Deceased named in golf course death Submitted

Ms. Blais was found in the same retaining pond by an RCMP Underwater Recovery team on the morning of April 15. The pond is about three metres deep.

The BC Coroners Service and RCMP continue to investigate this death.

Search and Rescue teams from Cranbrook, Fernie, Creston and Sparwood assisted in the search. Victim Services has been assisting the family, friends and coworkers with this tragic loss.

Residents in and around Kimberley are mourning the loss of an individual known for her kind words and actions.

The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the identity of a woman who was found deceased in a golf course retaining pond in Kimberley on April 15, 2013.

She was Deborah Marie Blais, aged 55, a resident of Kimberley.

Friends and family of Ms. Blais began a search for her on the afternoon of April 14 after she had not returned home from a walk and the family dog had been rescued from a retaining pond on the Bootleg Gap Golf Course in Kimberley. When she was not found, the RCMP and Search-and-Rescue became involved 2.8125” x 3”

The proposal to create a new park in the Cherry Creek Falls area is one step closer to reality after Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett announced the Province’s support to have the mineral rights to the land in question returned to the Crown.

“This is a significant step forward,” says RDEK Electoral Area E Director Jane Walter. “I would like to thank ev-

eryone who has worked on this project including the MLA Bennett, RDEK Staff, the owners of the Mineral Claim who have been so cooperative, the Ministries of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations and Energy and Mines, the community of Meadowbrook and all those who donated funds.”

The Meadowbrook Community Associa-

tion has raised the funds to purchase the 188 hectare Mineral Claim and the process to help preserve the area is with the Ministry of Energy and Mines.

“There are still a number of applications that we will have to go through, but the desire by the Province to see this process continue to move forward has been a critical step,” adds Walter. If the cur-

rent applications are approved, the RDEK will apply to the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations for tenure over 16 hectares of Crown land in the vicinity of the falls for Regional Park purposes.

Meet the Introduction to Trades grads Recently, participants in an Introduction to Trades program at College of the Rockies celebrated their graduation. Shaylene Osborne, Darren Williams, Jesse Thomas and Ashley Casimer all successfully completed the 11week program.

The training, a partnership between College of the Rockies and the British Columbia Aboriginal Mine Training Association (BC AMTA) was part of BC AMTA’s mandate to recruit, assess and train Aboriginal candidates for careers in the mining sector.

Participants were given the opportunity to spend two weeks in each of five trades – Carpentry, Electrical, Heavy Duty/Automotive Mechanics, Welding and Millwright where they were able to benefit from practical knowledge and experience. Students also received training in first

A simple way to give your dog some space

by Debbie Anhorn Recently I was in Just 4 pets in Cranbrook, and I noticed a poster for the Yellow Dog Project. I asked the lady behind the counter what it was all about. She explained that some dogs need space and that they don’t always like to be approached by other dogs. If you put a yellow ribbon on your dog’s leash, other dog owners will know that your dog needs some space. I thought it was an absolutely great idea. A week later I received a newsletter from, The Playpen, in Cranbrook and the owner Karla, was promoting the Yellow Dog Project and offering yellow ribbons for anyone who would like them. That got me thinking how great it would be to have that concept in the city of Kimber-

ley and area. I contacted Karla and asked her if I could become involved as I have a dog that needs some space. Karla asked me if I would be interested in telling my story.

My story is not unique. My story could be a lot of other dog owner’s story as well.

My husband and I got a puppy. We socialized our puppy in all different types of situations.

As he started to mature, for whatever reason, I still can’t figure that out, he became picky about other dogs and whom he played with. He doesn’t like all other dogs and he becomes nervous and goes on the defensive.

