B.C. Seniors’ Home Renovation Tax Credit continues & saying goodbye to 7% PST on contractor labour!

T

he good news is that as of April 1 renovation contractors will only charge 5 per cent GST instead of the 12% HST for their services (e.g., carpentry, plumbing, electrical wiring). The same will apply to thermal insulation, weather stripping and caulking products.

The B.C. Seniors’ Home Renovation Tax Credit continues in 2013. It is a refundable personal income tax credit to assist with

the cost of permanent home renovations that provide individuals aged 65 and over with increased independence, allowing them the flexibility to remain in their own homes longer. The maximum credit will be $1,000 annually, calculated as 10 per cent of eligible expenditures. The credit will be available to individuals who incur eligible expenditures on or after April 1, 2012. The credit can be claimed by seniors, whether they own their home or rent, and by individuals who share a home with a senior relative. For eligibility & more details visit www.gov.bc.ca

In these tough economic times we all seem to be closely watching how we spend our money. An important consideration when it comes to new installations or renovations of existing plumbing fixtures in our homes is that we need to be careful not to substitute good quality for the many substandard products that are constantly advertised.

How can you tell the difference? The best way to protect your investment in your home is to have a good plan and give yourself time to do the research on the products you are interested in. The marketplace is very large and you will find what appear to be similar products made by the same manufacturer in different stores and the price for what appears to be the same product could differ by as much as two or three hundred dollars on a large item such as a tub or shower to smaller price differences on items such as faucets. If you find a tub or shower with a large price difference but one that may be made by the same manufacturer, there is usually a difference in quality, such as half the thickness of acrylic or fewer coats of gelcoat. You do not want to accidentally drop a shampoo bottle, which happened to one of our customers, and have it make a hold in the bottom of your shower. These are items that are expensive to replace so spending those extra dollars the first time can definitely save money in the long term.

The choice in faucets is never ending. How can you figure out what you are paying the extra dollars for? Check the weight of the faucet, quality faucets have lots of brass, the lower priced faucets have lots of plastic. teed for life? Your kitchen faucet is likely the most used faucet in your home and good quality ensures reliability in your kitchen, a must for today’s busy working families. Kitchen sinks also come in many materials and styles. The same research applies to check what material the sink is made from and is it durable enough to give you years of maintenance free use.

Shopping at a specialty plumbing store can have many advantages especially a store where you can buy quality products, arrange for installation by a plumber or talk to the experienced and informative staff for do-it-yourself information. This is the same store that will handle any warranty problems, keep stock of replacement parts that may be needed in future years and have the resources to look after all your needs.

The bottom line is to do your homework. Shopping around and ask lots of questions from people that know the products and are willing to service what they sell long after it has been installed. The old saying still holds true… “You really do get what you pay for.”
