for over asking!
e hired Scott to sell our home over another agent our family had worked with in the past, as he made us feel like we were a true priority to him. He is accountable, thoughtful, and he was an excellent guide for us throughout the process of selling. It took about 3 months, but Scott really believed in the list price he recommended, and encouraged us to remain patient. We ended up receiving multiple offers and selling for over our asking price. We’re thrilled and couldn’t be happier with the way things turned out. Scott is highly recommended.” ~A. & K. Belliveau, Vancouver

What the stars say about your week Free Will Astrology By Rob Brezsny • Week of April 4
ARIES (March 21-April 19): “Art cannot be modern,” said Austrian painter Egon Schiele. “Art is primordially eternal.” I love that idea. Not all of the artifacts called “art” fit that scrupulous definition, of course. Katy Perry’s music and the film Wreck It Ralph may have some entertainment value, but they’re not primordially eternal. I bring this up, Aries, because I think you have entered a particularly wild and timeless phase of your own development. Whether or not you are literally an artist, you have a mandate to create your life story as a primordially eternal work of art. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): “All my best ideas come from having no answer,” said pioneer filmmaker John Cassavetes, “from not knowing.” I hope that testimony cheers you up, Taurus. As hard as it may be for you to imagine, you are on the verge of a breakthrough. As you surf the chaotic flow and monitor the confusing hubbub, you are brewing the perfect conditions for an outburst of creativity. Rejoice in the blessing of not knowing! GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Sant is a Hindi word that comes from a Sanskrit verb meaning “to be good” and “to be real.” Personally, I know a lot of people who are either real or good. But few are both. The good ones tend to be overly polite, and the real ones don’t put a high priority on being nice. So here’s your assignment, Gemini: to be good and real; to have compassionate intentions even as you conduct yourself with a high degree of authenticity; to bestow blessings everywhere you go while at the same time being honest and clear and deep. According to my reading of the astrological omens, you have the power to pull off this strenuous feat. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Let’s take a look back at the first three months of 2013. How
April 4, 2013
have you been doing? If I’m reading the astrological markers accurately, you have jettisoned a portion of the psychic gunk that had accumulated in you during the past six years. You have partially redeemed the shadowy side of your nature and you have to some degree ripened the most immature part. There’s also the matter of your heart. You have managed some healing of a wound that had festered there for a long time. So here’s my question for you: Is it possible for you to do more of this good work? The target date for completion is your birthday.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Naturalist Charles Darwin formulated the theory of evolution, which has been one of history’s most influential hypotheses. A crucial event in his early development as a scientist was a five-year boat trip he took around the world when he was in his twenties. The research he conducted along the way seeded many of his unique ideas. The writing he did established his reputation as a noteworthy author. And yet before his journey, his father tried to talk him out of embarking, calling it a “wild scheme” and “a useless undertaking.” Did your parents or other authorities ever have a similar response to one of your brilliant projects? If so, now would be a good time to heal the wound caused by their opposition. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): I’ve got three sets of affirmations for you, Virgo. Say them out loud and see if they might work for you. 1. “I will be engrossed in fascinating experiences that feed my curiosity, but I will not be obsessed with grueling frustrations that drain my energy.” 2. “I will be committed to love if it opens my eyes and heart, but I will not be infatuated with maddening conundrums that jiggle my fear.” 3. “I will give myself freely to learning opportunities that offer me valuable lessons I can use to improve my life, but I will be skeptical toward rough-edged tests that ask far more from me than they offer in return.” LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): “Pole of inacces-
sibility” is a term that explorers use to identify places on the Earth that are hard — and
