Affordable Housing report released

After much anticipation, the final draft of the Affordable Housing Strategy report was released and is now available to the public for comment.

The report will be presented to council April 15.

The report is an action item that comes from the ourQuesnel: Integrated Community Sustainability Plan (ICSP). ourQuesnel is a vision, strategic plan and process for creating the future we want for our community. ourQuesnel provides a clear vision on what kind of community our residents and other stakeholders want and sees itself as inclusive and supportive, with equal opportunities for people of all ages, cultures, lifestyles and abilities; affordable housing plays an important part in achieving this goal.

One of the 10 ourQuesnel strategy areas, Housing and Land Use, has a goal of providing citizens with a diverse range of safe, attractive and affordable housing options in neighbourhoods that are mixed, vibrant, livable and increasingly compact and mixed-use.

Over the next three years, the priorities are to improve the quality of emergency and transitional housing options for people in immediate need by keeping current accommodations in good physical condition and adding space for much needed services;Â to provide more supportive housing options for those who cannot live independently (yet) by creating more of these hous-

ing options in safe and stable environments that meet the needs of singles, single parents and seniors; and to provide more low-cost and attractive market housing options for independent seniors and single-income households by implementing incentives to stimulate market development.

Spinal injury, a cure is possible When a person is unfortunate enough to suffer a spinal cord injury they are told in no uncertain terms to get used to it.

Not as bluntly as that, but it’s what is intended.

This type of attitude has existed for far to long, but years ago the thought of cure was not even considered.

Now that has all changed, a cure is possible if the resources are put in that direction.

The problem is that most people that are injured are quite young and easily influenced and are not shown that this way of living doesn’t have to be a lifestyle.

Should they quit doing sports and other activities, absolutely not.

They should, however, be encouraged to get involved at realizing curing this problem is more important.

This doesn’t just apply to the younger people, we older ones must change our way of thinking too.

By not getting involved and telling people that living with a spinal cord injury isn’t the life anyone would choose, we are then saying we don’t care if others do get hurt. Simple as that.

The Spinal Cord Society was started in 1978 when the thought of cure was laughed at.

Never giving up though, they have continued to fight to find a cure for those living with chronic spinal cord injuries.

Though working hard, progress has been slow due to the fact finding a cure must be done in a way that is safe and is not reckless and does not hurt someone more than that person already is.

A lot has been done however and the cure movement is getting more encouraged, as the University of Alberta has become interested once again, as well as the University of Minnesota.

They are both wanting more trials done with animal studies to see if the procedures are safe to apply to human patients.

Canfor president endorses Black refinery I first heard of this concept from David Black a number of years ago.

At the time I was skeptical of its chances. My initially negative attitude was based mainly on my experience of 10 years service on the board of directors of Imperial Oil. Since I was accustomed to the discussion of petroleum economics centered in Calgary, I saw no need for a refinery in Kitimat.

That attitude was based on the fact there had not been a new refinery built in North America in many years. And any needed increase in petroleum production was achieved by expansion of existing refineries throughout North America. But after my service with Imperial Oil, I went on to serve four years at Canfor, which led to my nine visits to China in search of lumber markets.

My exposure to the phenomenal expansion of China’s economy opened my eyes to the true merit of the Kitimat refinery concept. It made me realize that it would not be just another refinery relying on the North America market but rather a refinery that would supply the vast appetite of China for petroleum products.

The challenge will be to draw the attention of Asian investors who would see the value to this investment. It appears that David Black, after many years of effort, is nearing an agreement that could provide the vast capital infusion needed to make this refinery initiative a reality.

The appetite for oil products for all Asia will continue to grow and the Kitimat refinery is ideally situated to take advantage. Asian countries, especially China, are very interested in securing sustainable supply of resources that will flow freely without undue trade barriers like surprises with taxes, regulations or tariffs.

Canada has a good reputation as a free trade country that can be relied on as a dependable source of supply.

Now is a very opportune time to attract the vast investment needed to make the Kitimat refinery go ahead.

from A4 A time frame for human trials is still not confirmed, but that gives researchers extra time to try and perfect their work.

It also provides some hope that work on people will one day be viewed as the only way for treatment.

The Spinal Cord Society has not done this alone. Thanks to business’, employees of business’, the general public and all that have given this cause their interest.

That is how this work has been funded. A simple thank you just seems inadequate; the real thanks will be when, as stated above, human trials will be upon us and people will see the fruits of their labour.

