Town councillors and members of the fire department have seem them — soon it will be the public’s turn. The architectural firm hired by the Town of Qualicum Beach to design the new facility recently presented three possible layouts — building footprints essentially — to council, which then provided some input and asked members of the fire department to have a look and do the same, according to Coun. Dave Willie. Dates for public meetings have not been set, said town spokesperson Patricia Huntsman. While money for the new fire hall has been set aside in the town’s budget, “council wants to look at new grant opportunities that may become available,” said Huntsman. That talk is getting tiresome, said Willie. “I don’t know where that crap comes from and it’s really starting to annoy me,” said Willie. “We are going ahead with the fire hall. It’s not contingent on grants. This is in the budget. It’s the same person (Mayor Teunis Westbroek) who keeps singing the same song (about grants).” The need for a new, safe fire hall was a frontand-centre issue for Willie during the 2011 election campaign. He said this week he’s pleased with how things have progressed. “It can’t go any quicker than this,” said Willie. “Nothing’s ever quick when it comes to government. They do everything stunt planes can do and more — members of the PDQ Flyers are inviting interested people to see how much fun it can be to fly model aircraft. The current average age of the 60 Parksville District and Qualicum Flyers Association members is about 65, explained PR director Bruce Berry, who said the club is always looking for younger people. The Flyers are presenting some of their latest creations at the Nanaimo North Mall (formerly Rutherford) this Saturday to reach out to potential members. They won’t be flying planes in the mall but they will showcase their building skills.

Berry got into the hobby about 10 years ago when he went to a fly-in event at Springwood Park in Parksville and he’s been hooked ever since. “The technology has really advanced, especially with electric engines, even just in the last ten years,” he said, pointing out that while at least two-thirds of their models are liquid fuel powered, the electric ones are a lot quieter and simpler to start flying. He suggests the cost is probably the biggest hinderance for younger people, with fancier models getting into the thousands of dollars, but there is a wide range and people can start from scratch, with kits or buy ARFs (almost ready to fly) packages that are simple to assemble. City looks to residents for budget input The City of Parksville invites residents to a public budget deliberation meeting next week. The special Committee of the Whole meeting on Thursday, April 18 at 5 p.m. at the civic centre is a chance to discuss the draft 2013 municipal budget currently before council. Council is requesting input as an important part of the financial planning process. There are many ways for people to contribute, people can attend in person, watch and comment online at www. parksville.ca, e-mail communications@parksville.ca, comment at facebook.com/cityparksville or tweet @cityparksville. There will be a link to an open ended comment form on the city’s website through April. All submitted comments will become part of the public record. The results will be forwarded to the next budget meeting on May 1. The draft 2013-2017 Provisional Financial Plan and other documents are on the website at www.parksville.ca. The numbers are preliminary, but director of finance Lucky Butterworth doesn’t expect much change from 2012 in which residents paid $7.55 million in property taxes and businesses and light industry paid $2.42 million. — Auren Ruvinsky

School district recruiting for superintendent The local board of education has turned to a recruitment initiative to help in the search for a new superintendent. It’s called Make a Future and was created by the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association as a joint venture among B.C.’s 60 public school boards and the Ministry of Education. In the interim, Assistant Superintendent Rollie Koop has become the acting superintendent of schools in District 69 and Director of Instruction Gillian Wilson is the acting assistant superintendent. — NEWS Staff

Secret meetings continue JOHN HARDING

The Town of Qualicum Beach remains silent on what is happening behind closed doors. Council met in camera once again Wednesday morning. There’s no word on what is being discussed in these meetings, which have been occurring at a two-or-three-times-a-week clip for the past few months. In accordance with the Community Charter, the town must post a notice of these meetings. The notice for the meeting Wednesday was posted last week, and was identical to the postings for other recent, in-camera meetings. The agenda for the meeting Wednesday had only three points: adoption of the agenda, a motion to close the meeting to the public and adjournment. According to the town, the motion to close the meeting to the public was “for the purposes of considering: labour relations or other em-

ployee relations; personal information about an identifiable individual who holds or is being considered for a position as an officer, employee or agent of the municipality or another person appointed by the municipality.” The NEWS asked the town for comment Wednesday afternoon about what happened at that morning’s in-camera session. Town spokesperson Patricia Hunstman sent The NEWS this in an e-mail: “Pursuant to s. 117 of the Charter, council has a duty to respect confidentiality, and must keep in confidence items discussed at a closed meeting until the information is discussed at a meeting open to the public or council authorizes release of the information to the public. The corporate administrator routinely announces at regular council meetings, any items that council has authorized for release. The town is specifically prohibited by law from disclosing personal information.”

