The exterior brickwork lends a heritage feel, while the curved glass windows at the most prominent corner facing the intersection, add a contemporary flair. “It’s a great looking building,� said Diane Delves, president and CEO of Quantum Properties. “We get a lot of compliments on it.�

Quantum Properties oversaw the construction of the facility on a design-build contract for Dr. Brian Wiebe, with Points West Architecture handling the design.

The building’s heritage theme extends to its name. In the process of development, Delves and her Quantum colleagues discovered that the lot was once the site of the Pioneer Store, a downtown landmark many decades ago. “We came across some photos at The Reach Gallery,� explained Delves, who intends to purchase the rights to the vintage photos and

Ample parking – a rare commodity in the downtown core – is one of Pioneer Square’s most appealing features. In addition to a ground-level lot, there is a full underground parkade.

Construction is almost finished, and the next step is tenant improvements to the interior. In a couple months’ time, the building will be open for business.

“This is a new landmark for

Abbotsford,” Delves said. “It’s a high-profile corner which is only increasing in importance with the further development happening south on Gladys.”

Pioneer Square is just one of Quantum Properties’ current projects. Perhaps their most high-profile undertaking is the Mahogany at Mill Lake – a 26-storey mixed-use structure which will become Abbotsford’s tallest building. The facility

will feature residential units and office space, and Delves hopes to begin construction this summer. She estimates it will take 18 months to complete, and 40 per cent of the units have already been sold.

“It’s a vote of confidence that we have so many sales,” she said, noting that a pharmacy and a medical clinic are among the confirmed tenants for the commercial area.

“It’s the only commercial space that’s within walking distance of the new hospital.

We’ll have a lot of doctors and medical professionals interested in that space.”

Additionally, Brooklyn Condominiums – a project at Gladwin and Maclure roads that Quantum Properties took over after the initial development stalled – is the only new condo complex in Abbotsford, and 25 units are still available.

Quantum also hopes to begin construction this year on Abacus Uptown, a 90-unit condo facility at Essendene and Campbell avenues.

PIONEER SQUARE Good fit for Aldergrove Credit Union Aldergrove Credit Union’s sixth branch will anchor the new Pioneer Square development.

The communitybased credit union, which has proudly served Langley, Aldergrove, Gus Hartl, CEO Abbotsford Aldergrove Credit Union and Mission since 1954, was looking to expand its footprint in Abbotsford alongside existing branches in Mt. Lehman Centre to the west and Matsqui to the north.
