Anaconda named for a Montana smelter town

Fourth in a series on West Kootenay-Boundary place names.

There are snakes in the Boundary, but that’s not how the Greenwood suburb of Anaconda got its name.

Former Greenwood mayor Neil Zahnd wrote in the 1988 Boundary Historical Society report: “No record remains to tell us how they chose the name, but oral tradition is that it was named after the giant Anaconda mine in Montana.” (Anaconda, Montana was home to a large copper smelter and today has a population of about 9,300.)

It appears the name was first applied to a local mine before being given to the town, judging from the earliest reference in the Midway Advance in December 1895: “The development work on the Anaconda is proving the property to be valuable ...”

The same newspaper reported in April 1896: “Greenwood City and Anaconda are booming. New buildings are being built daily. Newcomers are arriving every week, and several families are camping near the town in tents ...”

In October of the latter year, Ewing Keithley, Frederic Keffer and Lewis Hind incorporated the Anaconda Townsite Co. Charles de Blais Green surveyed the townsite along Boundary Creek at the mouths of Lind and Copper. The streets were named for English authors — Shakespeare, Shelly, Byron, and Milton — while the avenues were named after American smelting centres: Everett, Butte, Denver, Omaha, and Tacoma. The latter names survive

Anaconda had four hotels, two general stores, a bakery, shoemaker, assay office, sawmill, lawyer, and newspaper, the Anaconda News. Founded in late 1900, and published by Fred Keffer’s young son Robert, it was more of a mimeographed newsletter at first and its pages only measured 5.5 by 8.5 inches. It folded in 1908.

(Apparently it was Anaconda’s second paper — the Boundary Historical Society’s 1988 report

quoted from the first edition of the Anaconda Standard, dated July 1, 1897, although it’s not clear where the original is nor how long it lasted.)

Greenwood quickly outgrew Anaconda, but while there were many overtures to amalgamate the two, it never happened.

Anaconda, however, became home to the BC Copper Company smelter, which operated from 1901 to 1918. Portions of the townsite are now covered by the smelter’s slagpile. Leon Lotz-

kar bought the site for scrap and later donated the remains to the City of Greenwood as a park.

Although primarily a residential neighbourhood today, Anaconda is the site of an old West Kootenay Power substation that

produces solar power.

Anaconda’s post office opened on November 1, 1896 and closed on July 30, 1915. The name is perpetuated by the Anaconda Cafe.

For the seventh consecutive year a celebration of diversity has been enjoyed at Selkirk College in Castlegar… this year on an excitingly massive scale. With all kinds of action jammed into just a couple of hours, students whom have chosen a career path involving childhood care and education got a chance to learn by doing.

The event was titled “Celebrate Diverse Ability: Reframing Disability.”

students from Selkirk College hosted a free regional event on Wednesday, March 20 from noon to 2 p.m. in Castlegar at the college with help from ECCE (Early Childhood Care and Education) and TT (Transitional Training) students as well as Selkirk College’s Student Access & Support Team.

The learning is profound and adds to graduates’ toolkit as they enter the workforce. They are more confident and aware that they can pull off something big, in collaboration with others. This year’s event was magical – people had such a great time.

We’re so grateful to everyone who came out!”

Student Lori Hess described the event this way… “Not only was it event planning, but it was a chance to use what we’ve been learning about inclusion and put it into practice in a really hands-on way. I am doing my practicum in Trail at the Trail Cooking Program and the group took on some big challenges – they learned the song True Colours in sign language and performed it on stage with the CCSW students and others. Their instructors overcame scheduling and transportation challenges and everybody had a great time meeting and socializing with other members of the community!”

Over 150 people from the region (Grand Forks, Nelson, Trail, Salmo,

and the area) braved winter roads and joined together for an amazing two hours of thought-provoking interactive activities.

Free refreshments, laser, mouth and foot painting, wheelchair scavenger hunt, service animals, storytelling, signed singing, and a lot of fun!

The stage was a busy place with door prizes and spontaneous entertainment.

Connection within the community was “a blast” according to many who participated. We celebrated diversity and reframed the experience of being different together!

All ages were welcome. Support from Community partners and sponsors including CBT, PPWC and Selkirk College helped to make this all possible – we’re grateful!

Animal Control discussed at town hall Grand Forks briefs The City Park Seniors’ Centre in Grand Forks was packed with animal owners and residents concerned with the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary’s (RDKB) proposed animal control bylaw on Tuesday. The meeting was an opportunity for residents to voice concerns and make recommendations for change.

Roxul Inc. to invest $6 million to control emissions Roxul Inc. projects that smoke and blue haze lingering over the city will be gone within a few months, thanks to new air pollution control

technology being installed at its Grand Forks factory.

The tall smoke stack that currently towers over the insulation manufacturer at the corner of Industrial Park Way and 65th Avenue, does meet the environmental permit requirements, said the factory manager Elmar Herrman, but it still pumps out exhaust that doesn’t have a pleasant odour and is visually unattractive.

With Easter taking place a day later, River Valley Community Church is hosting a free easter egg hunt at Grand Forks’ City Park this Saturday (March 30), beginning at 10 a.m.

There will be a puppet show, face painting and other games.

Municipalities and regions are recipients of cash grants Trail briefs The province handed out a sack of cash to Kootenay communities in its latest Strategic Community Investment Fund (SCIF), an unconditional grant payment the province makes from its general revenues to municipalities across the province.

With a total of over $450,000 coming to the Greater Trail area—and $1.23 million to the West Kootenay Boundary—the SCIF includes the traffic fine revenue sharing program and small community and regional district grants.

Each community uses the cash injection to help flesh out its budget, but how that cash is used varies with each municipality.

Trail received the largest overall instalment of cash at $106,698 in the West Kootenay-Boundary, including $22,269 from traffic fine revenue. Trail was the only community in the Greater Trail region to receive traffic fine revenue.

The traffic fine revenue sharing program funding helps offset the cost of policing and community safety, with Trail using its allotment for the city to employ two extra Crime Reduction Unit RCMP officers to provide a “higher level of service.”

Only communities that pay for policing— Trail, Nelson and Castlegar—received the traffic fine revenue.

Tree management studied in Montrose Trees are a desired feature in any community, however, they can also constitute a hazard if not properly cared for.

With this is mind, the Village of Montrose reviewed and carried policy 0670

unchanged, at Monday night council.

The policy pertains to existing trees and how to manage them if they become hazardous in any way.

If there is a danger to the public, from a private tree, such as dead branches hanging over public space, the policy allows us to remove it, said Kevin

Chartres, chief administrative officer of Montrose.

Chartres said the owner will be given a seven-day notice, and if they do not comply,

the village will complete the removal.

The question of liability responsibility had on occasion been in doubt, when a tree deemed to be a

hazard straddled the property line dividing a private lot and a road allowance; and when branches from a tree located on private property extended

Sports Recent tournament a memorable event for Grand Forks peewee hosts

Finishing fifth at the Pee Wee Tier 4 B.C. Hockey Championship in Grand Forks last week didn’t make the event any less memorable for the Grand Forks peewee rep Bruins.

The team had a record of 2-4, including a 4-3 win in its final game against Juan de Fuca but the players got to play in front of the home crowd and had the chance to suit up in the locker room of the local Junior B hockey team (the Grand Forks Border Bruins).

“It was all fun. there was great competition, there was great food at the banquet. All around, it was just fun.”

While Tyson Soobotin got to enjoy the championship like the rest of his teammates from Grand Forks, he also had the honour of singing the national anthem at the opening ceremony.

“The Border Bruins’ locker room is awesome. It looks smaller but when you actually think of it, you have your own stall, so it’s bigger for you.”

Jacob Vautour was sick for part of the championship but that didn’t take away from the experience.

“It was really cool being in front of the home crowd and being in the Bruins’ dressing room, it’s not much bigger than the other dressing room but it’s a fancy dressing room; it’s nice,” Vautour said.

“It was all fun,” said Mehki Dolan.

“There was great competition, there was great food at the banquet. All around, it was just fun.”

“This is the most competitive hockey I’ve ever played,” said Zack Donovan.

“It was really exciting and a great experience and I think we’ll remember this for the rest of our lives.

“Being in the Border Bruins’ locker

room and having access to it all week, it was really fun.”

Darryl Turner, the team’s head coach, will have especially fond memories as it was the last series of games he was behind the bench for – he will be moving away.

“We had 26 wins, 21 losses and three ties and I’ve seen these kids come from when we used to get out-skated by a lot of teams to now, where we out-skate a lot of teams,” Turner explained.

“We’ve developed as a core group. I’ve seen the growth of these kids.

“I’ve been with a lot of them for eight years and it’s been fun to see them develop.”

Ymir and South Slocan to get LED streetlights

The Regional District of Central Kootenay has the green light to convert 104 sodium and mercury vapour street lights to LED bulbs, including ones in Ymir and South Slocan.

According to a news release, the move is expected to reduce energy consumption and save money.

“The RDCK has finally seen the light — the LED light,” said rural Salmo director Hans Cunningham, who made the original motion to pursue LED street lighting.

“This conversion will cut our greenhouse gas emissions and slash roughly 50 per cent in operational

Rossland brief On Monday, the Neighbourhood of Learning committee presented the findings of a recent survey that looked to gauge Rossland resident’s willingness to support the grades that will be moving out from Rossland Secondary School.

The Kootenay Kannibelles took fourth place in the inaugural Roller Derby Association of Canada (RDAC) national tournament held March 15 - 17 in Edmonton, Alta.

Six teams competed at West Edmonton Mall with an estimated 50,000 spectators passing by to watch the action, according to a press release from the West Kootenay Roller Derby League.

The Kannibelles played three bouts in two days and the battle for third came down to the final few seconds of the last bout. Playing the Edmonton E-Ville team, the lead changed hands several times throughout 60-minutes of hard-hitting, fast-skating action. The ‘Belles were defeated 164 - 158 and finished the tournament with a fourth place showing.

The Saskatoon Mindfox took first place in the competition, against other teams from Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia and New Brunswick. Regional tournaments will be held throughout the summer, with another national tournament expected in the fall.

Camp possibly kaput West Kootenay Advertiser

A summer camp that has delighted and hosted Kootenay children for over 80 years is in danger of disappearing.

Camp Koolaree is teetering on the edge of financial ruin as the society that operates the facility prepares to meet early next month to determine if there is the wherewithal to continue its legacy.

Keith Simmonds Members of the board of directors of the Camp Koolaree Society—a group that operates the popular children’s camp on the shores of Kootenay Lake on land owned by the United Church of Canada— were “stunned” to find that the Society had significant debts recently.

Board member Keith Simmonds said the camp’s growing debt – around $25,000 – was reported to United Church members two weeks ago and that it did not have money in the bank to cover operating expenses for the coming year.

Simmonds said that factors including rising costs – fuel, propane, wages – and reduced donations had added up to hit the camp society hard.

Although the provincial body of the United Church has recommended the society not run camps this year, a Hail Mary meeting is being held in hopes of coming up with a plan to save the camp. It is on Satur-

day, April 6 (3 p.m.) at the Castlegar United Church to gauge what will was still out there.

Simmonds said it will take a large influx of donations and new folk on the board to help resurrect the camp from its current calamity. “(The United Church of Canada) tells us the world is changing.

“People don’t want to send kids to a camp like this,” he said.

“I told them we live in rural B.C. And that’s what we do when we go on vacation.”

There is no power in the campground, which is located 10 kilometres east of Nelson, across the water of the West Arm of Kootenay Lake at Six Mile.

Kids are housed in six bare bones cabin with bunk beds, with few amenities that many of the “resort” style camps for kids now possess.

The camp uses stream-fed water, and everything is cooked on propane.

“Kids spend most of the day outside there, running around, swimming, canoeing, playing games, and learning a little bit about living as human beings in community,” said Simmonds.

For over 80 years children aged seven to 13 have attended the camp, learning to tell their own story.

“That’s why it lives so deeply within the hearts of the parents who send their children back, it was life changing for them,” Simmonds said.

Last year 139 kids from the region attended the five weeks of camp offered at Camp Koolaree.

For a fee of only $220 kids have been able to attend a week of camp, with some of the children’s spots sponsored by local

businesses.

Although fees will likely have to be raised if the camp continued, Simmonds said around $40,000 will have to be raised to pay off the debt and to put some money in the bank for operations.

The coming meeting will be able to ascertain if that can be met by the April 15 deadline for the camp.

“If we have the people and the money, we can do it. If we don’t then we won’t,” Simmonds said.

“We are not having the best time of it right now in this area.

“It’s probably the worst time for us to be out asking for help. But it’s also the worst time for us not to be running a camp for kids.

There are probably a lot more kids that could use a little time away right now.”

The camp started in 1932 with a group of people from the Greater Trail region who formed the Kootenay Lake Religious Education Society.

They operated as an independent group until 1972 until “they just ran out of steam.”

The camp was given to the United Church in Fruitvale to operate, where it sat dormant for a year before it was re-energized.

Around 100 people got behind an effort to get it going again.

At the time the local church had no real way to own the land, so the land was given to the provincial body, the B.C. Conference, and it now holds the title and deed to the land, even though it is still operated by the local churches.

Five years ago the B.C. Conference asked the local group to form a society to run the camp.

• Another method is to transport your canine in a crate secured in the back of the truck.

This keeps you both safe, allowing you to focus on driving and not trying to get your dog to stay calm and not jump around. This can cause a huge distraction and may cause a collision. In a crash, your animal will fly around the vehicle if not secured, causing injury to you and themselves.

Energy and innovation apparent in Walla Walla’s wine scene “La Dolce Vita”

I’m a big fan of innovative thinking in the wine industry, where new approaches add economic development value to communities.

My first thoughts on the topic immediately jump to Walla Walla WA, which we have visited a cou-

ple of times in recent years. Incubator wineries, airport development and about two dozen tasting rooms in the downtown core have all been the result of careful planning by the public, private and academic sectors.

In Summerland, the Okanagan Crush Pad has given small startups the chance to gain entry into the very costly wine business by offering a complete range of services. The early results

have been remarkable.

In Spokane recently, we got another look at how wineries can introduce wines and expand their markets.

Nectar Tasting Room, downtown on Stevens, is a partnership of sorts. While the owner is a young blogger and wine enthusiast, we learned on our visit that the building’s rent is paid by five wineries that supply the tasting room with wine.

New retirement community becomes popular social hub

by Kathleen Thomas A mere three short months since the official opening of Silver Kettle Village, Grand Forks’ newest retirement community, and the place is already a hub of social activity. Residents barely had time to unpack treasured possessions before they were able to meet and mingle with other like-minded, independent seniors. The activities schedule is designed to give everyone the chance to socialize at their own speed. From a basic game of cribbage to full day outings, residents find they can choose activities that best meet their needs. The biggest event for February, a Valentine’s Day Dance, had Silver Kettle Village dwellers and dance enthusiasts from town cutting a rug to local band Buck Naked and the Saddle Tramps.

The band, as well known for their music as for the fact that Grand Forks mayor Brian Taylor is a founding member, dished out their popular brand of bluesy country rock.

The regular dances held at Silver Kettle Village are a fun way to spend an evening with your spouse or to meet new friends and dance partners. Plentiful refreshments wait on the sidelines.

“With all the chores I used to do at home, I didn’t have time to think about social activities,” said Kay Hummel. “But since I moved here I don’t have to worry about a thing. All the housekeeping, transportation, security and meals are provided so I can spend more time with my friends. Like enjoying the Valentine’s Dance.”

Programming at Silver Kettle Village is designed to meet the needs of all types, from folks who prefer more alone time to regular social butterflies.

“We want residents here to feel like they are in a village, with all the opportunities and benefits a small community can provide. This can be anything from a friendly smile in the morning to a walk with

a friend or a full-on dance party,” said Community Manager, Michele Shillaker.

Healthy social activities are a key element of programming at the Village. Residents can participate as much as they wish in classes, outings and walks down the treed streets of the city. Because the seniors at Silver Kettle Village are invested in living their best lives, they can mingle in the common areas or have favorite guests to visit in their private suites. Grandkids are always keen to be invited to a sleepover with their grandparents.

But social options aren’t the only ones packed into the monthly calendar. There are artistic, fitness and spiritual choices as well. Highlights of the past month included a Super Bowl party for sports fans, a guest appearance by can-can dancers and Chinese New Year’s celebrations. The calendar for March is also packed with events. Residents are looking forward to a bus trip that includes an art gallery visit and lunch at Omega, musical performances, a special Easter dinner buffet, and a ‘50s themed lunch at the Village with favorite foods of that era, By the time local officials cut the ribbon on the newly constructed community in December 2012, most of the 48 independent living units at Silver Kettle Village were already spoken for. A near-full house now means there are plenty of options for forming new friendships and finding new hobbies. The balance of independence, privacy, staff hospitality and security is the priority for this retirement community.

Spokane’s downtown core, like those of most North American cities, has had its challenges over the years. Shopping malls and big box stores have drawn away a huge percentage of people, lured by selection and free and easy parking.

The city is fortunate to have a terrific park just to the north of the downtown core, where an exposition many years ago left a

With Easter just days away, and a tradition of gift giving around this time of year, the BC SPCA urges the public to not buy bunnies as Easter gifts.

Craig Naherniak, general manager of humane education for the BC SPCA, says it may come as a surprise that rabbits and children are not a great match.

“Rabbits are great companions for adults, but are not appropriate pets for small children despite the pervasive media images of children with rabbits,” he says. “They don’t like to be picked up, as they are prey animals and picking them up distresses them.

Like any pet, they require proper care and can live up to 12 years.”

Each year SPCA branches across the province receive hundreds of abandoned bunnies after the holiday has passed and the excitement of a new pet has worn off and the reality of pet care sets in.

“Many others are abandoned to the wild to fend for themselves.

“These domesticated rabbits often fall prey to predators such as coyotes, are susceptible to disease, or end up starving.” Alternatively, he says, if there are no predators the rabbits may flourish and upset the balance of nature by multiplying into a serious overpopulation problem.

People who are

prepared and willing to make a commitment to a pet rabbit should learn about what caring for this unique and wonderful animal involves.

Rabbits sleep during the day, need fresh vegetables, Timothy hay, and pellets to stay healthy, and should also be spayed or neutered to prevent unwanted litters and to reduce territorial aggression.

Like cats, rabbits can easily be trained to use a litter box, which means they can be free-roaming rather than caged.

The best relationships are the ones in which we care for each other.

Rabbits also need exercise, daily grooming, and a varied diet that includes chew items that will keep the rabbit’s constantly growing teeth worn down.

They should be housed indoors, which means guardians must rabbit-proof their home, which includes concealing exposed electrical cords and providing enough safe, chewable toys so the rabbit won’t be tempted to chew on other items, such as furniture and books.

The total cost for

food, bedding, and other necessities will run $3,000 to $4,000 over the animal’s lifetime.

So if you can go the distance, adopt a bunny.

Visitors can buy wine by the glass or bottle or, as we did with friends who introduced us to the place, pay $5 to sample five different wines. The sample fee is waved with purchases.

There are more than 40 different wines available, so recurring visits will offer new tasting selections, which are

changed regularly.

Our first, a Sauvignon Blanc, did not taste like a Sauv Blanc from cooler climates like the Okanagan or New Zealand. It tasted more like a Viognier which was our second taste, albeit a blend.

The unquestioned highlight was a red blend from Northwest Cellars called Intrigue. Silky smooth and very full-bodied, this was a $40

wine in a $28 bottle.

Northwest also makes a Malbec and Carmenere and I look forward to sampling those on another visit.

A 2009 Zinfandel from Hard Row to How was also a surprise, not being the typical fruit bomb that one gets in most American bottles. The Zin is not listed on the winery web site— but a 2010 Primitivo is. Maybe there is a story in there some-

where as Zinfandel and Primitivo are the same grape.

Since our visit, I’ve been wondering if this winery partnership model for a tasting room/ wine bar can work in B.C., or even Alberta.

Wouldn’t it be great, for instance, to walk into a nice wine bar in a city and find a complete selection of Naramata Bench, for example, wines available?
