CSS students hold candidates to task

AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter Delivering their message to their biggest crowd yet, Cariboo North candidates fielded questions from Correlieu secondary students ranging from differences in platforms, to agriculture, to seniors issues and education.

Each hopeful began with a five-minute introduction, beginning with NDP candidate Duncan Barnett.

“I’m applying for a job,” Barnett said.

“And I want that job. I think it’s a time for change – a change for the better.”

Barnett also highlighted, what he said, were “two very different philosophies” between his party and that of the Liberals.

“They believe in small government and big business,” he said.

“We believe people are our biggest resource.”

Liberal nominee Coralee Oakes took the mic next, kicking off with her first experience in politics.

“Someone asked me ‘what do you think?’” she said.

“They invited me to have a voice. My voice mattered.”

Independent candidate Bob Simpson told the young crowd he first got involved in politics in 2004 because he felt the province was living “unsustainably.”

“We have a government favouring the top two per cent instead of everyone else,” he said.

“We’re living beyond our means. But we don’t have to.

We can solve these issues.”

Simpson’s solution lies with dealing with issues of governance decisions and regulation process.

First question, directed to Barnett: “Your leader announced $24 million for the agriculture industry. What do you plan on

doing with that money for our area?”

Barnett highlighted his strong background in agriculture and clarified the funding is $8 million a year over three years. He also pointed to his party’s platform on agriculture, including extension services, the implementation of locally grown food in hospitals (30 per cent) and market creation.

Next was a question for all three candidates: “In the next 20 to 30 years we’re going to see an increase in old people.

How do you plan to take care of these people with limited resources?”

Simpson: “We have to try to keep seniors in their homes for as long as possible,” he said, noting a need to streamline services and delivery.

“We need to let seniors determine the best use of those services.”

Simpson also noted a need for affordable housing and assisted living.

Oakes: “We need to control the debt for our next generation,” she said.

“We cannot afford everything, that is a reality.”

“How can you help volunteer with our seniors,” she said, highlighting a program Adopt-AGrandparent.

“It’s not just how government can fix this, it’s how society can help support.”

Barnett: “We need to make sure people can take care of themselves for as along as possible,” he said, pointing to the agriculture comment of healthy eating.

Barnett also spoke to the need of affordable housing and home support.

“But not just as volunteers,” he said.

“We need trained, paid professionals.”

Next, Oakes was asked what changes she would like to make in the North.

The Liberal candidate spoke to the Trades and Technology Centre and her involvement in securing funding.

She also spoke to her intensive involvement in call business and its role in the community and the commitment to buy local campaigns.

“I am passionate about entrepreneurship,” she said.

“I support young people getting involved in small business; it’s the heart of a community.”

Barnett was then asked where his party was securing funding from for their platform projects.

“The mine comes from taxes, fees and royalties from natural resources,” he explained.

“We will increases taxes on corporations from 10 per cent to 12 per cent, that will generate millions.”

Barnett also spoke to a tax increase on high income owners, “the two per cent” and a corporate capital tax.

The next question, directed to all three: If elected what are your primary concerns and how would you address them?

“Our priorities are different than that of the liberals,” Barnett said.

“Our priorities are people, not big business.”

Barnett spoke to education, healthcare, the economy, the need for a bypass, the Multi-Centre and the natural resource sector.

“The question is,” Oakes said.

“Is how do we diversify our economy? We need to be attracting investment. We are rich in natural resources. We need to build confidence in our local economy and be champions for our area.”

Simpson highlighted two priorities: moving forestry into the 21st Century, with the implementation of bio-digesting and affordability.

“It needs to be addressed,” he said.

“Affordability for young people, young families.”

Randolph Bruce Legacy will aid Local Hospital “G.R. Baker Memorial Hospital here, along with 100 other non-profit hospitals throughout B.C. will benefit to the extent of $12,850 from the late Hon. Randolph Bruce, one-time Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia who died on February 21, 1942.

