T-Cats hosting golf tourney

The fifth annual Creston Valley Thunder Cats golf tournament fundraiser is scheduled for May 4, committee member Bob Foreman said last week.

“This year, in addition to the funds raised to assist the community-owned hockey team, a portion of the money will go to support Muscular Dystrophy Canada, in partnership with Creston Fire and Rescue,” he said.

One-third of the funds raised will be directed to MDC, Foreman said.

Sponsorships and prize donations are welcome.

“You don’t need to be a great golfer to enjoy this tournament, which is a fun and friendly scramble,” he said.

Cost to register is $65 for Creston Golf Club members who have paid their green fees and $75 for non-members. Individuals or teams can register by calling 250-428-5515 or emailing proshop@crestongolfclub.com by May 1.

The event includes a best-ball scramble tournament, catered dinner and live and silent auctions.

Masters’ works lead to audio-visual gallery Alison Masters made watercolour and pencil sketches each evening after a day of walking during a two-month trek with her husband, Dave Drennan, along the famed pilgrimage path from Seville to Santiago de Compostela in Spain.

She had no idea at the time that those sketches would eventually lead to a multimedia collaboration with two other Creston artists.

“We walked 1,000 kilometres from Seville to Finisterre (the coastal town near Santiago de Compostela),” she said. ”Every day after we finished walking, I painted from anywhere from 15 to about 45 minutes. I would just find a little scene and I’d used my watercolours and my pencils.

By the end of the trip, I had filled two sketchbooks, so that was about 100 pages of sketches.”

Back in the studio behind her Ninth Avenue North home, Masters found inspiration to approach her art in a different way than she usually has.

“When we got home I had all these sketches and I’ve never before been able to turn sketches into paintings,” she aid. “What I’ve always done is gone out onsite with really big boards and painted what I was looking at.

“So, I just started with some of my favourite little sketches and I decided that as a working title I would call them Travel Posters. It just seemed like they were headed in a direction of how you would want to advertise a place if you wanted people to go there — they are kind of happy. I could just see them as advertising posters.

“After about 10 months of painting I had 34 paintings. They were mostly the same size — 2.5 feet by 2.5 feet — and some of them were painted over and over. I’d paint on a board and I wouldn’t like what I’d done so I’d flip it over and I wouldn’t like what I’d done so I’d flip it over again. So some of the paintings have paintings underneath that show through.”

Having 34 complete paintings is one thing, though. Finding a suitable way to display them is another.

“I had 34 paintings and I was starting to show them a little bit in my studio. People would come

through and say, ‘I want that painting,’ and I’d say, ‘You can’t have it.’ Do you remember that?” she asked one of the people in the room.

“What I was realizing was that I really wanted to see them all together before I released them into the world. Each painting was so dependent on the other paintings. I would learn from one painting to try something else and there was just a real thread from one to the other.

“I wanted to show them in Creston and I wanted to show them together, but I couldn’t think of any place where I could show 34 large paintings all at once. I started thinking, ‘Well you could sort of make your own gallery.’

“I started thinking of projections. If nothing else we have lots of buildings here. Wouldn’t that be a cool thing to do, project them onto a wall outdoors?”

She applied to Columbia Basin Trust for a grant after calling animation and video artist Richard Reeves to see if he would be interested in creating a digital presentation of the paintings.

“I sort of knew Richard from another art exhibit and asked him, ‘Do you want to be a part of this?’

He said yes, but I don’t even know if he knew who I was!”

The grant was approved, and in September Reeves went to work with his camera.

“He took a set of pictures and he was so meticulous,” Masters recalled. “Then he came back and said, ‘I don’t like these pictures and we’re going to do this again.’ ” Reeves went to work in his own studio, with only the vaguest of instructions.

“What I always said to Richard was, ‘I want my paintings to be shown in the most beautiful gallery in the whole world.’”

The English-born Reeves created a 43-minute silent presentation.

The resulting DVD showed each picture for just over minute.

Audiences would see a close-up of a small portion of a painting and then the camera would pan to other portions before moving back to show the work in full. The result was a meditative tour of Masters’ memories of those evenings on the Camino de Santiago, each spent in a small Spanish town or village.

The paintings are shown in chronological order.

Reeves has a long history in the animation world and locally

has shown short films he has made by scratching images onto film strips. The process is meticulous and time-consuming, made more complicated when he also scratches on the edge of the filmstrip to create sounds to accompany the images. He has traveled the world, teaching workshops and working on projects in Europe, South America and Australia.

For Travel Posters @ the Night Gallery, Reeves used his digital expertise to make a computergenerated film.

“I really enjoyed exploring ways to show audiences paintings within each painting, working to bring out the vivid colours that Alison used,” Reeves said.

The resulting video got positive responses when it was projected onto an exterior wall, on a chilly night, at Adam Robertson Elementary School. Later, it would be shown at Prince Charles Theatre before a Friends of the Cinema movie presentation.

stereotypical Spanish music.”

Enter a mutual friend, who suggested to musician Gary Deatherage that he might consider writing some music for the pictures. He had only seen Travel Posters @ the Night Gallery once.

“I was inspired by it because there is something different,” he said. “I didn’t look at a painting and think, ‘I’m going to do this with it.’ I thought more of a theme.”

He wrote eight short pieces of music without Masters’ knowledge.

“Gary phoned me about two weeks after he saw the video and said. ‘I’ve composed eight pieces of music for Travel Posters. Do you want to hear them?’ I said, ‘What?’

“I went over to Gary’s studio and we started immediately matching the music to images.

Then Gary composed some more music and Richard and I went back there and we did that four times and matched 34 pieces of music perfectly to 34 paintings.”

Deatherage is a retired psychologist who spends much of his time in his backyard music studio, Fort Cosmos Studios,

which he shares with his son, Jason. A prolific writer of words and music, he used “every guitar and instrument in the studio.”

