Fire chief re-instated

The Town of Qualicum Beach says Darryl Kohse — reinstated as of Monday — was not the fire chief when an alleged criminal incident, raised by Coun. Bill Luchtmeijer last week, occurred.

Kohse was appointed fire chief in 2009. The town did not say when the alleged incident occurred, but when the town released portions of the Fire Department Administrative Review Report, it included this from town spokesperson Patricia Huntsman: “Please note that the subject matter of what has been referred to the RCMP is alleged to have occurred prior to the commencement of the current fire chief’s appointment. The NEWS has obtained an unedited version of the Fire Service Report made public by a motion of Qualicum Beach town council on April 8. When it released its edited version of the report on Wednesday afternoon, Town spokespersson Patricia Huntsman wrote: “The Town has severed personal information in accordance with its privacy obligations under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.” Eight points in the 16-page review were removed from the report by the town before sending its version to The NEWS. Items omitted from the version of the Fire Service Report released by the Town of Qualicum Beach on Wednesday are as follows: Under the summary findings section: • There are four officers where there are concerns (e.g. safety practices; firefighter trust; treatment of firefighters; relationship with the Chief).

Trustees now say they can balance budget LISSA ALEXANDER reporter@pqbnews.com

School board trustees say they are pretty confident they will be able to balance the budget during the next school year, Lynette Kershaw told The NEWS last week.

The board was tasked with finding $1.2 million in savings, and a draft preliminary budget was presented at a meeting last Wednesday.

The budget sits $507,000 short of a balanced budget, Kershaw said, but if the district changes Spring Break from two weeks back to one week next year, that will make up $191,000 of savings. There is also just over $500,000 in surplus from last year that could be used as a last resort.

Savings so far were found by increasing bus rates and finding savings in each of the schools as well as finding a 10 per cent savings from each budget committee.

“It’s a lot of little things, it‚‘s not really any one or two big ticket items,” Kershaw said.

Kershaw did want to outline that student support services have not been cut, nor have teachers been cut back. Another budget meeting will be held April 17 and then on April 23 the budget will need to be finalized.

The 2.5 billion-people-strong markets of India and China represent economic opportunity for the people and businesses of Parksville Qualicum Beach, Pat Bell told a crowd at TighNa-Mara Resort on Thursday.

“Both of these countries want what we have to sell,” Bell, a Prince George MLA who is not running for re-election May 14, told the Parksville and District Chamber of Commerce gathering. “And you can take the word ‘communism’ out of China. There is no more entrepreneurial nation in the world than China.”

Before he spoke with The NEWS in an interview after his presentation, Bell did tell the gathering the growing middle class in China and India could mean big business and jobs for

Parksville Qualicum Beach.

“They are stacked like cordwood in those countries and you know what they want in their holidays? They want space,” said Bell, who has made numerous trips to China and Indian in the past few years. We need to reach out and grab that opportunity.”

Bell said in an interview that the people of B.C. who want to sell products and services to China and Indian can ask for the help of provincially-funded trade offices in these countries that are staffed with people who understand the issues and needs of the locals.

He also said he was concerned an Adrian Dixled NDP government would close those offices.

“He was in Prince George last week and said in front of 450 people (at the Council of Forestry Industries convention) that he didn’t believe that government had any role in international market development,” Bell said. “There wasn’t a person in the room who believed anything he said.”

The Lions had initially gone ahead with the estimated $70,000 project using their own funds, intending to continue fundraising. In March they received a $65,597 federal government contribution.

The new provincial money will allow the Lions to continue their ongoing work improving and maintaining the rest of the famous Ventureland playground.

The NEWS has received unconfirmed reports that a Nanoose Bay man who ran in the Boston Marathon was not harmed in the explosions that marred the race on Monday and killed two people.

The Boston marathon’s official website says Terry Riggins of Nanoose Bay finished the

26-mile-plus race in three hours, 59 minutes and 19 seconds. The latest Riggins could have started the race was at 10:40 a.m. Boston time, which would have had him finishing before 2:40 p.m. If he was in the first wave of starters (not counting elite runners), Riggins would have started at 10 a.m. and finished before 2 p.m.

According to various online sources, two bombs detonated

near the finish line of the race just before 3 p.m. Initial reports indicated two people were killed and 100 injured in the blasts.

A Parksville man reported to The NEWS he had heard through a friend that Riggins was unharmed in the blasts.

Under the survey results section: • The Fire Chief is seen to use an authoritarian/directive management style. This is not well accepted by some firefighters and is a factor that directly or indirectly affects morale.

Under the impacts of low morale section: • “Several officers cannot be trusted to be safe.”

Under the major recommendations section: • The town should evaluate the performance and future of the fire chief.

• Assuming the fire chief remains in his role, he should improve his leadership and management skills through coaching, mentoring and courses.

Under the firefighter survey results section (exhibit 2): • (Question number 10) The Fire Chief is an effective leader and manager. RATINGS (out of 10): Firefighters - 3; Officers - 6; Difference - 3.

The town’s edited version of the report is available at town hall. On Monday morning, The NEWS asked Mayor Teunis Westbroek four questions related to the report and he responded by e-mail The NEWS: In general, what is your view on what specific action(s) the town, mayor and/or council should commence in reference to the 26 recommendations in the report?

Westbroek: “The Town is considering each of the recommendations in the report and will make decisions on next steps. We look forward to opportunities to improve the Department, while continuing the Department’s record of providing excellent service to the community.

The Town will accomplish this by working collaboratively with the Fire Department to prepare an action plan to address the recommendations in the report.”

The NEWS: Major Recommendation #1 was: “The town should evaluate the performance and future of the Fire Chief.” Our question is this: Has this been done to your satisfaction?

Westbroek: “The Town has a duty to not disclose any personal information including comments about individuals.”

The NEWS: Are you concerned that with the reinstatement of the chief that the department will lose members?

Holding two major events at the same time on the same day can be the kiss of death to both, as most organizers know. However, when the Lighthouse Country Business Association held their trade show on Sunday, they were well aware they would be doing so at the same time as the monthly Lions Club pancake breakfast.

They did it on purpose, said Jeff Shields, and it appears to have paid off.

The pancake breakfast, held at the Lighthouse Community Hall, was only steps away from the Lions Den hall next door. “Last year we were down at the Community Hall, in a small room,” Shields said. “We had 31 exhibitors

crammed into a tiny space. This year we decided to step it up a bit. This is a much larger space and it makes it easier to get around.”

With a high-energy promotion at the pancake breakfast, the 40 booths at the hall saw a steady stream of visitors dropping by after they ate.

“The pancake breakfast gets anywhere from 500 to 700 people on a good day,” said Lighthouse Country Business Association president Betsy Poel. “Last year we wanted to see if we could promote local businesses at it and we filled the room, so we decided this year to go bigger, which is why we moved into the hall.”