interesting! — to get to. On each continent, it’s usually considered to be the spot that’s farthest from the coastline. For instance, there’s a pole of inaccessibility near the frozen centre of Antarctica. Its elevation is over 12,000 feet and it has the planet’s coldest average temperatures. As for the oceanic pole of inaccessibility, it’s an area in the South Pacific that’s most remote from land. By my reckoning, Libra, you would benefit from identifying what your own personal version of this point is, whether it’s literal or metaphorical. I think it’s also a great time to transform your relationship with it.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Every April, the ancient Romans celebrated a festival known as Robigalia. Among the rites they performed were ceremonies to exorcize the god of rust and mildew. I suggest you consider reviving that old practice, Scorpio. You would benefit from spending a few days waging war against insidious rot. You could start by scrubbing away all the sludge, scum, and gunk from your home, car, and workplace. Next, make a similar effort on a metaphorical level. Scour the muck, glop, and grime out of your psyche. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): “You know that place between sleep and awake, the place where you can still remember dreaming? That’s where I’ll always love you. That’s where I’ll be waiting.” Tinkerbell says that to Peter Pan in J.M. Barrie’s famous story. Sometime soon, I think you should whisper words like those to a person or animal you love. It’s time for you to be as romantic and lyrical as possible. You need to bestow and attract the nourishment that comes from expressing extravagant tenderness. For even better results, add this sweetness from French poet Paul Valéry: “I am what is changing secretly in you.” And try this beauty from Walt Whitman: “We were together. I forget the rest.” CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Naturalist John Muir (1838-1914) had an ecstatic relationship with the California wilderness. He studied it as a scientist and he worshiped it as a mystical devotee. During the course of his communion with the glaciers and
peaks of the Sierra Nevada mountains, he came close to seeing them as living entities that evolved over long periods of time. “Glaciers move in tides,” he wrote. “So do mountains. So do all things.” With Muir as your inspiration, I invite you to identify the very gradual currents and tides that have flowed for years through your own life, Capricorn. It’s prime time to deepen your understanding and appreciation of the big, slow-moving cycles that have brought you to where you are today.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): American author William Faulkner won a Nobel Prize for literature, an indication that he had abundant talent. The prose he wrote was often experimental, cerebral, and complex. He was once asked what he would say to readers who found it difficult to grasp his meaning “even after reading it two or three times.” His reply: “Read it four times.” My counsel to you, Aquarius, is similar. When faced with a challenging event or situation that taxes your understanding, keep working to understand it even past the point where you would normally quit. There will be rewards, I promise. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): “Dear Rob: I just consulted an astrologer, and he told me that my planets are very weak because they’re in the wrong houses and have bad aspects. Please tell me what this means. Am I cursed? Is there any way to remedy my afflictions? — Paranoid Pisces.” Dear Pisces: Whoever told you that nonsense is an incompetent astrologer. You shouldn’t heed him. There’s no such thing as one’s planets being weak or being in the wrong houses or having bad aspects. There may be challenges, but those are also opportunities. Luckily, the coming weeks will be prime time for you Pisceans to overthrow the influence of inept “experts” and irresponsible authorities like him. Reclaim your power to define your own fate from anyone who has stolen it from you. Homework: Imagine a bedtime story you’d like to hear and the person you’d like to hear it from. Bad mother This is for the woman who was turning from Cardero to Barclay on her bike with a child in the front in the child seat on the handlebars. Neither she nor her child had a helmet on. What type of an idiot adult has a child on a bike with no helmet on? What happens if he falls out of that thing? Any little thing can happen. If you don’t have a helmet, you don’t go on the bike. You don’t get everything you want; you really have to be responsible, especially when the life of someone so small is in your hands. Seriously, people, what the hell. Anonymous
