The president’s message

I

t seemed as though winter went nt on longer than usual this time, so I’m happy that spring is finally upon us. Now it’s time to get outdoors for walks, bike riding, a bit of gardening, ing, and maybe some cleanup that’s been neglected. We’re doing some of that in the downtown core too.

City of Courtenay gardeners are busily cleaning up the downtown gardens, the deciduous trees are being shaped, and new lighting is being installed on them that will greatly enhance downtown ambience with warm twinkly lights that the BIA has purchased.

Shop-keepers are sweeping the corners in front of their businesses to keep them neat looking. To help even more with improving the streetscape, the Downtown Courtenay BIA is proud to launch a Façade Improvement Program.

This is a grant program for BIA members and property owners to help them with the costs of fixing up the exterior of

When faced with improving facilities at Lewis Park or building a new centre, the city knew there was only one choice. “We knew we wanted to take what we have and build on that,” explains Wiwchar. “We didn’t want to leave downtown. We want to compliment what we have with two beautiful parks downtown that provide opportunity for outdoor activities. We’ve tried to integrate our inside facilities to build around that.”

The DCBIA and the City of Courtenay are working together to install new lighting on downtown trees. Warm-white LED fairy lights will replace current lighting, providing more coverage on the deciduous trees that line downtown streets.

“This is a substantial investment in the lighting and will make quite a difference to downtown,” says Kim Stubblefield, Executive Director of the DCBIA. “The intention of the lighting is to cover the trees as completely as possible, to create a beautiful downtown ambience.”

Downtown Courtenay is an all-season destination, but it is especially refreshing to walk the streets and poke through the shops as flowerbeds come to life on every block. City staff work hard throughout the spring and summer, planting perennials, pruning trees and maintaining the city’s landscape.

By late May, over 35,000 flowers line Cliffe Ave, as volunteers join together in a spirit of community to continue a 45 year tradition of planting a mile of flowers to welcome visitors into the city.

This tradition is extended into the downtown core where hanging baskets and flowerbeds provide shoppers a refreshing break from the hustle and bustle.

“The downtown is very unique,” Wiwchar exclaims.

The Elks continues to be committed to looking out for one another through community service. Courtenay Elks members work diligently to raise funds for organizations such as BC Family Hearing Resource Centre and

the BC Children’s Camp society.

They sponsor high school bursaries, minor sports, the food bank and other charitable projects.

Downtown barbershop rich in history and tradition

S

When asked what he likes best about the Hub, seven-year old Jack Hill grins, “Leo’s nice, and he lets me choose a lollipop!”

“I wanted to start a tradition with the boys, a familiar place to build community,” explains Jack’s mom, Skye Hill.

It’s no wonder the boys bo love visiting The Hub Hu Barber shop. It is filled fill d with an eclectic assortment of memorabilia that would fascinate young boys and adults alike.

The walls are covered in photos that pay tribute to the shop’s early connection to the swing bands that once rocked the Native Sons Hall. “Some of the early barbers in the 40’s and 50’s were real musicians,” reminisces Leo when asked about the vinyl records and musical instruments on display.

There are also vintage photos of bar-

bers hard at work. “Barbers understand short hair but they can cut any style” explains Juffermans as he points to a photo on the shop’s back wall. “There’s a barber right there cutting old George Harrison’s hair with scissors over a comb.

Stepping in to The Hub is a step back I want- into the past. Vintage barber poles hang ed to start from the wall. This was a remnant from Bob’s Barbershop, the first barbershop Juffermans purchased when he moved to the Comox Valley years ago. “They don’t make stuff like this anymore!” he exclaims.

The traditional Paidar barber chairs that welcome customers are pieces of art. If these chairs could talk, they would share a long history of Comox Valley residents. “Some of the eclectic stuff in here just kind of shows up,” says Juffermans, “but the chairs have been in the Comox Valley since the 1930’s.”

“It’s a cheaper hair cut for the guy that doesn’t have a lot of hair,” Jufferman’s explains with a chuckle. “It’s a prairie haircut — lots of wide opened spaces.”

When Fred Kirby moved to the Comox Valley from Vancouver in late 2012, he felt instantly at home at the Hub. “This place was so similar to my Vancouver barbershop that I walked in and felt like I belonged,” says Kirby, who had been working as a barber in Vancouver since the seventies and moved to the Valley in semi-retirement.