The money comes from a trust fund to Mrs. Bruce which carried the provision that it was to be distributed among all non-profit B.C. hospitals upon her death. Mrs. Bruce died on April 27, 1962, and on the final settlement of the estate, the sum of $1,205,043 was available for distribution on an equal share basis among the eligible hospitals. Hospital authorities here have been informed that the Quesnel share will be paid about mid May. “ This Column is to highlight our 50th Anniversary

Unfortunately, history has shown that neither the public nor the party candidates know what the party leaders’real agendas are for BC. Those agendas won’t be revealed until after the election when we get the new government’s first budget in the fall.

In 1996, NDP candidates ran on a platform that claimed the government’s books were balanced. After that election, newly elected NDP MLAs found out the books had been cooked, and they had to live through the embarrassment of the “fudge-it budget” scandal. Adrian Dix was Premier Glen Clark’s Chief of Staff at the time.

In 2001, Liberal candidates promoted a platform that explicitly stated BC Rail would not be sold. After that election, Liberal MLAs were forced to vote in favour of selling BC Rail, a deal that’s still under investigation to this day.

In 2009, Liberal candidates ran on a platform that claimed HST was not on the radar and that the deficit would be less than $500 million.

After the election, Liberal MLAs were compelled to vote in favour of a tax British Columbians clearly opposed and to vote for a budget that projected a deficit of $2.8 billion.

The sad reality is that party platforms are merely promises designed to keep a party’s base happy while attracting people who may give the party the benefit of the doubt if it doesn’t say anything outrageous during the election.

Party platforms reflect what internal polls and focus groups say will get them the most votes.

They aren’t founded on a set of clearly articulated principles, nor are they based on deep policy work. One of my primary disagreements with the NDP was that caucus was not allowed to undertake detailed policy work.

As an Independent I guarantee you I won’t reverse any stands I take during this election (detailed position papers are available on my website and in my offices), and I won’t be forced to re-write history when the new Premier inevitably changes his or her mind about any given issue.

I will publicly hold the new government to account to their promises and continue to fight for sound public policy that benefits all British Columbians.

New Focus Society has been granted a provincial contract through the Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training for the Welcoming Communities Action Plan.

Regional District enters pilot

The CRD has volunteered to be part of a two-year pilot project where the CRD board would have the authority to adopt specific land use bylaws without requiring ministerial approval.

Up until April 1, 2013 the board could only advance specific land use bylaws to third reading and then seek the approval of the Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development before bylaw adoption.

Due to the CRD’s practises for First Nations engagement and responding to issues raised by government agencies in land use referrals, the CRD was approved to be part of this pilot, along with 11 (out

of 27) other regional districts in BC. This means that the board, as of April 1, 2013 can reduce the time required for many land use applications by not requiring ministerial approval- time savings can be a minimum of one month.

Arts and culture The Cariboo Regional District Board of Directors received and endorsed the 2013 CCAC project grants recommendations.

The CRD has a five-year service agreement with the CCAC society to deliver the annual

project grant program.

Project grants of between $300 and $2,000 are available for projects which are new or build creatively on previous work and are likely to increase participation in arts and culture within the Central Cariboo region (Williams Lake and/or CRD Areas D, E, and F).

This year’s grant program will support a variety of diverse projects throughout the service area. More information can be found at centralcaribooarts. com

Fuel management The CRD will be submitting an application to the UBCM Strategic Wildfire Prevention

Initiative to undertake fuel reduction in approximately 10 hectares in the 108 Greenbelt area.

The funds would also be used to develop a prescription for fuel treatment along the Walker Valley.

Heritage register Regional District Board of Directors approved the addition of the Sugar Cane Church on the CRD’s Heritage Register.

Constructed in 1895, the Sugar Cane Church is valued as the last example of Cariboo-style Native village church architecture from this era.

