. It ended pretty much how you would expect; bruised lip, torn dress but also an unwavering “sensation of exhilaration.”

She is reported to have enthusiastically told her sister, “Oh,

The second incident took place 16 years later at the age of 23 when her father paid a famous pilot ten dollars for ten minutes of flight.

“By the time I had got two or three hundred feet off the ground I knew I had to fly,” Amelia said of the experience. The name of the pilot who took Amelia for her first flight? Frank Hawks.

For a career in aviation, if your last name couldn’t be Earhart, Hawks would do just fine.

The Romans used the term “nomen est omen” meaning “name is destiny” for how our monikers shape our lives from birth to relationships to choice of careers.

phenomena. Aptonym is another id iom used for those whose occupations or situations have a close connection with their names. Interestingly enough it seems to be our last names—the ones we don’t have any say in—rather than our first or middle names that pack the dollop of destiny.

Some examples offered by The Canadian Aptonym Centre on Wiki include Ornithologist David Bird, Police officer Scott Constable, Artist Helen Painter and Anesthesiologist Dr. Knapp.

Others I can think of are a little less glaring, but interesting just the same. Ellen Degeneres-- pronounced ‘de generous’—is famous for being generous to a variety of causes as well as for being a comedienne, talk show host and actor.

The miracle believers might say our names are our destiny, while the non believers would call it coincidence saying everyone’s last name certainly doesn’t match their profession and we only notice the ones that do. And some names don’t seem to translate into a lifeinterest at all.

Like my birth surname Haight. A Google search reveals it means someone who lives at the top of a hill. I do live on a bit of a hill now but I grew up in a valley.

We often hear people say they aren’t as tall as they used to be. We do lose a little height as we age. After we reach 40, we lose about 0.4 inches of height every 10 years. Okay, I’m back. It would appear that McKinnon means ‘fair son’ or ‘fair born’ and is often translated as ‘love’.

I don’t know what that means as far as an occupation goes, but it does make me smile.

You see, when faced with the decision to take Darcy’s last name or keep my own I chose to take Darcy’s for a few reasons.

One, I liked how the last four letters were the same as my first name.

I don’t know why I liked it, I just did.

I also liked how it didn’t require any follow up explanations.

I love my family, my origins and my roots, but Haight wasn’t the easiest name to grow up with.

When people weren’t commenting

on my red hair they were coming up with witty retorts such as “Shannon Haight?

You must hate everything”. Schoolmates aside, I found most people were reluctant to properly pronounce it as ‘hate. Instead they would tentatively say “Height” with a question mark and wait to be corrected. This polite tendency to say ‘Height’ is probably how it came to mean living on a hill rather than “Someone who hates” which would have been terrible.

What makes me smile is that by taking on the name McKinnon it would seem I went from Haight to Love.

Cariboo North: Duncan Barnett, NDP Duncan Barnett is the NDP candidate for Cariboo North.

Duncan Barnett People tell me that they are concerned about good, family-supporting jobs here in the Cariboo. That’s why the foundation of the BC NDP platform is building a diversified economy that creates good

jobs and a strong middle class. We need an economy that is running on all cylinders and that means strengthening all sectors, especially traditional industries like agriculture, forestry, mining, and tourism.

The creation of a strong and stable market for food growers and producers is a priority for a NDP government. We will bring back the successful Buy BC program and increase extension services to provide farmers and ranchers with more direct support for meeting regulations, espanding operations and marketing.

Recently, I joined Adrian Dix as we an-

nounced a $310 million investment over five years to support good jobs in our forest industry and to improve the health of our forests. After years of BC Liberal mismanagement, our forestry sector has shed thousands of jobs. Our plan will make significant investments in improving forest management and health, supporting communities suffering from timber shortages due to pine beetle and in identifying and expanding export markets.

Government can’t do everything. That’s why the NDP is proposing practical steps on a few priorities, including better home care for se-

niors, new investments in agriculture, and making life more affordable for families by reducing daycare costs. We will also take steps to restore faith in government by banning corporate and union donations to political parties.