May 4, 10 a.m. from Ceal Tingley Park, The Quesnel Chapter of the Spinal Cord Society will be holding our Walk & Wheel event. All are encouraged to come out and participate, meet some friends and enjoy some refreshments. This is a leisurely stroll if you will, not a competition.

This is our only fundraiser of the year so we encourage those willing to take out a pledge sheet with the hope you will be sponsored to do the river front trail. LNG and Pipelines Will Impact Your Pocketbook With all the propaganda surrounding LNG and the Enbridge pipeline, it’s easy to be convinced by the Premier’s claim that we could be entering a new era of economic prosperity that would wipe out all our debt and substantially reduce our taxes.

However, if these megaprojects come to pass, it will more than likely have a negative impact on your pocketbook.

First, you’ll be impacted by the direct and indirect subsidies your government will give these companies to make these projects economically viable. The fossil fuel industry lives off subsidies — trillions of dollars in subsidies each year from governments worldwide, billions here in Canada and BC. These massive subsidies to some of the world’s most profitable companies take money away from public programs and services. They mean you have to pay more for MSP premiums, insurance deductibles, and other government fees and licenses.

Second, most of the jobs associated with these projects will go to Albertans or temporary foreign workers; the Albertans will pay income tax in Alberta and foreign workers will send the bulk of their earnings home rather than spending it in BC. The rapid and massive exploitation of BC’s natural resources proposed by both the BC Liberals and the BC NDP will mean significantly less return to the BC government than if we developed our resources in a more measured way with BC workers. You’ll have to pay more for public services or get less from your government.

Finally, if the companies racing to get oil and LNG to Asia actually get a higher “Asian premium” price, it just means you’ll pay more for your own resources here at home — that higher Asian market price will raise all fossil fuel consumer costs here, negatively impacting your pocketbook.

I know there are those on both sides of the political aisle that address this as a political issue. And I would disagree with both.

This is a project that can be attractive to all political stripes. Trade unions would see a significant increase in jobs and memberships.

Hospitals and schools across the province would see an improvement in government funding. Business activity, especially in the challenged north west B.C. would be very positively impacted. And those with a concern for the threat of marine spills would see a significantly reduced exposure for the environment.

Based on the huge positive impact this initiative could have on BC, I think the question should not be if we want it....but rather, how can we help make sure that the petroleum world sees this as an attractive way to invest billions of shareholder capital.

Affordable Housing Strategy Report released For Immediate Release April 3, 2013 QUESNEL, B.C. – After much anticipation, the final draft of the Affordable Housing Strategy report was released and is now available to the public for comment. The report will be presented to Council at their April 15 Committee of the Whole meeting.

The report is an action item that comes from the ourQuesnel: Integrated Community Sustainability Plan (ICSP). ourQuesnel is a vision, strategic plan and process for creating the future we want for our community. ourQuesnel provides a clear vision on what kind of community our residents and other stakeholders want it to be and sees itself as inclusive and supportive, with equal opportunities for people of all ages, cultures, lifestyles and abilities; affordable housing plays an important part in achieving this goal.

One of the 10 ourQuesnel strategy areas, Housing and Land Use, has a goal of providing citizens with a diverse range of safe, attractive and affordable housing options in neighbourhoods that are mixed, vibrant, livable and increasingly compact and mixed-use.

Over the next three years, the priorities are to improve the quality of emergency and transitional housing options for people in immediate need by keeping current accommodations in good physical condition and adding space for much needed services; to provide more supportive housing options for those who cannot live independently (yet) by creating more of these housing options in safe and stable environments that meet the needs of singles, single parents and seniors; and to provide more low-cost and attractive market housing options for independent seniors and single-income households by implementing incentives to stimulate market development.

he audit of the Pacific Carbon Trust raises many fundamental questions about the province’s claim to be carbonneutral.

Many people have questioned the scheme which forces public agencies to pay funds equalling $25 per tonne of greenhouse gas emission to PCT, a Crown agency. This money has come from the operating budgets of schools, hospitals and universities.

PCT in turn buys carbon offsets from private organizations so that a wooded area in the Kootenays was saved from logging, in part through this agency.

It is highly questionable to take money from classrooms and emergency rooms to buy carbon offsets. It would make much more sense to give capital funds to various provincial agencies to physically reduce their greenhouse gas emissions through, for example, more efficient furnaces or better insulation.

