Heather Johnson returned from Boston Sunday a little weary, but surprisingly upbeat despite the bombings that tore through the finish line of the Boston Marathon.

Johnson ran in the prestigious event and had finished the 26.2 mile race approximately an hour and 40 minutes before two explosions near the race finish line killed three people and injured more than 250.

“It was very emotional,” said Johnson.

“By then Chris (Kent) and I were back at our apartment, and I had my feet up and I was relaxing and trying to drink some water and recover a little bit. We just heard a bunch of sirens but it’s not unusual to hear sirens during a race, because people hurt themselves in races. So we didn’t think anything of it.”

It wasn’t until the Fruitvale couple started getting texts and Facebook messages from Greater Trail residents asking if they were okay, that they became aware of

the bombings.

“We turned on the television to find out what was going on and saw all this chaos happening, and at that point I started trying to get a hold of family and friends and people who were worried about us.”

Despite the harrowing events, Johnson and Kent stayed in Boston for the remainder of the week as the police continued to hunt down the suspects.

“We were in Boston until Sunday, and through the whole ordeal the city was very, very positive and very welcoming to the tourists,” she said.

“There was never a point where we felt we should go home.

We really enjoyed ourselves, all in all it was a really positive experience and I see the city in a very good way, just the way they handled everything.”

The attack was traumatic for many, but for Johnson, while the emotional impact at the time was undeniable, she’s determined not to let it affect her and the way she approaches her sport.

“I can’t let it change

the way I look at races, or I’m just never going to enjoy it as much as I use to,” said Johnson.

“That’s one of my strengths in racing is to be able to forget about stuff that could negatively affect me, and just concentrate on the positive, and so far it works for me so I just need to stick to my plan.”

Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev carried out the devastating attack on the Boston Marathon.

Using improvised bombs made from pressure cookers, the Russian-born brothers detonated two devices at the race.

Three days after the outrage, the pair was involved in a dramatic gun battle with police on the streets of Boston. Tamerlan, 26, was gunned down and died at the scene.

Dzhokhar, 19, was found several hours later hiding in a boat in a suburban backyard. He allegedly tried to kill himself but failed. He has since been charged with use of a Weapon of Mass Destruction and malicious destruction of property resulting in death.

When news of the arrest was released, tension broke and the city celebrated.

“You could feel the city getting more and more tense,” explained Johnson.

“But when they finally caught him . . . the city just went up into a big party, and after that it was just an amazing experience.”

Anthony Crosfield,

a decorated and internationally acclaimed hairdresser, received the Distinguished Alumnus award and also received a standing ovation for his address to the graduating class, which was full of humour and wisdom.

Tessa Munro received the Student Professionalism award from Katie Weir before Lauren Zanier, valedictorian, wrapped things up for the formal proceedings.

Congratulations to all of the graduates of 2013.

Ninth in a series on West KootenayBoundary place names.

We conclude the first letter of the alphabet with a look at some smaller places.

Annable The Warfield suburb of Annable was previously known as Jackson’s Siding and Winn. The former, according to the Warfield Golden Jubilee booklet, was for a train conductor “who researched transportation methods along the CPR between Rossland and Trail.”

An early reference appeared in the Nelson Daily News, July 29, 1910: “Twentyfive men were also

sent to Jackson’s Siding where there is a bad fire …”

Winn, meanwhile, honoured a Rossland lawyer employed in the office of the planer mill established by George Malcolm (Mac) Annable, after whom the neighbourhood was finally christened.

(Annable’s grandson published a book about him called The Laugh That Shook the West.)

From the Daily News, January 12, 1912: “The post office department has decided to change the name of the town from Winn to Annable and the CPR will put the change into effect on their next working timetable to be issued. The railway name for the station at this place is now

Jackson’s siding.”

The post office opened as Winn on August 1, 1910 and was renamed Annable on March 1, 1912. It became Trail sub-office No. 2 on November 1, 1938 and closed August 31, 1956.

When Warfield was incorporated in 1952, 62 per cent of residents preferred to call the village Warfield instead of AnnableWarfield. But Annable is still in common use and there is a road by that name.

Although Arrow Park has actually ceased to exist, its memory lives on with the surviving Arrow Park Ferry.

The cross-country ski area between Nelson and Ymir appeared in the civic directories by 1910.

