In a sparsely populated auditorium Saturday afternoon, the four candidates vying to represent the Shuswap riding in B.C.’s provincial election agreed on several issues, one of them being their top priority if elected. In response to a question about what they would lobby for with the interests of the Shuswap in mind, all candidates said jobs. B.C. Conservative candidate Tom Birch suggested working in co-operation with municipalities, noting
that a community forest such as Sicamous has requested would create forestry jobs. He also touted the revitalization of a small-scale salvage program. Other priorities were improving the Trans-Canada Highway in the area, and bringing fiscal health back to B.C. Chris George of the Green Party of B.C. said he would work to bring green jobs to the Shuswap, so the dads working in the north can make a living here. He would support becoming more of a senior-based community, with affordable housing and in-home support that would keep seniors in their homes. He would

also like to see the Shuswap Lake Integrated Planning Process move from a test project to a “full-blown water board” that is working well in the Okanagan. Steve Gunner of the NDP reiterated the need for jobs to bring people back from the north, particularly jobs in the high tech sector, “with so many talented people” here. He said more work in health is needed with the number of seniors and baby boomers in the riding. He also touched on the environment, particularly support for agriculture and the role of test kitchens in adding value to agricultural products. Tractors Starting at
Liberal candidate Greg Kyllo said he thinks he has more experience, via Twin Anchors Marine/TA Structures, in job creation than the rest of the candidates. He said four-laning the Trans-Canada Highway would increase tourism and facilitate getting products to market. He said an existing fibre optic line near the rail line would provide an opportunity for a call centre in the Shuswap.
