At the museum

CATHY ENGLISH HAS SPENT 30 YEARS AS CURATOR OF THE REVELSTOKE MUSEUM & ARCHIVES. WE ASKED HER WHAT HER FIVE FAVORITE ARTIFACTS IN THE MUSEUM ARE. HERE’S WHAT SHE SAID:

Men’s Hat. This delightful little derby hat came from J.G. MacDonald’s Fit Reform Wardrobe, a men’s clothing store where Little Caesar’s Pizza is now located. The hat was probably sold from the store around the year 1910. It was donated by a man whose father had acquired it much later, probably in the 1950s. The donor’s father owned a vintage Model T Ford, and wore the hat when he drove the car in local parades and car shows.

Queen Victoria Diamond Jubilee Chair. Queen Victoria celebrated her Diamond Jubilee as Queen in 1897, and this commemorative piece was made for the occasion. It stood for years in the Holten Home at the top of the hill on First Street. Owner Charles Holten had the home built in 1897 for his bride, Lyda Edwards. The home is currently operating as Mustang Bed & Breakfast. The chair appears in an interior photograph of the home.

Regulator Clock. This beautiful clock came from the jewellery store that was built on Mackenzie Avenue in 1904 and that now houses Carrie’s Home Cafe. The store became Bews Jewellery in 1911 and, later, J.K. English and Sons Jewellery. This clock was the one that was used to set all of the other clocks and watches in the store. Railway workers came in on a regular basis to have their watches checked to ensure that they kept accurate time.

This clock has sentimental value to me, as my husband’s parents had this in their home for many years until it was donated to the museum.

Fur Press. The large fur press in the museum was made for local men’s clothing merchant F.B. Wells around 1911. Wells bought furs from local trappers and sent them to furriers in Montreal and Winnipeg. The press was used to bale the furs for shipping. The museum also has two ledgers belonging to F.B. Wells that indicate who he purchased furs from, what species of animal they were, and how much he paid for them. An interesting notation from April 1914 shows he paid more than $600 to one trapper for about 100 marten furs. This would have been the equivalent of half a years’ wage.

Tree blaze. Revelstoke resident Cal Upper found a carved tree on the west side of the Columbia River, just south of where the Revelstoke dam is now. It reads: “SS Forty-nine delayed in consequence of high water. July 4, ’66.” The year ’66 refers to 1866, when the steamboat Forty-nine made trips from Washington State to the Big Bend mines. The blaze was most likely carved when the crew of the ship was forced to stay put due to treacherous high water in the Revelstoke Canyon. The carving is quite elaborate and would have taken some time to complete.

Design matters Revelstoke digital designer and artist Carly Moran expands her portfolio into acrylics

“People aren’t reading a lot of text anymore,” says Revelstoke graphic and fine artist Carly Moran.

OK, I’ll keep this short!

What she meant was a proliferation of media sources and platforms means everyone’s got to work harder to reach out and attract valuable and fickle eyeball time. One way is through effective design.

“Good design matters,” Moran tells me in an interview at Art First! gallery, where she exhibits her work.

“Good design always communicates a message.”

The Peterborough, Ontario, native has spent the past four years in Revelstoke building up her resume, contacts and business to a point where she’s ready to launch her online design business.

She’s worked on several projects you may know, including the Flowt Bikes & Skis jersey, the Hillcrest Hotel dining guide, the Sol Mountain Touring graphics package and she served on the design team for the Revelstoke Museum’s First Tracks: The History of Skiing in Revelstoke.

Moran’s education background

includes graphic design at BCIT, Canadian Studies at Trent University and studies at the Ontario College of Art & Design.

She’s busy building a portfolio as a web designer, including projects outside of Revelstoke. (“I think it’s an advantage,” she joked of living in a geographically isolated mountain town. “They know you’re far away; I don’t need to be there.”)

Moran is about to finalize and launch her new website for Media Chefs (mediachefs.com), her webbased design business.

She’s also excited to get back to her roots outside of digital design.

She’s produced an acrylic series for Art First!, including a group show last year. Look for her upcoming bicycle series.

On firm ground Terra Park and Robert Jay build up Terra Firma organic farm just outside Revelstoke

I

t’s mid-April and the first signs of growth are sprouting from the soil at Terra Firma. Twigs of garlic are poking out from the ground and inside a greenhouse, the first leaves of rows of salad greens are beginning to show themselves. Transplants from an indoor nursery have been brought outside, ready to be planted. Off to the side, a brood of chickens is pecking away inside their pen.

“I wish we had more to show you,” Robert Jay, who along with his wife Terra Park runs Terra Firm, tells me.

It won’t be long before Terra Firma will be in full bloom – a sea of greens stretching across an acre of land just south of Revelstoke on the west shores of the Columbia River.

Terra Firma started five years ago as a result of Park and Jay’s ever expanding garden. They both come from farming backgrounds – Park’s father grew up as a farmer in Alberta and Jay’s family operates some orchards in the Okanagan.

The garden they grew together kept expanding and eventually they bought the property where Terra Firma is situated to grow even more.

“It evolved over time,” said Park. “We were both passionate about gardening and it got bigger and bigger every year until we had a surplus to sell.”

