The City of Richmond’s Partners for Beautification program offers residents the opportunity to become actively involved in the beautification of their community by adopting public spaces and keeping them clean and green.

There is no better way to enjoy the outdoors than a walk in one of Richmond’s parks. Here are a few of Richmond’s most special places to visit this spring:

Richmond Nature Park

1. Britannia Heritage Shipyard Park is a national historic site in Steveston Village. The park offers spectacular views of historic cannery and shipyard buildings and features an interpretive program for you to experience Richmond’s maritime past.

Spring is the perfect time to visit the Richmond Nature Park. Enjoy the blooming flowers in the Wildlife Garden, the bird identification and feeding station and the buzzing new colony of honeybees in the Nature House. Stretch your legs on a walk through the park or enjoy a picnic. Drop in to the Nature House to pick up your first clue for a scavenger hunt through the park.

2. Garden City Community Park is the jewel of the City Centre, featuring an award-winning adventure play environment, an arboretum of specimen trees from around the Pacific Rim and walking trails that wind around the beautiful lake.

Hummingbird Homecoming

3. Garry Point Park is Richmond’s premier waterfront destination.

Located west of historic Steveston Village, the park offers beach and waterfront access with panoramic views of the Fraser River Estuary and the Gulf Islands.

4. Middle Arm Waterfront Park stretches along the Middle Arm Dyke Trail from the Richmond Olympic Oval to the Cambie Pump Station, featuring piers, an amphitheatre, public art, and multiple play areas.

5. Terra Nova Rural Park and Natural Area is a great place to go bird-watching or a scenic stroll.

The park features boardwalks, trails, heritage buildings, community gardens and more.

Battle of the Birds Since September, visitors to the Nature Park have enjoyed watching Anna’s Hummingbirds—colourful new winter residents in Richmond. On March 21 that all changed when Rufous Hummingbirds arrived for the summer and promptly chased the Anna’s away.

On Sunday, April 21, between 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., you can drop in to the Richmond Nature Park to meet these tiny yet pugnacious summer birds and discover their fascinating fast-paced life. You’re guaranteed to see Rufous Hummingbirds but if you’re lucky, you might spot an Anna’s hiding in the bushes while waiting for a turn at the feeders.

Pre-registration is not required.

Admission is by donation.

Nature Park

Fraser River Boat Cruises

Take a rare cruise along the South Arm of the mighty Fraser River and discover Richmond from a different perspective.

Sign up for one of two boat cruises led by maritime history, marine biology and natural history experts on Sunday, April 28 or Wednesday, May 8 from 9:30 a.m.–1:00 p.m.

Departing from Steveston’s Britannia Heritage Shipyard, these special guided tours pass by many of the 17 islands that make up Richmond.

Highlights of the tour at this time of year include cruising past the float home communities at Canoe Pass and watching the sea lions on the rocks at the mouth of the Fraser River.

Each boat holds 21 guests with plenty of room to walk around and view the sites from all sides, including an open back and upper viewing deck.

The covered inside cabin offers seats for everyone with excellent viewing opportunities.