The expansion was made possible, she noted, by a grant from the North-

ern Island Economic Fund, which allowed the association to use it to pay for advertising and trade show supply rentals. This allowed them to offset the cost to the exhibitors.

Those exhibitors, Shields said, covered a wide spectrum of products and services. “We’ve got fencing and moulding companies, repair services, contractors, realtors, chimney sweeps and stove sales. The Regional District of Nanaimo is here, Emergency Preparation is here. Bowser Hardware is doing popcorn for us today.”

Poel said she was pleased with the way this opportunity to highlight local businesses was turning out.

“Looking at the response I would like to have it every year,” she said.

Town reacts to media coverage continued from page a1

On Thursday, the Town of Qualicum Beach sent this statement to The NEWS: “The mayor, as spokesperson for the Town of Qualicum Beach, today released the following statement regarding recent media coverage concerning the notice of motion put forward by a member of council at Monday night’s council meeting regarding the fire department: “Town council and staff are active-

ly addressing the recommendations from the fire department Administrative Review. The fire chief had been removed from day to day operations during the Fire Service Administrative Review process. With the review of the report now completed, mayor and council have re-instated the fire chief. It is expected that the fire chief will be back on duty effective Monday, April 15, 2013. The Town of Qualicum Beach looks forward

to working openly and effectively with the department in addressing the recommendations of the report, while continuing the department’s record of providing excellent service to the community, as cited in the report.”

In reaction to the news release, Luchtmeijer told The NEWS Friday morning council had not had a meeting regarding the re-instatement of the chief in the previous 48 hours.

With only two out of the three declared candidates on hand to answer questions from the crowd, Friday’s all-candidates forum at The Gardens in Qualicum Beach lacked a whole lot of fire, with NDP candidate Barry Avis and B.C. Conservative candidate David Coupland agreeing more often than locking horns.

Liberal candidate Michelle Stilwell excused herself from the event, citing flu-like symptoms and a concern for the well-being of the residents in the retirement home.

After moderator Phil Spencer from St. Stephen’s United Church laid down the ground rules, Avis and Coupland took different approaches in their opening statements, with Avis emphasizing his experience in various forms of local governance, including nine years as a town councillor, as well as serving on the board of the Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities (AVICC) and the Vancouver Island Library board.

“Since I moved to Qualicum Beach with my wife in 1999, I’ve spent my last 11 years preparing myself to become your MLA,” he said.

Coupland took a different tack, noting his experience working in the fields of health and education and emphasizing the potential for a brighter future in the province, but only if B.C. elects to go with a different style of governance.

“I believe B.C. has the potential to lead Canada with a future of success and opportunity,” he said. “However I’ve come to realize that without better government this may not happen.”

where the candidates’ positions differed widely.

One of these involved the divisive Northern Gateway pipeline issue.

Coupland said the oil bought by China will make its way there one way or another and it’s in B.C.’s interest that it be moved in the safest, most cost-effective manner — which is a pipeline.

“It could be put on a rail car and taken to the coast legally and we would have to break all sorts of international laws and treaties to stop it,” he said. “We have to rethink our positions in that regard. It’s going to go, so what’s the safest way that’s in the best long-term interest of British Columbia?”

Avis said that while he doesn’t support a pipeline going west from Alberta, and thence to Asia, he thinks it would be better to send the oil east.

“We’ve been clear we are not in fa-

vour of a pipeline going to Kitimat from Alberta,” he said. “We are in favour of using our resources and I would be in favour of a refinery in Alberta. We don’t send enough oil back east and they are getting it from other countries. We should be keeping the oil in Canada and having more secondary manufacturing.”

In response to a question about the voting system in B.C., Coupland got in the closest thing to a shot during the back and forth, when Avis said NDP leader Adrian Dix had pledged that MLAs can vote their conscience.

“If you don’t have it in writing it doesn’t mean anything,” Coupland responded. “We have it in writing that our MLAs are free to vote in the interest of their constituents. You can say whatever you want, but when the moment of truth arrives, you will have to toe the party line.”

Westbroek: “No – the report also states that the Qualicum Beach Fire Department is very successful based on performance factors: • Response times are running at 7.24 minutes (2012), which is very good for

• The average number of firefighters responding to calls is 4.6, which again is very good.

• WorkSafe BC incidents have been very low.

• Firefighters are well trained with relatively high levels of certification (e.g. 17 NFPA 1041 fire service instructors at level I or II).

The NEWS asked Bell if the people of China and India hear these things, or do they even pay attention to the comments of B.C. politicians?

“Not today, but they will pay attention when he doesn’t show up and they will pay attention when he closes the trade offices and they will pay attention when he doesn’t send ministers — when they aren’t there actively pursuing those investment opportunities.”

Bell also linked international market development to his endorsement of the B.C. Liberal candidate in the Parksville Qualicum Beach constituency, Paralympic gold medalist Michelle Stilwell.

“We need to prepare ourselves like we have never prepared ourselves before,” said Bell. “Great athletes know how to prepare.”

“Taste of Oceanside has been our major fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Parksville AM for the past six years and it gives us the opportunity to raise funds to support people in the local community and internationally,” said Lynne Pearson, past president of the club and chair of The Taste of Oceanside.

The event will bring together 10 local restaurants or food companies such as La Vida Vegan, Lefty’s Fresh Food and Little Qualicum Cheeseworks, each serving samples of specialty menu items. Ticket holders can wander through the Parksville Community and Conference Centre from food station to food station, sipping on refreshments while listening to live music. There will also be door prizes and a silent auction. Pearson said the event has been very successful in the past with around 450 people in attendance.

The event runs from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and tickets are $15.

Once inside food and beverage coupons are $1 a piece, which can be exchanged for items ranging from one to three coupons.

LifeLabs on board The Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA) says residents of the Parksville Qualicum Beach region will benefit from on-site laboratory services at the Oceanside Health Centre (OHC) as a result of an agreement between Vancouver Island Health and LifeLabs Medical Laboratory Services.

LifeLabs will be relocating its current laboratory services on Memorial Avenue in Parksville to the OHC when it opens in June, according to a news release from VIHA last week. VIHA says the LifeLabs facility in Qualicum is not affected by the change and will continue to provide specimen collection for Qualicum residents.

“We welcome the addition of LifeLab’s specimen collection and service facility to the Oceanside Health Centre,” said Sheila Cruikshank, project director for the OHC. “This relocation supports the purpose of the OHC which is to offer integrated health care services in a way that supports individual long-term wellness through coordinated services that are all located under one roof.”

LifeLabs will be leasing 1,500 square feet on the first floor of the OHC. The new facility will add service capacity through five phlebotomy (blood collection) chairs, two Holter monitor/electrocardiogram rooms as well as wheelchair access.

