As a member of the Rotary Club of Meadow Ridge, I am part of both a business and social network that enhances my sense of selfworth and my well-being. This allows me to share and to help others! Others? As a Rotarian I have the power of my Rotary friends, and the Rotary International organization, to give help to causes where I
see fit, locally and internationally - knowing that ALL assistance and money will go directly to where it is needed. An example of this is all expenses for the annual Duck Race are covered by Rotary Club of Meadow Ridge, Rotary Club of Haney and Duck Race sponsors. Society? As a Rotarian, I have a platform to promote high ethical standards in business. I have the opportunity to work towards world peace and to fight deadly diseases such as polio. Society benefits from the networking and the voluntary labour of 1.2 million Rotarians, representing all nationalities, all races, all religions, all creeds, all colors. In many schools we introduce our Rotary Code of Ethics, the Four Way Test, to grade 6 and 7 students, in the hope that when needed, this may help them make better lifeimpacting decisions. than 1.2 million business men and women whose purpose is “Service above Self.” Our very own small club of approximately 35 members has been helping in this purpose locally in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, raising funds and supporting the growth of sports infrastructure, supporting youth with scholarship bursaries, sending candidates to youth leadership programs and assisting youth groups in their own fundraising through our now annual Duck Race event (in partnership with our sister club the Rotary Club of Haney), and supporting many other local events and projects.
We have also helped on the international scene over the years, sending funds and/or equipment as needed in support of disasters, or worthwhile projects around the world, often coordinated with other Rotary clubs and Rotary International. We are currently helping young children in Nunavut by partnering with the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program, where young children receive a new book each month until they are 5 years old, to introduce them to reading prior to entering the school system.

100 Years of
Awesomeness We congratulate Rotary Clubs in British Columbia for a century of great work – benefiting local communities and global interests alike. Our own local clubs are also robust and active. The Haney Rotary Club celebrates 60 years and the Meadowridge Rotary Club marks their 25th year. Rotarians spread goodness and we think that’s awesome. We are proud to stand among you.
Our club meets every Tuesday at 12:00 noon at the Bella Vita Restaurant located at 22471 Lougheed Highway, Maple Ridge, and we would love to have you visit us for our lunch meeting. We welcome guests to arrive a few minutes early to take advantage of networking with our members. More information about our Club can be found at www.meadowridgerotary.ca.
LAWYERS, NOTARIES & TRADE-MARK AGENTS What is Rotary and what do they do? Over 4 years ago I made a presentation on youth to the Rotary Club of Haney. After meeting such extraordinary people of different ages, experiences and various walks of life; I was immediately intrigued. We all had one thing in common; to “make a difference” in our communities, with people and around the world. As a service organization we connect as people through fellowship; raise funds through our various fundraising events and club activities to help others. Our Wednesday meetings are more like family dinners surrounded by inspiring leaders and conversation that leads to transformational change.
Keesha Rosari
Rotary has helped to revitalize our community connections through key fundraising events including our Ladies Night, Men’s Night, Golf Tournament, and Duck Race. Our motto is “Service Above Self” and there are many of you who already demonstrate this in your daily lives. Maybe you commute for work but need a connection to your own community of Maple Ridge and Pitt meadows. President Haney Rotary Club
If you want to surround yourself with a fun group who support one another, enjoy laughs over dinner; share ideas and find ways to help others; your invitation has been extended. Join us and experience our evening Rotary Club of Haney! www.haneyrotary.org.