It was a flag station along the Great Northern Railway. It’s

sometimes referred to as Apex-Busk, the latter referring to the site of Camp Busk, named for Charles Westly Busk, founder of the first Nelson boy scout troop.

Arrow Park Also known as West Arrow Park, it is 19 km south of Nakusp on the west side of Upper Arrow Lake. The post office opened December 1, 1908 and closed on May 29, 1968 following construction of the Hugh Keenleyside dam that inundated the community.

Although it essentially ceased to exist, you can still catch the Arrow Park ferry, and an annual reunion is held there hosted by the Friends of Old Arrow Park.

Boyd LaLonde is on a mission to walk from Lund, B.C. on the Sunshine Coast to Sydney, N.S. on Cape Breton Island on the East Coast, and if that wasn’t enough of a journey, he then plans to walk all the way back.

The 49-year-old is on an estimated three-and-a-half year journey to mend a broken heart and write a book about his experiences.

“I am bringing a vial of Pacific Ocean water to the East Coast, I will dump that in the Atlantic Ocean and then get a vial of Atlantic water and walk back to the West Coast and dump that into the Pacific,”

“It’s such a beautiful area here and the people are so warm and welcoming,” said the Sunshine Coast walker. “I really enjoyed my time here.”

New organizer needed for Rivers Day Trail staff West Kootenay Advertiser

The Skills Centre, a local organization that has spearheaded the BC Rivers Day celebration in Trail, is surrendering the reigns and is hoping there is another group willing to take over the coordination.

The event included the annual shoreline cleanup of the Columbia River and wind up celebration afterwards at Gyro Park.

“Just given everything we have on our plates right now we can’t carry on coordinating this,” said Carol Corbett, manager of Employment Services at the Skills Centre.

“We’re really busy with a number of different contracts, some are quite demanding on staff time and resources and it doesn’t leave us the space and time to continue.”

Enlisting the help of community partners the 44th Field Engineers, Teck,

and the City of Trail, since 2008 the annual shoreline cleanup has removed more than 112,000 pounds of garbage and debris from the banks of the river around Trail.

“There’s still more clean up to be done,” said Corbett.

“There are still old car wrecks and scrap metal along the river and there are still people who seem to think it’s okay to dump their garbage over the banks so it has to be an annual thing.”

The Nelson Police Department is reminding motorcyclists to ride safely this spring after an accident last week.

On Wednesday just after noon, the local police department, Nelson Fire and Rescue and the BC Ambulance Service were called to a single vehicle accident on Highway 6 and Ymir Road, near the Highway 3A exit.

A motorcyclist had lost control trying to change lanes to get onto the ext ramp. His bike slid approximately 50 metres before coming to a stop.

Shirley Bell of Christina Lake is a local advocate with the BC Lupus Society.

Lupus is one of the more than 100 kinds of Arthritis. Lupus will cause inflammation in any and/ or every part of the body. The Latin name for lupus is Wolf as many people with Systemic Lupus Erythermatosus [ SLE. ] will get a red rash that covers the cheeks and nose of the face like the markings a wolf has. This rash today is called a butterfly rash.

Lupus is known as the disease of 1,000

faces because of the vast number of body parts that it can affect.

SLE is the most serious kind of lupus as it can attack any of our organs, lungs, eyes, blood vessels, muscles,and the brain to name a few. Lupus is an autoimmune disease where the body attacks itself.

The healthy cells in our body get confused and attack the harmful free radicals and our healthy protective cells — this is like a war going on inside the body 24/7.

Many who have lupus also have fibromyalgia and Raynaud’s syndrome. Photosensitivity from

UVA and UVB rays can bring on a lupus flare. The involvement of the central nervous system can cause impairment of cognitive thinking, fatigue, depression, loss of memory, confusion, seizures and more. Lupus also mimics other diseases such a M.S. As you can see this disease is very complex. I am writing this article to spread awareness and let people know that we desperately need funding for more research to be done.

We need specific treatment for lupus because at this time there is none.

One drug is called Plaquenil which was invented for malaria and by chance they found that it helped with the face rash in lupus.

My best friend and sister, Gloria, died 34 years ago of lupus at the young age of 42 and she was on the same medications we have today and the same ones that were used 50 years ago.

