Ridge Meadows Home Show, moving inside out Plant sale, fashion show new this year
C
lose to four hundred exhibitors will be at the Ridge Meadows Home Show, featuring everything from interior design, home renovations, outdoor lifestyle, health and wellness and family fun. The Home Show is May 3, 4, and 5. It opens at 4 p.m. Friday, then 10 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday. The Outdoor Lifestyle and Leisure Show will be a major portion of the Home Show this year, with an emphasis on backyard gardens. There will be vendors for hot tubs, barbecues, fire pits, swimming pools, including the new endless pool and out of the ordinary outdoor furnishings. “It was a natural progression to move the quality of booths we have inside, outside, into the Outdoor Show, but changing it up just enough so that it is unique and different,” said Cassandre Winder, Ridge Meadows Home Show project coordinator. New to the Outdoor Show will be a direct-from-thegrower plant sale. High-quality bedding plants, planters and window boxes full of flowers will be for sale in addition to the popular hanging baskets.

Inside the Home Show, there will be everything from interior design ideas, how-to home renovations and delicious product samples. Also new this year will be a Swim and Active Wear Fashion Show. A fashion show featuring real women as models will have enough theatrics and performances to make it interesting, says Winder. The fashion show will take place at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday only on the new stage, located in the middle of the fairgrounds. A big draw for families at the Outdoor Show will be the BMX track. A track will be built on site beside the main

Fairgrounds stage. Families are invited to try out the sport. Bicycles and helmets will be provided along with instruction by Canadian Olympic BMX coach, Adam Muys. There will also be BMX demonstrations. The Try It Zone will feature golf and tennis. There will also be a number of people promoting active lifestyles with a Participaction Bring Back Play presentation. Yuen’s Family Martial Arts will have a Ninjas obstacle
course. There will be a Creative Craft Kingdom, a petting zoo and bouncy castle. “Basically the kids can come down and run around for free,” said Winder. Norden the Magician, voted the 2012 KIDabra Children’s Entertainer of the year, will be headlining the main stage. In the corral by Golden Ears Winter Club, Western Powersports will be holding the Western Yamaha Riding Academy.

In addition to riding mini-motorcycles, children will also get to try out miniquads. Safety equipment and instruction by professionals will be provided at the closed off track. Participants will go through an orientation of the bike’s controls and functions, do a balance check, perform a walk through of the brakes and throttle instruction. Then, after passing an instructor aided first ride the student can drive solo on the enclosed track with the instructor monitoring. There will be stands for parents to watch. The West Coast Amusements midway will be set up at the west side of the fairgrounds for rides, games and concessions. Nevada Bob’s Golf and Heather Hill’s Farm and Golf Course will be holding the longest drive competition. The winning drive will receive a one year membership at Heather Hill’s. Admission to the Outdoor Show and Family Festival is free. Inside the Home Show, there will be everything from interior design ideas, how-to home renovations and delicious product samples. Award-winning interior designer, Ronnie Vanstone of Design Alley Interiors will have a fully stocked design studio at the Home Makeover Showcase with hundreds of samples of texture, colour and finish for interior design projects. Vanstone and her team of experts will be conducting complimentary consultations and holding information seminars all weekend long. Bring in your project photos or sketches and Vanstone along with her team will help you choose paint, wallpaper, cabinetry, appliances, tiles, flooring, window coverings, interior and patio furnishings, custom art glass, lighting, fireplaces and accessories.
Haney Builders will be taking over a large section of building A. They will be bringing all their home renovation experts and knowledgable factory representatives to give one-on-one advice on products and answer questions. This year human traffic will be rerouted through the Golden Ears Winter Club lobby, where a new sampling area will be set up. “So, the first thing you are going to do when you get to the show is have a little nibble and sample various products and then you go into the show,” said Winder. Body, Mind and Spirit A Journey of Discovery will have three days of intuitive readers, mediums and energy practitioners at the Psychic and Wellness Fair. Fans of the Home Show will be eligible to win a $2,500 room makeover. To enter, ‘Like’ the Ridge Meadows Home Show on Facebook. Then post a photo of the room you would like for the makeover on the timeline of the Make-Over Contest album. Get your friends and family to ‘Like’ your photo and the Ridge Meadows Home Show. The photo with the most ‘Likes’ will win. Contest closes May 5 at midnight. The winner will be notified by May 10. Provision of materials, installation and labour is limited to a room with the dimensions of 14x16 or the equivalent square footage and larger rooms may be subject to a fee for service and increase in cost of materials. • Admission to the Home Show is $4 for individuals and $7 for families. Parking is free and will be available at Planet Ice, 23588 – 105 Avenue, or at the Albion Sports Complex, 23778 - 104 Avenue. Shuttles will be available from the sports fields with donations going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

rt Deco is the theme for the Home Makeover Showcase at the 2013 Ridge Meadows Home Show, hosted by award winning interior designer Ronnie Vanstone. Vanstone, of Design Alley Interiors Inc., says this year’s showcase will be fun and over the top. “We thought it would be fun to show people how they can take every day pieces of furniture, like today’s styles, and ad accents and things to give them this particular look,” said Vanstone. Art Deco is a design style and architectural style that started in the 1920s and 1930s and was really glamourized in the 1940s. The style is characterized by bold colours, and geometric shapes with elaborate ornamentation. “Well, here we are, 2013, everything old is new again. So, vintage is hot, hot, hot,” said Vanstone.
Vanstone is a seven-time designer of the PNE prize home. She is also a Georgie-award-winning designer who has appeared on numerous television programs and even hosted her own design talk show. People are invited to bring in their floor plans, fabric samples, their thoughts on a new kitchen or an idea scratched on a napkin and talk to design experts for free advice consultations all weekend long. The 800-square-foot showcase will feature a fully stocked design studio with hundreds of samples of texture, colour and finish for all interior design projects. Vanstone is also the weekend’s featured speaker. Whether you are a do-it-yourselfer or think you need someone to help with a project, Vanstone promises to offer plenty of ideas and inspiration.