As your voice in a new government, I will work hard to deliver results for people here in the Cariboo. Let’s elect a new government and a new MLA who will make a real difference in our communities.

After 12 years of BC Liberal government, people in the Cariboo are ready for a change.

It’s time for a new government with better priorities.

People are our greatest resource. I believe that government needs to invest more in people to equip them with the tools they need to succeed and be creative, innovative and productive members of society.

We are concerned about our public education system. Under the current government, education in the Cariboo has suffered and classroom conditions have worsened. An NDP government would invest in hiring more teachers, teaching assistants, librarians and counsellors to ensure that our children get the education and attention they need.

Cariboo North: Coralee Oakes, Liberal Coralee Oakes is the Liberal candidate for Cariboo North.

I believe in the abundance of the North Cariboo, of its people and its resources. My family moved here during the great depression of the 1930s and our story has been one of hard workone step in front of the other- generation and generation- to make this community successively better for the next generation. I have always loved to hear the story of our family moving to the North Cariboo to carve out their new lives. My family’s dreams and their faith, that their choice would ensure a better future for our family. My family was very proud when I had the opportunity to attend and graduate University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science. This education has provided with an amazing job which, I have had the great privilege to work at for fourteen years, as the manager of the Chamber of Commerce. This job has provided me with leadership opportunities both in our community and at the provincial level representing small business

I have also had the honour to serve the community of Quesnel as a City Councillor for six years. I am 40 years old with no children and most of my family live in Cariboo North. What about the NDP’s balanced budget platform in the 1996 election that became the “fudge-it budget” debacle? Or, Gordon Campbell’s 2001 platform promise to not sell BC Rail, and his 2009 commitment to not introduce HST? Political party candidates have no idea which promises in their platforms are real and which are simply vote-getting rhetoric. Nor do they know what their leader’s real agenda for B.C. is until they after the election.

The reason for this is simple: party platforms are not based on

Bob Simpson a set of coherent principles or deep policy work; they’re merely a collection of promises designed to keep the party’s traditional voting base happy while not scaring away other potential voters.

As an Independent, I can commit to my constituents that I’ll never have to put a political leader or political party’s interest over theirs. Unlike party

MLAs, all of my votes are free votes and all of my work as an MLA is based on my own assessment of a particular issue formed through research and conversations with my constituents.

With that freedom to represent my constituents’ needs, I will continue to work for fairer treatment for seniors.

Our seniors should not be paying MSP premiums, and more seniors’-related health services and benefits should be fully covered by MSP. I will also continue to advocate for more home care and affordable housing for seniors, as well as an end to DriveABLE testing in favour of real driving tests.

I will continue to challenge the next government to address the systemic causes

of poverty and make more affordable housing options available in all our communities. Any tax money invested in poverty reduction and affordable housing will benefit our local economies because that money will be spent in local businesses.

As an Independent MLA, I will be free to challenge the next government to undertake meaningful reform of our education and health care systems.

These systems should not receive more tax money until they have been carefully and collaboratively reformed to make sure that direct patient care and student learning are their true focus.

I will also continue to promote more rational and sustainable development of B.C.’s abundant natural re-

sources and seek a shift in focus back to B.C.’s renewable sectors: forests, farming, and fisheries. British Columbians deserve to get more direct benefits from our natural resources; not just jobs for British Columbians, but also more direct revenue to the provincial government in the form of royalties and resource rents.

Rural communities must also obtain more direct benefit from the natural resource extraction taking place in their region, and First Nations rights and title issues must be addressed.

I would also work with all MLAs in the Legislature to reform our democratic systems so every MLA will be able to actively and freely represent their constituents’ interests.

Election issue: child care and early education Tom Fletcher Black Press Child care policies offer a clear choice between the B.C. Liberals and the NDP in the May 14 provincial election.