The heritage value of the Sugar Cane Church is derived from its continuous use as a church and

community centre for the Williams Lake Indian Band since its construction.

It is also valued for its location in the original village square and as a focal point for community cultural and spiritual gatherings.

The CRD will notify the Minister responsible for Heritage Conservation so that the property can be added to the provincial heritage registry.

Declarations May 19-25, 2013 – Local Government Awareness Week May 19-25, 2013 – National Public Awareness Week

Baptiste and Laporte pack it in Council said goodbye to two of their long-term employees, Andre Laporte and Dennis Baptiste.

Both joined council last night to receive their formal send off into retirement.

Laporte started with the City of Quesnel in July of 1975 as a Labourer.

His assignments for the city included positions as a Truck Driver II and Equipment Operator 1 (for 20 years) then on to the position of Sub-Foreman/ Equipment Operator in 2005.

He is officially retiring from that position on April 30, 2013.

Laporte has been a valued employee for almost four decades and he will be missed by staff and coworkers.

Baptiste began with the city in March of 1974.

He was brought in to help clean up the city and was assigned the job of sweeping

sidewalks and picking up litter.

His duties expanded over the years to include painting, shovelling snow and most importantly being an ambassador

for the City of Quesnel.

Baptiste knows most of the people in the community and has been known for his outstanding memory.

He has been a valued

employee with the city for almost four decades and will be missed not only by staff and coworkers but the entire community.

Council thanked

both for their service to the city and wished them all the best in their retirement.

It is with heartfelt sadness that the family of Robert Bartsch announce his passing with his family by his side on April 11, 2013 at G.R. Baker Memorial Hospital. Robert fought a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Survived by his wife of 30 years Tracy, son Matthew, parents Bill and Ann, brother Gary (Brenda), sisters Connie (Larry), Faye (D.J.) and nieces and nephews. Protect Yourself and Your Family With Critical Illness Insurance

A major illness can be a huge emotional burden for you and your family. Don’t let it become a financial burden, too. Protect yourself against the potentially high costs of a serious illness with critical illness insurance.

Without this insurance, the odds are against you. Statistics show that at some point in their lives, most Canadians will face a life-threatening illness. If you’re the major income earner in your family, that’s bad financial news. In fact, a major illness can place a greater burden on your family’s finances than your death.

Critical illness insurance provides a one-time tax-free lump sum payment if you are diagnosed with an illness covered by the policy. There are no restrictions on what you can do with the money, so it can be used to cover health care costs, personal care services, lost income while you’re unable to work or for any other purpose.

Of course, you may have other types of insurance to help with the costs of an illness. Many Canadians have disability insurance policies, for example.

But while disability and critical illness insurance complement each other, your disability policy won’t pay benefits if you are still able to work.

Even if your illness prevents you from working, you might have to wait a number of weeks for your benefits to kick in. And they may be limited.

Critical illness insurance offers coverage whether you’re able to work during or after your serious illness. Policies vary, but coverage typically includes cancer, heart attack, stroke, multiple sclerosis, kidney failure, blindness, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and other serious life-altering illnesses.

These plans are offered by life insurance companies, and are generally available to those up to age 65 and in good health. You may be able to renew your policy until age 75 or for your lifetime. The full benefit is available even if you recover from the illness. But you must usually live for at least 30 days after an illness is diagnosed before benefits are received.

When buying critical illness insurance, shop carefully. Coverage, exclusions, benefits and prices can vary. Be sure that you aren’t excluded from coverage because of age or health-particularly by a previous illness.

A new generation of voter engagement

“In the next 20 to 30 years there’s going to be an increase in old people. How do you plan on caring for these people with limited resources?”

J

ust one question of more than a dozen asked by Correlieu Secondary students during the all-candidates debate Tuesday morning.

Amazing.

It was their largest, youngest crowd yet. Those students packed the gym.

Sure some of them must have been forced in attendance – but the majority?