The money will be used to help support her with her efforts in caring for the animals that the SPCA receives. One poll matters

T

he old saying goes something like this: the only poll that matters is the one on election day when people mark their X beside the name of a candidate.

Often, the people who are voicing this mantra are members of a party well behind in the polls.

That was the case Thursday night when we sat down with Trade, Tourism and Skills Training Minister Pat Bell for a wide-ranging interview.

“Our demise has been greatly exaggerated,” Bell said of the fortunes of the B.C. Liberals as the province enters into the home stretch of the election campaign that culminates May 14. In fact, the official writ comes today.

Recent polls suggest the NDP has a 17-20-point lead over the B.C. Liberals and are poised to form the next government.

These polls, Bell says, do not take into account two very important factors: the just-released NDP financial plan; and riding-by-riding analysis. In terms of the latter, Bell points out that under our current system, the party that forms the government is the party that wins the most constituencies, regardless of the popular vote numbers province-wide, which is generally what polls reflect.

Bell, who is facing some serious health issues and is not running for re-election in Prince George, said he found it interesting NDP Leader Adrian Dix was not frontand-centre — not even in the building actually — when the NDP rolled out the financial planks of its platform last week. Take that anyway you would like, but Bell suggested Dix either doesn’t approve of his party’s budgetary road map or doesn’t want to be closely linked to the tax-andspend plans that look a lot like NDP circa-1990s.

Bell also believes a closer, riding-by-riding look — especially in areas like the North, the Okanagan and even here in Parksville Qualicum Beach — might make some people think twice if they are predicting a total decimation of the B.C. Liberals.

Yes, Bell is being a good soldier and putting on a brave face. But he has always been a straight-shooter and he is not running for office. And he seems genuine in his concern for the province in regards to trade and tourism and our economy if the NDP forms government.

But what else is he going to say, right? Well, he could say nothing. And he’s not the bombastic type. As always, we shall observe with interest.

Letters Bollywood waste?

During the lead-up to the Bollywood Awards, there were a number of news items concerning the taxpayers investment of $11 million into this celebration.

Since the completion of the awards celebration I have heard or seen absolutely nothing concerning the monetary results of this huge investment.

Is this a cover-up by the powers in control of the news media, or just not newsworthy?

Beach should Be priority The Qualicum Beach waterfront I knew as a boy 55 years ago has been seriously compromised by incremental change. We are loosing the very reason for the town being here. And within 50, or 100 years, we stand to loose all of what remains. We need to start planning now.

On Thursday night, the town introduced a planning strategy to address waterfront revitalization and sea level change. This is an admirable first step, as yet unfunded.

The strategy lays out a two-year, twophase process, the first phase establishing the scientific data base, and the second working with the community to establish multifaceted design solutions. These solutions must address not only the realities of sea level rise, but also the profile of future

residential and commercial properties, engineering infrastructures, natural features and recreational amenities.

The required construction may require ultimately millions of dollars in capital investment, and may take several decades to implement. But the cost of doing nothing will also run into millions of dollars in infrastructure and property losses. And doing nothing will irreparably damage the quality of life for future generations.

It is encouraging that the town has applied for a grant to begin the planning work; but additional resources will be needed.

We are the stewards of what we have.

Let’s look into the future and get our priorities straight: funding, completion and implementation of a Waterfront Plan must become an ongoing community commitment.

We should make this funding the priority issue in the next municipal election.

Opening Page 3 of the The NEWS on Thursday startled me when I saw an artist’s rendering of a proposed development of condos to be built at the corner of First Avenue West and Harlech Road.

There’s nothing wrong with the design — it’s very smart, modern and upscale for another town, but would do nothing to enhance the village appeal of Qualicum Beach.

What are councillors Dave Willie, Mary Brouillette and Bill Luchtmeijer thinking? Just look at the beautiful peaked roofs of a lot of the buildings in downtown Qualicum; the attractive condos above stores — they are uniquely different and this is what gives Qualicum Beach its quaintness and village appeal to residents and visitors alike.

A contemporary building in this town would look out of place, and one that overshadows the Town Hall is a bit off.

Mayor Teunis Westbroek and Coun. Scott Tanner are right — this building doesn’t fit in and it’s a stretch from the village design guidelines.

The charisma, the atmosphere, and the very essence of Qualicum Beach will fade as the doors open and make way for more tall buildings devoid of character.

Absolutely that land needs to be developed, but surely the same architect could design a building more in line with the charm of the town.

You never know, they might also sell quicker, too.

To compound matters, the townspeople are expected to pay for the underground services this development requires, as well as any road improvements for increased traffic. These are all normal development costs and are properly part of the project; they are costs the developer passes on to the purchasers. Bully for Councillor Dave Willie for pushing his ideals, but whether they are sound is a matter for debate.

Indeed, one wonders if some members of council are being manipulated by outside forces, rather than doing their job of protecting the interests of the taxpayers who put them in office.

Thanks for printing my letter (‘Ill-informed opinions’) on April 2 and I was delighted to see it provoked a response (‘Who is ill-informed?’) from Bill Vinton on April 9.

Vinton doesn’t know me, nor I him, yet he claimed that he was on site cleaning the UK’s first major oil spill in 1967,and I wasn’t. In fact, I was at my birthplace in Cornwall, UK, taking a short leave from my employment as Navigating Officer with Elder Dempster Lines of Liverpool, and vividly remember everything about the grounding of Torrey Canyon on Pollard’s Rock at Seven Stones Reef.

However, I’m thankful Vinton acknowledged that thousands of mariners like me have sailed for several decades, yet never experienced an oil spill. The inconvenient truth is that at any given second of any day, many billions of barrels of crude oil are being safely and efficiently delivered by millions of tanker-tonnage to thousands of destinations around the globe. The professional mariners on board are acutely aware of their responsibilities to the environment as well as to their employers, but whenever men and machines co-

incide an accident is always a possibility.

You’ll note that I use the word “possibility” and not the word “inevitability” that the anti-tankeristas — whether they be environmental activists, professional media pundits or amateur scribblers — invariably use.

There are terrible highway accidents involving all types of motor vehicles; horrible plane crashes; heart-breaking train-wrecks; the list goes on and on. Yet nobody talks of outright bans on motor vehicles, planes or trains. Instead, they strive to improve the efficiency of these machines, and improve safety regulations to prevent further tragedies. That was exactly the principle for my wife and I, when my letter referred to our combined 40 years of oil-spill-free deep-sea experience.