Premier Christy Clark wants to take a provincially funded savings account set up for each child born since 2007, and hand out $1,200 to parents who open a Registered Education Savings Plan to begin saving for post-secondary training. Former premier Gordon Campbell established the fund when the B.C. government was enjoying budget surpluses, before the 2008 downturn in the world economy.

That’s added to the B.C. Liberal “early years strategy” that includes full-day kinder-

garten, $142 million for child care subsidies, $34 million for “Success by Six” programs in 225 communities, and an additional $32 million promised over three years to help create new licensed child care spaces.

NDP leader Adrian Dix has promised to cancel the RESP and other new spending, and redirect it to a “Family Bonus Program,” a direct subsidy of up to $70 per month, per child for low-income families starting in 2014.

The NDP plan would pay the full amount to families with annual income of $25,000 or less, with payments decreasing on a sliding scale to families with income under $66,000.

Applying to all children under 18, the bonus

program is projected to cost $210 million a year.

Platform highlights: • The B.C. Conservative pre-election platform offers no specific programs for child care or early childhood education.

Its September 2012 policy document supports “the principle that parents are the child’s first and most important teachers.”

B.C. Conservatives also support a school voucher system, “ensuring that taxpayers’ dollars follow the student to provincially approved educational options,” and the principle that social services be “delivered by community-based organizations rather than directly by government.”

• The B.C. Green platform promises to

create “local child care trusts” monitored by the provincial government. Promised services include “child care, in-home support, emergency and crisis services, a guaranteed livable income and safe and adequate housing.”

The B.C. Green platform offers no costing estimate for any of its programs.

• The B.C. Liberals would require school districts to promote use of school property by licensed child care providers from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays, and create a province-wide child care registry.

• The B.C. NDP would immediately double earnings exemption for employable income assistance recipients, and allow a further exemption for child maintenance payments.

NDP plan is borrow and spend

NDP leader Adrian Dix has finally rolled out his “fully costed” election platform.

Major policy announcements had been released previously, but there was plenty more spending added to the total.

The NDP’s health care plan is surprisingly modest – more money for home support, residential senior care, mental health and addiction services and a rural acute care initiative totaling $159 million over three years.

As health critic Mike Farnworth points out, the residential care increase will allow seniors two baths a week instead of one. Full marks to the NDP for this part of the platform.

Increases to Community Living B.C., children and families programs and aboriginal friendship centres are also commendable.

Other NDP proposals don’t inspire as much confidence.

Raise welfare rates $20 a month and index them to inflation. Index the minimum wage to inflation too, at a time when inflation can only rise.

Set up a new child bonus program to send $70 per month for each child with family income under $25,000. Lesser pay-

ments would go to families with income up to $66,000.

This ’70s-style family allowance scheme is based on a “child poverty” claim that misrepresents federal statistics of relative income distribution. The program is optimistically budgeted at $210 million a year. Dix insists it isn’t a “big new social program,” which makes me wonder what would qualify.

It would be partly funded by cancelling a B.C. Liberal plan to establish education savings accounts for kids born after 2006. Out with self-reli-

ance, in with the nanny state.

Another $100 million is added to hire more teachers, to address the teachers’ union’s oftenrepeated but false claim of “a decade of cuts” in education.

Another $100 million goes to student grants, much of it further subsidizing the oversupply of English, education, sociology, women’s studies, journalism and other university grads who eventually discover there is little demand for their degrees. As with welfare, increasing support for bad choices can only

yield more bad choices.

On a related note, the NDP will revive a ministry of women’s equality, “to promote social and economic equality to all government programs....”

As with female candidate quotas, the NDP keeps the flame of ’70s socialist feminism alive.

The party totals up its new program spending to $988 million over three years. That’s exactly the amount Dix estimates will be raised by tax hikes on corporate income, bank capital, personal income over $150,000, carbon tax on oil and gas drilling, and cancelling the

B.C. Liberals’ RESP and child tax credit plans.

As for deficits, the NDP claims that the B.C. Liberal budget hides a deficit of $800 million this year and similar deficits in the next two years. The B.C. Liberals point to an impressive string of “net zero” wage settlements with public sector unions, the core of their spending control record.