Environment Minister Terry Lake, who otherwise seems to be a reasonable individual, bought into this and said at a press conference “Who audits the auditor-general?”

He clearly does not believe that there is anything wrong with taking money from schools and hospitals and redistributing it to private corporations which, according to the report, would likely undertake programs to reduce emissions anyway.

The audit indicates that the entire carbon offset program needs a more thorough examination and it should be curtailed until that more detailed examination has been made.

In the meantime, if the government has money it can put towards reducing emissions, it needs to put it towards actual projects within the public sector – not to private corporations and non-profits.

Reducing carbon emissions is a worthy goal. Government has a role to play, but must do so in a way that is seen to be an effective and practical use of tax dollars.

Growing up is hard, watching it is harder

ow does it happen?

OK, fine, I get “how” it happens: days turn into weeks, weeks months, months years and then BLAMO your baby boy is no longer a baby.

In fact, he’s no longer a toddler, or even all that small. He’s now six, closing in on seven, with a penchant for anything high-octane, the ability to make me belly laugh with a simple phrase and a temper I swear he gets from his nana.

It’s already happening, the whole independence thing, the fact I am no longer his first choice for a playmate.

I remember the first time he choose to ride his bike with his buddies instead of making playdough with his mom; I recall clearly the instance he told me “you can make the cupcakes by yourself, I make a mess anyway” as he hopped off the stool and headed for the front door.

Ouch.

I’ve spoken to other moms and dads about the inevitability of our “babies” no longer being babies and surely our conversations are the same ones my mom had, her mom had, and on and on.

I was warned for hours on end about child birth and

I was OK with all of that.

Well except for these stretch marks, they need to GET. But no one prepared me for how I would feel, how my heart would squeeze every time I watched him sleep, or how his snippy remarks and insane skills at driving me bonkers would leave me wanting to rip my face off and slightly in awe.

Or how lying in bed with him Saturday morning, with his head on my chest and his hand in mine would be, by far, the most peaceful place I could ever pray for.

And then, of course, with age comes all sorts of realizations and the linguistic skills to convey these observations.

“Mama? How come you have so much white in your hair?”

“Mama? Your bum is hangey-downey.”

“Mama? How come you have lines even if you’re

And while change is inevitable, I also realize that while I will always think of him as my baby, he too, will always think of me as his “mama.”

“Can you walk me to the door?” he asked this morning.

“Sure, yeah, of course,” I answered puzzled.

We walked side by side, me resting the urge to lick my thumb and wipe the jam from his cheek.

And then I felt his hand slide into mine.

I looked down at him and winked, he attempted one back but only managed to blink both eyes rapidly a bunch of times.

I laughed and he joined me and as he spotted a buddy and I bid him adieu, his hand dropped from mine as he sprinted off.

Walking to the car I heard a rustle behind me and turned.

“Mom!” he huffed as I slowed.

“I love you.”

“I love you more,” I said, bending to kiss him.

It is moments as simple and perfect as those that make walking around for the rest of my life with my heart outside my body so completely worth it.

Losing our freedoms for the sake of love Editor: Re: Archaic beliefs, Observer Editorial, March 29.

The biggest problem I have with your point of view is that this is an issue that does affect me.

There is not only a desire for government approval of this lifestyle and the redefining of the traditional meaning of marriage but also a desire to enforce the acceptance of this lifestyle through the media and even through law enforcement.

These actions are not helpful for a free society.

I have listed a few cases of this type of censorship,

but there are many more examples that are available.

In 2005, Fred Henry, Roman Catholic bishop of Calgary, Alberta was subject to two complaints before the Alberta Human Rights Commission after publishing a pastoral letter defending the traditional definition of marriage earlier that same year. (“Canada?’

Human Rights Beef with Catholics,” Zenit, Feb. 5, 2008). Bishop Henry told Zenit: “The social climate right now is that we’re into a new form of censorship and thought control and

the commissions are being used as thought police.”

In January 2006, Catholic city councilman John Decicco of Kamloops, British Columbia, was fined $1,000 and required to apologize for saying that homosexuality is “not normal or natural” (LifeSiteNews, Jan. 19, 2007).

In his remarks, which were made in a city council meeting, DeCicco was expressing the official doctrine of his church.

The fine goes to two homosexual activists who brought the complaint.