They were engaged.

I’ve seen less enthusiasm from many an “adult” on issues such as education, policy reform, agriculture, sustainability, natural resources, the need for diversification, differences in party platforms, the advantages and disadvantages of being an Independent MLA, top priorities for the region, healthcare, taxation, funding, Enbridge, child poverty issues, infrastructure deficits... good grief, if even a quarter of my generation could articulate half of those issues, our system would be far less broken.

Congratulations to all of those students asking questions, discussing the issues and ensuring their voices are heard.

Hats off to the teachers instilling a sense of relevance and passion for policy and politics.

These young adults are our future, the decisions that are being made today are of huge importance to them and to see that translated into action right before your eyes is nothing short of inspiring.

The future lies with them and from the looks of it Tuesday, the future is bright.

No need to be picture perfect L

ooking through old photos from when my kids were young, I’m hard-pressed to find very many of myself in there.

The reason for this is because I was too busy being the photographer and I would forget to hand the camera over to someone else.

The other reason is that I typically didn’t feel presentable and preferred being behind the lens rather than in front of it.

On the rare occasion that I thought I looked good enough and I actually remembered to ask, my husband would snap a few.

Unfortunately, I didn’t keep many of the pictures he took because I’d invariably find fault with my appearance and throw them out.

Good grief. I kick myself for that now. It shouldn’t have mattered how I looked.

Photographs of me, especially with my children, are important.

But it’s our own fault.

Like my grandmothers, we were too self-conscious to pose and we probably didn’t want to waste money getting photos developed that would just wind up in the garbage.

When I first met my husband, he’d attempt to take my picture, but he was rarely successful.

Trying to get snapshots of someone who is uncooperative and camerashy gets tiresome.

Thank goodness for my mother-in-law who obviously didn’t care and knew better.

Perusing her photo albums is an entirely different experience because there aren’t just prints of my

I still feel like I should be doing way more of it though.

My brother has always snapped a ton of his family, and I’ve noticed my dad doing the same as he’s become more sentimental. I need to follow their lead.

In this digital age we can take an unlimited number of pictures and not worry about getting rolls of photos developed and ending up with a bunch we don’t want.

Now, when we have images printed, we can hand-pick exactly what we want and save or trash the rest. There’s no such thing as taking too many pictures anymore.

There also should be no such thing as waiting to look perfect. That kind of attitude might work in the modeling world, but in the real world where memories matter, it doesn’t make sense.

husband and our kids, there are actually some of me in there too.

“Is that you?” my nineyear-old daughter asked, pointing to an image of me from 19 years earlier when I first started dating their daddy.

“You look so young, Mama.”

I did look young. Young and thin.

Ironically I didn’t want to get my picture taken back then because I felt too plump. What was I thinking?

It’s obvious looking through her album that my size fluctuated dramatically over time, particularly during the first few years after my kids were born and I wasn’t quick to lose the extra baby weight.

But seeing photos of me with my children at various stages of their lives, no matter how I looked, isn’t just a treat for them, it’s a treat for me as well.

Since turning 40 I haven’t objected to getting my picture taken like I used to. It’s not that I think I’ve

Anyone, including the Parti Quebecois or the native groups who claim they are a nation separate from Canada, should be (I have to say it) drummed out of authority as dissenters.

Heinzelman declared arts champion ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter Bernice Heinzelman is now a B.C. Arts Champion as selected by the Assembly of B.C. Arts Councils.

She, along with several others, were nominated earlier this year for their considerable contributions to arts and culture in B.C. Nomination categories were artist, administrator and youth and sought to recognize and award these champions for their dedication and work towards arts and culture.

Piper’s Call, a fictional novel driven by faith ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter Beverly Fox has released her first fictional novel called Piper’s Call. The book chronicles the journey of one woman through the devastation of losing her husband in a hunting accident to a closer relationship with her God and her growth as a person.

Although writing was never a passion for Fox, she always enjoyed reading and literature. As an adult she felt the urge to write – an urge that she believes was directly from God. “I felt directed to write and knew it needed to be a Christian writing,” she said.

“Then I wrapped it in a story that draws a more widespread readership.”

The primary character begins a conversation with her God as she struggles to find direction in her life as a single woman.

What begins as a straightforward rescue mission rapidly becomes complicated.

faces new issues and draws on her emerging strength to assist this woman to a better life.

Drama, empathy, trial and error all draw the reader deeper and deeper into a compelling story.

Fox admitted her own faith was the primary prompt for this book.

“I wanted to write something that would trigger people to think about God,” she said.

“I wanted the interplay with the main character and God to bring God to the average person with scripture references, but in a manner that would perhaps get the average reader thinking.”

And those

conversations between Kim and her God are anything but dry and dusty, they are modern and challenging, just about as casual as one might get with God. “I wanted to present the conversations with God in an intimate, personal and approachable way,” Fox said.

“I believe God hears no matter what the language.”

Piper’s Call is published by Christian publishing company Essence.

Fox has no illusions of her book making any best seller list but she has hopes for its impact on those who read it.

“I know this book has been a spiritual journey for me and I hope this helps people in their relationship

with God,” she said.

“So in a small way, it’s a bit of a ministry and the book is relevant to both men and women and the value of having a daily relationship with God.” Piper’s Call is the first in a trilogy Fox has planned. All three books feature Kim Piper and all three titles give a little insight into the focus of the book.

Piper in Crisis is scheduled to be released in the fall of this year.

QJS students stop talking to support children around the world Approximately 30 students at Quesnel junior school did the unthinkable – they stayed absolutely silent for 24 hours last Thursday.

This feat was accomplished through the We are Silent campaign to raise money and awareness of children around the world who are silenced by poverty and exploitation.

We are Silent is one of Free The Children’s fundraising and awareness-raising campaigns that engages tens of thousands of participants to stand up for children whose rights are not being upheld.

From Toronto to Mexico City, London to San Francisco, Beijing to Jakarta, Vancouver to Sydney and back, on April 18, they go silent for 24 hours

in solidarity with children around the world.

215 million children are forced to work as child labourers and are denied the right to attend school.

One in every three children in developing countries is malnourished.

One billion children are deprived of essential services like food, water, education or health care.

We are Silent is made possible

by Second Cup, a chain of cafes dedicated to free trade coffee and other products. The campaign began in 2004 and challenges participants to stand in silent solidarity for 24 hours with children whose voices are silenced by not having their rights upheld.

Carrot or stick?

F

ive or six years ago, my husband and I organized a family reunion. We had people travel from across the country and from just down the road. About 65 of us gathered at a rented lodge near Hope and let me say: we had a ball! All 65 of us had lots of patience, lots of good humour and lots of our own ideas! One morning when Keith was trying to get the caravan of vehicles organized for a trip to Hell’s Gate, someone remarked Peggy Corbett how much the task Seventh-day Adventist Church resembled “herding cats.”

Every time we were ready to pull out, someone would erupt from a vehicle to race back in for something forgotten or for “one last pit stop.”

We finally got going and had a great laugh about the whole thing.

Anyone who has worked with a group of people on any project knows that coordinating everyone takes a great bit of persistence and good humour. Having said that, and conceding that the “carrot” usually works better than the “stick”, there are times when the leader just has to make the decision and take the flack. I’ve seen this dynamic in families, committees, schoolrooms and churches. But as the group gets bigger, so does the potential for complications. And when we think of our “society at large”, things can get really messy, very quickly.

Many times I have heard someone bemoan a situation by saying, “Why don’t they just do the right thing?” I can imagine God observing our world and expressing the same sentiment! Why do we find it so difficult to “obey”? Perhaps the answer partially lies in our perception of the Person asking us to obey.

The Bible seems to be full of examples of God choosing the military model of obedience: do what I say, or else! And while this method works many times, the result is for the shortterm only. So I like to keep my eyes open to see if God is truly a Heavenly-drill-sergeant, or if He uses that method as an emergency measure, when nothing else seems to work. Sure enough, in the midst of disciplinary crisis I find this passage in Malachi 3, verse 6: I am the Lord, and I do not change. And so you. . .are not yet completely lost. . .Now return to me and I will return to you.

His mercy and grace never change; His goal for every action is restoration for us to happiness and health. And the additional confirmation of this truth is the fact that He came Himself to show us the truth about His character and His motives for every action toward us. Jesus said in John 12, verse 44: For when you see me, you are seeing the one who sent me. I can trust in and am happy to respond to Someone who loves me that much.

The farm that Arnold built

suppose it’s not a farm in the true sense of the word; it has no horses or cows, pigs or goats and no tractor. It does have 12 chickens, half an acre in vegetables, two greenhouses, numerous fruit trees, a rototiller and Arnold. When you have a man like Arnold, who knows how to build with stone, create a greenhouse out of salvaged windows and make his own wine from crab apples, that’s all you need.

the end of Ellison Road, they thought they knew a thing or two about gardening.

Their previous home on Beach Crescent had produced beans so tall they required a step ladder to harvest and both had grown up with gardens.

Gardening in their new home proved to be a humbling experience. The land needed to be cleared

of trees and the soil built up with any compost they could find – manure, spoiled hay or even sawdust.

Today Donna is able to live off smoothies made with her frozen raspberries and strawberries all year.

When their girls lived in Wells, they swear they supplied half the town with veggies all summer and even when I visited in early February their freezer, root cellar and cold room still held plenty of home grown food.

They start their 12 flats of seeds in the two story sun room Arnold built across the side of the house or in the greenhouse built of recycled windows. Because they are frugal, they wait until early April to begin so the longer days provide adequate heat and light. No artificial light or heat required.

CHIPS program showing great results The 2013 Quesnel CHIP, “Complete Health Improvement Project,” is into its final stages and has once again shown itself to be a program that delivers “Proven Results” and “Priceless Benefits”.

The participants are enjoying being “CEO” and “Chairman of the Board” for everything that goes into their bodies and influences their health and wellbeing. To be truthful, not everyone in the program had spectacular results, but the averages were still impressive.

Of the 24 participants in this year’s program, the average drop in Total Cholesterol (TC) was 13 per cent, which represents a 30 per cent drop in risk of heart attack – very significant if you are the one experiencing that kind of life changing result. LDL (bad cholesterol) was down an average of 11.3 per cent and triglycerides were down 18.1 per cent. The average weight loss was 9.8 pounds and blood pressures were also down along with pulse rates.

These results are amazing when one realizes that these results are accomplished in only 30 days of following the CHIP program.

One of our participants had a 41.9 per cent drop in TC and with that drop he is now considered practically “heart attack proof” by some researchers. Joining the program while still taking some cholesterol lowering drugs, he is hoping his physician will take him off the medications, an action which will save him both money and side effects.

And he still enjoys the other health benefits the program has afforded him. His LDL

is down by a whopping 55.6 per cent. He is now 14.5 pounds lighter on the scales and says, while on this program, he has eaten more food than ever before. He reports that he has not been hungry since starting CHIP and now talks about his new lease on life and that he expects to live longer and happier while enjoying his family well into his retirement.

Another participant, also on cholesterol lowering drugs, managed to drop her TC by 33.8 per cent and her Triglycerides by an amazing 69 per cent. We do not have an LDL drop for her as the Triglycerides were so high at the start of the program that the LDL could not be measured by the lab. Happily though we can now report that the LDL is well into the “ideal” range (1.76) and the Triglycerides are down to 2.91. She lost 11 pounds and her blood pressure went from 140/86, which is high, down to 121/77 which is normal. She is delighted, of course and her doctor has taken her off the statin drugs.