Fifty thousand people in Canada, 1.5 million in U.S.A and five million world wide have lupus. The good news is that we have research being done at UBC just for Lupus.

I have had SLE for

more than 22 years and the symptoms keep coming. I am grateful that I can operate a small business from my home and I have met many friends running this little business that I love.

Number one on my bucket list is to let as many people as I can know about lupus, therefore I am working with the BC Lupus Society to be an advocate for education about this disease.

Time could be running out for Trail food bank submitted

Unless things turn around the once-aweek food bank at Trail United Church will soon become a once-a-month operation. Food bank coordinators Marylynn Rakuson and Eleanor Harper have seen donations drop off and numbers of clients increase far beyond their ability to manage.

The food bank, which operates every Tuesday of the month, except the second Tuesday when the congregation of

St. Andrew’s Anglican provides the service, feeds over 100 people a week. Those attending have steadily increased in number while the closure of some key local employers may be affecting donations. Individual and corporate donors aren’t coming forward at the same rate as in the past. If this continues, the church sees little option but to cut back on the distribution of food.

“We can’t keep going the way we are,” says coordinator Eleanor Harper. “We’ve

Local establishments invited to ‘Taste of the Kootenays’ TIMOTHY SCHAFER West Kootenay Advertiser

The Rossland Chamber of Commerce is looking for local restaurants, pubs, coffee shops, bakeries and retailers of food in the city to join in the centre piece of the local hospitality industry and showcase their culinary creations.

Held on Saturday, May 25 (5-9 p.m.) at the Prestige Mountain Resort, the Taste of the Kootenays is a virtual buffet of the best in locally made food and drink from the Golden City and across the region.

Staged in the Ross

Thompson Ballroom and Kirkup Room at the Prestige, vendors set up tables and sell food (tapas, amusebouche, small bites) to guests who purchase tokens (for $2 each). Seventy per cent of each token is paid back to vendors following the event.

Vendors charge an amount equalling the piece of food they are sampling, but it’s up to them to decide what to bring, to sell and sample.

“The purpose of these small bites is to allow guests to move through the room and patio and sample as many foods and beverages as possible,”

said Rossland chamber executive director Renee Clark. “There will be some limited seating available, but we want people to walk, mingle, sample and taste.”

The event will have some live music and there will be some door prizes, as well as some of the region’s favourite wines and beers.

The goal for those attending will be to see what they may be missing from the culinary scene, while the goal for vendors is as a marketing tool, to showcase new menu items, feature winter menus, new products or to showcase their

chef ’s talents.

Rossland businesses participating in the event must be members of The Rossland Chamber of Commerce. Memberships will be pro-rated until the end of the year.

Menus must be planned in advance and submitted to the chamber of commerce by May 17 to ensure menus can be printed and there are no repetitive items at the event.

The $50 registration fee includes the table, power, water, some ice on site, limited refrigeration, unloading and set up volunteers, as well as on site volunteers

to help at the table through event.

A Tasters Choice award will be voted on by the public, with the winner receiving a gold chamber membership for 2012 ($195 value).

La Dolce Vita: Reaching high at Naramata’s Upper Bench SUBMITTED

It doesn’t seem like too many years ago that we first stopped into a new production facility, one of the growing number of wineries on the Naramata Bench on Penticton’s north side.

It was a winery and distillery. Cool idea, we thought, as craft distilleries were just starting to come into vogue.

Cool ideas aren’t enough to grow a business on, though, and now that same facility is Upper Bench Estate Winery, and it seems to be thriving.

And it doesn’t hurt that it is now also home to a cheese factory, where some very fine products are being made in small batches.

Gavin and Shana Miller certainly have the pedigree to make the business work.

The English-born Gavin has plenty of winery experience in the Okanagan, having worked at several wineries. Shana learned the tricky art of cheese-making at Poplar Grove, working along side Gitta

Sutherland, who continues on with her own superb factory.

“She was ready to fly out on her own,” Gitta told me as we shared a dinner table in Naramata last week.

In addition to their work skills, the Millers are blessed with charming personalities, as evidenced by our visit to Upper Bench last Saturday.

Both Gavin and Shana were behind the tasting room counter, along with a staff member or two, as they served a steady stream of customers.

We settled in for a chat, another writer stood with her notebook on the counter, customers came and went, and no one felt like they had been ignored.

