Clean-up is underway at the Suncor Energy terminal on Barnet Highway after about 225 barrels of a biodegradable oil leaked from one of its storage tanks over the weekend.

Suncor spokesperson Sneh Seetal said the leak was discovered last Saturday from one of the

approximately 70 aboveground storage tanks at its Burrard Products Terminal.

The Coquitlam Teachers’ Association is calling for a forensic audit to find out what went wrong but B.C.’s Ministry of Education is satisfied SD43 is dealing with the problem and a plan to eliminate the deficit will be worked out this summer.

“Ministry staff will continue to meet with the district to review their deficit retirement planning and work closely with staff at the district to ensure there’s minimal impact to students and programs,” said Scott Sutherland, a ministry spokesperson.

Education Minister Don McRae was travelling and unable to speak to The Tri-City News before the print deadline, and it will be next Tuesday before more detailed information is available about how the district plans to whittle down next year’s projected $12 million deficit.

Teachers’ union head ‘flabbergasted’ at massive deficit Half the room had emptied by the time School District 43 dropped the bombshell at Tuesday’s board of education meeting: A year-end deficit believed to be $2.5 million had ballooned to $8.1 million based on current trends — and the district was facing $12.1 million in cuts for next year.

The news, when it came, was a shock.

“I am so amazingly flabbergasted I can’t put into words how you could make a $13-million mistake,”said Coquitlam Teachers’ Association president Teresa Grandinetti, who had computed the figure for this year’s projected deficit, which was originally thought to be $7.5 million before the district started making $5 million in non-staff cuts.

“Not one person at this table or the district leadership team feels this is something that is lightly taken. In fact it’s quite heartbreaking,” said board chair Melissa Hyndes, a Port Moody trustee.

“Our job is to accountable,”she said, adding that the board would“make sure we right the wrongs.”

“This is not chump change, this is going to affect a lot of people,” said Dave Ginter, president of CUPE Local 451, which represents SD43 support staff.“Where is there a safeguard so this is never going to happen again?”

Admitting a“public mea culpa,”superintendent Tom Grant acknowledged that the district was facing a

“perfect storm”of financial issues but“unlike most of the other districts, we did not build in a contingency.”

Later, he was blunt about the impact of making $12 million in cuts in a single year.

“I think we all have to be prepared,”he said.

“We will be saying goodbye to some of our colleagues in the budget year.”

“We are confident,” she said. “We have had somebody come in and take a

critical look at practices… we’re moving forward to looking how we provide the programming we have — with less resources, of course.”

She said she wouldn’t make excuses but said the situation is “heartbreaking.”

“We have such a great vision for SD43 and it’s such a great district to work in. For us to be going back to a 2002 situation, it’s kind of devastating,” Hyndes acknowledged.

While the ministry says it will continue to work with the district, it main-

As well, utility fees for district buildings are expected to rise along with special education needs costs and inflation.

Enrolment, which had been growing by about 250 students a year, has also slowed.

The impact of erasing an $8-million deficit for this school year over time plus $12 million in potential cuts for the next school year (2013/’14) is

expected to be felt across the district.

“I understand people are shocked,” Hyndes said. The Port Moody trustee said the burgeoning deficit is not random but the outcome of having more people on staff than there is funding for.

“Mistakes were made,” she said. “No doubt about it. Now that they’ve been made and we’ve seen what the problem is, now is the time we can move to make it right.”

But she promised that new programs, such as Reggio Emilio elementary education and the Inquiry

Hub, would be protected because they are funded by provincial grants of about $6,900 per student.

Still, many people will wonder how this situation could have come to pass in a school district lauded as a “lighthouse”district for the province, with many innovative programs serving its 30,000 students.

‘One of worst deficits in the province,’ says CTA’s Grandinetti

Coquitlam Teachers’ Association president Teresa Grandinetti is characterizing School District 43’s current financial situation as the worst in 25 years, and she and her colleagues are calling for a forensic audit.

“It’s pretty bad, it ranks right up there with one of the worst deficits in the province, I say ever.” Grandinetti told The Tri-City News.

She didn’t want to speculate on how the district will cut $12 million from its 2013/’14 budget; instead, she said she’ll wait to see what the district leadership team says at a public meeting scheduled for next Tuesday at Winslow Centre.

Still, the CTA isn’t taking the situation lightly.

Wednesday night, teachers voted to request an admission of responsibility from the SD43 board of education as well as a letter of apology to teachers acknowledging the emotional and financial impact the cuts will have, and to request a forensic audit of the district’s finances to find out what went wrong.

CUPE Local 561 president Dave Ginter wasn’t

available to comment prior to The Tri-City News’ print deadline because he was attending his union’s convention.