Our community boasts two Rotary Clubs - Meadow Ridge and Haney. The Rotary Club of Haney was chartered May 1, 1952. Jim Hadgkiss was a founding member of the Club and its first President. In recognition of Jim’s community and Rotary involvement, the Club introduced the Jim Hadgkiss Award in 1994 to recognize a Rotarian that has made a significant contribution to the Club - a person who has truly made a difference. The Club meets weekly on Wednesdays at 6:30 pm at Meadow Gardens Golf Club. The Rotary Club of Meadow Ridge was charted in March 1990, sponsored by the Haney Club. The Club’s Rotarians

Object of Rotary First formulated in 1910 and adapted through the years as Rotary’s mission expanded, the Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
1. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service.
2. High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society.
3. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business and community life.
4. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Rotary has been involved in the fight to eradicate polio since 1985. As early as 1988 there were an estimated 350,000 cases in more than 125 countries. In 2012, there were 140 cases reported in three countries.
It’s a disease that most of us note only once in our lives: at the time of a simple inoculation that few will even remember. And yet, when the first polio vaccine was introduced 57 years ago, it came at a time of fear and even panic. Polio, short for poliomyelitis, is an infection that

What does Rotary mean to me? As a long serving member of Rotary, I have been invited to write a few words describing what Rotary means to me. Rotary means meeting every week with a group of likeminded local business men and women who come from all corners of the local community. We meet Wednesday evening over dinner at Meadow Gardens Golf Club. While eating we discuss events in our lives and in the community. We form bonds of friendship that over time have some very interesting opportunities. Since the “ aims and objects” of Rotary are to serve the communities’ greatest needs, we of course review how we can best meet those needs. As a long serving member Rotary means many things to me: • Rotary means raising funds to build playgrounds. • Rotary means presenting scholarships every spring to assist local students in their quest for higher learning. • Rotary means how Canada’s Governor G e n e r a l D av i d J o h n s o n w a s able to attend University as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar. • Rotary means buying books for youngsters in Iqaluit.
• Rotary means raising funds so that we may support the Cancer Society, The Salvation Army, to name only two. • Rotary means knowing that all of the money we raise goes directly to one of the many worthwhile organizations we support. • Rotary means knowing that our group of members in the two local Rotary clubs is an important part of the worldwide fellowship of over 1.25 million Rotarian in 34,000 clubs in 125 countries...
Being a member of this worldwide organization that has touched, and continues to touch, the lives of citizens in this community and in every corner of the world is what Rotary means to me.
Dick & Aline Drew Dick is a past Rotary District Governor
Meadow ridge rotary events Since its inception in 1990, the Rotary Club of Meadow Ridge has supported local and international projects with fundraising efforts. Two key events have contributed significantly to our community.

Testimonial I was recommended Haney Automotive by a friend a while back and decided to try them out when the water pump blew on my car. They were professional, affordable, and fixed my car in no time. Above all, it was nice to see an independent family run business with a friendly atmosphere in this day and age of chain stores. A+ all around and I don’t think I’ll ever take a car anywhere else!! Chris Patch 18/07/2012
Wine Festival The Wine Festival is a yearly event where local and international wine and beer makers display and expound their wines. This event includes wine and beer tasting, silent and live auctions, 50/50 draw, great live music and a culinary showcase featuring local restaurants. All proceeds go to local projects and groups supporting arts, culture, heritage and environmental initiatives.
Sports Banquet
The Sports Banquet is held each year to honour a local individual as a HomeTown Hero. Thirty-four local sportsmen and women have received this prestigious honour during the last 21 years. Funds raised during this event, totaling $500,000 over the period, benefitted youth baseball, ice hockey, football, soccer, lacrosse, kayaking, ball hockey, track & field and more. Every year representatives from professional sports organizations, including the BC Lions, Vancouver Giants and the Vancouver Whitecaps as well as many in attendance from our HomeTown Heroes’ roster, attend this event.

