To the Mayor of the City of Armstrong of the Future: ayor, as I write this letter 100 years have passed since Armstrong was incorporated as a city. Mayor James M. Wright was elected Mayor and our history commenced. Our city had approximately 1,200 people and they were starting to plan for their future. The priorities for the original Council included: improve the water supply and distribution; construct and Mayor improve local roads; extend and improve Chirs Pieper hydro lines; set up the required medical service (3 doctors were currently in Armstrong); build a new school; and, provide a vibrant agricultural and forestry business district. These priorities continue to be the priorities of our city today. One hundred years ago we formed our little city from a district in the middle of the Spallumcheen municipality. What does local governance look like in 2113?

Armstrong, in 2013, has a population of 4,850 people, and we enjoy a lot of the services our pioneer fathers started. We still get our water from Fortune Creek, the original layout of roads has been enhanced and improved, and we have a great jointly funded volunteer fire department with Spallumcheen. We have four schools and four doctors; however, all of our hospital needs are in Vernon. While agriculture and forestry continue to be the drivers of our economy, they have changed from small operations to large commercial ventures and hobby farms. The rail line and trains (a most valuable part of life in our early days), are facing partial closure and we currently have one train per day

The meeting minutes from the city’s original council meeting were prepared with a typewriter. Today, I write this letter using a computer and Microsoft Word. The minimum wage is $10.50 per hour, compared to the monthly salaries of $25.00 in 1913. A house today costs an average $350,000 and it is almost impossible for a young person to purchase one due to the high price tag. Natural gas came to Armstrong in 1957, converting all of our old wood, coal, and oil systems. Today, natural gas is the main heating source for our city. While our pioneers were faced with getting stuck in the mud on the road to Vernon, today we have a great four-lane highway, completed in 2012. We can be to Vernon in 15 minutes.

So, Mayor of 2113, if you could telepathically contact me, I would like to know a few things about our city. Is the IPE still going in its 214th year? Have our young people been able to stay around and find local employment? Have the generations been able to preserve and increase our values of pride, vision and the spirit of Armstrong? What have our primary industries of agriculture and forestry transposed into? What kind of an environment do we live in and has global warming changed our lives?

Now, Mayor of 2113, I could go on about how proud I am of our little city and about our hopes and dreams for the future.

We have to leave that to our future generations of our children, grandchildren, and the new families moving into this great community. I hope our future generations have succeeded and Armstrong is still the jewel it is today.

Woman shares 100th birthday with city Roger Knox Morning Star Staff

R

uth Bosomworth think it’s neat that she’ll be celebrating her 100th birthday this summer in the same year her adopted hometown turns 100.

And she couldn’t think of a better place to be for her milestone birthday.

Bosomworth, who reaches the century mark on Aug. 13, came to Armstrong with her husband, Neil, in 1943, and has never left.

“I’m happy to have stayed here,” said Bosomworth. “It isn’t everyday you end up in a town full of such friendly people. All the necessities I’ve needed are here.”

Originally from Edmonton, Bosomworth met her future husband when both were students at the University of Alberta during the Second World War; Ruth was studying arts and Neil was in agriculture.

It was the lure of a job with the B.C. Pea Growers Ltd. in Armstrong that brought the Bosomworths to the North Okanagan from Edmonton where they were doing post-graduate work.

“A friend of Neil’s was working for the B.C. Pea Growers, a Mormon friend, and he was going back to Utah,” recalled

Bosomworth. “He called Neil and said it was a good job and wanted to know if Neil would like the job.”

Upon arrival, the Bosomworths rented a house on Pleasant Valley Road near where the Blue Mountain Nursery is today. Their first son, John, was born in Armstrong in 1943 under the care of Dr. Haugen.

With Neil away on business, Ruth looked at a house on Rosedale Avenue “on the top of the hill.”

“The people who owned it were so anxious to get the money, we bought the house right away,” said Ruth, who would give birth to twins, David and Dianne, in 1945.