If there was never progress in all realms of transportation, the world would be stuck in the Stone-Age, before the invention of the wheel. Once again, the inconvenient truth is that many anti-tankeristas seem to be quite willing to use this Stone-Age mentality regarding tankers, while simultaneously driving their gasoline-powered vehicles to big-box stores to purchase all the Chinese plastic goods, all derived from crude oil, of course. bErniE sMiTh Parksville

In conversations around Qualicum Beach the word “monstrosity” often comes up in reference to the building proposed for the lot beside the town hall.

I admit to voting for the three councillors who favor the project, but that was before I realized how development-minded they were and before they pushed for the monstrosity, regardless of the town building code.

They would no longer receive my vote and I suspect that this will apply to many others as well. If so, they are now acting against the voters wishes.

If the proposed structure is in fact a monstrosity and turns out to be a white elephant, this will be entirely the responsibility of the three councillors, since they have turned the town council into a kangaroo court.

Is it too late to suggest that a more modest development would be better suited to the site?

This story, however, is older than two years — it belongs to Mayor Teunis Westbroek and years of former councillors, staff and the taxes of Qualicum Beach citizens. It’s thanks to them for their foresight, priorities, management and the actual money that we are able to build a fire hall. No wonder the township of Qualicum Beach is considered an exemplary municipality in B.C. and it’s debt-free, to boot!

As a volunteer captain for emergency preparedness on my block, I too am very eager to have this fire hall facility. I do, however, have faith in caution and in leaders who care about my money. I especially have faith in the ability of people who have a history of knowing how to apply and receive grants.

Model United Nations Shawnigan Lake School student, Maddy Torrie, from Nanoose Bay, recently led a Model UN conference.

Ten schools from Vancouver Island participated in the simulation on groups including a variety of historical and current geopolitical issues including the International Criminal Court, a Crisis Committee, the International Atomic Energy Agency and the General Assembly.

“When I was nine, someone asked me what my favourite show was, and I told them, ‘the news,’” said Maddy Torrie. “With my interest in current events, joining the Model UN at Shawnigan made sense.”

The Model International Press Corps — selection of international news agencies — created news articles about the other committees, which were displayed where all delegates could read them. They also prepared and executed lines of questioning for certain countries’ delegates in press conferences.

They debated topics like: International Criminal Court Simulation: The Prosecutor vs Bashar Al-Assad.

Crisis Committee: The French and Indian War / Seven Years War. General Assembly—SOCHUM: Social Issues of HIV/AIDS. “Model UN is not just a challenging academic pursuit, it is also a chance to perfect public speaking skills and offers the opportunity to

meet new people. Being part of the Model UN team, my public speaking skills have grown tremendously, and I have learned more than I could in any class,” Torrie said.

“Where debate gets more attention in some schools, I feel that Model UN’s are actually a more worthwhile endeavour as they focus on working with people of opposing stances and forming a common resolution rather than arguing solely for one side.”

The work at Shawnigan Lake School provides students with the opportunity to discover, debate and analyze global issues with other students. Although most of the program is focused on preparing for Model UN conferences, some opportunities are available to prepare for formal debate competitions on the Island. Students learn many skills, including greater confidence in their public speaking and research skills, a greater ability to build consensus with others on complex issues and to take interest in world affairs.

“Maddy has grown in confidence by leaps and bounds since attending her first Model UN conference last year,” said Shawnigan Model UN teacher, Paul Klassen. “She will go on to university and into life, armed with the skill to analyze and solve problems at a very high level, making her highly qualified for just about any career she puts her mind to.”

Watercolour people not acrylic wannabees Opening of gallery’s second season starts with a reception on Friday LISSA ALEXANDER reporter@pqbnews.com

Two local artists began their artistic pursuits by creating pen and ink barns and other buildings in Alberta. They both felt a strong impulse to go further with their artwork, Greg Swainson dedicating himself to mastering watercolours and Roberta Mebs trying her hand in a number of painting mediums.

Their paths crossed in Sherwood Park, Alberta, 20 years ago when Mebs took a watercolour course from Swainson. And today the two are exhibiting their work in a two-person show at Swainson’s Raintree Studio & Gallery in North Qualicum.

An opening reception will mark the beginning of the gallery’s second season Friday, April 19.

Mebs works mostly with acrylic paints today, but has taken courses in watercolours, acrylics and soft pastel, and also creates some mixed media pieces.

“I’m a smorgasbord person, I’m like that with food too,” said Mebs.

“And see, I could have a hot dog every day,” Swainson joked.

Swainson started painting in 1984, after dreaming about it for years and finally committing specific hours to hone his skills. After teaching commercial art for five years, it was time to start painting, he said, since he figured it would take 20 years to get good and he wanted to do it well in retirement. So after he put his kids to bed he would set out three hours, three times a week, for painting. In his first four months he created 22 paintings.

Although people often think of watercolour painting as light and dainty, that was never Swainson’s style, he said.

“That vibrancy in acrylic, you can have in watercolour if you choose to have it,” he said. “And there’s been some criticism from acrylic people that sometimes people who paint that way are really just acrylic wannabees,” he laughed. “That’s not true, not for me at least.”

mercial art in Alberta for 20 years while also teaching watercolour courses, along with being a husband and father of four.

Swainson moved to North Saanich in 2005 and made the move to Qualicum Beach in 2011.

Mebs is originally from Vancouver and as an “air force kid” moved around Canada and into Europe. She remembers living in France and taking a school trip to visit The Louvre in Paris. After meeting her husband in Duncan, they made the move to Alberta when her husband joined the RCMP, and the couple spent 31 years there.

Throughout that time, Mebs took some classes at Red Deer College, as well as with Swainson, and continued to paint landscapes, flowers and anything that caught her eye.

She and her husband returned to Vancouver Island about five years ago and she took a two-year art course at Mala-

spina College (now VIU) in Nanaimo.

Mebs kept in touch with Swainson and a couple years ago received an email that he was moving to her neck of the woods and opening up a gallery.

Swainson said he always had the goal of creating an art gallery in the back of his mind.

“I never anticipated it could happen until we saw this place,” he said. “The dream was to have a place out of the way where there’d be some traffic going by and you could have something open and see your garden and wander through. It’s just exactly what I always dreamt it would be.”

Last year, Swainson and his wife Joan opened Raintree Studio & Gallery located at their home on Highway 19A, just North of the turn-off for Arrowsmith Golf Course.

Originally, the space had a dirt floor with no heat or lighting, but it has been transformed into a bright and spacious gallery surrounded by greenery, overlooking the

ocean. The gallery opened with an exhibition of work by Swainson and Mebs, followed by a successful season that included seven other artists, and ran to October.

This year, Encore, a show and sale of Swainson and Mebs’ work, will again open the season with a reception April 19 from 5-8 p.m. with wine and cheese. The show will continue Thursday through Sundays, noon to 5 p.m., until May 4. All paintings will be 20 per cent off during this show and 20 per cent will be donated to the local Haven Society, providing services to women children, youth and families who have experienced violence.

