READERS’ CHOICE AWARDS
Thursday, March 28, 2013 - Black Press
Welcome to the 2103 Readers Choice Awards The results of our inaugural Readers Choice survey are in. You’ve taken us on a virtual tour of Cranbrook and Kimberley, highlighting your favourite people, places and moments.
Some of the results were surprising, some were expected, some were … well, read on, and see for yourselves. We have also excerpted some of the results, providing details about
some of the people, places and things that have stood out in the survey. Hundreds of readers of the Cranbrook Daily Townsman, Kimberley Daily Bulletin and Koote-
nay Advertiser participated, revealing the depth of experiences one can have in Cranbrook and Kimberley. The categories range through all manner of busi-
nesses, restaurants, services, entertainment centres, places and people. You put forward your picks for most beloved citizen, your favourite City Councillor, your favourite bartender,
your preferred driving range, what you think is the best neighbourhood to live in or the best place for a first date — all aspects of Cranbrook that make us who we are.
Beloved citizens: Three who’ve made a difference Barry Coulter
Readers were asked to choose Cranbrook’s most beloved citizen, and as we can see, these are individuals who see themselves as inseparable from the community they love. Earlier this year, Cranbrook mourned the passage of Ruby Sinclair, who despite her absence is with us in our hearts. Readers chose Ruby as Cranbrook’s most beloved citizen. Sinclair’s love of Cranbrook led her to become one of Cranbrook’s most recognized volunteers, and one of the most wellknown and respected
people in the community. Everyone who knew Ruby saw how she demonstrated her love for community with her actions. There was never a more dedicated volunteer. She arrived in Cranbrook with her family in 1961, and immediately set about making it a better place. Ruby worked as school secretary at T.M. Roberts Elementary and then at Laurie Jr. Secondary (now Laurie Middle School). She retired in 1983, and assumed her inimitable career as a volunteer — at Fort Steele Heritage Town, the Key City Theatre, the Cranbrook Visi-
Ruby Sinclair tors’ Booth, the Hospital Auxiliary, wherever people needed a helping hand. Sinclair was named Cranbrook’s Woman of the Year by the Canadian Federation of University Women in 2001, and Volunteer of
Bud Abbott the Year by Volunteer Kootenays in 2008. Ruby was also one of the more notable fans of the Kootenay Ice. Bud Abbott polled a close second in this category. Since Bud arrived in Cranbrook some 50 years ago, he
Vicki Dalton has come to be regarded as one of our most prominent and respected citizens. Bud was among those who spearheaded the drive to save the old Masonic Hall in Cranbrook from destruction — this legacy is
with us in the form of the Studio Stage Door and a vibrant local theatrical community, among whose population of actors Bud is first among equals. There’s a lot more to Bud than just acting. He has been a strong voice for community improvement and the betterment of the lives of its residents through his involvement in a number of organizations: the East Kootenay Mental Health Association, Meals onWheels, the Cranbrook Rotary Club, to name but a few, as well as his personal initiatives — many of these on behalf of seniors.
Bud was named Cranbrook’s Citizen of the Year for 1992. Bronze medal citizen Vicky Dalton has an impressive resume of working on behalf of the disadvantaged in our community, an outreach worker and poverty advocate, offering aid and assistance through her work with the Women’s Resource Centre, the Food Bank, ANKORS and other organizations. Vicky was instrumental in getting the community garden going in Cranbrook. She, along with Velma Mckay, was named 2011’s Woman of the Year by CFUW.

It’s a political world: Readers vote for locals
Barry Coulter
We in the East Kootenay are proudly political, happily opinionated, engaged and activitistic. So when we inquired after who our favourite politicians are, our read-
ers waded into the fray with sharpened pencils. Choices for favourite local politician crossed jurisdictional boundaries. Bill Bennett polled first. The two-time Presi-
dent of the Cranbrook and District Chamber, three-term MLA for Kootenay East, and Cabinet minister with several portfolios in his time, this colourful politician is a populist indeed.

Wayne Stetski, Mayor of Cranbrook took second place, just over one year into his first term as mayor. Stetski makes himself and his ideas accessible to Council and to the public, and always has a smile for everyone. In third spot for favourite politician was Norma Blissett, the BC NDP’s candidate for the 2013 election. The Cranbrook forester and educator has obviously struck chords with a wide swathe of folks in her short time in the public eye — it bodes to be an interesting provincial election coming up in May. Speaking of Council, we also invited readers to vote for their favourite City Councillors. Denise Pallesen topped the list. The two-term Cranbrook Councillor and owner of Nutter’s Bulk and Health Foods has been a strong advocate

for downtown Cranbrook, for small business and for women in business. Cranbrook Council Gerry Warner came in second in the polls. The retired Townsman jour-
nalist has impressed voters with his effectiveness and independence one year into his first term. Cranbrook Councillor Angus Davis took bronze. The longest-
serving of the current Cranbrook Council, Angus is known for his storytelling and common touch. He’s a strong advocate for seniors’ issues.

When polled for best local athlete, readers responded by nominating a sibling duo of former professional hockey players and a skier who has overcome the odds to make his mark in on the World Cup circuit and the Paralympics. Lotus Books in Cranbrook took the golden vote for local bookstore, followed by Cole’s and Pages. Pictured above is a special celebration held Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012, marking the Lotus’s 40th anniversary and the four businesswomen who have operated it since it opened as the Book Shoppe. Original owner Tommy Wheeler, who opened the store in 1972, was not present for the photograph, but in attendance were Elaine Doran (left), who ran the store from 1989 to 2000; Joanne Belanger (right), 2000 to 2012; and current owner Erin Dalton, pictured with Rosey the shoppe cat.

The only thing better than getting your morning coffee fresh and hot is having the person who serves it really care about the start of your day. Nolan Wiebe, a staff member of Tim Hortons at the Tamarack Centre, not only cares about the start of your day, he wants the rest of your day to go smoothly — which has garnered him a Reader’s Choice award for Friendliest Staff.
“You meet so many people. Plenty of tourists. I had a family from South Carolina come through here and they would sit and look out the window at the mountains,” said Wiebe. “They would say it was amazing.” Wiebe puts the credit for his attitude in his personal belief system. “I’ve learned to have a positive outlook on life. What transformed and changed my life was accepting Jesus Christ as our lord and

The amount of customers his store gets between 7 and 10 a.m. is staggering. “Those are the peak times and sometimes it gets pretty wild here,” said Wiebe. “I like to joke, ‘if it was any busier, we’d have to call it Tim Hortons.” Besides the regulars who already look forward to Wiebe’s gentle sense of humour, visitors to the area have experienced his brand of service.
“I like to meet and greet people,” said Wiebe. “There are so many wonderful people in this community.” Wiebe has been in the city for about six years, moving from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. For the past four years he has been working at Tim Hortons, first at the original store and then moving to the Tamarack Centre. Wiebe starts work at 7 a.m. and regular visitors to the store know that it can’t always be easy to

It is no secret that in this economy, some people need a little help to make ends meet. Without the help of the Cranbrook Food Bank Society, some community members would slip through the cracks, depriving the city of a valuable resource. Jackie Jensen, along with numerous volunteers at the Food Bank, recognize that having proper nutrition is a right, not a privilege, in a country as wealthy as Canada. Because of this,
across the country each month nearly 900,000 people are assisted by food banks. And there is no typical food bank user. They range from young families to people with jobs whose wages don’t cover all their needs to those living on a fixed income or those with disabilities. And keeping up with this demand is not easy. In the past few years, more than half of the food banks nationally have had to cut back on the size of the hampers given due to increased

need without a general increase in food donations. In Cranbrook, Jaffray, Wardner, Yahk and the RDEK Area C, the Food Bank Society provides around 4,500 hampers and are in constant need of donations to keep up with demand.
Because of the tireless work done by the Cranbrook Food Bank Society in making sure that there is a facility that will ensure that no matter what happens, a person can still be fed with dignity, it is truly deserving of a Reader’s Choice Award.
Salvation Army, from Page 23 This should come as no surprise, as the Salvation Army helped more than 1.8 million people in this country and Bermuda last year. As to why they do this, Brian Peddle, commissioner and territorial commander, summed it up. “The Salvation Army believes that everyone is of immense value and deserves to be treated with dignity. Our desire is that each person we serve walks away with new hope, feeling important, worthy and respected.” If you want to help the Salvation Army to help others, it asks you
to answer these key questions: 1. Call your local Salvation Army, ask the question “what do you need?” and get the specifics involved. 2. Choose a start and end date for a toy/food/ clothing drive. 3. Decide where you’ll collect the donations. 4. Set goals and encourage people to help you surpass your goals. 5. Use local social media to reach new audiences. 6. Give your contacts updated totals. The goal of course, is to help the 1 in 11 Canadians living in poverty to live a better life.