If another dog that is off leash, runs up to him and into his face, it will often trigger a confrontation, which is something I believe no dog owner wants. It’s not that he’s

aggressive; he’s actually very sweet. He does have other playmates, but he just needs that initial space. It would be really helpful if dog owners, who see a person walking a dog with a yellow ribbon, leash up their dog and then either walk by, or stop and talk to us. When you give our dog some time to adjust, keeping that space, it allows him to smell and see the other dog. Sometimes with a rescue dog that’s all it really takes to help that dog become more social. I have heard a lot of stories from different dog owners who have the same issues as mine. I know for me, I really appreciate dog owners who make that effort to leash up their dog. Your dog might be friendly, but maybe the dog that is on the other leash isn’t. I really hope the dog owner’s in Kimberley will get on board with the Yellow Dog Project so everyone can enjoy their walks with

OBITUARY

Blais, Deborah Marie 1957 - 2013 Born in Gilbert Plains Manitoba, October 25 1957, Debbie passed away suddenly in Marysville, BC on April 14, 2013 at the age of 55. Her parents, John and Stella Choma, raised three girls on their farm. Debbie, the youngest, loved the farm and many times would tell stories about frost on the inside walls of the old farmhouse, frozen hair, no plumbing and the last of the weekly bath water. When all of us were riding buses to school she rode a horse to their one room schoolhouse. Debbie was born of Ukrainian heritage and would display her pride and love any chance she could. She loved her family and would cherish any social gatherings with her uncles, aunts and cousins.

Debbie had another family, her friends, all whom she loved dearly. She involved herself in the community participating wherever she could. Her singing career began in Gilbert Plains at an early age when she performed with a band called “ Five and a Half ”, she being the half. She was an accomplished singer who loved performing with the Steppin’ Out Dancers and all who participated in “Lillith Affair”.

She could also be found on the Nordic Trails with her traditional classic skis, on the golf course, in hockey rinks and at recitals and concerts of all types. She enjoyed hiking, camping and living the moment within the beauty of our mountains. She never turned down a cold beer and loved sitting on the deck sipping wine with her family and friends as the sun went down behind the hills.

Debbie was of positive spirit, the kindest most forgiving soul. Even as she battled cancer this past year, she displayed courage and optimism all of us could learn from.

She worked at the J.F. Hazard and then at the Kimberley Medical Clinic for 32 years. She always considered the “Docs” and staff her family, and treated all who walked through the doors with respect and dignity.

She was the proudest mother and grandmother of her two boys, three step children, and one grandson. Debbie was predeceased by her parents, John and Stella Choma. She leaves to mourn her loving husband Adrian, her children Derek Carter Stoughton of McKinney, Texas, Scott Tyler Stoughton (Erica) of Austin, Texas, Shawn Blais (Trina) and grandson Dawson Blais, Carrie Blais (Shawn) of Kimberley, Jimmy Blais of Vancouver, sisters Shirley (Phil) of Winnipeg and Evelynne (Billy) of Gilbert Plains. She also leaves behind many uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews, and all her many friends.

A celebration of life will be held at the McKim School Auditorium Saturday April 20 at 2 pm.

In the last 50 years, immunization has saved more lives in Canada than any other health intervention. April 20 to 27 is National Immunization Awareness Week, and this year, Interior Health would like to remind you that we can all play an important role in stopping the spread of vaccine preventable diseases.

When most people are vaccinated for a disease, it makes it harder for that disease to spread from person to person. When people stop immunizing, diseases come back and that becomes especially risky for those who may be more vulnerable like young children, seniors, and people with certain medical conditions or compromised immune systems.

“This year we saw an increase in cases of whooping cough (pertussis) here in Interior Health and some parts of our province experienced significant outbreaks,” said Dr. Rob Parker, Medical Health Officer with Interior Health. “This is an important reminder that we need to keep our immunization rates high to help prevent outbreaks like this from happening.”

“Vaccines don’t just prevent diseases; they also reduce the possibility of serious complications or death associated with vaccine-preventable diseases. Mumps, measles, and rubella viruses can lead to potentially deadly complications like pneumonia and encephalitis.

Whooping cough (pertussis) and meningitis C bacteria can cause brain damage or death,” explained Dr. Parker.

Factual vaccine information can help people make informed decisions about their health and the health of their families. It is very important to make sure you get vaccine information from reliable and credible sources. The ImmunizeBC website www. immunizeBC.ca or your local public health nurse are excellent sources of information about vaccinations.

Waking Up Your Garden

Probably not too many gardeners had snow on their weather wishlist for the past week, but the last throes of winter are short-lived and now is the time to get your yard and garden ready for the growing season that is just around the corner.

