If parents already have a RESP for their child set up, they’ve already taken the most important step to get the grant.

If they haven’t set up a RESP to get the grant then the time to do so is now,” said Education Minister Don McRae. To access the new grant, families simply open a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) before their child turns seven. It’s a straight forward process that takes only a short time at a bank or other financial institution. You can also open an RESP securely through an online investment firm.

Make sure you have: • Family member or guardian’s Social Insurance Number.

• Social Insurance Number for the RESP beneficiaries (the child or children).

• One piece of government issued identification for the family member or guardian setting up the RESP. By opening a RESP account - not only is a child entitled to $1,200 from the Province of British Columbia - they can also access other savings grants from the Government of Canada.

Parents then work with the financial institution to make the necessary applications. No matching or additional con-

tribution is required to receive the BC Training and Education Savings Grant.

“Most jobs of the future will require some kind of post-secondary education and that includes jobs in skilled trades and technology fields. Opening a RESP for a young child, and getting the new B.C. grant, is a great way for a family to begin building savings for the future,” said Bill Bennett, MLA, Kootenay East.

By investing in a RESP, the $1,200 provincial grant, other savings grants, family contributions and compound interest will grow over time, making it easier for B.C.’s children to pursue their chosen careers. Having a RESP in place also makes it easier for grandparents and other family members to help put money toward future education.

Winning at business Two College of the Rockies Business Administration students walked away from the Western Canadian International Business Competition as winners.

The competition, held in Kelowna March 22 to 24, had participants from institutions across Canada.

Each team, consisting of four students, participated in a computerized simulation that replicated the running of a computer tablet company. College of the Rockies’ team consisted of Melanie Whitnack, Chief Executive Officer; Jennifer LaVallee, Chief Financial Officer; Kieren Britton, Chief Marketing Officer and Clayton Fenrick, Chief Operating Officer.

Ready, Set, Learn is an initiative that recognizes that families need positive connections with the school system and community agencies that provide relevant resources and information. All public elementary schools in Southeast Kootenay School District will be offering an opportunity for all three year olds to come to their neighbourhood school (children born in 2010 who have turned three by the date of the RSL event). This event is a partnership between the province, the district, and the early childhood teachers in Cranbrook, Fernie, Sparwood, Jaffray, and Elkford.

Ready, Set, Learn will include opportunities such as a tour of the school, a visit to the kindergarten classroom, activities, refreshments, displays or presentations by school children.

Parents and caregivers will receive helpful tips for supporting their preschooler’s learning and development. They will also be provided with information about local services available. Each child will receive a learning kit.

Four year olds, those children that will be entering kindergarten in September 2013, will be invited to Kindergarten Orientation in their neighborhood school.

Chasing Ice coming Submitted In celebration of Earth Day weekend, Wildsight is bringing the documentary Chasing Ice to the big screen in Kimberley and Cranbrook.

Once a skeptic about climate change, acclaimed National Geographic photographer James Balog was shocked at his timelapse images of disappearing arctic ice.

Chasing Ice is the story of Balog’s mission to change the tide of history by releasing undeni-

able evidence of climate change. His hauntingly beautiful videos compress years into seconds and capture ancient mountains of ice in motion as they disappear at a breathtaking rate.

The film is showing on Friday, April 19, 7:30 p.m. at McKim Theatre in Kimberley and on Sunday, April 21, 7:30 p.m. at Key City Theatre in Cranbrook. Admission is by donation.

The Regional District of East Kootenay has an excellent opportunity for a qualified and motivated individual to work within the Environmental Services Department commencing on or about May 13, 2013. This is expected to be a six month employment term.

This technical position will perform a variety of activities related to the delivery of Recreation, Control and Airport services. Specifically, this position will assist with the delivery of the Neighborhood Invasive Plant Program and provide general labour in the delivery of Recreation, Control and Airport Services.

Preferred candidates will be highly motivated team player having demonstrated: • Completion of Grade 12; • Experience and knowledge in the field of invasive plant management; • Working knowledge of the Invasive Alien Plant Program Database (I.A.P.P.); • Working knowledge of Global Positioning System (GPS); • Effective oral communication and presentation skills; • Developed research and analytical skills and report writing capability; • Excellent organizational skills; • Sound contract administration skills; • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions; • Valid BC Driver’s License; • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with consultants, contractors, external stakeholders, advisory bodies and the public; and • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Ideally, the successful candidate will be enrolled in or recently graduated from a post secondary program in Environmental and Natural Resources studies and/or Recreation and Tourism studies.

Equivalent education and experience will also be considered.

This is a temporary, full-time (35 hours per week) position with an hourly rate of $17.65.

Regional District of East Kootenay will receive $23,300 and the East Kootenay Invasive Plant Council will receive $190,000.

“I believe that staying ahead of the growth of invasive plant species in our beautiful region is a major environmental priority. Thankfully, our government agrees, as evidenced by this funding. The money will be put to good use in the East Kootenay,” said Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett.

The funding will be invested in activities such as raising public awareness, surveying invasive plant populations and actively treating highpriority sites to control the spread of invasive plants.

“The ministry’s contribution for invasive species co-ordination is critical not only to our Council, but also to our key partners, especially the many regional committees across B.C. We are all working to strengthen important partnerships that result in fewer invasive species being introduced into local environments.

By working together, we can reduce future management costs and resource losses and help protect our natural landscapes from the damage caused by invasive species,” said Tom Wells, chair of the Invasive Species Council of British Columbia Invasive plants are not native to a particular ecosystem and have the potential to displace long-established species. They can cause considerable economic and environmental damage. Invasive plants may disrupt natural ecosystems, reduce biodiversity, increase soil erosion, alter soil chemistry and adversely affect commercial crops.

This is part of 28 grants being given provincewide to local governments, regional invasive species committees and the Invasive Species Council of B.C. This funding is in addition to the $534,000 already earmarked by the Ministry of Forests, Lands, and Natural Resource Operations for invasive plant control and management in 2013/14.

Ikat Scarf

Eugene Robert (Rob) Durham (83) Passed away peacefully in the Elk Valley Hospital on April 11th, 2013 Rob was born in Raymond, AB October 25, 1929 to Robert and Jean Durham. Rob has resided in the South Country area since 1937. He was a member of the Canadian Armed Forces (PPCLI) and served in the Korean War from 195153. Rob married his sweetheart and true love Dorothy Hogan in September 1967.

He spent a lifetime ranching, farming and logging. Rob was known for his generosity, kindness and hard work. His passion for ranching was shown in the care he gave to each and every animal, his range patrols and sleepless nights during calving season.

Rob was active in many community groups; • An honorary Life Member of Waldo Stockbreeders • Charter Member of Sand Creek Lions Club • Avid curler and Ice-Maker at Galloway Curling Club for several years • Member of Korean Veterans Association • Life Member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #24 Rob is survived by his loving wife Dorothy, son Bill (Michelle), and daughter Lillian (Tim Horne), grandchildren Devon, Charlie, Sydney & Rachel, great-grandson Keedyn, his brother Jim, sister Norma (Ferguson), sister Marion (Paskuski), and brother-in law Andy McDonald. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews and their families.

Robert is predeceased by his parents (Robert & Jean Durham) & his sister Isabel (McDonald).

A celebration of life will be held at the Jaffray Hall on April 15th at 1p.m.

A special thank you to Dr. Shane Soetaert, the nurses & staff of the Elk Valley Hospital. Also thank you to neighbors, friends and family that have been by our side. Thank you for all your phone calls and kind words.

Gerardo Santoro 1935 - 2013 It is with deep sorrow that the family of Gerardo Santoro announces his passing on Thursday, April 11, 2013 in Cranbrook at 78 years of age.

Gerardo was born on April 5, 1935 in Ruvo Del Monte, Italy. Gerardo is survived by his son Vito "Frank" (Stacey) Santoro; daughter Rita (Carlo) Romeo; grandchildren Joseph, Jessica, Morgan and MacKenzie; sisters: Rosa Maruggi of Toronto, Ontario, and Maria Santoro of Rapolla, Italy; brothers: John Santoro of Cranbrook, B.C., Joe Santoro of Niagra On The Lake, Ontario, and Tony Santoro of Sicily, Italy, as well as many other nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving wife Gilda, his mother Margherita Mungiello, father Vito Santoro, brothers Michele Santoro and Giovanni Santoro and Frank Santoro.

Prayers and rosary for Gerardo will be held at McPherson Funeral Home in Cranbrook on Monday, April 15, 2013 from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm. His funeral mass will be held at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Cranbrook on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at 10:00 am. He will be Interred in the Westlawn Cemetery Mausoleum.