Would the NDP continue to hold the line on public service wages, as the B.C. Liberals have done?

Dix’s NDP caucus and staff is stocked with former government union

officials. Party president Moe Sihota is essentially a direct employee of the same unions. The B.C. Federation of Labour has shaped the NDP’s Labour Code changes, which we won’t see until after the May 14 vote.

And how much money does the “fully costed” NDP plan set aside to pay wage increases for its government union brothers and sisters? Zero.

Since this is the party that appears to be cruising to victory in the May 14 election, I’ll look at what’s not in their platform and other issues next week.

Just treading water, thanks It was summertime and the living was easy………. We spent our summers on boats and here we were again trolling for ling cod on the inside of the Active Pass (on the way to Vancouver Island).

Trolling is tedious for a kid so we entertained ourselves by jumping off the front of the boat and catching the swim ladder as the boat went by – although we were going very slowly, I guess there was a bit of a risk.

However, mom and dad had every confidence in our swimming abilities so there were few restrictions to this activity. In fact, it was hot that day so all of us were “skuddy” – that’s “naked” in grandmother-ese – while we swam,

There was no answer so I got up and went out on the back deck where dad sat, guiding the boat as24 it slid slowly through UNIT the water.

Cariboo-Chilcotin: MLA Donna Barnett, Liberal Donna Barnett is the incumbent MLA in Cariboo-Chilcotin.

I am seeking reelection as the MLA for the Cariboo Chilcotin.

I am proud of the many accomplishments that have been fulfilled since my election in 2009.

I have enjoyed working jointly with the citizens of Williams Lake and the Cariboo Chilcotin to achieve these accomplishments.

These are some of our successes: The opening of Deni House, a 28 bed residential care home. Repaving of Mackenzie Avenue, opening of Eagles Nest Housing unit and the Strong Start Program for our children.

Funding of $3 million for the Cariboo Chilcotin Beetle Action Coalition, upgrade to the airtanker base, the opening of Jubliee Place, and the TRU First Nations Gathering Place.

Donna Barnett Funding for the extension of Williams Lake River Valley Trail, $200 million being invested in Cariboo Connector, and $2.6 million invested in Thompson Rivers University training programs.

Expanding the Driveable Program for seniors and partnering with United Way for Better at Home Program for our seniors.

Diversity in the economy with new

revenue streams needs to occur to keep our economy strong.

Taxpayers can afford no more increases. Our forest industry is rebounding from the global economic downturn due in large part from the government finding new markets in China.

This downturn also impacted the tourism industry and ranching.

All this effects small business which is a major employer.

We must continue to diversify our workforce.

We must continue to expand our Trades and Training programs.

Expand opportunities and grow TRU University.

Continue planning and upgrade the Cariboo Memorial Hospital.

Support our doctors and nurses, our education system, the mining industry, especially the New Prosperity Mine.

The Cosmetics Spring Gala celebrates summer with free experiential demonstrations on spring make-up techniques, gel nails, skin consultations, relaxation and healing demonstrations, as well as gift giveaways, free samples, snacks and refreshments.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 4 with the spring make-up session running from noon to 4 p.m.

The Cosmetics Spring Gala is also a fundraiser for the Look Good Feel Better program that helps to support women experiencing the effects of cancer and its treatment.

Due North Wellness will be there to provide visitors with demonstrations of Reiki, the Japanese art of energy healing, and Healing Touch.

Additionally, the group of women share common experience, fears, concerns and laughter. Simply put, it’s the “feel good” factor. Since 1992 Look Good Feel Better has helped more than 500,000 women living with cancer.

Cariboo-Chilcotin: Gary Young, independent Gary Young is running as an independent candidate in the Cariboo-Chilcotin.

He submitted this information to the Tribune as his running platform.