Inside a large barn on their property there’s row upon row of plants sprouting up under artificial lights to get a jump start on growing. Once it starts to get sunny in the spring, they spread ginseng tarps across their fields to melt the snow faster. Once it warms up outside, they start planting outside and inside their greenhouse. “We’re planting more everyday outside and everything else is started indoors,” said Park.

The farm is constant work for the two of them – planting, re-planting, weeding, dealing with pests and, of course, harvesting. The big harvest day is on Friday, the day before the farmers market when they’ll spend from early morning until night fall picking and packing food. They’ll keep harvesting until the heavy snows come at the start of winter.

The results of their work are on display every Saturday at the farmers market in Grizzly Plaza. Their stall is the first you’ll see when approaching via First Street – selling transplants early in the spring and then a plethora of produce later on as their own harvest matures.

They also sell produce through Mountain Goodness and occasionally to local restaurants.

Transplants are also a big seller for them, representing about 30 per cent of their business in only a short part of their season.

Eventually, Park and Jay want to double the size of Terra Firma to two acres. They also want to run a nursery at the farm and do plant sales directly from the property; and host school groups and other events.

Meanwhile, they’ve successfully turned a passion and lifestyle into a business. “We both love doing it,” said Park. “We just wanted to wake up every morning and this be our job.”

Exploring local trails Every week Brent Strand leads the Pedal and Pint ride around Revelstoke. Often, he’ll take you on trails you never knew existed

A

nd off we set into Centennial Park - 26 riders strong – through easy, flowy trails along the Greenbelt; across the Illecillewaet Bridge, past the Selkirk Saddle Club, up a steep climb to Arrow Heights, across Airport Way, into a network of trails in the woods around Williamson’s Lake. We stopped at the beach for a breather, and then ducked back into the woods, up to Camozzi Road to some trails that took us down to the Illecillewaet River, then over to maze of trails on CPR Hill where we put our headlamps on, and finally to the River City Pub, where beer and nachos awaited.

It was a mix of rolling single track, easy double-track; steep technical downhill sections and only a little bit of pavement – all within the city boundaries. It was Thursday – the night of the weekly Pedal and Pint ride, when upwards of 30 people meet up every week to explore Revelstoke’s singletrack network – both the official and unofficial trails.

The first pedal and pint ride was eight years ago when Brent Strand decided to start up a group ride. Since then, the rides have gone every Thursday, rain, snow or shine. He’s been stood up twice, but he still went for a ride and stopped off at the River City Pub afterwards. He still leads the rides, choosing the routes and keeping everyone together. He’s loud and enthusiastic, and a passionate mountain biker. He knows every trail in the area, and more.

A typical pedal and pint ride involves goes 20-25 kilometres, and involves two to three hours of riding. The rides all start outside the community centre and branch out from there.

The rides have a reputation of being tough, and to say otherwise would be lying. Still, while the pace can be fast, stops are frequent and no one is left behind. That’s the first rule of pedal and pint (the second and third are to pay for what you eat and drink, and tip the waitress well).

Some rides go up to the 5K loop in Mount Revelstoke National Park, with some laps of the CPR Hill trails thrown

in for good measure. Others times, it’s off to Mt Macpherson to hit up the great trail network there. Once we biked through the Big Eddy to an old dirt bike trail that connected us to the Boulder Mountain downhill trails and a couple of fast descents.

Then there was Relentless, which more than lived up to its name. We biked out south of town along Airport Way turning off onto what looked like an old logging road that gradually faded into grown over single track. The narrower it got, the steeper it was until finally it plateaued and we had a nice, flowy descent that linked up with the Mt. Cartier trail. We biked to the viewpoint overlooking the Upper Arrow Lake, turned around and ripped back down to the road. It was a trail that isn’t for the faint of hard, but is part of the beauty of the rides – they’re a chance to explore new trails, or see old ones in a new light, and a chance to push yourself The most people to show up for a ride is 37. Last summer, about 30 people showed up to bike the epic Sale Mountain downhill trail. By the time the shuttles delivered everyone to the top, it had started raining. Still, down everyone went.

Afterwards, while waiting for the stragglers to arrive, everyone hung around Martha Creek Provincial Park drinking beers next to an illuminated red mountain bike. It was the closest thing to a fire available on that cold night. Two visitors from Canmore said we were nuts. They were probably right.

Last year the crew set a new record by pedaling for 37 weeks straight. The final ride was in December with snow on the ground. Still, a few hardy souls showed up, pedaled from one end of CPR Hill to the other and then went to the bar.

Pedal and Pint rides leave from outside the community centre every Thursday at 6 p.m. Bring a headlamp, because you migh be biking until it’s dark.

Our story started 9 years ago ...

I had been working at the Quebec Ice Hotel for 2 years, when Olivier appeared – fresh from his cooking class and 21 years old. I was 19 and I, of course, got seduced by incredible Olivier.

So here we go, three months after Olivier started working, we left Quebec for an incredible adventure.

We were sailing to France – the trip of our lives.

Three months of food discovery. The Caribbean to Portugal, Spain and then France.

We spent quite a while in the Chamonix area and that’s where our recipe has been inspired from. Finally coming back from our sailing trip, that unfortunately had to end, we moved to Revelstoke. We worked at the Woolsey Creek for a few years and finally opened up our own business. Our dream job! We get to create real food, with real ingredients with our hands & heart. There is our story.

We are loving Revelstoke and not planning on leaving for a while.