Both Juffermans and Kirby enjoy the comradery of barbering. Customers

become long time friends as they shoot the breeze, talk about music, restoring cars and building hot rods.

“A lot of guys come in and talk cars,” says Juffermans. “They’ll be working on something and we can relate to that.”

There is a strong sense of community within the small shop as the barbers build rapport with customers of all ages.

“If a customer likes a barber he’ll stay with you forever,” says Kirby, “and a barber will most often stay in one shop for most of his career.”

“You befriend a lot of people,” says Juffermans, “and you get to the point when you look forward to your customers coming in because they are your friends.”

ne can never have enough socks!” exclaims Dumbledoor in the famous Harry Potter series, but you don’t need to be a wizard to appreciate the style and utility of a good pair of socks.

Whether you are an athlete looking for quality socks to spice up your team’s by uniform or a fashJennifer ionista with an eye Cox for design you will definitely want to visit Sock Soiree (located across from the Sid Williams Theatre just down from Mudsharks on Cliffe Ave.) Sunday Dennis and Jason McMahon opened their downtown location on December 8, 2012, but their business is not completely new to the community. Before opening their doors, the entrepreneurial couple operated as a home-based business, selling

socks at festivals and markets, and holding sock soirees at various locations on Quadra Island and in the Comox Valley.

“During this time, Sunday and I would often talk about how cool it would be to have a sock shop and customers would ask, ‘where’s your store?’ ” explains McMahon. “We decided it was time, and our dream came true!”

But their dreams don’t stop there. Plans are in the works to launch a line of west coast themed socks designed in the Comox Valley and produced in Canada. Dennis and McMahon have been busy working on their design and sourcing a manufacturer with hopes to unveil their product in the coming months.

One of their top-selling brands is Sweet Marcel, a designer that prides itself in being globally inspired. They also have a sense of humour. Their men’s line is called Stinky Marcel (sorry guys!)

“Sweet Marcel sourced a mill in Turkey that employs women in an area where jobs are not readily available,” explains McMahon. Customers purchasing these stylish socks will find their conscience just as comfortable as their toes.

Another favourite brand is QT Feet. These brightly coloured socks are made from regenerated cotton “When we were starting our business this was the first one we chose,” says McMahon.

“It is probably our biggest selling sock. They last forever and people love them!”

QT Feet also has an infant line, which Dennis says is very popular. “People keep coming back for more, thankful to find a sock that stays on their baby’s feet.” The bright colours and soft texture of the sock make them both fun and comfortable.

In addition to monthly open mikes to raise money for charity, Sock Soiree will be hosting fun events throughout the year. Customers who want to learn how to tye-dye their thigh-high will be able to purchase a white pair of socks and learn how to tye-dye their socks in fun, informative workshops.

“We already have so many return customers which we are very happy about,” Dennis says, explaining that she wants the

store to be more than just a retail space.

Sock Soiree is a family-run business with three generations working together to ensure success. Dennis’s daughter was in helping out over Christmas and her mother comes over from Quadra Island to help manage the store when she goes on vacation.

As a small business owner she knows firsthand the importance of finding a work-family balance and she is enjoying the strong sense of community that is building in the downtown core.

discovery at the Courtenay and District Museum

he adventure begins at the museum where Pat Trask, Curator of Natural History and Science takes participants on an exciting fossil by tour, revealing the Jennifer wonders of ancient Cox life and sharing some of the famous discoveries that have taken place in the Comox Valley.

In the exhibit galleries, participants see actual specimens and reconstructed casts of the Elasmosaur and Mosasaur. The remains of these fascinating marine reptiles were found along the shale banks of the Puntledge River, along with vertebrate and invertebrate fossils that lived 80 million years ago.

With curiosity piqued, the tour moves outdoors to the fossil site, which is a short drive from the museum. This is where the fun begins as Trask explains the site history and demonstrates collection techniques before handing out hammers, chisels and goggles to participants excited to find a fossil of their own. This is a great activity for tourists, families and school groups.

“Last year we had 6500 school children come in during the school year,” says Deborah Griffiths, Executive Director of the museum.

“Science classes and natural history classes are drawn to our unique fossil material and excellent children’s programs.”

Visitors come to the museum from all around the world to view marine fossil exhibits and visit the fossil site where discover-

ies of ancient life have been featured on television documentaries such as Discovery Channel and Knowledge Network.

The unearthing of the Elasmosaur put the Comox Valley on the map, drawing tourists and palaeontologists to the area. An amateur fossil hunter exploring the banks of the Puntledge River with his daughter found the impressive marine reptile in 1988. Thanks to the efforts of the Courtenay and District Museum

– Deborah Griffiths this location was quickly declared a provincial heritage site. A dedicated group of staff and volunteers worked diligently to excavate the area. The Elasmosaur was reconstructed and greets museum visitors with its toothy smile.

“Because of that find, all the scientists and amateur fossil collectors in the province began working together,” explains Trask.

“The Elasmosaur was the catalyst to bring these groups together to learn from each other.” Trask and fellow palaeontologists continue to work together in the Vancouver Island Paleontological Society, fostering public awareness around fossil collecting. “It’s important for

us to lobby government to establish rules around fossil collection, making it illegal to sell fossils because this is part of our natural heritage.”

“Every find that we have has taken years to research and cast,” says Griffiths. “The Elasmosaur took five years from the ground to the cast.”

As individuals continue to search the area, other large, extinct marine reptiles, such as the Mosasaur, have been discovered.

Trask recalls when the new highway was being built, the jaws of a Mosasaur (likely a Tylosaurus), were discovered by museum board member, Rick Ross. “The block was moved from its original position so we don’t know where it was originally. It remains buried beneath the highway, somewhere along the Dove Creek intersection,” says Trask, explaining that because it is only the jaws and a few other pieces it is not enough to reconstruct a model.

The museum is full of interesting discoveries that will thrill amateur paleontologists and historians alike. If you haven’t visited the museum recently, it underwent some exciting changes in the fall of 2012 with a reinvigoration of the display area and revamping of the museum website.

The website, http://www. courtenaymuseum.ca, hosts an impressive collection of videos and articles that act as a springboard for further discovery. The site is a popular resource that draws visitors to the Comox Valley. “They are knowledgeable tourists,” says

Within the museum there is a great selection of fossils as well as reconstructions of ancient marine life. Beautiful murals by Robert Lundquist provide an impressive backdrop to displays that tell the story of Vancouver Island’s rich natural history. The museum is committed to using natural history as an element for growth. “We are really interested in natural history because it’s a platform that everyone can relate to,” explains Griffiths. “That’s why we get so many people on fossil tours, they come from all over the world because they are interested in how things are formed.”

The museum is known for it’s paleontological discoveries but it is rich in history and works closely with schools to host social history and pioneer programs throughout the year, configuring programs to a teacher’s specific needs and developing programs for home-

schoolers.

The museum archives are a treasure trove of local history, photographs and information.

This is a great resource for writers and local historians.

The archives are open to the public Tuesday through Friday but if individuals have specific research needs, archive visits should be booked ahead of time.

There are nominal fees for programs and services but museum admission is by donation, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to travel back in time 80 million years, to imagine the ancient reptiles whose fossilized remains are still being discovered, and to learn about the rich cultural history of our communities earliest settlers.

Railway buffs will want to visit the museum this spring to see a new exhibit profiling railways in the Comox Valley. From Camp to Community shows how the formation of the railway led to industry expansion and the establishment of community.

“We’ve been blown away by the incredible support and encouragement from all aspects of the community” says Elevate Co-Producer Bobby Herron. “That support has

given us the momentum to do it again.” And so, Elevate 2013 is set for June 4-8th in the ‘Heart of Courtenay’.

Elevate was unique in a number of ways and that has certainly been part of its appeal. The event is all down the ll about b t breaking b ki d th barrib i ers between culture producers and culture consumers and bringing audiences, supporters and artists together in their experience of arts and culture.

Instead of closing 5th street or booking a big field somewhere, Elevate is about the nooks and crannies of the community. Instead of big-ticket prices, the event is about total accessibility. Instead of passive viewing and listening, the event is all about finding your own voice and your talents and engaging directly with artists. Instead of escaping

from our day-to-day life, Elevate is about transforming our community into a place where creativity, experimentation and exploration is celebrated every day.

Elevate is also all about partnerships. Organizers have committed themselves to producing an event that provides a vehicle for many arts, culture and community organizations to express themselves as well. Instead of multiple organizations competing for dates and audiences throughout the year, Elevate is dedicated to providing a collaborative forum for ‘elevating’ arts and culture.

“Elevate seems to have really piqued an interest”, says Co-Producer Anna Rambow. “The Comox Valley seems hungry for an event that is a bit more challenging and a bit more welcoming to alternative voices. We’re really committed to making sure that the diverse voices of our community are expressed in our programming. We’re also creating vending and exhibition opportunities for artists who have very ‘nontraditional’ work through the Underground Art Fair.

Many of these artists are not included in more traditional craft fairs.”

Organizers have been using a series of ‘E’ words as guiding inspiration for programming. “At one of our first meetings in late 2011 we came up with the name and a list of words that really represented what we were trying to achieve.” says Co-Producer Kera McHugh. “Explore, Experiment, Entice, Expose, Excite and Evolve are just a few. “Our staff are amazing,” says Willis, crediting her two longest time employees Sarah Harper and Alisha Tinga for much of the café’s success. “When you can keep staff that long, you know they enjoy their job.”

She feels very fortunate that Tinga and Harper take so much pride in their work, “I oversee things but they are the ones that come up with all the ideas,” explains Willis who believes the consistent high service her staff provide makes a huge difference in running a successful business.

“It’s almost like a second home to me,” says Sarah Harper.

Alisha Tinga agrees.

“It’s so nice to be a part of

downtown because everyone downtown is like an extended family. It’s not like a job. I see regular customers everywhere I go.”

Willis is a strong believer in community and as president of Soroptimists International of Courtenay, she works hard to empower women to achieve their goals.

“Our goal as Soroptimists is: educate to lead.” She points to Harper and Tinga, busy serving customers at the café counter. “These girls, they are leaders in this business.

I manage them so that everything stays consistent but I also give them freedom to create. I think that’s a big thing.”

Willis sees a need for younger women to become more involved as Soroptimists. “I think it’s absolutely amazing when you see the kind of projects that Soroptimists are doing around the world, to see what’s going on out there for women,” she says.

“I always look around and say, who can I help?

I am thrilled if I can help one young woman to educate and feel good about herself. That’s the main thing,” says Willis. “I think there is so much opportunity for young women who don’t otherwise have the support behind them!”

Willis is passionate about empowering young women. Her motto as a Soroptomist is “best for women,” because ultimately providing opportunities for young women to succeed leads to a stronger, more vibrant society for all.

nspired by her mother’s commitment to volunteer service, Mackenzie Gartside is not only a successful mortgage broker and one of the Comox Valley’s top 40 under 40, she is also an active fundraiser who believes in the importance of community spirit.

As the parent of a child with typeone diabetes, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is the cause closest to her heart. “A lot of people think it’s not going to happen to them but this experience has taught by me I’m not invincible,” says Jennifer Gartside. “My daughter has Cox had lots of ups and downs.

She is an amazing kid, really well-adjusted and super mature.”

To raise funds and awareness, Gartside sells glow bracelets, at $10 for 100 bracelets. This project is most popular in the fall but she sells them year-round to individuals, school PACS, and other community groups. As warm weather approaches, they provide fun, translucent light at the beaches, festival grounds, and around the campsite. As an extension of this project she organized a successful Halloween house tour in 2012 with plans to make it an annual event.

“I do it because it makes me feel good.” She explains. “I don’t think there are enough people in my age group that volunteer, primarily because with young families they don’t have the time. I like to set an example for my daughter. It really comes down to me feeling like I’ve done something worthwhile.”

This desire to set an example for her daughter is rooted in values that Gartside’s mother instilled in her. “My mom is amazing, she is an investment advisor and when I was growing up she didn’t sit still.” Gartside says proudly.

“She was always volunteering, and since grade 8 she ensured that I was volunteering too.”

Throughout high school, Gartside’s mother would pick her up from school and drive her to the hospital in

Mackenzie Gartside credits her mother for instilling a strong spirit of volunteerism.

Campbell River to volunteer. Gartside has also been an active volunteer on the Sid Williams board, serves as fundraising coordinator for her school’s PAC, on the executive committee of Young Professionals Comox Valley, and still finds time to teach aerobics at the Lewis Centre.

Keeping active and involved in the community is important to Gartside who enjoys attending networking events and is always looking for ways to serve the community. She is also very committed to her work as a mortgage broker.

“Buying a home is an exciting process and through my clients I get to do that over and over again,” she says. “One of our big mantras working in a small community is to treat our clients as best we can.

We work hard to give our clients the best rate, the best terms, anything we can do to accommodate their situation.” This kind of service is the core of Gartside’s success.

She points out proudly that 99% of her clients are referral based and many become close friends.

hanks for Turning Down the Heat Coming together to help others was the premise behind the Turn Down the Heat campaign that took place last February.

This event encouraged British Columbians to turn down the heat and donate warm clothing to those in need. It worked! Over 5,000 sweaters – double the goal of 2,500 – were collected across the province.

Local participating businesses, Beyond’ the Kitchen Door; Rattan Plus Home & Patio; Ski Tak Hut, Sock Soiree; Square 1 Travel; The Potter’s Place; Union Street Grill & Grotto; and Zocalo Café collected 160 items during the week long event.

Donations in the Comox Valley went to AIDS Vancouver Island for use in their Cold Outreach Program.

Dining out for Life On Thursday April 25th, thousands of diners will come together across the island to share a delicious meal and help raise funds in support of AIDS Vancouver Island.

All proceeds remain on Vancouver Island.

Participating restaurants generously donate 25% of their food sales on a single night to raise money for AIDS organizations.

he clock is ticking and the April 30th tax deadline is fast approaching. If you are like many taxpayers you find yourself staring at a daunting stack of papers, rummaging through boxes of receipts, and working desperately to organize your records when you’d rather be outside enjoying the fresh spring air.

Sharon Hadden has a lot to offer Comox Valley business owners. She is new to her accounting office in Downtown Courtenay by but she is not new to Jennifer the business world.

She is proud of her accomplishments growing a small business of three staff to a thriving enterprise with international sales and over 100 employees. The best advice she offers to prospective and current business owners is to be organized. “You don’t need a complicated system, the simpler the better,” she says. “Even one big envelope that you put all your receipts into, and if you want to be more organized; sort out expenses by category.”

want to see receipts and totals that match what you put on your tax return,” Hadden warns.

People might not realize what expenses they can write off. For instance, if the business is homebased, owners can write off a portion of their home expenses. There are also many deductions that people are unaware of, such as tax credits that many don’t realize they are eligible for.

An accountant’s service is slightly more expensive than H&R Block, but depending on your situation it might be worth it.

“The price depends on how much work needs to be done,” explains Hadden. “If you kept your receipts organized it’s going to be a lot cheaper than it will be if you show

up with a jumble of information.”

Keeping all receipts on file also gives you more to write off because an accountant is not going to use any expenses that can’t be proven.

This way, if you do face an audit it won’t be so stressful.

“I understand how important it is to be on time with all your filings because the CRA doesn’t have time to play around,” says Hadden.

“People starting out in business often don’t understand that. They don’t know their deadlines. They don’t know their obligation to employees. They have to do it right or they can get in trouble down the road.”

Knowing what needs to be done, to be organized up front helps small business owners achieve success into the future.

Hadden spends hours researching tax strategies and maintaining up to date knowledge of the tax act.

“I am always happy when I can get money back for people that they weren’t getting before.”

1. Stay organized! Keeping track of receipts throughout the year saves money at tax time.

2. Don’t be late! The CRA is relentless with deadlines and not very forgiving.

3. Keep your business and personal accounts separate! A designated bank account helps small businesses track expenses and income.

There were only two male stylists and we weren’t allowed to ski,” Bigler laughs. “There had been a third stylist but he broke his leg on the slopes.”

He was eager to return to Canada, and began work in a Toronto salon before moving to B.C., where he eventually opened his own high-end micro-shop in Vancouver.

ife is your own art,” says Sandra Viney explaining the philosophy that has made the Atlas Café such a success over the past 18 years. “My art is that I love what I do. There is nothing better than putting a plate of food down in front of someone and knowing that they are being nourished.”

Good food and good people are the heartbeat of by the Atlas. For the first Jennifer ten years after they Cox opened, owners Trent McIntyre and Sandra Viney lived above the restaurant. “This truly was our living room,” says Viney, “and I still feel that way and hope the staff carry that philosophy with them. We want this to be everyone’s living room.

Every occasion is special, each experience has meaning to us and we want this to be a place of warmth, where people feel comfortable.”

Viney has turned over the reigns of managing the restaurant floor to Sean Poole.

Poole has been with the Atlas for two years and has a gift for making customers feel welcome.

“I would be proud to think that there is a culinary destination here for people to come and check out some of the farms, go to the wineries, step in a few of the restaurants and have that big round experience that is more than just golfing and skiing and kayaking,” says Viney. “There is a dynamic local food culture here. When that pride of place comes about, my first heartfelt feeling is towards the way the community has embraced

us, but the real gratitude comes from the staff, past and present, that have worked under the umbrella of Atlas.”

Sourcing local product to encourage eating locally is one way that the Atlas works to stay connected to the community. The original vision for the Atlas when it opened in 1995 was to have fresh, fun food with a global theme.

“We have an international theme with local flavours that has evolved into some beautiful fresh sheets,” explains Viney,

There is also a regular a la carte menu filled with long time favourites, and I feel like a bit of an expert on this menu because the Atlas has been my favourite restaurant since it opened 18 years ago.

When we left the Comox Valley for university and dreams of a big city, the Atlas was where we returned to catch up with old friends and reconnect with our home community. It is where we have gone to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries. It is where my

running club meets for breakfast and where my book club gathers when we want a night out on the town. Our realtor bought us a gift certificate to the Atlas when we bought our first house, and it is always where we take outof-town guests when we want to show off the great flavours of the Comox Valley.

Like most people I have a few tried and true favourites that I almost always order; the Mediterranean platter is a full serving of spanakopita, hummus, tzatziki, greek salad & grilled pita. This is what I had when I brought some out-of-town friends to the Atlas a few weeks ago.

My other favourite is the Vegan plate, which is a delicious combination of black beans, firecracker rice, citrus mixed greens, salsa, avocado and corn chips. It is extremely flavourful and I enjoy it because it always leaves me feeling nourished and healthy.

But it’s been a long time since James and I have been out on a date and we both agreed ahead of time that we would venture out and order something we hadn’t tried before.

Our waitress, Kristen Shultz was a delight and I had to ask her what it was that made the Atlas special to her. “When I moved back to the Valley this is the first place I came back to,” she explained. “I really wanted that community feeling, and the food’s incredible! It makes my job so easy!”

The food truly is delicious.

I had to ask about the balsamic vinegar drizzled decoratively on our plate because it had such a deep rich flavour. She explained that it is a balsamic vinegar reduction. The chef simmers it slowly until it is reduced into a thick, flavourful syrup- a trick I am going to have to try at home.

I ordered a glass of Beaufort Meritage red wine. I am partial to the local winery not just because the wine is handcrafted right here in the Comox Valley but also because their wines have consistent character and depth.

For my main entrée I ordered the cumin crusted wild sockeye salmon surrounded in carrot butter sauce and topped with avocado mash. The sauce is made with freshly pressed carrot juice and was a perfect compliment to my meal. The spicy sweet aroma of the cumin crust added a dynamic flavour to my salmon, which was cooked to perfection.

James ordered the Pork Schnitzel Cordon Bleu, a delicious choice topped with Tannadice Farms’ ham and Natural Pastures cracked pepper verdelait cheese. He told me that he would definitely be ordering it again, and in fact he was still raving about it the next day.

Both our meals included an assortment of wholesome roasted vegetables; bok choy, golden beets, heritage carrots and garlic asiago cheese mashed potatoes.

It’s not very often that we get an evening out with just the two of us so we wanted to stretch our evening out as long as possible.

We were both more than satisfied from dinner but couldn’t resist desert when we saw they were serving vanilla bean crème brûlée.

It was a rich and creamy dessert, paired nicely with a steaming mug of coffee and leaving us feeling nourished and relaxed, reminding us that date night needs to happen more often.