Nanoose Bay’s giant Arbutus Meadows Equestrian Centre is proving useful for a wide variety of activities, including an upcoming RV show that couldn’t fit anywhere else on the Island. “There has never been an indoor RV show on the Island that I’m aware of, the problem has been the venue” Joan Jackson, Recreation Vehicle Dealers Association of B.C. (RVDA) executive director said of their RV Show and Sale next weekend. While people think ice arenas are huge, she pointed out, the doors aren’t usually big enough to get RVs through and they’re not nearly as big as the 5,574 square-metre (60,000 square feet) multipurpose facility in Nanoose Bay. Jackson said they even looked at the Victoria Conference Centre, but the floor couldn’t support the RVs. She said equestrian centre owner Rob Bau

“has done a lot of amazing work there with a concrete floor, retractable bleachers and a new road around it.” Already used for horse events and indoor soccer, the facility could host as many as 80 RVs from the five mid-Island dealers involved in the show, along with well over a dozen other exhibition booths with various RV and camping-related information and products. While she didn’t know how many RVs each dealer would bring, she promised a complete array of RV sizes and styles would be represented. With free parking, financing on site by RBC, at least one food vendor (Extreme Eatz Food Trucks), door prizes and face painting, there will be a festive atmosphere to what Jackson said she hopes will be the first of an annual event. The exhibition runs 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, April 5 and Saturday, April 6 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 7 at the Arbutus Meadows Equestrian Centre in Nanoose Bay. THURSDAY SPOTLIGHT: People, places and issues of the Parksville/Qualicum Beach region long-time qualicum beach resident celebrates 100th birthday

When half an acre cost you $85 Helen Eggersman was still a teenager in 1930 when she opened the Qualicum Barber and Beauty Shop, the first business of its kind in the village. Helen was born in Saskatchewan in 1913, was married in 1936 and recently celebrated her 100th birthday. NEIL HORNER news@pqbnews.com

So what’s it like to live for a whole century? Helen Eggersman knows all about it — and her tale is in many ways a part of the story of Qualicum Beach. Born in McDowell, Saskatchewan in 1913, Helen and her parents — Jack and Millicent Adronis moved to Coombs after the end of the First World War. Work wasn’t easy to come by for returning veterans and when Jack saw ads advertising job opportunities in New Zealand, the family jumped at the chance to get ahead — even if it meant moving to the far end of the Earth. It seemed too good to be true — and it was. Things did not work out as expected. The only work they could find was in a millinery factory, where Helen’s mother worked making hats. Helen was only 16 in 1929 when she crossed to the mainland to attend the Malar School of Barber and Hairdressing. After a year of training, she was ready to start her career and moved back to Qualicum Beach to open the Qualicum Barber and Beauty Shop — the first in the village. Her shop was situated in the green building which used to house Olivander’s Restaurant. Helen lived upstairs in a rooming house, as her father by this time had

been transferred to Nanoose Bay. Things were different back then, with the cost of a haircut for men set at 30 cents and a lady’s shampoo and set at 50 cents. The roads in Qualicum Beach were dirt then and there weren’t a lot of businesses — a Red and White store, a liquor store, the beauty shop and the Village Garage. Helen later moved her business across the street, where the CIBC now stands. The new digs allowed Helen to make her home in the back of her new shop. Parker Brothers started using the office for their fuel business and Helen took phone orders for them. It was in 1935 that Helen met a young Dutchman, Phil Eggersman at a young people’s group at the United Church on First Ave. On Boxing Day 1936, Helen and Phil were married and, on Nov. 15 the following year, they had a daughter, Sylvia, who grew up and lived in Qualicum Beach, eventually marrying Monty Montgomery. After getting out of hospital following a serious logging accident, Phil went to barber school and joined Helen in her business, where he worked for many years. In 1943, Helen and Phil bought a half acre of land for $85 in a tax sale on the site of the present day Qualicum Barber and Beauty Shop, located across from the Community Hall. Thick woods covered the property at that time, but within a year the couple had cleared it and started to build their new home. Sam Little, the father of Elizabeth Little, who owned and operated St. Andrew’s Lodge drew the plans for a new shop, with living quarters in the back. There was another war on in Europe by this time though and permits were difficult to obtain, as barber and beauty shops were not considered

