Former Miss Trail winners invited home for golden anniversary BY ART HARRISON Times Staff

The weekend downpour, accompanied by warmer temperatures and snow melt, has the City of Trail keeping a watchful eye for debris build-up at its major creek intake sites. Since Thursday, the city has parked its excavator at Trail Creek, by the bocce pits, and has crews regularly checking the creek channel to monitor the “trash racks” for debris. “Monitoring our intakes this time

Trail's Silver City Days celebrates a half-century of civic celebration this year and for most of the past 50 years there has been a Miss Trail chosen to lead the festivities. Apart from a brief period in the early part of the 2000's when no one stepped forward to organize the event, there has been a long succession of tiaras and ball gowns, talent shows and tears of joy. So this year when the organizing committee was trying to decide how they could celebrate the 50th anniversary of the pageant they decided to go big and invite all the former Miss Trail winners back. “It's been a lot of work to go back over 50 years of pageant winners and try to track them down,” explained Trail councillor, Eleanor Gattafoni-Robinson. “But so far, as of today, we think we have 25 women coming.” The committee started with a local word of mouth campaign to start gathering information on past winners of the pageant and eventually enlisted the help of the Trail Historical Society to help with the research. “We've been working on this since 2012,” said Gattafoni-Robinson. “It's been a real history lesson for myself. “We did an Internet search and spoke to family members and really tried not to leave anybody out. We looked for anybody who might have connections and were hoping to meet them all.” The positive responses from former Miss Trail winners has them returning to Trail from all over B.C., a few from Alberta, quite a number who are still local, and even an international Miss Trail. has decreased over the years, and Volpatti said it may be due to the work that has to go into the nomination. He said that the committee requires some history about the entrant on paper, rather than just a verbal nomination. However, one of the biggest hurdles the committee has to deal with, is the humbleness of many of
the nominees. “We have had many people refuse the award because they do not want the publicity,” said Volpatti. “There are so many people in the community who do valuable service, but they do it quietly, and want to keep it that way. The annual honour will be presented on May 8 at 7 p.m. at St Michael’s School.

a four card suit besides clubs, he would bid it at the one-level. South has five card or longer club support, so he could have given a minor limit raise, but he wants the lead for his two doubleton kings. If he had a suit without a stopper, he would have made a limit raise in clubs.

The play: East wins the opening lead with the ace of hearts and returns his original fourth best card. South wins the king. He cannot lose the lead in case the opponents can cash enough hearts. He cashes six clubs and watches the opponents' discards. If they each discard a heart, South may take the diamond finesse. East discards two spades, a heart, and a dia-
mond. West discards a spade, no hearts, and four diamonds. East is guarding the queen of diamonds, so the diamond finesse is not taken. Declarer cashes the king of diamonds and West pitches a spade. If he exits a spade, West will win the blanked ace (an ace made a singleton because of discards) and then return a heart to West. West will cash the king of spades and two hearts. The defense will get three hearts and two spades for down one. Instead, South cashes his six clubs and two diamonds and comes to nine tricks to make 3NT for +400 points.

Shambhala festival buying onsite ambulance
Local

By Sheri Regnier Times Staff
In light of its first fatality last summer, the Shambhala Music Festival committee is exploring ways to improve employee and patron safety. In March, the committee organized a meeting with emergency health services; the Provincial Emergency Program (PEP) team from Trail and Nelson; and Interior Health. “We are just trying to get everybody to the table to talk about how we can mitigate the impact of our festival on the regional resources,” said Alex Chudis, first aid coordinator for Shambhala. At that meeting, Chudis introduced the idea of a private ambulance, purchased by Shambhala, which would stay on site for the entire festival. However, for now, the ambulance cannot be used for any of the 14,000 people who will be attending the festival in August. “From a personal point of view, I think it is a good thing that we are trying to help mitigate the impact of our festival in the community,” he said. “But there are a lot of rules and regulations that need to be complied with, and it is a fine line we walk.” Chudis said that the emergency transport vehicle can be used for the 2000 staff and volunteers, some of who begin set up on May long weekend. “The purchase of an emergency transport vehicle is to be in compliance with WCB and Worksafe BC regulations,” explained Chudis. “We are seen as a camp that is remote from any service in the community (excluding Salmo).” “We have weeks and weeks of work and hundreds of people who are going to be on site during construction,” he said. “And, there are always incidents during construction.” Over the five-day festival, Shambhala has at least two doctors, and 40 registered nurses on site. Additionally, the festival has set up facilities with medical equipment, including heart monitors, oxygen tanks, defibrillators and spine boards. “Every year, we review a mass scenario with all the staff and department heads, to make sure that safety training is up to date,” said Chudis. “All we are striving to do at Shamhbala is improve safety. “And we are just trying to exercise our due diligence by having our own ambulance.” Salmo coun. Jennifer Peel said that Shambhala is listening to the needs of the community with its latest offer of a private onsite ambulance to improve attendees’ safety. “This has been such a struggle for them, and they have gone above and beyond to listen to the needs of the community on this particular issue,” she said. “All they are trying to do is help take the pressure off our community’s ambulance.” Regarding the overdose death last year, Chudis said the safety committee has completed an internal investigation and received the coroner’s report. The festival is currently awaiting a no fault inquest to be completed by the coroner’s office.