DeCicco was also forced

to issue a public statement that his comments were “inappropriate and hurtful to some.”

DeCiccco told LifeSiteNews, “I’m not against lesbian and gay people, but I don’t agree that I should have to endorse it.”

In February 2007, complaints were brought before the Human Rights Commission in Canada targeting Catholic Insight magazine and priest Alphonse De Valk, a wellknown pro-life activist, for quoting from the Bible and church documents to refute “same-sex marriage.”

The complaint was brought by homosexual activist Rob Wells, a member of the Gay, Lesbian and Transgendered Pride Center of Edmonton.

He accuses the magazine of promoting “extreme hatred and contempt against homosexuals.”

“The basic view of the Church is that homosexual acts are a sin, but we love the sinner,” De Valk says.

Adding that opposing same-sex marriage is not the same as rejecting homosexuals as persons (Canada’s Human Rights Beef with Catholics,

Zenit, Feb. 5, 2008).

Wikipedia says this about a free society, “Adlai Stevenson defined free societies as a society in which individuals find it “safe to be unpopular”.

[1] This can be elaborated in terms of freedom of speech – if people have a right to express their views without fear of arrest, imprisonment, or physical harm.”

It is sad that we are losing our freedoms for the sake of love.

To me it is not worth the cost.

TOM FLETCHER Black Press A partnership led by Shell Canada has filed for environmental assessment of a large-scale liquefied natural gas export facility at Kitimat, the latest step in a proposed energy megaproject for northern B.C. The filing includes a letter from the B.C. government asking Ottawa to delegate the assessment to provincial authorities, along with aboriginal consultation. The federal government must first determine if a federal review is required and then if it can be conducted by the province.

Called LNG Canada, the project is a partnership of Shell, Korea Gas, Mitsubishi Corp. and PetroChina. The proposal has already received a federal export licence that allows export of up to 24 million tonnes of LNG per year for 25 years.

The application describes a total of four LNG processing lines at a site near the Rio Tinto Alcan aluminum smelter and a marine terminal on Douglas Channel at a site formerly used as a methanol export facility. LNG Canada plans to start construction in 2015.

In July 2012, LNG Canada announced a partnership with TransCanada Corp. to build a $4 billion pipeline from shale gas fields near Dawson Creek to Kitimat to supply the LNG plant.

The project description leaves open the choice of electricity supply, with one option being a gas-fired generating station capable of 200 megawatts or more.

LNG Canada is one of five proposals to export gas from B.C.’s North Coast. Others are: • BC LNG Douglas Channel, proposed by the Tatham family of Texas for Kitimat • Kitimat LNG, a partnership of Chevron Canada and Apache Corp. for Bish Cove, on Haisla Nation reserve property • British Gas Group, with port facilities at Ridley Island, Prince Rupert and a pipeline operated by Spectra Energy • Pacific Northwest LNG, a partnership of Malaysian government corporation Petronas and Progress Energy, with port facilities at Lelu Island, Prince Rupert.

It’s Skyfest, Quesnel’s International Airshow, a community event you just might want to invite your friends and relatives to share.

Quesnel Regional Airport is one of this community’s important transportation links, however, the airport is much more than that. It’s a hub for local residents; it’s a connection to the world and a great place to hold an international air show, Quesnel’s very own spectacle.

Quesnel is welcoming the Canadian Forces Snowbirds, Canada’s famous air demonstration team, for six days.

They will become part of the

community and every resident is asked to make them feel welcome; they’re our guests – as are the other performers, visitors and tourists.

Last year, attendance at the airshow was 50 per cent outof-town spectators.

We have the unique opportunity to host an exciting, professional event that not only benefits almost every corner of the community, but also provides excellent entertainment – not something very many communities can offer their visitors.

In addition to the fabulous airshow events, organizers are well into the planning phase, which involves not only the immediate community but the entire region.

Welldeserved honour The Legion hall was packed to capacity at the monthly veterans’ luncheon to witness local veteran Tom Moffat as he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal on Wednesday by federal MP Dick Harris.

Harris spoke of Moffat’s many accomplishments both during the Second World War as a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force Lancaster Bomber Squadron and his many volunteer accomplishments in his home town of Quesnel. Along with serving with several community organizations including the Legion, Moffat also created a lasting photo tribute to those fellow servicemen who gave their lives in the service of Canada, many of which were Moffat’s close person friends.