From May 9 to October the gallery will also feature the work of other painters, as well as woodwork, pottery and floral art.

Swainson also offers classes and painting retreats from the gallery and studio.

Local photographer featured in rainforest film

A multi-award-winning film featuring Nanoose Bay’s renowned National Geographic photographer Paul Nicklen will be screened in Nanoose Bay this Sunday for free.

The film is called Spoil, produced by Nicklen’s girlfriend Cristina Mittermeier, a photographer and conservationist who has worked on other documentaries that have helped bring about the protection of sensitive environments.

The film was created to give the Gitga’at First Na-

tions in the Great Bear Rainforest a stronger voice to show their opposition to a proposed Enbridge pipeline, which would take heavy crude from the Alberta tarsands across B.C. to the coast of the Great Bear Rainforest.

Nicklen was on an assignment taking photographs of the spirit bear in the Great Bear Rainforest when he met some of the First Nations people in the area. At that time, Mittermeier was the president of the International League of Conservation Photographers (ILCP) and was contacted by Nicklen, also a member of the organization. The ILCP teamed up with Pacific WILD, as well as a

number of other organizations, and carried out a Rapid Assessment Visual Expedition (RAVE) in the Great Bear Rainforest.

This involved bringing in 10 internationally acclaimed photographers to create a series of images of the pristine area. At the same time Mittermeier also brought a documentary crew and tasked them with creating a film documenting how the images were created and showing the people and culture of the area.

by Gary and Glenys Hopkins. Although Gary died last summer Glenys Hopkins and her daughter Keri Crossley wanted to celebrate his memory and mark the 20-year milestone with a party. Gary’s Bistro will be serving food at the sold out Buddy Holly ‘50s Rock’n’Roll Dance Party on April 27. In memory of Gary a portion of the funds from the Qualicum Beach Downtown Business Association fundraiser will go towards the KSS automotive program.

There will be two days of breathtaking international ballroom dancing at at the Beban Social Centre in Nanaimo this weekend. Several dancers from the Forever Yung Dance Studio in Parksville will be competing at the Island Fantasy Ball taking place April 20 and 21. The dancers got out their jitters after a dress rehearsal April 12 at Nanoose Place.

Acclaimed pianist Nikolai Maloff will perform with fellow UBC doctoral graduate Sergei Saratovsky at the MAC this Sunday.

move to Vancouver to complete his doctorate studies. It was there he met his supervisor Jane Coop and fellow doctorate student Sergei Saratovsky.

Saratovsky is a Russian-Canadian pianist who has had great achievements both abroad and at home. He received an award from Russian President Vladimir Putin, recognizing his achievements in music, and also performed in the presence of previous Governor General of Canada Michaelle Jean.

Saratovsky took first place at the Porto International Piano Competition in Portugal in 1999 and in 2008 received the award for Best Canadian Artist at the Montreal International

Musical Competition, including many awards in between.

Maloff, Saratovsky and long-time faculty member of UBC Coop, came up with a Russian recital to perform together at The Cellar Jazz club in Vancouver recently. Coop just retired from UBC after teaching there for 32 years.

Vasilieva said when she heard about the recital she asked her son if he could recreate it in Parksville.

“I’m always trying to find something special for Vancouver Island,” she said.

The recital starts at 3 p.m. on April 21 and admission is $15 at the door, including refreshments.

Two accomplished pianists who have both had top-notch training in Russia, will perform music by Russian Masters on one piano at the McMillan Arts Centre this Sunday.

“It’s a very special concert for me and for the Island,” said Vancouver Island Opera’s artistic director Tatiana Vasilieva. “I’m so glad they could make it.”

One of the pianists playing at VIO’s Recital Series this Sunday, April 21 is Vasilieva’s son Nikolai Maloff and the other, Sergei Saratovsky.

Maloff has won a number of major piano competitions around the world and also performed to resounding acclaim as recitalist, chamber musician, and collaborative musician. He holds a doctoral degree in musical arts from the University of British Columbia (UBC) and runs a successful private studio in Vancouver as well as teaches at the School of Music at UBC. Maloff started playing the piano at age 5 or 6 and said he recalls always liking to practise.

“It was never something my parents needed to even remind me to do,” said Maloff. “I just liked it and found it challenging and satisfying.”

Vasilieva said he won competitions everywhere he went growing up and was always exceptional in music as well as in all his studies in school.

The Qualicum Beach Museum is starting to gear up for their annual Trinkets and Treasures garage and plant sale, but they need a few more hands on deck to make it happen.

The event, a major fundraiser for the museum, takes place on Saturday, May 11 from 9 a.m.-noon.

Museum staff are asking members of the Qualicum Beach Historical Society to bring their donations to the museum as early as possible in order that the items may be sorted and priced. Donations will be accepted at the museum any Tuesday or Thursday afternoon from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Starting on May 1-3 the museum will be accepting items from 10 a.m. until noon and every morning from May 6 to 10.

Anyone with heavy items such as furniture please call 250-752-7339 or 250-752-1052, and the historical society will arrange to have someone pick it up. All items must be clean and in good condition. Plants should be brought in early on the day of the sale, if possible.

The sale will not include clothing, computer items, old telephones, or golf bags this year.

It’s a big job and the society is looking for volunteers to help sort and re-box items on Thursday, May 9 and Friday, May 10 in preparation for the Saturday sale. They will also need volunteers on the morning of the sale to help set up tables and tents, put the items out and oversee the tables. Mittermeier calls the United States her home but visits Nicklen in Nanoose Bay between assignments. The NEWS caught up with her last week to talk about the film.

“I’m originally from Mexico where we’ve already housed a number of environmental disasters courtesy of the oil industry, so I felt like I could share what my country has gone through,” she said, “so that a few people can get really rich while the rest of us carry the environmental burden under the

promise of prosperity.”

Spoil won Best Environmental Film at the Vancouver International Film Festival in 2011 and Best Film: Mountain Environment the same year at the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival, among other prestigious awards.

The film, directed by National Geographic filmmaker Trip Jennings, focuses on Nicklen and his quest to photograph the spirit bear and bring attention to preserving the incredible landscape.

Mittermeier said giving a stronger voice to people is something the ILCP focuses on.

“That’s one of the things we do, we speak on behalf of the animals and the people who don’t have the marketing means to let their side of the story be heard,” she said. “And so we felt that was important.”

The film will be shown April 21 at 2 p.m. at Nanoose Place, located at 2925 Northwest Bay Road, admission is free.

Around 300 local students’ voices will ring out together at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre on Thursday, as a Brant Festival event called Voices of Nature begins.

Students at both Arrowview Elementary School and Bowser Elementary School have been learning songs and environmental lessons from folk singers Holly Arntzen and Kevin Wright since October. This is part of the schools’ musician residency program, where the musicians work with the children on environmental stewardship and ecology.

