Buckner talks about business success DELYNDA PILON Women of the North

Canadian television journalist Dianne Buckner, who is perhaps best known as the host of Dragons’ Den, will be one of the keynote speakers during the Women of the North conference April 16 at the Civic Centre.

“I’m going to be talking about success in the business world,” Buckner said. “I’ve been a business journalist 20 years now, and I’ve been lucky enough to spend a lot of time with people who are very successful – like the Dragons.”

Buckner’s interest in business began when she was hired as a reporter at Venture, a job which began her specialization as a reporter in the business sector.

“When I got a job at Venture, I wasn’t seeking to cover business. It just so happened there was a job opening at Venture.”

The show, which ran about 23 years, told the stories of entrepreneurs.

“That was my initiation into business, and I discovered I really enjoyed it,” she said.

As she met with more and more successful business people, she noticed they shared similar characteristics.

“I’ve travelled the world and met all kinds of CEO’s and small entrepreneurs who’ve been successful in their own communities,” she said. “Basically, through spending time with all those sorts of people, I noticed all of them share characteristics, so I put together a list I call the top 10 traits of successful people in the business world, and I am presenting that.”

Those traits are pretty much the same, whether you are a male or female businessperson, however Buckner has noticed one difference.

“I would say the list is pretty much the same for males and females. People are people,” she said. “But I think men are more comfortable with bragging than women. I’m exaggerating slightly, but when we were at Venture we were constantly getting calls from men saying ‘you should do a story on me, you should cover my business’.

“I remember one man calling and saying, ‘do a story

on me, I’m thinking of starting a business’.

“On the flip side, we called one women who was very successful in the west and was expanding into the east, and said we wanted to come behind the scenes with her, but she said she was really busy.”

Though she pointed out she was generalizing since some women really enjoy the spotlight, others could benefit from being better self-promoters.

For herself, she said she hasn’t had difficulty within her position because of her gender.

“There’s always been room for men and women in journalism.

I don’t think that’s changed a lot over the years,” she said.

Any criticism she’s had, she added, has been constructive.

“I guess I’ve been fortunate, at least through work, that any kind of criticism I’ve had has been constructive,” she said.

“Basically if someone is trying to help you be better at what you do they’re giving you a gift. I think generally speaking, criticism should be gratefully received.

Some of the criticism received online, she said, has been critical and harsh.

“The online culture, I think, almost prides itself in absolutely brutal honesty.

“I was really shaken by what I saw.”

The editor of the page told her not to read the com-

ments, that there were all kinds of crazy people in the world with nothing better to do, however Buckner recognized that as an exaggeration as well and pointed out some people have fair comments to make.

She said you have to listen to what people are thinking. But she did stop reading the comments for the most part.

“It kind of takes you down,” she said.

You’ll most likely find me dancing wildly while travelling from country-to-country, climbing old trucks and coconut trees, downside-up in deserts, face-side full of desserts, twisted up in yoga studios, soul-singing at kirtans, or howling at the full moon (awoooooooo)!!

I get high on life every day, and I’m so grateful for the opportunity to share my bliss with you!

I was raised as the oldest of five in a family overflowing with love. Coming home was always my favorite time of day because my baby brothers would whoop out my name, tumble over top tables, smother me in pure glee and knock me off my feet into an epicly entangled mess of uncontrollable laughter.

I tell you this because it’s basically the story of my life: falling over and over again… and laughing myself silly while clambering back up!

Demographically, I’m an 19-year-old Canadian girl. I’ve lived in Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Vancouver, Maui, Beijing, Ann Arbor, Prince George, Wuhan, Las Cruces, and travelled extensively across Asia, North America, and a teensy weensy bit of Europe. Wanderlust drives my soul, and it has brought me a life brimming full of endless adventure and a deep appreciation for the beauty in the world.

Academically, I’m a fourth year Bachelor of Health Sciences student, majoring in Biomedical Studies and minoring in all things artsy and fun (like theatre, sculpture, photography and dance). I love exploring our marvelous bodies and the magical ways they function – what a treasure!