Your first look will have to go to the quality of your soil. Unfortunately you cannot determine how rich or deficient in nutrients your soil is, just by looking at it. To really understand your soil and create good growing conditions for your plants you need to test it.

There are simple and inexpensive soil testing kits available at your local garden centre that will give you quick and relatively accurate approximate results. This test can tell you whether your soil is high or low in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium, as well as the pH of the soil. The pH tells you whether your soil is acidic – also referred to as ‘sour’ - or alkaline – also called ‘sweet’ soil.

If you need a higher level of accuracy than the home soil test can provide, you can get your soil sample sent to a laboratory to be tested. The lab results will give you more information, also indicating salt levels, the amount of organic matter and micro-nutrients available in the soil.

Once you know what’s in your soil and what it may be lacking, it will make it easier to decide what fertilizer or amendment your garden may need. If for example your soil is high in nitrogen, you will want to look for a fertilizer that has little or no nitrogen in it but more of the nutrients your garden may be lacking.

Before planting, it is also important to prepare the ground by digging or cultivating the soil. This helps to aerate the soil, exposes pests to predators and gives you the chance to add any necessary amendments. Some people might use a rototiller to cultivate their garden soil, but a shovel or spade will do. Start by removing one spade full of soil and then filling the hole with soil from the adjoining spot. Continue to dig and fill, working your way up and down your garden.

If your ground has been turned properly, most annual weeds will be killed. When their roots are removed in the cultivating process, perennial weeds are prevented from spreading. After your soil has been dug, break down any large clumps of soil. You can then apply fertilizer or manures and rake them in.

If you are planning on planting or sowing seed in the area you will need to break down your soil to a fine, crumbly structure and remove any large weeds that were missed and as many of the roots as you can or they will re-grow.

A sturdy shovel or spade is essential for gardening and there are some other basic gardening tools you will need throughout the season, including a fork, a rake and some hand tools. A garden fork is invaluable for digging and lifting. Choose one with a D-shaped handle - it will be much stronger and easier to work with.

A rake is used often and helpful when making a new garden. A rake with a solid head is stronger than a rake with a riveted head. When it comes to hand tools you will want a hand cultivator, for breaking up the ground after digging and for weeding between rows of small plants.

Hand trowels are indispensable, you use them for planting, but they are great for weeding and filling containers.

As you tackle bigger and bigger projects, your array of tools is likely to grow as well and become more specialized. Make sure you buy good quality, well designed tools, they can make gardening so much easier.

Here’s how it works: Place items at the curb before 9:00am. E.g. books, household items, tools, furniture, etc. Place a Trash 2 Treasure sign on the items you are giving away. Take part in ‘Trash 2 Treasure’ by walking around the neighbourhood, visiting with your neighbours and finding useful treasures. At the end of the day, bring any uncollected gems back to your home or deliver to a charity of your choice.

Respect other people’s property; don’t walk on people’s lawns and gardens. Don’t discard previously picked-up treasures on another person’s lawn or anywhere other than your own home. Let’s celebrate Earth Day by using our landfill responsibly.

The City of Cranbrook’s annual Pitch-In campaign is under way for another year and runs from April 21st – 27th! All of the schools within the City of Cranbrook have been actively involved in cleaning up their school yards each year with loads of Pitch-In bags being collected. Several local clubs, organizations, Chamber members, Downtown Business Association and other citizens have been supportive of this program.

Teck Coal required to submit plan to address contaminants in watershed Submitted

Environment Minister Terry Lake issued a ministerial order recently to Teck Coal Limited, requiring the company to submit a plan to address the high levels of selenium and other contaminants in the Elk Valley watershed as a result of decades of coal mining activity.

This order covers the Elk Valley watershed, including Fording River and Lake Koocanusa, and establishes a process for Teck to take immediate steps to stabilize and reverse water quality concentrations for selenium, cadmium, nitrate and sulphate.

“This order very clearly articulates my expectations regarding environmental management in the Elk Valley. The Province takes the issue of selenium and other contaminants in our water very seriously and, by way of this order, government is taking action to invoke immediate change in the region’s water quality trends so we can ensure the environment, wildlife, and the health of British Columbians is protected, ” said Terry Lake, Minister of Environment.