strolabe Musik Theatre presents The Sex Lives of Vegetables… And Other Delicious Distractions on Saturday, April 20 at VanDusen Botanical Garden: a nutritious (and sometimes naughty) jaunt down the garden path, investigating bees, weeds, and the surprising sex lives of vegetables. This multidisciplinary evening pairs Governor General Award-winning poet Lorna Crozier with musicians AK Coope (clarinet), Rachel Kiyo Iwaasa (piano), and Heather Pawsey (soprano) in a chamber music celebration of the garden’s glories. Featuring composer Leslie Uyeda’s settings of Crozier’s notorious vegetable poems, and the world premiere of Canadian composer Leila Lustig’s “Eve to Adam”, this extraordinary concert is the first public performance in VanDusen’s Visitor Centre. “Gardens sustain us nutritionally, emotionally and artistically,” says Pawsey, artistic director of Astrolabe Musik Theatre. “During a time of environmental uncertainty, when hunger is the norm for many across the globe, we are eager to honour the multifaceted gifts of the garden. Where better to do this than in one of Vancouver’s most celebrated gardens.” Mirroring the distinct personality of each of Crozier’s poems, Uyeda uses a wide variety of compositional styles, from jovial and playful to sinister and uncomfortable. Onions, lettuce and potatoes receive a spiky, non-narrative treatment to match their dark themes, while the sexy stories of watermelon and yams are paired with jazzy, extroverted harmonies. Turn those polar bears into pandas
AK Coope (clarinet), Rachel Kiyo Iwaasa (piano), and Heather Pawsey (soprano) of Astrolabe Musik Theatre will perform composer Leslie Uyeda’s setting of Lorna Crozier’s notorious vegetable poems, with Crozier, at the VanDusen on April 20. Tim Pawsey photo frame the 15-song work (performed here for the first time in its entirety) in a pungent bouquet of metaphor and melody. Other ‘delicious distractions’ include works that encourage an appreciation for the physical, emotional, and spiritual treasures we receive from gardening. Canadian composer Jean Coulthard’s “Gardens” celebrates nature’s beauty, while Paul Reade’s “The Victorian Kitchen Garden” explores nutrition. Johanna Beyer’s “Bees” pays tribute to these critical, busy workers, and Terence Greaves’ A Garden of Weeds acknowledges the unappreciated species in a flowerbed. A site-specific concert, The Sex Lives of Vegetables ... And Other Delicious Distractions makes creative use of the Visitor Centre’s voluptuous lines, with lighting by Mark Eugster, and edible vegetable bouquets by Hornby Island visual artist and organic farmer Elaine Savoie.
Audience members are invited to explore the VanDusen Botanical Garden, including the feted heirloom vegetable patch, prior to the concert (free garden admission with concert ticket, 6:30 to 7:30pm, concert night only).

Ah yes, panda bears, just what we need. We have this big concern about oil pollution and polar bears having no ice and starving to death. Now if you take your polar bear and dip them into the Athabasca tar sands, just enough to get black on his paws and a little cutesy black around his eyes. What have you got? Your panda bear. There you are. Then Mr. Harper will be happy because then he’ll have his panda bears and we won’t have any problems with oil pollution and polar bears. I think it’s a wonderfully Canadian solution. Battle with the bottle Does anyone ever notice public signs that are clearly posted along with diagrams on public recycling and waste bins or are some people in the West End and downtown just stupid, lazy and selfish bastards who don’t give a damn one way or another? Those receptacles around public waste bins are for bottles and cans so binners can collect them without having to dig through trash. They are not for lazy stupid people to put their coffee and bubble tea cups out the outside of the bins or on top of newspaper boxes and bus stop benches and shelves in retail stores. Leslie Benisz

Twentysomething’s generational angst They were raised to believe they could have anything they wanted. They want a house. How can they afford it? Sean Minogue’s new play explores their struggles and their demons By Martha Perkins