“I wanted a Spanish feel but not to overdo the Spanish guitar thing. This was one of the few projects I’ve had where I could do anything I wanted to,” he said. “My inspiration was to use a different instrument to give each piece a different sound.”

Not that it was without challenges.

“Writing short, one-minute pieces was quite different for me,” he said. “With any other song I’ve ever written I could go as long as I wanted to go.”

Putting the music together with the pictures was a threeway collaboration. The musical pieces weren’t necessarily written for a specific painting, so Masters, Reeves and Deatherage would listen to the music and then find an appropriate match.

As visual artists, Masters and Reeves both say they see colours when they listen to music.

“Alison would listen and say, ‘That’s a street,’ or ‘That’s a sky, so it goes with this painting,’ ” Deatherage said. “And it wasn’t just her, Richard was the same way.”

With the audio-visual version of Travel Posters @ the Night Gallery complete, Gary and Jason burned DVDs and designed a cover and liner notes.

For her part, Masters’ twomonth trek along the SpanishPortuguese border has continued throughout her own painting process, Reeves’ work on the video presentation and Deatherage’s musical contribution.

She said the unanticipated collaboration has proven to be inspiring, a sentiment echoed by Reeves and Deatherage. They are already working on a second project, with a third now in the discussion stage.

“This has been an amazing adventure,” Masters said with a wide smile.

Travel Posters @ the Night Gallery will be shown in “an evening of film-music-painting collaboration” at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at Prince Charles Theatre. The evening is a celebration of Arts and Culture Week and will include live music by the Howling Wannabes (in which Deatherage plays) and “cameraless animation” by Reeves. Admission is by donation.

Potential pot growers must meet local guidelines

A steady stream of criminal record check requests is piling up on Creston RCMP Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan’s desk at such an alarming rate that he has been forced to institute guidelines before accepting them for processing.

“These are for people who want to apply for licenses to grow medical marijuana,” he said, pointing to the pile of papers. “But most of them haven’t addressed the requirements set out, so it’s a waste of our tight resources to conduct every request.”

Gollan said the applications are being fuelled by the federal government’s plan to start licensing private medical marijuana producers in 2014.

“There are people who think they are going to grow medical marijuana in their homes,” he said. “But that wouldn’t be allowed in Town of Creston or RDCK (Regional District of Central Kootenay) zoning bylaws.”

Gollan said he has no issue with authorizing the record checks for applicants that have a plan that includes meeting local bylaws and meeting the onerous security requirements for the premises.

Police Beat Creston RCMP responded to 70 calls for service from April 15-21, Gollan said.

April 15 •A red bicycle found near Canyon Street can be claimed at the police station.

•Police were unable to locate the female driver of a van who was talking on a cellphone when she nearly ran over a male at a group mailbox on Highway 3.

•A Calgary driver reported colliding with a deer on Highway 3/95 on April 11.

•An Erickson Road resident reported being a victim of a computer scam in which a warning claiming to be from the RCMP pops up, ordering payment of a fine before the computer can be used again.

•A Cook Street resident complained about a person who was standing and staring at her.

•A person reported to be a possibly impaired driver was located by police, but was found not to be over the limit.

April 16 •An unruly customer at a 16th Avenue business left before police arrived.

•Party on! Two males who attended

court to support their buddy were intoxicated and carrying alcohol with them. The liquor was seized and the men were held in police cells until sober.

•Police helped resolve a family dispute on Hurl Street.

•About $3,000 in damage resulted when a vehicle backed into another on Simon Road.

•A male reported to be causing a disturbance by crying on Canyon Street told police he was distraught over financial problems.

•An elderly male reported to be driving erratically was found to be in medical distress and taken to the hospital.

April 17 •Police are investigating a disturbing call to a Corn Creek Road resident from the Salmon Arm area.

•A lock was broken off a Highway 21 shed, but no theft was apparent.

•A break and enter that apparently took place on Highway 3A in November netted thieves a laptop computer and some coins.

•Police were unable to trace a vehicle that drove through a crosswalk while a pedestrian was in it. The plate number provided did not match the description of the car.

•Horses were reported to be loose on Highway 3A near Wynndel.

•A firearm was turned in for destruction from an Erickson Road residence.

April 18 •No injuries were reported from a single vehicle accident on Highway 3.

•A van reported to be driving erratically and slowly on Highway 3A was not located.

•A 15-year-old male was arrested and later released on conditions after assaulting his grandmother at a Scott Street residence.

April 19 •Police received a complaint about an aggressive wild turkey on 16th Avenue North.

•A quantity of beer was stolen from a parked transport trailer on Erickson Road.

•Police are investigating a case in which a vehicle speeding around a Canyon-Lister Road curve nearly struck a pedestrian.

•Patrols will be increased after complaints about an ongoing problem of vehicles not stopping for pedestrians on Cedar Street.

•An anonymous report was made about a pit bull chasing cars on Dogwood Street.

•The theft of firewood and an axe was reported from a seasonal cabin near Gray Creek.

•A truck driver crossing into Canada at Kingsgate now has a date for a court appearance after being found with 1.4 grams of heroin.

•Youths reported to be shooting an air gun in Centennial Park were gone when police arrived.

April 20 •Cedar Street residents arrived home to find their house being ransacked by three males. One, Brenton Chambers, 20, was detained until police arrived.

He was held in custody after being charged with break and entry, assault with a weapon and assault causing bodily harm. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of another male, who has been identified, for the same crimes. A third male has yet to be identified.

•A male reported to be taking photos of people on Canyon Street told police he was merely reading from his cellphone and not taking photos.