The order will result in a plan to identify long-term concentration targets including: * Current contaminant concentrations. * Current and emerging economically achievable treatment technologies. * Sustained balance of environmental, economic and social costs and benefits. * Current and emerging science regarding the fate and effects of contaminants.

The order defines specific environmental objectives and outcomes such as protection of aquatic ecosystems, protection of human health and protection of groundwater. Teck will develop the plan in collaboration with stakeholders, First Nations and various levels of government.

Under Section 89 of the Environmental Management Act, Teck is responsible for preparing and submitting terms of reference for approval to the Minister of Environment within 90

days. Teck must then complete the plan and submit it for the minister’s approval within 12 months of the terms of reference being approved.

A technical advisory committee to guide development of the plan is also established by the order. Representatives will be invited to participate from each

Pitch-In Canada Week is a community clean-up and beautification campaign that benefits our community as a whole. CURRIE, Sheila Elaine (nee Sparks) October 11, 1948 - April 11, 2013 It is with deep sorrow that we announce the loss of Sheila. She passed away peacefully with her daughters Melissa and Merina Currie by her side in Kimberley, B.C. She will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her daughters, (father Roger Currie), her mother Mary Williams, sister Shannon Fraser (husband Kenny), niece Kara Sparks (c.l. husband Dave), nephews Cale Robinson and Robin Hunter, friend Chuck Bucknell, and many friends and relatives.

Sheila was predeceased by her father Cecil Sparks, sister Debi Sparks, brother-in-law Darryl Robinson, and grandparents Ethel & Sam Boyes, and Bertha & Bert Sparks.

A celebration of Sheila's life will be held on May 11, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Carrot Creek, Alberta, Community Hall, followed with a burial in Carrot Creek Cemetery, as Sheila wished to be beside her Dad. Norman Lyle Eidsness "Ike" 1926-2013 Norman passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on Monday, April 15, 2013 at 86 1/2 years.

He was born September 12, 1926 at Plentywood, Montana (it being the closest hospital to his home in Gladmar, Sask). He received the nickname of "Ike" in high school during the Eisenhower years.

He started line work with Manitoba Power Commission, then in Victoria with Hume & Rumble Construction. In 1964 he started with B.C. Hydro in Golden and in 1970 moved to Cranbrook.

Ike was a 60-year member of IBEW, a long-time member of the Cranbrook Golf Club and the Canadian Legion, and a member of the Cranbrook Curling Club and the B.C. Hydro Power Pioneers.

Before his health issues, he enjoyed golf, fly fishing, camping, playing blackjack, with many trips to Reno and Vegas, playing pool with his golf buddies, family get-togethers, playing his banjo-ukulele at sing-songs with friends. He was also passionate about his vegetable garden and was a "garden guru" for his granddaughter Tamara when she took over.

The family is extremely grateful to daughter-in-law, Colleen for her tireless and compassionate care for him during his last days. We also wish to thank Dr. Van Rietschoten for his dedication and care.

Ike is survived by his wife Eileen of 59 1/2 years, son Mitch (Colleen) of Cranbrook, daughter Lauren Jinjoe (Dale) of Murrieta, California and son Glenn (Marnie) of Vancouver; his sister Shirley Brizan of Burnaby. He was proud of his five granddaughters, Janine, Tamara (Steve and Danny Mercandelli), Brooke (Ronny) Belkin, Shannon, Ashley; and newborn great grandson, Cohen Belkin. He was predeceased by his parents, Birger and Thenora Eidsness.

A Celebration of Ike's life will be held at McPherson Funeral Home in Cranbrook on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at 1:00 pm.

If friends so desire, memorial donations in Ike's honour may be made to the charity of their choice.

My dear friend Charlotte Smith passed away April 12, 2013 in North Bay, ON with her boys and sister by her side. Charlotte owned and operated “Cherished Pets” before she moved to North Bay, ON in 2012.

Gerardo Santoro 1935 - 2013 It is with deep sorrow that the family of Gerardo Santoro announces his passing on Thursday, April 11, 2013 in Cranbrook at 78 years of age.