Harris struggled to find an appropriate spot on Moffat’s lapel for his newest medal as many medals already grace his jacket.

In his acceptance speech, Moffat was his customary humble self, accepting the award on behalf of his fellow service men.

Moffat also injected his own brand of humour to the proceedings, reminiscing about when he

first signed up.

“I have never been beyond Prince George in the north or Williams Lake in the south,” he said.

“And I had only ever seen three airplanes, but had never ridden one. Quite a change for me, but a country boy learns fast.”

Moffat also took the opportunity to credit the great work of the Salvation Army, both during the war and in peacetime.

“They were always there for us.

Most of my letters home were on Salvation Army stationary,” he said.

He also encouraged the crowd to give a little time during the Christmas kettle campaign to help the Salvation Army carry out their good work.

Unexpectedly, at least to Moffat, Legion pipe band member Doug Carey presented the former bomb aimer with a painting of a Landcaster bomber, the type Moffat flew in during the war. Carey told Moffat and the audience this was a promise made to Moffat a long time ago and he was happy to have the painting ready for this occasion.

Moffat recently turned 90.

Sharon and Dave Fookes celebrate 50 years A surprise 50th wedding anniversary, redneck style, was held on March 9 at the Hitchin’ Post Pub for Dave and Sharon Fookes.

The celebration was put on by son and daughter-in-law Walter and Tara Fookes with help settingup and decorating from Shirley Lawlor, Teri Mycock and Leah Seabrooke.

Original wedding party guests consisted of bridesmaid Shirley Lawlor (sister of bride) and best man Bob Schofield, Bob and wife Tiny travelled from Victoria to attend the celebration.

A prime rib buffet dinner was provided by Judy and staff of the Hitchin Post, followed by a red-neck style anniversary cake decorated with personal touches created by Eastman’s Bakery.

Comical yet personal wedding vows were exchanged by the 50year bride and groom with Howie Vestvik acting as minister.

Tiny Schofield also provided entertainment by doing a solo skit of Dave’s first duck hunt. Barry and Cathy O’Brien played and sang a few country songs allowing the red neck guests to dance.

An Alaskan cruise with all immediate family attending was also given as a gift to help celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary.

A big thank you to all friends and family who helped organize and or attended our surprise celebration creating some very fond memories.

he spring-summer season is the perfect time to rid your vehicle of the built-up winter grime from months past.

A thorough wash is important, but so is polishing and waxing. However, many of us don’t know the difference between the two, which means our cars don’t get the ultimate shine and care that they deserve.

It’s important to note that waxing and polishing are part of a simple three-step car cleaning process.

Washing your car, is the first step, then you need to polish.

Polish will restore gloss to dull surfaces and remove the appearance of light scratches and swirls from your paintwork. Step three is waxing, which is the important final touch to seal

in the finish achieved from polish, and protect it against environmental factors such as salt and acid rain.

How do you choose the right products?

When selecting your polish, look for a product that is easy to use, suitable for all paint types and that can address common problems such as light scratches, swirls, stains and blemishes.

When choosing a wax it is advisable to choose the same brand as your polish, since during development manufacturers design products to work together to achieve the best possible result. Waxed surfaces will be highly resistant to deterioration from most environmental contaminants and weathering, displaying a high-gloss finish.

What’s the best application method?

Polishing: If you choose to use a hand polish application, apply product directly with a sponge applicator in overlapping circles and finish in straight lines before treating the next section. Pay special attention to faded paint and painted plastic areas such as doors, mirrors and fenders.

Continue until all of the painted surfaces are coated in a thin even layer. After 10 minutes, when the polish is dry, you can begin to buff with a microfibre cloth.

Waxing: Use a clean sponge to apply the wax, working in sections and in a circular motion – only a thin layer is needed. Continue applying to all of the painted surfaces and you’ll have a protected shine in no time.

Beware potholes and damage

I

f you are hitting the highway or urban streets this spring thaw, there is a very good chance that your vehicle will strike a serious pothole.

Defensive driving remains the best way to avoid costly front-end damage to suspension systems, rims and tires that can result from hitting a deep pothole.

Here are some common sense tips for motorists who want to avoid or minimize the perils posed by potholes this spring thaw: • Slow down. Hitting a pothole at higher speeds increases the potential for damage and loss of control of your vehicle.