Dianne was born with cerebral palsy and passed away shortly before her fifth birthday.

The house on the hill was so recognizable and well-known that friends of Ruth around the country would write her a letter, addressing it to “Ruth Bosomworth, the House on the Hill, Armstrong, B.C.,” and the postman would deliver each letter every single time.

Neil, meanwhile, had been doing some work

“I called a friend in Vernon and said I was coming to see her so I rode my bike into Vernon,” said Bosomworth, who parked her bike for good when she turned 80. “All of the roads were dirt roads then. On the way back, I was riding beside a train and the engineer said, ‘Why don’t you put the bike in the box car and hop on, and I’ll drop you in Armstrong?’ So I did.

“The train doesn’t go through here anymore, that’s

When she first arrived, the only stores she can remember sold hardware and groceries, and the Armstrong Co-Operative was in full swing.

Armstrong, said Bosomworth, was the perfect place to raise a family.

“I never once thought of going back to Alberta,” said Bosomworth. “Armstrong has grown, but it hasn’t grown too big. I like that.”

Lacrosseville Legacy Continues Roger Knox Morning Star Staff

T

he Red Apple Boys. The Golden Eagles. The Shamrocks.

It doesn’t matter what the teams have been called in more than 100 years of history: lacrosse is to Armstrong what hockey is to Montreal.

Armstrong is Lacrosseville, with its roots dating back to 1903.

I.L. Cooper wrote in his 2002 book Lacrosse Is Armstrong’s Game that lacrosse in 1903 was “the premier sport of Canada and any town worth its salt had a team. One can imagine how local pride was affected,” a reference to the fact Armstrong did not have a team, while clubs had formed in Kamloops, Vernon and Revelstoke.

An ad was placed in the Armstrong Advertiser looking for people interested in the formation of a lacrosse club.

As Cooper wrote, in 1904 and 1905, there was lots of talk around the town, but no action on the formation of a team.

That changed on March 30, 1906, when the Armstrong Lacrosse Club was formed.

Less than a month later, on April 16, 1906, the first game of lacrosse was played on an Armstrong field between the new squad and the neighbouring community that would become its biggest and most bitter rival over the next 100 years, Vernon.

Now, 107 years later, lacrosse in Armstrong is still going at the minor, junior and senior levels.

Armstrong is the smallest city in the four-team Thompson Okanagan Junior Lacrosse League, and in the three-team Thompson Okanagan Senior Lacrosse League.

The smallest city, at least at the senior level, has been the one constant. At one point or another, throughout the years, Kamloops and Kelowna clubs have folded. This year, Vernon does not have a team due to a shortage of players.

“We came close one year, I think it was 2008 or 2009, to not having a senior team but

it was left to a vote of the players and they voted to play on,” said Jeff Hanley, 45, then a player with the senior Shamrocks, and now president of both the senior and junior Armstrong Shamrocks clubs.

“One of the reasons why Armstrong has been able to sustain teams is team management and cooperation. I can say easArmstrong Lacrosse Team ~ 1912 ily that Armstrong is head and shoulders above other teams in terms of cooperation between minor, junior and senior clubs.”

Another reason is the long history of the sport in Armstrong.

“Years ago, lacrosse was a big deal in this town,” said Hanley. “There was not, I suppose, as much going on in people’s lives, so local lacrosse was something to go out and support. Plus the players were local guys, everyone knew everyone. You might see them on the street during the day, then watch them play lacrosse that night. It helped build the community support.”

The support does not extend to just Armstrong. Fans will travel to neighbouring communities to watch the beloved Shamrocks play.

It has also helped the sport that the ancient Hassen Arena has been turned into a dry floor surface only, meaning the Shamrocks can practice year-round (and other teams have also booked Hassen for practices). Minor, junior and senior matches are now played at the Nor-Val Sports Centre.