Sheila Spendlove, principal at Bowser Elementary School, said the children learn a lot from the experience with the musicians, touching on science, arts and culture and the concert coincides well with the Brant Festival.

“And we are surrounded by nature and so we celebrate that,” she added. “And it’s spring time and it’s a great way to celebrate that.”

The elementary school students will be divided into two groups to sing songs like Big Change Starts Small about how one person can make a difference and My Roots Go Down about plants, roots and soil. Arntzen and Wright will accompany the students along with their band. Spendlove’s favourite song will be sung en masse. It’s called I am the Future.

The show starts at 7 p.m. on April 18 and tickets are $12, $5 for children and $20 for a family, available at both participating schools and at both Mulberry Bush Bookstores.

Cindy Brown took nylon bags to do her shopping at grocery stores before it became trendy.

She has always been interested in making crafts out of re-purposed materials and for many years she and her husband have been environmentally conscious.

“It is how we have actually always run our day to day lives,” said Brown about herself and husband Roy Timmermans.

The two started up ReThink ReStore in Qualicum Beach in November of last year, offering sustainable products, like a line of compostable food and beverage containers, and many re-purposed items like designer bags and yarn made form recycled blue jeans.

They also offer an alternative to disposable diapers and children’s clothing and accessories, as well as offering classes and workshops.

Brown said she and Timmermans have been involved in business for years, owning their own, and her career involved helping troubled businesses in the Prairies.

When they moved to Qualicum Beach several years ago they knew they wanted to start a business, and not just one that would be a big money-maker, she said.

“We wanted to have a business that we had some passion about and that really is all the little things that we love to do and be part of,” she said.

The lotions sold at the store are made by Brown, and are registered with Health Canada. She said she’s always been into knitting and now sells bamboo and cotton yarns and yarn made from corn and milk.

The best part about the store is the connection to the community, Brown said.

She is pleased they are able to teach people new skills like how to make their own laundry soap and natural lotions, as well as connecting with people consigning items that have been re-purposed.

“You feel more like you are part of the community.”

Barton Dale Longmore October 11, 1942 - April 8, 2013

It is with great sadness that we share the news of Bart’s passing. He passed away peacefully at home during the early morning of Monday April 8 after battling cancer for a number of months.

He leaves behind his beloved wife and best friend, Linda, his three daughters, Alison, Rachel and Elizabeth whom he loved so dearly and their respective spouses, Doug Sasaki, James Pasitney and Tim Ward. Bart’s extended family was very important to him. He leaves behind his four brothers, Bob, Al, Don, and Tom and many nieces and nephews who meant the world to him.

Bart was born in Flin Flon, Manitoba in 1942. He was the fourth of the five boys born to Ed and Joy Longmore. Bart always said Flin Flon was just the greatest place to grow up. His whole family enjoyed sports and had a particular love and talent for curling, ice hockey, baseball and golf. Bart apprenticed as an Industrial Electrician at the mine in Flin Flon. He traveled extensively in Europe and North America, returning to Flin Flon where he met Linda in 1969. They were married in 1971. Bart and Linda’s love for travel and adventure carried them to many places before finally settling in Parksville, BC in 1984 where he and Linda enjoyed gardening, walks on the beach, watching movies and riding bikes.

Bart’s passion for life and people made him loved by all who crossed paths with him. Bart had a strong work ethic but always knew how to enjoy himself and when to stop for a cup of tea or drink some beer. He would always say that the game’s not over until the last rock is thrown.

Bart requested any donations be sent to the BC Cancer Agency or to the Alzheimer Society of Canada in memory of his mother, Joy Longmore.

Bart’s family would like to thank Dr. Noble, the caring staff at the Nanaimo Cancer Clinic, Home Support and community nurses and the Oceanside Hospice Society.

The family is hosting an open house as a celebration of Bart’s life at the Qualicum Beach Curling Club on Saturday April 20, 3-7pm.

Leo Klees

September 8, 1931 – April 8, 2013 It is with sadness that we share the passing of our husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, best friend at his home in Qualicum Beach surrounded by family members. Leo was born in Haarlem, Holland and immigrated to Canada in 1950 full of drive and determination. Leo worked at many different jobs as he made his way across the country. In 1957 he married his best friend Ann upon her arrival from Holland in Canada. Their adventures began in Northern B.C. where Leo worked in Forestry and later in municipal administration in Chetwynd. In 1966 the family, their cats and dog made the journey to Vancouver Island where Leo began his job as administrator for the town of Qualicum Beach. Leo loved Qualicum Beach and treated the town as part of his family. He and the family could be seen driving around the ever expanding community viewing the changes taking place. Leo held this job as town administrator for 27 years. During the first 10 years of his employment with the town he was also the building inspector. During his early years in the community he volunteered as an ambulance driver and eventually ran the program until the provincial government took it over in 1974. He was also involved as a volunteer soccer coach/ referee for more than 20 years and with the Citizens on Patrol program.

Leo had a vision for the town and was committed to its wellbeing, focusing on allowing for green space, flowers and walking paths He was instrumental in acquisitions and negotiations which lead to the town owning the Qualicum Beach Memorial Golf course and Brown Property- Heritage Forest. He was involved in the building of the Town Hall, library complex and other town facilities that benefit the community today. In all of these pursuits, he was helped and inspired by his wife Ann as they worked together as partners on their many projects. After his retirement Leo served three years as councilor. Leo is survived by Ann, his wife of 56 years; children Maureen (Les), Janet (Harry), Gwen (Luc), Lex (Tiffany) and Steven; 17 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren and extended family members and his beloved dogs.

Leo’s legacy of hard work, commitment, love of nature and music will live on in his family. There will be no funeral service but a celebration of his life will take place at a later date. For those who wish a donation could be made in Leo’s

name to North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre.

Thomas James Duncan April 9, 1921 - April 10, 2013

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father and friend. Tom died peacefully on April 10 with his wife, Sheila, and daughter, Lynne, by his side. His first wife, Patricia, his parents, Catherine and James, and all 6 siblings, predeceased him.

Tom will be deeply missed by his devoted and beloved wife, Sheila whose dedication and commitment made it possible for him to remain at home. He leaves behind his loving family, son Peter (Gail), grandchild Jamie, daughters, Lynne (Stuart), grandchildren Jessica and Jeff, and Cathy, grandchildren Calianne and Gina. Tom considered it a privilege to be a part of a large blended family and loved his stepchildren and numerous grandchildren. Nieces and nephews from Windsor, Ontario are saddened by their loss. Missing Tom terribly is his best friend, Bogey.