• Look ahead. Watch for potholes by leaving plenty of space between your vehicle and the one in front of you.

This provides more time to safely steer around the road cavity. Before avoiding a pothole always check that the way is clear.

• Ensure your tires are inflated to the vehicle manufacturer’s

recommendation. An underinflated tire provides less cushion against a jarring impact and increases the chances of wheel, tire and suspension system damage.

(The recommended air pressure is listed in your vehicle manual and on your vehicle placard, which is commonly located on one of the inside door posts, or inside the glove compartment or fuel door.)

• Watch out for pools of water in the roadway and, when possible, avoid driving through them. An innocentlooking puddle can disguise a deep and dangerous pothole.

Driving through a pool of water at speed can also cause hydro-planning.

• Do not brake when striking a pothole. Braking shifts weight to the front end, causing a harder, more jarring impact. Also, grip the steering wheel tightly.

Hard impacts can jolt the steering wheel out of your hands and cause loss of control.

Potholes form when snow

and ice melts into cracks in the asphalt and then freezes, expanding in the cracks.

Meanwhile, the frost in the ground pushes up, weakening the asphalt.

This then causes the asphalt to break away in chunks and forms the pothole.

Tips to reduce damage: • Pothole-related damage to suspension and steering systems can include: an unusually harsh or bouncy ride; vehicle oscillation or swaying while turning and, in extreme cases, loss of control.

• Symptoms of wheel alignment problems are uneven tire wear; handling problems, such as “pulling” in one direction instead of maintaining a straight path or harsh vibration. Poor alignment also increases fuel consumption, shortens the lifespan of tires and hampers reliable handling.

• Potholes can also cause visible dents in the rim and bulges or blisters on tire sidewalls.

U15 traveled down the road and back again for the win JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter The Cariboo United U15 girls broke the ice with authority last weekend, while the U13 Cariboo United found their initial tournament a bit harder than expected.

The U15 United beat teams from across B.C. in the U15/U16 division of the Kelowna ice breaker tournament, taking gold in their first tournament of the year.

“The U15 girls played phenomenally well, hence the gold medal,” coach Gilbert Schotel said.

The U13 faced some problems in their first steps in a new field size; U12 teams play eight versus eight, while the U15 teams play 11 versus 11.

“All in all, these girls played really well. All the other team had experience playing 11 on 11,” Schotel, who also coached the U13 team said.

The Okanagan/Mission Heat were the first to fall to Cariboo United.

Kyra Teetzen took the lone point in the game, taking United to a 1-0 victory and

FHL teams are running on all cylinders, hitting hard and fast, digging down deep and giving 110 per cent this week as they vie for the greatest honour the league can bestow on a team, the Lumber Cup. It wasn’t a belated April’s Fools joke as Serenity upset Fraser River 5-1, as Blue Collar kills off a late two man advantage and then scores on a last minute power play of their own to make the final BCS 2 – Bear 1.

The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack men’s soccer team is poised to hold their annual spring evaluation camp. The PACWEST club will be inviting players to Hillside Stadium on Saturday, April 6.

“We look forward to seeing new players that are interested in playing for us in the fall and the talent level that is out there,” said WolfPack co-head coach John Antulov, who will be back for his seventh year along with Sean Wallace, who begins his 14 year.

Both say despite losing only one player to graduation from the squad which captured a bronze medal at the 2012 PACWEST championships, new players shouldn’t be discouraged.

“There could be more openings depending on the level of talent coming in,” Antulov explains.

“If there are some very good players that are interested then there will be challenges for spots. But, we hope that everyone who is eligible will come back.”

Antulov believes they are always looking for goal scoring.

“It’s always an area you are looking to find.”

The morning session will consist of skills evaluation and small sided games with a full scrimmage slated for the afternoon.

“As always, we get a lot of emails from all over BC and abroad,” he says. “ We will see how many actually show. For younger players, they are starting their seasons.”

The evaluations will go from 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. at Hillside Stadium.

Challenge yourself CFL Hall of Fame Quarterback Damon Allen has created a truly star-studded line up of presenters, guests and coaches for the launch of B.C.'s very first Damon Allen High School Quarterback Challenge. (HSQBC). HSQBC gives young athletes a chance to measure their skills amongst their peers by gathering all high school quarterbacks in B.C. together to strut their stuff. The event will also include drum lines, cheer leading demos, mascots, high level warm ups and a list of star mentors that is growing daily, including former and present B.C. Lions, prominent British Columbia Olympic medal winners and many more. The event takes place on May 10 at the Richmond Olympic Oval.