If you took advantage of layers of clothes and waves of cold weather to hide from exercise this winter, Reason 2 Run has the perfect group to make your summer exercise debut.

Starting the first Friday of May, Candace Miller, from Reason 2 Run, will take neophyte runners from zero (k) to hero – a five kilometre run constitutes a hero.

Participants wanting to run off winter cobwebs will start slowly and move up over the eight weeks of the program until they are running the whole five kilometres without pause.

Sound impossible? Probably, but Miller, who knows what she’s talking about, counters that it’s not as hard as you might make it out to be in your head.

“The hardest part is signing up, but once you get here you realize that was the hardest part. It’s strength in numbers. Once you get here you’ll see all these other people there who have said they can’t run more than a couple minutes at a time,” Miller said.

“Show up and you’ll know you’ll be able to do it.”

The trick to training a group of people who get winded talking about going for a run is a slow progression.

cranks up the pace one week at a time.

“The first week, for instance, we walk for a warm-up for five minutes, then do a walk/run regiment, one minute running, one minute walking, for about 20 minutes,” Miller said.

“Then we walk the rest of the five kilometres. Then we work up to two, then three minutes till we’re running the whole distance at the end of the eight weeks.”

And before you know it you’re running for half an hour straight.

To cap off the accomplishment, participants will be able to participate in a timed 5k run.

The only requirements to join the group are a $50 fee, a pair of runners on your feet and a water bottle in your hand.

And if, at the June 25 conclusion of the program, your need to run hasn’t been fully satiated, graduates are welcome to slide into the trail running group, which starts a couple weeks earlier, on June 6.

“Once they’re done the 5k, the trail running is very achievable,” Miller said.

The base endurance the beginner group installs is more than enough to bring runners up to the challenge of the trail run, which has more stopping and starting and features different groups based on pace and ability.

The trail running group costs $75 and runs through to July 11.

Gold Pan City Sport Shorts Turkey shoot It’s time to celebrate the greening weather with a big bang – the report of a shotgun. And if you want somewhere to aim that buckshot, the Quesnel Rod and Gun club has targets they’re aiming at putting holes in, with the pay off coming in turkeys.

It’s the first Tturkey shoot of the season, next Saturday and everyone’s invited to grab their favourite gun and give’r a go.

It all begins 9 a.m. on Saturday, with a cost of $5 per event.

Derby If the great outdoors isn’t your thing, try staying indoors and watching a roller derby extravaganza as derby girls from all over the province come to Quesnel for the Rainbow Rampage.

Tickets cost $10 each, with kids 10 and under sneaking in under the radar for free. Doors open at 6 p.m., first whistle

at 7 p.m. There will be a beer garden for the 19+ crowd.

Tickets are available at Ready 2 Run or any of the derby girls.

Skating The Quesnel FSC will wow crowds with a full show of Movie, Magic and Music with a whole lot of graceful skating. The club will host two shows at the Twin Arenas, first at 1 p.m. and the final at 6 p.m. on April 27.

Tickets are available at the door or at the Hi Chic cutting lounge or at the door.

Cutting If none of the above strike your fancy, never fear, because this weekend is a busy one indeed, and there remains another option: the cutting horse competition. The event runs both Saturday and Sunday, with the action starting at 9 a.m. both days.

Williams Lake opens the rodeo season Good news cowboys and cowgirls, the rodeo's back.

Last weekend an array of riders gathered in Williams Lake to kick off the rodeo season and compete in the first rodeo of the year.

Americans came in and took over in bareback, capturing both first and third in the event.

Dan Ketter, of Olympia, Washington, got the best of the bareback riders, on the back of The Graduate. Jared Marshall, from P.G., riding on Simon's Bear and Orlan McGuffin, of Ellensburg, Washington, riding Smokin' Gun, tied for a split 2/3 finish.

Virgil Poffenroth, riding out of Riske Creek, took the top slot in tie-down roping, followed by Brad Thomas from Williams Lake and

Logan Wharry out of Langley.

Kaila Mussel dominated the saddle bronc ranks, taking first on the aptly named Pay Day and second on the back of Starbucks.

Quesnel's own Steve Hohman stepped into third off the back of Step'n Stone.

Wharry also wrestled well, taking first in steer wrestling, followed by Mike Gill, from Merritt and Luke Simonin, out of Naramata.

In breakaway roping, Charlie Soffel out of Vanderhoof, took the big purse. Allison Everett out to 150 Mile House came in second, followed by Keely Dunrell, from Riske Creek.

out of Tatla Lake.

In ladies barrel racing, Julie Leggett from Kamloops took first, followed by Cathy Bueckert from Vanderhoof and Joleen Seitz out of Savona.

Callie Hume, riding out of Williams Lake, took first in junior barrel racing. Cache Creek's Sofeya Smith took second followed by a tie between Mariah Mannering of Quesnel and Tosha Seitz of Savona, for third.

Devon Robbins sat atop the junior steer riding heap.

Under him was Jackson Scott from Kamloops, and Kyle Bell from Houston rounding out the top three.

The Gold Pan team of Russell Glassford and Steve Lloyd found themselves on top in team roping.

The Alphabet Farm A is for animal sometimes found on the farm, If you treat them well, you’ll come by no harm.

B is for babies born in early spring, Soon out with the others the mother will bring.

C is for cattle that roam on the range, To see them out grazing is not too strange.

D is for dog who comes out while you feed, He’s very well minded and knows how to heed.

E is for elk who like to be seen, Out in the field when the grass is all green.

F is for farmer who works hard every day, Feeding the cattle with silage and hay.

G is for grain that the cattle all like, Up to the barn every day they will hike.

H is horses which some farmers ride, But really I think that it’s only for pride.

I is for injection given when cattle are sick, Must be real careful for they sometimes will kick.

J is for just keep working real hard, You can’t even relax, ‘cause you’re always on guard.

K is for keeping the cattle fenced in, For once they break, they’re surely to win.

L is for lunch that is quite often late,

Joy and happiness, is ringing out; If there’s things to be done, it will just have to wait.

As we all mingle and shuffle about.

M is for mother which each cow’s become, There’ll be laughter, there’ll be tears; They seem so contented when the calf moos for mom.

As we ponder over forty years.

N is for never that your work’s ever done, Some of us just opt to stay; You’ll have to make work into some kind of fun.

While others chose to move away.

O is for often the fences break down, The school’s still standing, same old spot; The new face lift, sure helped a lot.

If you don’t get them fixed, the cows head to town.

P is for plowing the ground to plant seed, Grades one to twelve, we all were there; In hopes of producing the animals feed.

One small classroom we did share.

We had reading, writing and the “Lord’s Prayer;” Q is for quitter of which I am not, Rules, regulations and the strap were there.

I’ll stay on this ranch till the day that I rot.

R is for resting something farmers don’t do, The town was small, all knew one another; Each was treated like a sister or brother.

It’s long into evening before they get through.

Couldn’t play hooky without getting caught; W is for water every day cows must drink, Too many knew you, so you’d better not.

If you ever run out, there’s a problem I think.

Chewing gum and talking were not allowed; X is for x-ray the vet maybe will take, Or you would be picked out from the crowd.

If a calf has a fall, a bone it might break.

Gum on your nose, out in the hall; Hands behind your back and nose to the wall.

Y is for yesterday a day of the past, Today is another, and it just won’t last.

Blue jeans, strides and bobby socks were in style; Z is for zoo that this ranching’s become, After getting all dressed, we’d put on a smile.

That’s something I remember all too well; I really don’t know where it’s all coming from.

A lot more often than I’d like to tell.