Tom was a very gentle, kind and loving man who lived his life with integrity, dignity and grace. He was a devoted and loving husband, an outstanding father and friend whose unconditional love and support to those around him will always be remembered and cherished. Tom’s love extended beyond family and friends to include the community.

He spent his younger years devoted to coaching and mentoring youth and he was an active charter member of both the Elks and Optimist service clubs. He was a respected real estate agent who made a difference in many people’s lives. He was a gifted athlete and continued to love sports his entire life, especially golfing with his wife Sheila into his late eighties. Tom’s sense of humour and his beautiful smile will be missed by all.

The family wishes to thank good friends Cam and Wendi for their help and support.

We would also like to thank the wonderful caregivers and nurses who came into Tom’s life. Special thanks to Maurice Fox “Murray The Nurse� for his dedication and friendship. Without these special people, we could not have kept Tom at home.

In lieu of flowers, please honour Tom’s memory in how you choose to interact with others and “pay it forward� with random acts of kindness whenever and wherever you can.

One thing for certain — the Nanaimo Clippers are gunning to be the hosts with the most.

After a short break, the BCHL’s Clippers returned to the ice last weekend in preparation for the upcoming Western Canada Cup, which now serves as the Western Canadian Jr. A hockey championships.

A qualifier for the national championship RBC Cup, the five-team WCC will be played in Nanaimo over nine days (April 26-May 5) at Frank Crane Arena.

As for the mini-camp, which featured all the current roster players along with a mixture of players committed to play with the team next season, current affiliate players, and prospects, it was a hard push to be sure.

The players, divided into two groups — Team Black and Team Orange — started the camp off in Nanaimo last Friday with practice from 8-9 a.m. at Frank Crane Arena. From there the team traveled to Duncan where they played their first scrimmage game at 4 p.m., then returned to the Big Stick Saturday for morning practices and another afternoon scrimmage.

The camp moved to Oceanside Place in Parksville on Sunday with another morning practice and an afternoon scrimmage.

For the entire Clipper organization, from the GM and head coach down through the players, the Western Canada Cup is a second chance to right the ship and possibly vie for a national title.

The Clippers bowed out of the playoffs in the first round this season, losing in five to the Alberni Valley Bulldogs, but will be one of two BC teams in the mix with the host berth, the other being the BCHL playoff champions.

Rounding out the new five-team tournament are the Jr. A playoff champions from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

The Western Canada Cup replaces two previous RBC Cup qualifiers — the Doyle Cup (for B.C. and Alberta) and the Anavit Cup (for Manitoba and Saskatchewan).

The top two teams from the WCC advance to the national championships, the 2013 RBC Cup slated for Summerside, PEI. If there is one player that is extra pumped for this kick at the can it’s Oceanside standout and Clipper stalwart Kyle Kramer, who at 20 is in his fi-

nal season of junior hockey — his fourth with the Boatmen.

An associate captain and one of the Clips’ most valuable players, Kramer led his team in goals this year with 30 to go along with 27 helpers for 57 points in 56 games along with 95 penalty minutes.

“Oh yeah — for sure,” the hard nosed 5’10” 175-pound forward with good hands said with a big smile and a nod of his head when asked if he’s excited about getting back out on the ice in the Western Canada Cup, “It’s in the back of the mind for sure, especially as a 20-year-old playing my last games as a Jr. Hockey player, we’re doing all the preparation right now,” he

said, and anyone in attendance for Sunday’s fast-paced scrimmage game Sunday could see the players are into it.

“We had a nice little break, kind of got refuelled and everything, and now we’re work’n hard and getting back into game shape. It’s looking pretty good right now, all the boys are optimistic in there,” he said Sunday prior to the scrimmage at Victor Kraatz Arena, glancing towards the dressing room, “and we’ve got the team to do it.

“We just didn’t come through in the playoffs, so now we have a chance to step back and look at the things that we did wrong and fix ‘em.”

It was a hail-of-a regular season opener for Parksville’s Quality Foods Royals on the weekend.

On Saturday, wind, rain and hail put a damper on Saturday’s BCPBL opening day for the Royals as their double header against the Mariners in Victoria was stopped after the top of the seventh.

The game, which will be continued at a place and time to be determined, was tied 1-1 when it was called.

“It had been raining most of the game, there was some hail as well, and it started raining very hard in the top of the 7th and the field became unplayable. It

gets to the point of being very dangerous,” said Royals’ skipper Dave Wallace, back for his 19th season with the club.

Back home at Springwood Park Sunday to face the Victoria Eagles in their regular season home opener, the Royals jumped out to a 1-0 lead in game one when newest Royal Alex Hendra-Brown hammered a standup double to the fence at left centre field to drive in Sam Visona, only to lose 4-1 after giving up deuces in the fourth and fifth innings.

Calvin Sandhu got the start on the hill for the Royals in that one and pitched four and a third innings.

It was all Eagles in game two as the visitors blew a 3-1 lead wide open with eight runs in the fourth en

route to a 11-1 mercy win.

“Game one we had some chances (but) we made some mistakes,” said Wallace, adding “we gave them three runs by not making the plays we were supposed to make, but that said we have to score more than one run to win at this level.”

Game two got off to another good start when Visona led off the game with a triple “but it was all downhill from there. We didn’t play well at all -- it was a very poor effort on our part,” said Wallace.

The good news for the Royals he confirmed, “is that we have 46 games left in the regular season.”

Try out lawn bowling The Parksville Lawn Bowling Club throws open the doors for its big annual Open House this Friday and Saturday (April 19, 20) from 1-4 p.m. and anyone on the fence about getting in on the action.

According to PLBC’s Carol Bucyk, “club members are looking forward to greeting interested visitors, showing them around the up-to-date facilities and even taking part in a mini-game of bowls.”

Those attending the Open House, reminds Carol, should “remember to wear appropriate footwear (flat-soled shoes work best), and comfortable clothes that allow for movement.”

After a short overview, visitors will be able to get on the greens and play.

“Visitors will very quickly see that this game plays very differently from bocce or five-pin bowling and much more like curling or chess on grass with lots of strategy, skill

and fun thrown into the mix.”

The club, which boasts over 190 members, operates year ‘round with lawn bowling tournaments, leagues and inter-club play taking place during the summer. During the winter months, members can be involved in darts, crib, bridge and short mat, as well as other seasonal activities.

“At the beginning of the year every team in the league sets out to get to the RBC Cup, that’s the ultimate goal, and any other guy you ask it’s the same thing, so we’re really focused on that,” said Kramer, adding “to have this tournament in Nanaimo is huge; there’s all the right ingredients for sure.

“Being so close to home there’s going to be a lot of people out to watch, it’s going to be exciting.”

Down the road he’s parlaying his hockey skills into a university scholarship starting next year in Rhode Island, “It’s definitely a good opportunity and I’m looking forward to it.”

In the meantime, fellow Oceanside forward Corey Renwick, 18, from Nanoose Bay, just finishing up his senior year at Dover Bay Secondary (to be closer to hockey) was all smiles as well.

“It was awesome; great experience,” the six footer said of being called up from the Jr. B Nanaimo Buccaneers at the trade deadline and playing the remaining 19 games of the 2012/2013 season with the Clippers.

He played two games for the hometown Generals last season.

“I’m looking forward to it for sure — it will definitely be the biggest tournament I’ve ever been in, all the guys are really excited for it,” he said.

“The break that we gave our players was much needed in quite a few ways,” Clipper head coach Mike Vandekamp echoed in the teams press release last week. “It allowed for some players to heal up from nagging injuries, others to continue to rehab from long term injuries, and for all players to refresh mentally.

“This weekend’s camp will provide us an opportunity to get a fresh start on preparations for the upcoming WCC. It will be great to see all of our players on the ice again and especially to see a lot of the players that make up the future of our team moving into next season. It should be a great weekend.”

“It’s an honour to be part of the Western Canada Cup and to host it,” Clipper assistant coach Michael Olson told The NEWS Sunday, adding “obviously we wanted to win our way in, but having said that we have a second life and an opportunity to win the inaugural tournament. That’s our focus right now.”

Storm advance to semifinals

The Upper Island Storm U16 Girls thrashed the West Coast Selects from Maple Ridge 5-0 Saturday in Coastal Cup soccer action.

Part of the high performance Vancouver Island Premier League, the Storm are made up of players from Nanaimo, Comox and Oceanside, with local standouts Sophie Palmer, Bronwyn Kirk, and Olivia Friesen all contributing.

If you want to see a milky-green sea, foaming with spawning herring, or be entertained by a frenzy of feeding sea lions, gulls flocking and eagles swooping — then Beachcomber Park is the perfect beach to visit in spring. In early spring, if you visit at the downing of the sun, then you may additionally be privileged to gaze on the most stunning of evening skies that Oceanside has to offer.

The approach to Beachcomber Park is down a rustic trail found just beyond the lower end of the dirt and gravel roadside parking lot.

Passing a useful though not pretty washroom (probably best to use on the way down) and garbage bin (better than the side of the trail for doggie-poo-bags) there are 12 groomed steps that drop on to the path leading down, in just minutes, to either of the two beaches.

A short way down the trail it divides right and left. Either will take you to a beach. There is also a sign there advising ‘No Mooring Permitted’!

This, however, is not a trail down which any but the most reckless or optimistic would contemplate hauling anything more than a kayak.

Bearing left, the trail winds through woodland to the inner bay. This small crescent of a beach is cobbled and pebbled so in the summer, when the water is warm enough, is deep enough to swim and safe enough for younger children (though care with toddlers would be advisable and beach shoes would be highly recommended).

The same ancient Garry oaks that lean out above the rocks to provide welcome shade on a warm summer afternoon, in late winter are skeletal and stark against a grey sky.

The bay is wide here with one of the many convenient logs providing the perfect spot to rest and gaze across and beyond the water at the snowcapped peaks of Arrowsmith and Moriarty. This day, billowing clouds held the promise of snowflakes before morning At lower tides, the shelf of flat, dark rocks invite the more adventurous to explore out to the point and around to the outer bay. Among the rocks are scattered twigs, reeds and kelp, the detritus of winter tides with the sandstone and conglomerate leading out to the barnacle embossed rocks that encompass countless tide-pools into which children of all ages can happily peer.

On the higher bank of the promontory are two benches and from there the view shifts to more open water. In perpetuity are two benches both inscribed ‘in loving memory’. As this is a place for philosophic contemplation, why not sit awhile on a seat that tells us “If you have a garden and a library you have everything you need’, or on the other that observes ‘If you set your mind to it you can fix anything’.

From here, too, look out to the outcrop of slick weed green rock and the curious standing stone that invites small people to clamber and climb.

Around the point there is the second and wider bay, also with pebbles and cobbles. On the far side of the beach a few cottages sit among the pines above the bay. In the summer, at high tide this is a neat place to swim; in early Spring it is cool and still, the water gently lapping against rock, the rock shadows black in a silver sea.

A red jacketed kayaker paddles smoothly into sight and causes a curious sea lion to raise its head and follow for just a few moments before returning to the all-you-can-eat underwater fest; the grizzling and grunting of the sea lions punctuated with the occasional snarly bickering over a fishy prize. While an afternoon loon moves through the water, the chatter of eagles courting atop a lone pine draw the eye from water to woodland. And so on along the beach to find the earthy and wood-loamed trail that leads to the main pathway back up to the road and parking lot.

What might you see there in late spring?

Most beaches in our region provide plenty for keen observers of all that nature has to offer. Beachcomber Community Park is no exception.

North West Bay is the winter home of choice for several hundred California sea lions – with a few Northern Stellars keeping them company.

Having swum south or north in the early summer and indulged their mating instincts, the males leave their wives to take care of the kids while they return to spend their winters lazing on the logs further up and across Northwest Bay and fishing for their dinner!

Beachcomber Park is a prime spot to observe the grace of these heavy on-shore mammals as they loop through the water, usually in company of seven or eight or more.

If you are lucky enough to be there when the herring are running you

will be treated to the sight of literally hundreds of sea lions thrashing through the water in a frenzy of feeding.

If you rest awhile on a log, you may see harbour seals and even the occasional river otter.

As for birds, most spectacular at this time of year are the bald eagles who have returned from the fall salmon spawning streams and rivers to fish in the bay.

And when the herring come through, hundreds more eagles fly in from up and down the coast.

Gulls as always are aplenty.

Cormorants oft perch on the rocks with their wings outspread to dry.

Herons nest nearby and Common Loons can be heard calling across the water. On a winter afternoon, there was also a flock of maybe 100 little scoters swimming in a disorganised way first following this leader this way and then that leader another way.

What to bring Sturdy shoes are recommended for the trail; beach shoes, bathers and towels in the summer if you want to paddle or swim. Take binoculars and cameras; also a book, sketchpad, summer picnic or snacks (you may find you want to linger longer) and a water bottle.

The nearest store is 5kms away at Red Gap, Nanoose Bay

Directions:

About 15 - 20 minutes from the Island Highway, from Nanaimo take Northwest Bay from Highway 19.

• From Parksville take Northwest Bay Rd from Highway 19a.

• Turn on to Claudet Rd and continue down the hill for approximately 2kms to the Beachcomber Peninsula. Claudet becomes Marina Way (not signed).

• Follow the road another km to the end of the peninsula. At the top of a short but steep little hill there is a gravel parking lot on the left that will accommodate about 10 cars. Just below the lot you will find the entrance to the park.