The HSQBC has experienced exponential growth and is excited to be relocating to the Richmond Oval to accommodate the influx of participants. The event now encompasses not only an Anti-Bullying movement headed by founder John Tokar, but also features “Stop Concussion’s” Paul Rosen – Gold Medal Paralympics Athlete and lastly a showcase by the VPD’s “Odd Squad”– an anti-drug and anti-gang organization lead by VPD Detective Brendon Steele and former Hell’s Angel Joe Calendino, all of whom add to the excitement of the Challenge as “Celebrity Referees.”

Damon has proved it is not only an integrated activity that will test the bodies and minds of high school quarterbacks, as well as affording them a chance at college and University scholarships, but will also inspire the journey of all those that attend this all encompassing sporting event.

The Mixed Indoor Soccer league wrapped up a winter-long season, which is very long here in the North Cariboo.

“It was a good season, all the teams were fairly close,” President of Quesnel Mixed Adult Soccer Mike Page said.

“There was good competition to the end of the season and everyone had a good time.”

After nearly six months of play, Team White beat Team Green, 2-0, to take the prestigious top position.

Black beat blue black and blue with a 6-4 finish, putting Team Black in third, while Team Red was left out in the cold until their fingers and noses matched their jerseys.

“We had another successful indoor season and are looking forward to another great mixed adult outdoor season this summer at QYSA fields,” Page said.

Nearly 70 players hit the fields over the winter, bettering last year’s numbers, and Page is hoping to see a similar number make their way on to the field for the always shorter summer season.

Steak is still the all-time favourite on the grill A

ccording to the recent Canadian GrillWatch Survey, hamburgers remain the mostoften food grilled in the past year, according to (89%) of respondents, with beef patties being top favourite (96%).

Hot dogs (77%) rose to second place and were most often grilled by families with children.

Chicken pieces (76%), followed by steak (74%) took home third and fourth place respectively as foods mostoften grilled in the past year.

Steak, however, continues to reign as the all-time favourite barbecue item, according to (44%) of respondents, followed by hamburgers (35%), chicken pieces (30%), and hot dogs (16%).

Kick off barbecue season by grilling this mouth-watering steak recipe from Weber’s New Real Grilling cookbook.

Beef Tenderloin Steaks with Seared Mushrooms and Red Wine Vinaigrette Serves: 4 Prep time: 15 minutes Grilling time: 14–18 minutes Special equipment:

perforated grill pan 4 beef tenderloin steaks, each about 6 ounces and 1¼ inches thick • Extra-virgin olive oil • Kosher salt • Freshly ground black pepper 3 thick slices bacon, cut into ¼-inch dice (2 ounces) • cup finely diced red onion Vinaigrette 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard 2 garlic cloves, minced or pushed through a press 8 ounces cremini mushrooms, stems removed, each cut into quarters 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh chives 1. Brush the steaks on both sides with oil and season generously with salt and pepper. Allow the steaks to stand at room temperature for 15 to 30 minutes before grilling.

2. Prepare the grill for direct cooking over high heat (450° to 550°F) and medium heat (350° to 450°F) and preheat a perforated grill pan over medium heat.

3. In a skillet over mediumlow heat, cook the bacon and onion until the bacon is crisp, 6 to 8 minutes, stirring

occasionally. Remove from the heat.

4. Combine the vinaigrette ingredients, including ¼ cup oil, ½ teaspoon salt, and ¼ teaspoon pepper; whisk until smooth. Put the mushrooms in a medium bowl and add ¼ cup of the vinaigrette.

Mix well. Reserve the remaining vinaigrette.

5. Grill the steaks over direct high heat, with the lid closed, until cooked to your desired doneness, 8 to 10 minutes for medium rare, turning once or twice. Remove from the grill and let rest for 3 to 5 minutes.

6. Spread the mushrooms in a single layer on the grill pan and grill over direct medium heat, with the lid closed, until golden brown and tender, 6 to 8 minutes, turning once or twice. Don’t move the mushrooms until the bottom sides are nicely browned.