essential to the war effort. Permits weren’t the only things in short supply. Timber and nails were also hard to come by, so the couple bought a boathouse located on the beach behind what is now Deez Restaurant and used that as raw materials for their new home, straightening any bent nails and salvaging the lumber. They moved in June of 1944 and on Dec. 17, their second daughter, Deane Hendry was born. The Eggersmans worked together until 1964, catering to many celebrities ranging from the King of Siam to Bob Hope. Cabin Inn, now the site of the Sand Pebbles Inn. She remembers horseback riding with the Barclay girls. Helen sang in the United Church choir and at many local weddings and was an active member of the church guild and a member of the Rotarians. Helen — known to many as Granny Egg — turned 100 on March 4 and her birthday party was in some ways like a family reunion for Qualicum Beach pioneers. Mayor Teunis Westbroek spoke and presented Helen with a special cup and saucer. Pheasant Glen seeks subdivision

Pheasant Glen Golf Resort is asking the Town of Qualicum Beach to approve the first step in its plans to provide a mixture of housing and resort amenities. This application, which is expected to appear before council by the end of this month, asks for the town to approve the subdivision of lands at Pheasant Glen, basically setting aside for development land that’s not part of the Agricultural Land Reserve from land that is part of the ALR (the golf course). “In order for us to proceed (with a mixed residential resort development), this is the first step for that to happen,” Pheasant Glen managing partner Craig Dutton said in an interview Wednesday. In a news release issued this week, Dutton said Pheasant Glen plans a mixed residential resort complex including a swimming pool, a fitness center, links to the town’s existing trail system, a new clubhouse, resort cabins, residential cottages and other

amenities. “We are pleased to be able to tell our members and the public that we are back in front of the town of Qualicum Beach planning department with an application to rezone the property to permit the subdivision of the resort land from the golf course and kick start the project,” said Dutton. “We first submitted the application November 7, 2012 and we expected the amended application to be in front of council at the next council meeting possibly as early as (Monday).” Dutton told The NEWS Wednesday he doesn’t believe the application will be included Monday’s agenda, but perhaps it will be in front of council by its next meeting, April 22. “We have been in discussions with the planning department since prior to November 7, 2012 and after working for weeks with our legal and planning advisors we decided to submit the amended application,” Dutton said in the release. “When the subdivision of the land is approved we will immediately submit our application for the changes we will need to begin build-

ing.” Pheasant Glen began working on the project in 2005. The golf rebuild was completed in 2006 at a cost of $6 million dollars. Pheasant Glen’s estimates put the total economic value of the project when completed at as much as $27 million and Dutton said up to 80 per cent of that will be spent locally. In its news release, Pheasant Glen also said a survey conducted in February of 2011 by Vancouver-based Stratcom found that 68 per cent of Qualicum Beach residents supported a mixed residential resort development at Pheasant Glen. Pheasant Glen said Stratcom’s survey was demographically and statistically representative of the Qualicum Beach population and statistically accurate to within five per cent, 19 out of 20 times.

What is certain is Willie’s resolve to move this project forward. “It’s not my position to wait to build the fire hall, waiting for grants,” he said. “That’s not what we’ve been talking about and that’s not what council has voted for. The realization of a dream for the area's early learning and literacy coalition comes in the form of its third giant child-sized interactive play centre opening Monday, April 9 in Parksville. "For us, Munchkinland at Family Place is the completion of a dream we had 13 years ago," said Deborah Davenport, Community Literacy Co-ordinator and president of Building Learning Together (BLT). "We all hoped one day we would have a centralized location but we knew that was a big dream. But see where dreams have taken us." Grand opening tours for a "look and see" will take place Monday, April 8 from 4-8 p.m. and opening day will be Tuesday, April 9 from 9 a.m. to noon. This is BLT's third Munchkinland in District 69. BLT is a coalition of community partners made up of over 180 businesses, service clubs and schools, over 20 ministries and agencies, and over 200 individuals. The partnerships at the new Munchkinland

