‘The Girls’ bring artistic touch to catering Janice Hayward Black Press Inspired by seasonal, local, and fresh food, three Cumberland amigas became culinaryadventure partners to cater your events, with a global twist. Kita Navo, Linda Shaben and Marianna Laviolette bring their roots and travel influences to Gourmet Girls Global Catering, a Cumberland business they started together in 2011. Navo, Shaben and Laviolette had met and worked together at a local restaurant. When that restaurant changed ownership, Laviolette says their creativity was held back. That is when the idea of a catering business was spawned. “I am an artist. I cannot stick to the same old stuff,” says Laviolette. Listening to the ladies talk, it is obvious they are bursting with energy and ideas. Laviolette brings Mexican magic to the mix, Navo adds a measure of Israeli influence, and Shaben infuses creations with Lebanese love. They chuckle and refer to their kitchen creations as Med Mex

— a combination of Mexican and Mediterranean cuisine. “We are inspired by fresh food,” says Shaben. “We have a reverence for food,” adds Navo. “It has to be made with love or it doesn’t taste good.” These creative women work with the seasons, harvesting herbs and canning fresh, home-grown or local ingredients for future use. All agree preparing their own canned goods is costly in time, but well worth it. “We also make our own bread and our own crackers,” says Navo. “We create our food from the ground

up, from scratch.” When the Gourmet Girls need other products, they turn to local suppliers for their bison, fish, sausages,

sprouts, cheese, and more. Regular clients call them The Girls. The Girls will cater to two people or hundreds

The city is forecasting a $3.6 million budget shortfall for 2012, according to preliminary fig-

ures. That’s up substantially from the last estimated budget deficit of $550,000 back in December. The picture looks bleaker now because of a change in the prop-

erty assessment value of the defunct Catalyst mill site. The BC Assessment Authority announced early last month that Catalyst no longer meets the requirements of a major industrial property, and

has been reclassified as business/ other, which means a significant reduction in Catalyst’s property taxes. That decision results in a loss of $1.8 million in tax revenue for

2012. Included in the deficit is a $1.1 million tax shortfall carried over from 2011, plus a $1.3 million increase in costs related to contract commitments and inflationary increases, said Laura Ciarniello, the city’s general manager of corporate services. If the city were to maintain the current level of services it provides to citizens, the tax rate would have to increase by 24 per cent in order to make up the $3.6 million. The loss of $1.8 million from Catalyst alone, equates to a 12 per cent residential tax increase. To put that into perspective, Ciarniello said a one per cent residential tax increase would bring in $150,000 in revenue for the city. With the opening of the halibut fishing season March 15th the early fishing reports have been varied. In Campbell River the Hump and Shelter Point have been fishing well. Herring with a spreader bar, Mudrakers and Powerbait are working well. Those going after winter springs are fishing Bates Beach, Shelter Point and Kitty Coleman. The Oyster River had excellent water conditions and the period from late March to April 6th had a good numberr of trout being caught from shore Oyster River Trail Closure using silver spoons or silver bodied flies. This catch and release river will have some anglers coming out in the days to come. Some trails have been temporarily closed. Starting this week w the lakes should have s some s good trout action as tr the th weather warms w and the th trout start moving m around. A number of Campbell River angler fishing stocked lake. stocked lakes are fishable from shore and from small boats. I prefer to anchor at a lake where the water deepens from shore and casting black flies can produce catches of fish all day long. A number of lakes have areas where you can pull into a spot unload a boat and go fishing. A number of people are staying for a few days and leaving garbage behind. The Easter weekend saw many campers out at theirr favorite lake and reports of good Garbage left at fishing were coming g Echo Lake out of Beavertail in the Campbell River area.