Transfer the mushrooms to the skillet with the bacon and onions and warm over medium heat for about 1 minute, stirring often. Add the chives and mix well. Serve the steaks warm with the mushroom mixture spooned on top. If desired, whisk the reserved vinaigrette and drizzle some over each steak. www.newscanada.com

his pretty berrystudded dessert is a delicious cross between a custard and a pancake.

It makes a great entertaining option because you can pop it in the oven to bake while the main course is being served.

It gets top marks as an arthritis fighter: it’s low in saturated fat for a dessert, and includes raspberries which are a great source of fibre, are high in antioxidants and have a low glycemic index.

2 cups (500 mL) unsweetened frozen raspberries 1 1/2 cups (375 mL) liquid egg substitute 1 1/4 cups (300 mL) 2% milk 1 cup (250 mL) all-purpose flour 3/4 cup (175 mL) granulated sugar

3 tbsp (45 mL) melted nonhydrogenated margarine 1 tbsp (15 mL) vanilla extract 1/2 tsp (2 mL) salt Icing sugar (optional) Low fat vanilla yogurt (optional) Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). Scatter raspberries in a greased, 11-inch (28 cm) shallow baking dish with fluted edges. Combine eggs, milk, flour, sugar, margarine, vanilla and salt in a blender.

Blend, on medium speed, scraping the pitcher once, for 30 seconds or until smooth.

(Or, combine all ingredients in a bowl and whisk until smooth.)

Pour batter evenly over the raspberries. Bake for 40 minutes or until set. Dust with icing sugar (optional).

Slice into wedges and serve warm with a dollop of yogurt

(optional). Makes 12 servings.

Relay for Life means different things to different people

R

elay For Life and the Canadian Cancer Society means something a little different to everyone. We spoke with several cancer survivors and a cancer caregiver recently to find out what the event and the Canadian Cancer Society meant to them.

Starla Frazer, a two-time cancer survivor who is fighting once again, is a member of the Save-On Cancer Kickers team.

When asked how the Canadian Cancer Society helped her during her cancer journey, Starla said it was the financial support for travelling to medical appointments that really helped.

“We had just moved and [the Canadian Cancer Society] meant a lot in terms of financial support to travel to Kamloops.”

Since then, she has found it very helpful to have the Canadian Cancer Society around for support and information.

Like many people, the Survivor’s Lap is Starla’s favourite part of Relay For Life. Last year she used a scooter provided

by the Elks Club to participate in the lap.

“It’s a time to see all my friends and to mourn those who’ve been lost.”

Our theme this year, Time for a Cure, really hits home for Starla.

“I’m fighting again [for the third time] and would love to find a cure.”

Michelle Lessard is another recent cancer survivor who is still fighting the disease. To her, “Relay For Life is a time of coming together with other people who’ve had cancer or suffered a loss. It helps us to realize that life is special.”

The Canadian Cancer Society was there for Michelle, too, in the form of support through breast cancer survivors group, to answer her questions or for a wig to make her feel good.

Michelle is a regular participant in Relay For Life and she too enjoys the Survivor’s Lap. She also just enjoys going around the park.

“Quesnel is not a big place – [Relay] is very personal because you know so many other

people.”

Michelle is still fighting her cancer and this has meant big life changes for her, in recovery and her day-to-day life. Her experiences help to remind us that it is Time for a Cure.

Michelle Nylen’s experiences with cancer are a bit different. She is not a survivor herself, but cared for her son when he was diagnosed and spent a lot of time at the Children’s Hospital.

Although they didn’t use Canadian Cancer Society programs at that time, as they had much support from the hockey community and people of Quesnel, Michelle said, “They (the Canadian Cancer Society) always asked if we needed anything.”

When Michelle participated in Relay For Life in Quesnel as a speaker last year, she found that Relay was not what she expected.

“It was like a homecoming; there were so many with cancer experiences. It was very connecting and emotional

for [my son].”

Michelle and her family also had a little different outcome from many with cancer experiences. After her son’s experience, Michelle connected with a man whose daughter was going through the same situation; they are now happily married.

While her son’s experience showed her she needed to appreciate everything in life, Michelle has seen her son take this lesson to heart.

“He used to be very timid. Now he is taking his second chance and living life to the fullest and appreciating it.”

It is hard to understand just how much Relay For Life and the Canadian Cancer Society can impact someone’s life unless you have been through it firsthand.

However, seeing the courage and triumph on the faces of survivors and their caregivers during the Survivor’s Lap at Relay can give you a pretty good idea.