Let’s get rid of a few things that are bad for voters, taxpayers and BC and start with these: 1. Banning all corp/ union donations immediately as parties are collecting them as we speak 2. Eliminate the transfer tax on primary residence sales, new and used and ensure closing of the “trust” loophole. Eliminate the same tax on used vehicles, boats, aircraft.

3. As the only province still charging MSP premiums, let’s get rid of them starting immediately with all Canadian residents in B.C. who are over 65.

4. Dissolve the Pacific Carbon Trust within three months and an immediate halt to any payouts.

5. No raw log exports immediately. All such logs currently do not meet “export” criteria and should be directed to B.C. mills for value added products.

17. Move to instate electronic voting. Costs would go down. Referendums introduced to get voter reaction to controversial issues. i.e. additional taxes, major projects.

BC Chamber of Commerce concerned The BC Chamber of Commerce is very concerned about justannounced changes to the Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) program, including new fees for businesses and measures that will cause hiring delays and make the program unusable for many small businesses.

“These changes will hit many B.C. businesses hard­­– especially small businesses,” said John Winter, the BC Chamber’s president and CEO. B.C. businesses span-

ning from highly skilled workers in construction and the digital industries through to BC’s tourism and hospitality industries rely heavily on the TFW program to hire skill sets that aren’t available locally.

Winter said the BC Chamber supports efforts to help Canadians fill Canadian jobs.

He added that the BC Chamber recognizes that there are concerns with a few unscrupulous employers.

But he said the proposed changes to the

TFW program will have serious fallout.

“Many of the small B.C. businesses that rely on this program don’t have the deep pockets to weather new costs and can’t afford to have empty positions with no workers available to fill them,” he said. “These changes aren’t just hasty: they’re dangerous.”

Winter said the changes in no way reflect the information and advice that the BC Chamber provided to the federal government when recently consulted on the

TFW program.

“The federal government asked us for our view on this program, but has ignored it completely,” Winter said.

“This is a serious overreaction on the government’s part; the program worked.”

The BC Chamber is calling on the federal government to halt its just-announced changes to the program and launch a more substantive review of the program that calls for – and listens to – more input from industry.

BOUQUET OF DANDELIONS BOUQUET OF DANDELIONS We are all called to be saints – yes – even you who are reading this article.

One of my favourite saints is Saint Therese of Lisieux (France). What I love about this beautiful woman of God is that she did absolutely nothing extraordinary, performed no miracles, and accomplished nothing big. She, however, did little humdrum daily duties with deep love.

In his book Spiritual Childhood author Vernon Johnson offers an analogy to help us embrace the example that Saint Therese set for us as she herself followed in the footsteps of Jesus Christ.

Allow me to paraphrase this analogy.

There was a little boy named Johnny.

And Johnny loved his Mom. He would often search for his favourite book and give it to Mom. Next, he would look for his favourite toy and give it to Mom. Then he would go to the backyard and collect all the dandelions and give them to Mom. Now, Mom does not need the book, or the toy, and most definitely does not need the dandelions. The toy, the book, and the dandelions in themselves mean nothing to Mom. But what Mom cherishes is the love behind the toy, the book, and the

BY Father Derrick dandelions. The ‘love’ behind these things gives ‘life’ to these little gifts.

So likewise in the Christian life, we are the children of God through the gift of baptism, and we, as children, give many things to God as our loving Father. We give Him our prayers, good works, fasting, almsgiving, and sacrifices. We give Him our every action, our joys and our trials of life.

But these things are all a bunch of dandelions to Him. God the Father does not need any of these. But what He is looking for is the love that we put behind the prayers, good works, fasting, etc. Then these “little

bouquets of dandelions” that we give to God our Father will ‘melt His heart’.

Another analogy tells the same message but from a different perspective. Little Gianna wanted to get her Dad a Father’s day present.

So Gianna’s Dad gave her five dollars so that she could buy a present for her Dad on Father’s day.

We are exactly like Gianna in relationship to God our Father.

We too need to be like Johnny and Gianna and realize that everything comes from God our Father and we are called to give it back to God with love.