Swim, active wear fashion show for ‘real women’
A
Swim and Active Wear Fashion Show for the ‘Real Woman’ will be the highlight of the Ridge Meadows Home Show on Saturday. Dubbed the ‘Because we’re not all 23 with perky you-know-whats and we’d rather spend money on red wine and chocolate than on liposuction’ Fashion Show , will feature local women as models. “Interestingly enough, in the swimwear industry, the most common sizes are 12 and 14, not size zero and size two, so that got us thinking that maybe it was time for a ‘real woman’ fashion show,” said Cassandre Winder, Ridge Meadows Home Show project coordinator. Winder admits the title of the show is long, but that it gets the point across. “Real women come in different ages, they’re different heights, different
weights and they’re all just perfect, just the way they are. Farewell fantasy woman,” said Winder. The 45-minute-long fashion show will take place at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday only, at the Outdoor Lifestyle and Leisure Show on the newly constructed stage located in the middle of the fairgrounds. Swim wear will be provided by MiCo’s Swim Wear. Fitness will be another component of the show, says Winder, but as a means of keeping healthy and feeling good. Fitness attire will be provided by Bikram Yoga Maple Ridge and Latin Flavours Fitness. Plus, the versatile Mai Tai wrap dresses will also be part of the show, with models demonstrating their unique wrap-around techniques that can be worn in endless different ways.

Driven by Nevada Bob’s Golf at Meadowtown Centre and Heather Hills Farm and Golf Course, the competition will use Flightscope – a 3-D club and ball tracking radar launch monitor that accurately measures ball flight. This specialized equipment monitors distance, and accuracy. After a few practice swings, enabling choice of the proper club, the contestant takes three shots, the best of which is entered into the competition. The ball must land in a 40-yard-wide grid (20 yards on either side of the centre line) to qualify. Accuracy counts, as well. Prizes include golf packages at Heather Hills.

C
anadian Olympic BMX coach Adam Muys of Cycling B.C. will be at the Ridge Meadows Home Show on May 3-5, at the Albion Fairgrounds, hosting learn-to-ride BMX clinics. A BMX pump track will be temporarily built for these clinics, allowing local residents of all ages and abilities to try out BMX. These 45-minute clinics are free and are open to anyone looking to try out BMX riding. Cycling B.C. will have all necessary equipment (helmets and bikes) on hand for you to pump the track and test out the skills course.

About Adam Muys Adam Muys started BMX racing at 10 years of age, and has since traveled the world and made many friends and gained many amazing experiences because of the sport. While he unofficially retired after the 2007 world championships in Victoria, he still occasionally races (mostly pro-ams at indoor events). He has since focused his efforts on coaching and most recently was able to go
to the 2012 Olympic Games in London as the national BMX coach.

ake your taste buds on a trip around the world. “Great food is a highlight of any event, and home show is no exception,” project coordinator Cass Winder said. The tastiest event of the year takes place alongside the home show, when international food vendors line up on the fairgrounds by Planet Ice to take your taste buds on a trip around the world. “We do a lot of searching to get the right mix of really great vendors to keep everyone happy.” In addition to traditional western fare – burgers piled high with fried onions and served alongside tasty home cut fries – people flock to the food event to sample the many international offerings. The event this year will feature Greek, Mexican and Thai food, as well as more traditional fare. New to the vendor line-up this year is Frozen Yogurt and, for the ultimate indulgence – Deep Fried Pies. All you have to do is follow your nose to find an endless array of tempting snacks and entrees as well Insomniac’s Coffee – a full-serve coffee house offering a wide variety of freshly brewed coffee beverages, chai tea, espresso, machiatos and even frozen coffee.

Try mini-bikes, ATVs

ids aged 6-12 will have an opportunity to get all revved up at this year’s Outdoor Lifestyle and Leisure Show at Ridge Meadows Home Show, May 3-5. Western Powersports of Langley is offering free rider training for kids on mini motorcycles and ATVs on a special course in the corral at the show. The event is part of Western Powersports’ Young Riders Academy and will feature an enclosed course lined with hay bales. The free 20-minute training session includes personalized, individual instruction by trained professionals on either a Yamaha TTR50E or TTR90 or a Raptor 90 ATV. The young students are first fitted with protective gear, provided by Western Powersports, then go through orientation on controls and functions. There are balance checks, a walk through on brake and throttle instruction, then the students take their instructor-aided first ride. Pass this part and the next step is an un-aided ride, with instructor monitoring. “The kids have a blast,” said Desi Evans of Western Powersports, “but this is about safety first. It’s imperative that kids learn from a trained professional.” Evans said at least one parent or legal guardian will be required to sign a waiver and must be present during the training. Students should wear a long-sleeved shirt, full length pants and socks with running shoes.
