With that oath in mind, Special Olympic athletes have been taking to fields, gymnasiums, pools and bowling alleys across the country since 1980, the year the organization was formed.

In Creston, dozens of athletes meet regularly to practice and compete in sports like bowling, swimming, soccer, floor hockey and, soon, gymnastics.

The groups range from small — three swimmers in the new program so far — to large — about 35 bowlers lace up their shoes each Tuesday at Borderline Bowling.

“The programs are completely dependent on volunteers,” said Cyra Frisk, who works as a community development manager for BC Special Olympics in the Kootenays. “If we can find volunteers to coach and help out in other ways, there are lots of programs available. A few people can make a program happen.”

Special Olympics is designed to accommodate athletes with a wide range of abilities.

Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) board chair John Kettle said on Monday that he is satisfied with a 201314 budget that will increase by just over one per cent over the previous year.

“We worked very hard to keep the budget in check,” he said. “There are some increases, such as 25 per cent to the cost of water for Erickson residents, that I’m not very happy with, but overall I think it’s a good budget.”

The projected 2013 budget, expected to be approved today at the board’s regular meeting, totals $58,686,050, up by 1.14 per cent over last year’s $58,022,994.

“This plan is the result of the board’s ongoing commitment to serve residents in the most cost-effective means possible while delivering a multitude of services throughout a large and diverse region,” said Kettle.

“We are a complex organization with growing demands to deliver more services and this poses a challenge as we prepare our budget.”

.C.’s HST will be charged for the last time on Sunday, nearly three years after it’s July 2010 implementation — which means that time is short for local businesses to register to once again charge provincial sales tax.

The harmonized sales tax, which combined the five per cent federal GST and the seven per cent PST, was defeated in a referendum in August 2011. While it lowered the tax on things like disposable diapers, residential electricity and some new homes, it raised the tax on a far wider range, including restaurant meals, funeral services, gym memberships, postage and more.

tice and then a scrimmage. Some have been playing for many years, and their skills show it. Steven Sterling takes a pass, rips the puck past the goaltender and into the top corner of the net, gives a quick fist pump and heads to the back of the line to await his next turn.

The always exuberant Kathy Schmidt, face red from the exertion of the effort she puts into everything she does, congratulates her teammates each time they make a good shot or pass. Schmidt’s mom, Shelagh, watches from the sidelines. A longtime coach of Special Olympics bowling, she is a familiar face at the bowling alley, where Schmidt and Sterling both excel.

The gymnasium takes on the same atmosphere it had for the thousands of floor hockey games that were played when the building was South Creston Elementary School. Cheers echo around the walls, some athletes are ready each time their turn comes up and others need some direction and encouragement to participate.

Coaches who are new to Special Olympics aren’t just thrown into the role. Orientation sessions and training are provided at no cost.

“If someone is willing to make that kind of commitment of time and energy, it’s the least we can do for them,” Frisk said.

And volunteers aren’t needed only for coaching. A board of directors works behind the scenes to keep programs going, recruit coaches and assistants and arrange training, organize activities and generally ensure that the athletes have opportunities to get whatever it takes to keep them active and engaged.

“We have room for people of all ages and abilities to get involved as volunteers,” Chlopecki said. “Special Olympics is an important part of our community and it’s worth the effort to keep it going.”

The board commissioned the review to critically examined governance and service delivery in the RDCK. The consultant made numerous recommendations to improve overall effectiveness of the organization. Recommendations included the addition of staff to address growth and demand for services such as parks, bylaw enforcement and planning while at the same time meeting statutory requirements and organizational demands

(human resources and finance).

Some organizational restructuring has been undertaken to help offset the financial impacts of staffing increases.

“I am proud of my fellow directors and our staff for their hard work and commitment to the budget process and for serving the public with such dedication,” said Kettle. “Thank you to those residents who participated in budget meetings — we greatly value and appreciate your input.”

A member of the Regional District of Central Kootenay Area B advisory planning commission (APC) is encouraging those interested in the future of the valley’s farmland to get informed about changes proposed in the creation of Area B’s official community plan (OCP).

If adopted, the proposal — which would have to be approved by the Agricultural Land Commission — would see the minimum property size in Lister drop from 20 acres to 10 inside the Agricultural Land Reserve and to 2.5 acres outside the ALR. “It impacts our available farmland,” said Area B advisory planning commissioner Pat Martin. “It’s restructuring the land zoning and land size in Lister demonstrably.”

While the OCP hasn’t yet gone through the required approval process, the commissioner wants to be sure that this topic is discussed beforehand.

“We get to go through and point out the changes we’re having a problem with,” said Martin.

Lot sizes were on the agenda of the APC’s meeting on Tuesday, and the Creston Valley Food Action Coalition and Lister Community Association will also discuss it, in meetings held, respectively, on April 1 at the College of the Rockies and April 9 at the Lister Community

Hall. Both meetings are at 7 p.m.

While smaller lot sizes may help more people to move to the valley, the APC wants farming to take priority.

“We don’t mind increasing the valley population, but giving up our good farmland doesn’t make any sense,” said Martin. “We want to help our farmers stay afloat.”

Area B director John Kettle said the idea of smaller lot sizes came from local farmers, some of them fourth-generation, who want to sell of small portions of their land to have income that would allow them to spend the rest of their lives on their land. As it is, 20-acre lots are being sold to people who don’t farm.

“So we’re losing that land anyway,” Kettle said.

Regardless of personal opinions, public discussion of the OCP is premature, he added.

“The APC has been tasked with drafting the OCP,” said Kettle. “That includes a full public process. What would be unfortunate would be if people take one little tidbit out of the OCP and highlight that before the public process. I would suggest that everyone wait until the full public process and wait until everyone has a say-so. …

“It would be unfortunate if individual members began trying to usurp the activities of the APC. This is a group effort. It has to remain a group effort.”

Men in custody following home invasion

Two men arrested last week in a March 20 home invasion suspected to be linked to a drug dispute remain in custody as Creston RCMP continue their investigation.

“Last Wednesday, police were called to a residence on Seventh Avenue where a home invasion was reported to be taking place,” Cpl. Charlotte Joa said on Monday. “Two men were arrested in the residence.”

The men, later determined to be in breach of probation orders, are being held pending a court appearance.

A firearm was discharged when the men were attempting to gain entry to the residence. One suspect is believed to have shot a lock to open an exterior door.

Police Beat Creston RCMP responded to a total of 61 calls for service from March 18-24.

March 18 •A vehicle reported to driving on Helen Street without a licence plate was not located by police.

•Wood pallets were stolen from a Lloyd Road address.

•Police received a report of a reckless driver on Canyon Street but the vehicle could not be located.

•A complaint about the possible fraudulent use of a credit card was resolved without incident.

•A seasonal residence on Eastman Avenue in Riondel was broken into when thieves kicked in a basement door. Liquor was stolen.

•The licence plate sticker was removed from a vehicle on Settlement Road and the thief then spread mud on the plate to cover the space.

•A report of assault is under investigation.

•Police were unable to locate a youth, reported to be about 10 years old, who was reported to be hitchhiking on Highway 3 at West Creston Road. He was reported to be wearing light clothing in stormy weather.

•A Toyota sustained extensive damage when it struck an abutment on Highway 3 west of Creston after the driver lost control in icy conditions.

•A 911 call from Juniper Road was attributed to an erroneous attempt to dial 411.

•A male was arrested after a reported assault in the 16000 block of Highway 3A. His female victim was taken to hospital in Nelson after reportedly being punched in the face.

•Investigation of a possible credit card fraud at a local

business alerted the business owner to a faulty credit card machine, which has now been repaired. The transactions were reversed.

•A BC Care Card found in the 3700 block of Highway 3 has been returned to its owner.

March 19 •Minor damage resulted when a vehicle backed into another in a 16th Avenue South parking lot.

•A boys’ mountain bike was stolen from the 1500 block of Hillside Street between March 14 and 18.

•Police are investigating a theft from a semi trailer in the 1200 block of Erickson Street.

•A male was seen measuring the exterior dimensions of a house in the 300 block of Fourth Avenue South was advised that owner is not planning to sell.

•A report was made about possible drug activity in the Seventh Avenue South area.

•A female reported that she was possibly followed by two males as she walked along the 1800 block of Highway 3A. March 20 •Three youths were reported to be starting a bonfire on Cook Street at Sixth Avenue South. They were gone when police arrived but small, slightly burned sticks were found on the site.

•An abandoned 911 call was attributed to a child playing with the phone.

•No injuries were reported to a vehicle’s occupants when it struck a deer on Highway 3 east of Yahk.

•Two fire extinguishers were set off during a break and entry to a church on Cavell Street.

•Mischief to a fence was reported in the 400 block of 20th Avenue South.

•A rear bumper was damaged in a March 20 hit and run on 11th Avenue North.

•Minor damage resulted when a vehicle backed into another in a 16th Avenue South parking lot.

•Three mailboxes were knocked over on Murdoch Street.

March 23 •A red Toyota pickup being driven by a possibly impaired driver on Canyon Street was not located.

March 24 •A vehicle windshield was smashed overnight in the 1500 block of Canyon Street.

•No injuries to occupants were reported when a vehicle collided with a deer in the 6200 block of Meadow Creek Road.

•An abandoned 911 call was attributed to pocket dialing.

•A female and male each complained about receiving unwanted text messages from the other. They were both advised to stop the practice.

Prison sentence handed down in Riondel death GREG NESTEROFF Nelson Star A Crawford Bay man is appealing his two-and-a-halfyear jail sentence for an all-terrain vehicle crash north of Riondel that claimed his friend's life.

Cory Medhurst was convicted last December in Creston Law Courts of driving with a blood alcohol reading over .08 and criminal negligence causing the death of Brandon Salviulo, 20.

Judge Grant Sheard gave Medhurst 24 months on the first charge and 30 months on the second, to be served concurrently, and also banned him from driving for three years.

Court heard that on July 12, 2009, the two men were manning a checkpoint during an ATV poker run raising money for the Riondel fire department. Both were drinking beer and neither wore a helmet. On their way home, they were going about 70 km/h on a logging road when their ATV went down an embankment. Salviulo died on the scene of severe head injuries.

According to the ruling, Medhurst's blood alcohol content was between .22 and .26, about three times the legal limit, while Salviulo's was .06. The central issue for the judge to decide was who was driving.

Four witnesses — two paramedics and two fellow ATVers who responded to Medhurst's cries for help — testified that immediately after the incident, Medhurst told them repeatedly, “I killed my best friend,” and, “I killed Brandon.”

One paramedic said Medhurst explained Salviulo tapped him on the shoulder, and when he turned his head, the ATV veered right and went over the bank.

However, when Medhurst gave a statement to police two months later, he said he couldn't remember who was driving.

Soon after he told them Salviulo

had been at the wheel, and repeated this at trial. He argued his earlier statements to paramedics were unreliable given his emotional and physical state.

But the judge rejected his testimony as inconsistent and contradictory and convicted him on both counts.

Medhurst is married with a young daughter and co-proprietor of Kootenay Forge, a blacksmith shop at Crawford Bay that employed six people who were laid off pending the outcome of the case.

At sentencing, Medhurst submitted more than 100 letters of reference, six of which were entered into the record.

"There has been no issue with respect to his behaviour since the incident," Sheard wrote. "He is a dedicated volunteer in his small community. ... His volunteerism began before these offences. They are not contrived."

Medhurst was a firefighter and emergency medical responder and has taken counselling since the incident, the judge added.

The Crown asked for a jail sentence of three years plus a five-year driving ban while the defence countered with a request for 90 days to be served on weekends plus community service and probation. The defence argued a lengthy jail sentence would likely mean the end of Medhurst's business and financial ruin for his family.

The judge noted that following criminal code changes in 2007, conditional sentences aren't allowed in cases of "serious personal injury."

Salviulo's parents, sister, foster sister, and a family friend all read victim impact statements in court, from which Sheard concluded "the profound impact of these offences is particularly apparent ... They continue to experience the pain of their loss on a daily basis."

and the fact Medhurst didn't ensure Salviulo wore a helmet were all aggravating factors, but they were mitigated by Medhurst's clean driving record and lack of criminal history.

"He is otherwise of good character and a very positive member of his community," the judge wrote. "All the evidence suggests this is a one-time tragic event."

APPEAL PENDING Medhurst's lawyer Don Skogstad said in an interview an appeal of the verdict has been filed and is expected to be heard in Kelowna but not for at least six months. In the meantime, Medhurst is serving his sentence in the Lower Mainland.

"There's no current intention to apply for bail. Maybe later," he said.

Skogstad said Salviulo's death was a "terrible tragedy for such a small place" but Medhurst is "extremely well-regarded in the community."

"Never in my career — and it's a long one now — have I seen that many letters of support for anyone," he said.

However, Salviulo's family thinks Sheard made the right decision.

"We believe the judge was correct in his verdict of guilty," Salviulo's father Enzo told the Star. "Mr. Medhurst will never serve as severe a sentence as my wife and I due to his actions that led to the death of our son."

MP pleased with federal budget

The federal budget announced last week by Finance Minister Jim Flaherty is good for Canada and the KootenayColumbia riding, MP David Wilks said from Ottawa on Friday.

“I think that it’s a great document that provides Canadians with the understanding that there are opportunities for local governments and other organizations to benefit from funds that are going to be provided,” he told the Advance.

He said it is important for people to recognize that the government is ensuring a balanced budget by 2015. It would be the first balanced Canadian budget since 2008, the year the Conservatives lowered the GST to five per cent, which ended a string of 11 consecutive surplus budgets.

Wilks cited the Community Improvement Fund as being among the direct benefits to the Kootenays. It will distribute $32.2 billion over 10 years, starting with $2.9 billion in 2014.

“The new fund affords communities greater flexibility to allocate resources toward a broader range of infrastructure priorities,” he said.

The minster of finance expanded the definition of “infrastructure” from water, sewers and roads to include broadband and connectivity,

culture, tourism, sports and recreation, which could have a range of benefits in the Creston Valley, Wilks said.

“Although Creston does have a relatively new facility, it does require upkeep,” he said. “Or Creston might have other things they want to improve on.”

A gas tax fund, he said, will be directed into infrastructure projects across the country, with $21.8 billion available over the next decade. B.C. receives $220230 million annually, which it then distributes to projects it selects.

“What’s really neat about it is it is now going to be indexed at two per cent per year,” he said.

“Before, it was flat.”

The first-term MP said a $1.25 billion investment in affordable housing over five years will help create a “homelessness partnering strategy” to fund new construction, renovation, homeowner assistance, rent supplements, shelter allowances and accommodations for victims of violence.

In what he described as “a small victory for me”, the budget allocates $19 million for Trans-Canada Highway upgrades in national parks.

“Aside from Mount Revelstoke, Yoho and Glacier, I’m not aware of any other national park which the TransCanada flows through,” he said.

“If that is the case, that $19 million will be dedicated to Yoho, Glacier and Mount Revelstoke.”

Olympics that really are special

I’m not a big fan of the Olympic Games. I can take them or leave them. But the Special Olympics are another thing entirely.

Recently, I spent a couple of hours at the Creston Education Centre gym, where soccer and floor hockey practices were taking place. I couldn’t help but smile; many of the athletes are people I’ve known for many years and it was a great pleasure to see them in a different context than the ones I am used to.

The best part, though, was to see that sports can be activities where competition isn’t everything, where people with huge differences in skill can get out onto the same floor or field or bowling alley and play the games to the best of their ability.

Bowling is the Special Olympics activity with which I am most familiar. For a decade I helped with the care of men with a variety of physical and mental challenges and bowling was one of their favourite sports. Wincing at the sight and sound of balls being lobbed in a high arc halfway down the alley was a weekly event, as were the high fives with anyone who got a strike. It always seemed to be especially cool that bowlers who were lucky to score 60 in a five-pin game could enjoy their games as much as ones racking up a 200 or better score.

Smaller lots concern APC member To the Editor: Do you know your APCs? No? Most people don’t. If you live in the rural Creston Valley, you have a group of volunteers who work hard to serve your needs and to represent your wishes to your Regional District of Central Kootenay director. They are not elected.

They are appointed by the director and although he/she is not required to comply with their opinions or wishes, they meet regularly. They are your area A, B or C advisory planning commissions. I am a recently appointed commissioner for Area B. We review zoning applications and try to keep the director informed on the needs of residents of Area B. Currently, we are reviewing your official community plan, which deals with decisions as to how the area will be developed or not developed. So that each rural area is able to progress with its own uniqueness, we design an official community plan based on workshops, surveys, etc. that reflect your wishes.

For example, the Area B APC is currently considering one recommendation brought forward by the director of Area B and the RDCK senior planner: that minimum lot sizes in Lister will be reduced from their current requirements of 20 acres within the Agricultural Land Reserve. The proposed change is for smaller lots: a minimum lot size within the ALR of 10 acres and a minimum lot size outside the ALR of 2.5 acres. Will this affect available farm land within Lister? Of course it will. Will it drastically change

the face of this predominantly agricultural community forever? Probably. Do you care?

If you do, the final OCP must be approved by a process, including public open houses (and we all know how well these are attended, as they stray from the former meeting-style approach we have for so long enjoyed in this valley). There is also talk of a plebiscite or opinion poll to give final approval or denial to this plan once people have deliberated on the subject.

Want to know more about the pros and cons of smaller minimum lot sizes in Lister? In early April, the Lister Community Association and the Creston Valley Food Action Coalition are each holding meetings where you are welcome to attend and listen to the discussion and perhaps even ask some questions of your own. As well, consider dropping by your local area APC from time to time. These meetings are legislated to be open to the public. Find out when/where your APC meets, now that you know your APCs! Green ideas attract new member To the Editor: It has come to my attention that some people find some of my ideas unreasonable. I’m all right with that. In a democracy, even unreasonable ideas can be discussed. In a fascist dictatorship, unpopular and foolish ideals are forced upon a populous by a leader not elected by the majority of the citizens.

I do not suppress government studies that contradict industry, nor do I let industry findings become government policy. I don’t print money for my friends or spy on law-abiding citizens, and I would never think of letting a foreign police force into my country. I do not cower to industry or hide behind their media or allow their media to brainwash me and my family with ideas of infinite growth, terrorism, safety, magic carpets and flying elephants. I back up everything with scientific fact on my website because I believe in government openness, scientific progress and human decency.

My ideals may seem unreasonable to some. Personally, I think it is foolish to poison the air, water, soil and food and expect to lead a long, healthy and prosperous life. It is selfish and irresponsible to take everything for myself and leave nothing for my children and grandchildren. I might be wrong, but looking at western society today, my mamma might have taught me right.

This is why I have joined the Greens. They are not puppets of the New World Order. They believe that democracy and open government will lead us down a better path, that people, not industry, drive economic development and prosperity, and that education of the populous is key to the future, not little boxes stacked on top of one another. Decentralized government, localized energy production, 100mile diets, decentralized banking, nutrition, and accountability. Who can argue with these ideals?

You can vote for orange or red, but history states that you will be banging your head on the wall in five years like you are today. And 12 years ago. And 10 years before that, and 10 years before that and so on and so forth. It is time to stop the cycle of stupidity. It is time for the Greens.

Time for berries and small fruit

Spring is here, with longer days and, here’s hoping, a little more sunshine.

We are busy getting everything organized as best possible. Keeping the crops happy in the greenhouses is always a little easier when the sun shines. By the time you are reading this we should be open for the season.

Fresh into the nursery this spring and in the small fruit department are gogi berries!

They look to grow as large vining shrubs. Their berries are said to have the highest levels of antioxidants as well as plenty of vitamins and minerals. They are drought tolerant once established and cold hardy to the prairies.

We also carry Borealis and Polar Jewel haskap berries. These are actually kinds of honeysuckles. They are said to fruit early as with strawberries.

Their fruits have a taste reminiscent of Wild Blueberries. They will grow to six feet and are hardy to the Arctic Circle.

We actually have quite a large assortment of small fruits for 2013. How about some sea buckthorn? These large shrubs have little yellow flowers and gray green foliage. Their fruits are orange berries

jams. These shrubs have great fall colour, too.

Red Lake currants have small red jewel-like fruit borne in clusters, and are easy to pick as you grab the whole bunch at once. They make a great addition to any fruit jam and really nice jelly. Crandall black currants are large with a sweet, tart flavor. They can be eaten fresh or used in jams, jelly, syrup and juices. They are reported to have five times more vitamin C than oranges. In addition to all that, the flowers have a delightful clove fragrance.

The nursery’s small fruit section is by no means limited to just these new items. We carry all kinds of strawberries, raspberries and two kinds of rhubarb.

Gooseberries like Poor Man Pink and Welcome Green can be found there, too.

Spring arrives in the birch grove

There are several places along the Creston Mountain Trail that I repeatedly stop at or wander around in to take a closer look. Of course, I usually stop, like most people do, at the viewpoints where one can look down from a rock bluff on the forest and the Kootenay River flats below. Another

Ed McMackin stopping place for me is at one of the several little brooks and seeps to be found along the trail. These water and nourish a few different plants than what are to be found in drier areas on the mountain slope.

Then, other spots that get my closer scrutiny are rocky outcrops and low cliffs scattered throughout the forest. The dappled shade at these spots and the eastern exposure of this mountain slope preserve enough moisture for sustaining little-observed mosses and miniature ferns.

One area along the trail that I find captivating is a birch grove. Ascending a steep part of the trail brings one to a bench forested with sombre-barked birch trees.

Amongst these grey-barked trees there is only a scattering of evergreen trees, quite atypical of most of the mountain slope. In summer, these grey-barked trees have much less contrast against a background of green foliage than do white birch, whereas in

winter the grey-barked birch stand out against a snow covered landscape. Otherwise, the role of these grey-barked trees and white birch are similar in providing partial and/or dappled shade for plants and shrubs that do best in or can tolerate this kind of environment.

Spring comes to the forest floor in the birch grove with a burst of growth something like in the eastern hardwood forests, except the latter, as I remember, produce a greater array of showy spring flowers like white trillium, wake robin, jack in the pulpit, mayapple, hepatica, violets, eastern spring beauty and more. Strong sunrays, unfiltered by leafless and/or unexpanded tree foliage, bathe the forest floor, warming and imparting energy to the unfolding ground foliage and blooms. The birch grove puts on its own showing of spring flowers before the leaves are out or totally expanded — fairy bells, yellow wood and early blue violets, western clematis and the often unnoticed, minutely red-flowered falsebox.

Birch trees have a mildly sweet sap. It is not unpleasant to the taste. I have heard of some local people drinking it for the nutrients it is said to provide. Insects enjoy it, too. Winter storm-broken twigs and damaged branches exude the sweet sap. Various kinds of once-hibernating butterflies imbibe the sugary liquid. It is a main source of nourishment and

moisture for insects coming out their winter sleep too soon to find nectar-yielding flowers.

Locally, there aren’t many tree groves that are made up of mostly one deciduous tree species. There are many cedar groves where the forest floor is almost devoid of visible plants, excepting mushrooms, fungi and Indian pipe.

Viewable from the trail is another grove of a different type of tree with a bark similar to the greybarked birch. The only time it may be noticed is when it is in flower.

Looking down at just the right time, in late spring, from one of the lookout points along the trail, one may see a white patch in the forest canopy. It is made up of the blooms of the seldom-noticed black cherry. The only other grove of singular-species trees I have found is a group of English oak trees. This oak species was introduced but how they got in this remote location can only be guessed. Perhaps one of the floods occurring in past years carried in an acorn that eventually produced this oak grove.

Now for the latest news on spring’s progress. Yellow sagebrush buttercups have, in several locations, already initiated March’s march of spring flowers. Why not check out the habitat where you might find them?

If you had been applying the techniques of mindful eating, you would have recognized eye hunger the moment you saw the billboard image of the pizza, and chuckled when the thought of eating entered your mind. You would have labelled the urge to follow the aroma of baking crust into the shop as nose hunger and walked right past the restaurant. Within minutes, all thoughts of eating pizza would have dissolved into awareness of the promise of spring, your lightness of step and the sound of birdsong.

Mindful eating begins with

consciously and intentionally assessing the roots of hunger before eating. If the hunger is based in an automatic conditioned response to sense stimulation, memory or emotion, mindfulness can help you notice and let go of the thought of eating. If the hunger is based in a true physiological need, then mindfulness can increase enjoyment of a nutritious meal or a healthy snack and let you know when you’ve had enough.

Luft and Penner playing at Snoring Sasquatch SUBMITTED

The Snoring Sasquatch will be hosting a double header, with Cara Luft and Cam Penner playing on April 4.

Juno Award-winning singer-songwriter-guitarist extraordinaire Luft is that rare artist steeped in folk and traditional roots music almost from birth yet willing to alter that fabric and stretch the boundaries, not afraid to bend genres and styles. Her much-anticipated third solo album, Darlingford, is a stunning new collection of songs drawn from her recent life experiences and informed throughout with her indomitably optimistic spirit and impeccable musical instincts.

Recorded primarily in old wooden churches and home studios across the Canadian prairies, the album shines a bright light on Luft’s skill at turning personal heartbreak into universal themes that resonate deeply with listeners. Luft deserves her solid reputation as one of Canada’s finest live performers. Her engaging, down-home style comes wrapped in a warm and delicious sense of humour. A co-founder of folk trio the Wailin’ Jennys, Luft was the spark behind the group.

Her spirit and innate musicianship were instrumental in their rise to the forefront of the North American roots music scene. Since leaving the trio, Luft has wowed audiences and critics across North America and Europe with her solo performances. She’s the real deal, there’s nothing pretentious about her.

Singing uncompromising songs about redemption and truth, Penner’s is a voice for the disenfranchised, a storyteller for those who never reach their destination. The symphony of sound and lyricism showcase the inevitable evolution of a growing artist. It’s folk, it’s rock n’ roll — it’s Penner breathing fire into every note and lyric.

Look no further than the title track of the new album, To Build a Fire, to understand Cam Penner: “I’ve got to know that you’ll make it through the night, make it through the day, that you’ll make it out alive, that you’ll always have water running down the mountain side, always have shelter, know to build a fire.” This album is a rallying call. It reaches out, boldly and courageously into present-day existence.

His fifth and soon to be released new album finds Penner exploring new textures and bolder sounds. Though more stripped down than 2011’s Gypsy Summer, Penner finds new textures and bolder sounds on his fifth release. The fractured rootsy persona still creeps in but this is not a depressing album. To Build a Fire is full of hope. It’s full of love. It’s electrifying and provoking. It’s full of everything we should be looking for, not only musically, but in life.

The lush beauty of the opening brass track lures you in but leaves you wondering what is to come — then it begins.

Floorboards stomped. Kick drums kicked.

Feet stumbled. Thighs, knees, hands slapped and clapped. Voices strained and

bent. Fingers gripped, grabbed and picked. Arms and hands flung. Body and sound thrown against wood and metal.

The live show is as fragile as it is grand. Like watching a tightrope walker or a trapeze artist at work. The chemistry between Penner and his musical companion Jon Wood is a spontaneous mix of sound and lyrics.

Penner ’s last album, Western Canadian Music Award-nominated Gypsy Summer, debuted at number 16 on the folk Billboard charts. It was featured along with a full interview on NPR’s All Music Considered and toured the through both eastern and western Canada, the U.K., Scotland, the Netherlands, Germany and France.

At 18, Penner left small-town life to wander the highways and back roads of North America. A year later, he found himself in Chicago serving mystery soup and stale bread to 250 homeless men a day. Next, a women and children’s shelter, then youth shelters and detox centers.

For 13 years, he immersed himself in this subculture absorbing as much raw humanity as he could. When the shift was over he would spend endless cathartic hours writing and playing his guitar, exorcising his emotions through music.

After becoming a self-taught expert on homelessness, he decided to become a full time touring artist, meanwhile becoming homeless himself.

Nominations are open to all, you can nominate your self or favourite artists or acts, we want to make sure we have a great representation of the talent that the Kootenays have to offer.

Nominations are open from March 1 to the 29th.

Spring Festivals Around the Globe

Many people might not associate spring with festivals, but that does not mean this season of rebirth isn’t host to festivals celebrated globally. In fact, people of various religions and cultures anxiously anticipate the arrival of spring, which coincides with a host of festivals commemorating important historical events. A few festivals that will be celebrated this spring include: * Purim: The Jewish festival of Purim does not always occur during the spring season, as its date correlates to the Hebrew calendar. In 2011, however, the festival does end at nightfall on March 20, which is the first day of spring. This festival commemorates the deliverance of the Jewish people throughout the ancient Persian Empire from the plot by Haman to exterminate them, as recorded in the Old Testament Book of Esther. Jews mark the festival with a recitation of the Book of Esther and by

giving mutual gifts of food and drink to one another. Additional traditions include giving to the poor or less fortunate, a celebratory meal and even the wearing of masks and costumes. * Holi: Commonly referred to as the Festival of Colors, Holi is a religious festival celebrated by Hindus and Sikhs each spring. Primarily observed in India, Nepal and Sri Lanka, the celebration includes throwing colored powder and scented water at one another. Songs are sung and food preparations often begin many days in advance. But the festival’s main emphasis is on the burning of the Holika, a holy bonfire symbolic of the annihilation of the demoness Holika. * Easter: Christians are well aware that Easter, the most important day in the Christian calendar, occurs each spring.

Easter commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ three days after his crucifixion. For Catholics, the arrival of Easter marks the end of Lent, a season that begins on Ash Wednesday and focuses on prayer and sacrifice. Catholics typically “give

up” something for Lent, such as avoiding the consumption of meat on Fridays throughout the Lenten season. The Friday before Easter, which always falls on a Sunday, is called Good Friday and is also one of the holiest days of the year in the Christian faith. This day commemorates the crucifixion of Christ. * Nowruz: The celebration of the ancient Iranian New Year, Nowruz is often referred to as the Persian New Year. Nowruz marks the first day of spring and the beginning of the year in Iran and is celebrated on the day of the vernal equinox. Today, the festival of Nowruz is typically celebrated in countries that were either influenced or under the control of the Persian Empire. Such countries include Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. Traditions include spending a day enjoying nature and spending the first few days of the festival visiting older members of the family. TF114595

Artist brings life to wildlife drawings

Guy Hobbs has the rare gift of bringing facial expression, even emotion, into his animal drawings. It isn’t often that one can look at a pencil drawing of an animal and recognize an expression of feeling, maybe sadness or joy.

Looking at Hobbs’ pencil drawing of his greyhound, Mo, one has to blink twice as the subject becomes alive. The texture of the inside of Mo’s ear, the expression in the dog’s eyes and the softness of the fur on the ears are so real you can almost touch it through your eyes. This is multidimensional wildlife drawing at its best.

Hobbs, who will share his drawing skills in a three-day art seminar offered this summer at the College of the Rockies, grew up in Southeast England. He took art training, specialising in design, later moving into abstract. For the next 21 years he enjoyed a successful career in design, yet he always felt a passion for the outdoors.

Since a child, he has been a wildlife enthusiast.

He watched zoo animals, as well as those in the wild, and became fascinated by the big difference in behaviour, movement and expression. Eventually he became so interested in recording animals in the wild expressing their visceral reactions to the natural world, he began spending more time outside drawing them. This connection, which took him to a much deeper level of himself and his art, was more exciting and fulfilling. It took him beyond the thrills of designing for the fast-paced economy, to a greater level of sensitivity and peace. Now, each day is a new learning experience, a gift.

It was Hobbs’ wife, Kerry, who encouraged him to combine his passion for wildlife with his artistic training, and has been very supportive in helping him make the switch from design artist to wildlife artist. Once he made the decision to switch careers, he discovered himself as a different person. It was challenging to change his beliefs about work.

“Spending time outside drawing and watching animals and birds just doesn’t feel like work when it comes from the heart, instead of from trained techniques,” said the Creston Valley resident, whose art is displayed in various places round the West Kootenay.

Now he enjoys spending a couple of days sitting in a swamp with his camera, then three days choosing which picture to draw. With tongue in cheek, he said he “took up wildlife art to cover up his mediocre wildlife photography.”

Although he has worked entirely in pencil, using Derwent graphite pencils, he progressed to adding wax-based colour pencils. He says the learning curve is endless. He first began drawing with pencil at school, and it has become his love, providing better control for detail.

“One has to have an element of obsessive/ compulsiveness to get all the detail in wildlife drawing,” he laughingly commented. “It was a huge step moving to colour. There is so much to learn about pencils.”

Hobbs claims he was never taught to draw wildlife, and has learned by observation so he was not constrained. He is always interested in the work of other wildlife pencil artists, because each drawing is unique in its learning.

He describes how he spent hours learning how to create the luminescence of colour on a hummingbird by watching the movement of individual feathers as the bird flashes its iridescence when excited.

Each season brings its own fascination, and he is discovering his paradise in Lister. He works mainly from photos displayed on his computer to provide better detail. His designing background

influences his picture composition, regarded by some as unconventional.

Recently he has been working with an airbrush technique that opens up new dimensions. The birds almost lift off the page as they look intensely at the observer, and one can almost stroke their feathers. The details are added after the airbrush work with acrylic paint and pencil.

He also uses the airbrush to soften the background to his animals or birds in the same way a photographer uses his focal length to blur the background in a photo.

Hobbs is also involved in the creation of marketing material to facilitate good communication and a sense of community between businesses and new employees.

Throughout the world there is a low working population and it is essential to import workers and increase immigration. It is vital to help those people moving from another country or another part of this vast land to adjust smoothly to the culture and ways of living in their new home. This factor is important to creating safety and harmony for new

families facing different language, customs, food, traditions, social behaviour and climate. It can be difficult, even for a Canadian moving across his own country, to settle in a community where the way of life may be totally different.

Employers too need to recognize and help new immigrants or migrants how to fit in socially and as workers.

This exciting project will necessarily involve a lot of visual information to make ideas and concepts easy to understand. Artistic and design skills are an essential ingredient to its success.

Chiefs finish season at peewee championships

goalie for the extra manpower, and with 13 seconds left in the game, Shayne Walker found the net from the other end of the ice for an empty net goal. Creston won the game 5-2.

After round robin play, the Chiefs found themselves in a four-way tie with Burnaby Winter Club, Kamloops and Castlegar, and they were one goal from making the final four.

The Chiefs ended the season as a solid team with great teamwork skills thanks to their strong coaching staff of Jamie Porter, Dale Jellis, Ed Gudjonson and Larry Rast.

CRESTON VALLEY MINOR HOCKEY ASSOCIATION

Creston was host to the BC Hockey provincial Peewee Tier 3 championships from March 17-22.

The Creston Chiefs played the first game of the tournament on March 17 against Dawson Creek. Creston played a very defensive game. With a strong defensive line and quick goaltending by James Porter Jr., the Chiefs held off Dawson Creek and lost 2-0.

The Chiefs’ second game, against the Quesnel Thunder, came after a colourful opening ceremony in front of a large crowd on the evening of March 17. A very back-and-forth game kept fans guessing as to the outcome of this evenly matched game. Quesnel scored the lone goal of the game five minutes into the second period. With many shots on goal, Creston was unable to get past Quesnel’s formidable goalie.

On the evening of March 18, the Chiefs faced Burnaby Winter Club.

Burnaby found the goal three times in the first period and once in the second before Creston achieved their lone goal with 41 seconds left in the second period. Once again, Porter was a force, facing 51 shots on goal in this 5-1 loss.

The last game of the day on the third day saw Creston versus the Whitehorse Mustangs, another evenly matched game that had many shots on goal but few getting past the goalies. Whitehorse started the scoring with less than two

After winning seven straight games, the Dawson Creek Canucks won the BC Hockey Peewee Tier 3 championships held last week at the John Bucyk Arena.

The second period had two more goals added by the Chiefs.

Brayden Jellis scored an unassisted goal at 14:07, and Ty Gudjonson and Matthew Hills sent the puck to Kale Plotnikoff to score with 9:36 left in the second period. Castlegar pulled their

Walter Pohl

April 19, 1930 ~ March 19, 2013

Walter Pohl was called to be with the Lord on March 19, 2013 surrounded by his loving family at the Kootenay-Boundary Regional Hospital, at the age of 82 years, after a short illness.

Walter was born near Leduc, Alberta on April 19, 1930 to Olga and Adolph Pohl, the eighth of seventeen siblings. Walter received his education in a country school near Leduc, AB. He moved to Creston in 1955 and married Helga Bleise in 1958 and together they had four children. Walter married MaryAnn Robinson in 1980 and spent 32 years together until her passing in 2012. Walter was an active member of the Erickson Evangelical Covenant Church, which he assisted in the construction of and many woodworking projects, as he was a master carpenter. Walter was employed at Wynndel Box and Lumber for 33 years. In his retirement he enjoyed woodworking, Àshing, hunting and all outdoor recreational activities.

He was predeceased by his parents, Olga and Adolf Pohl, Helga Bleise-Pohl, Maryanne Pohl; brothers Edward, Wilhelm, Herman, Heinrich and Paul; sisters Freida Vogel, Doreen Pohl and Florence Pohl.

Walter will be dearly missed by son Gordon (Vicki) Pohl; daughters Barbara (Roy) Palmer, Bonalin (Ed) Ksiezopolski and Karen (Robert) Katzenberger; 20 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters Elsie Wissman, Robert (Jean) Pohl, Ida (Paul) Shellert, Selma Kalis, Daniel (Anne) Pohl, Dennis (Carolyn) Pohl, David (Kathy) Pohl and John (Ruth) Pohl.

We have lost and Heaven has gained the most wonderful dad, grandfather and great-grandfather this world contained. There’s just one thing makes us glad, God chose you to be our dad, grandfather and greatgrandfather.

The Celebration of Life Funeral Service was held on Saturday March 23, 2013 at 2:00 pm at Erickson Evangelical Covenant Church, with Pastor Tom Greentree ofÀciating.

It is with deep sorrow that the family of Gerry Legare announces his passing on March 21, 2013 in Cranbrook, British Columbia, at 73 years of age.

Gerry is survived by his loving wife Lavonne; daughter Michelle; brothers Edwin, Bob and Eugene; sisters Maureen, Elsie, Rosalind, Frieda and Caroline.

He will be sadly missed by many relatives and friends.

It’s a measure of Peter Duryea’s worth that appearing in one of the most popular shows in television history wasn’t his most noteworthy accomplishment.

To most of the world, Duryea was best known for a role in the pilot episode of the original Star Trek series. But on Kootenay Lake, he was a revered East Shore elder and environmentalist who fought against clearcut logging and started a now-thriving nature retreat.

Duryea, who was also a writer, director, tree planter, cook, boat guide and naturalist, died at home Sunday at 73 after a long illness.

“He was a visionary — one of the most amazing I’ve ever met,” says Susan Hulland, who like Duryea, came to the area in the 1970s. “He always insisted on figuring out a good way to do things. I can remember hearing from him over and over again: ‘Is there a better way?’ He was always looking for win-win scenarios, even during down and dirty environmental squabbles.”

One of those disputes led to the creation of the non-profit Guiding Hands Recreation Society and Tipi Camp. In a memoir published last July in the

East Shore Mainstreet, Duryea recalled that in the mid-1980s the community was struggling against clearcut logging. They established the Stop Clearcut campaign, famous for its ubiquitous green stop signs.

News that 22 clearcuts were planned for the Pilot Peninsula set off “a wave of resistance”

along the East Shore, Duryea wrote. “The idea grew that maybe we could show that using the land for conservation and educational purposes could lead to a sustainable industry of outdoor recreation.”

In 1988, Alice Bruce offered her land at Cortiannas Bay, where the Tipi Camp was established to

inspire young and old to love and live in nature. It took eight years before the camp could afford to hire five seasonal workers, and Duryea continued to nurture it until it became self-sustaining.

He chalked up his tenacity to obsessive-compulsive disorder: “I can find no other explanation for my unswerving devotion to

the cause. I guess the tipi camp was meant to be.”

Born in Los Angeles in 1939, Duryea followed in his father’s footsteps. Dan Duryea was a TV actor with many roles to his credit, and the two appeared together in two western films and an episode of Daniel Boone.

However, he hadn’t intended on it: He was majoring in math and physics at Amherst College in Massachusetts before someone asked him to appear in a play and he discovered he loved it. He worked in theatre in Houston and New York and then moved to Hollywood.

Duryea’s filmography over nine years included six movies and 30 television roles, including appearances in Dr. Kildare, Dragnet and Bewitched.

In November 1964, he was cast as Lt. Jose Tyler, navigator of the USS Enterprise, in Star Trek’s pilot episode, “The Cage”.

“It reminded me of a western, but set in the future and it was very interesting,” Duryea told the Nelson Daily News in 2001. “I was among the other many, many people who auditioned. I was really happy to be part of it and took the job really seriously. I can remember long talks with the director, Robert Butler, how to do the part.”

Duryea From page 26 Had NBC executives picked up the series based on that episode, Duryea would have had a regular role. However, they rejected it and the pilot never aired in its original form. Later, a second pilot was approved with an entirely different cast, except Leonard Nimoy as Spock.

But Duryea didn’t express regret at what might have been. Feeling drained by the pace and competitiveness of his lifestyle, he moved his family to Canada in 1973.

“I really needed more in my life than just what I could see coming from that career,” he said. “I need heart and I needed a community.”

He went first to Saltspring and Cortes islands before arriving in the Kootenays, where “the land and the setting made me feel like I’d come home.”

In Gray Creek, Duryea put his stage skills to work in new ways.

He founded the Kootenay Lake Players, a children’s theatre collective that in three years produced nine original plays. The volunteer cast and crew created costumes, props and sets and

staged their works in the Gray Creek Hall.

“Having come from Hollywood, this was a delightful change for me,” Duryea said.

But he did eventually revisit his most famous role in 2005, attending his first Star Trek convention in Las Vegas, where he was overwhelmed.

“It was the total antithesis of my life here,” he said. “I’m deep in nature, working with educational stuff and that’s totally glitz and gambling. … It couldn’t be farther apart.”

During Gray Creek’s 2008 centennial, Duryea was presented with a community legacy award, recognizing his efforts to “protect natural areas and teach young people how to love and live with nature.”

He entrusted his personal files with the Gray Creek Historical Society, including plays, Hollywood memorabilia and community films.

Duryea is survived by his longtime partner Janice Bryan, daughter Star, and a brother, talent agent Richard Duryea. A private family service is planned for Thursday with burial in the Gray Creek cemetery.

National Film Board doc at library examines prostitution in Edmonton

The Creston and District Public Library’s National Film Board Film Club feature for April is the cinema vérité film, Who Cares, by Gemini Awardwinning director Rosie Dransfeld. In this filmed-in-Edmonton documentary, Dransfeld captures the gritty and dangerous world of sex trade workers facing addiction and violence in the neighbourhood where she lives.

Cameras follow three women — Shelley, Courtney and Nancy — all caught up in the cycle of addiction, violence and prostitution, over a three month period during the summer of 2011 in Edmonton’s inner city. Courtney struggles to stay clean, Shelly takes care of everyone but herself when she’s not on crystal meth, and Nancy explains her bruises away as accidents.

Dransfeld also accompanies Project Kare investigators on ride-alongs as they collect voluntary DNA samples from

prostitutes for future postmortem identification. Originally established in 2003 to look into cases of missing and murdered sex-trade workers, the Kare task force now focuses on gathering the samples for an evergrowing database that would help investigators should the women disappear or be killed.

Who Cares is unflinching and can be difficult to watch but has beautiful moments. Dransfeld views the women with a sympathetic eye. Often drug-addicted and poverty-stricken, she says sex trade workers are the most vulnerable members of society, and the most judged.

While johns get off with a day of “john school” as punishment, prostitutes are often hit with jail time and heavy fines.

Dransfeld’s award-winning body of work includes Broke, about an Edmonton pawnshop, which won a Gemini award in 2010 for best social-political documentary. And in 2008, The Dog Walker, her film about a brain-injured man’s journey of

healing through walking dogs, earned her two Alberta Film and Television Awards, for best documentary over 30 minutes and best non-fiction director.

Who Cares will be preceded by the animated short, Paula.

Inspired by a true story in the news, this film paints a disturbing expressionistic portrait of a working-class neighbourhood that revolves around the relationship between a prostitute and a young child.