McDonald Area C hands out CBT funds

Regional District of Central Kootenay Area C director Larry Binks has announced that his area recommended the distribution of $30,000 in Columbia Basin Trust funding under the Community Initiatives Program.

Binks said total requests were more than three times what Area C had available to distribute.

From page 1 Born in Creston, McDonald has spent most of her life in Creston, with the exception of her first six years, when her father travelled in the Air Force, and some time at the University of Lethbridge.

Her previous volunteer work went hand-in-hand with her children’s education and activities, and she served as treasurer for the Creston Valley Minor Hockey Association, and worked with parent advisory councils and the high school band.

She got involved with PAWS after her husband, Jim, who died in 2011, found two dogs while hauling equipment in the bush in 1997. The dogs were fearful, something McDonald had no experience with, so she took them to obedience training with the late Claudia Grimstead, a founder of PAWS. “I took them to Claudia and the next thing I knew, I was in PAWS,” McDonald said. “Once I started, it was almost like an addiction. I love animals, especially dogs. I’ve learned so much being part of this. It’s just an amazing thing to do.”

She eventually became treasurer and then vice-president, before an 11-year stint as president following Grimstead’s death in a 2001 car accident. At the time, the five-year-old organization’s desire to build an animal shelter was growing.

“But rather than giving up Claudia’s dream,” said McDonald in her final president’s report at the March 21 annual general meeting, “her death spurred on not only

PAWS members but many friends and community members, as well, to work even harder to help animals, and to fundraise to realize that dream.”

A short time later, PAWS was able to establish a small office next to Columbia Bottle Recycle, after years of “not knowing where we were going to hold meetings.”

And in June 2002, about a dozen members began the huge task of caring for 56 dogs found near Topaz Creek on Highway 3. Their nationally-recognized effort led to a large private sector grant that allowed the 2004 purchase of property on Lower Wynndel Road.

In 2010, the group took a step further when its new shelter, Claudia’s Place, opened, providing a permanent location for PAWS, which helped the group’s volunteer roster grow from five in the early days to over 50.

“Having a physical presence where people can see what we have and what we’re doing made a huge difference to draw people in,” said McDonald.

The shelter wasn’t the end, though; the PAWS five-year plan includes an area for livestock and large animals, an off-leash park and a memorial garden for pet remains.

The organization also plans to work more closely with emergency social services to evacuate animals in danger.

McDonald has seen animals in danger firsthand, having visited New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina left hundreds of pets without owners. One of her two dogs is a Katrina rescue, and the other came from PAWS. “The most important thing I’ve

Until the last few years Canadians have rarely heard about a “need” to bring temporary foreign workers into the country, except for the harvesting of agricultural crops.

Now, it seems hardly a day passes without a related story. A Chinese-owned mine operation “needs” to bring in Chinese miners who have experience in a specific type of mining (turns out they didn’t have that experience). The Royal Bank of Canada, struggling after posting a mere $7.5-billion profit last year, contracts with an Indian company, then instructs Canadian workers help train the temporary workers, who can then carry on the work overseas next year. The list goes on.

A red flag seemed to wave in front of my eyes last month when an analyst, speaking on CBC Radio, said that the federal government’s own statistics on labour and employment failed to indicate any real labour shortage in any part of the country. That, it occurred to me, just might be an explanation for the Harper government’s disdain for research and data collection, at least as it pertains to the stuff that is actually intended to be available to the interested public.

The analyst implied that the likelihood is that “labour shortages” are in fact a euphemism for expensive (a.k.a. Canadian) labour, and that there is increasing business pressure on the federal government to approve applications for temporary foreign workers, who tend to be paid less, who can’t organize themselves into unions, who are more easily intimidated and controlled and who can simply

be shipped back home when they are no longer needed, wanted or welcomed.

Mindful eating is slow eating

You may have heard of slow food proponents who recommend avoiding processed foods and eating only natural foods. They have a good idea, but they forget to mention how important it is to eat those slow foods slowly. Many of us rush through meals with a gobble-gulp-and-go attitude that leads to stressful, unhealthy living.

With the simple but powerful act of eating slower, we calm our lives down and step away from excessive busyness. It takes a few minutes extra each meal, and yet it can have profound effects. All you have to do is take smaller bites, chew each bite more slowly and more fully, and enjoy your meal longer. There are some practical reasons to consider the simple act of eating slower.

Weight loss. A growing number of studies confirm that by eating slower, you’ll consume fewer calories — in fact, enough to lose 20 pounds a year without doing anything different or changing your diet. It takes about 20 minutes for our brains to register that we’re full. If we eat fast, we often continue eating past the point where we’ve had enough. If we eat slowly, we have time to realize we’re full, and stop earlier.

Enjoy your food. It’s hard to enjoy your food if it goes by too quickly.

Think about it. You want to eat your favourite foods because they taste good. But if you eat them fast, what’s

the point? If you eat them slowly, you can get the same amount of taste, but with less food entering your stomach. The math works. Slow eating enhances the gastronomic pleasures of eating.

Better digestion. If you eat slower, you chew your food better, which leads to more nutrients being absorbed in the mouth. Digestion actually starts in the mouth, so the more work you do there, the less you’ll have to do in your stomach.

This can result in fewer digestion problems.

Less stress. Eating slowly and paying attention to our eating is a great mindfulness exercise. It is the

perfect place to practice being in the moment. Instead of rushing through a meal thinking about what you need to do next, when you eat, just eat. This kind of mindfulness, will lead to a less stressful life, and to long-term happiness.

Rebel against fast food and fast life. Our modern day hectic, fast-paced, stressful lifestyle leads to eating salty, fatty and sugar-laced fast foods, and to eating them quickly. This lifestyle dehumanizes us, makes us unhealthy, stresses us out and robs us of the pleasure of taking the time to enjoy life, to enjoy each other, to be human. We can rebel against that entire lifestyle and philosophy with the small act of eating slower. And we can teach our children the deep intelligence of eating slowly by slowing down at the dinner table.