The contestants obtain public speaking and presentation experience and are encouraged to volunteer in the community. “When they come in to the program many are timid young women and leave much more poised and know how to present themselves more confidently,” she said. “In speaking to the women who have responded and are coming back, they all seem
to have made a contribution to their communities and I think this program has something to do with that. It’s been an enlightening experience for me.” Of course it has to be fun for everyone as well. Police investigate traffic fatality By Sheri Regnier Times Staff
The BC Coroner, Salmo RCMP and West Kootenay Traffic Services are continuing to investigate a traffic fatality that occurred in Salmo on Sunday. The RCMP press release reports that, just before 9:30 a.m, the Salmo RCMP responded to a crash that involved a single automobile and a parked dump truck on Railway Avenue (Hwy 6) near Third Street in Salmo. According to witnesses, the automobile made a wide left turn onto Highway 6 from Third Street
into the far parking lot on the west side of the highway, said the police report. The car then drove slowly into the rear tires on the driver’s side of the parked (unoccupied) dump truck. The male driver, 52-year old Roger Irwin, was transported to Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital by ambulance, where he was pronounced deceased. In the initial investigation it appeared that Irwin, a resident of Salmo, may have been experiencing a medical condition just prior to the collision.
of the past contestants and there is still organizing to be done once they have final numbers but so far the event is coming together well. “This has been a been a very fulfilling project,” said Gattafoni-Robinson. “I know many of the women still have family roots in Trail but I also think it’s about what they gained from the program and what it brought into their lives that brings them back. “That’s what the program is all about.”

In addition to regular cleaning of the creek intakes, the city has 5,000 sandbags stockpiled in its inventory.

East Kootenay hospital gets $12 million upgrade By Sally MacDonald Cranbrook Townsman
A project first mentioned in the B.C. government’s 2013 budget in February has turned into a $12 million boon for Cranbrook’s hospital. On Friday, April 5, Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett officially announced a $12 million contribution to help Interior Health replace the intensive care unit (ICU) at East Kootenay Regional Hospital (EKRH). It’s 60 per cent of the project’s $20 million cost. The remaining 40 per cent – $8 million – has been funded by the Kootenay East Regional Hospital District board. “It is my pleasure today to announce
the next big thing for EKRH — a new intensive care unit and upgraded electrical system,” Bennett said during the announcement in the hospital’s lobby, attended by dozens of medical staff, hospital volunteers and fundraisers, and elected officials. “All of us are involved in contributing to these improvements: the Hospital Foundation, Interior Health, the B.C. government, volunteers, and in particular the medical staff. As my father would say, you have taken a sow’s ear and turned it into a silk purse. “I recall in 2000, Maclean’s magazine portrayed our hospital as the poster child
for how bad rural health care was in Canada. Today, this new intensive care unit complements a new ambulatory care ward, new diagnostic imaging centre, new emergency room, new entrance and many new specialists.” The $20 million project will consist of a 6,500 square foot ICU with six beds, including equipment. The proposed design includes the capacity to build a second floor onto the expansion at a later date. About 50 per cent of the project cost will go to upgrading the hospital’s electrical system, according to Todd Mastel, Interior Health’s director of business support.