Founder of Rotary The first Rotary Club was formed when attorney Paul Harris called together a meeting of three business acquaintances (mining engineer, coal merchant and tailor) in Chicago. The first meeting was held on February 23, 1905.
Your local Rotarians have been hard at work to improve the world both locally and further afield. Those of you who read the newspaper on a regular basis will be aware of the many public facilities, specifically sports facilities, where Rotarians have donated more than a half million dollars to provide our children with the means to stay out of trouble and learn new life skills such as sportsmanship, honesty, self-discipline etc. Few of you will be aware of our efforts to improve the future of our fellow Canadians who live in Nunavut, often under very dire circumstances. I cannot begin to describe the overwhelming difficulties of overcrowding, poor housing and above all effective and meaningful education with no hope for a promising future.
There is a wonderful program promoting literacy among the very young in Nunavut. Children who are exposed to books and where the parents will read to them at bed time tend to perform much better in school than those who have never been exposed to books and stories. Dolly Parton is credited with starting a program in 1996 to benefit the children of her home county in East Tennessee, USA. The Dolly Parton Imagination Library’s
vision is to foster a love of reading among preschool children and their families by providing them with the gift of a specially selected book each month at no charge. The organization’s goal is to have children excited about books and to feel the magic that books can create. This program has been replicated by many Rotarians across North America and the UK, but never in the Canadian Arctic, let alone Nunavut. The Rotary Club of Meadow Ridge and Rotary Club of Haney have funded this program for the community of Repulse Bay, Nunavut where the average age of the population is less than 18 years and has an extremely poor record of of kids dropping out of school at an early age, even before entering high school. It is our expectation that we will see an improvement in school attendance and success in future years. A bit about Nunavut and Repulse Bay Nunavut is the least populated and largest area of the provinces and territories of Canada. One of the most remote and sparsely settled regions in the world is spread over the area the size of Western Europe. It is known to be the northernmost permanently inhabited place in the world. The population in Repulse Bay is 945 according to the 2011 census, an increase from 748 in the 2006 census. The community continues to rely on traditional sealing, fishing, hunting, trapping and carving as well as tourism for their livelihood. Repulse Bay is known for its Inuit artists, especially carvers creating small animal sculptures out of ivory, soapstone, marble and antler.
Paul Harris’ vision and memory is celebrated by the awarding of Paul Harris Fellowships which represent the highest honor that a Rotary Club can bestow on a member of the community. People who have been awarded a Paul Harris Fellow have demonstrated that they exemplify one of the most famous of Rotary’s mottos - Service Above Self. If you see a Paul Harris Fellow award in someone’s home or office, we encourage you to take a moment to find out more and to congratulate them. It truly is an honour, not given lightly.

We are able to teach youth the value of giving back and provide them with the opportunities to experience this themselves. We support our youth and young adults through leadership opportunities and training, working on local and global service projects and by allowing them to take the reins and handle their own fundraising initiatives in support of their projects. New Generations is the umbrella of many Rotary sponsored programs throughout the entire world, that shapes our future of leadership by giving them the resources to grow through programs like: RYLA Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Each year, young people around the world attend Rotary-sponsored leadership camps or seminars. Groups
YAIL Youth Adventures in Leadership For youth aged 15 to 17. Young people develop their leadership and networking skills among their peers. Youth Exchange A Rotary sponsored program for ages 15 to 19. This year more than 7,000 young people will have the chance to live in another country for a year with host families and see the world from a new perspective. The values are experienced not only by the students involved but also by the host families, sponsor clubs, receiving high schools and the entire community.
Adventures in Citizenship Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Ottawa, the program gives youth aged 16 to 18 the opportunity to explore how parliament works and how it shapes our country. Y.E.S. Youth Experiencing Service A Rotary sponsored program for Grade 11 students to engage in 80 plus hours of local volunteer service to then embark on an international service project trip. Through monthly planning meetings and fundraising; students work together to make a difference in someone’s life and maybe find a new direction for their own. continued on pg 31

There are things we take for granted, including the ability to cook our food on a stove. In the remote village of Chiblac Palmira, Guatemala, villagers cook their food over open indoor pits, which in addition to being a fire hazard, are unsafe for the many rambunctious children and responsible for a host of respiratory ailments.