Suggested practice: For the next two weeks, when you eat your evening meal, put your fork or spoon down between bites. If you have children, make a game out of it.

Bank policy morally wrong To the Editor: Well, it took nearly a week for the big boss of the Royal Bank of Canada to apologize for his organization’s plan to fire 45 of its Canadian employees — after they had trained foreigners to do their jobs. His published letter of April 11 argued that the bank had done nothing illegal but implied that the policy it had followed was morally wrong.

We must all hope that he was sincere about the second point because that is the crux of the issue.

Remember how, in the late 18th century, Scottish lairds drove their tenant farmers off their estates because raising sheep for wool became more lucrative, or how the Luddites of Lancashire were displaced by more efficient weaving machines in the late 19th century?

What’s the connection between those two historical events and the Royal Bank affair? In all three cases, human beings lost their livelihoods (and in the Scottish case, their homes) because their landlords or their employers saw a chance to make more money by getting rid of them.

I’m not arguing that new technologies (or kinds of land use) should never be introduced when they involve fewer jobs for human employees. That would be misguided “reverse Luddism,” and detrimental to the best interests of society as a whole.

But human beings are not just machines, to be suddenly cast aside if cheaper or more efficient ways of getting the job done come along. They are, well, human beings — men and women who, as long as they are loyal and do their jobs properly, are entitled to expect respect, decent treatment and, yes , loyalty, from their employers.

In other words, they should be entitled to keep their jobs until they reach retirement age, given the option of alternative, comparable employment or wellpaid early retirement or otherwise shielded from the steamroller of “progress.”

The love of money may not be the root of all evil. Indeed, the love of money can be a motivator of human progress. But the love of money, if unbridled by self-restraint, is the cause of far too much evil, especially when it is yoked with economic and/or political power, as is so often the case today.

So what’s the remedy? The love of money must be curbed by politically enacted and governmentally enforced restraints, so as to ensure that it does not override the legitimate expectations and rights of people like those Royal Bank of Canada employees.

Meantime, the final outcome for all my efforts and stress and about $500 in various fees and costs connected with the testing, was a letter from OSMV telling me that effective immediately it is unsafe for me to drive, and I was ordered to return my driver’s licence by Jan. 25, 2013 — which I did. My little homestead is 45 kilometres north of Creston and there is no public transportation, so I now live more or less like under house arrest. The OSMV did offer to review their decision if I submit another cognitive test. This was done, and results are expected in two months from the date their office receives the submission.

The politicians and others who approved the DriveAble tests are forcing on seniors the most complicated and demanding standards of the entire driving population — and for what? Before DriveAble appeared, elders simply quit driving when they were not able to continue, and this was decided in the family, without the help of doctors, politicians and professors, and the roads were as safe then as they will ever be. But the government is pressing forward with the DriveAble, as if there were an emergency in B.C., with seniors veering and lurching down the highways and byways.

However, according to Powell River MLA Nicholas Simons, the Sunshine Coast Opposition critic for Community Living BC, things are not nearly as bad.

He says, “Seniors are very safe drivers.

Many drive with extra care, and limit themselves to driving in good conditions — and even then, only when necessary.

Seniors are not involved in disproportionate numbers of collisions. … Seniors should have the right to be assessed in their own community, they should only be tested using familiar technology and any on-road driving tests should be in a familiar vehicle on familiar roads.”

The original decision to bring DriveAble from Alberta was not about road safety; it was a decision concerning former premier Gordon Campbell, and the marketing department of DriveAble company. The premier, as you remember, had badly tarnished his image by his drunken driving in Hawaii, so to improve his image he made some innovative moves, and DriveAble was one of them, even though we had in place throughout the province the ICBC testing. That was in 2005. But why keep the costly parallel system of testing now when all areas of public spending are being severely reduced, and Campbell is gone?

Also, the special needs of older drivers could have been met within the framework of the ICBC testing, carried out on familiar grounds, at a fraction of the cost, and with due respect and consideration for seniors. When you think how old people are forced to do these tests, you can be sure there is something seriously wrong with DriveAble, and you can be also sure that any society that approves such and similar mistreatment of seniors, is a society that has lost its bearings.

DriveAble needs fixing Trapping laws are unsafe To the Editor: Since I got involved in the new driver’s licence testing, starting with the memory tests in the doctor’s office in October 2012, and the DriveAble screen test and the road test in Nelson, I repeatedly heard that the tests have nothing to do with the doctor; however, the Office of the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles states that “the majority of referrals (98 per cent) are from doctors.” Of course, the individual doctor does not make the rules, but at the same time some doctors make an effort to get the best deal for the patient, and there are also doctors who

Two weeks ago, Arielle, a German shepherd belonging to three young girls, died in a trap. The trap was set at the bottom edge of the dike along the Reclamation Road stretch of the river, a few hundred metres from the house, in

an area they often run the dogs in.

We have since discovered that trapping season runs from October to April, and trappers on public access land do not legally have to post signs or advise landowners, nearby residents or anyone that the traps are there.

The rights or wrongs of trapping aren’t the point here, but public safety — the safety of myself, family and friends, and our dogs in our own backyard — is.

If you have to hire a trapper, think it through, accept some responsibility, tell your neighbours and their neighbours, and insist the trapper places signs. Know what your trapper will use and when.

During the six months of trapping season, I have the following advice: To anyone intending to exercise their public access rights and enjoy the use of the river or riverside for water activities or to have a family outing along the riverside/dikes, I say be careful! Stay in the boat and if on land, leave the dogs at home, put the kids on a leash and watch carefully where you put your feet!

To the trappers, use your brains! Traps are weapons that kill and seriously injure.