“It’s a rebuild of the electrical backbone in the entire facility, taking the power supply from 208 volts to a 600 volt system, new transformers, upgrading the emergency power system including two new 750 kilowatt generators, as well as making sure we comply with CSA standards for hospitals,” Mastel said during a hospital district board meeting. A request for proposals for the ICU’s design will be issued on Monday. Construction is likely to start by the end of the year. However, because the electrical work must be carefully scheduled, it will take 36 to 40 months to complete, meaning the new ICU ward should open in late 2016. The hospital district approved its $8 million of funding on Friday
morning, just hours before the government announced its $12 million share. In anticipation of the government funding, the hospital district had already budgeted $2.6 million for the project. On Friday, the board agreed to borrow another $5.4 million. “I want to tell you proudly that we did that with no tax increase as a result,” said hospital district board chair John Kettle. “This is one of the greatest announcements I’ve had the privilege to be involved in. “We have it today because it was a team effort. “We handed the ball to Bill (Bennett) and said: sic ‘em. Voters approve new sports facility Vernon Morning Star Those lobbying for improved amenities are welcoming the results of Saturday’s referendum. Out of 8,220 votes, 4,303 Greater Vernon residents agreed to borrow up to $7.5 million to construct a running track and sports fields at Okanagan College. There were 3,917 no votes. “I’m absolutely elated. I was pretty optimistic,” said Bill Tarr, chairperson of the steering committee that promoted the concept to voters. “We did a good job of getting people the information they wanted and we listened to what people needed.” The primary reasons put forward for the facility were meeting the needs of track and football clubs because of the present lack of adequate facilities, and allowing Greater Vernon to host major events. “I am thrilled people see the positive vision and how this will improve the community,” said Tarr. However, many residents expressed concerns about the proposal, including whether another site should have been considered and if a sports facility was needed during economically challenging times. “It was a long process and there was a healthy debate in the community,” said Patrick Nicol, Regional District of North Okanagan chairperson. “There was a lot of enthusiasm on both sides of the issue.” Nicol personally supported the facility and he believes it will benefit future generations. It’s anticipated that facility construction could begin this fall. “The next step is detailed design and then tendering,” said Tannis Nelson, Regional District of North Okanagan community development co-ordinator. The project must be completed by November 2014 as a condition of the Agricultural Land Commission agreeing to a non-farm use on the property which is in the Agricultural Land Reserve.

National Misread numbers lead to lotto surprise
THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - A Toronto woman thought she had won a tidy $40,000 in the April 5 Lotto Max draw, but when she got back home from the store her daughter checked on the Internet and told her it was really $40 million. Maria Carreiro says she ran down the street “like a crazy woman” and checked the ticket at her local store again. Sure enough, all those zeros meant the 51-year-old grandmother indeed had won $40 million. Carreiro ran back home and said she needed a glass of water. She and her daughter were still jumping up and down with excitement as they picked up her cheque today at the Ontario Lottery and Gaming office in Toronto. She says that among other things, after 30 years of marriage she is finally going on her dream Hawaiian honeymoon.

Capsized Canadians rescued
THE CANADIAN PRESS SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Canadian Olympic gold medallist Adam Kreek had to swim underwater to safety when his boat capsized Saturday in the Atlantic Ocean. Kreek, fellow Canadian Markus Pukonen and Americans Patrick Fleming and Jordan Hanssen are back on dry land in Puerto Rico after their boat capsized near the end of an attempt to make a recordsetting row across the Atlantic. The adventurers were into Day 73 of their voyage when their boat capsized about 1,370 kilometres from Miami when the team hit a series of steep waves during a crew shift change. The U.S. Coast Guard deployed two planes, which located the capsized boat. Japanese shipping company Nippon Yusen Kaisha went out of their way and sent a car carrier to pluck the four rowers out of the water. The four were attempting to row more than 6,700 kilometres between the West African nation of Senegal and Miami and set a Guinness World Record. The journey was also an educational and scientific mission.
RBC under fire over hiring practices THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - The Royal Bank of Canada was scrambling to explain its hiring practices to customers Sunday after a media report claiming the bank was employing foreign workers to replace Canadian staff prompted a flood of outrage. Canada’s largest bank (TSX:RY) said it has not hired foreign workers to take over the job functions of current employees, but said it uses outside companies as one of its strategies to improve “operational effectiveness.” Zabeen Hirji, chief human resources officer, said the company is working to find suitable roles for 45 Toronto employees whose jobs are being outsourced. “RBC is not hiring new employees that are temporary foreign workers to do that work,” she said in a phone interview, noting that those who will take on the work “are going to be the supplier’s employees.” RBC said it planned to discuss the situation with government officials.

