A Crawford Bay man is appealing his 2½ year jail sentence for an all-terrain vehicle crash north of Riondel that claimed his friend’s life.

Cory Medhurst was convicted last December in Creston Provincial Court of driving with a blood alcohol reading over .08 and criminal negligence causing the death of Brandon Salviulo, 20.

Judge Grant Sheard gave Medhurst 24 months on the first charge and 30 months on the second, to be served concurrently, and also banned him for driving for three years.

California Man Falls Head First Into Tree Well

A fatal skiing accident north of Trout Lake has claimed the life of a 68-yearold California man.

On Thursday at 1:48 p.m. the Great Northern Cat Skiing company contacted Nakusp RCMP after a skier fell head first into a tree well.

A body found in Cottonwood Creek Saturday morning was that of a male in his late 20s, according to the Nelson Police Department.

Officers have notified the family of the deceased, though a name has yet to be released publicly.

The young man had recently moved to Nelson from another community in the area and police say he was Caucasian and found wearing a blue sports jersey with the number 12 on the front.

Although there are no signs of foul play, it has not been ruled out. Nelson police and the BC Coroners Service are continuing the investigation.

Officials were informed of the body — which was in the creek near where it enters Kootenay Lake by the Nelson Transfer Station — on Saturday at 9 a.m.

Liberals target Michelle Mungall in NDP ‘slush’ fund controversy KIRSTEN HILDEBRAND Nelson Star Reporter

The Liberal party is targeting Nelson-Creston MLA Michelle Mungall as they accuse the NDP of diverting local constituency dollars into what they call a central partisan slush fund.

“It is not a slush fund,” says Mungall. “That is a liberal spin word. It’s an accrual account.”

The Liberals are referring to an Auditor General report saying the NDP participated in a scheme that saw over $460,000 intended to serve local constituents throughout the province funneled into a central partisan fund. Legislature rules specifically prohibit the use of constituency funds for political use.

The report from the Auditor General found, “funds accruing to this account were being used for partisan purposes and not for goods or services consistent with the original purpose of the constituency office.”

East Kootenay MLA Bill Bennett finds this concerning because local constituency offices have heavy workloads

offering vital services to their communities. Typical casework involves helping local constituents with Medical Service Plan issues, Pharmacare, welfare eligibility and access to other provincial services.

“Less money in NDP constituency offices means less help for those in the community who need it,” says Bennett. “This was money meant to help constituents and it was taken away. This wasn’t a simple mistake — it was a well organized plot and they only stopped when they got caught.”

Mungall explains all MLAs put $200 per month into this account to pay for multicultural outreach activities in constituencies throughout the province that no one office could afford on their own. The funds were used for translations and advocating on behalf of constituents with English as a second language, for example. The legislative controller approved and managed this account.

“It was not secret. It was not hidden. It was transparently on the books under the legislative controllers office,”

she says. “As soon as the Auditor General said to the legislative controller that this type of accounting practice is a problem, we discontinued it immediately.”

Mungall is comfortable with her participation in this fund saying that rules and regulations were followed.

“We used that money for very specific activities, none of which were partisan — none. I don’t know why the Auditor General chose that word,” she says.

Mungall says these accusations come at a time when the Liberals are desperately trying to divert people’s attention from their own use of public employees to do

partisan work. Earlier this month, the premier’s office received criticism for its use of civil servants in a multicultural outreach plan aimed at boosting Liberal support.

“They’re desperate and attempting to divert people’s attention from what they did that was actually breaking the rules, which is having public servants do partisan work,” she says. “They’re trying to say ‘they did it too but we didn’t.’”

Local Liberal candidate Greg Garbula doesn’t think it’s enough that Mungall says her party has stopped diverting funds.

“Is the party going to pay back to the community the money that was redirected or skimmed from the operating budget of the local offices?” he asks.

He also questions the balance of provincial coverage of the two issues.

“How does a story about the use of public employees for ethnic outreach garner two weeks of constant exposure when the blatant use of public funds gets nothing more than an eight second sound bite?” he asks.

Regional District Sets Out Budget Plan

The Regional District of Central Kootenay is expected to increase its staffing by a handful of positions once it signs off on its 2013 budget this week.

The financial plan, which unanimously received three readings from the board Thursday, calls for six new jobs that will cost up to a combined $442,000, including salary, benefits, software and office set-up. The additions are based in part on recommendations from a consultant’s review of the organization.

The positions include a project manager, budget manager, accounts clerk, human resources technician, half-time parks planner and half-time sustainability coordinator.

Chief financial officer Grant Roeland said last week the positions haven’t yet been posted and existing staff will likely fill some of them. The additions also hinge on reorganization in senior management.

Roeland is leaving to take the same position with the neighbouring Regional District of Kootenay Boundary.

His replacement hasn’t been named, but Rod De Leeuw is filling in as finance manager in the interim.

Corporate officer Dawn Attorp is also leaving in June and will be replaced by deputy corporate officer Anitra Winje. The shuffles come a few months after Brian Carruthers took over as chief administrator from the retiring

Roeland anticipates the new budget manager won’t be hired until a decision is made on his now vacant position, but the new accounting clerk will help.

“The volume of our invoices has grown 20 per cent over the past three years. We can’t keep up,” he said.

The full-time human resources technician will also deal with a growing backlog.

“We currently have in excess of 300 full-time positions [including recreation centres] and only one dedicated HR position,” Roeland said. “If you look at any industry, you’ll probably see that we’re very short by comparison.”

He explained the project manager position was approved in 2012, but hiring was put off until this year.

It will be paid primarily through the regional district’s waste management and water functions.

“That’s where our large projects are, specifically the transfer station,” Roeland said, referring to the impending move of the Nelson transfer station from the waterfront to a site a few kilometres west of town.

Roeland said the part-time sustainability and parks positions will probably be filled by moving around existing staff. Bylaw enforcement will also be beefed up with an additional full-time officer.

He said a corporate review completed last September by consultant Gord McIntosh identified “weak points” in the organization, “where we aren’t necessarily succeeding in meeting our obligations.”

Afterward, Carruthers, the chief administrator, did his own review to verify whether the staffing increases were justified.

“This is pretty well what [he determined],” Roeland said. “Were there more on the list? Absolutely, but this is the core. It’s the level the board felt was acceptable.”

One position considered but not included in this year’s budget was a deputy regional fire chief. It will be looked at again next year.

Finding room for the new hires is a challenge: the budget includes money for a space planner to reconfigure the Nelson head office.

SEEKING SAVINGS Another major hit comes from the rollout of new ac-

counting software at a cost of $1.2 million, spread over last year and this year’s budgets. The largest component is expected to be operational as of January 1.

Nelson Mayor John Dooley supported the budget, although he said it represented “quite a shift,” adding they are making “substantial” investments on the promise it will result in cost savings later on.

Dooley said the onus is now on the board to ensure those savings materialize.

“We have a substantial increase in staff and costs. I hope our barometers show efficiencies, otherwise we’re staring down the barrel.”

Chair John Kettle said a first quarterly report is due next week, but he’s comfortable with the staffing increases as presented.

“We probably should have been smarter in the past and added some of these positions,” he said. “But we didn’t.

We hedged our bets and said ‘Do we want to spend this?’

We didn’t and should have.”

Kettle said saving money through hiring freezes “may be good politics but it’s bad government. I’m comfortable we’re doing the right thing now.”

He told the board the overall budget increase of 1.14 per cent compared to 2012 is “well within the guidelines of good management.”

The budget is valued at $58.7 million, up from $58 million last year. Its unanimous approval marked the third year in a row that it’s been passed without dissent.

Final adoption is expected Thursday.

The regional district’s 2013 budget contains winners and losers, the organization’s outgoing chief financial officer admits.

Grant Roeland, whose last day was Friday, said while the cost of joint services has gone down, individual services and areas may pay more. Nelson is among the places taking a hit.

“Nelson is experiencing a significant increase but they’re having significant development,” he said. “The recreation centre is going through a lot of rehabilitation and they’re embarking on

transfer station expenditures.”

Nelson Chamber of Commerce boss Tom Thomson said he’d like to see the City of Nelson and regional district look closely at sharing services. (The City is now contracting the regional district for building inspection as needed.)

“You always want to look for synergies between the two,” he said. “Are there ways to make administration smoother? Ways to make it more efficient for people doing business with them? If they’re looking for more space, how about the [city-owned] white building?

That would make it even easier for those departments to collaborate.”

The budget received three readings

last week following a series of public meetings around the region that chair John Kettle said were sparsely attended, although more people showed up than in years past. The prevailing message he heard was that “people overall are taxed out.”

“They want good service but aren’t going to ask for the Cadillac. They want basic service and that’s what we should be able to provide,” he said.

The regional district has more than 200 services, including building inspection, bylaw enforcement, fire protection, animal and insect control, recreation centres, parks, transit and water systems.

ast week the Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation gathered its most loyal supporters at the Hume Hotel for a special night. The annual Caring Companies Dinner included a diverse mix of business people and local organizations. It provided a perfect glimpse into why the Foundation is such a success.

Health care in British Columbia has changed significantly over the years. Governments argue the cost of the system has become unaffordable. In an attempt to make it sustainable for future generations, our leaders say the bottom line can’t be ignored and cash isn’t endless. With that shift has come plenty of concern from industry watchers who keep a close eye on service levels.

In an age when government is ignoring communities with their hands out, it’s organizations like the Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation that ensure we have the upper hand when it comes to local health care.

The CT scanner was an epic effort that saw our community raise more than a million dollars. But the Foundation’s great work prior and post CT scanner is just as impressive.

Last year’s two major campaigns — the Breath of Life and Light Up the Hospital — raised $120,000. The equipment purchased went towards enhancing surgical services which are slowly creeping their way back into the Nelson facility. Without the Foundation, it’s very likely the province would ignore the equipment requests the community donations were able to satisfy.

From big car dealerships to small accounting firms, there are many local businesses that form a base of support. Area service clubs and ladies auxiliaries are always generous. Even local government gets into the mix.

It all adds up to a better hospital. And there is a great deal of pride that goes into doing it ourselves and setting our own agenda for the local hospital.

Though Kootenay Lake Hospital is often a place of great pain and suffering, Foundation chairperson Pat Dooley said it best at last week’s dinner: “It’s an awesome place.”

It’s all about getting along

t’s Thursday, March 21 and I’m looking out my window at the latest snowfall, of course immediately occurring just after the street sweeper has cleaned up the sand.

March is a tricky month, the month trying to be spring and not quite making it. It reminds me of a toddler taking her first steps. It is also the month of dog poop season — you know, the time of year when the snow melts and dog owners who don’t pick up are outed.

I’m preparing for a community meeting this evening with the province on the Columbia River Treaty, so I’ve set my PVR to record the documentary Dog Dazed on CBC. I’ve been anticipating this show because I think it may lend some further insights to the community conversation about urban dogs and perhaps speak to how, by becoming better pet owners, people also become better neighbours.

I also think this show will add yet another spark to this community conversation.

Initially, I hadn’t intended to write about dogs because the proposition about whether or not we allow “trained and restrained” dogs in the few blocks of the downtown core seemed to be over.

That hasn’t been the case.

I’ve read letters and emails pro and con and had many conversations with people about what

would seem to be a small issue but really isn’t.

What we think are minor problems are often lightning rods that take us into underlying issues needing to be aired. And a good example is the dog bylaw.

The whole issue of dogs is about training owners and about us supporting each other to be good neighbours.

As liaison to the business community, I regularly meet with owners to hear about their concerns and successes. It’s been a tough couple of years for our business community with the economic downturn and the rapidly shifting shopping habits of customers. Internet shopping, a decline in visitors and empty downtown spaces are some of the challenges facing our small community and it’s only recently that it’s turning around.

Discussions about how to make our downtown welcoming, inviting and friendly are also happening with the Downtown Waterfront Committee.

We talk about the next transformation coming to Nelson, about how we continue to respect and preserve our heritage, but

also boldly revitalize it and keep the downtown the busy, bustling hub of activity, counterculture and conservatism that everyone loves and wants to be a part of.

What makes the downtown work so well is the mix of community and business pulling together to make it all happen.

That’s part of why the discussion to revisit an old bylaw that doesn’t work all that well came about. And when I spoke to bylaw officers, business owners and community members, there seemed to be enough support to give it a try.

The whole issue of dogs is about training owners and about us supporting each other to be good neighbours. That means talking to each other and working things out. The business community is ready to have some fun experimenting with change and bylaw officers are ready too, because it just doesn’t make sense to put more money into hiring more people to enforce a bylaw that is largely unenforceable.

I have faith in the people who live here because I’ve seen and heard stories of people doing the right thing. For every piece of evidence you see of people not picking up, there are those who do and they make the extra effort to do more. In my neighbourhood, I’ve seen people in Lions Park cleaning up after their own dog and

picking up after others. It’s all part of spring cleaning.

I just heard about a couple doing the same duty on the dog walk because as they said, “I want to be part of the solution.”

So you ask, what about those that aren’t responsible? Greg Stacey stopped me the other day. He and (former city councillor) Marg just returned from Venice. He said dogs are in evidence everywhere, even in world heritage sites. The spaces are very clean and for those that don’t clean up there are penalties in the hundreds of euros. It all seems to work for them because they talk to each other and enforce when necessary.

I’m thinking, if Rossland is ready to give it a try, why not us? Let’s keep an eye on them over the next few months to see how it goes and learn from their experience.

This summer is fast approaching — although it doesn’t seem evident today — and the business community is going to be putting its best foot forward despite the bylaw.

This conversation will continue and I think we will come to a solution because in the big scheme of things, this is a very small problem to solve and come on, you have to be able to see the humour in it!

Capitalism ‘delivers death’ Nesteroff article

Seems there is a discussion on the nature of capitalism making appearance in the letters section.

I’ll wade in.

Capitalism is a process where resources are applied to produce a commodity for sale, hopefully

In his letter (“Capitalism makes perfect sense” March 20, 2013) Mr. Van Caeseele is partially correct with his claim that the western world has reaped great rewards from capitalism. But these rewards have come from the exploitation of resources, vegetable, animal, especially human, mineral and now of course money has become a commodity.

Unfettered capitalism is, as Marx has written, “a revolutionary force.” By its very nature capitalism will, if allowed, exploit any resource until collapse or exhaustion by any means possible (war being the ultimate sin) for

the largest profit possible.

As we live on a planet with finite resources we see that capitalism will not work in the long run unless it is heavily regulated to perform as a “good citizen.”

Capitalism by its design is nihilistic in nature and will grow, as it has, to completely dominate all efforts to restrain the traits it represents. The driving trait of capitalism is for the ever-expanding accumulation of capital and personal wealth at any cost to life or life support systems. This is the mantra behind globalism’s drive for hegemony embodied in so called “free trade agreements” like the current Trans Pacific Partnership and Canadian/European Trading Agreement the Harper government is currently negotiating. These “trade” agreements are really all about conferring sovereign rights to corporations which trump those of nation states to control the manner in which profits are to accumulate.

This is what capitalism ultimately delivers... death in the long run as it cannot practice sustainability and remain capitalism.

brings pride to war hero’s son

I would like to thank Greg Nesteroff on a job very well done on his two excellent articles (“Kootenay soldiers families reunite after seven decades,” February 8 and “Kootenay war bond cemented,” February 15).

A big thank you to Greg who made it possible for me to visit Ron Cox who served under my dad, Lt. Denis Huscroft, at Little Tobruk during the last few weeks of World War II. During that time Mr. Cox was one of very few brave men to see my dad alive. He was killed in action short weeks after. Mr. Cox told me of that night dying to get into that German camp to capture a prisoner of war — being spotted, machine gun fire, running for his life, trying to get out alive. To you, Mr. Cox, thank you so much for sharing your memories of my dad with me, memories I will never forget.

To you again for the sacrifice you and brave men like you made so that my generation, my son’s generation, and his son’s generation can live in peace in such a wonderful country as Canada. To Greg again, your article made me so proud of my dad and so proud to be able to talk to a soldier who served with him.

The column on Jumbo Glacier Resort by MLA Michelle Mungall published on March 1 (“A town without a home”) is full of half-truths and exaggerations. Allow me to provide some facts.

Use of a municipal structure by the province to facilitate a large, important project is not unusual in BC. Tumbler Ridge for example was created before people lived there to mine the coal. Ditto for communities like Hudson’s Hope, Logan Lake and Elkford. The municipal structure lends itself to effective land use decision-making, particularly in this case where development of the resort must be in strict accordance with the Master Development Agreement and the Environmental Certificate.

MLA Mungall is also wrong that public tax dollars will be used to pay for resort infrastructure. All infrastructure at the resort municipality will be paid for by the developer.

As for democratic principles, MLA Mungall has chosen to ignore that the NDP, when last in government, actually encouraged the resort development. Mike Harcourt and Glen Clark are

both on the record enthusiastically supporting Jumbo Glacier Resort. Furthermore, the Kootenay Boundary Land Use Plan formally identifies the Jumbo Valley for resort development. This land use planning process was completed by NDP governments.

As for democratic principles, MLA Mungall has chosen to ignore that the NDP, when last in government, actually encouraged the resort development.

MLA Mungall also failed to mention that the Regional District of East Kootenay formally resolved to ask the province to use a Mountain Resort Municipality for this project. While it is true they preferred Jumbo Glacier Resort municipality not have a seat on the Regional District of East Kootenay board, as did I, the legislation did not allow for that. The next best thing was done. Letters patent state the new municipality does not have a vote until 2017.

Furthermore, the mayor of

the new municipality offered to attend Regional District of East Kootenay meetings only when invited. His offer was made before the board even discussed the matter.

In summary, use of a municipal structure for large, geographically isolated projects is not at all unusual; the NDP is very much on the record supporting the project; one of two First Nations, the Shuswap, supports the project; the project has an environmental certificate complete with 200 conditions on how the resort must be developed; and the proponent has been through 22 years of exhaustive process with Socred, NDP and BC Liberal governments, including much public consultation.

Only the NDP would suggest that after 22 years of demanding and expensive government process, it is “democratic” for the Crown to thumb its nose at a proponent who has met every single requirement of the province’s exhaustive permitting process for new resorts. I pity the business community in this province if the NDP are elected as government.

Local reggae/funk band Brian Rosen and the WhatNow play the Royal on Friday, April 5. Doors open at 8 p.m. and the show starts around 9 p.m. Cover is $5-10 sliding scale.

Fliks will be screening Midnight's Children on Wednesday, March 27 at 7:30 p.m. at the Capitol Theatre. The movie is Deepa Mehta's long awaited adaptation of Salman Rushdie's novel by the same name. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for youth, available in advance at Otter Books.

The second annual Deconstructing Dinner Film Festival runs Thursday, April 4 to Saturday, April 6, with a different venue each night. The feature film for that night is Smokin' Fish, about a Tlingit man who spends a summer at his family's traditional fish camp. Dinner starts at 6:30 p.m. and the film goes at 9 p.m. with live music to follow. On Friday, the festival moves to the Capitol Theatre for the world premiere of Episode 1 of the Deconstructing Dinner: Reconstructing Our Food System television series at 6:30 p.m. Hungry for Change, a film about health food myths, will follow at 8 p.m.

Saturday's films will be at the Civic Theatre, with Sushi: The Global Catch, a film about sushi's traditions, growth and future, at 2 p.m. followed by Bitter Seeds, on the plight of Indian farmers, at 3:30 p.m. In the evening Big Boys Gone Bananas!*, about struggles of plantation workers employed by fruit giant Dole, goes at 7 p.m. with The Chocolate Farmer, about a traditional Mayan cacao plantation in Belize, at 9 p.m.

Johnsons Landing Theft

Some items recovered Nelson Star Staff

Kaslo RCMP is crediting a sharp-eyed local citizen with pointing them in the right direction as some of the property stolen from the recent break and enters in the Johnsons Landing area has now been recovered.

Kaslo Detachment Commander, Corporal Shaun Begg, said a local resident, travelling near Fussey’s Corner, about 100 metres east of Highway 31, noticed a Toro lawn tractor, a snow plow, table saw, various hand tools and other equipment related to the recent break and enters, piled neatly at the side of the roadway.

This location is about 18 km away from the original site of the break and enters.

Begg said local citizens are often the “eyes and ears” for the police.

“This is certainly true in this case,” he said. “Special thanks to the citizen for coming forward.”

Despite a dryer than normal January and February, snow pack levels in the Kootenays remain 90 per cent of normal, according to the latest snow survey from the BC Resources River Forecast Centre.

Though snow levels are down from high years in 2011 and 2012, they are higher than in 2009 and 2010 when levels were recorded at 75 per cent of normal.

The report states February had wetter than normal conditions on Vancouver Island and the South Coast, Upper Fraser, North Columbia, South Coast and Lower Fraser. However the southern interior had drier than normal conditions.

As a result, snow basin indices decreased in the Similkameen and Kootenay. As far as flooding is concerned, the River Forecast Centre expects a normal freshet through most of the province.

Continued from Page 1 fire department. Both were drinking beer and neither wore a helmet. On their way home, they were going about 70 km/h on a logging road when their ATV went down an embankment. Salviulo died on the scene of severe head injuries.

According to the ruling, Medhurst’s blood alcohol content was between .22 and .26, about three times the legal limit, while Salviulo’s was .06. The central issue for the judge to decide was who was driving.

Four witnesses — two paramedics and two fellow ATVers who responded to Medhurst’s cries for help — testified that immediately after the incident, Medhurst told them repeatedly, “I killed my best friend” and “I killed Brandon.”

One paramedic said Medhurst explained Salviulo tapped him on the shoulder, and when he turned his head, the ATV veered right and went over the bank.

However, when Medhurst gave a statement to police two months later, he said he couldn’t remember who was driving. Soon after he told them Salviulo had been at the wheel, and repeated this at trial. He argued his earlier statements to paramedics were unreliable given his emotional and physical state.

But the judge rejected his testimony as inconsistent and contradictory and convicted him on both counts.

Medhurst is married with a young daughter.

He is also co-proprietor of Kootenay Forge, a blacksmith shop at Crawford Bay that employed six people who were laid off pending the outcome of the case.

“There has been no issue with respect to his behaviour since the incident,” Sheard wrote. “He is a dedicated volunteer in his small community ... His volunteerism began before these offences. They are not contrived.”

Medhurst was a firefighter and emergency medical responder and has attended counselling since the incident, the judge added.

The Crown asked for a jail sentence of three years plus a five-year driving ban, while the defence countered with a request for 90 days to be served on weekends plus community service and probation. The defence argued a lengthy jail sentence would likely mean the end of Medhurst’s business and financial ruin for his family.

The judge noted that following criminal code changes in 2007, conditional sentences aren’t allowed in cases of “serious personal injury.”

Salviulo’s parents, sister, foster sister and a family friend all read victim impact statements in court, from which Sheard concluded “the profound impact of these offences is particularly apparent ... They continue to experience the pain of their loss on a daily basis.”

and the fact Medhurst didn’t ensure Salviulo wore a helmet were all aggravating factors, but they were mitigated by Medhurst’s clean driving record and lack of criminal history.

“He is otherwise of good character and a very positive member of his community,” the judge wrote. “All the evidence suggests this is a one-time tragic event.”

APPEAL PENDING Medhurst’s lawyer Don Skogstad said in an interview an appeal of the verdict has been filed and is expected to

be heard in Kelowna but not for at least six months. In the meantime, Medhurst is serving his sentence in the Lower Mainland.

“There’s no current intention to apply for bail. Maybe later,” he said.

Skogstad said Salviulo’s death was a “terrible tragedy for such a small place” but Medhurst is “extremely wellregarded in the community.”

“Never in my career — and it’s a long one now — have I seen that many letters of support for anyone,” he said.

However, Salviulo’s family thinks Sheard made the right decision.

“We believe the judge was correct in his verdict of guilty,” Salviulo’s father Enzo told the Star. “Mr. Medhurst will never serve as severe a sentence as my wife and I due to his actions that led to the death of our son.”

Following Brandon’s death the Salviulo family created a scholarship fund in his memory to help students in the professional firefighter training program at College of the Rockies. Brandon was hoping to become a firefighter.

For each of the last three years, they have hosted a weekend family event in Riondel to raise money for the scholarship. However, Enzo said the event will likely be scaled back this year due to strain on volunteers.

“If we would have had one more jam we could have pulled our lead back,” Goodwin said. “The score was shifting jam to jam. It was intense.”

Still, she’s proud of her team for finishing fourth out of six teams in the tournament.

“We’re going to be a force to be reckoned with as the season continues and we get more practise in,” she said.

The Kannibelles is a travelling team made up of the best players from the house teams in the West Kootenay Roller Derby league. They meet twice a week, rotating practises between a gym in Salmo and the former Extra

Foods building in Nelson, which the league converted into a derby track earlier this year.

Goodwin said having the Extra Foods building as a practice space has been huge for team development.

“It allows us to have a weekly scrimmage, which we just couldn’t do before,” she said.

The Belles’ next tournament will be in Spokane in April. They’ll also host a home bout June 1 and will be heading to regionals in Fernie in July.

West Kootenays Kannibelles roller derby team finished fourth in the first ever Canadian National Tournament in Edmonton earlier this month.

The Belles brought 17 girls to the tournament, and over half of them were rookies who had never played in a national event.

Veteran jammer Jenna Goodwin (a.k.a. TeAmo) explained that the team needed a lot of new recruits because many of the girls from last season were Selkirk students who have since moved out of the community. This year’s team has been practising together since January.

“For many of the girls, it was an introduction to the type of high pressure, big bouts we’ll see throughout our season,” Goodwin said. “It was a good experience, and there was a lot of really amazing blocking and jamming throughout the weekend.”

The Belles opening game was against Saskatoon, the team that would go on to take Gold in the tournament. The Belles lost that bout 289-199.

Next, the Belles took on a team from Saint John, New Brunswick. The Kootenay team dominated this match, finishing ahead 300-99.

The final game for the Belles was a nail biter against the home team from Edmonton. The lead changed several times, with Edmonton pulling ahead with a slight advantage in the final min-

Nelson’s Isaac MacLeod and the Boston College Eagles will begin defence of their NCAA championship on Saturday night in Rhode Island.

Last season, the Eagles entered the tournament ranked numberone in the nation. After putting together a 22-11-4 record this season, Boston College had to wait until this past weekend’s announcement of the 16-team draw to know whether they would have a shot at defending the national hockey championship. The Eagles beat Ferris State 4-1 in Tampa Bay last April to become the best in US college hockey.

The Eagles will start their quest for a second straight title on Saturday night at the Dunkin Donuts Centre in Providence, RI. The competition will be Union College of New York, a private college with a powerhouse hockey team that claimed the ECAC (East Coast Athletic Conference) title earlier

this month for the second straight season.

The Eagles failed to capture the Hockey East title this past weekend after losing to rival Boston University 6-3 in the Friday night semi-final. Boston University then lost 1-0 to UMass Lowell in the Saturday final.

MacLeod is a junior at Boston College. In his third year of NCAA play, the talented defenceman scored two goals and added five assists in 35 games. MacLeod grew up in the Nelson Minor Hockey system, played for the Kootenay AAA Midget Ice, the Nelson Junior Leafs as a 16-year-old and then with the Penticton Vees of the BCHL. In 2010, MacLeod was drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the fifth round of the NHL draft.

If the Eagles win Saturday night, they will play the winner of Quinnipiac and Canisius on Sunday.

Two victories this weekend will get the Eagles to the Frozen Four which takes place in Pittsburg starting April 11.

As the snow melts and skiers enjoy their last glides on the trails, Nelson Nordic Ski Club would like to thank all members, day-pass users, and volunteers for an excellent nordic season.

The last day of grooming will be March 31 on which date the night lights will be turned off.

To prevent further erosion of the Busk/Euphrates trail have now been closed. Please note that trail is private property and no dogs are allowed at any time.

Before heading out to Apex or Busk for one last glide please call 250-354-4292 for the latest in snow conditions on the trail system. Otherwise, wipe off the skis and pack them safely away for next year’s season’s trek up to ring the bell at the top of the Clearwater trail.

Rhythmic Dimensions is starting its spring program schedule next month. Learn to dance with ribbons, hoops,

Our mother, Anne Strebchuck, passed away on January 15, 2013 in Nelson, BC, at the age of 85 years.

She leaves behind her children Caroline, Vicky, Stan, Tim (Leesa), MaryAnne (Bill), Misha (Seanagh), and Dunya (Sandro), along with many grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is also dearly missed by her sisters Vera Fear, Mercedes Finnigan and brother Bill Markin.

Anne lived most of her life in Hills, BC, where she grew up, went to school, and married Alex Strebchuck.

After her children grew up, she went back to school and became a long term care aide and went to work. Anne loved to sing and was a member of the Nelson Ladies Doukhobor Choir. After her husband’s passing, she moved to Nelson, BC. Mom will be remembered for her amazing writing, her paintings and wonderful flower garden. Her family was very proud of her accomplishments. A memorial will be held at Hills, BC, in June, 2013.

OBARA – Kazuyoshi (Casey) It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Kazuyoshi Obara in his 89th year.

He suffered a massive stroke on March 7, 2013 and passed away peacefully on March 10, 2013. He will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Toshi (nee Masuda) of 62 years, son Barry (Colleen), daughter Joanie (Wayne) and three wonderful grandchildren, Stephanie, Shaun (Shannon) and Robert; along with numerous nieces and nephews, extended family and friends. He is predecessed by his brothers, Mitsuo and Shizuo and sisters, Yaeko and Aki. As the years passed and his memories started to fade there were two things you could count on. One, his devotion to his beloved wife Toshi and two, that he could still beat anyone in cards.

Casey had a long career in the forest industry.

Lived in the Slocan Valley for most of his life and moved to Victoria in 2003.

At his request there will be no funeral.

Alec Saviskoff Born: March 25, 1932 Passed: March 04, 2013

Alec Saviskoff passed away peacefully with his family at his side on March 04, 2013 at Kootenay Lake Hospital at the age of 80. He had been battling cancer for the past 2 years.

Al was born on March 25, 1932 in the Doukhobor settlement of Glade, BC, to Nick and Molly Saviskoff. The family later moved to Bonnington where he was followed by his sister Vera and brothers Cyril and Gus. He attended elementary school in Bonnington and continued his education at Trafalgar Junior High and Nelson High school in Nelson. The family moved to Taghum (Sproule Creek) in 1950. Al spent his summers and after school working at various jobs – HB Mine in Salmo, CP Rail, orchards in the Okanagan during harvest season, and driving for Jonella Cleaners delivery service. After a bad car accident at the age of 19, he spent several years recuperating from a broken leg, and then attended business school in Nelson.

On December 17, 1955, Al and Olga were married in the United Church Hall on Stanley Street and in September 1956, they began the work journey around BC. The first stop was Kitimat (1956 – 1962), followed by Cranbrook (1962 – 1964), Mission City (1964 – 1965), Abbotsford (1965 – 1967), and happily returning to Nelson as supervisor in 1967 until he retired. Along the way, Al and Olga had four children: Peter (1956), Molly Ann (1957), Shirley (1966), and Alan (1969).

Al always wanted to participate in each community he lived in. He joined the Kinsmen Club in Kitimat and was a member until the club folded in Nelson. He was president of the Cranbrook Kinsmen Club and the director of the BC Polio Foundation.

He was an ardent bowler and belonged to leagues in Cranbrook and Mission. In 1980, he and his brother Cyril fulfilled a lifelong dream and purchased the Heritage Lanes Bowling Alley. They enjoyed running it along with their wives until 1982 when, sadly, it was destroyed by a fire.

Al was also a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie #22 and served as secretary treasurer for many years.

He joined the Masonic Lodge in Nelson rising to the position of Worshipful Master. Through his membership with the Masons, Al also became a Shriner, attending many functions through the years and being very active in their fundraising initiatives.

In 1987, Al suffered a massive heart attack that ended his working days. He had bypass surgery and recovered his health.

In 1989, he and Olga drove across Canada to visit friends in Ontario. One highlight of the trip was touring the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa and seeing the Red Army Chorus and musicians performing in the Rotunda (lobby), and getting to visit with some of the group. Al also saw John Fraser, Speaker of the House and Don Mazenkowski, Deputy Prime Minister.

There were many more trips as Al loved to drive. He loved his red VW convertible. He was even asked to drive it down Baker Street for Steve Martin’s movie “Roxanne”, though it didn’t make it to the screen. In the 90’s, Al and Olga made a few bus trips to Reno where Al got to enjoy video poker. They began snow birding, driving to Palm Springs and enjoying the sunshine, warm pool, and making new friends.

In 2008, Al became a good cook as Olga was having some health issues. He could make the best chili, greek salad, and minestrone soup. Al kept busy, was never bored, enjoying his grandchildren’s visits, watching favorite his TV shows, especially hockey. He was so pleased when his favorite team, the Boston Bruins won. Al mastered the computer and spent hours reading a great variety of subjects. He enjoyed his conversations with friends and relatives. Al carried with him his belief in a peaceful way of life, strong principles, and he had a strong passion for history and his Doukhobor heritage.

Al was predeceased by his parents Nick and Molly, and brothers Gus and Cyril. He is survived by his loving wife Olga of 57 years, sons Peter (Dominique), Alan, daughters Shirley (Sasha)(Ramin), grandchildren: Nicholas (Christina), Angela (Devan), Tosh, Tula, Kourtney, Kaden, Jordyn, Mathieu. Also sister Vera Maglio (Bud), sisters in law Georgina and Joan, brother in law John Zalewski (Marlene) and many nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.

Kalein’s Executive Director will lead the development and growth of a unique centre where questions like these, and all aspects of what it means to “live fully at all stages of life including end-of-life,” are explored in a master-planned campus setting, featuring a Centre for Dialogue & Education fully integrated with a residential hospice care facility.

You will consult with the Board of Directors to fulfill Kalein’s unique vision and mission for this integrated campus. In addition to the management aspects of the position, you will oversee and be engaged with development of a variety of programming and funding initiatives, you will cultivate relationships with thought leaders and partners locally and globally, from a wide range of disciplines, you will lead Kalein’s evolution as a recognized centre of inquiry and care.

You will feel completely at home in a variety of environments, whether developing long term strategies, managing day-to-day operations, representing Kalein to the public and potential funders, negotiating cooperative partnerships and working side-by-side with volunteers. You will have compassionate empathy for the end-of-life experience.

The Rotary Adventure in Forestry and Environmental Studies Program, launched in 1990 by the Rotary Club of Prince George Yellowhead, is intended to promote an interest in careers in forestry. The Adventure in

This program incorporates the latest technology and provides first hand, on-site experience. Students from all over Western Canada participate in this three-day event, which for many, has shaped careers and life paths.

Selected students must be between 16 and 19 years of age on May 1, enrolled in and attending school (Grade 11 or 12), and be maintaining acceptable grade standards.

Preferably, the student should be considering a career in the applicable program. The program includes billets for the out-of-town students and local transportation.

Easy ways to be more active Embracing an active lifestyle that leaves behind the comforts of the couch can be a difficult adjustment. But the payoffs of adopting a more active lifestyle are numerous. In addition to feeling better physically, women who embrace more physical activity typically notice improvements in their mood as well.

The positive mental effects related to physical activity are no accident, as numerous studies have shown exercise can stimulate chemicals in your brain that improve your mood while also lowering stress and helping you relax. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, aerobic exercise or a mix of aerobic exercise and strengthtraining activities three to five times a week for 30 to 60 minutes has been shown to improve cognitive ability and judgement, reduce a person's risk of developing depression and improve sleep.

The numerous positive effects of physical activity illustrate just how beneficial such a lifestyle can be.

Even better, embracing an active lifestyle does not mean you have to start planning that expedition to climb Mount Everest or start training for the triathlon. In fact, a few minor adjustments to your current routine might be all it takes to reap the rewards of living a more active lifestyle.

Walk This Way Walking more can help many people quickly and easily improve their physical and mental condition.

Instead of retiring to the couch after dinner, take

a walk around the neighbourhood with your family or significant other. Or go it alone and use your nightly walk as a peaceful opportunity to collect your thoughts. Walking after dinner is a great way to get in some daily cardiovascular exercise, and a post-dinner walk might encourage you to eat less.

Walking can be incorporated into your daily routine in other ways as well. On shopping trips, park further away from the store so you can walk more.

And walk kids to school or the bus stop instead of dropping them off in your car.

Do Your Own Chores It might be easier to pay a neighbourhood kid to cut your lawn, but that big green yard outside your front door presents a great opportunity for you to be more physically active. Mow your own lawn, choosing a push mower instead of a ride-on mower, and tend to your trees, shrubs and flowers yourself. This is a great way to be more physically active, and the physical and mental rewards might just be outdone by the pride you feel when seeing a beautiful landscape you tended to yourself.

Embrace a Cause If the known physical and mental benefits of an active lifestyle are not proving to be ample motivation in your quest to be more physically active, then perhaps the opportunity to help others might do the trick. Numerous charities sponsor charity walks or runs that provide participants with an opportunity to raise money for a good cause. Even better, such

events tend to take all comers, so you might be able to enlist your friends, family members or coworkers to join you. Signing up for a 10K might be just the motivation you need to get out and start training.

And once the training begins, chances are you won't want to stop even after the charity event has come and gone.

Join a Sports League Many women played in recreational sports leagues as a youth or young adult. Unfortunately, it's easy to abandon those recreational activities when the responsibilities of work and family take over. But joining a sports league is a great way to reach your weekly exercise goals, meet new friends and reconnect with a game you might have loved as a child. Many people find it's easier to embrace a more active lifestyle when they enjoy their physical activities, so find a sport you enjoy playing and then start playing it more. Q & A with Leslie Beck

By Kirsten Hildebrand Leading Canadian nutritionist Leslie Beck will be appearing in Nelson for Find Your Divine presented by the Star. Born and raised in Vancouver, Beck completed her undergraduate work in Dietetics at UBC before moving east to study for her Masters in Epidemiology at the University of Toronto. Today, as a Registered Dietician, she operates a private practice in downtown Toronto open since 1989.

The best selling author of 12 books is recognized in the media as an authority on nutrition and food issues. Beck makes regular appearances on CTV News and Canada AM. She also writes a weekly column in the Globe and Mail.

The Nelson Star caught up with Beck in Toronto last week and you can expect to hear more about some of these issues at Find Your Divine at the Prestige Lakeside Resort on April 4.

Q. How did you get interested in nutrition and women’s health issues?

Absolutely my clientele over the years has dictated my interests. While I absolutely work with men, I see a lot of women. And women want lots of nutrition information for their own health and for their families’ health. The kinds of questions that my female clients are asking me have really led my areas of interest. Thirteen years ago there was a huge demand for good information about natural alternatives to menopause and that really started my first book (Managing Menopause with Diet, Vitamins and Herbs, now called The Complete Guide to Menopause) at that time there wasn’t a lot of information out there to help women. I want to take care of myself too so there’s a personal interest there. And I think, just when you look at women’s health, we do have very different nutritional needs than men. The biology of our bodies increases the need for many nutrients. The hormone fluctuations we experience during different life cycles also dictate out nutrient needs and our appetites. And of course women have a unique risk for certain diseases, osteoporosis and breast cancer, etc. so there are a whole bunch of reasons it’s interesting to me and important to me to be educating women about healthy food choices for them and their families.

And so many women today, we take care of everybody else and we come last. If you’re not as energetic as you can be, or feeling as well, or taking care of yourself then you’re not going to be doing a good job for the rest of your family and loved ones. That’s an important message I try to get out to women.

Q. What’s the number one health concern you hear from women today?

The top health concern for women that I see is definitely weight control. That will always be big. Women are concerned and I think it’s not just about aesthetics and vanity anymore. It used to be more about that 20 to 25 years ago. But today we know the roll that excess body fat plays in a number of different diseases including cancers.

That’s important. Women are always, of course, very concerned about breast cancer. Women should be concerned about other cancers and heart disease more than breast cancer but the fact of the matter is that’s a big fear. I think the other common theme I am hearing today is really, they just want to age healthfully. Women really want to do everything they can to stay healthy, improve their health as much as they can as they age, so they have the energy and they’re going to be in good health when they are older.

Q. What do you enjoy about reaching out to women?

Women are an amazing audience to speak to, to write to, to talk to because they are so keenly interested. And I work with clients one on one on a daily basis and I know that if a woman comes to me with advice on nutrition it’s going to influence the rest of her family as well and everyone gets healthy in the process. Women are a real captive audience. They’re interested and they have the power to influence their children, their spouses and their friends thorough that knowledge.

Q. You speak about an integrated approach, why is that important to achieving optimal health?

Absolutely my philosophy is eating foods first to get your nutrients — I really believe in a whole foods approach to nutrition, meaning foods as close to their natural state as possible. Minimize processed foods, etc. But we certainly do know that there are a number of scenarios when, not just women but everybody, can’t get the nutrients they need through food alone so you need to bridge the gap with a supplement. I look at not only diet and teaching people how to choose healthy foods in the right portions to really boost their nutrients and antioxidant intake but also how supplements play a role and I use a very evidence-based approach …

An integrated approach also includes looking at the whole person. So, it’s not just about what people eat but other lifestyle factors that influence the foods they have available to them. You have to consider everything.

Q. Nelson is known for its healthy knowledge about health. How important is it for a community to work toward this together?

When there is a community that is very interested and motivated to make healthy food choices, to grow local foods, to support local foods and to sort of educate each other and talk about it, that transcends down from adults to children. It is really important. I think that’s a really positive thing.

Q. I am sure, as with most busy working women, getting healthy food on the table for dinner is a challenge with time and energy a handicap. What is the secret? What is your go to meal?

The key is to plan ahead. That is absolutely the key, whether you want to exercise, whether you want to eat healthy, whatever you want to do to stay healthy, you have to plan. The busier you are the more important planning becomes. I am always sort of thinking what I am going to make for dinner. I don’t do a week’s worth of dinners but at least a few days in advance. I eat a plant-based diet but also eat fishes but I don’t eat meat. I do a lot of meals with beans and legumes. Last night I had black bean tostados that are super fast to make. Another quick meal that I will often make is fish. I’ll bake a fillet of salmon or trout and that only takes 20 minutes in the oven. I will also batch cook on the weekends. I’ll make food in advance for the week. I have a lot of clients who do this, grilling a whole bunch of chicken breasts CONTINUED ON PAGE 4

When you get into a rut and your creativity isn’t there anymore, it’s time to go buy a magazine or go online and check out different recipes. Try find inspiration from outside sources to get interested again. There are a lot of great magazines, Cooking Light and Eating Well.

There are some great vegetarian magazines and some great websites to check out. I don’t watch these shows myself but many women love the Food Network and love the shows on there.

And you know, you can pick up the phone and start trading recipes with your friends. Ask “what’s a really great, fast and easy recipe that’s a favourite with you and your family.”

Q. In today’s age of information overload, it can be hard to make sense of the food we eat. How do you balance providing information without overwhelming people?

For example, there’s the whole calcium supplement issue. Should I be taking a calcium supplement? Will it increase my risk of a heart attack? The studies have gone back and forth and back and forth. I don’t blame women out there for not knowing what to think or what to do. My role when I am writing or when I am speaking is really try and synthesize, in very consumer friendly easy to understand language, the evidence that we have to date and what that means to you and then give a practical recommendation. I try to put everything in balance and tell people, here are all the things we know about this particular issue today, the weight of the evidence really suggests you should be doing A not B. Q. What do you think of dietary extremes, fads and trends?

We are always searching for that magic fix. That will never go away. There will always be an appetite or demand for the next best thing. Right now what’s coming out is fasting to lose weight. The Fast Diet - it’s just coming to Canada now. It’s taken Britain by storm in January, then it hit the States. What I always do when something comes out, whether it’s the Fast Diet, the Wheat Belly Diet, I have every book in my office. I read them. I look at the rationale and the evidence and I try and make sense out of it for people. I tell people here’s how you can do it in the short term and here’s how you can do it more healthfully. I am not a fan. I don’t like extreme diets because if you’re following them long term, you run the risk of becoming depleted of certain nutrients. But also psychologically, they’re just reinforcing this all or nothing approach. It does nothing to promote balanced healthy eating.

Q. In addition to Find your Divine, what are you most looking forward to about your visit to Nelson?

Seeing my girlfriend Laurel Colins. We have known each other since Grade 6. And being back in Nelson. I have not been in Nelson since I was in Grade 10 and I came to visit Laurel when she moved there. Nelson, as I recall, is beautiful.

And I am looking forward to speaking to all the women out there. It’s going to be great. I am excited.

Leslie Beck's Quinoa Tabbouleh Tabbouleh is a Middle Eastern salad traditionally made with bulgur, a cracked wheat. I've changed things up and substituted quinoa, a whole grain that's high in protein.

Ingredients 4 cups / 1 L cooked quinoa 1.5 cups / 375 ml diced cucumber 1 cup / 250 ml finely chopped parsley 1/4 cup / 50 ml chopped fresh mint, or more to taste (I am generous with mint!)

1 cup / 250 ml chopped tomato 2 green onions, chopped 1/4 cup / 50 ml freshly squeezed lemon juice, or more to taste 1 tbsp / 15 ml extra virgin olive oil 3 cloves garlic, crushed 1/2 tsp / 2 ml coarse sea salt, or to taste Directions In a large bowl, toss quinoa, cucumber, parsley, mint, tomato, green onion, lemon juice, olive oil, garlic and salt.

Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.

Serves 6.

Kristina, Kootenay Co-op Stress is a part of everyday life. The body’s response to stress is mediated by the hormones adrenaline and cortisol, designed to get the body mobilized into action, so it can survive imminent danger.

Today, stresses are not singular events of the pouncing tiger type, but multiple, varied and continuous in nature. Yet, they still trigger the same hormonal cascade and corresponding physical changes such as increased heart rate and breathing, breakdown of tissues for energy and suppression of digestion and immune response. For short periods of time, being this fired up is not harmful, and indeed is necessary. It is only if the body is kept in constant high alert mode that trouble arises.

Getting a break in the stress response, to allow cortisol levels to drop again, is vital to give the body a chance to regenerate and recover. Here are some suggestions: • Exercise! Your body is wired to activate you into physical action, so use up the fuel that has been made available by cortisol to prevent it from turning to fat around your mid line.

• Take regular breaks throughout the day to read, meditate or daydream.

• Imagine creative solutions and positive outcomes for problems at hand.

Research has shown that thoughts such as “I can do this!” can lower cortisol substantially.

• Slow down, get a massage, take a bath, do yoga.

• Avoid stimulants that contain caffeine or similar substances especially in the afternoon.

• Sleep. Less than 5 or 6 hours per night does not allow enough time for regeneration.

The key is to manage the stress response to allow yourself to rebuild, regenerate and recover so that you can live life with energy, mental clarity and joy.

Giving makes the body feel good The warm and fuzzy feeling that arises when helping others is what drives many to donate money or do good for others. Studies show that altruism may actually have profound physiological effects.

Scientists have determined that the feelings of happiness associated with doing good can be traced to a particular pleasure center of the brain that can be viewed and measured with brain scans. There are physical components to doing thoughtful or charitable things, according to a 2008 report in The New York Times.

This bodes well for donations as the recession continues to hit the country in a big way. Individuals who are facing layoffs or pay cuts may still dig deep into their pockets for charitable donations because they seek the high that donating provides.

And it isn't just financial donations that make a person happy. Any type of goodwill toward others is a way to generate the endorphins and mood-boosting properties of altruism. That means there are plenty of opportunities that can boost feelings of happiness.

• During the holiday season, write a "Letter from Santa" to a less fortunate child and include a gift card to a toy store so that he or she can get a treat.

• Visit seniors in a retirement community or assisted living facility and sit and chat for a while.

• Knock on an elderly neighbour's door and find out if you can help out with any chores around the house.

• Bring a friend breakfast or lunch simply because you were thinking of them and wanted to surprise them.

• Take in the trash cans for your entire street, especially if the weather is nasty.

• Tell a coffee shop employee or another hard worker that they're doing a good job. Complaints come easy in the service industry, but praise is often hard to get.

• Volunteer to watch neighbourhood children so other mothers and fathers can get a much-needed break.

• Don't ignore a phone solicitation from a charity organization. Get more information and do your best to donate.

• If you practice a religion, go to your house of worship and participate in community togetherness.

• Hold a door, smile at someone or offer to get something down from a tall shelf in a store. It's the little things that can bring pleasure.

• Share something you have with another person who doesn't. That may mean generator-supplied electric power during a power outage, a special snack at school lunch, a tool, a piece of clothing or whatever you can think of.

There are so many ways to give to others, and one of the biggest benefits is the smiles and positive feelings giving provides.

The best thing you can do for yourself is get a good night’s sleep. Science backs this up. A good night’s sleep can improve memory and performance at work or school. Children who lack a good night’s sleep can show signs of ADHD. Sleep improves life-span. If you sleep better, you live better. A good night's sleep

This creates a smooth soft deluxe feeling sheet, perfect for when one need to be warm, or for a person that tends to be cold in bed.

A lower thread count cotton sheet, is not as soft and tends to be crisper feeling. They are made with a thicker thread, therefore less threads per square inch making them more breathable and in fact more durable. Now, one could go on at length about sheets. High or low thread count, not all sheets are created equal.

There are many variables when it comes to sheeting, such as where the cotton is grown, type of cotton and thread length, but I want to get back to sleep.

The other big thing affecting sleep for myself was the featherbed, sleeping on feathers is very warm and combined with the high thread count cover on the featherbed as well as the high thread count sheets, it was simply too warm. Our bodies naturally produce sweat to lower body temperature when we are hot then we become cold and suddenly fully awake and uncomfortable and needing to readjust and go through the whole process of falling back to sleep again which often never happens. I would never have imagined my bedding could be the cause of this miserable nightly ritual. Enter now the wonderful fibre wool and all its helpful restorative properties.

Wool is a natural temperature regulator and it also wicks moisture away. So when sweating in the night does occur, because it will (life change, etc.) you may not become fully awake thanks to the wool absorbing the moisture from your body and keeping you temperature regulated so you don’t miss a beat on sleep.

It is very important you find the right bedding for you, your spouse, your kids and even your pet. We all deserve to be well rested. Having an uncomfortable mattress can also impact your life immensely. When the body is not supported properly one can spend a lot of time tossing and turning to find a comfortable position, until finally settling on a sleeping pose that seems okay but may be putting stress on shoulders or your back. Spending a third of one's life in bed in a position that is actually causing muscle stress and back problems is extremely detrimental. The most important thing is to get a comfortable supportive mattress and wonderful bedding and enjoy the very best quality of sleep. Everything else falls away without a good rest. We all know how it feels to drag through the day with an achy back or shoulder or so tired all you want to do is get the day over with and go back to bed.

The bedroom should be a sanctuary. Don’t let it be your office or TV room. If you live in a small space and need to use your room for these purposes reduce the amount of energy running through your space by keeping these 21st century devices plugged in to a power bar, which can be switched off, and keep the TV covered while sleeping. Put your laptop away and turned off at bedtime so you can focus on your healing and rejuvenating, glorious sleep. Have the walls and the bedding be in restful tone, this is not the place for vibrant stimulating colours. People sleep better in a safe and protected space, so place your headboard against the wall to feel more secure. Ensure you can see the door from your bed, it will give you a sense of security. Close the door to an adjoining bathroom if there is one. You don’t need to be looking at a toilet, talk about “draining.” Make sure cleaning solutions used in the bedroom are not toxic chemicals and open a window for air circulation.

As the majority of us do not get the nutrients we need from our daily diet, supplementation is crucial to boost levels of minerals, vitamins and antioxidants as health insurance and prevention. But what if the food we consumed on a regular basis WERE our supplements?