If you want to trap beavers, use beaver traps in the water and not spiked ones capable of holding a bear on land where people have a legal right to be. Place signs, stretch a bit of tape along trees around the immediate perimeter, notify the landowner and adjoining properties — accept responsibility for your actions.

To animal activists or bored morons who think it’s smart to remove signs the few conscientious trappers left still place, think again — your past actions contributed to Arielle’s death. Set the traps off if you want, but leave the signs alone. If you miss a trap and have taken the signs, any deaths or injuries are on your head not the trappers’.

And finally to the council, provincial officials, conservation officers and all other relevant lawmakers who forgot to make rules for signage and warnings for trapping on public access land, three dogs were killed in Creston this year and many more across B.C. You know about the problem, and know it’s only a matter of time before a kid or person is trapped.

This is outrageous — quit procrastinating and fix the laws, now!

Abortion a serious issue To the Editor: (Re: “This is the Life: Quotes that shape thinking”, April 11 Advance) To compare the choice of whether to eat pork or not (for religious reasons in the case cited) to the choice of abortion, trivializes a serious issue.

More often than not, women who choose abortion are being coerced or pushed into it by a spouse, friend or parent. That choice is permanent for the child in the womb, and women suffer emotional and physical damage that may be permanent, as well. Because the woman isn’t aware yet that she is pregnant doesn’t negate the fact that she is already pregnant. Women have known throughout time that when they conceive, life has begun; now science proves it through routine ultrasound images.

I would agree that those who don’t eat pork shouldn’t try to make it illegal for the rest of the population. But more importantly, a quote that hopefully would shape Mr. Eckersley’s thinking and others who agree with abortion, either by promotion or silence, could be, “Already born. Doesn’t try to stop the birth of others.”

Food at feeders draws summer birds

Late summer and fall, and spring are times bird feeding enthusiasts change their bird feeding habit. In late August, the hummingbird feeders come down, or at least they should so as not to encourage hummers to stick around beyond their favorite season. There is usually plenty of early fall flower food for them. Later in the fall, when snowflakes flit on chilly breezes, the winter bird feeders seem to appear out

Keeping the rest of the winter menu in the bird feeding area may help the birds bridge this hard time.

Chickadees and nuthatches, along with other insect eating species, may make fewer visits to the feeders as summer approaches. But bird feeder enthusiasts of the human kind who keep the feeders supplied through the summer with the regular winter menu, and, perhaps, a few other tasty morsels, may be in for some surprises.

Surprisingly, in summer, hairy and downy woodpeckers have been known to dine on black oil sunflower seeds.

Chickadees continue to partake of sunflower seeds from the summer feeder; however, they tend to come in pairs rather than individually or in groups, as in winter. I am noticing that some birds are now much more territorial around the feeders.

There is one male junco that now keeps chasing other juncos out of “his” space. One time, he flew at another junco while still holding a piece of cracked corn in his mouth. Once in a while, it and another flew up a few inches off the ground, and hovered momentarily while having a face off in mid-air.

Attracting summer birds to feeders may become more exciting with the addition of different types of feeders and/ or by increasing the variety of locations. Many birds who like sunflower seeds may try out or prefer suspended net feeders or silo feeders. It is sometimes amusing to watch a bird try to

go for bits of cracked corn scattered on the ground and also pick up white millet. You might try putting millet or birdseed containing millet in a silo feeder for the summer.

Now, feeding birds in summer may attract other birds such as merlins and pygmy owls, who, of course, are not after food for birds but after birds for food. Then there is another sort — those that also come to feed on the food you have spread on the ground. In some areas, it could be pigeons but here it could be mourning doves or perhaps those prolific Eurasian collared doves. Then, lurking around your feeders you might find some wild turkeys or even the neighbour’s old white hen. Shrubs and plants bursting with spring colour

Not in flower but still looking great we have some evergreens, including the “Bruns” Serbian spruce. These little trees are prairie hardy and grow to 10 feet wide and 25 feet tall. Their foliage has a two-tone effect. Where the needles face up, they are a beautiful dark green and underneath they appear silver. Tall and narrow, they make a great vertical accent to a landscape. The dark green helps other smaller plants to stand out against their outline.

Last but not least there are a few plants related to the early flowering apricots. Russian almond (Prunus tenella) is about to flower. They have solid pink flower buds that open to a clear dark pink single flower. We also carry Prunus triloba “Multiplex”,

In 2012, FortisBC’s natural gas Energy Efficiency and Conservation programs helped residential, commercial and industrial customers save more than 360,000 gigajoules of natural gas, enough energy to heat some 4,100 homes in one year.

Renewable natural gas is a B.C.-made, carbon neutral energy source. The methane gas used to produce renewable natural gas comes from organic waste found at local landfills and farms. Instead of escaping into the atmosphere as a harmful greenhouse gas, it’s captured, cleaned and added to our pipeline, giving our customers a renewable energy source.

For about $5 more per month on their natural gas bill, customers can designate 10 per cent of their natural gas use as renewable. We’ll then inject an equivalent amount into our system.

Herbalist offering story for living book series

“Follow your passion; live your dream,” says herbalist and natural health practitioner Rachel Beck, who is the Creston and District Public Library’s living book for April, where she presents her story, “From City Chick to Country Hick”.

In the late 1980s, the West Coast government consultant envisioned a future of Porsches and penthouses when sudden health concerns drove her in search of natural solutions.

Who knew a passion for natural medicine and country living would be the result?

Ten years later, with a formal education in natural medicine, clinical herbalism and homeopathy under her belt, Beck followed her heart to paradise — the Creston Valley — where she now teaches herbal medicine and has a natural healthcare private practice. Beck is in high demand as a lecturer on natural medicine and the uses of herbs, at colleges and community

events. She writes articles on natural health-related topics for magazines, and produces medicinal herbal products, herbal cosmetics and soaps.