But he came down hard on trustees and administrators at the board meeting Tuesday, telling them they weren’t doing their job and recommending a long list of cuts in the board office, arbitration costs and overtime.

A sports court for Queenston?

Two large lawns for picnickers, playgrounds for tots and older children, and a path snaking around them is the plan for a new Burke Mountain park.

This week, city staff revealed the proposal for Queenston Park, a 1.38-acre parcel in the Smiling Creek neighbourhood, off Coast Meridian Road, that council last December earmarked $620,000 to design and build this year.

The concept for the small, passive park comes after city staff hired a consultant, spoke with the city’s Universal Access-Ability advisory committee and, last month, with dozens of residents at an open house — most of whom backed the park features.

B u t at M o n d ay ’ s council-in-committee meeting — after talking about how to get the public more involved in park planning in general — councillors said they wanted to see more at Queenston Park.

Coun. Craig Hodge, a Burke Mountain resident, said the recently built Millard Orchard Park on Burke has been popular, largely because of its sports court.

Young kids use the swings and slide but, after the age of six, they need a paved surface on which to play ball hockey and basketball, he said.

Coun. Mae Reid supported Hodge, saying the extra $60,000 to build a sports court could come out of casino revenues.

PoMo offers more breaks to heritage homeowners

Owners of heritage homes in Port Moody will likely be able to take advantage of some retroactive changes to the city’s heritage revitalization tax exemption bylaw.

At Tuesday’s meeting, PoMo council passed first three readings of the bylaw amendment in the hopes that more heritage property owners will take advantage of the program.

“We have a really good tax [exemption] program but, unfortunately, a lot of people just don’t know this is available to them,” said Coun. Diana Dilworth, who chairs the heritage commission. “There are financial opportunities available to them in ensuring the historical integrity of their homes.”

The heritage revitalization tax exemption bylaw was introduced in late 2011 “to support heritage conservation and investment in heritage character,” notes a staff report, by lowering the cost of heritage restoration and offering a financial incentive for such projects. The bylaw applies to homes on PoMo’s heritage register and those located in the heritage conservation area in Moody Centre.

Brochures alerting residents in the heritage area to the tax exemption program were distributed last year but no applications for the program have been received. Under the existing bylaw’s regulations, applications for a tax exemption must be received before construction begins.

The new amendment would allow for retroactive applications for projects that started after the bylaw was adopted on Oct. 25, 2011.

“By allowing retroactive projects to apply for a tax exemption, staff expect awareness of the program to grow and new heritage revitalization tax exemption project applications to be submitted in the future,” the report states.

PoMo mayor not happy with lack of notification Most of the product leaked onto the terminal property, she said, but about two litres may have reached Burrard Inlet.

The leak occurred on the portion of Suncor’s property located in Burnaby, just west of the PoMo border.

“This product is not classified as environmentally hazardous but for Suncor, any [leak] of product is not acceptable and that’s why we took a number of immediate steps when we noticed the leak,”Seetal said.

A team was mobilized to drain the tank and dig a trench around it to collect any leaked material, then dispose of it. Any residual product in the leaking tank is then transferred to another storage tank.

Stormwater sewers have also been blocked.

Western Canada Marine Response Corporation (WCMRC) was also contacted on Saturday, and remains on site, to inspect the spill and assist with cleanup efforts.

Michael Lowry, spokesperson for WCMRC, said a crew responded Saturday with the skimming vessel Burrard Cleaner #3 and the Burrard Cleaner #4, which brings containment booms to the site. “[Suncor] has boomed already as part of their plans and we lay down a secondary containment boom, and we put sorbents in to recover some of the products,” Lowry said, adding Suncor is responsible for measuring how much product was leaked and how much of it is recovered.

But Port Moody Mayor Mike Clay is raising concerns about the delay in no-

tifying the city and public about the leak. City staff didn’t learn about the leak until Wednesday morning.

“It sounds like on Saturday at about 8 p.m., workers there noticed an oil sheen on the water in the inlet,” which triggered the spill response efforts and notifications to the Ministry

of Environment, Provincial Emergency Program and WCMRC — but not the city.

“Everybody followed all the correct protocols and... they did everything they should do, but they didn’t notify anybody,”Clay said.

He attended a meeting with Suncor officials Thursday and said they

suspect the tank may have been leaking from as far back as March 24 but the slow leak wasn’t picked up

by Suncor’s daily tank measurements, which recorded the relatively small amount of lost product from the massive tanks as a “statistical anomaly,”Clay said.

Seetal said of the two

litres that leaked into the inlet, about 250 millilitres of the floating oil has been recovered.

“The volume is so thin that that’s why they deployed the booms to capture it, and we’ll also be using other equipment to skim it,” Seetal said.“So you will see the booms there

ri-City public schools will take a hit next year as School District 43 grapples with a projected $12-million deficit after this year’s shortfall ballooned from $7.5 million in just three months.

As of the latest accounting, announced at Tuesday’s board of education meeting, SD43 expects to end the year about $8 million in the hole, not the $2.5 million that was projected after the district identified $5 million in cuts.

Teachers and support workers are understandably horrified by the news — as parents and taxpayers should be.

The board of education and the district leadership team are wearing this disaster, although it’s too late for the blame game. Much has already been said about miscalculations and over-estimations of revenue and enrolment that the district claims led up to this point.

But more explanation is needed. It’s time for B.C.’s Ministry of Education to get to the bottom of this financial debacle with a forensic audit and some eagle-eyed number crunching from independent professional accountants so this never happens again.

he attack ads by BC Liberal supporters haven’t quite dipped that deep into the muck, but give them time.

Slinging mud is a time-honoured political strategy that, until relatively recently, Canadians naively thought was the domain of our southern neighbours — that is, until our federal parties saw that nasty works and unleashed a TV ad arsenal of minor keys, unflattering photos and selective quotations.

And there are no innocents. Provincial parties from across the country and the political spectrum readily employ such tactics, creating villains where there are really only opponents, wars where there should be peaceful differences of ideology.

For instance, for months now, in radio ads aired across B.C., supporters of the embattled

Christy Clark crew have been shining a light on the NDP leader’s nefarious past in the Glen Clark government, the faked memo, etc.

Another radio spot features voice actors — times really are tough in B.C.’s film industry — playing wide-eyed rubes marvelling that Dix once got caught riding SkyTrain without a ticket.

The horror, the horror.

The horror is that anyone would buy this rubbish. If a citizen in the province of British Columbia decided he wouldn’t vote NDP because of the latter ad — as opposed to genuine differences about policy or concerns about Dix and company’s ability to lead B.C. and manage its economy — he deserves to lose the right to vote due to criminal stupidity.

Still, the political potshots got me thinking that anyone’s life contains potential fodder for attack ads.

FACE TO FACE: What interim grade does Prime Minister Stephen Harper deserve?

ay 2 marks mid-point of the Stephen Harper government’s current mandate. Two years have passed since the Tories broke away from the shackles of a minority government and have been able to implement their agenda unfettered.

They have been a good — but not great — two years.

I think there are some files that Prime Minister Harper needs to improve before the next election in 2015, and one of those is the economy. Certainly, the Tories’ job numbers and debt-to-GDP ratio are solid when compared to the rest of the world but for a Conservative government, they’re really not all that fiscally conservative. Between 2009 and 2016, the dynamic duo of Harper and Jim Flaherty will have added $170 billion to the federal debt.

On the economy, I give Harper a C+.

For the government’s handling of social programs, I’ll give Harper a B+. He’s maintaining increases in health care transfers while asking the provinces to be more efficient.

And I’m glad that we finally have a government that understands that jobs and economic development are the keys to get people off welfare

and EI, and to help alleviate poverty on First Nations reserves. A lifetime on the public dole is not desirable for anyone.

On international relations, I give the prime minister an A. In the summer of 2011, Harper talked about a new liberated global vision for Canada, one where we no long try “to please every dictator with a vote at the United Nations.” The Harper government has delivered: We now do what is best for Canada, our values and our future.

Finally, on leadership, I’ll give Harper a C+. The PM’s office clearly exerts too much control on the Tory caucus. While that makes for a cohesive and focussed government, it doesn’t do much for our democratic process.

My overall grade for Stephen Harper is a B. A B isn’t bad but the Liberals are poised to elect Justin Trudeau as their new leader this weekend. He’s a fresh face offering“hope”and a “new style of government.”

More than 40% of Canadians say that they would vote for the young Trudeau if an election were held today.

Unfortunately, a B for Harper might not be good enough to stave off Trudeau-mania in 2015.

ith Justin Trudeau all but anointed the federal Liberal leader and the Tories halfway through their majority mandate, my colleague and I felt it a good time to offer an interim report card for Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Like most interim reports, this one is based on subjective personal observations, often too brief and sparsely substantiated.

• The Economy — D: Mr. Harper’s only economic strategy, corporate and personal tax cuts, both inordinately benefit the rich. As a result, wealth has been upwardly redistributed and the economic disparity between rich and poor is wider than it has ever been.

His government is overtly antiunion. Under Mr. Harper, Canada’s union membership is at its lowest level ever and Canada’s wage earners have not benefitted from increasing corporate profits.

The rich are getting richer, the poor poorer as a result of Mr. Harper’s trickle down policies.

• Social Programs — C–: This somewhat inflated mark reflects the fact that Mr. Harper’s government has not yet abolished or defunded pensions, medical care, abortion or gay marriage. But each of these major programs has been threatened by either cabinet ministers or renegade Conservative MPs.

The government has defunded 87 previously funded service organizations and removed $45 million from arts funding. Support for scientific research has been severely cut, including funding for world-renowned environmental research.

• International Relations — F: Foreign policy is Mr. Harper’s biggest and least reversible failure.The Office of Religious Freedom, the F35 bomber fiasco, stridently taking sides in the Middle East dispute, calling Palestinians names and talking about the“War on Terror”— in half a term, Harper’s government has taken Canada from an internationally respected force for peace to an outspoken partisan satellite of the U.S. • Leadership — B: Just because he is leading in the wrong direction doesn’t mean Mr. Harper is not a good leader. He presents as calm and pleasant, slow to anger or spit harsh rhetoric. Mr. Harper tightly controls a government that could never be accused of transparency; nevertheless, he has muzzled the difficult-to-muzzle remnants of Reform Party and Canadian Alliance social conservatives.

He is a good leader — of a government whose ideas are insensitive, ineffective and tired.

Thus, Stephen Harper’s overall interim performance mark is a D — for depressing.

‘speechless’ at $12.1M school district deficit The Editor;

Re. “School District 43 projects $12.1 million deficit for next year” (tricitynews. com, April 9).

I’m absolutely speechless that School District 43 has announced yet another deficit for the 2013/’14 school year, now totalling more than $12 million since January.

I understand that there have been additional cost pressures on districts and that in SD43, fewer students enrolled than had been forecasted. The numbers still don’t add up, however, and the taxpayer is on the hook for millions of dollars due to poor financial management.

There’s little doubt that SD43 management made numerous mistakes yet there have been few actions to show any significant level of accountability for these

errors.

School trustees (one of whom, Gail Alty, lives on Vancouver Island) has taken a sitting-duck attitude, responding to the financial situation by suggesting they were surprised, and this is unexpected.

I’m calling out the trustees. A board of eduction needs to be constructive, yet critical, of senior management. Trustees need to ask lots of questions and, most importantly, know what’s going on in their organization. I don’t believe this was the case in SD43. Massive deficits should not be a surprise to any strong board.

If this were a business, we would more than likely see resignations. As a parent and a taxpayer, we should be seeing this as well.

District could have saved cash on busing The Editor, Approximately six years ago, I attended a School District 43 board of education meeting to present my opinion on the busing of students. My message was quite simple: The province has clearly detailed rules dealing with the busing of students. Children who don’t meet the existing requirements for busing based on the distance of their home from their school should not be bused to school.

The money spent each year to bus students who don’t meet the minimum distance requirements totalled somewhere in the $300,000 per year range in 2007. Multiply this annual figure by approximately 10 for the number of years SD43 has seen fit to bus such kids and the total is $3 million.

The time has come to enforce bus distance rules.

This holds especially true given the huge budget deficit the district currently faces.The money saved would help put more teachers in our classrooms.

TransLink trades HandyDart for taxis on four of its routes

HandyDart users may find they’re increasingly riding taxis instead, especially if they live South of the Fraser.

TransLink has largely stopped dispatching HandyDart minibuses on four lesser used runs in favour of sending taxis to carry elderly and disabled clients.

The first phase of the changes began April 1 and targeted four routes — Surrey to New Westminster, Surrey to Vancouver, White Rock to Vancouver and Delta to Vancouver.

Money saved by not running HandyDarts on those routes is being used to cover more taxi service, said TransLink spokesman Derek Zabel.

TransLink is using more taxis and fewer HandyDarts in a plan to increase trips with no cut in the overall budget.

The targeted routes tend to have a lot of deadhead time when a HandyDart must return empty after carrying only one or two people, he said.

“It’s not the best use of your resources,” Zabel said. “So if we use a taxi for that it cuts out all the deadhead time.”

He said there will be no change in the total

spent by TransLink on custom transit, but an estimated 7,000 more trips will be made via taxi due to the greater efficiency.

HandyDart buses will still be dispatched to users who aren’t able to take taxis, he stressed.

The strategy of making more use of taxis — which are cheaper to run than HandyDart when few passengers are

carried — was a recommendation of both the independent TransLink Commissioner last year and a provincial audit.

The next phase of changes will convert more HandyDart runs to taxi at times when the service isn’t heavily used, mainly evenings and weekends.

Taxis already accounted for about 21,000 custom transit trips a year dispatched through HandyDart, or about 2% of the total.