Jesus tells us that “unless you turn and become like little children, your will not enter the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 18:3). Saints are those who do not selfishly hold on to anything (thereby excluding themselves from heaven), but freely receive all and give all back to God the Father. All earthly gifts are preparations for the final and ultimate gift: heaven itself. We must learn to be like little children who can let go of all earthly things, including unforgiveness and grudges, in order to receive the gift of heaven.

By Jean Atkinson Richbar Golf & Gardens So much for spring, as I write this the snow is accumulating on the deck rail. I’m fortunate that I can get my spring fix by walking into the greenhouse and inhaling that magical earth smell.

So that’s just what I did this morning.

The benches are covered in tiny seedlings, some just poking up through the soil while others are beginning to flower. A new season begins, one filled with new possibilities and colour combinations.

I ask the queen of combinations what her new favorite might be.

Anne says she is very impressed with the new coleus called “Vino”.

With a name like that who wouldn’t be?

She likes the way it pairs up with non-stop begonias.

Anne holds up a scarlet begonia, then a pink one, then an orange one next to Vino to show me what she means. The combination transports you to some tropical island, especially on a day like today.

Deep wine coloured leaves grow darker in the sun. The lime green edge brightens any shady corner. This coleus is very versatile as it will grow in sun or shade. It flowers very late so almost

never so has a very clean appearance. Vino is 45 cm tall and has a spread of 60 cm (18 in. x 24 in.).

Coleus makes great fillers for containers adding rich texture and colour as well as helping other colours really ‘pop’ out at you.

I suggest pairing Vino coleus with the new bright red ‘Cabaret’ Caliobrachoa in a partial sun or sunny location.

I was going to make a comment about vino and cabernet as that is where my mind often drifts to when I‘m writing articles but I have realized it is cabaret, okay back on track. Million Bells, Mini Petunias or as we affectionately say, “Calis” are always in

great demand as they make great additions to hanging baskets, window boxes or containers.

They do best in average to evenly moist conditions, but will not tolerate standing water.

Cabaret’s flowers stay open and flower even under low light conditions. Plus the trumpet shaped crimson flowers are magnets for hummingbirds.

The other new Cali is ‘Can-Can’ with its rich dark purple flowers that won’t fade under high light.

The last couple of years the demand for these dark purple, almost black flowers have been the rage and the trend is

still going strong. These unique flowers have a tropical feel to them when paired with foliage plants.

What caught my eye was the unique face of ‘Patchwork’ Cosmic Orange impatiens. It is the first tri-colour impatiens.

The flowers are very funky with an orange background, white center with a purple star blast. Now I’m thinking …..Pina colada or shovel the snow?

Cultivate an herb garden Herbs will grow best in well-prepared soil.

Make sure that it is rich in organic matter and drains well. Also, for plants like parsley, be sure to have deep pots or dig deeply in the garden to establish long taproots.

Until the weather warms up, you may want to begin herb cultivation indoors and then transfer plants outside during the summer. Basil, is a

tropical plant that does well in warm conditions.

Therefore, it will need to be kept away from drafts and get several hours of direct sunshine a day.

Place most herb planters in a south-facing window of a home to ensure they

get ample sunlight and to allow the soil to dry between waterings.

B.C. residents willing to pay more for social services A majority of British Columbians not only wants improved community social services, but is prepared to pay higher taxes to provide them.

That’s one intriguing finding from a poll conducted by Strategic Communications (Stratcom) for the Roundtable of Provincial Social Services Organizations of BC. The same poll found there is a broad public perception that access to needed services has declined significantly, despite growing demand.

“We know services supporting seniors and families and children are important, and a good investment,” said Roundtable member Tim Agg, executive director of PLEA Community Services Society. “It was heartening to learn that a majority of British Columbians agree, and are willing to

pay a little more in taxes to provide needed help to people.”

The poll found 53 per cent of British Columbians supported increased funding to community social services, even if it meant they would pay higher taxes.