Turning a passion into a career was a long road but well worth the journey, says Beck.

“Not everyone is fortunate enough to make a living doing something they love, but I encourage anyone to try and make it happen.”

Savvy Sushi brings new taste to Creston

ushi lovers have known for years that there’s something missing on Creston menus — but that recently changed, when Savvy Sushi started Story and up last month. photos by Now, a halfdozen varietBrian Lawrence ies are made daily, offering a fresh sampling of the taste many have been craving.

“I’ve always liked feeding people — good food, good friends,” said owner Sandra Heykamp.

And when it comes to good food, she’s been hooked on sushi since the first time she tried it as a 19-year-old on a trip to Creston’s Japanese sister city, Kaminoho.

“Coming back to Creston, there isn’t any here,” she said.

“So I taught myself to make it.”

Rice, veggies and meat wrapped in seaweed sounds like it should be simple, but it requires a lot of practice to get it right; veggies, for example, need to be sliced just right so everything fits. Heykamp found tips and recipes online to help her get started, but

found that one aspect is key.

“Sushi needs to be made daily in order to remain fresh and have the rice remain soft,” she said. “It needs to be made and eaten the same day.”

Her kids and family loved it, but making the rolls is a lengthy process.

“With them always wanting it, and with it not being available, whenever we’re out of town, we always have sushi,” said Heykamp.

She first sold it at her parents’ Garden Bakery, which closed in 2006, making small batches of only 10 rolls at a time.

As she’s become more experienced, the process has gotten quicker, and can now make about 90 rolls in six hours.

Savvy Sushi runs from the Living Rock Café kitchen, and the product is sold at the 1607 Canyon St. location. Heykamp’s mom, Connie, joins her in making sushi rolls including veggie, prawn, teriyaki chicken and smoked salmon, as well as weekly specials.

About 20 per cent of the people she talks to haven’t tried sushi, Heykamp said.

Their reason?

“So many people think sushi is raw fish,” she said.

It isn’t — that would be sashimi, which isn’t limited to seafood — but the chicken and veggie rolls are good starters for the uninitiated.

To help make her sushi as appealing as possible, Heykamp makes it the Western way, with rice coating the outside of the nori, the seaweed wrap that holds it all together. That way, the nori isn’t the first thing diners taste.

“When it’s on the inside, that taste is more mellow,” she said.

For those who don’t like the taste of nori, Heykamp does special orders with soy wraps.

Speaking of special orders, Savvy Sushi offers “a new twist on ordering takeout,” Heykamp said — orders texted to 250-4029917 by 9:30 a.m. will be ready for pickup later that morning.

For anyone wishing to try everything Savvy Sushi has to offer, Heykamp is hosting An Evening of Indulgence on May 11, which features $20 all-youcan-eat sushi rolls, along with music by the Velle Weitman Trio.

Heykamp, who started Savvy Sushi with the help of Community Futures and Kootenay Employment Services, has been enjoying her job immensely. Not only does her schedule allow the single mother to spend time with her kids after school, she appreciates the chance to bring Creston up to the culinary level of other nearby towns.

“In Creston it’s special, but pretty much everywhere else you go, there’s a sushi restaurant,” she said. “It’s a healthy choice in fast food.”

The Grade 5/6 friendship group from CanyonLister Elementary School continues to collect pennies to fund water projects in developing countries.

Free the Children (a Craig Kielburger organization), in partnership with the Royal Bank of Canada, is a water project created to utilize each $25 bag of pennies to provide one person clean water for life. Youth across the country have been collecting pennies to support the dream for many youth living in developing countries.

Canyon students have raised over $225 so far, but they would like to raise even more before the April 26 deadline.

Judo club hosting Olympic bronze medallist

Antoine Valois-Fortier rose to world prominence by capturing a bronze medal in judo in the 2012 Olympic Games. This weekend he will be the star attraction at a threeday series of seminars for judo students at an event hosted by the Creston Judo Club.

“We have registrants coming from all around the Kootenays and into the Okanagan,” said club president Terry Rendek. “We are very fortunate to have a world-class Olympic medalist coming to our community.”

With his bronze medal win in the London games, Valois-Fortier became the first Canadian judoka to bring home a medal since 2000, and only the fifth-ever Canadian Olympic medalist in judo. He has won silver and bronze medals in the Pan American Games and also captured the Canadian national championship gold medal in 2010 after earning bronze medals in 2007 and 2008.

Valois-Fortier, 23, lives in Quebec City and is coached by Nicolas Gill, who won a silver medal in the 2000 Olympic Games.

Dressed in everything from parkas and toques to shorts and T-shirts, as soon as the field dries out they are there on Tuesday and Sunday afternoons honing their baseball skills in preparation for the regular season.

“There are over 30 players signed up for the two teams, but we are looking for more,” said Team 1 spokesman Woody Duncalfe. “Not everyone can make every game, so spares are needed to cover the roster.”

“If you are over 50 years old, male or female, you can play for the Coffin Dodgers,” said Team 2 spokesman Cliff Romano. “The great part of our teams is their commitment to practice and then retire to a player’s home for a review of problems from baseball, town, federal or provincial politics.”

Game nights are Thursday and Friday nights starting the last week of April and running to the first week in July. Playoffs follow. If you are interested in playing, call Woody at 250-428-7878 or Cliff at 250-428-2194 and join up for fun and exercise.

Emmett Maguire was born March 14, 1913 in county Fermanagh, Ireland.