Last year TransLink scrapped a plan to phase out subsidized taxi rides for HandyDart clients after heavy opposition.

Jane Dyson, executive director of the B.C. Coalition for People with Disabilities, said she doesn’t object to the planned changes.

Poet laureate’s entry dips into PoMo’s history

Megan Edmunds loves to write, so much so that the Grade 11 student at Gleneagle secondary school has to laugh at how worn down some of the keys on her laptop computer have become.

The Port Moody teen’s treasured piece of technology houses the two novels she has already written and the “hundreds of thousands of words” she has crafted into poems and other stories.

So it’s not surprising that Edmunds, who this week was announced as Port Moody’s Centennial Youth Poet Laureate, hopes to use her prize money to buy a new laptop.

“I use it to write in the library and I write in the park — I love that,” Edmunds said.

Port Moody Public Library organized the poet laureate contest, in which PoMo teens were invited to submit two poems related to the city’s history, as part of this year’s centennial celebrations. Edmunds’ award-winning poem,

titled “Taking Root,” focuses on the idea of home — and how that can change.

“Growing up in this area... I was always given the opportunity to just really appreciate everything about where I live — the outdoor spaces, the schools and libraries, I would always be writing stories and playing outside,” Edmunds said of her childhood.

“But when you move, you don’t automatically have that feeling and

sense of security in the place you can always go back to,” she added, noting “Taking Root” is about the transition from a house being a space you live in to a place you can truly call home.

The poem draws a parallel between a young girl who comes to Port Moody in the early railroad-building days, and to a modern girl experiencing a move of her own.

Taking Root

By Megan Edmunds She sits with hands pressed into soft dirt— It will remember that shape long after she is gone.

It will file every fingerprint, every outline of a bone or vein, into the roots which lace away beneath her feet.

And although she doesn’t know it, with her face tilted up towards the sun and her eyes closed against the world, this dirt knows many hands.

Crying softly into her palms, she sits on a railroad track, an edge which she knows she can stand from easily if that familiar chugging approaches from behind or in front, it does not matter.

Yet there is no sound, not beyond the persistent drumming of a woodpecker into the bark of a tree.

With her eyes closed, hands pressed, and lips sealed, it can almost be mistaken for something more.

Because this all happened before, too.

Past & present

Her handprint, it is tucked away as well, deep in the dirt, mixed with the few tears that fall as she thinks about all that she left there.

The drumming of a woodpecker reaches her, as if through her feet.

She puts a hand to her heart and does not dare open her eyes, does not dare move from this place which is somehow beginning to sound like home.

She dries her tears.

“We moved houses recently and it was not far at all but there was that subtle moment when you stop calling your place a house and start calling it home,” Edmunds said — often a rather mundane moment that isn’t always noticeable at the time. “I think that’s so beautiful that you don’t really notice it, it passes unobtrusively through your life.”

Edmunds knew a bit of Port Moody history but did some added research as she brainstormed ideas for her poem.

“I knew some of the basic things, like the importance of the railroad,” she said. “There’s something so romantic about it and the connection to the rest of Canada.”

As PoMo’s Youth Poet Laureate, Edmunds read her poem at Tuesday’s council meeting and will appear at various centennial events throughout the year. Her poem will also be included in the centennial time capsule.

The contest’s runnerup was Colin Fehr, a Grade 12 student at Heritage Woods secondary (and a former columnist for The Tri-City News).

All of the finalists’ submitted poems will be on display at the Port Moody library throughout April, and online at www.library.portmoody. ca/youthpoet.

A 24-year-old employee of the BC Liberals will fly the party’s flag in Port Coquitlam in the upcoming provincial election.

Coquitlam resident Barbara Lu, a graduat e o f A rc h b i s h o p Carney regional secondary school, was named Thursday as the party’s candidate to run against the incumbent NDP MLA, Mike Farnworth.

A political science grad from SFU and church youth leader, Lu told The Tri-City News she has been a party member for about a year and has worked as an operations assistant at BC Liberal headquarters since September.

It will be her first time seeking a political seat and she said, “I’m doing it because I want to give back to my community. It has been an aspiration of mine for many years to represent my community in Victoria.”

Church offers tax help Don’t sweat your tax filing, there is free help out there

Those who don’t make a lot of money needn’t worry about having to pay to get their income taxes done, thanks to a Revenue Canada initiative and the help of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Trinity Chapel in the city of Port Coquitlam.

The chapel is offering its quarters each Saturday through the end of the month from noon to 6 p.m. so that those such with a gross income of $30,000 or less (or $40,000 for couples) can file their tax forms for free via in tax preparation sessions assisted by a half dozen financial experts.