(called Munchkinland Exploration Centre at Family Place) includes Science World, Vancouver Island University and the local senior high schools, among BLT's regular partners. Features at the new centre include a Gizmos and Gadgets room with a large wooden airplane and a First Nations portal to multicultural storytelling including a stage, an archeological dig site and a fire pit. There's a food room that will change from time to time, housing a mini restaurant, bakery, diner or cafe and kids can also enjoy a town centre where they may find a babershop, a post office, a construction assembly plant and other town shops. A baby zone will allow the young ones to join in the play and there will be a science and craft area and lending library kits to take home. There is also an intergenerational community kitchen and a full garden that will grow flowers and edibles. Munchkinland Exploration Centre is open Monday though Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon. Coombs Discovery Centre to stay open Staff from BLT’s Munchkinland Discovery Centre in Coombs will be returning to staff the new Family Place Munchkinland in Parksville, but that doesn’t mean the Coombs location will be closing. “That’s just by committing to working differently, to understanding what’s valuable and shifting the resources and personnel to make it work,” said BLT president Deborah Davenport. Three organizations are committed to working together to keep the centre open: BLT, PacificCARE Child Care Resource and Referral (CCRR) and the Arrowsmith Recreation Team (ART). CCRR will facilitate two public drop-in days

a week at the centre located at the French Creek Community School (Tuesdays and Thursdays) and ART will take the reins Wednesdays mornings until the end of the school year, all from 9-11 a.m. ART is endeavouring to fundraise to hire an early childhood educator to facilitate public dropins two days a week during the next school year. They have already held one event where they raised $700 which means they have about $2,000 to go. he money is in the budget and there is no additional tax on residents for the construction of the new fire hall in Qualicum Beach. There has been a reasonable amount of debate at the council table, and the people elected in November of 2011 have made a decision that is now law of the land. At least one of those elected officials campaigned on the construction of a new fire hall, so it’s not like this should come as a surprise. Public input has been promised, and it’s getting past time for that to happen. While we would hope council and town staff would listen to the suggestions of residents on the building’s form and character, at some point it has to be realized councillors are elected to make tough decisions and then face the music in the next election if they decide to run again. The repeated talk of the search for grant money for this project is clearly a political ploy and a stalling tactic. Yes, there could be grant money available. And while it’s getting tiresome to watch municipalities go cap-in-hand like Tiny Tim to senior levels of government instead of operating their own house finances, it is the reality of life regarding capital projects these days. Those employing a wait-for-grants approach to the fire hall are being disingenuous at best, deceptive at worst. Funding agencies will provide grants for capital projects, and the criteria on what they will fund changes year by year. There are two reasons why the talk of grants for the fire hall is irrelevant and makes us wonder about the real motives of the people behind that talk: • as we have mentioned, the money is in the budget and the expenditure has been approved, without a tax increase. • grant money that can still flow to the town can be used for other projects like the plans for Memorial Avenue upgrades. The funding agencies generally don’t care which capital project is tagged for their money. And savings through grant money are still savings to the town whether they are used on the fire hall, Memorial Avenue or any other capital project. It’s time for all involved to move past the grantmoney excuse for the snail’s pace regarding the construction of this much-needed facility. It’s now time to get some plans to the public and set a date for the dig to start. — Editorial by John Harding

I read with interest the letters printed in Tuesday’s paper regarding free-roaming cats. It’s highly likely that many of the cats that are free roaming are abandoned or feral. Since these cats have little or no human care, they continue to breed and multiply contributing to the free-roaming overpopulation. The best way to address this over population problem is to spay and neuter cats. A cat that is sterilized can’t reproduce, and over time, this free roaming cat population will decrease. We at Qualicum Cat Rescue have an ongoing spay/neuter project offering free spay/neuter certificates to the general public in our area. However, we can only offer a limited number of certificates each year due to funding constraints. Our goal is to see fewer unwanted and uncared-for cats being born, thus significantly reducing the free-roaming cat population. If the people who believe that cats are the reason that birds and other wild life are being “slaughtered,” perhaps they should consider making a donation to the Qualicum Cat Rescue to help us continue our spay/ neuter project. no need to pollute Why is Oceanside so negative about the new urgent-care facility? I really believe this is one of those situations in which people’s negativity breeds negativity. Yes, we could use an entire, full-service hospital. I’m sure every small city could. But if there is clearly no budget for this, I’m extremely happy, as the mother of small children, to be getting a brand-new, urgentcare facility. As a family, we could have used available urgent care three times in the past year. Parksville’s current after-hours clinic is open less than 30 hours a week. It has never been open, not one time, when my family has needed it, so Nanaimo General Hospital was the only option. The new facility will be open for urgent care 15 hours a day. This is a 300 per cent improvement in after-hours service and I think that’s fantastic. I know we have an aging population that needs more services, but I am grateful for any and all improvements to health services, because I recognize that most places in the rest of the world have nowhere near our level of healthcare. It’s a little embarrassing, but that’s OK. I’m willing to take one for the cause of democracy. Obviously, thinking about one person likely won’t prove as effective as an entire crowd but you never know, it might help a bit.

Busy season on the water

he Schooner Cove Yacht Club has a busy schedule of competition on the water this year. The spring racing series has already kicked off and continues on Sunday with races three and four. But wait, there’s more. The Bay Race takes place on April 21, followed by the Spring Single Handed Race on April 28. On top of the regularly scheduled racing, Wednesday evening summer fun racing commences on April 24 and continues until mid-September. The action continues on May 5 with the Jack and Jill Race and Sailpast. One of the highlights of the sailing season in Nanoose Bay is the anBy nual Race Around the Neil Horner Rocks, including the Lasqueti Island Race, which takes to the high seas May 31 and June 1-2. On June 16 skippers will take part in the Nearly Summer Single Handed Race. The Third Annual Schooner Cove Yacht Club Fleet Regatta takes place on Sept. 8 and the Fall Single Handed Race kicks off on Sept. 15. There’s likely to be much more action on the water this summer, so watch this space for all the details.

ANNUAL WOOD CHIPPING PROGRAM NOTICE TO PARKSVILLE RESIDENTS

Living south of Island Highway 19A between Church Road and Moilliet Street (both sides) The chipper will be in your area April 9 through April 12 to pick up tree and hedge trimmings. Please place only the following at the front property line before 8 am prior to April 9: 1. Branches with a maximum diameter of 6 inches (15 cm), stacked with the larger end of the branch or trunk facing the roadway. 2. Woody shrub material, piled for ease of access by the chipping crew. Rocks, stumps and construction waste may cause injury to the chipper operators and must NOT be included in piles. Please note that due to safety issues, materials such as pampas grass and clematis and wisteria vines cannot be chipped. These, along with along with other compostable garden debris, leaves, and grass clippings may be taken to the Church Road Transfer Station. Piles containing these items will not be removed by the chipping crew. Piles must be limited to a size of 5 feet wide by 3 feet high, and only one pile per residence will be removed by the chipping crew. Please do not combine piles from multiple households as it is more difficult and time consuming for the chipping crew to take apart large piles for chipping than it is for them to handle smaller piles. . When placing your chipping pile, please be sure not obstruct your property’s City water connection box in the event access is required for maintenance.

Those certainly were the days my friend

ome people are born shrewd and some have shrewdness thrust upon them. My father was a disciplinarian but my brother was a free spirit. Dad’s rules were indissoluble commandments to me but little more than a strategic challenge to Jay. When I was nine, my favourite show was Horror Theatre on Friday nights. There was always a double feature. The first film was a classic sci-fi favourite like Frankenstein or The Invisible Man. The second feature was a bloodcurdling B movie like The Screaming Skull or The Brain Eaters. Jay and I desperately wanted to watch both but dad was adamant that we go to bed after the first film. We soon fell into a pattern, dad would turn on the set at 11:30 p.m. and by 11:45 p.m. he’d be snoring loud enough to

wake the dead, so to speak. When the first movie ended, he invariably woke up and sent us to bed. After a few weeks, Jay cleverly deduced that the blaring music over the final credits was waking dad up. The next Friday, as we By Ray Smit neared the end of The Time Machine, Jay crept up to the TV and slowly turned down the sound. He waited until the second feature began and then gradually turned it up again. About halfway through The Creature Walks Among Us, dad woke up. “Movie not over yet?” Since dad didn’t specify which movie, Jay felt no guilt about saying, “No, sir.” “Make sure you go to bed when it’s over,” he muttered and then fell asleep again.

It took months before dad uncovered Jay’s little ruse, but not before I’d become terrified of zombies, ghouls and especially 50-foot women. To this day, I’m sure it’s the primary reason I never got married. About a year later, dad bought our first colour TV and Jay inherited the ancient black and white set. He soon stopped joining us for Horror Theatre. In fact, on Friday nights Jay’s room was unusually dark. Dad smelled a rat. One night he flung open Jay’ door and there was a big white dot on the middle of the TV. That’s because older sets emitted rays that remained on the screen for several seconds after they were turned off. Dad had caught Jay red-handed.

When it came time for Jay’s 15th birthday, he made a strange request. He asked for a 3x4 black accent rug for his room. It wasn’t until years later that I knew why: Every Friday night when dad checked Jay’s room, it was pitch black. Naturally, dad was immensely pleased that he’d won their war of wills. But one night, when Jay was 18, he invited me into his room for a demonstration. He turned off the old TV and pointed to the familiar incriminating white dot. Then, suddenly, he flung the black rug over the top of the set and all was dark. For three years he’d never missed a double feature. And dad was none the wiser. Healthy Aging Initiative office busy in March Last week marked the end of Embrace Aging Month. The Oceanside Healthy Aging Initiative (OHAI) celebrated the month with a number of special activities. OHAI’s enhanced relationship with VIU and the Healthy Aging and Community-Engaged Scholarship project, headed by Dr. Lynne McFadgen, has made possible a number of events. Working together, and with the sponsorship of the Greater Victoria Eldercare Foundation, a Community Connectivity Forum was held

on March 13. The forum invited a number of organizations working in fields related to seniors’ health to explore opportunities for cooperation and collaboration. Those organizations endorsed the idea of a single hub through which the public will be able to navigate the community-based health organizations. With OHAI acting as the hub, it is expected news on the progress of this collaboration will be available by the end of June. This hub, acting as a single entry to the activities of the partner organizations, will exclude direct

medical services being designed into the Oceanside Health Centre (OHC). Ultimately it is expected that there will be connectivity to the OHAI hub and the OHC. Embrace Aging month also saw three working research luncheons organized by the VIU Healthy Aging and Community-Engaged Scholarship, a Saturday Speakers’ Series on Seniors’ Health at Elder College, as well as a Health and Aging course offered at the Elder College spring semester. OHAI also participated in a

well-attended Integrated Health Forum “Living for the Health of It” organized by the Oceanside Seniors Integrated Care Advocacy on March 15. OHAI is a collaboration between a number of organizations such as VIU, UVic, Elder College, the municipalities of Oceanside, VIHA, Lifeline, SOS, Stanford Place and the Federation of Oceanside Residents’ Associations (FORA). It joined in the celebration of Embrace Aging Month with the Greater Victoria Eldercare Foundation.

The Parksville Qualicum Beach region continues to buck Island trends related to real estate statistics. Compared to March of 2012, Parksville Qualicum Beach recorded a 19 per cent increase in unit sales in March, 2013. The average sale price of homes in Parksville Qualicum Beach, again compairing March, 2012 to March, 2013, edged up two percent to $359,448. Multiple Listing Service sales summary data for March released by the Vancouver Island Real Estate Board (VIREB) shows housing sales activity across Vancouver Island was down six percent compared to last year, while average sale prices remained virtually unchanged. The average price of a single family home sold within the VIREB region in March was $319,912 which is nearly identical to the March 2012 average price of $319,661. The number of housing units reported sold last month were down compared to a year ago. In March 2012 there were 298 single family homes sold, in comparison 281 unit sales were recorded in March 2013. “We’ve experienced increased levels of month over month activity through the first quarter of 2013 which should translate into increased unit sales as we move into the spring,” said VIREB President Gary Gray. “We are returning to more normal levels of activity, and there seems to be some pent up demand in the marketplace,” said VIREB President-Elect Blair Herbert. As of the end of March, there were 2,532 single family homes available on the Multiple Listing Service within VIREB’s coverage area, down approximately four per cent from the 2,702 homes in the system at the end of March, 2012. Comparing March 2013 to March 2012, the average sale prices across VIREB’s five other zones saw: Campbell River increase eight per cent to $289,471, the Comox Valley was down three per cent to $321,633, Nanaimo’s average sales price was up one per cent to $352,466 from the March 2012 average price of $349,806, Port Alberni/West Coast was unchanged at $207,012 while the Cowichan Valley was down two per cent to $324,537. In terms of unit sales year to year there continued to be a wide disparity between the different zones last month. The Port Alberni / West Coast region recorded a 20 per cent increase in unit sales while Campbell River unit sales were off 29 per cent compared to March 2012. Nanaimo sales were down 14 per cent, Cowichan Valley sales declined seven per cent, while Comox Valley’s sales activity was down six per cent from a year ago. — NEWS Staff/VIREB