Support for higher taxes to provide needed services for children, families and seniors has increased 12 per cent since a similar survey in 2000, Agg noted.

The poll also found that 57 per cent of British Columbians felt current funding for community services is too low, with only six per cent believing it is too high.

Agg said the Roundtable engaged Stratcom, an international research company, to survey British Columbians on issues relating to the community social services sector.

The survey found British Columbians are less confident that services are available to prevent problems or crises than they were 13 years ago.

In 2000, 45 per cent of the public believed access to support services in their communities was good or excellent. Today, only 36 per cent give high ratings for access to services.

The survey found 74 per cent of British Columbia residents had used community social services themselves, or knew someone who had. That’s down from 81 per cent in 2000.

“Our fear is that the need is still there, but budget cuts have made it impossible for families to get help,” Agg said.

Agg called on all political parties and candidates to heed the poll and commit to a long-term funding plan to provide

needed community social services.

More than 90 per cent of those surveyed said services for youth, women who have experienced violence, people with disabilities and special needs, seniors, people with mental health and addiction challenges and families and children are important.

“People are pragmatic, and compassionate,” said consultant Tim Beachy, another Roundtable member. “They know it is right to provide seniors with supports so they can live in their own homes.

And they know it is far less expensive than a care home.”

“The public also understands that years of budget freezes - and cuts - have left community agencies in crisis,” he said. “Waiting lists for help, even for urgent as-

sistance like support for vulnerable children and youth, people with developmental disabilities and victims of violence, have grown.”

Almost 80 per cent of British Columbians believe community social services have a positive impact in their communities.

“The public gets it,” Beachy said. “But we need to hear the candidates and parties make clear commitments to fund these vital services.”

The poll was conducted April 9 to 11 and used a representative sample of 802 adult British Columbians. Margin of Error is not reported for online polling as it is not derived from a probability sample.

A special stream of programming was also held for young victims of impaired driving, ages 15 to 25.

“The weekend offers support to victims of impaired driving and helps them see there is a light to grasp as they cope with their terrible losses,” said MADD Canada National President Denise Dubyk.

“None of us can change what has happened. But we can show one another that we are not alone in our struggles. For so many victims, including myself, there is great comfort in knowing others understand the journey of an impaired driving victim.”

The cornerstone event of the weekend, the Candlelight Vigil of Hope and Remembrance, occurred on April 27.

With photos and the lighting of a single candle for each victim, the ceremony offered delegates a safe and supportive

environment where they could pay tribute to the loved ones they’ve lost as a result of impaired driving or acknowledge injuries caused by impaired driving.

Sharing the perspective of victims, and talking about the issues that affect them, were the topics in several meetings with Members of Parliament on Wednesday April 24, as a small group of MADD Canada representatives visited Ottawa during National Victims of Crime Awareness Week.

Specifically the group wanted to talk about a 2009-report released by the Federal Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights called Ending Alcohol-Impaired Driving: A Common Approach.

That report made 10 recommendations to better address the problem of impaired driving in Canada.

of view, were the recommendation to implement random breath testing, and two recommenda-

Conference for Victims of Impaired Driving in Toronto.

Approximately 200 victims from across Canada took in keynote and workshop sessions covering a wide range of topics designed to help them as they cope with traumatic, life-altering experiences.

Pam Herman, MADD Williams Lake Chapter, said the organization sent Rayel MacDonald’s family to Toronto.

Rayel is the 20-yearold second-year nursing student who was killed on April 22, 2012 when she was hit by a truck while crossing Carson Drive in Williams Lake.

The driver was charged with impaired driving causing death and impaired driving causing bodily harm.

After her death the community rallied to fundraise for a memorial bench in her honour, and the sale of plastic bracelets with Rayel’s name and a promise not to drink and drive, helped toward the memorial and sending the MacDonald family to the conference, Herman said.

Sentences at issue Continued from A25 Sentencing is a particularly important issue for victims. MADD Canada has long promoted the need for stronger sentencing, particularly in cases of impaired driving causing death.