Professionally, I’m a student of the universe, a creative director and humbled teacher of yoga, piano, figure skating, debate, public speaking, cross-country skiing, and wellness. I’m a certified 200-hour Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) through Yoga Alliance, with my Grade 10 Piano Practical from the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM). I competed in debate and public speaking extensively throughout high school and university, ranking first in my region for three years consecutively, before moving on to found and successfully coach a university team and teach internationally.

When I lived in the community of the South Peace we worked on numerous projects together. I worked on a National Literacy Project with the Métis National Council of Canada and also was the Vice President for Literacy BC. Theresa was always eager to lend a hand in furthering and advancing Aboriginal Literacy into the forefront and I knew that I could count on her for many projects. We arranged several Walk for Literacy Campaign’s together.

We also worked on setting up an Aboriginal Literacy Society in the South Peace.

One of our most ambitious undertakings was when we developed the Dawson Creek Aboriginal Women’s Resource Society – Theresa was an inspiration in getting this fledgling organization to deliver services to Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal women in Dawson Creek – we even assisted the local MP in introducing a private members bill to assist woman who have seen violence in their relationships to set up a new identity from their abusive spouses.

Throughout the years that I have known Theresa she has been developing her skill and talent of becoming a public speaker – with her free time she would take seminars and classes with the local chapter of Toastmasters. All of this paid off as she now delivers presentations in our Aboriginal community members promoting the health of Canadians through presentations on diabetes-related topics and Canadian Diabetes Association programs and services.

Theresa has been a recipient of many awards. One such award was when she won the Citizen of the Year Award. Of all the years that this award has been presented to worthy citizens of Dawson Creek, it was the first time that this award was presented to an Aboriginal woman in Dawson Creek. This esteemed privilege is evidence that Theresa is a unique individual and deserving individual. Another award that Theresa has been the recipient of is the BC Community Achievement Award for being an outstanding volunteer in Dawson Creek, a role model for the Aboriginal people in her community, and as a variety show director that enhances cultural diversity and dialogue. She has learned to give back to the Aboriginal community by her tireless devotion and passion that she exerts in her work duties.

Most importantly, Theresa was “born to lead” and she eagerly works continuously developing and honing her skills. She was recently in the Leading Communities BC action-oriented community leadership training program which works with emerging, potential and experienced leaders to develop and enhance their leadership skills for betterment of their community. She is an exceptional person and a blessing to all who have been fortunate to cross her path. She truly illustrates a positive reflection of the Aboriginal culture and unselfishly lives her life with great pride, dignity and kindness.

Her loyalty and caring for people has resulted in positive changes in her community.

So it gives me great pleasure to know such an outstanding Aboriginal woman, in my mind and heart I have confidence in her ability to rise to the many challenges she takes on. This wonderful woman is proud to be an Aboriginal woman and through her daily life conveys all of this in an extraordinary way that empowers her Aboriginal beliefs and values and bringing them into the forefront where it should be and not cowardly hidden as many have done in the past.

Influence and Impact Woman of the Year WINNER (TIED): MARY KORDYBAN Also nominated: Rebecca Boyd, Ruth Buehler, Crystal Livingstone, Annette Loe, Debbie Pierre, LucyAnn Martin, Renata King Mary Kordyban was born in Edmonton where she met her husband William at a school dance.

Mary and William came to Prince George in 1951 and together they built Carrier Lumber into one of the region’s largest forestry employers.

They have contributed to improving the livelihoods of its employees and community. Mary continues as a director of Carrier Lumber to this day.

Mary and William had two children and three grandchildren. They were members of St. George’s church since 1952 and Mary was treasurer for 50 years. Mary was Vice President and Treasurer of Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League of Canada for 37 years. Mary has actively participated and poured into the community for over six decades.

Mary established the Mary Kordyban Foundation after her husband succumbed to cancer in 2000. The Mary Kordyban Foundation donated $2 million to the BC Canadian Cancer Society for the building of the Kordyban Lodge. This donation was the catalyst and the remainder of the $12 million was raised in a very short time.