A spokeswoman for Fantino insisted the minister respected the official languages law. “Minister Fantino respects and corresponds in both national languages, however in this instance he wished to send personalized thank you letters to a few officials,” Meagan Murdoch, Fantino’s director of communications, said in an email. “The fact that anyone would criticize special recognition of hard working officials is simply disrespectful and tasteless.” A spokesman for Fraser’s office would not comment on the specifics of the case until the investigation is completed. “Is a unilingual letter to Ethiopian staff in accordance with the law?” asked Nelson Kalil. “That’s what the investigation will determine. “But in general, the correspondence of the department and the minister must be written in both official languages,” he said. “We’ll have a look at it.” The staffer who raised the alarm believes other questionable situations may arise again in terms of language use even if it is rare for a minister to address employees directly. “It’s kind of like fly fishing,” the staffer said. “He throws the bait and sees if there’s any response. It’s still relatively easy being Green
T
his is the first of a series of policy commentaries on the four main parties contesting the 2013 B.C. election. I’m starting with the B.C. Green Party, which has higher than usual hopes for the 2013 election. It was also the first to put out a substantial policy document, albeit one that is still being debated and altered. Green Book 2013 continues the Utopian positions that only a party with no chance of forming a government has the luxury to put forward. For example, they would double the area of parks in B.C., but take 100 years to do it. Immediately, they would almost double the carbon tax, taking it from seven to 12 cents on a litre of gasoline. Greens would extend this steeply increased carbon tax to industries such as natural gas and cement
production. Leader Jane Sterk told me she expects cement producers and the like to adapt, rather than shut down as their competitive position erodes. And what about the extra billions in carbon tax revenues? Sterk says most should continue to go to income tax reductions, as is now the case, because the purpose is to change consumption patterns, not to increase overall tax revenue. Most, but not all. “We think there is an argument to be made for putting, for a period of time, the increased revenue from the carbon tax into creating the infrastructure that allows people to benefit from a carbon tax,” Sterk said. That means transit, and potentially retrofits of homes and other buildings as well. Tax increase aside, this is essentially the NDP position too. The Greens emphasize wind and geothermal
TOM