In fact, MADD Canada has established its own framework for sentencing ranges, which it believes meet the purposes of sentencing and better represents justice for the victims. (MADD Canada’s Sentencing Framework for Impaired Driving is available in the Resource Library of the MADD Canada web site.) In yesterday’s meetings with MPs, MADD Canada’s representatives talked

about sentencing and specifically about the recommendations in the 2009 report which called for longer sentences for repeat offenders, and longer sentences for those with blood alcohol concentrations at double or more the legal limit.

“We still have hundreds of people being killed in impairment-related crashes each year, and thousands more being injured,” said Ms. Dubyk.

“We as a country need to be doing more to stop this.

That is the message our group shared with MPs and we asked for their support in urging the Federal Minister of Justice to move forward with those three recommendations.”

The Fairburn family announces the passing of Wilfred Fairburn on October 20, 2012 at the age of 66.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years Rebecca; children Andrew (Meghan Lee) and Laura; grandson Lyndon; siblings Judy (Ray) Desaulniers, Wayne (Bonnie), Ernie (Ramona), Garth (Lou), Lorraine (George) Beaulieu, Tina (Lou) Pilaszkiewicz, Clinton (Kelly); many nephews and nieces; stepmother Doris Fairburn of Clinton, BC; cousins Fairburns (Tacoma, Washington), Sartorius’ (Maple Ridge & Langley), Schuks/Nicholsons/Hamms/Holts (out west) Wilsons (Williams Lake and Kamloops), Switzers (BC, Alberta & Saskatchewan); mother-in-law Erna (John) Peters (Abbotsford), sisters-in-law Karen (Dan) Poirier (Cranbrook), Maureen (Ivor) Marriott (Prince George); brother-in-law Randy (Grace) Beaumont (Surrey), one nephew and four nieces on that side of the family.

He was predeceased by his mother Ora Joyce Fairburn of Kamloops (1998), his father Erwin Fairburn of Williams Lake (2006), his father-in-law John Poor of Williams Lake (1985) and his step-father Edward Dale of Kamloops (1997).

Wilfred was born October 19, 1946 in Vancouver, BC to Erwin and Ora Joyce Fairburn. He was the oldest of eight children. He lived in Vancouver, Port Alberni, Fisherman’s Cove, Greenwood, Grand Forks and possibly a few other places, too, before coming to Williams Lake in 1953.

Wilfred received his education attending schools in Grand Forks and Williams Lake, and after worked for Arms Brothers, Boss Mountain, Lignums, Jacobson Brothers Forest Products that turned into Riverside (where Wilfred went onto disability), then saw it change to Tolko (when he went into retirement).

He worked for Jacobson Brothers/Riverside/Tolko for over 30 years.

He met Rebecca Poor on July 2, 1971, and they married April 8, 1972. Together, they raised two children. Wilfred loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing and camping and took his family on numerous trips, leaving them with great memories.

He was jack of all trades, as he did his own mechanics, wood working/carpentry, some plumbing/heating/electrical. If he didn’t know how to do something he would buy a book on it, read about it and then get the job done. He loved music and old Western and War movies. Wilfred took Computer Programming and PC Repairs to enhance what he was teaching himself on the computer and got diplomas in both, with highest honours in PC Repairs.

He enjoyed spending time with his grandson, watching him grow and learn. He bought him a new bike and was so happy when he got to see him ride it without the training wheels on, as he didn’t think he would get to see that day. Wilfred liked day lilies and irises and planted many in their yard.

The family would like to thank Dr. Hagler of Kelowna, Dr. Avanessian of Kamloops and Dr. Hutchinson and Dr. Labossiere of Williams Lake and the nurses in Ambulatory Care in Williams Lake for the care they showed Wilfred.

A memorial Service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at Calvary Church at 625 Carson Drive with Reverend Corwin Smid officiating. Donations can be made to the Cancer Society or the charity of the donor’s choice. Cremation was held at Cariboo Crematorium.