When I mentioned our visit to the original premises, Gavin laughed and talked about their purchase of the place, which had gone into receivership. It seems that the owner had installed a distillation system and was busy making spirits before he had a license.

He then learned that putting a distillery

on property in the Agricultural Land Reserve is a no-no unless the spirits are being made from plants grown on the property. The result was that the Millers took over a property with thousands of litres of spirits that had to be dumped.

Upper Bench produces Merlot and Pinot Noir, in addition to the Zweigelt, red wines. Whites include Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Reisling Today, Gavin is making a very nice selection of wines, all nicely balanced. On the morning of our visit, he had hand-labeled some of the newly bottled Zweigelt, which quickly sold. When we wanted to buy a few bottles he ducked into the back to stick the labels on our purchases.

A cool climate red, Zweigelt is a versatile, light red wine that pairs easily with food but when lightly chilled becomes a very nice patio sip-

per.

It was on a visit to Okanagan wineries last year that we once again became open to Chardonnays, having long since abandoned the varietal that had become one - d i me ns i ona l, the market flooded with over-oaked wine tasting of vanilla, with a creaminess that comes from secondary malolactic fermentation.

In recent years, though, winemakers have started to produce unoaked, or lightly oaked versions, letting the fruit do the talking and reminding consumers that Chardonnay has some lovely characteristics. Our tasting at Upper Bench at that time helped confirm that Chardonnay is on its way back.

Upper Bench produces Merlot and Pinot Noir, in addition to the Zweigelt, red wines. Whites also include Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Riesling, all clean and crisp on the palate, with great floral notes.

Once again we couldn’t resist purchasing some of the

Rosé wines, dry, fruity and with a surprisingly full body.

We made our wine selections, after having also tasted a few samples of cheese, then moved to the cheese counter and decided to make things easy.

We bought one piece each of the half dozen cheeses available on that day. They are all marvelous.

Shana is a meticulous cheesemaker, going beyond regulatory demands to ensure that her products are safe. Each batch is tested in a food lab before she puts in the shelf.

“It’s expensive,” she said. “But I don’t ever want to be responsible for making a customer sick.”

From our experience, sick customers will never be an issue at Upper Bench Estate Winery. Two very nice, very talented people, doing what they love to do and giving it everything they have. Now that is a winning business plan.

“We shop mostly locally and watch the sales to spend the dollars wisely,” says Marylynn Rakuson.

“Local store managers and staff do a wonderful job making sure our dollars stretch as far as possible. The donation of bread and baked goods is very much appreciated and used to provide coffee, baking and fellowship. Without the generosity and assistance of local merchants we could not manage to assist the needy in our community.”

The food bank benefits from the efforts of many willing volunteers and it’s lack of overhead, as the church covers all operating expenses.

“We hope reducing hours won’t be necessary but maybe it’s inevitable,” said Harper.

“There are fewer people employed and, therefore, fewer people available to help fund the food bank, while more people need to use it.”

Keith Simmonds, the minister at Trail United Church, said, “It’s one of those times when we do all we can and put our trust in God’s abun-

dant love. Something will come, someone will respond, somehow we’ll weather this too. We are in this together.”

People who need the food bank are hoping that the service will be able to continue weekly. Only time will tell. If funding does not increase, however, food distribution will take place on the fourth Tuesday of the month only.

Boundary Similkameen candidate dumped Grand Forks briefs Mere days after a recent all-candidates meeting in Grand Forks, the BC Conservatives announced Mischa Popoff is no longer their candidate in the Boundar y-Similkameen riding. Popoff writes opinion pieces for newspapers in the Okanagan area and was said to have made some objectionable remarks in some of the columns.

Provincial election voting in the Boundary Country Voters in the eastern section of Boundar y–Similkameen have several opportunities to vote. Advance polls are available on May 8, 9, 10 and 11 at the Rock Creek and Boundary Fair Pavilion in Rock Creek and the Grand Forks Seniors’ Hall at 565 71 Avenue. Polls are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day.

On General Voting

Day (Tuesday, May 14) polls are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Christina Lake Community Centre, the McArthur Centre in Greenwood, the Midway Community Centre, the Rock Creek and Boundary Fair Pavilion and the Beaverdell Community Hall.