power. Sterk faces the awkward task of arguing against hydroelectric expansion. A Green government would cancel the Site C dam project on the Peace River. Sterk says it would only serve as a subsidy to liquefied natural gas exports, which she doesn’t believe materialize as international competitors develop. The Greens’ star candidate, University of Victoria climate scientist Andrew Weaver, agrees. Both point to vast reserves of Russian
gas that may well get to Asia more quickly and cheaply. Sterk said the 35,000 existing gas wells in northern B.C. “are not going to be shut down.” Actually, in the absence of LNG exports, that is exactly what would happen to many of them. The U.S. has its own shale gas supplies, and is B.C.’s only current export customer. Converting transport trucks and BC Ferries to LNG fuel isn’t going to maintain the vast industry blooming in northern B.C. The official Green Party position is to place a moratorium on B.C. gas drilling while a comprehensive water use policy is developed. Current innovations such as reusing municipal wastewater are ignored. The Green platform also demands disclosure of chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing, which the B.C. Oil and Gas
Commission has already done. If one were to design a self-fulfilling prophecy that B.C.’s LNG project is doomed to fail, the Green Party platform would be a good place to start. Reading through Green Book 2013, I’m left with the impression that much of it remains calculated as a soothing message for urban voters who have been convinced it’s courageous to drive their cars down to an anti-tanker protest. If Weaver, Sterk or any other Greens get elected, it will be surfing a wave of protest votes from people weary of the B.C. Liberals and the NDP. It will not be due to the practicality or even internal consistency of their polices. It’s still pretty easy being Green. Sunday studio estimates put the demonic horror remake “Evil Dead” at No. 1 with a $26 million debut. In a tight fight for second-place were two holdovers, the animated comedy “The Croods” and the action flick “G.I. Joe: Retaliation,” both with an estimated $21.1 million. LETTERS & OPINION LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Clarifying some facts on lot sale We are writing this letter in regard to the Glenmerry lot sale controversy. Our daughter, Dionne and son in law, Jake Deadmarsh are the young couple that approached the city (in writing) expressing an interest in purchasing the residential lot in question. Their intent was to build a new home, in which to live and raise their family. What started out to possibly be a pleasant experience has turned out to be anything but pleasant! Of course, every controversy has two sides; as parents we feel obligated to speak out in support of our kids. We have waited until the process has been completed and now feel it is the right time to express our opinion on this matter. To suggest that our kids would ask the City of Trail to close a park, have it rezoned and sell it to them for less than market value so they could build a house, is ridiculous and completely false! Yet, this is what the Committee for Green Space and Justice would have you believe. For this reason we felt compelled to respond. Mrs. Crossman, the spokeswomen for this group, lives directly across the street from the lot and initiated the petition preventing the sale. We believe petitions are an important and fair tool for people to express their point of view; however, the information provided to the public, in order to garner signatures, should be honest. In this case, the flyers that were delivered to homes, our daughter’s home included, and posted next to the petition in several businesses, stated that the City of Trail intended to rezone and sell the “park” to “select individuals” in a “quiet
process.” They then named Jake and Dionne Deadmarsh as the individuals. The implication being that they were given preferential treatment by the city. Nothing is further from the truth! As stated, Jake and Dionne inquired, in writing, about the possibility of purchasing this lot to build a home. Initially the city told them it would likely be a sealed bid process, which was fine with them. As the city was not actively trying to sell this lot, and no one else had approached them in writing, the city’s attorney advised to proceed with the Deadmarsh family provided certain conditions were met. In response to a rumour that someone may have previously expressed an interest in purchasing this property, the city did extensive research to determine if there was any validity to it. They were unable to find any documentation or reference substantiating this. Attached to the sale were the following conditions, which the Deadmarsh’s agreed to: Pay for all Geo Tech costs. Pay for an independent appraisal and to pay the appraised value of the lot. Pay for all costs to service the lot. Take responsibility for having the top layer of soil scraped and removed. Agree to the stipulation they could NOT subdivide or resell. Agree to the stipulation that the home must be set back according to the Geo Tech report. Agree to the stipulation they must build within two years or the lot would revert back to the city With these stipulations and the associated costs the lot would actually cost the Deadmarshs closer to $150,000 not the $109,000 to $115,000 as stated. This is comparable
to any other serviced lot in the City of Trail. For years people have driven by this residential lot, never noticed it, except to see a City employee cutting the grass or perhaps a neighbour wheeling yard waste over the bank. So, our question is this: Why, if this sacred lot is so coveted by so many residents of Trail and area, has no one ever utilized it? The group’s mandate appeared to be inconsistent. What started out as “Save Our Park” soon turned into questions about the process and accusations that the city was some how trying to benefit a select family. Within this confusion, there was also the emotional appeal, stating that if this sale was allowed a precedent would be set and that your neighbourhood park could be next. The Committee for Green Space and Justice now has enough signatures and the city has decided not to take this to a referendum. Our kids will move on and find another property; however, we feel that things could have been handled differently so that a young family was not left feeling as though they had done something dishonest. In her comments in the April 3rd edition of the Trail Times Mrs. Crossman stated, “This is not a petition against a family…” yet, no one from the committee ever contacted Jake and Dionne to tell them that. To them it felt personal. Finally, thank you to those merchants who refused to take sides in a public dispute by not allowing the petition and misleading flyer in their place of business. In our opinion this seemed to be a dispute disguised as a cause. Mario and Vickie Iachetta Fruitvale
Job numbers dip as election nears THE CANADIAN PRESS VICTORIA - Six months ago, Premier Christy Clark was touting British Columbia as Canada’s job-creation engine, cranking out 57,000 new jobs and outpacing even Alberta without selling a drop of oil. Clark told a Vancouver Island economic summit her government’s highly-touted September 2011 jobs plan with its focus on increased trade with China and Asia and promoting liquefied natural gas exports, new mines and exploring innovations in technology
and agri-foods - was working. But it appears the engine has stalled and with a provincial election campaign 10 days away, the Liberals are blaming national and international economic trends for their, at best, fourth-place position among the provinces. The Opposition New Democrats say it’s even worse, suggesting B.C. has dropped to ninth-place, losing almost 35,000 jobs since Sept. 2011 when factoring only privatesector job creation. The Liberals say B.C. has
added 32,300 jobs since August 2011, and ranks fourth in job gains compared to other provinces, behind Ontario’s 90,400 jobs; Alberta’s 57,000 jobs and Quebec’s 53,200 jobs. No matter who is right, B.C.’s Central 1 Credit Union economist Bryan Yu said B.C.’s performance since the jobs plan was introduced has been underwhelming. He suggested the Liberals and New Democrats can argue about who’s got the right numbers but the trend points toward slow job growth.

PEOPLE
IRON LADY
OBITUARIES SHANNON (NEE GRIEVE), ELIZABETH “BETH” — It is with sadness that the family of Beth Shannon have to announce her passing. Born in Fruitvale in May of 1926, Beth was the youngest of May and Will Grieve’s gang of five children. Beth spent all of her early years in Fruitvale. She swam in Grieve’s hole, balanced on the railway tracks, chased the cows home and played among the lumber piles as a child and as a young woman she helped at home and cared for her family until the summer of 1944. That summer Beth was on her way to a wienie roast with a bunch of girlfriends when they spied a very handsome young man leaning up against the wall of the Fruitvale hotel. Beth’s friends dared her to invite the young fellow along and she took up the dare! After the wienie roast that young man walked her home, got a little fresh, put his hand on her knee and was pushed in the creek for his efforts! His name was Johnny Shannon and they were married 4 months later and stayed that way for 59 years. Their love story began that summer day in 44 and it will endure in the hearts of our family forever. Beth and Johnny stayed in Fruitvale and had all five of their children here. In 1967 Johnny decided that he had had enough of working for Cominco and struck out into the field of dam construction. From then on their lives were filled with moving, new friends and travel all over Canada. Beth made a wonderful home in each place they landed and was always the very soul of her family. In 1990 they gave up their lives of adventure to return home to Fruitvale. Beth’s life was caring for Johnny and her children. She always said that she never held a job, which was the farthest thing from the truth. Raising her five kids and chasing about after Johnny from one end of the country to the other was a job and a half and she did it with style,