Among those qualifying for free help are single parents, individuals on income assistance, pensioners, new immigrants to Canada, students and low-income families.

“The response has been very good so far,” said Trinity pastor Steve Obetoh, whose chapel first opened its doors to

those seeking free assistance March 2.

Obetoh said it’s difficult to say exactly how many people have since come to the chapel for the available aid but noted the numbers are growing higher with the April 30 personal income tax deadline drawing nearer.

“As we get closer the numbers will definitely increase,”Obetoh said.

Bursaries support School District 43 graduates The Royal Canadian Legion, Port Coquitlam Branch 133, is offering eight education bursaries to students attending public and private high schools in School District 43.

Four bursaries in the amount of $2,013 each will be awarded to qualified applicants through the Legion Poppy Fund.

Children or grandchildren of ex-service personnel are eligible to

apply. As well, four bursaries in the amount of $2,013 each are to be awarded through the Branch 133 Education Fund for applicants who have no military or Legion affiliation.

ritics have written lately about the burden baby boomers and seniors will become as they age.

“Experts”have predicted drastic increases in medical costs as these boomers become old and infirm.

Older Canadians will form an increasingly larger part of the population and some will develop chronic medical conditions that didn’t have time to develop when people died younger.

But the concept of aging is changing dramatically, too.

Zoomers — boomers with zip — are not content to lounge in their rocking chairs until infirmity puts them in wheelchairs or sends them to an early grave.This old image no longer applies.

Through their consumer spending, zoomers and seniors substantially improve Canada’s economy for all age groups.

Seventy per cent of over-45s use the internet and buy more online than any other age group.

Many give unpaid aid to their elderly parents.

They are the largest group of volunteers, contributing millions of hours of unpaid work to sports organizations, charities, community and health organizations.

According to Investors Group 2010, 60% of boomers provided an average of $3,675 per year in financial assistance to adult children no longer in school.

Some are delaying retirement and delaying

downsizing their homes, accepting the need for intergenerational homes to provide space for their aging parents and their dependent adult children.

Many older Canadians delay retirement and continue working. In 1996, the proportion of people over 55 working bottomed out at 22%; by 2008, it had risen to 35%.

What conclusions can we draw? In spite of being major contributors in their younger years to the economic well-being of Canada and rightfully expecting to be cared for if needed in their later years, boomers and seniors continue to contribute. Far from being burdens on the Canadian taxpayer, they are valuable contributing members of society.

Watching other scientists and researchers at work on the trip, Jessa got the science bug. But it’s her work raising funds for a school in Kenya at Best that spurred her interest in HIV research.

“I’m interested in learning about things from other perspectives,” Jessa said.

At least that’s the future according to a group of Grade 9 students from Coquitlam’s Centennial secondary school.

Last week,Tony Liu, Rosie Lu, Kevin Tse and YuXin Zhang were awarded honourable mention for their work pushing the boundaries of today’s PC by the Toshiba/National Science Teachers Association ExploraVision Awards Program.

The students, with coach Karen Borges and mentor Syd Kreitzman, competed with 5,000 students from across North America to predict what technology might be like 20 years from now.The students in Centennial’s Honours Science 9 class hypothesized about a faster computer processor using code other than binary.The hexadecimal optical computers would be incredibly fast, changing the way the world communicates on a global level, the students argued.

The students won a computer for the school as well as a camcorder for themselves.

A Dr. Charles Best secondary school student who explored one of the coldest regions on the planet in an environmental expedition to Antarctica last year is now exploring the world of molecular biology.

Selin Jessa, a Grade 12 student at the Coquitlam school, is off to Chicago later this month to compete for the top prize in the 20th annual Sanofi BioGENEius Challenge after winning second prize in a Canadian competition Tuesday.

The soon-to-be grad said she was thrilled with the win although nervous to explain her work with HIV proteins before a group of scientists and other professionals.

“I’m really excited.

I think I only stopped shaking a little while ago,” Jessa told The TriCity News from Ottawa, where she had just received her award. “I’m excited to go and present my research, and meet other young scientists.”

Jessa’s project involved university graduate-level research complexity, says mentor Zabrina Brumme, an assistant professor at Simon Fraser University who oversaw her work.

Jessa engineered a mutant version of an HIV protein, allowing her to learn and apply various techniques in molecular biology, including molecular cloning, DNA sequencing, cell culture and flow cytometry. According to Brumme, Jessa’s study could be used in future publications from her lab to contribute to greater understanding of the

Langley’s Waterstone to release next phase

Appealing to the downsizing market As the baby boomers get older, many of them are looking to find a singlestorey home that they can lock up and leave when they decide to go away for awhile. e take many things for granted today, often not fully appreciating the amount of research, hard work or even the fascinating history behind some of our garden food plants. Take the garden pea for example. Our parents and grandparents planted them but their history dates back a bit farther – pea seeds were found in an Egyptian tomb at Thebes.

Garden peas or Pisum sativum, are thought to have originated in the area around Pisa, Italy where they grew wild. The Greeks and Romans served boiled peas as a light refreshment during intermissions at their theatre presentations. Peas were a favourite early vegetable among Europeans and various cultures adapted legends about peas. In Britain, a pod containing nine peas was considered lucky. Peas were also used as one of the many cures for warts. Each wart was supposed to be touched with a pea, that was then wrapped in paper and buried. As the pea decayed in the ground, the wart was supposed to disappear.

In the language of flowers, the pea is a symbol of respect and it’s the birthday flower of Feb. 17. The garden pea we all know and enjoy today, was developed in England and was one of the first crops planted in the New World.

Garden peas are one of the most widely grown and most healthy of all garden vegetables.They are rich in nutrients, containing phosphorus, potassium and vitamins A, B and C. Peas are high in carbohydrates but fortunately, low in calories. One cup of peas has only 45 calories.They also contain nutritious amounts of fibre, folic acid, amino acids and protein.

Peas are a cool crop vegetable and as soon as all danger of heavy frost has passed, they can be planted. In Scotland, peas were never sown until the first swallow appeared, while

in England, an old ditty advises to“Sow beans and peas on David and Chad (March 1st and 2nd), be the weather good or bad”. Although many good gardeners plant peas early, you can space the plantings out to enjoy peas right through the summer.

Peas prefer a well drained, shallow, sandy soil that both dries out and warms up quickly.

They also like a new location in the garden each year, if possible. Peas do not thrive in acid soil and an application of Dolomite lime is essential for both peas and beans. Also, avoid using compost. Many seed companies are promoting the use of nitrogen inoculants with pea crops. These are simply granules of live nitrogen-fixing bacteria. In general, they improve the growth of peas and are supposed to increase crop yields.

Peas should be planted about 2 inches deep and about 2 inches apart. For maximum space usage, plant in wide 3 foot rows, keeping each row about 18 inches apart. Raised beds are beneficial to many garden vegetables and peas are no exception. Soil levels, raised 6 to 8 inches above ground level, will raise the temperature of the soil from 8 to 13 degrees Fahrenheit.

There are a number of good pea varieties and it can take you several years to try them all. I’ve seen many old-timers grow beautiful crops of Telephone peas on poles, which makes a fine garden feature but most of us simply don’t have enough room in a small garden. ‘Little Marvel’ is an old dwarf pea that requires very little staking. I think, however, that the best dwarf peas are the ‘Sugar Snap’ varieties. ‘Sugar Ann’, ‘Honey Pod Dwarf’ and ‘Sweet Snap’ are three award winning varieties and their flavour is superb. They are also great grown in patio pots. The great feature of these peas is the fact that you eat the pod and all and they never get bitter or old tasting.

Peas are an early cool crop and they can be planted now. They will grow quickly to provide you with their uniquely delicious flavour.

Two Tri-City groups got a pre-election handout this week when the BC government doled out grants for community sports programs.

Th e C o q u i t l a m Ducks Volleyball Club of Port Coquitlam and the Tri-Cities Movement Therapy Society of Coquitlam each received $1,000 through the Local Sport Program Development Fund, which is administered by viaSport.

The cash is designed to help create new sports programs or to expand existing ones so that more residents — especially those with challenges — can take part. The Ducks will use the funding for its 12/13U House League while the society will put its money towards its ACRiX.

Terry Fox annihilated the home team 41-0 in their junior rugby season opener on Monday at Gleneagle Secondary.

In the opening frame, the young Ravens’ squad struggled with some of the rules and were penalized often for being over zealous in their pursuit of the ball, said Terry Fox coach Jorge Knizek.

“However, once they were able to start capitalizing on their opponents’ mistakes, their superior physical presence allowed them to dominate the affair,”added Jorge.

Terry Fox’s Jordan Seney overtook the Talons line twice from in close, giving his team a 12-0 lead going into the half.

In the second period, Isaiah Stevens and Sean Stewart made their way through to the Talons’ end zone on multiple occasions securing more points for the Ravens.

The Ravens’ relentless drive on the pitch reflected the final score, 41-0. Knizek noted the Man of the Match Honours went to Ravens’ player Taylor Poitras for some truly outstanding work in the forward pack.

Next week Como Lake will be swarming with youngsters as they lace up their sneakers to get ready, set and go running around the Coquitlam park in the 34th annual Como Lake Relays.

On April 17 and 18 about 2,000 Grade 4 and 5 students from throughout School District 43 will participate in the event, the largest of its kind in B.C. Last year’s event, which would have been the relay’s 34th year running, was cancelled due to the teacher’s dispute that saw them withdraw from extra-curricular activities.

The relays are designed to encourage student participation in running activities and to spur kids on to improve their

overall physical fitness.

The event’s popularity means organizers have to split the event over two days, both running from 3 to 5 p.m. rain or shine.

Students are organized into teams of four, with each member running the 1.2-km distance around the lake. Each participant receives a ribbon for their efforts.

The Como Lake Relay Committee reminds the general walking and running public that the Como Lake trail will be very crowded with students and teachers on the afternoons of April 17 and 18. Anyone wishing to cheer the runners on is welcome to attend, but the public will be asked to stay clear of the trail itself. spayne@tricitynews.com

This past weekend, the Under 18 Metro-Ford Barca defeated the Abbotsford Mariners by a clear-cut 4-0 margin in a BCSPL league match. Leading the way for Barca was forward MATT JONSEN who not only scored 3 excellent goals, but also assisted on teammate’s Luke Griffin’s marker with a wonderful cross. Matt Jonsen worked extremely hard for all his goals and battled valiantly against the big Mariners’ defenders throughout the contest. For his excellent performance this past weekend MATT JONSEN has been named Coquitlam Metro-Ford Male Player of the Week!

This past weekend, the Under 18 Metro-Ford Fusion dropped a heart-breaking 2-1 decision to Coastal FC in a BCSPL match. The game was tightly-contested and well-played by the entire Metro-Ford squad. However, defender NADIA KARMALI stood out as she displayed some excellent defensive and offensive skills. Her overlapping runs down the right flank and her precise crosses caused problems for her opponents during the entire match. Defensively, Nadia was rock-solid and held the vaunted Coastal FC forwards at bay with her tough tackling. For her excellent performance this past weekend NADIA KARMALI has been named Coquitlam Metro-Ford female player of the week.

PM cheers tops at int’l event

There are some highspirited teenagers skipping around Port Moody secondary this week, celebrating their first place finish at the Sea to Sky International Cheer Championships.

The junior and senior teams from Port Moody stood tall against 30 other cheer crews from across Canada and the northern U.S. in the animated competition at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

Port Moody secondary cheer co-coach Jodi Yorston said each team put on two performances over the two-day competition — each worth 50% of their final score. Stunts, pyramids, jumps, tumbling and dance were all part of the routine, as well as a cheer section.

After their first event on Friday, Port Moody’s junior team, undefeated all season, was confident with its dexterous performance. Meanwhile, the senior team needed some morale boosting.

The senior squad chose a theme of redemption for their performances, in an effort to shake off last year’s second place finish at the same competition and same venue. Empowering anthems such as Christina

When the pom poms settled and it was announced that the Port Moody squads had won their respective divisions, the girls’ excitement could not be contained. “Oh my gosh, there were lots of happy tears, jumping up and down and screaming,” recalled Yorston.

Yorston cheers for the Absolute Icons team from North Vancouver, while her school co-coaches are members of the Vancouver Allstars based in Port Coquitlam.

The Port Moody squads had also stuck around to watch their mentors execute their stunts.

Marge was a long time resident of Port Coquitlam. She passed away at the age of 70 at Maple Ridge Hospital on Monday, April 8th, 2013 after a lengthy battle with lung cancer.

Momâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lifeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fulfillment was cheerleading at her kids and grandkids sporting events, her work and friends at Austin Pharmasave & Kmart, and watching â&#x20AC;&#x153;her boysâ&#x20AC;? (Vancouver Canucks). Marge is survived by her children Darren (Kelly), Karen (Johnny), Katherine, grandchildren, Jenn, Katie, Paige and Keegan, son-in-law Lance. She is also survived by her siblings Ken (Gladys), Randy and Vivian (Fred). She will be sadly missed by many other in-laws, relatives and friends, far too many to mention. She knows who you are.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, July 6th, 2013.

Coquitlam Metro-Ford Soccer Club (CMFSC) is one of the province’s largest and most successful soccer clubs - offering both recreational and elite programs to approximately 3,500 youth and adult players.

A leader in the soccer community, CMFSC is financially stable and well organized.

Our philosophy is “Soccer for Life” and our mission is to develop future soccer fans and community volunteers. The club operates under the leadership of a dedicated, volunteer Board, the stewardship of Technical Director Sara Maglio and countless volunteers.

We pride ourselves in developing a player’s full potential and passion for “the beautiful game”, regardless of ability. We support the CSA’s Long Term Player Development Model.