Gerardo was born on April 5, 1935 in Ruvo Del Monte, Italy. Gerardo is survived by his son Vito "Frank" (Stacey) Santoro; daughter Rita (Carlo) Romeo; grandchildren Joseph, Jessica, Morgan and Mackenzie; sisters: Rosa Maruggi of Toronto, Ontario, and Maria Santoro of Rapolla, Italy; brothers: John Santoro of Cranbrook, B.C., Joe Santoro of Niagra On The Lake, Ontario, and Tony Santoro of Sicily, Italy, as well as many other nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving wife Gilda, his mother Margherita Mungiello, father Vito Santoro, brothers Michele Santoro and Frank Santoro.

A visitation for Gerardo was held at McPherson Funeral Home in Cranbrook on Monday, April 15, 2013 from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm. His funeral mass was held at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Cranbrook on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at 10:00 am. He was Interred in the Westlawn Cemetery Mausoleum.

OBITUARY Yosh Nakahara 1933 - 2013 With grieving hearts, the family of Yosh Nakahara sadly announce his passing on Wednesday, April 10, 2013.

Yosh was born in Vancouver, BC on August 7, 1933. He came to Cranbrook as a boy. He left as a young man to serve overseas in the Canadian Peace Corps, and then returned to Cranbrook to start his family. Throughout his years he did many things that touched many lives. He may have served you a meal or a beverage at the Rainbow Dining and Dancing Club, or he may have helped to build your home or business as he was an excellent carpenter.

Yosh was a Legion member and spent much of his time with good friends there, either on the dance floor or at the meat draws. He was also a valued and respected member of the Fraternal Order Of Eagles, where he held nearly every title the organization had. From member, to secretary, all the way up to Grand Worthy Provincial President, Yosh represented the Cranbrook Aerie throughout Canada and the USA with dignity and was greatly admired and loved.

Through these organizations and throughout his life, Yosh made many wonderful friends who will all miss him dearly.

Left to cherish his memory are his beloved partner, Karen Deveau, his children Rob Ismond (Dawn), Donna Nakahara (Herb Richter), Colin Nakahara and Noriko Nakahara (Jason White), his brothers Kutsumi and Koichi and sister Noriko and their families, as well as his sister-in-laws Barb and Penny and their families, his grandchildren Michelle, Christina, Corilynn and Tay. He will be sadly missed by Karen's family as well. Yosh was predeceased by his mother Tsune "Terry" and his father Rinzo "George", and his brothers Genshiro and Hiroki.

There will be a Celebration Of Yosh's Life at 2:00 pm on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at the Fraternal Order Of Eagles Hall in Cranbrook.

Home Improvement Tip: Painting Concrete

Painting a concrete driveway or garage floor is something you can do yourself this summer. The first step, as with any painting project, is to prepare the surface. Using a pressure washer, remove any debris and dirt that have accumulated over the years. If there are grease or oil stains on the concrete, use tri-sodium phosphate to remove them so your paint has a good surface to adhere. After the surface is thoroughly clean and dry, make any necessary repairs. After repairs are finished and dried, to create a water resistant foundation the concrete must be sealed and primed. Check with your local home improvement store to find a good quality sealer and primer that complement each other. Once the surface is properly sealed and primed, you are ready to apply the paint. Masonry paints are available and should be applied in several thin layers to create a more solid paint surface. After a few days with no disruptions, the paint will be dried completely and ready for use. Brightening up your driveway or garage floor can add value to your home and make it feel new again.

How to handle cattle in a low-stress way is only one of the safety lessons taught with FARSJA Propane Safety ATV Safety Rural Fire Plan Fire Extinguisher Use Fire Safety Internet Safety Bike Safety Power Mowers and Tools With the exception to low-stress cattle handling (2 hours), each course will be 1 hour long. Participants are allowed to sign up for as many courses as you want.

Time: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Location: Wycliffe Rodeo Grounds Fee: Bring a donation for the Cranbrook Food Bank.

Lunch: 12 p.m. - $10 adults, $5 kids under 12.

Lunch will be pulled pork sandwiches, salad, homemade pie, coffee, tea. Proceeds from lunch go to Wasa & District 4H Club.