Emmett was the third child of Francis and Rose (Burns) Maguire. Emmett immigrated to Canada with his parents and nine of his ten siblings in 1927 when he was 14 years old. The Maguire family settled in St. Brides, AB and Emmett met and married Anne Huget in 1941. Emmett and Anne purchased a farm in St. Brides, AB. Emmett worked long hours in the Àelds while Annie cooked for the crew, milked cows, fed pigs, and cared for their ÀYe children, Charlie, Jack, Jim, Marlene and Carrie.

In 19 7 the family moYed from St. Brides to St. Paul. It was in the town of St. Paul that they built the Àrst motel called The Lakeland. In 1968 they moYed to Creston, where they became fruit farmers and operated The Starlite Motel until 1979, after which time they farmed on another orchard in Erickson until retirement.

Emmett was an actiYe curler and card player; he enjoyed going to watch ball games at the area parks and joining his friends for coffee at the local diner.

Family was Yery important to Emmett and he took pleasure in spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Emmett and Anne enjoyed trips to the Yukon, Ireland and Hawaii; they camped with their truck and camper and had many fond memories of traYelling to Reno with family and friends. Emmett loYed baseball, and took a trip to Seattle with his son Jack and family, where he watched the Mariners play the Yankees and saw the legendary Yogi Berra.

Emmett also enjoyed watching hockey, golf, football, curling, horse races and reading.

When Anne was in poor health Emmett graciously stepped in and became a caregiYer. Emmett and Anne celebrated their 66th wedding anniYersary prior to Anne’s passing.

Emmett remained actiYe throughout his life, shoYelling snow and mowing the lawn well into his nineties. He broke his hip when he was 97, had surgery and recoYered fully. Emmett took his driYer’s test with an instructor that same year and passed with à ying colours. He decided at 99 to giYe up his license and purchased a scooter. He was able to continue to go to appointments, the bank and get groceries on his own.

Emmett liYed independently in his own home until his passing.

Emmett was a deYoted member of the Catholic Church throughout his life time. His faith was signiÀcant and supportiYe through many times of suffering. Emmett had a wonderful church family that was constant and unfailing.

Emmett will be fondly and foreYer oooremembered by his twinkling blue

eyes, beautiful head of hair, cleYer wit, games of cribbage, captiYating stories, jokes for all occasions, gift of song, as well as his ability to remember names, places and dates. Just being in his presence was an honour and priYilege.

Emmett was predeceased by his wife Annie (2007); daughter-in-law Joni (2005); son Jim (2007); daughter-inlaw Lynda (2008); daughter Carrie (2012); son-in-law Garth (2012); brothers .eYin, Gabriel, Jack, Micky, and Charlie; and sisters Kathleen, Gracie and Josie.

On April 16, 2013 Emmett left behind his sons Charlie (Debbie) and Jack (Rose Marie); daughter Marlene Billey (Marshall); grandchildren Dean and Corrine Maguire, Leanne and Russ Santos, Kelly Maguire, Chad and Amy Oko, Pamela and Brent Valer, Kory Oko and Shaun Maguire; greatgrandchildren Dakota, Clancy and Ryder Maguire, Tyler and Mia Santos, Caiden, Chantelle and Connor Oko, Colton and Courtney Valer; sisters Sheila and Fanchea and numerous nieces and nephews.

Emmett was Yery proud of his age and he celebrated his 100th Birthday on March 14, 2013. It was truly an amazing day full of family, friends, well wishes and song. The occasion could not haYe been possible without the wonderful members of the Catholic Women’s League and the Knights of Columbus. Thank you.

Emmett has a deYoted family, but he also had excellent neighbours and friends, his œfaYourites’ at the RBC, and The Family Practice. We regret that indiYidual names will not be mentioned as we do not want to unintentionally miss anyone, but you know who you are, we want you to know that we appreciate you and thank you for caring for Emmett. We would also like to thank Dr. LeRoux for your years as Emmett’s physician, as well as the nursing staff at the Creston Valley Hospital who went aboYe and beyond in their compassion and caring. Words cannot express the gratitude we haYe to those that called, Yisited and offered support. A special thank you to Morley and Candace and Emmett’s special friend Gilles.

Dennis Ernest Wolfe

January 9, 1953 ~ April 11, 2013 Dennis Ernest Wolfe, age 60, passed away April 11, 2013 after a courageous 16 month battle with cancer.

Dennis was born in Cranbrook, BC on January 9, 1953 to parents Jacob and Margot Wolfe. The family moved to Erickson, BC by the time he was one year old. Dennis’ school years were spent in Erickson Elementary and P.C.S.S. Upon completion of high school in 1971 Dennis worked cutting Christmas trees and also worked for the sawmill in Elko BC. Dennis married Judith Ann Phelps May 1, 1972. He then entered trade school to become a heavy duty mechanic, later becoming an auto mechanic. Dennis worked as a heavy duty mechanic for Greyhound Bus Lines in Calgary, AB. When returning to Creston in 1979 Dennis worked for a couple of different garages as an automotive mechanic holding an Inter-provincial ticket as well as becoming a licenced automotive mechanical inspector.

Dennis operated his own automotive repair business, D & J Auto, from 1985 to 1998. He then worked for Walt's Auto in Creston, BC. He participated in sports all his life, enjoying basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball and track and Àeld in high school. Dennis and his wife Judy sponsored D & J Auto’s softball team in the late 1980's through the early 1990's. Dennis enjoyed camping, Àshing and anything to do with the outdoors. A lover of animals, he had many pet cats and larger breed dogs throughout his life.

Dennis was predeceased by his wife Judy in March 2012; parents Jacob Wolfe in 1970 and Margot Wolfe in 1989; father-in-law Chester Phelps in 1987; sisterin-law Brenda Mikado in 2006; and nieces Elizabeth Wolfe in 1978 and Krystal Foxall in 2006.