Philanthropy is a way of life for Mary. She has donated and raised money for many charitable organizations from the March of Dimes to Hospice. One of the things close to Mary’s heart is the future of the north, her desire is to help the youth and make a difference in their lives. Mary has established endowment funds for scholarships at both UNBC and CNC. She has also donated for scholarships for the Prince George Music

Connie gives selflessly to our community. She gives in so many ways and does not stop even when adversity gets in the way. Connie lives her life by her father’s wisdom, “when you are blessed in this life, your job then is to help others.” Connie lives a healthy lifestyle of no alcohol and drugs and helps others find their way to do the same. She leads by example in all areas of her life and gives whatever is needed to help those in need. She gives her number to women who have suffered abuse, answers her phone in the middle of the night even if they just need to talk.

When she says she is there for someone, she is there, whenever, no matter what.

A successful powwow going on its eighth year, a women’s support group that helps women heal, a voice for our missing and murdered women, an advocate for our local Women’s resource society, a provider to those who cannot provide for themselves, a voice and woman who ensures our Aboriginal children get caught up to other children to ensure their success in school. The impact is huge within our community and those that know Connie know that she is there and helps everywhere, anytime, anyway she can.

She is caring, selfless, giving, loving, willing, capable, helpful, nice, provider to those in need, lends a hand where needed, gives an ear to those who require it and may not have any one else to talk to.

Shannon McPhail is a fourth-generation resident born and raised in the Kispiox Valley and grew up on a working ranch spending much of her youth fishing and hunting in the Skeena mountains with her family.

She has worked as a white-water rafting guide, a big-game hunting guide, a pipeline construction welder, and a nutritionist at a women’s fitness centre after her education in the field of chemical technology.

She serves on several boards including the Dogwood Initiative in Victoria, she is a mother of two and the Executive Director of the Skeena Watershed Conservation Coalition (SWCC). Shannon founded the SWCC in 2004, an organization that has twice won the Tides Top 10 Award which recognizes the top 10 most innovative and effective organizations in Canada.

Her work with the SWCC has allowed her to participate in many great achievements including the 2009 Spirit of the Skeena Swim when Ali Howard became the first person to swim the entire the Skeena River; the 10,000 salmon project which become the largest known collection of children’s art in B.C.; the Youth on Water & Women on Water programs; the recent victory over Shell in the Sacred Headwaters; and countless other programs and events.

Annita has dedicated herself to creating a prosperous future for the Tahltan people and has spent most of her career working toward that vision through the creation of responsible development opportunities for the nation within Tahltan traditional territory.

Currently Annita is in her third term as President of Tahltan Central Council (TCC), and has led the Tahltan Nation through some of the most challenging events in the nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s history, and under her leadership, the Tahltan Nation secured over $2 billion in agreements for the Northwest Transmission Line and AltaGas, and recently, Shell Oilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s decision to relinquish its tenures in the Klappan.

In 2012, Annita become the first Aboriginal woman to be named to the board of the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada. She currently sits on the Legal Services Society board. Annita has also received numerous awards for her community involvement including special recognition by Governor-General Adrianne Clarkson for her work as a role model for native youth Annita has a Bachelor of Social Work degree and a law degree from the University of Victoria and has studied public relations at BCIT.

My name is Theresa Gladue and I am from the Cree Nation. I was born in Grande Prairie, Alberta but I was raised at the Sturgeon Lake First Nations community. I moved to Dawson Creek 25 years ago.

In the environment I grew up in I never realized dreams existed, never mind come true. It was only in the last 15 years that I acknowledged that I could change my life and do something different, something positive.

I started volunteering in my community by co-founding the Dawson Creek Aboriginal Women’s Awareness Resource Society, being the Aboriginal liaison for the regional and local arts societies, and starting up a small non-profit production company that utilized community talent to fundraise for local non-profit societies. I sat on many boards such as the Nawican Friendship Centre, Northeast Métis Association, and Dawson Creek Golf & Country Club and the Dawson Creek Literacy Society.

I am married and work for Northern Lights College as the Aboriginal Education Coordinator. In my spare time I write short stories and poetry, and I golf and bowl.

I now know that dreams can come true and that they are, and will continue to be, the key to my success. The dream I have created for myself is to be a positive and effective person and I believe that as long as I keep a strong attitude I have no doubt that I will inevitably do what I’ve always dreamed of. When I look back at my life I want to be able to say, “This is my life, and I’m happy with who I am and what I’ve accomplished.

She started her company in 2009, and it has quickly grown into a well-rounded marketing agency.