laughter and a loving heart. Her naiveté (she never did figure out some of those sayings on t-shirts), her sense of humour and the warm gentle love she exuded will be treasured and missed by each of us all the days of our lives. Beth is survived by her children, Ardie (Bill) Thomas, Howard (Val), Debbie (Dave) Leavitt, Wally (Dawn) and Stacy (David) Taylor, her 15 grandchildren, Heath, Aaron, Jarrod, Kirsty, Lance, Chad, Lisa, Rachel, Jeremy, Kristan, Josh, Derek, Danielle, Steven, Brittany and their families, including 16 and 1/4 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her two brothers Fuzzy (Dorothy) and Cliff (Pearl) Grieve. Beth was predeceased by, her brother Elliot in 1960, her mother May in 1975, her son in law Rick in 1982, her sister Jean in 1985, her father Will in 1988 and her beloved Johnny in 2004. A family memorial will be held at a later date. Our family would like to thank Dr. Libby McCoid for her kindness and care. We can never express the depth of our gratitude enough. Also to the wonderful nursing staff on the third floor of the Trail hospital, thank you so very much for your care and concern for our Mom. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the charity of your choice. *** HAMAN, ETTA — passed away peacefully on April 7, 2013. Etta was born in Regina, Sask. Sept. 30, 1916 a few minutes after her twin sister, Edna, weighing just under 3 lbs. She grew up in a loving family and in 1937 married John R. Haman. They moved to Trail to begin their life together. Etta & John purchased and operated the Duncan Dairy. Mom worked hard milking cows, baking bread and cooking meals for the workers, as well as raising her family. In 1959 when John became ill, they sold the cattle and Etta went to work in the office at J. Lloyd Crowe High

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Combative and determined to get her way, Margaret Thatcher divided opinion down the middle in life - and in death. Many leaders lauded Thatcher for her steely determination to modernize Britain’s industrial landscape, even at the cost of strikes and riots, and to stand beside the United States as the west triumphed in the Cold War versus the Soviet Union. Others saw a pitiless tyrant who preferred conflict to compromise. British Prime Minister David Cameron lauded his 1980s predecessor as “a great Briton,” but others - particularly Europe’s socialists who often clashed with her - were less enamoured in their reactions to the death Monday of the conservative icon. Flags at Buckingham Palace, Parliament and across the United Kingdom were lowered to half-staff. Buckingham Palace said Queen Elizabeth II would send a private message of sympathy to the Thatcher family. Government officials began preparations for a London funeral with military honours at St. Paul’s Cathedral next week, followed by a private cremation. “As our first woman prime minister, Margaret Thatcher succeeded against all the odds,” Cameron said
in Madrid. He cut short his trip to Spain and cancelled a visit to France to return to London for the funeral preparations. “The real thing about Margaret Thatcher is that she didn’t just lead our country. She saved our country,” Cameron said, “and I believe she’ll go down as the greatest British peacetime prime minister.” In Washington, President Barack Obama said many Americans “will never forget her standing shoulder to shoulder with President (Ronald) Reagan, reminding the world that we are not simply carried along by the currents of history. We can shape them with moral conviction, unyielding courage and iron will.” And former first lady Nancy Reagan her husband and Thatcher “enjoyed a very special relationship” driven by a common hatred of Communism. “Ronnie and Margaret were political soul mates,” she said in a statement that lauded Thatcher’s “clear vision and strong determination to stand up for her beliefs at a time when so many were afraid to rock the boat.” In Poland, Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said his country should erect a statue of the British leader. In a tweet he praised Thatcher as “a fearless champion of liberty, stood up for captive nations, helped free world win the Cold War.”
JOHNNY ESAW
Famed sportscaster passes
THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - The man considered Canada’s ambassador of amateur sports, who brought football, figure skating and the Olympic Games into the nation’s living rooms, has died. Johnny Esaw died Saturday in Toronto after suffering from respiratory problems, his former employer CTV president Rick Brace said Sunday. “He had the rare combination of being a brilliant business man and incredibly creative. To me he was a mentor and an icon. Canada and the sports world today mourn the loss of a great man,” Brace, who is also the former president of TSN, said. The award-winning sportscaster was a longtime member of Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame, which describes him as “a pioneer, an innovator, and a fervent supporter of our nation’s
sporting achievements.” Esaw “was at the forefront of sports broadcasting in Canada and around the world for more than 40 years,” the organization says. He was inducted into the Order of Canada in 2004. Born in North Battleford, Sask., Esaw started his radio career in his home province before moving east. He made the switch to TV in the 1960s, becoming sports director for CTV’s Toronto station. The first colour telecast of a hockey game - from Vienna - was produced by Esaw in 1967. The beloved broadcaster also convinced the network to carry figure skating at a time when hockey was king, saying the sport would appeal to viewers. The move earned him the recognition of the Canadian Figure Skating Association, which continues to dole
out a bursary in his name. Esaw rose through the ranks until landing the role of vicepresident of CTV Sports in 1974, a job he held for 16 years before he retired. He was also well known as a CFL broadcaster and was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1984. “The name Johnny Esaw was synonymous with the best of Canadian sport, and particularly with the biggest event in our country, the Grey Cup,” said CFL commissioner Mark Cohon in a statement. “His ascendancy to the top of the ladder in broadcasting paralleled the growth of the Canadian Football League. Those who built our league, and all of us in it today, mourn his passing today, and pay tribute to his legacy.”