Dennis is survived by his sister Wendy Sommerfeld of Erickson BC; brother Greg "Buddy" Wolfe of Calgary AB; mother-in-law Hazel Phelps (Bob) of Erickson BC; brothers-in-law Wayne Phelps of Salmo, BC and Russell Phelps (Cathy) of Edmonton, AB; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and a few very good friends.

Dennis was known for being a gentle man with a compassionate nature. He was well liked and respected in the community and will be greatly missed.

Ashes will be interred in the Bella Columbarium at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Erickson, BC at a private family service at a later date.

Victoria bluegrass band playing in Creston SUBMITTED

The Clover Point Drifters are a bluegrass band from Victoria, visiting the Snoring Sasquatch on May 2. Their repertoire consists primarily of traditional bluegrass songs, with a sprinkling of country, folk, blues and pop melodies served up in the bluegrass style. Their songs feature close heartfelt duet and trio harmonies, backed by strong banjo, dobro and mandolin accompaniment.

“These fellows — some sporting ball-caps, some with ZZ Top-style beards — are able to

nail the high, lonesome harmonies that makes this style of music so compelling,” said Adrian Chamberlain in the Victoria Times-Colonist. “And the players are good, especially banjo-man Mike Kraft and slide-guitarist Larry Stevens. In an un-self-conscious way, the quintet captures the authenticity and honesty of old-time bluegrass music. Their sound is also flavoured with echoes of Hank Williams and Willie Nelson (the latter mainly conjured up by Stevens’s singing). The Clover Point Drifters also play original tunes in a contemporary folk style. All of this, combined with a jocular stage manner, made for a great opening set.”

The band has been active since January 2000, but the members each have a decades-long love affair with bluegrass music.

Mike Kraft (banjo, harmony, vocals) is one of Victoria’s secrets that don’t involve underwear. Besides being one fine banjo player, he also plays guitar in a variety of country, rockabilly and blues bands — basically, any band that wants a real musician tries to snag him.

Kraft endured painful back surgery in 2003, but now that his aura has been properly aligned, he has re-established his rapport with the universe, and he

shares his humour and stock picks. He is a former member of the Chance Brothers.

Larry Stevens (resophonic guitar, lead vocals) has a gift for singing the country song, good times and bad, love and loss, the past and even further past.

For many years, he lived in Vancouver and played the dobro with several bands, including the New Nash Ramblers, who were the BC Country Music Association bluegrass band of the year. In 1999, he drifted over to Victoria, where his rich warm voice has become a welcoming and familiar sound.

George Robinson (bass, lead vocals) has the longest pedigree in the band, having played bluegrass bass since 1977. By good luck and happenstance that year, he managed to obtain ownership of Duke Neilson’s bass (Neilson played for many years with Don Messer and the Islanders, a Canadian musical institution if ever there was one). Being thus equipped, Robinson spent the next three years on the road with the New Silver Tone Rangers, with only two weeks off. Talk about cutting your teeth! Thanks to the unforgiving march of time, he has now been playing this bass longer than Neilson did. Other former bands

include Every Day Street Band, Cedar Hill and Back at the Ranch.

Dan Parker (mandolin, lead vocals) drifted west from Ontario following a successful attempt to attain a higher education. He is one of those annoying people who, if given some new musical instrument, will spend almost no time at all making it sound like they have played it for years. And then he’ll show you the tune he has just written for it. If that isn’t enough, he also built his own guitar. Parker’s spirited and inventive solos complement the plodding efficacy of the old farts.

Alan Law (guitar, lead and harmony vocals) does most of the arranging and supplies the beverages for rehearsals.

That makes him the band leader. He is strictly a rhythm guitarist — “I do not play any notes” — but his drive, passion and stamina are second to none. In a band of baritones, he enjoys the role of tenor singer, and he loves singing harmony more than almost anything you can imagine. Previous combos include playing with Robinson in Back at the Ranch and with Kraft in the Chance Brothers.

Tickets are $12 in advance, available at Black Bear Books and Kingfisher Used Books, and $15 at the door, which opens at 7 p.m.; the show starts at 8.

Regional District of Central Kootenay Area A director Garry Jackman has announced that his area has recommended the distribution of $31,200 in Columbia Basin Trust funding under the Community Initiatives Program.

Jackman said total requests were about five times more than Area A had available to distribute.

Pending final approval by the RDCK, the following non-profit groups will receive funds: Riondel Recreation Society, $10,000; Eastshore Alliance Supporting the Early Years (playground), $2,300; Food Roots (community garden), $2,600; Crawford Bay Elementary Secondary School, $1,200; Boswell (fitness equipment), $1,000; Boswell (carpet bowling), $700; North Kootenay Lake Community Services Society (youth counseling), $1,300; Spay Neuter Animal Program, $900; Creston and District Historical and Museum Society, $1,100; Creston Rod and Gun Club, $800; Creston Valley Food Action Coalition (farmers’ market), $800; CVFAC (Harvest Share), $600; Creston Valley Search and Rescue: $1,000; Kuskanook Harbour Society, $6,900.

Creston town council has recommended the distribution of its Community Initiatives Program funds after deliberations at the April 16 regular meeting.

Forty community groups will share $75,298 from Columbia Basin Trust, pending final approval by the Regional District of Central Kootenay board, which is responsible for the distribution of funds.

Representatives from 15 of the 48 applicants were each given two minutes to verbally address their requests, which were made in writing previously.

To allocate the funds, Mayor Ron Toyota and the five councilors in attendance (Coun. Wesly Graham was absent) each called out their recommendation on each group’s application, with those numbers being entered on a spreadsheet that was projected onto a screen. The spreadsheet calculated the average of the recommendations and kept a running total of the figures.

When the applicants’ list had been gone through, three councilors had voted to allocate more than the funds available and were directed to reduce their recommendations to the available amount.

The final list of funds recommended follows:
