District cuts cash to LCIC Cost and sustainability cited

The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) is pulling out of its current model of economic development. On Thursday, at a full board meeting in Grand Forks, 12 out of 13 directors supported the East End Services (EES) decision to discontinue the current mode of economic development through the Lower Columbia Initiatives Corporation (LCIC). The main reason given is the cost of the service and the ability to sustain it. “We (EES) did agree to this, but on a trial basis,” said Ali Grieve, chair. If any of the partners wanted out, part of the obligation was to give notice by June 4, she said. Grieve explained that six of the seven partners did not wish to continue with the model (LCIC), and provided that notice. Mike Martin, Lower Columbia Community Development Team Society (LCCDTS) chair, said that in light of the cuts to funding, the LCIC board and staff remain focused on ensuring effective delivery of all planned activities for 2013. “We remain extremely disappointed in this unexpected termination of the Economic Services Agreement which funds the activities of the LCIC,” said Martin. “The LCCDTS remains fully committed to exploring all options to continue some form of regional economic development service going forward.” Grieve said that elected officials have an obligation to the taxpayers to contain spending with a constant review of what services the taxpayer needs and wants. “We have to ask ourselves and remind ourselves what are “core services”, and then focus the tax dollars there.” The EES will meet in May to discuss the possibilities of other models of economic development and which municipalities will continue to participate going forward.” Warfield Mayor Bert Crockett, also an EES director, said that many great causes approach See OTHER, Page 3
The city is alive this spring with crews digging, cutting, paving, and building as the City of Trail goes ahead with repairs and improvements. And work is slated to go on well into summer. The current list of projects, those underway, those completed, and those slated for beginning later into the summer includes: The River Wall restoration, ongoing sewer system improvements, broadband fibre optic installation, city hall signage upgrades, the Victoria Street Corridor gateway project, Gyro Park concession upgrade, Lower Sunningdale playground equipment upgrade, Parks and Rec master planning, and locker replacement at the Aquatic and Leisure Centre. Total projected cost for these projects is over $2.5 million. City crews and contractors are busy every spring but this year's work includes new projects not seen before. “We do have several projects that are See WORK, Page 3

Over 50 people gathered at the Worker’s Memorial on Victoria Street in Trail Sunday to remember those who have lost their lives or their livelihoods to workplace accidents and industrial diseases.
Gord Menelaws, Health and Safety chair for Local 480 Steelworkers, recited a grim list of statistics on workers who have paid with their lives and health from workplace hazards. One hundred and forty-nine workers died in B.C. last year, an
increase of seven over the previous year, and 1,000 were lost Canada-wide, an average of three deaths per day. “This can be a hard ceremony to speak at,” said Menelaws. “When you look out and see the people whose lives have been dir-
ectly affected. No one gets up for work in the morning expecting to die that day. You have to set aside a day to remember.” Since 1970 nine workers have been killed at Teck Metals Trail Operations, the last being CP Rail See WORKPLACE, Page 20

Council balks at prospect of tax increase By Timothy Schafer Rossland News
The suggestion of a two per cent taxation rise for 2013 brought City council to a halt last week. In their discussion on the preliminary budget and Five-year Financial Plan, some councillors were against the rise proposed by City staff and asked to meet further to whittle it down to zero. City chief financial officer Cecile Arnott told council in a special meeting Tuesday night in council chambers the proposed budget contained in the 20132017 Five -year Financial Plan was drafted—at council’s direction in December—to retain all services at current levels. In order to keep everything intact, she said, the current plan shows a water and sewer user fee revenue increase of two per cent. If that was instituted this year, that would work out to four per cent rise, or around $24 per family. The plan also suggested a taxation increase of two per cent, or around $35 per household. The suggested rise and the proposed budget did not sit well with councillor Cary Fisher. “Every government in the
world is tightening their budget right now. To increase our budget is irresponsible,” he said. “Irresponsible.” Fisher said there was already a 2.4 per cent tax increase coming from the RDKB that council had to lay on the backs of Rosslanders. Another increase from the City was too much and he suggested going back to a planning stage to rebuild the budget. He said there was no City policy for how it funded community groups, such as tying programming and community funding to an overall percentage of tax dollars collected. Fisher said the question of how much the City funds community groups should be put to the community for input. “A sober look needs to be done on all of this,” he said. “We can’t afford it right now. We really can’t afford it.” Others councillors agreed. But councillor Kathy Moore said she wanted to see how some of the proposed budget’s line items would look like in the budget before they began cutting. Council agreed to crack open the proposed budget Wednesday evening in council chambers.
Other development options will be reviewed FROM PAGE 1 the RDKB for funding, but the responsibility of the district to support core services, such as fire and sewer, is increasingly expensive. “The taxpayers only have so much money and we are working hard to keep core services in good order and lessen the impact on the taxpayers,” said Crockett. “Economic development is a discussion that will come forward again, and we will be looking at some different models.” The regional district, in particular the EES, committed to funding the LCCDTS $224,000 per year as flow-through funding for the LCIC, until the review, at which time the board could decide if it was desirable to continue with the partnership. At a mandated service review on April 16, the EES committee recommended to withdraw fund-
ing after its three-year contract ends in December. “Our contract is with the LCCDTS and because it is for economic development, it is on an annualized basis,” said John MacLean, chief administrative officer for the RDKB. “A work plan is presented which is what they (LCIC) will undertake for the following year for the money that we put forth to them,” he explained. “The participants (EES) felt that the current situation was not sustainable and they were worried about the cost.” MacLean said that although funding has been cut to the service that exists now, interest does remain amongst some of the participants to look into something different down the road. “But what that might be, nobody knows at this stage.”

Work will continue through summer FROM PAGE 1 unique to 2013, such as the fibre optic installation and the Victoria Street Corridor,” said Andrea Jolly, Communications and Events Coordinator for the City of Trail. “But I’m not certain if there is more work going on than other years.” According to Public Works manager, Larry Abenante, there was a great deal of work that went on last year but much of it was behind the scenes. “You’re probably looking at more visible projects, particularly downtown,” Abenante said. “Last year we had the

work on the Aquatic Centre HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) system, that was a horrendous job, but maybe people didn’t see it.” Abenante explained that there were also large sewer upgrade projects last year in Sunningdale as well as other, less obvious, projects that maybe didn’t have the visual impact as some of the work this year but that the City Works budget is much the same. “Looking at capital projects this year versus last year, basically the dollars are pretty well the same,” Abenante said. “Parks and Rec capital expendi-
tures this year are probably at about 50 per cent of last year. The funds are just re-directed to other areas of responsibility.” There is one area in city spending that has seen a significant increase over last year, according to Abenante. “Land purchases are way up this year as opposed to last year, particularly around the airport,” he said. “Last year it was fairly minimal.” So, as the summer heats up, citizens are requested to try to be patient and pay attention to flag persons on their way through town as the work will continue for some time.

Popoff sounds off over dismissal from Conservatives Will run as Independent in BoundarySimilkameen riding
THE CANADIAN PRESS VANCOUVER - A recently fired B.C. Conservative candidate has a beef with the party and has found a unique way to both announce he’s running as an Independent and strike back the party leader for firing him. B o u n d a r y Similkameen candidate Mischa Popoff
was dismissed as a Conservative candidate on Friday over what Leader John Cummins said were insensitive and disrespectful statements about women. In a YouTube video, Popoff appears standing in a fenced pasture with a young bull behind him and declares that he won’t be bullied by the Conservatives. Popoff says the leader of the B.C. Conservative Party kicked him out because he’s too conservative, and he clari-

fied the statements he made about the missing women’s inquiry. As the bull rubs its head along Popoff’s backside and licks his pants, Popoff says he said that the inquiry was a waste of time because no police officers were fired or even reprimanded. He says the Conservatives did better in BoundarySimilkameen than any other riding in the last election, and he questions Cummins’ leadership to just toss away a possible victory.
Cranbrook men found guilty of trying to kill drug rival THE CANADIAN PRESS KAMLOOPS, B.C. - A sentencing date is expected later this week for three Cranbrook men convicted of trying to rub out a drug rival. A lengthy and complicated trial wrapped up Sunday in B.C. Supreme Court
in Kamloops, with convictions against Lonnie Adams, Lorne Carry and Colin Correia. A jury agreed all three men are guilty of trying to kill Douglas Mahon in 2009, by hiring a hitman to do the contract.

Carry and Correia were also convicted of firearms offences and of conspiracy to kill Mahon, although Adams was cleared of the conspiracy charge. Key Crown witness and convicted criminal John Shank testified he was hired to carry out the hit, but instead co-operated with police to thwart any murder. During the trial, defence lawyers tried unsuccessfully to undermine Shank’s credibility, questioning his shady background and noting he was paid more than $100,000 for his information.

Search continues for missing teen
The Castlegar News The Kootenay Boundary Regional Detachment has issued an update regarding the investigation into the disappearance of 18-year-old Daniel Crossley. Police have interviewed a number of people in the Slocan community in an attempt to locate Crossley. It appears Crossley was last seen near the skateboard park between 7 p.m. - 7:45 p.m. on April 23 headed in the general direction of the “Rails to Trail” pathway. This area was searched the day after he disappeared with negative results. On Saturday, a group of people in the community conducted a door to door search which again did not yield positive results. In addition, a number of abandoned mines and cabins in the area have been searched. When Crossley disappeared he was reported to be wearing a purple shirt, black jeans, green jacket and black shoes.

NBA player reveals sexuality in article THE ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON - With the simplest of sentences, NBA veteran Jason Collins set aside years of worry and silence to become the first active player in one of four major U.S. professional sports leagues to come out as gay. In a first-person article posted Monday on Sports Illustrated’s website, Collins begins: “I’m a 34-year-old NBA centre. I’m black. And I’m gay.” Collins has played for six teams in 12 seasons, most recently as a reserve with the Washington Wizards after a midseason trade from the Boston Celtics. He is now a free agent and wants to keep playing in the NBA. “I didn’t set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport. But since I am, I’m happy to start the conversation. I wish I wasn’t the kid in the classroom raising his hand and saying, ‘I’m different,”’ Collins writes. “If I had my way, someone else would have already done this. Nobody has, which is why I’m raising my hand.” Saying he had “endured years of misery and gone to enormous lengths to live a lie,” Collins immediately drew support for his announcement from the White House, former President Bill Clinton, the NBA, current and former teammates, and athletes in other sports. Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant tweeted that he was proud of Collins, writing: “Don’t suffocate who u r because of the ignorance of others,” followed by the words “courage” and “support.” “We’ve got to get rid of the shame. That’s the main thing. And Jason’s going to help that. He’s going to help give people courage to come out,” said Billie Jean King, a member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame who confirmed she was gay after being outed in the early 1980s. “I guarantee you he’s going to feel much lighter, much freer. The truth does set you free, there’s no question. It doesn’t mean it’s easy. But it sets you free,” King said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. The Wizards, whose season ended April 17, issued a statement from President Ernie Grunfeld: “We are extremely proud of Jason and support his decision to live his life proudly and openly. He has been a leader on and off the court and an outstanding teammate throughout his NBA career. Those qualities will continue to serve him both as a player and as a positive role model for others of all sexual orientation.” Collins’ coach with the Celtics, Doc Rivers, drew a comparison between Monday’s announcement and Jackie Robinson’s role when he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947 as the first black player in Major League Baseball. “I am extremely happy and proud of Jason Collins. He’s a pro’s pro. He is the consummate professional and he is one of my favourite ‘team’ players I have ever coached,” Rivers said. “If you have learned anything from Jackie Robinson, it is that teammates are always the first to accept. It will be society who has to learn tolerance.” Collins says he quietly made a statement for gay rights even while keeping his sexual orientation a secret. He wore No. 98 with the Celtics and Wizards - 1998 was year that Matthew Shepard, a gay college student in Wyoming, was killed, and the Trevor Project, a suicide prevention organization, was founded.

The NDP plan includes borrowing and spending
N
DP leader Adrian Dix has finally rolled out his “fully costed” election platform. Major policy announcements had been released previously, but there was plenty more spending added to the total. The NDP’s health care plan is surprisingly modest – more money for home support, residential senior care, mental health and addiction services and a rural acute care initiative totaling $159 million over three years. As health critic Mike Farnworth points out, the residential care increase will allow seniors two baths a week instead of one. Full marks to the NDP for this part of the platform. Increases to Community Living B.C., children and families programs and aboriginal friendship centres are also commendable. Other NDP proposals don’t inspire as much
confidence. Raise welfare rates $20 a month and index them to inflation. Index the minimum wage to inflation too, at a time when inflation can only rise. Set up a new child bonus program to send $70 per month for each child with family income under $25,000. Lesser payments would go to families with income up to $66,000. This ’70s-style family allowance scheme is based on a “child poverty” claim that misrepresents federal statistics of relative income distribution. The program is optimistically budgeted at $210 million a year. Dix insists it isn’t a “big new social program,” which makes me wonder what would qualify. It would be partly funded by cancelling a B.C. Liberal plan to establish education savings accounts for kids born after 2006. Out with self-reliance, in with the
TOM

nanny state. Another $100 million is added to hire more teachers, to address the teachers’ union’s oftenrepeated but false claim of “a decade of cuts” in education. Another $100 million goes to student grants, much of it further subsidizing the oversupply of English, education, sociology, women’s studies, journalism and other university grads who eventually discover there is little demand for their degrees. As with welfare, increasing support for bad choices can only yield more bad
choices. On a related note, the NDP will revive a ministry of women’s equality, “to promote social and economic equality to all government programs....” As with female candidate quotas, the NDP keeps the flame of ’70s socialist feminism alive. The party totals up its new program spending to $988 million over three years. That’s exactly the amount Dix estimates will be raised by tax hikes on corporate income, bank capital, personal income over $150,000, carbon tax on oil and gas drilling, and cancelling the B.C. Liberals’ RESP and child tax credit plans. As for deficits, the NDP claims that the B.C. Liberal budget hides a deficit of $800 million this year and similar deficits in the next two years. The B.C. Liberals point to an impressive string of “net zero” wage settlements with public sector unions, the core of their
spending control record. Would the NDP continue to hold the line on public service wages, as the B.C. Liberals have done? Dix’s NDP caucus and staff is stocked with former government union officials. Party president Moe Sihota is essentially a direct employee of the same unions. The B.C. Federation of Labour has shaped the NDP’s Labour Code changes, which we won’t see until after the May 14 vote. And how much money does the “fully costed” NDP plan set aside to pay wage increases for its government union brothers and sisters? Zero. Since this is the party that appears to be cruising to victory in the May 14 election, I’ll look at what’s not in their platform and other issues next week. Stones play in club THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES - For one night only, the Rolling Stones were an up-and-coming band again. The legendary group rocked a small club in Los Angeles on Saturday night for a miniscule crowd compared to the thousands set to see them launch their “50 and Counting” anniversary tour a week later on May 3 at the Staples Center. Tickets to the Echoplex concert were sold earlier in the day for $20 each - a fraction of what tickets to the tour cost.

Letters & Opinion Letters to the editor
Questioning concerns on climate change For more than 20 years, the climate alarmists have been telling us that we are within a few years of reaching the tipping point for runaway warming. In spite of the fact that global warming stopped more than 15 years ago, Gwynne Dyer continues to promote the false alarmist narrative (“A third option when the ‘carbon bubble’ bursts,” Trail Times, 24 April 2013). A grasp of the following facts will allow anyone to judge for themselves the validity of global-warming alarmism: - Carbon dioxide (“CO2”) is not a pollutant as it is a vital plant food; - The atmosphere is CO2 impoverished as a result of natural sequestration (e.g. limestone formation); - The consumption of all known hydrocarbon-fuel deposits (coal, oil, & gas) will replace only a small fraction of the sequestered CO2; - The global-warming
alarmist message is based solely upon far-from-perfect climate models; Anecdotal evidence allegedly in support of the alarmist message (e.g. arctic sea ice) is well within natural variability: http://www. ijis.iarc.uaf.edu/seaice/extent/ AMSRE_Sea_Ice_Extent_L. png - The Antarctic, with 90 per cent of the planet’s ice, reached a new record sea ice extent last October 2012; http://earthobservatory.nasa. gov/IOTD/view.php?id=79369 - The frequency of hurricanes and strong tornadoes are at or near their lowest ebb in decades; - The rate of sea level rise remains unchanged from what it was prior to significant CO2 emissions; - Concurrent with the sun entering another quiet phase, the planet is now experiencing a naturally-occurring cooling cycle; and
- The alarmist narrative is without scientific merit. For example, it violates the 2nd law of thermodynamics. Clearly, the CO2-induced, global-warming narrative must be rejected! Are you surprised that the alarmists are now referring to “global warming” as “climate change”? It should be noted that climate has been changing since the beginning of time. Like the knights of old who promised to protect their serfs from firebreathing dragons, our politicians are promising to save us from a “fire-breathing planet” with their carbon taxes. Will any politician have the the courage to denounce the B.C. carbon tax and the propaganda generated by the beneficiaries of the CO2-induced, global-warming narrative, a modern version of medieval witchcraft? Thorpe Watson, PhD Warfield
Shop with a moral conscience An editorial from the Hamilton Spectator We are appalled by the deaths of hundreds of workers in the collapse of a Bangladesh garment building. For most Canadians, the more we read about the tragedy, the angrier we get. The eight-storey factory building collapsed last Wednesday, killing more than 370 people and injuring hundreds. Earlier in the week, cracks in the building led police to order an evacuation, but the garment factories continued to operate. Numerous construction regulations had been violated. The owner of the building had permission to build a five-storey building; three extra stories were added illegally. A large part of our North American anger has been expressed in the consumer backlash that followed the building’s collapse. In Canada, much of the criticism has fallen on the Joe Fresh brand, particularly after the circulation of a photograph of a garment in the factory rubble that clearly has a Joe Fresh label.
Boycott campaigns - against not only Joe Fresh, but major U.S. brands as well - are flourishing on social media. But will all this angry talk lead to lost business for these brands? Some commentators suggest we should not be surprised at the toll of death and injury. Garment factories flourish in Bangladesh, which has more than 4,000 factories. The factory building’s collapse last week is by no means the first, although it is the worst disaster in Bangladesh’s garment industry. A factory fire killed 112 garment workers in November; since then, there have been more than 40 so-called “fire incidents” in Bangladesh factories. The National Garment Workers Federation in Bangladesh says hundreds of workers have died in factory accidents over the past decade - in a country where the minimum wage is equivalent to about $38 a month. Most of the clothing we buy and wear in North America and Europe is made in developing countries, where wages
are low and working conditions are substandard according to accepted practices in developed nations. Offshore manufacturing has flourished to keep consumer prices low. That isn’t likely to happen unless the market - that’s us, as consumers - demands it. So in apportioning blame, we must not leave ourselves out of the equation. North American companies that depend on offshore manufacturing know the working conditions are not good and the wages should be higher. And many companies try to exert influence to improve conditions for offshore workers. Whether that push comes from altruism or smart PR is, in some ways, irrelevant. It’s the outcomes that should count. It will be interesting to see how many North Americans put their money where their mouths are in the aftermath of the Bangladesh collapse. Many of us try, as much as budgets allow, to shop with moral conscience. But where will most of us draw the line?

Be realistic about the condition of the roads - How bad are the frost heaves and is there a lot of sand and salt still on the roads? Taking a corner that still has a lot of sand on the road can end up in a really bad crash when the back tire loses contact with the road.

Bull-a-rama delivers another wild ride By Jim Bailey
Times Sports Editor
There were plenty of spills and thrills at the 12th annual Kootenay Chrysler Bull-a-Rama at the Cominco Arena Saturday as about 1,200 bull-riding fans watched 30 riders buck and battle their respective Brahmas through the long go. Organizers orchestrated another seamless performance from the exciting riders and bulls, to the lively banter of announcers Brett Gardiner and Brent Bevins, the comical antics of rodeo performer “Slick” Josh Shepherd, and the 16 tough, young mutton busters. “I think the crowd was real energetic, and it looks like the same type of crowd we’ve been used to, I would love to see more people in the building but I understand, a dollar only goes so far,” said organizer Guy Thompson. “But we’ve got some of the top riders in Canada and some of the top bulls here and you’ve got to go a long way to see bull riding like you saw here in Trail.” The bull riders didn’t disappoint with 10 holding on for the full eight seconds to make it to the short go. Headlining the event were veteran riders like Steven Turner, Tyler Thomson, and Devon Mezei all vying for the coveted golden spurs, but it was a 20-year-old rookie, Corey Waterson from Australia, that would prevail on this day. Waterson showed he was no slouch by winning the long go with an 85.5 on Franklin Rodeo’s Red Bull, and he would need to post a similar score in the short go to ensure the win. Mezei stumbled in the short go, while Thomson had a wild ride, scoring an 86.5 putting him momentarily in the lead. However, Turner was determined to improve on his runner-up finish in last year’s event, as he hung on for the

Clockwise from top: Organizer Guy Thompson awards the golden spurs to Kootenay Chrsyler Bull-a-Rama champion bull-rider Corey Waterson, who hung on for eight in his long go winning ride aboard Red Bull. The bulls were ornery but the rodeo clowns kept the riders safe, while Jorja Papilion, Olivia Buckley, and Hunter Weishaupt showed off their best cowgirl duds, and mutton busters like Chesney Flux were crowd favourites. It all came down to the last rider and the final bull. The Australian just landed in Canada a month ago and now rides out of Strathmore. He was teamed up with Franklin Brahma Team Paige, and as it bucked and whirled, Waterson refused to be ejected, maintaining his unwavering focus until the
eight second buzzer sounded and the rider flew dramatically into the air, crashing into the dirt, while posting an impressive 85.5 and a combined 171 to
win the Bull-a-Rama championship. “I’m stoked, I mean I haven’t been riding too good since I got here, and tonight I turned it around, so I’m stoked,”
said Waterson after accepting the spurs from Thompson a former Trail resident. It was the rookie bull rider’s first win on the Canadian Bull

go and overall champion, while Turner made out okay as well pocketing 4,679.60 for
winning the short go and coming in second overall. Thomson picked up third-place prize with just over $2,500 in earnings. It was the second year in a row that the Cochrane rider Turner finished runner-up, losing last year to his older brother Jody. “He made a good ride, I mean he deserved to win,” said Turner. “My bull just wasn’t as strong as his on the first one or second one so he came out really good.” It was a wild and entertaining ride for Bull-a-Rama goers, but as far as returning next year, Thompson remains predictably noncommittal. “I don’t want to go there yet,” he said with a smile.

Players optimistic despite playoff history THE CANADIAN PRESS VANCOUVER The Vancouver Canucks are seeking an answer to a critical question - other than goaltender Cory Schneider’s health - as they attempt to return to the Stanley Cup finals. Which version of the team will show up? The Canucks hope it will be the squad that dominated the NHL-leading Chicago Blackhawks recently and not the one that often lurched through a lockout-shortened, 48-game regular season. “If we can keep building on (the win over Chicago), we shouldn’t be afraid of any team,” said captain Henrik Sedin, whose club will face the San Jose Sharks in the opening round, starting Wednesday in Vancouver. The Canucks won their fifthstraight Northwest Division

games of the 2011-12 regular season and first two games of the playoffs with a concussion, is healthy. Meanwhile, other key players have recovered from recent ailments, and the club has shown an ability to overcome deficits recently in games that mattered most. Never mind that Vancouver did not come close to claiming the Presidents’ Trophy again. It did not mean much to the players or their title hopes. “I don’t think we put too much into that in the past, either,” said Henrik Sedin. “The first year we won, it was a big thing for us and the franchise. The second year, we weren’t aiming for it. It’s just happened that we played well. I think it says well about your team if you’re able to win it. But going into the playoffs, I don’t think it matters.”

title with a 26-15-7 record, securing the third seed in the Western Conference and homeice advantage in at least the first round of the post-season. But it remains to be seen whether they can still strike fear in opponents like they did en route to claiming a pair of Presidents’ Trophy titles in the past two seasons and a berth in the 2010-11 Stanley Cup final. A year ago, the Canucks headed into the playoffs riding an 8-1-1 record in their last 10 regular-season games but lost to eventual champion Los Angeles in the first round. By comparison, they closed out the 2013 campaign with a 5-4-1 mark. Despite their average record down the stretch, Sedin believes the Canucks actually have more momentum this year. As of Monday, four houseguests were in the running for the $100,000 prize: Edmonton wild child Talla Rejaei, Toronto socialite Gary Levy, East Coast dairy farmer Emmett Blois and Nova Scotia teacher Jillian MacLaughlin. “It’s so much harder than it looks,” says host Arisa Cox. Cox took a look back at the scheming so far: The Rise of Jemmett The “showmance” that united Jillian and Emmett was instantaneous and powerful. “All the other ‘showmances’ - Tom (Plant) and Liza (Stinton), Alec (Beall) and Topaz (Brady) - were both sent home on double evictions on the same day but Jemmett has managed to eke out victory after victory after victory and they find themselves in the final four.” Tom’s Downfall The beefy Tom seemed to be on a solid trajectory to the finals thanks to a secret deal with Emmett, Alec and Peter ... until he pulled an embarrassing prank on a naked Alec in front of all those cameras. Suddenly seen as a bully, the house turned on Tom and he was evicted. “And the quatro alliance - one of the ones that people thought was one of the stronger alliances - was dead in the water.” The Betrayal of Topaz Topaz’s reign as Head of Household was remarkably brief thanks to a twist that demanded she nominate two houseguests for eviction immediately after taking power. She chose Andrew Monaghan and A.J. Burman, making it clear Andrew was her target. Nevertheless, her supposed allies Peter and Alec voted to keep Andrew, who felt no allegiance in subsequent weeks when he booted Alec, Topaz and then Peter from the house. Gary’s Nine Lives Canada voted to send Gary back into the house last week and he wasted no time in winning a Power of Veto to avoid elimination by the surprised houseguests. Since then he’s approached Jillian and Emmett separately in a bid to make a final-two deal, arguing his charmed run burned bridges with the jury and virtually assures his coconspirator the win. “But you never know what could happen,” says Cox.

more. He’s convinced no one can help him. He thinks antidepressants would make him feel worse. When I suggest that a better sleep schedule, healthier eating habits and more exercise could help, he says he doesn’t care enough to try. How do I help him find the motivation to get the help he needs? I love him and am terrified that he’s just given up on life. -- Worried in the Mountains Dear Worried: Jarrod is depressed, but his unwillingness to get help prevents him from getting better and has become a burden on you. First, please understand that
and then immediately resumes his serenade. I know if I were to ask him to stop, it would be the beginning of World War III. He has a bad temper and a short fuse. I get along with him fine otherwise, but I find this incredibly rude and increasingly unbearable. I try to avoid driving them, but our proximity and common gatherings make it hard. My wife seems oblivious. She has been subjected to this all her life. No one has ever had the gumption to poke this wasp nest with a stick. What can I do? -- Want Duct Tape Dear Want: You could try singing along at the top of your lungs. But really, we don’t think Dad does this deliberately to annoy you. It sounds like an ingrained habit. Either tolerate it, drive separate cars or ask your wife to drive while you listen to something else through a set of
headphones. Dear Annie: If “Technically Impaired in New York” wishes to learn how to text, great, but she shouldn’t feel obligated to invest in this extra feature or spend time learning how to do it. My extremely techie
children took the time to write old-fashioned postcards and handwritten letters to their grandmother, who greatly appreciated their consideration. I taught them that they should be deferring to her needs rather than the other way around.
This important relationship of respect and special care has been remembered with great fondness since she passed away in 2011. -- Soon-to-Be Grandmother Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy

you are not responsible for his mental health, and you cannot help him without his cooperation. Tell him that one little step could make all the difference, and suggest he speak to a counselor at the college. Offer to go with him. You can notify the counseling office about Jarrod’s depression and ask them to check on him. We also recommend The Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (dbsalliance. org). Dear Annie: My wife and I frequently drive her 80-something parents around. Here is the problem: From the time my father-in-law gets in the car until we reach our destination, he sings, whistles and hums. This grates on me like fingernails on a blackboard. I have tried turning up the radio, but he just increases his volume. I attempt conversation, but he only stops singing long enough to answer my question

Dear Annie: My boyfriend, “Jarrod,” has always been very anxious about social situations and has a hard time making friends. Since graduating from high school, he’s lost touch with the few people he considered friends and has become very isolated. Together with the stress of passing his college courses, he has spiraled into a serious depression. Jarrod constantly laments that he has no friends and that his family only wants him to get a job and move out. (They recently staged an intervention and referred to him as a “failure to launch.”) He thinks no one besides me would care if anything happened to him. He often states that he wishes everything would just end. I want Jarrod to see a doctor and get help, but he says the idea of talking to someone about his problems scares him and stresses him out even

YourByhoroscope Francis Drake For Tuesday, April 30, 2013 ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might be unhappy about something at work or your attempt to use your money or something you own. You are blocked. Just accept this gracefully and stay calm. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s easy to be irritated today, especially with partners and close friends. The maddening part of it is you feel like you can’t say anything. You’re muzzled. Patience. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You might be doing a slow boil about something because someone older or in a position of authority is standing in your way. Worse yet, you know you can’t speak out. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) In group situations, you might have a standoff with

someone older or more experienced who is critical of you. Naturally, this stings, especially if you cannot rebut. LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) Relations with parents, bosses, teachers and authority figures are strained today. Just accept this, and don’t make a big deal about anything. (You have no choice.) VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) Travel plans are changed or canceled today. You might encounter difficulties with higher education as well. Accept the fact that certain doors are closed to you for today. LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) Things will be denied to you today, perhaps even your own money or assets. It’s as if something or someone is standing in your way. Just accept this for now. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) Be patient with partners and close friends today even
though you want to complain about something. You know you can’t speak up, so resign yourself to the situation. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) Things are difficult at work today. People are not cooperative; furthermore, bosses are contrary. Just tough this one out. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) This is a tough day for
romance, sports events and fun, social occasions because others are withdrawn and standoffish, making it difficult to be warm and friendly. Instead, choose to work hard today. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) Be patient with family members and parents today because a lot of people are at each other’s throats today. It’s so easy to be irritated and annoyed. Patience is your
only recourse. PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) This might be a mildly accident-prone day for you because you’re distracted and possibly angry. Instead, use this energy to focus on specific, detailed work. YOU BORN TODAY You do things professionally and correctly. Because of this, you have a natural air of authority. You admire charm and cleverness and others.