Greater Trail trio in Frozen Four
SUBMITTED PHOTO
Travis St. Denis, Kellen, and Connor Jones lead the Quinnipiac Bobcats into the Frozen Four semifinal game Thursday. BY JIM BAILEY
Times Sports Editor
Three Greater Trail hockey players are leading the Quinnipiac University Bobcats into uncharted territory. The Bobcats are just two wins away from its first NCAA Div. 1 title, in large part due to Montrose natives Connor and Kellen Jones’ and Trail’s Travis St. Denis’ winning ways. The trio put exclamation points on their respective Junior-A careers by winning the RBC Cup: the Jones’ twice with the Vernon Vipers in 2009 and 2010, and St. Denis with the Penticton Vees last May. This season, the three forwards helped lift the Bobcats from perennial also-rans to the number-one ranked team in the nation, winner of the Eastern Conference title, and Quinnipiac’s first ever berth to the Frozen Four. “The NCAA Div. 1 title would be an incredible accomplishment for us and the team,” said Connor Jones, the top forward in the 2009 RBC Cup. “The RBC experience definitely has helped because it taught us that winning is incredibly hard and the sacrifices you have to give up throughout the year are huge and it really is what separates the winning teams and losing teams.” The Bobcats out of Hamden, Conn. play St. Cloud Huskies Thursday night in the semifinal match in Pittsburgh, Pa. With a win, the team will advance to the Frozen Four final
Saturday against either the University of Massachusettes-Lowell River Hawks or ECAC rival the Yale Bulldogs. “We had very high expectations of ourselves as a team and I think that has been a big part of the season we have had,” said Jones. “Our goal at the start of the year was to win a national championship and we are only two wins away.” The Bobcats’ top line of Matthew Peca and Kellen and Connor Jones has been playing as well as any line in the country of late. Peca had four goals last weekend in the NCAA East Regional tournament, including a natural hat trick over a span of 3:12 in the first period to lead the Cats to a 5-1 win over Union. Peca leads all scorers while the Jones twins are tied for second in tournament scoring with a goal and three assists each, after putting up identical 12-14-26 point seasons, tied for third among Quinnipiac players. “Playing with him (Peca) is almost like having a triplet because he does a lot of things we do, works hard every shift and likes to make plays with pace.” But scoring is not their only asset, it’s what else those top players are willing to do - namely, block shots - that has resonated through the Bobcats’ lineup. “We always block shots,” Bobcat coach Rand Pecknold said at a US College Hockey press conference. “And when I’ve got Matthew

Jacobs rink falls in final
THE CANADIAN PRESS VICTORIA Canada’s world men’s curling championship reign ended Sunday after three years, but Brad Jacobs was still able to put the loss in perspective. Jacobs’s Northern Ontario rink fell 8-6 to Sweden’s Niklas Edin in the gold-medal game. “It’s not like we came out and we curled really horrible,” said Jacobs. “We threw the rock really well. I feel like we curled really well. The ice was a little different. We didn’t catch on to it quick enough. That’s
why they’re holding hands (as champions) and we got the silver medal today. “But you know what? It’s OK.” Edin locked up the win in the eighth end as he stole two points to go up 8-4. After Jacobs pulled within two in the ninth, the Swede was able to run the Canadians out of rocks in the 10. “We’re so happy that we could make enough shots in the beginning to get that good start,” said Edin. Sweden led throughout the game after going up 2-0 early.
Clare on board FROM PAGE 11 The Smoke Eaters are also thrilled to welcome Craig Clare to the coaching staff. Clare, a former Smoke Eater, was named the BCHL Interior Conference co-Rookie of the Year in 1998. He spent two seasons in Trail before completing his BCHL playing career with the Victoria Salsa. Clare also played three years of college hockey in Alberta
with the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. Most recently, Clare has been a coach with the Greater Trail bantam rep team. “Craig’s really in touch with the upand-coming players in our local system, which is huge for our future development,” stated Birks. “I’m happy to see him join our group and am excited to see what he can bring to our program.”

