There is light at the end of trusteeship for Langford Legion.

The books at the Langford Legion have been the responsibility of The B.C. Yukon Command of The Royal Canadian Legion since January.

“It’s a big branch with a housing unit. It’s an operation far more complex than a branch with 100 members,” said Inga Kruse, executive director of the B.C. Yukon Command. “(The Langford Legion) is a highly complex business.”

While everything is still being sorted out, Kruse is confident in the future for the Langford Legion.

“We never invest in something if we intend to close it. It’s the whole reason we are investing in this. I have no worries about the future of the branch,” Kruse said. “When you run an organization with volunteers you need to give them some help. I am so confident with the members.”

Kruse explained the Command would like to see new members join the Langford Legion which is always looking for volunteers.

“In America the legions are falling apart, but here in B.C. we are going to be OK,” Kruse said.

West Shore full of Easter fun

The Ruth King elementary school field will transform to a colourful mosaic of eggs this Saturday.

Chris Synesael, pastor of West Village Church will be out bright and early roping off the field and spreading 2,500 eggs for eager youngsters to collect.

The field will be roped into quadrants so youngsters can scramble for eggs in safety.

“We don’t want two year olds to have to compete against seven year olds,” said the Langford pastor.

After the hunt, the plastic eggs are traded in for chocolate ones. Last year the church stuffed the eggs by hand, but this way just seems a little easier, Synesael said.

Some will contain golden tickets. Any child lucky enough to nab a ticket can trade it in for a prize.

The family event will include bouncy castles, face painting, a fish pond and a candy bar and a crazy hair station.

“We will have coloured hairspray and elastics so the kids can make their hair as crazy as their face painting,” said church volunteer Kerri Braunberger. “It’s an afternoon of fun and it’s not just an egg hunt.”

The event is free including the barbecue.

“We just want to give back,” said Synesael. “As a church we want to give blessing to the community.”

West Village Church The West Village Church is hosting Easter festivities Saturday, March 30 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Bring the family for an egg hunt, bouncy castles, a clown, face painting and barbecue. All activities and food are free of charge in the field at Ruth King elementary school, 2764 Jacklin Rd. Bring your own Easter basket. Gordon United Church offers its parking lot for patrons.

Kinette Club of Juan de Fuca The Kinette Club of Juan de Fuca is hosting its 13th annual Easter egg hunt March 30 at West Shore Parks and Recreation behind the library, 1759 Island Highway. The egg hunt is open for children 13 and under. The hunt starts at 10 a.m.

City Centre Park The Easter Egg Hunt at City Centre Park is on March 31. Four hunts will be set up and divided into age groups. The first hunt begins at 10:15 a.m for children three and under, 10:45 a.m. for three to five year olds, 11:15 a.m. for six to nine year olds and 11:45 a.m. for nine to 12 year olds.

Artist outlines twist on traditional egg

D

ebbie Palliser, an artist at Coast Collective art gallery, has been painting Easter eggs for years. Hollowing out the egg shells first can save little ones from making sticky messes while painting. The eggs can be decorated as intricate or as sim- on the West Shore ply as you want. Palliser likes to paint her eggs with acrylic paint, but said any paint or marker would work.

1. Wash the egg with soap and water.

2. With a hammer and a little nail tap a hole in the top and the bottom of the egg. Make sure the hole is a little bigger on the bottom so the whites and yolk can exit a little easier. Palliser suggests using a pointed fishing or darning needle.

3. Shake the egg to help break up the yoke. Then blow out the egg from the top hole. The smaller the bottom hole the more lung power this will take, explains Palliser.

“The egg shell is porous and sealer will allow for shell to not absorb the paint,” Palliser said also explaining it will strengthen the shell.

hen Justine and Walter Ash moved into their Vic West home two weeks ago, they thought they’d found the perfect location.

The Hereward Street property, on the border between Victoria and Esquimalt, offered easy access to the E&N rail trail, a big yard and ample space to raise their first child, due in May. Before they put down an offer, the couple checked with the Capital Regional District about construction in the area.

“We knew about the sewage pipeline being built out from McLoughlin Point to Hartland (landfill in Saanich), so we Daniel Palmer Reporting wanted to know if the street would be torn up,” Justine said. “It never occurred to us they would be building a shit factory across the street.”

The CRD announced last week it purchased a $17-million industrial property on Viewfield Road, just metres from the Ashes’ home, as a possible site for a solid waste processing facility. Should the site be used, sewage would be pumped about two kilometres from the wastewater treatment plant at McLoughlin Point to be harvested for energy and resources.

It would save $6 to $7 million in annual operating costs over building a biosolids plant at Hartland – which would require 18 km of pipes – said Langford Coun.

Museum refresh shifts gears

Jack Lohman was animated describing how the Royal B.C. Museum will morph from a facility that is “tired and in need of upgrades” to one that reaches “new levels of excellence.”

The museum CEO, who completes his first year on the job March 26, used Tuesday’s announcement of a top-notch architectural team for the museum’s major upgrade to explain his vision for the future.

Comparing the current entrance hall to that of a shopping mall, he called for the creation of a more welcoming and appropriate gateway to the exhibits.

Not only that, he said, the facility needs a refresh to make it more appealing and accessible to visitors, both locals and tourists.

“We know tourism here is a fivemonth, intense period, but we need to attract visitors all year round,” he said. “We have a huge local population that is very educated and deeply interested in his-

tory and culture. We need to make that offer to the local community, but we are (also) a museum for the entire province.”

Despite the big-picture talk, the announcement Tuesday was merely the kickoff to six months of work to create a master site plan for the museum precinct. The goal is to see significant changes by 2017 and completion of the work in time for B.C.’s 150th anniversary in 2021.

John McAslan’s internationally renowned London company will serve as lead architect in the creation of that plan, which also involves the B.C. Archives next door.

Recognizing the need to air out the museum’s offerings, he pointed to a need to “allow the building to breathe and be connected in a way that allows movement and circulation.”

Lohman distanced himself from a previous development plan that called for two more towers to be built onsite, a plan for which the museum received a rezoning approval for the property in 2011.

The idea of erecting two office towers “scared me,” Lohman said, adding it was an inappropriate way to develop museum space.

The overarching objective is to create a master plan for the existing site, obtaining better value for what’s already there, rather than creating a building plan, he said.

Victoria Coun. Pam Madoff, city council’s unofficial heritage watchdog the past two decades, sounded excited about the possibilities for the site, especially with McAslan on board.

Aware of the type of major transformations the U.K. company has undertaken – rebuilding the Iron Market in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, or refurbishing a stodgy King’s Cross Station in London before the 2012 Olympics, for example – Madoff’s eyes lit up talking about the opportunity to remake the provin-

cial museum.

“It’s his principles that interest me,” she said of the vision McAslan and colleagues have demonstrated. “It’s about recognizing the value in what’s there while being sensitive (to the surroundings). I’ve never felt so optimistic.”

The 2011 rezoning was a painful process, Madoff recalled. “Those (ideas) were built on a business model,” she says. “Today’s plan is what does the museum need?”

Local architect Paul Merrick’s firm will play a leading role in developing and interpreting the visions of the McAslan group.

Merrick recalled that the museum was built by the W.A.C. Bennett government in the rather utilitarian style of the 1960s.

“It was essentially a black box that was habited by experiences,

or what we call exhibits today,” he said.

While technological improvements and additions such as the National Geographic IMAX Theatre have created added value for the facility, he said, they haven’t done anything to remove impedances to first-time visitors.

Merrick considers the corner of Belleville and Government streets ground zero for tourists in Victoria, given its proximity to the legislature, the Fairmont Empress Hotel and the Inner Harbour. The museum is juxtaposed between those two architectural icons, he said, yet often gets missed, in part due to its somewhat nondescript appearance.

Trish Coleman was given four to six months to live last October.

“It’s been six months since the diagnosis, and I feel better than I did two months ago,” said the Gordon Head resident.

“I don’t know if I am going to live very much longer, but I am OK with that. I am at peace with that.”

Sitting in his View Royal home, Guenther gently picks apart tiny emu feathers and grinds them with a mortar and pestle. The feathers are ground into lactose powder, a common ingredient in homeopathic medicine.

In the final product “there is not much substance of the emu feather, but it’s the energy,” he explained.

“Homeopathy is a treatment with remedies that are made from substances of nature that still carry the energy of these substances,” Guenther said.

Guenther, a former surgeon

Roland Guenther graduated from a German medical school in 1980 and became a surgeon mainly performing abdominal procedures but also working on trauma patients.

“Then I realized I didn’t want to grow old in a hospital,” he said explaining why he moved into a position as a general practitioner in 1985.

“I always had a strong connection with nature and our bodies are part of nature,” Guenther said. “I started looking into alternative treatments.”

In Germany homeopathy is incorporated into mainstream medical treatment.

He began studying native medicines and became a sundancer, lead sweat-lodges, became a pipecarrier and went on vision quests in the mountains.

“I learned everything in nature is soulful, every plant and every stone. I learned to communicate with our plants,” he said.

A medicine man brought Guenther to Chief Mountain in Montana for his first vision quest in 1996. The quest lasted four days and nights.

“No food, no water, just pipes and praying,” he explained.

He has been working on treatments specifically for First Nations people and gone to great lengths to learn, including milking a buffalo in Northern Saskatchewan.

Guenther explained issues plaguing aboriginal communities around the world such as diabetes and drug and alcohol addiction should be looked at on a collective level instead of an individual one.

Four years ago he started a group of homeopathic doctors treating homeless people on the downtown Eastside in Vancouver. The group has grown to include 20 people volunteering two days each a month.

The men were trained on accident investigation and learned to prevent injuries explained Trevor Davies, Colwood’s occupational health and safety advisor.

“Everyday we are responsible for work safety,” said Davies, one of the recipients.

Mayor Carol Hamilton said Vancouver is following suit having all of its public works supervisors take the course. Vancouver has 240.

Manitoba may not be known for its mountain ranges and steep terrain, but the hills of the prairies is where owner of Fawcett Expeditions, Rob Fawcett, discovered his passion for mountain biking.

Fawcett – a retired chartered accountant – works in partnership with an Italy-based company, Progetto Avventura, along with Oak Bay Bicycles, to take adventure seekers to international destinations on a mountain bike.

The idea came to Fawcett after a year-long 15,000 kilometre around-the-world mountain bike trip. Instead of taking the highways and main roadways, he opted for the road – or trail – less traveled.

“I went from Vancouver to Halifax, and from there I took a plane to Ireland and biked to Wales and then England and over to France, Belgium, Holland to Germany, Austria, Slovenia and Croatia,” he said.

The journey continued from Greece and through the Middle East into Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Uzebekistan, Kyrgyzstan and China.

“I … tried to find the most interesting way to get from here to there,” Fawcett said.

“Because you can take the highway, but as a mountain biker, I find that’s the least fun and admirable way to ride your bike.”

The B.C. portion of Fawcett’s trip ended up being the first expedition offered by the company, which now takes people to Italy, Mongolia and China.

Oak Bay Bicycles owner Karl Ullrich got involved about three years ago, when he and couple of his staff headed to Italy to scope out a new road route in Sicily and an off-road route from Rome to Florence.

route, which goes through Umbria and Tuscany, taking the long road.

“Even backroads would be generous. They’re old cart trails and old farming roads,” Ullrich said. “It’s a unique way to experience it, to be able to ride through fields and woods and pop out into these towns.”

Riders cycle for four to six hours per day. This Italian journey costs participants about $3,000, not including airfare, which covers everything needed once the tour begins.

While it’s a nice package to be able to offer, Ullrich said it’s also great for the staff who get to go as guides.

“Anybody who enjoys cycling finds for the most part that when you go to new environments you have better endurance and more enthusiasm, just because around every corner it’s a new vista.”

On the trip, cyclists follow parts of the 2,000 year old Roman road, Via Francigena, in addition to a segment of an even older Etruscan road, to get them from Rome to Florence.

“You hit the Etruscan road on the second day and actually ride that for two or three hours,” said Fawcett. “It is basically like a canyon that is

carved out by the Etruscans, and you can ride it now with your mountain bike.”

Unlike Vancouver Island, Fawcett describes the kind of cycling done on the expeditions as being more like European style off-road touring.

For those thinking this might be a fun adventure, Fawcett has a few tips.

“These expeditions are designed for people who have a high level of fitness,” said Fawcett. “They don’t necessarily have to have a high level of mountain bike skill, but a bit is good.”

But just because you’re a mountain biker doesn’t mean his expeditions are right for you, Fawcett added.

“Often mountain bikers can be more into free riding and don’t have the fitness for this type of thing,” he said.

Though Fawcett Expeditions is still a young company, Fawcett is merging with his Italian partner to form an international expedition company under the name Mongolia Bike Challenge Cycling, named after a mountain bike race Fawcett helps manage in Mongolia.

Stop crapping on Esquimalt

The uproar in Esquimalt the past week may well have been heard across the Juan de Fuca Strait, where pro-sewage treatment advocates are watching every move we make on the project.

News that the Capital Regional District is considering a site in the Esquimalt industrial park for a planned biosolids processing facility, to go with the main treatment plant on the Esquimalt waterfront, left residents and nearby property owners feeling they had been crapped on yet again.

CRD core area liquid waste management committee chair Denise Blackwell’s comments that a biosolids plant on Viewfield Road would save between $6 million and $7 million annually in operating costs over a plant built at Hartland were telling. Regardless if the $17-million land purchase was speculative, the decision shows which way the committee is leaning.

That a consultation process is being planned to help the CRD choose between the two sites is small consolation to the property owners in the Viewfield neighbourhood, which touches on Esquimalt and Victoria.

Given its siting, the McLoughlin Point treatment plant is likely to have less of a deleterious effect on property values than a biosolids plant on Viewfield, even if the smell and noise are well contained.

Both residential and industrial values are bound to drop as a result of last week’s news, in the short term at least. Whether the CRD ultimately chooses to locate the biosolids plant there or not, the damage may already be done.

Could all this have been avoided? Hard to say. Municipal land dealings are always done behind closed doors as a matter of course.

And the biosolids plant, which may well have a smaller environmental footprint than the existing trucking warehouse on Viewfield, has to be built somewhere.

The CRD, duty-bound to spend taxpayers’ money wisely, no doubt felt compelled to snap up a property it believed could be an ideal site, especially when it could save millions.

But it better be ready for further outcry, and potential legal action as it hits the fan in Esquimalt for a second time.

Memorializing the cat that came back Simba slept on the pillow beside me. If I felt his wet nose touching my face or a claw gently scratching my ear, I lowered him to the floor.

Otherwise the feline would scramble down for food and water by himself, and jump back again.

Some nights I helped him up when he scratched the mattress for a clawhold.

Why didn’t I put in carpeted steps? How could I have been so dumb? I often ask myself that question nowadays.

Simba was an old orange-coloured Persian.

Last week he was level in cat-years with a human older than 100.

It was in 2000 that he first crept around a corner of our house, with mangy-looking patches pruned out of the long fur on his back, where chunks of matted coat had been shorn off. My late wife Peggy set out a pet basket.

He ate some cat food, and slept.

Next morning I travelled out of town. When I returned, Peggy had found Simba’s owners, along the

His owners were preparing to move; they didn’t have much time to spend with Simba. He needed care, because he had gone through a nasty experience.

The body of his close friend cat, a white Persian, had been found floating in the lake with its head bitten or cut off. My theory was that the white cat stalked a baby otter and the mother counterattacked.

Peggy took Simba back to his home seven times.

He returned eight times.

Finally his owners let him stay – a kind gesture, because he was a pedi-

greed cat valued at $600.

Our black cat accepted the red cat as a companion. Both of them were peaceful neutered males. After Simba’s arrival Peggy and I often traded messages: “Where’s Black?”

“Under the old pear tree.”

“Where’s Red?” “Down on the waterfront.”

“I’ll go get him.”

This talk was twoperson code, signalling human-pet lives tangled together. We were scared of otter attack and Goldstream Avenue. One of our dogs and two cats had been killed there by speeding cars. Luckily Red and Black were frightened too.

Peggy died of lung cancer, Aug. 7, 2007, a dark anniversary. Nuclear bombs hit Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan on August 6 and 9, 1945. Tens of thousands of cats and dogs, and equal numbers of humans, died instantly.

Our black cat died of bladder cancer in 2012 and left Simba and me

occupying the front bedroom.

Simba was overdue to visit Glenview Animal Hospital for checkup, the shaving of matted furclots, and perhaps a new diet to restore some of his strength.

But I waited too long.

One morning I woke up to find my poor friend dangling beside the bed with his front claws clamped into a wedge of sheet.

If I had awakened 15 minutes earlier, I could have pulled Simba up on the mattress, just four inches above his head. As it was, however, he wore himself out attempting to climb. His old heart failed.

His body was still warm.

I pressed gently but rapidly on his thin belly in an attempt at artificial respiration. It didn’t work.

Sometimes I can feel Simba’s whiskers brushing my nose, and his small rough tongue on my face.

So I think. Then I wake up, and I am the only creature in the bed.

Our study with Royal Roads University last year showed that the E&N can and should be funded right away, even while longer term consideration is given to any LRT (light rapid transit). It also found the LRT as proposed

by BC Transit, is significantly overpriced, even “gold plated” at $1-billion plus in estimated costs.

Surely it was not just designed to serve the downtown corridor to Uptown mall.

We also believe other options such as a passenger ferry, and

Trans Canada Highway improvements and reconfiguration (including HOV lanes and Malahat improvements) need to be considered. We will be asking local provincial incumbents and candidates to state their positions and articulate their party platforms on these key issues facing B.C.’s fastest growing communities.

Along with transportation issues, incumbents and candidates should be considering their ongoing support to make sure our two new high schools actually get built and on time, and whether they support the idea of a major arts centre/ cultural institution somewhere in the West Shore.

Finally there has been lately a lot of noise about amalgamation and various models to achieve such dreams. Amalgamation in any form is not a sliver bullet and

does not save costs necessarily, but it does presumably, bring much better collaboration and coordination than the CRD and our 13 individual municipalities have been able to pull off so far.

Provincial leaders and would be leaders must attend to the West Shore’s transportation needs with dispatch while making plans that are practical, sustainable and cost effective. To do so would be a huge service to our communities’ best interests.

The WestShore Chamber hosts two election forums. The first is on Tuesday, April 23 at Church of the Advent in Colwood and the second is Thursday, April 25 at Isabel Reader Theatre at Spencer middle school in Langford – watch for the details.

Act doesn’t force couples into marriage Headlines have mistakenly suggested that common-law couples are now “married” under B.C.’s new Family Law Act. This is not true.

I want to make it very clear: the new family law is not about forcing unmarried couples into getting married. When it comes to the law’s property division rules, it’s about providing fair rules for couples who split up – and ensuring that those rules are crystal clear at the onset of a relationship.

The new family law’s model is fair: you keep what’s yours, but you share what you accrued together as a couple. This means that property brought into a relationship, and certain property you might receive during your relationship, such as inheritances or gifts, are generally not divided upon

separation, regardless of whether you are married or not. Only property and debt that a couple accrues together during their relationship is dividable. This is similar to many other Canadian jurisdictions.

Under the outdated Family Relations Act, property division provisions only applied to married couples. A common-law couple could live together 20-plus years, and when they broke up the property would stay with whoever's name it was in. It would not be considered joint property and divided in half, as would be the case for married couples.

This resulted in complex legal cases and often great unfairness, usually to women, as the property was more often in the man’s name.

Today common-law couples have the freedom to opt-out of the property division

rules by written agreement. The agreement will allow them to divide their property as they see fit, with limited ability for the court to overturn the agreement.

It is important to note that under existing law, common-law couples are already subject to many of the same laws as married couples, such as those around income tax and wills and estates. Also, under the old Family Relations Act, common-law couples could seek spousal support.

The new Family Law Act replaces outdated legislation passed in the 1970s and addresses the needs of modern B.C. families and shifts in societal norms.

I must say that I was not impressed to see that the “EV only” signage is completely ignored. Not only were all the parking spots taken, but one of the spots in front of the charging station was occupied by a municipality of Oak Bay pickup truck.

I went inside to inquire, and was met with an almost complete lack of knowledge about the charging stations amongst the three people there.

I was given the business card of someone to contact by email.

The most surprising thing, however, is that use of the station appears to require an access card. That was not mentioned in the article. I’m

wondering how the mayor expects to gather usage information that “will allow us to determine the need for more stations throughout the community,” when no mention is even made of the need to have an access card, or how one would go about getting such a card.

These problems remind me of the recent announcement of charging stations at the Juan de Fuca rec centre. I was there for the announcement, but had to leave before all the speeches were over. Imagine my surprise a week later when I went to try it out and found that the units were unavailable. You can imagine why I, as an EV owner, might see these things as political announcements and nothing more. The actual follow through is weak, to say the least.

When Sarah Hilton, 17, was pondering the idea of getting a tattoo, she drew her back with a graphite pencil.

At the nape of her neck she wrote IX VII MCMXLVI, her papa’s birthday – Sept. 7, 1946.

She has always had a strong connection with her grandfather, even though he died before she was born.

“He named me Sarah after the dinosaur on The Land Before Time,” said the Belmont secondary student, adding he talked to her through her mother’s pregnant belly.

While the tattoo is still just an idea, Hilton likes how it looks on paper and may eventually add it to her body. The drawing will soon be on display at the Xchanges Student Invitational show.

Xchanges Gallery is hosting the show and had six of its adult artists go to six Greater Victoria high schools to select Grade 12 students to participate.

Painter Richard Motchman, president of the gallery, was the artist who went to Belmont to select three students.

“We chose Grade 12 students because they are leaving school soon and we wanted them to connect with the adult art world,” he said. “The student’s art was really good and it was difficult to narrow it down and only pick three.”

Motchman invited Hilton and two of her classmates to the show.

Amber Mcleod-Champagne, 17, entered her piece titled Simplicity. The mixed media piece involves newspapers, a photo of her cat and acrylic paint.

Amber McLeod-Champagne is one of several secondary students whose work will be displayed in the Xchanges Student Invitational show from April 5 to 28. to get our work out there before we graduate,” McLeod-Champagne said. “It’s also very inspirational to see other people’s art.”

Laura Rechwan,17, will also be a part of the show with her acrylic painting titled, It’s later than you think.

“My love for the natural world is what inspires me,” she said.

Rechwan is excited to be a part of the show and to volunteer a shift in the gallery talking about her art to the public.

There will be 20 students whose work will be on display at the show. The art spans paintings, ceramics, video, printmaking and other mediums.

The show opens April 5 at 7 p.m. and will continue until April 28.

The nature of peace Deryk Houston’s work has been exhibited in one-man exhibitions in the former Soviet Union, Scotland, Iraq, and the United States.

His work is included in many private and public collections including the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa and was featured in the National Film Board of Canada documentary, From Baghdad to Peace Country.

He has completed large scale

ground art projects in Iraq, Canada, and Scotland in support of children’s rights. Much of his work is about the earth and creating conditions for seeds to grow, a metaphor for the search for peace.

Parents are often surprised when I tell them that children should have their eyes examined around their third birthday. At this age however, many problems can be detected and timely treatment started. If an infant or HWY ANADA toddler has an obvious problem, the parents should not TRANS-C hesitate to have the child’s eyes examined even earlier.

Children with vision problems may not complain.

Blurred or double vision can seem normal if one has never known anything else. Sometimes a child may only be using one eye with the other not functioning properly; even though it appears to be normal. An eye may be “lazy” (amblyopic) even if it doesn’t seem to turn in or out. Treatment for amblyopia is far more effective if undertaken well before the child’s seventh birthTO NANAIMO / day.

NORTH ISLAND Parents can watch out for signs of vision problems even in very young children: Rubbing the eyes, holding objects too close, tilting the head or an unusual lack of coordination are some of the warning symptoms.

Children do not need to know the alphabet to be examined. Optometrists can use pictures, symbols and toys to help examine toddlers. The emphasis is usually on “fast and fun” in these cases. After the initial visit, LANGFORD annual checks are recommended as children’s eyes LAKE change as they grow.

Here in British Columbia, a program for preschool children called “Vision First Check” has just started.

World renowned cellist Michael Kevin Jones is coming to Metchosin on Friday, April 5 to play a selection of classical works at St. Mary of the Incarnation Church.

Born in Britain, Jones began playing the cello at 13 years old. He studied at the Royal College of Music and in Germany and has performed for the Royal Family. He has toured China, Europe, Australia and the Middle East.

In Metchosin he will be primarily playing selections from Bach’s Cello Suites, which Jones recorded in their entirety in 2002 for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Club in Iceland calls on Midnights Megan Cole News staff

After wowing crowds halfway around the world in 2010, Victoria band The Midnights will be back on stage in Ballerup, Denmark in August.

The performance continues a long history between the Vic High band, musical director Eric Emde, The Midnights and the Ballerup School Orchestra.

After the Vic High rhythm and blues band played the Ballerup Music Festival in 2007, organizers went on the school website and discovered The Midnights.

“They asked if The Midnights would attend in 2010,” Emde said.

“We went and I was stunned that they voted us the most popular band at the festival.”

This time, the 12-piece rhythm and

blues will also play a club in Iceland.

While the festival is several months away, The Midnights are busy fundraising and preparing for their trip.

“It’s going to cost us about $30,000,” Emde said. “We’ve all decided to take the money and throw it into the pot instead of paying ourselves. Really, we’re playing for the joy of it.”

The Midnights include professional musicians from the city and students from the Victoria High school rhythm and blues band.

“It’s a very interesting mix because there are the older musicians and the younger ones, so it’s really quite energetic on stage,” Emde said.

A fundraiser concert happens tomorrow (March 28) from 8 to 11 p.m. at the Victoria Events Centre.

After a trial run last summer, the West Shore will see blood donor clinics every eight weeks starting in April.

Ciara Stewart, volunteer resources co-ordinator with Canadian Blood Services hopes to build a local volunteer team to help run two-day blood donor clinics.

“I’m looking for an in-clinic team for the West Shore,” Stewart said. “They

run the refreshment area during the clinic.”

The in-clinic team serves juice and cookies and looks out for adverse reactions in donors post-donation.

“We definitely couldn’t run our clinics without them,” Stewart said.

Training involves orientation and a three- to four-hour hands-on session.

Stewart needs a minimum dozen people and a team leader plus another crew of in-community volunteers to spread the word and man information

A Garry oak tree grown in Saanich is genetically different than a Garry oak from Chilliwack – let alone the tree species' American kin from Washington State.

That's why a Victoriabased environmental group, the Garry Oak Meadow Preservation Society (GOMPS), is embarking on a project to grow healthy Garry oaks from local acorns.

“From a genetic point of view, the Garry oaks in our area are producing acorns that will have the best chances of survival here because they will inherit the traits that their parent trees are developing,” said Michael Croteau, a member of GOMPS. Last week Victoria council approved a plan to sublease an unused nursery in Saanich to GOMPS, where the organization will sow and grow Garry oak seedlings. GOMPS declined to say where the nursery is located.

“We need to produce a large and healthy enough tree that can be planted without fear of damage in our urban forests – deer, rabbits, people. We need to produce the biggest, healthiest tree that's

economically viable,” Croteau said.

Once the tree is big enough to moved from the nursery, they'll be sold to municipalities, regional groups, public bodies and the general public.

“This is something that's very much needed because people in our community are seeing the trees falling, and they're not being replaced fast enough for an oak tree to fill the space,” Croteau said.

Growing genetically Victoria Garry oaks in optimum conditions in the nursery will give them the best chance of survival once they're planted in an urban forest.

GOMPS aims to produce roughly 1,000 trees to sell each year.

But that will take some time. Croteau anticipates the first lot of trees won't be available for five to seven years.

The nursery still needs to be prepared for the operation, so sowing likely won't happen for another month or two.

Lead ice maker Hans Wuthrich is back. Wuthrich handled the ice at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre for the Men’s World Curling Championships 2005 and is currently setting it for the 2013 Ford World Men’s World Curling Championships, March 30 to April 7.

It’s all cool when Hans Wuthrich is in town.

The renowned ice maker, with assistant Dave Merklinger, has prepared and maintained the ice for most of the world’s top curling events for over 15 years.

They prepared the curling ice for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, and the 2005 World Men’s Curling Championship in Victoria, among others.

Wuthrich, based out of Gimli, Man., arrived to Victoria on Friday, and started the process of turning the ice of Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre from a hockey rink into four sheets of world class ice for the Ford Men’s World Curling Championship, March 30 to April 7.

The ice is key for the tournament, and will be debated about

no matter what, Wuthrich said.

But Wuthrich also manages the curling rocks, which debuted to much criticism at the Brier in Edmonton earlier this month.

“Actually we didn’t get (access to) the rink until Saturday at midnight so we spent time Saturday and (refit) all the curling stones. They were brand new (for the Brier) but there was some squabbles about them so we completed that first,” Wuthrich said.

He politely pointed out the rocks couldn’t have been that imperfect, as the Brier finished with its highest shooting percentage ever.

The process for the ice in Memorial Centre is multi-staged.

To start, the zamboni scraped it down. Wuthrich and company put levelers in before an additional “three-quarters-of-an-inch of ice,” will be laid onto the existing “three-quarters-of-an-inch of hockey ice” in a three stages of floods, Wuthrich said. Then come the final tweaks and peb-

bling later this week.

Tickets for the event are selling slow but event organizers expect a heavy portion of walkup fans.

“That’s good news,” said event co-chair Keith Dagg. “People can show up and get tickets at the door,” which tends to be the habit of Victorians, he added.

Oak Bay’s teenaged karate brothers Jean and Geoffrey Newell are national champions.

Jean, 14, and Geoffrey, 17, partnered with Emlyn Folkes to win gold in the Team Kata event for boys aged 14 to 17 years old at Karate Canada’s national championships in Toronto, March 15 to 17.

Geoffrey took home three awards, including being named the top junior male karate athlete of the year by Karate Canada. Geoffrey also won silver in Kumite (sparring) in the sub-55 kilograms junior men’s category for 16- and 17-year-olds.

Jean and Geoffrey defeated Ontario team in Team Kata with a nearly a perfect score.

The win qualifies them as members of Team Canada with a chance to represent Canada at the Pan American Games in Columbia this summer.

UVictim’s mens ultimate frisbee team won the inaugural Douglas Bowl 16-14 over the UBC Thunderbirds in extra pulls despite trailing most of the game at UVic on Saturday.

UVictim’s women’s team didn’t fare as well, falling 15-5 to the Thunderbirds.

MVP honours went to UVictim’s Kevin Underhill and Thunderbirds’ Kevin Greer for the men’s game and UVictim’s Kate Scarth and Thunderbirds’ Rena Kawabata for the women’s game.

CrossFit owner adds Langford gym to stable Deanna Whiteley opened her first CrossFit gym in 2009 in Victoria. That popular downtown workout haven at 708 Pembroke St. now boasts more than 200 members.

When Whiteley heard Dave Warbeck was looking to sell his CrossFit gym in Langford, she jumped at the Don Descoteau chance to take on Biz Beat a second location.

The Colwood resident was introduced to CrossFit by Warbeck, whom she worked and trained with in 2005. Warbeck is happy to see everything come full circle with his former student taking the reins.

Whiteley is also excited to have a gym closer to home. Running two gyms has been a challenge, but her mother and business partner, Sandy Raven, has helped ease the stress.

The former CrossFit Vancouver Island gym at 1057 Langford Pkwy. has been renamed CrossFit Zone West Shore. With about 50 members registered, Whiteley said she is hoping to grow the gym.