s a bulldozer digs a hole for another condo tower off Main Street, a group of actors is in a nearby studio rehearsing a play about a generation of young people who mourn the idea of ever being able to own their own home. “Our generation was raised with the belief we could do anything,” says Adam Lolacher who plays Charlie in Sean Minogue’s new play, Us and Everything We Own. That belief has hit the brick wall of reality in today’s economy. Sure you can follow your dream to be an actor, but get paid enough to afford a home? Society (and the federal government) wants more welders instead. As 31-year-old Minogue says, “It feels like the ladder has been kicked away after the last people who made it up.” Lolacher plays Charlie, who’s broke and struggling but still a dreamer. He thinks he’s found a way to financial prosperity — opening a coffee shop with his barista co-worker Erin and his girlfriend Rachel’s brother, Simon. Only problem is that the startup money comes from Rachel and Simon’s parents, who have been known to be emotionally manipulative — Rachel and Simon can have the money but they’re going to have to pay for it by accepting well-intentioned (surely!) but snide comments. Rachel (Julie McIsaac) is adamantly opposed to accepting. She has sacrificed many pleasures in order to go through life paying for things herself. She doesn’t want Charlie and Simon to accept her

parents’ money. Besides, she wants to put all of their financial eggs into the buying-a-home basket. Simon, who’s never succeeded at anything, is awkward and suffers from anxiety. He sees the coffee shop as a way to make his own mark in the word. “Simon has no idea what he’s doing,” says Jason Cliff, the actor who will bring him to life at PAL Theatre April 5 to 13. “He’s in way over his head but this is a step he needs to take. He has to put himself out there to feel success.” Erin (Genevieve Fleming), on the other hand, had lots of successes when she was younger but now is a failure when it comes to her expectations of what adulthood should be bringing her. She too really needs the coffee shop to go ahead. The lease for the coffee shop is ready to sign and all they need is the $20,000 from Simon and Julie’s parents. Why on earth turn it down? Who cares if it means continuing to rely on the older generation? Fleming says it’s a joy and a luxury to be part of a play — the Vancouver run is its premiere — that speaks for and to her twentysomething generation. “It’s not only a Canadian story and a young person’s story but it’s also a Vancouver story,” says McIsaac. She too is revelling in being able to play a lead role, not someone in the periphery — the “daughter of.” “This play is about the concerns of our generation and the things that affect our world.” Minogue enjoyed much success with his previous play, Prodigals. He lived in Vancouver — this is the place where his car broke down in a cross-Canada trek —
In Us and Everything We Own, Adam Lolacher plays Charlie, who wants to accept $20,000 from the parents of his girlfriend Rachel, played by Julie McIsaac. She’s adamantly opposed to accepting money — and the emotional strings that come with it. Instead, she wants to buy a home, a true sign of adulthood. David Cooper photo but he’s now based in Toronto. Why? Because his girlfriend got a well-paying job there, a job that allows him to dedicate his time to writing. “I get frustrated by the narrow focus of the debate” about the challenges facing his generation, especially when it comes to attaining many of the things society (and their own upbringing) says they should attain. Young people are often portrayed as “parasitic organisms” who are underperforming in a world that needs more welders than arts grads. McIsaac says Minogue’s play also explores the issues of what has value in our lives. “What is success? What do I feel is meaningful
in my life?” People think that owning a house is a sign you’ve become a grown-up. That may still ring true, but what do you feel about yourself when you think you’ll never be able to afford it in today’s market, let alone in the future? Minogue, like others, finds himself starting to “dismiss these agreed-upon cultural goals.” He feels less of a need to own; renting is fine. He feels less of a need to make a lot of money; he’d rather earn less doing what he wants to do. Cliff says that “we’re a generation that’s happy with sustainability,” that is, earning enough to get by. “But we’re getting stretched
thin and we’re not doing the things that bring us joy.” You can join the conversation — and support a generation of young actors trying to make a living — by attending Us and Everything We Own. Young adults, bring your parents. Parents, bring your children. Let’s see what you talk about afterwards. Tickets are $12 (for the April 4 preview) to $22, available through Brown Paper Tickets. The play runs Tuesday to Sunday (April 5 to April 13) at 581 Cardero in Coal Harbour. On April 9 there’s a two-for-one special with a post-show talk. Show time is 8pm except for the April 13 two-for-one matinee at 2pm. TwentysomethingTheatre.com