“ U n f o r t u n a t e l y, we didn’t bring our A-game today and we were on the wrong side of the edge,” said Jacobs. “We didn’t give (fans) much to cheer for.” Jacobs’s Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., rink had hoped to complete a fourth-place to first-place run after entering the playoff round with two straight losses, including one to Sweden. He was disappointed that he and third Ryan Fry, second E.J. Harnden, lead Ryan Harnden and alternate Matt Dumontelle fell short in their quest to win the first world crown for a Northern Ontario rink since Al Hackner’s Thunder Bay rink triumphed in 1985. Jacobs was the first Northern Ontario team to get to the worlds since then.

This weekend the Rossland Secondary School senior girl’s soccer team won the Osoyoos openingseason tournament. Their first game was the first time they stepped on a field this year and they defeated Southridge from Vancouver 7-0, Oliver 4-1, Princess Margret from Penticton 1-0 and North Surrey 2-1 in an overtime shoot out. The girls fitness played an important role as 11 of the 12 girls just finished their basketball season and it certainly showed on the field. Back Row: coach Rick McKinnon, Jessica Seminoff, Kaycee McKinnon, Jeanine McKay, Britta Klaile, Joselyn reynolds, Annie Cameron. Former Smoke Eater makes Wing debut
By Times Contributor Former Trail Smoke Eater Dan DeKeyser played in his first National Hockey League game with the Detroit Red Wings on Friday. DeKeyser, 23, penned a deal with the Red Wings Mar. 29 after completing his junior season at Western Michigan University. The Detroit product skated with the Smoke Eaters during the 2008-09 season, tallying 25 points in 58 games played. Seven of his eight goals that season were scored on the power-play. During his collegiate career with the Broncos, DeKeyser was twice named the CCHA’s Top Defensive Defenseman in 2012 and 2013. “We’re extremely proud of everything Dan has accomplished so far in his career and wish him all the best of luck in Detroit,” stated Smoke Eaters president Tom Gawryletz. “To see one of our alumni reach the National Hockey League is a bright spot for our program and it highlights the opportunities the BCHL has to offer.” DeKeyser dressed Friday in Detroit’s game at Colorado. He joins Shawn Horcoff, Garrett Burnett, Steve McCarthy, Travis Roche, Wade Dubielewicz and Brett Skinner as former junior “A” Smoke Eaters to have played at least one game in the NHL.

stomach ailments, skin problems, obesity, sleep problems, difficulties at work or in school, migraines and more. April 11, 2013, is National Alcohol Screening Day (NASD). This year, I urge people who love someone who drinks too much to conduct an anonymous screening of their loved one’s drinking patterns. Screening for Mental Health has created a fantastic website, www.HowDoYouScore. org, where anyone can anonymously evaluate their own or a loved one’s drinking patterns through an online assessment. The website also provides information on treatment
because I haven’t felt well in 17 years. Could you please tell readers in this position to simply say, “It is so good to see you”? That way, I don’t feel obligated to speak about my current condition. -- Sick and Tired of Being Sick and Tired Dear Sick: Your suggestion is a good one, and we hope people will keep it in mind. But we don’t believe these friends actually expect a rundown of your illness, nor are you obligated to talk about it. Greeting someone with, “How are you?” is generally rhetorical. You aren’t expected to respond other than to say, “Fine, thanks,” or some short variation. Because you haven’t truly been well for years, it stands to reason that you would take questions about your health more literally than intended. Dear Annie: Thank you for printing the letter from “Rocky Mount, Va.,” who thought dogs
should be allowed at the funerals of masters who have died. To have a dog at a funeral privately, prior to the public gathering, is a good idea --probably for both humans and dogs. There is a famous painting by Sir Edwin Landseer (1802-
1873) entitled “The Old Shepherd’s Chief Mourner,” depicting a pointer leaning against a casket with its head on top of the casket. It brings tears to my eyes anytime I even think of it. -- Watertown, Wis. Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy
